City’s drainage system needs a great deal of intervention: ASU

Davao City’s drainage system needs a lot of interventions.

That is the straightforward statement of the city government’s Ancillary Services Unit (ASU).

Some areas in Davao City have experienced flooding due to the recent heavy rains such as Sasa, Damosa in Lanang, Buhangin, and MacArthur Highway.

According to ASU head Paul Bermejo, during their cleaning, they found out that the drainage systems in the flooded areas were already silted.

“Gipang-open namo ug

ginakuhaan ug mga hugaw sa ilalom. Silted na daan ang atong mga kanal. Daghan nami nakuha na basura,” Bermejo said over Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR) on Friday. Bermejo said a long-term plan to address flooding in the city was discussed during the coordination meeting organized by the City Disaster Risk Reduction

The executive order, issued on June 8, 2023, aims to strengthen the promotion, growth, and development of programs and services for the city’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Recognizing the crucial role of MSMEs in driving economic growth and achieving countryside industrialization, the State has declared its commitment to supporting and encouraging the development of these enterprises across all productive sectors. The reconstitution of the Davao City MSMED Council is a significant step towards fulfilling this commitment.

Under the new executive order, the council will be chaired by the city mayor or a duly authorized representative, with the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) president serving as the vice-chairperson. The council’s members include representatives from various local and national government agencies, business organizations, and associations in the city.

The City MSMED Council’s key functions include Creating an enabling environment for business growth.

Formulating a Local Entrepreneurship Development Plan

Developing policies and guidelines for local enterprises. Providing beneficial services to entrepreneurs and local enterprises.

The City MSMED Council will hold quarterly meetings to discuss strategies, review progress, and address emerging challenges. Serving as the permanent secretariat, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Davao City Field Office coordinates meetings and ensures the effective delivery of council activities and programs.

Funding for the council’s operational expenses will be sourced from the Office of the City Mayor’s available funds and the council’s resources generated through trade fairs and other activities. The executive order also allows the council to accept donations from organizations, provided the funds are used to implement MSME promotion and development programs and projects.

By reconstituting the MSMED Council and reinforcing its mandate, the mayor aims to empower MSMEs, drive economic growth, and create more opportunities for the city’s residents.

Davao City to boost greening initiatives amid int’l citation

The Davao City Planning Coordinator revealed on Thursday that the city’s green city initiative, which was achieved with the help of various offices of the city government, got the bronze award during the 21st International Awards for Livable Communities by LivCom.

The awarding was held on June 2 in Valletta, Malta.

Davao was picked from among 232 cities from all over the world and became among the 22 that were chosen as awardees.

The city received the bronze award under Category 8 or those with more than 400,000 population, along with Eskisehir Turkey and Narayanganj, Bangladesh. For that category, the 1st gold was given to Abu Dhabi UAE, the 2ND gold to Xinyang, P.R. China, and the 3rd gold to Cankaya District, Ankara Turkey. Two silver awards were also given to Katowice Poland, and Avcilar, Turkey.

The award was given through a hybrid awarding setup, where City Environment and Natural Resources Office Head Engr. Marivic Reyes was also given the opportunity to present the city’s

greening efforts.

City Planning and Development Coordinator Engr. Ivan C. Cortez, during the I-Speak Media Forum held Thursday, June 8, 2023, said that such an award serves as an evaluation of the efforts of the city in terms of greening and sustainability.

“They took notice of our efforts in terms of parks development, peace and security, and also our efforts in protecting our remaining forest nasa ordinances natin and regulations,” he said.

Cortez said that the city is lucky to have a green advocate leadership through the city mayor, who pushes and takes further these initiatives.

“We have a standing order from the mayor to improve further the greening efforts of the city, we are introducing greening efforts in our sidewalks and our center islands. We want to lessen the urban heat effect, especially in our downtown areas kasi masyadong mainit na siya (because it is very hot) during noon time,” Cortez said.

Lawyer Arcelito Albao, director of the National Bureau of Investigation-Davao Region (NBIDavao), denied abducting suspects.

Albao reiterated that abducting suspects is not a work of NBIDavao.

The NBI-Davao issued the statement amidst allegations that the agency investigated and kidnapped Dennis Roy P. Panzan, one of the suspects linked in the rape-slay of 28-year-old architect Vlance Marie L. Bragas last month.

