ice President Sara Duterte told former vice presidential candidate Walden Bello to stop “obsessing” over her and to stop playing as the victim of an “imaginary case of political persecution.”

Bello was arrested on Monday for two counts of the cyber libel charges filed by former Davao City Information Officer Jefry Tupas.

In March this year, Bello brought up the issue of Tupas after then-May-

Public warned on Love Scam

T

he Bureau of Customs-Davao District has warned on a fraudulent online scheme where scammers posing as foreigners would befriend later engage on an “long-distance” online relationship with their would-be victims.

These lovers would then tell their victims that they have sent gifts and would need a deposit of payment so they can get their packages held by the Bureau of Customs.

Dubbed as “Love Scam” this online fraud earns by duping people to pay for the parcels containing gifts that were supposed to be sent by their foreigner lovers and are kept at the Customs warehouse.

Prof. Karen Joyce Cayamanda, an associate professor of the University of the Philippines Mindanao, made this recommendation in her paper on risk communication management presented at the 3rd International Conference on Multidisciplinary Industry and Academic Research (IC-

MIAR) held online on July 29-30, 2022.

Cayamanda said sharing community-based experiences can show how community members react and adapt to disasters and stimulate risk perception and communication among residents, from which community mechanisms can emerge that

he Indak-indak sa Kadayawan stage will be set up starting August 14, the event organizer said.

Kadayawan 2022 Event organizer Harold Quibete, in an interview with the Davao City Disaster Radio Monday, said that the hauling and installation of the component of the stage for the Indak-Indak sa Kadayawan at the San Pedro Square will start with a partial road closure in the afternoon of August 14, 2022 afternoon. The hauling of the materials for the satellite performance areas will start in the afternoon of August 18, 2022.

Quibete said that for this year’s 37th Kadayawan sa Dabaw competition, they plan to set up an “arena-type stage” and will also put up 14 LED walls to allow the viewers to see the performances better.

SEC declares cease and desist stop against Alphanetworld permanent

he Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has made permanent the order stopping AlphanetWorld Corporation, which has been doing business under the name NWorld, from soliciting investments from the public without the necessary license.

In a resolution dated July 19, the Commission En Banc denied for lack of merit AlphanetWorld’s motion to lift the February 23 cease and desist order (CDO) issued against the company for its unauthorized solicitation, offer and/or sale of securities.

In its motion to lift the CDO, AlphanetWorld argued that the purchase of its products and packages are plain sales transactions, in contrast to the SEC Enforcement and Investor Protection Department’s finding that it has engaged in the sale of securities.

“The evidence presented by NWorld in support of its allegations and arguments therein simply failed to trounce the finding of this Commission

that NWorld is engaged in the sale of securities in the form of investment contract, and is in continuous violation of Section 8 of the [Securities Regulation Code],” the Commission En Banc held.

The SEC issued the CDO against AlphanetWorld and its officials, including President Juluis Allan C. Nolasco, after finding that the company has been selling and/or offering investment packages priced from P4,750 to P19,000 in exchange for NWorld products and a guaranteed monthly return of up to P127,000. Business transactions are supposedly made through the company’s official webpage.

PH economy grows 7.4% in 2nd quarter DITO calls out Globe, Smart for alleged abuse of dominance

ITO Telecommunity, the country’s latest mobile telecommunications provider, has filed complaints before the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) against two other firms -- Globe Telecom and Smart Communications -- for their alleged abuse of their market dominance through interconnection woes.

In a press conference on Monday, DITO chief administrative officer Adel Tamano said the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) legally requires telecommunications companies (telco) to interconnect with all telcos in the market, allowing calls and text to and from other service providers.

“Now, you must comply with that. Very clearly Globe and Smart are not complying with that,” Tamano said.

He complained of Globe and Smart’s “abuse” of their market dominance to “hinder our growth,” and estimated DITO’s current market share at around 5 percent of the mobile telecommunications space. “[DITO’s market share would be] much, much higher if interconnections were okay,” he said.

To date, DITO chief technology officer Rodolfo Santiago said only 20 to 30 percent of calls made by DITO subscribers to Globe and Smart are successful, with the rest failing to get through.

In response, PLDT -- Smart’s parent company -- said they have yet to receive the complaint but assured that they “have always supported and ensured fair competition in the telco industry.”

he Philippine economy grew 7.4 percent in the second quarter, the state statistics bureau said on Tuesday.

