Fire marshal: Few but bigger incidents in 2017 NEWS

T
his year’s record on the incidence of �ire incidents in Davao City dipped to only 276 cases from January to November compared to last year’s data where in 506 cases were recorded. But the total damages were much higher this year, according to district �ire marshal C/Insp. Honee Fritz Alagano. He said that for January to November 2016 the damages incurred P91,158,700 while this year’s �igures
showed total damage at P676,729,729, 295. “The damages caused by �ire incidents this year is high because we had industrial �ires like the recent �ire incident in Davao Bay Coconut Oil,” she told the AFP-PNP Corps Southern Mindanao press conference on Wednesday. The two industrial �ires involved the Lapanday Foods Corporation building �ire incident in Barangay Mandug, Davao City last April with total dam-
age placed at P500 million and the Davao Bay Coconut Oil Mills that incurred P33,600,000. Based on statistics, residential �ires are commonly caused by faulty electrical wiring and unattended cooking stove. BFP conducts caravans and barangay ugnayan to educate the community on how to prevent �ire. “This is being conducted because the common �ire incidents happen in the
residential area,” said Alagano. Meanwhile, BFP also continues to checks the �ire exits and �ire�ighting equipment of occupancy establishments in order to ensure the safety of the people. “BFP continues the �ire safety inspections in different types of occupancies specially those places that conducts assemblies which will be attended by many people,” said Alagano.