Panzan, 18-year-old and a

resident of Purok 7 in Barangay Lacson, Davao City, was reported missing on May 27, 2023. Panzan claimed that he was abducted by a group of men but was able to escape while traveling aboard an unidentified vehicle. He sought refuge at the barangay hall of Matina Pangi and later rescued by Talomo police, but collapsed while being debriefed and died at the Davao Adventist Hospital

in Bangkal, Davao City on May 29, 2023

Albao said NBI-Davao always follows the rule of law and due process.

“It’s not the style of NBI to abduct any persons of interest or suspects of any case,” Albao told Edge Davao.

Albao stressed that Panzan was not among the persons of interest of NBI-Davao in the parallel investigation of the Bragas rapeslay case.

Albao added that NBI-Davao only investigated the case of re-

So much has been written about deforestation, flooding, erosion, drought, biodiversity loss, endangered species, food insecurity, and watersheds. All have one thing in common: forests.

But despite this fact, we continue to cut down those trees. Some of these are bulldozed to give way to housing programs. Others are chain-sawed for road widening. There are those which are burned to give way to growing crops. In rural areas, they are cut for firewood and charcoal.

When this “pearl of the Orient seas” was rediscovered by Ferdinand Magellan on March 16, 1521, the country was almost totally covered with forest resources distributed throughout the archipelago. These resources provided income, employment, food, medicine, building materials and water as well as a healthy environment.

Statistics show that 54 years after Magellan came to the country, 92% (27.5 million hectares) of the country’s total land area of 30 million hectares was covered with forests. This went down to 70% (20.9 million hectares) in 1863, then to 64% (18.9 million hectares) in 1920, and 36.3% (10.9 million hectares) in 1970.

“The Philippines islets were

once almost totally covered by tropical forest, leading us proudly to proclaim to the whole world that while our country may not have much financial resources, we are a rich nation because of our abundant natural resources,” stressed Imee Marcos who was then Ilocos Norte when she said those words.

Quoting a report released by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), Marcos said, “Now, we’re down to 3.0% forest cover.”

Where have all our forests gone?

Logging – legal or otherwise – are mowing down the country’s remaining forests. The Rev. Peter Walpole, a Jesuit priest who heads an environmental group, said the Philippines “trusted” logging companies to cut down trees and manage the forests. “But they did a very bad job,” he decried.

In 1989, the government imposed a lumber export ban in an effort to save the country’s forests from uncontrollable illegal logging. The following year, the ban was quietly lifted, but was reinstated after loud criticism.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the lead agency responsible for the country’s natural resources and ecosystems, is “vir-

tually powerless against logging” because the practice, although unnoticed, is still going on.

Other culprits of deforestation include swidden agriculture (locally known as kaingin farming), mining operations, geothermal explorations, dam constructions and operation, forest fires, and land development projects (such as construction of subdivision, industrial estates, and commercial sites and road widening).

Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes have also devastated some forests. The country’s surging population has also contributed to the problem. At least a fourth of the total population lives in the upland areas, where most trees are located.

As a consequence of the continuous removal of cover, particularly those found in upland areas, our country now reels from different environmental problems. “Most of these were not seen in such intensity and magnitude before our time,” deplored Jethro P. Adang, the director of the Bansalan-based Mindanao Baptist Rural Life Center (MBRLC). “The signs cry out for immediate, nationwide attention.”

Soil erosion is one of the most translucent problems. “(It) is now an extremely serious problem in the country,” Adang said. “It does

GLIMPSES & GAZES

When the Philippine Historical Association (PHA) conducted its 2023 Annual Conference at the historic Metropolitan Theater in Manila on Aug. 31-Sept. 2, I have an ardent wish that the delegates will exert their best efforts to settle and put to rest the decades-old debates over certain aspects of the Filipinos’ campaign for independence from Spanish occupation in the 1890s.

This early, I am certain that numerous books would be written later about the various topics and subjects that would be discussed thoroughly during the three-day conference. And hopefully, such books would put an end to the controversies over the 1896-1898 Revolution that “need to be restudied, to be reinterpreted, or even resolved.”

According to its website, the PHA was founded on Sept. 18, 1955 by a group of prominent historians, among them, Teodoro Agoncillo, Encarnacion Alzona, Celedonio Ancheta, Ga-

not only result in increasing the impoverishment of the Filipino farmers but also destroys other things down under.”