This follows the revised 8.2 percent gross domestic product growth rate posted in the first quarter of the year.

The Philippine Statistics Authority said this was the 5th consecutive quarter of growth since the country went into re-

cession during the height of the pandemic.

Last year, the country’s GDP growth rate rebounded to 12 percent after COVID-19 restrictions were slightly eased. In 2020, the economy shrank to a historic low of -16.9 percent as many indus-

EDITORIAL Disaster response It’s the season of floods again. Monday night’s downpour in the uplands of Bukidnon caused waist-high floodwaters in some parts of Davao City as reported by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

As a result, more than 200 families fled their homes, and one person was declared missing. The flooding also stranded people on their way home. Areas near the Davao River, particularly in Bankerohan, were placed under Code Red. Some 233 families evacuated to safer grounds on Monday night in seven barangays along the Davao River.

It’s becoming a usual occurrence during the rainy months of June to August. And yet, we still struggle with the same problems.

A professor from the University of the Philippines Mindanao thinks it is time to codify the experiences of barangays and villages and to share their best practices with the end view of coming up with apt responses.

The paper coincides with the mandate of Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte for barangays to consolidate similar concerns, including security and disaster response. This is in line with the drafting of the city government’s executive-legislative agenda on disaster response.

Putting Cayamanda’s work into concrete action should help get the ball rolling. UP Mindanao could very well put its hand up in helping the city government craft the executive-legislative document based on the study made by the good professor. Likewise, the city government could also benefit from the paper to see how it can put the study to good use as a foundation of its disaster response code.

BOMBS IN THE FOOD CHAIN The Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations estimates that up to 35% of the losses in annual crop production worldwide are due to pests – insects, weeds, plant diseases, rodents, and birds.

Of the estimated one million insects in the world, between 150 to 200 species frequently cause serious damage to crops, the FAO says.

When losses due to pests are combined with post-harvest losses, worldwide food losses would amount to 45%. “This is almost half of the world’s potential food supply,” the UN food agency discloses.

Corazon C. Davis, in her 1993 report, “Environmental concerns about pesticide use in Philippine agriculture,” wrote: “The use of pesticides in Philippine agriculture continues to increase despite the adoption and promotion of the integrated pest management program.

“Insecticides constitute approximately 55%, fungicides 22% and herbicide 16% of pesticides used in the country for rice, corn, vegetables and plantation crops,” Davis wrote.

Pesticide also refers to “any substance or mixture substances intended for use as a plant regulator, defoliant, or desiccant.”

The first records of pesticides come from the ancient Greeks. And for a long time, no one seemed to question the safety of pesticides. Not until 1962, when marine biologist Rachel Carlson wrote the now classic, Silent Spring.

In her book, Carlson described how pesticides cause long-term hazards to birds, fish, other wildlife, and humans, but provides only short-term gains to controlling the pests.

As a result of Carson’s book, then American President John F. Kennedy formed a science advisory committee to investigate her findings. They were soon confirmed, and DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) – which won for its discoverer, Dr. Paul Muller, a Nobel Prize – and several other pesticides were banned

from the United States six years later.

But despite a number of problems that have surfaced since what experts called as “the Era of Optimism,” pesticides use continues to grow.

“Farmers now apply about one pound of pesticides per year for every person on the planet, 75% of it in industrial countries,” Peter Weber, of the Washington-based Worldwatch Institute, reported.

This situation alarms scientists.

“Pesticides are like bombs being dropped in the food web creating enormous destruction,” deplored Dr. K.L. Heong, then entomologist of the Laguna-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).

Unknowingly, pesticides are killing more than just the pests.

“Some pesticides harm the living organisms other than the targeted pest,” the Davao-based Technical Assistance Center for the Development of Rural and Urban Poor observes. “Some (pesticides) travel to the food chain to bioaccumulate in higher organisms.”

Gretta Goldenman and Sarojini Rengam explain in their

book, Pesticides and You, that pesticides are concentrated even to toxic levels via the food chain.

Thus, an increase feeding on plants sprayed with pesticides might be eaten by another insect which might be eaten by a bird.

Pesticides are also hazardous to human beings. They can enter the human body through the mouth, lungs, digestive system, or skin, according to health experts.

Depending on the pesticide, health effects can be immediate (acute) or they can occur after years of low-level exposure.

