Pilot hurt as spray plane malfunctions

A

65-year old pilot was hurt after the aerial spray plane he was flying malfunctioned and forced him to land in a mountainous area in Davao de Oro on Thursday morning (September 23).

A report from Police Regional Office (PRO) 11 indicated that the plane was in spraying pesticides over Marsman Drysdale (MD) Isalon Banana Plantation situated at Barangay Bongabong, Pantukan, Davao de Oro Province when the aircraft malfunctioned.

The report said the

plane eventually hit a Falcata tree that forced Capt.

Lucas Ceromenes to land at the mountainous and grassy portion along the boundary of Purok 6, Lower Maubog, Tibagon, Pantukan and Tagnanan, Mabini at around 6:30 a.m.

Ceromenes sustained minor injuries after he managed to bail out the plane.

However, the plane with body number RP-R 2508 owned by South Pacific Aerial Spraying Services (SPAS) incurred heavy damage due to the impact of the accident.

It is also stated in the DILG guidelines that the

patient must also have his/ her bathroom and there are no household members vulnerable or have co-morbidities (senior citizens, people with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women).

Schlosser said that those who would want to opt for home isolation will be checked if they indeed are qualified for it.

EDITORIAL Polluters ought to be penalized For the nth time, rivers and waterways in Davao City have been identified as among the most notorious contributors of wastes especially plastic wastes that destroy our environment.

Plastic wastes are non-biodegradable and deadly. Backed by studies, the scientific community has time and again blamed this kind of solid wastes as responsible for destroying coastal ecosystems and killing aquatic creatures.

Several international studies pinpoint Philippine rivers as sources of these deadly plastic wastes. In fact, a number of researches have identified big Philippine rivers such as Pasig and other waterways as top-ranking contributors of plastic wastes to the oceans of the world.

Very recently, Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (IDIS), a prominent environmental advocacy group, has reported 3,700 solid wastes of various kinds collected from different rivers and waterways in Davao City’s wastershed areas.

Your legal remedies: • On the account of the unfaithfulness of your wife – You can file a criminal case against your wife and his paramour for Adultery. A sexual infidelity offense of a wife and his paramour is punishable under Article 333 of the Revised Penal Code. For you to successfully prosecute a criminal case for adultery against your wife, the following elements must be proven: (a) The woman you are suing is legally married to you. Juvy Acaba, an elementary school teacher, said, “I love teaching because it is a two-way process: the students can learn from me and I can learn from them.” Rosario R. Moreno, a former college professor, also said that teaching is learning.

While scrolling my Facebook account recently, I came across a story posted by Steven Jacobs. It tells the story of a teacher and a student who was caught stealing a watch. Instead of telling the whole class who was the thief, he remained silent. Read the whole story in order for you to get the lesson: An old man meets a young man who asks: “Do you remember me?” And the old man says no.

Then the young man tells him he was his student, And the teacher asks: “What do you do, what do you do in life?”

The young man answers: “Well, I became a teacher.”

“Ah, how good, like me?” asks the old man.

“Well, yes,” the young man replied. “In fact, I became a teacher because you inspired me to be like you.”

The old man, curious, asks the young man at what time he decided to become a teacher.

And the young man tells him the following story: “One day, a friend of mine, also a student, came in with a nice new watch, and I decided I wanted it. I stole it, I took it out of his pocket. Shortly after, my friend noticed that his watch was missing and immediately complained to our teacher, who was you.

“Then you addressed the class saying, ‘This student’s watch was stolen during classes today. Whoever stole it, please return it.’ I didn’t give it back because I didn’t want to.

“You closed the door and told us all to stand up and form a circle. You were going to search our pockets one by one until the watch was found. However, you told us to close our eyes, because you would only look for his watch if we all had our eyes closed. We did as instructed.

“You went from pocket to pocket, and when you went through my pocket, you found the watch and took it. You kept searching everyone’s pockets, and when you were done you

said ‘open your eyes. We have the watch.’ You didn’t tell me and you never mentioned the episode. You never said who stole the watch either. That day you saved my dignity forever. It was the most shameful day of my life.

“But this is also the day I decided not to become a thief, a bad person, etc. You never said anything, nor did you even scold me or take me aside to give me a moral lesson. I received your message clearly. Thanks to you, I understood what a real educator needs to do. Do you remember this episode, professor?”

The old professor answered, “Yes, I remember the situation with the stolen watch, which I was looking for in everyone’s pocket. I didn’t remember you, because I also closed my eyes while looking.”

This is the essence of teaching: If to correct you must humiliate; you don’t know how to teach.

It takes all kinds of teachers.

As William Arthur Ward puts it: “The mediocre teacher tells.

The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates.

The great teacher inspires.”

Now, if you are a teacher, which are you among those that have been mentioned?

Without teachers, people would have been ignorant. That’s

why they are important in society. “Teachers have the ability to shape leaders of the future in the best way for society to build a positive and inspired future generations and therefore design society, both on a local and global scale. In reality, teachers have the most important job in the world,” explained the website of the University of the People (The Education Revolution).