Siltation, caused by erosion, shortens the productive life spans of dams and reservoirs. The Magat reservoir, for instance, has been cut from its probable life span of 100 years to 25 years. The Ambuklao Dam reservoir had its life halved from 60 years to 32 years as a result of siltation.

Another consequence: water shortage. The forested cover of watershed areas is vital for holding rain water that supplies surface bodies of water like springs, rivers, lakes and reservoirs and is stored in underground aquifers or groundwater.

Dr. Rafael D. Guerrero III, an academician with the National Academy of Science and Technology, said only 10% of the rainfall infiltrates into the ground. “With the low water absorption of denuded areas, there is an increase in the runoff in the uplands that causes flooding in the lowlands during heavy rains,” he said.

Deforestation also threatens the country’s wildlife resources. Take the case of the Philippine eagle. The natural habitat of the bird icon is mainly dipterocarp lowland forest where it is known

to nest almost exclusively ranging from 100 to 1,000 meters above sea level.

“Deforestation is terrible,” deplores Dennis Salvador, the executive director of Philippine Eagle Foundation. “The Philippine eagle has become a critically endangered species because the loss of the forest has made it lose its natural habitat.”

Deforestation has also altered our climatic condition. Periods of drought have become more common and extensive in the dry season while floods have prevailed in the rainy months.

Actually, deforestation is nothing new. If we believe in the saying that history repeats itself, then deforestation would be a classic example.

In his book, Critias, Plato commented on the deforestation of Attica: “What now remains compared with what then existed is like the skeleton of a sick man, all fat and soft earth having wasted away, and only the bare framework of the land being left… There are some mountains which have nothing but food for bees, but they had trees not very long ago, and the rafters from those felled trees to roof the largest buildings are still around.”

Will that happen to our beloved Philippines?

PHA SETS CONFERENCE ON FILIPINO PEOPLE’S STRUGGLES FOR NATIONHOOD

briel Fabella, Esteban de Ocampo, Nicolas Zafra, and Gregorio Zaide. Their aim was to establish a scholarly association of historians devoted to the propagation of historical knowledge and studies, principally pertaining to the Philippines.

Dr. Ma. Luisa T. Camagay, present PHA president, said the theme of the forthcoming conference is “SANGKAPILIPINUHAN: Retrospections on Independence and Nationhood.” She added that this year’s theme is in solidarity with the 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood on June 12.

“As the country commemorates its 125th anniversary of independence and nationhood, it is important to reflect on the historical and continuing struggles that have defined its journey towards self-determination and progress. This event also provides an opportunity for reflection on the country’s past and present conditions,” Camagay said.

The PHA itself, in its call for submission of discussion papers for the conference, said: “The Philippines, moving forward into the 21st century, continues to be plagued by unresolved controversies, contradictory directions, and contentious perspectives on Philippine nationhood.”

There are indeed a number of controversial aspects in the Philippine history that need to be corrected or rectified. These include where and when the outbreak of the 1896 Revolution against Spain actually happened.

In the book “The Cry of Balintawak: A Contrived Controversy” written by Dr. Soledad Borromeo-Buehler and published by the Ateneo De Manila University Press in 1998, there were several places listed as the sites of Katipunnan meetings and armed engagements from Aug. 21-27, 1896. Among these places were Kangkong, Pasong Tamo, Pugad Lawin, Balara, Balintawak, Banlat, Bahay Toro and Caloocan.

The book author, Buehler, is a professional historian and granddaughter of Gen. Guillermo Masangkay, one of the closest comrades of Gat Andres Bonifacio in the Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK). She had studied the so-called Masangkay papers thoroughly and became the basis of her book.

Incidentally, almost all of the places mentioned in her book as sites of the important meetings or early armed engagements of the Katipuneros were part of the former town of Novaliches. It must be pointed out that Quezon City was not yet in existence at that time, being founded only in October 1939 by then Philippine Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon.

In his book titled “Bones of Contention” published in 2014 by Anvil Publishing Inc,, noted historian-professor and former National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Chair-

man Ambeth R. Ocampo also cited some controversial episodes of the 1896 Revolution involving Balintawak and Pugad Lawin, among several other places.

For one thing, Ocampo noted the conflicting dates and places where Bonifacio and the other Katipuneros tore their “cedula” or residence certificate.