Acute poisoning generally occurs after an accident on the skin or drinking a bottle of pesticides. Medical doctors say the symptoms of acute poisoning occur within 24 hours: vomiting, headache, respiratory problems, heart failure, etc.

Long-term effects of pesticides include skin disorders, damage to internal organs (liver, kidneys, lungs), increased sensitivity to pesticides and effects on the progeny, according to medical experts.

The Geneva-based World Health Organization (WHO) expects poisonings to increase as pesticide use in developing

countries, now concentrated on cash crops like rice, cotton, coffee, intensifies and expands to other crops.

“In industrialized countries, where people are exposed to a mix of chemical hazards, the lines of cause and effect aren’t so clear,” Weber reported. “Isolated illnesses can be impossible to link to a cause.”

Meanwhile, pesticides continue to lose their effectiveness against crop-destroying pests as a result of “genetic selection,” the Worldwatch Institute claims.

At least 520 insects and mites, 150 plant diseases, and 113 weeds have developed resistance to one or more pesticides meant to control them. In addition, at least 17 insect species are resistant to all major classes of insecticides, and several plant diseases are immune to most fungicides used against them.

“Resistance to pesticides is as natural as evolution,” Weber reminded. “Resistant strains develop particularly quickly when farmers overuse pesticides and try to eliminate pests rather than control them. Kill 99.9 percent of the insects in a field, and the survivors are a superstrain.”

ETYMOLOGY AND PLANT NAMES Outside the areas named after trees, birds, fish, and bats, a good number of Davao locations trace their appellations to common plants like root crops and staples, though these can also refer to common names of animals. There are also sites named after native rice varieties, sweet potatoes (kamote), taro (gabi), corn, adlay (Job’s tears, scientific name Coix lacryma-jobi), sugar cane (tubo), yam (ubi), cassava (balanghoy or kamoteng-kahoy), and bananas (wild and cultivated).

Ticulon, a barangay of Malita, Davao Occidental, is named after an upland, glutinous colored rice (tikoloon). Anibong, a village in Maco, Davao de Oro, is a rice variety though its most likely provenance belongs to a tree with the same name (Oncosperma filamentosum Blume.).

Molanbolan (origin of Manambulan, a village of Tugbok

District, Davao City) is an upland, non-glutinous, white rice variety. Bungbong (provenance of Bongbong, Pantukan, Davao de Oro) and babag (a barangay of Monkayo, Davao de Oro) are upland rice varieties of the glutinous kind.

Dumagat (also a tribal name), kagayan (as in Cagayan de Oro) and kalauag (Calauag, a town in Quezon Province) are rice and corn varieties while komagingking (likely origin of Kingking, Pantukan, Davao de Oro) and buaya (also a common name of a crocodile) are rice varieties.

Dauis (Dawis), a village in Digos City is named after Dauis, Bohol, which is turn was named after a sweet potato variety with the same name. The same etymology goes to Misamis (name of two provinces) which comes from another camote species with similar distinctive-

ness. And one must not forget that Mintal (a district of Davao City) is also another kind of sweet potato.

How about bananas? Well, names like Bonguyan (surname for former Davao City vice mayor and councilor), Calibo (a town in Aklan Province), Daliao (a district of Davao City), and Candaba (a town in the province of Pampanga) are banana and plantain varieties found in the archipelago.

Meanwhile, binuaya (provenance of the placename Cabuaya, a village of Mati City) and Malinao (a village of Laak, Davao de Oro) are actually ubi (yam) varieties. Mt. Busao (in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental) and Mambusao (a mountain in Compostela, Davao de Oro) could have provenance from busao, a gabi variety that grows in upland, moist areas. Papañga (possibly the origin of Pampan-

ga, a village of Davao City) refers to another taro species.

Kaputian (former town of the Island Garden City of Samal) likely comes from potian (a rattan species) or putian (a kind of banana). Poliquit, a familiar surname, is a morphology of poriquit or porikit, another banana variety. Still speaking of bananas, the most common among Visayans are cardaba, tundan, tindok, moko, sab-a, morado, binangay, and agutay.

Elsewhere, there are also numerous Davao places named after fish, birds, and trees.