“Officially, and since 1962, it has been celebrated on August 23, 1896 in Pugad Lawin. Traditionally, before 1962, it was commemorated on August 26, 1896 in Balintawak. On this matter, tradition dies hard,” he said.

Meanwhile, as I was writing the concluding paragraphs of this column, I came across the latest column of veteran journalist Yen Makabenta under the title “Observer” and subtitled “It makes sense to revert the republic’s name to Filipinas” (from the present Philippines) in the June 8, 2023 issue of the Manila Times.

Unemployed Pinoys down to 2.26M in April 2023

The number of jobless Filipinos continued its downward trajectory in April amid increased economic activity during the period, data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) on Friday showed.

At a press conference, National Statistician and PSA chief Claire Dennis Mapa reported that the number of unemployed persons aged 15 years old and above declined to 2.26 million in April 2023 from 2.76 million in April 2022, translating to an unemployment rate of 4.5% out of 50.31 million individuals in the labor force.

Month-on-month, April’s number of unemployed person was lower than the 2.42 million jobless persons in March this year.

“Basically, if we look at it this is related to our economic activities,” Mapa said.

The number of employed persons, meanwhile, grew to 48.06 million from 45.63 million in April 2022. This translates to an employment

rate of 95.5%, higher than the 94.3% employment rate in April last year.

The services sector dominated the labor market with the largest share of employed persons of 61.1%, while the agriculture and the industry sectors accounted for 21.9% and 17%, respectively.

On the other hand, the top five sub-sectors with the highest increase on the number of employed persons from April 2022 to April 2023 were the following:

Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (914,000)

Accommodation and food service activities (379,000)

Administrative and support service activities (345,000)

Transportation and storage

(321,000)

Other service activities (242,000)

“To ensure the continuation of this trend, the government affirms its commitment to the unimpeded implementation of economic liberalization reforms and other essential legislation,” National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said in a statement.

“These efforts will be complemented by comprehensive collaborations among government entities and society as a whole to enhance the employability and productivity of our workforce,” he said.

Wage and salary workers accounted for the lion’s share of employed persons with 61.5% of the total.

Among wage and salary workers, employed persons in private establishments made up 47.6% of the total, followed by employed in government or government-controlled corporations with 9.2% share.

Oil prices to go up on Tuesday

After a round of rollbacks, motorists should brace for an increase in fuel pump prices in the coming week, local industry sources said Friday.

Department of Energy-Oil Industry Management Bureau Assistant Director Rodela Romero said that based on the past four-day trading, “[T]here will be an increase in the prices of petroleum products next week.”

Likewise, an oil industry source said that results of the oil trading from June 5 to 8 show that there may be a per liter increase of P1.00 to

P1.30 in the prices of diesel.

Meanwhile, gasoline prices may go up by P0.80 to P1.10 per liter.

Romero attributed the possible price hike on fuel products to OPEC+’s, particularly Saudi Arabia’s, announcing a reduction in the output target that will take effect from July 1 in a bid to prop up prices.

However, she said that persistent economic uncertainty still weighs on the outlook for demand, adding that Saudi’s cut announcement may soon fade “and the reality of the sluggish demand backdrop sets in.”

Oil companies usually announce price adjustments every Monday, to be implemented on the following day.

Effective Tuesday, June 6, oil companies implemented a per liter reductions on the prices of gasoline by P0.60, diesel by P0.30, and kerosene by P0.60.

The latest price movements brought the year-to-date adjustments to stand at a net decrease of P5.35 per liter for diesel and P7.35 per liter for kerosene. Gasoline has a year-to-date net increase of P5.50 per liter.

Revitalizing

salt industry to create 100,000 jobs

Aparty-list lawmaker on Friday said the priority measure revitalizing the country’s salt industry would help generate about 100,000 jobs in the agriculture sector.

Bicol Saro Partylist Representative Brian Raymund Yamsuan made the statement as he urged the Senate to fast-track the approval of its version of the proposed Philippine Salt Industry Development Act.

The Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) has included the bill among the priority measures of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Yamsuan said House Bill 8278, which hurdled final reading at the House of Representatives last week, aims to create a comprehensive plan for the salt industry to increase domestic production and boost investments in this sector, noting that th it would create 20,000 direct jobs and another 80,000 indirect jobs.

“However, we can only realize this goal if we have solid funding to help our salt farmers access the technology and equipment they need to boost production. This is why we are urging the Senate to swiftly act on its counterpart measure for the revival of our salt industry once Congress resumes its session next month,” Yamsuan said.