Binuang (a barangay of Maco, Davao de Oro) and Cabinuangan (earliest name of New Bataan, Davao de Oro) trace their names to binuang (Octomeles sumatrana), while cuambog (indigenous name of Mabini, Davao de Oro) is from a tree (Dillenia philippinensis).

Hagonoy (a town of Davao

del Sur; a common weed, Chromolaena odorata), piapi (a district of Davao City; a tropical mangrove, Avicennia rumphiana), agdao (a Tagakaulo tree, Premna odorata Blanco), and padada (a town in Davao del Sur; Sonneratia alba J. Smith) are generally plant names.

If labeled after the birds, places like Callawa, a barangay of Davao City (from Manobo kilyawa, black-naped oriole known as Oriolus chinensis) Bacaca, another city area (indigenous name of kingfisher or Halcyon leucocephala) come to mind.

On the other hand, Darong (a barangay of Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur) and Indangan (a barangay of Tibungko Dsitrict, Davao City) are named after the yellow tang, a saltwater fish also known as labahita and scientifically classified as Zebrasoma flavescens.

SIBULAN River in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur is popular for its high-adrenaline whitewater tubing.

During summer, water sports enthusiasts, local and foreign tourists visit the area to get wet and wild.

This writer, together with some friends, wanted to get to the extreme and decided to chase rapids by going water tubing in Sibulan River.

Upon arriving at the starting point, the river guides were already convened and immediately conducted a brief orientation. Wearing of vest is a must as safety is always the first priority.

Then we went down to the river, sat on the rubber tires with rubber tied at the center to sit on and handles for the hands to grip and balance. By the way, the rubber tires are designed by the guides and are safe enough for the rapids.

The rest of the way is like a roller coaster ride.

While settling on the rubber tires, savor first the calm and tranquility of the river before starting the tremendously challenging yet fun activity.

Chasing rapids at Sibulan River In just a few moments, you’ll get the taste of Sibulan River’s bouncy and rough welcome. Then will be told to form a train (single file) with one of the guides steering the group. It was slow at first then the current will become very fast, the rapids become intense, then you will experience sudden drops, and bumps, and get into whirlpools.

You will laugh at the same time scream with delight.

With the intense rapids, it is better not to flip over or toss over and always listen to the river guides. It will take you an hour to finish the whole course.

Navigating the 2 to 3-kilometer course (Sibulan River) is just worth P350 per head for a minimum of 5 persons inclusive of unlimited bumps, screams, and fun.

Players and enthusiasts alike filled the barangay courts with excitement as the country’s favorite sport slowly reopens on-

ground from the pandemic.

“It is with excitement that we welcome again our Champion kids from couch to court, and see them playing on team setting,” said Carlo Sampan, MILO Sports Executive.

“At the MILO® Barangay Liga, we see teamwork, discipline and respect in action. Aligned with the brand’s purpose of nourishing kids’ journey to success with nutritious energy and inspiration to grow with sports, the MILO® barangay Liga served as a platform for kids to develop their skills,

build confidence, and become a role model to their peers. More than that, we see a lot of potential talents that we can hone and build as champions in and outside the court,” he added.

Moms also played a vital part to the Champion journey of their kids, even as they compete in the MILO Barangay Liga.

“Yung mga ganitong activities (MBL) ay malaking tulong para sa physical and social needs ng mga bata, kaya full support ako sa kanya (These kind of MBL activities are a big boost for the physical and social needs

of children, that’s why I fully support my child),” said Jean Calude Bunagan from Barangay Tablon, Cagayan de Oro, mother of MBL participant Jean Jeariel Bunagan.

“Aside from giving him words of wisdom and encouragement, I make sure na kumpleto ang kanyang nutrisyon para sa energy na kailangan niya sa sports at sa everyday activities niya (that he has a complete nutrition for the energy he needs in sports and every other activities),” Bunagan added.

MILO® Barangay Liga is well-supported by local government

units, as it is aligned with their development programs for the youth.

“Sports is the best way to get them off the unnecessary or negative influences in the community. It also sends a positive message to everybody, that the government and private sector can work together for the development of the kids. Initiatives like the MILO® Barangay Liga are for our next generation. This is part of our shared legacy with MILO®, and it adds to the positive perception of the community in engaging into sports.

il-Am NBA star Jordan Clarkson can only suit up as a naturalized player and chances of the Fil-Am NBA player seeing action as a local for the Philippines in Fiba-sanctioned events has been shut down.