Yamsuan said aside from modernizing the industry, salt producers also need to expand their market linkages to be able to promote Philippine salt in both the domestic and foreign markets not only as a food flavoring, but also as a key element in various industries.

“Being an archipelagic country, we have a vast shoreline that can be utilized to produce salt. Sadly, instead of harnessing this natural advantage to develop the salt industry, our salt production has drastically declined and we have been importing 93 percent of our salt requirements for the past years,” Yamsuan said.

Speaker Martin Romualdez said the significance of the salt industry has not been lost on President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who is also the concurrent Department of Agriculture (DA) chief.

The DA said it sees the potential of the Philippines’ salt industry in boosting the local economy, promote sustainable livelihood, and as an income-generating opportunity for the Filipino people.

“He (Marcos) knows that we need to correct the sad irony that the country imports nearly 550,000 metric tons (MT) or 93 percent of its requirement for salt. This is indeed a sin,” Romualdez said.

The bill has been described by its authors as a whole-of-nation, whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach as it seeks to revitalize the salt industry.

Under the measure, the government shall provide support through appropriate technology and research, as well as adequate financial, production, marketing and other support services, in order to revitalize the salt industry, attain increased income for salt farmers and salt producers, achieve salt self-sufficiency, and become a net exporter of salt.

Gov’t revenues projected to reach P3.73T in 2023

Maharlika Fund won’t have negative impact on 2024 nat’l budget: Diokno

The proposed Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) will not have a negative impact on next year’s national budget, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno said Friday.

Asked if the MIF has already been factored into the estimated P5.768-trillion national budget for next year, Diokno said, “There will be no negative impact on the budget.”

Earlier, Diokno said the MIF is expected to be operational before the end of the year, as he expressed optimism that the MIF bill, after being approved by Congress last week, will be signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. before he delivers his second State of the Nation Address on July 24.

“The only contribution of the NG (national government) here will be initially the P50 billion that will come from BSP (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas). These are dividends, declared dividends by the BSP for the national government for the next two years. After that there will be no more contribution from the BSP,” Diokno said at a press briefing following the 185th Development Budget Coordination Committee Meeting.

The MIF bill states that the Maharlika Fund would be created using:

* P50 billion from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP)

* P25 billion from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP)

* P50 billion from the national government

The contribution from the national government would come from the following sources:

* Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ total declared dividends

* National government’s share of the income of PAGCOR

* Properties, real and personal

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr .’s economic managers on Friday estimated government revenues to reach PHP3.73 trillion in 2023 and PHP6.62 trillion in 2028.

identified by the DOF-Privatization and Management Office

* Other sources such as royalties and/or special assessments

“The contribution of Landbank is P50 billion and DBP is [P25 billion] … these are very small relative to their investible funds,” Diokno said, noting that the contributions of state-owned banks to the MIF are “only 3% of their total investible funds.”

“Why is it smart for them to invest in the Maharlika fund? Because right now they are investing in low returns. In fact, the 10-year ROI (return on investment) of Landbank is 4.23%, this is a combination of where they put their money, and for DBP it’s less than 4%,” the Finance chief said.

“But there’s a possibility that if they invest their money in Maharlika it could earn as much as 8.64%,” he added.

The Bureau of the Treasury and the Department of Budget and Management have said that the MIF will free up the government’s fiscal space as the burden of borrowing to fund infrastructure projects will be unloaded on the sovereign wealth fund.

The national government operates on a fiscal deficit—meaning state spending exceeds its income— which compels it to borrow from both domestic and foreign sources to plug the shortfall.

“I think it [Maharlika] will have a positive impact. If this succeeds, as I said, what is in the budget is around 5-6% [of GDP] spending for infrastructure. If our desire for public-private partnerships and Maharlika succeed, I think we can possibly look at around 10-12% infrastructure as a percent of GDP because we have already identified something like 194 projects,” Diokno said.

The latest projection was higher than last year’s forecast that revenues for 2023 and 2028 would be PHP3.63 trillion and PHP6.59 trillion, respectively.

“This is reflected in our strong fiscal performance for the first four months of the year with actual revenues inching up to PHP1.26 trillion, higher by 11.2 percent due to improved tax administration,” Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman said in a briefing held after the 185th meeting of the inter-agency Development Budget Coordination Committee (DBCC).

“This is projected to reach PHP3.729 trillion by the end of the

year and further rise to PHP6.622 trillion in 2028 through the implementation of revenue-generating measures over the medium term,” she added.

The economic team also revised the revenue assumption for 2024 (PHP4.20 trillion from PHP4.06 trillion, 2025 (PHP4.69 trillion from PHP4.58 trillion), 2026 (PHP5.26 trillion from PHP5.16 trillion), and 2027 (PHP5.90 trillion from PHP5.82 trillion).

Pangandaman, chair of DBCC, said disbursements will remain above 20 percent of the gross domestic product over the entire plan period, with priority given to infra-

structure and socio-economic development.

While it was retained to over 20 percent, disbursement was adjusted to PHP5.23 trillion from PHP5.09 trillion for 2023, PHP5.56 trillion from PHP5.40 trillion for 2024, PHP5.89 trillion from PHP5.76 trillion for 2025, PHP6.37 trillion from PHP6. 25 trillion for 2026, PHP7.02 trillion from PHP6.92 trillion for 2027, and PHP7.77 trillion from PHP7.71 trillion for 2028.

Pangandaman said deficit is also targeted to gradually reach pre-pandemic levels of 3 percent of GDP in 2028 from this year ’s 6.1 percent.

“The DBCC maintains its commitment to ensuring sound fiscal management guided by the Medium-Term Fiscal Framework,” she said.

Biz leaders laud gov’t efforts to curb inflation

Leaders of three of the country’s most influential business groups have recognized inroads made by the government in easing price pressures.

Their sighs of relief came when the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported that headline inflation decelerated further to 6.1 percent yearon-year in May from 6.6 percent in April.

In an interview on Friday, Francis Chua, chair emeritus of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry

(PCCI), said the BSP’s policies have “evidently been effective in controlling the flow of money.”

“The May inflation rate, the lowest so far this year, can be attributed to the Monetary Board’s decision to raise key policy rates, and then finally keep them steady at 6.25 percent,” he said.

Chua, who founded the International Chamber of Commerce’s domestic chapter, also noted the Marcos administration’s efforts to bring down the prices of basic commodities

by addressing supply deficiencies.

“So far, so good,” said Sergio Ortiz-Luis, Jr., president of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, referring to the BSP’s monetary policy-making. “The BSP’s target of slowing inflation down to 4 percent or less later this year is looking more attainable.”

By a stroke of fortune, the declining price of petroleum in the international market also seems to be cooperating with domestic efforts to address inflation, he added.

Carrying the theme “Fulfilling Unity of Local Government Units in Mindanao”, the gathering aims to be an avenue to discuss the important issues of the MLMP and to strengthen the alignment of its thrusts with the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP).

LMP is a formal organization of all the municipalities in the Philippines.

Villar also discussed with the media updates on the Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF), which is a sovereign wealth fund that will be used to invest in a wide range of assets, including foreign currencies, fixed-income instruments, domestic and foreign corporate bonds, commercial real estate and infrastructure projects.

The bill is pending at the Senate, but Villar is optimistic that very soon it will be transmitted to the Office of the President.

But the Nuggets – who fell apart in the fourth quarter of Game 2 for their lone loss of the series – didn’t fold, even with their two-time MVP still out. Murray made a 3-pointer to stop Miami’s 8-0 spurt, and Jeff Green made a huge corner 3 from near the Heat bench for a 94-85 edge with 6:21 left.

Jokic checked out with Denver up 10. He came back with the Nuggets up nine.

Miami didn’t take advantage of that chance, and now finds itself on the wrong end of history. Teams that take a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals have won 35 out of 36 previous times, and the Heat will have to buck that trend to keep Denver from winning its title.

The Nuggets even survived a scare. Jokic tweaked his right ankle when he landed on the back of Max Strus’ foot midway through the opening quarter. He remained in the game after it happened,

Green Archers near finals

Reigning champion EcoOil-La Salle tightened up its screws in the second half to put away the feisty University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 107-78, in Game 1 of their semifinal duel in the 2023 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Green Archers opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run to stretch the lead to in a commanding 61-45 advantage on the way to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three

series.

La Salle has a chance to finish off Perpetual and book a return trip to the best-of-three finals with another win in Game 2 on Tuesday

at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

“I’ve been mentioning that we’re really trying to build good habits here. We just challenged the team in terms of their individual defense, especially in the second half na kailangang ma-contain namin ang Perpetual,” said La Salle assistant coach Gian Nazario.

Mark Nonoy fired away five triples and finished with 22 points in only 18 minutes of play for the

Green Archers.

EJ Gollena provided spark off the bench with 11 points while Bright Nwankwo made his presence felt inside with 10 points and 13 rebounds for La Salle, which led by as many as 33 points. Dabawenyo cager Francis Escandor continued to play well under coach Topex Robinson firing 8 points.

Skipper Jielo Razon and Cyrus Nitura had 17 and 15 points, respectively, for the Altas, who came

close to within 42-50 at the turn only to run out of steam.(PBA.com)

Nuggets a win away from first NBA title

MIAMI — Aaron Gordon scored 27 points, Nikola Jokic added 23 and the Denver Nuggets moved one win away from their first NBA championship by beating the Miami Heat, 108-95, on Friday night (Saturday, Manila time) to take a 3-1 lead in the title series.

Bruce Brown scored 21 off the bench for the Nuggets, who took both games in Miami to grab complete command. They’ll have three chances to win one game for a title, two of those in Denver, the first of them in what’s sure to be a raucous atmosphere for Game Five on Monday night.

Jamal Murray had 15 points and 12 assists — his fourth consecutive double-digit assist game — for Denver.

Jimmy Butler scored 25 points for Miami, which has now fallen into 3-1 holes in each of its last three finals appearances — this one joining 2014 and 2020. Bam Adebayo had 20 points and

11 rebounds for the Heat, while Kyle Lowry had 13 points.

The Heat walked off the floor in silence, fully aware of how much trouble they’re in now.

The Nuggets were overwhelming favorites to start the series, for obvious reasons. Denver was the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed; Miami was the Eastern Conference’s No. 8 seed. The Nuggets had won nine of the last 10 regular-season meetings between the teams, and their run of success over the Heat has continued through four games of the finals.

Denver led by 13 going into the fourth, and Miami came out for the final quarter with appropriate desperation. The Heat scored the first eight points, Jokic committed his fifth foul and had to go to the bench with 9:24 left — and it was down to 86-81 when Butler converted a threepoint play with 8:42 remaining.

A Rose blooms; Chance for Edge Davao to watch `Swingderella’

Truth is, I seldom watch the Golf Channel.

However, every time I get the chance to turn on the TV to watch, I see Rose Zhang.

The first time I saw Rose was during a college tournament last year with her Stanford University teammates. As I watched her play, I had a feeling that this lady golfer is one player to watch.

And each time I see her on TV, I’m always reminded of our Dabawenya golf star Alessandra Zozobrado-Nagayo, nicknamed by our editor in chief Neil as “Swingderella”.

Believe me, I watch KDramas more than any other channels since Covid to keep my sanity I guess (LoL), that is why I had a feeling that I should start following Ms. Zhang online. And so I searched for her and found her IG, an account also followed by our Dabawenya golf star.

Below her IG description as an athlete is the Bible verse, Romans 12:2. That would give you an idea on how she conducts herself as an amateur golfer and professional athlete this time.

She is now the talk in the professional golf community because Ms.Zhang won her professional tournament on her debut, at the Mizuho Americas Open hosted by Michelle Wie, becoming the second lady player to win an LPGA event on their first try since 1951. That victory gave

her $412,500 prize money and an automatic LPGA Tour membership.

Next time, her PR team should tell her to avoid using that black bottle because it rubs the black rubber on her white and shiny teeth each time she would take a drink from that bottle. Bottles should always be white. Why? During the interview, it was clearly visible the black spot on her beautiful front tooth! It simply destroyed that beautiful smile. I don’t know what’s on the mind of the TV coverage team or the cameraman at that time, he or she should have kept that shot zoomed out!

Nadaut ang “Close Up” Smile! Right Edge Davao golf columnist Chito Malabanan?

Talking about Davao’s “Swingderella”, the last time we checked she was nursing an injury and hopefully she is all fine now while she is in the States for her studies.

But wait, there are information flowing to our Edge Davao Sports Desk that she may be seeing action this month at a golf club, two and a half hours by drive from our current location. If this pushes through, this will be a great opportunity to cover!

Edge Davao is just excited! Abangan!