The parents may be the first teachers of children. But it’s the real teachers that shape the children’s future. “Teachers of all walks of life and subjects have the ability to shape opinions and help form ideas about society, life and personal goals,” the University of the People said.

“Teachers can also expand students’ limits and push their creativity.”

In its website, the University of the People shares some attributes that can inspire their students. These are: Compassion: This is important not only when dealing with the students but also other teachers, other school staff, and parents.

Passion: Teaching can be incredibly stressful, so great teachers must have a deep passion to keep them going every day.

Understanding: Teachers need a deep understanding of

where their students are coming from – their backgrounds, their struggles, and their abilities.

Patience: This attribute is the key. Very true of teaching, and not just patience with the students. Teachers also need patience in dealing with the school system, bureaucracy, and parents as well.

Role model: Teachers must come into work every day knowing their students will soak up their actions like sponges. They must show how to be a good person not just by telling but also by being.

Communication: This should be across generations and cultures. Teachers need to be able to effectively communicate with students from multiple cultures and generations, as well as teaching staff and superiors with various backgrounds and from other generations.

Willingness to put in the effort: If a teacher doesn’t care or doesn’t make the effort, their students won’t either. If a teacher shows students that they do truly care, they’ll do the same.

To end this piece, the words of Herbert Kohl are apt: “One of the beauties of teaching is that there is no limit to one’s growth as a teacher, just as there is no knowing beforehand how much your students can learn.”

On the political front, the party is pushing for the national industrialization policy, a political party development policy that will end turncoatism and amendment to the Philippine Mining Act of 1995.

“Just like any other region, Mindanao is also experiencing the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hence, it has to revisit its priorities and redesign its approaches to better manage similar risks in the future,” PIDS President Aniceto Orbeta Jr. said.

According to the United Nations Development Programme’s socioeconomic impact assessment on COVID-19 in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or BARMM, the region “has been badly hit” by the pandemic.

Further, a survey conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Ministry of Interior and Local Government in the BARMM showed that the pandem-

ic has greatly affected the region’s access to necessities and emergency needs due to restrictions in movement and transportation.

Recent data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that the BARMM reported an 8.2-percent unemployment rate, making it one of the six regions that registered unemployment rates higher than the national estimate of 6.9 percent.

To cope with the economic impacts of the pandemic, MinDA Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said they will “focus [their] efforts on the region’s agriculture and fisheries sectors over the next five years as [they] aim for immediate recovery to counteract the economic slowdown triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

T

he Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is encouraging consumers to patronize businesses that are promoting sustainability like reduced use of plastic products for packaging.

In a webinar on Friday, Consumer Policy and Advocacy Bureau Director Melquiades Marcus Valdez II said consumers must take action and demand for

more sustainable alternatives from businesses and government.

“The consumers can re-evaluate their consumption habits to minimize

plastic use (and) refuse unnecessary plastic whenever possible,” Valdez said. “We must reduce plastic waste towards sustainability consumption and production.”

Private sector stakeholders have partnered with DTI in promoting sustainable products and businesses among consumers.

One wellness shop and drug store vowed to re-

duce the use of plastic in their packaging by 50,000 kilogram of plastic bottles or equivalent to 2.5 million bottles in a year.

The shop said it is the company’s vision to eliminate unnecessary packaging, minimize use of recycled plastic at 20 percent, and promote recyclable and reusable packaging.

On the other hand, consumer confidence remained negative but the index improved from -30.9 percent in the second quarter of this year to -19.3 percent.

BSP exec cites improvement in bank lending

he Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) is still optimistic with the growth of the industry as long as key government policies will be in place.

During the two-day 9th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit from Thursday to Friday, EVAP president Edmund Araga said the pandemic has further slowed down the growth of the local EV industry.

Araga said EV registration in the country dropped 35 percent to 1,015 units from 1,570 units in 2019.

For the past decade, total EV registration in the country reached 12,965 comprising of e-trikes, e-motorcycles, e-jeepneys, and e-cars among others.

“We are hopeful about the passing of the Senate Bill No. 1382 or the Electric Vehicles and Charging Stations Act last May. At the same time, the House Bill 4075, the Lower House’s version of the Electric Vehicle and Charging Stations Act has already passed the

second reading,” Araga said.

He added that the issuance of the charging infrastructure guidelines and policy by the Department of Energy (DOE) will help in motivating businesses to put up and adopt EV charging stations by providing fiscal incentives.

Low-cost charging for EV is one of the top three factors for consumers to motivate them in purchasing EV, a recent study by Frost & Sullivan said.

Araga said the administrative order of the Land Transportation Office consolidating guidelines on the classification, registration, and operations of types of EV paves the way for further guidance for consumers’ purchase decisions and for local manufacturers to plan out their strategies.

DOE Secretary Alfonso Cusi also echoed that government support will help the local EV industry thrive even amid the pandemic.

P3-million facility to enhance food sufficiency drive in Butuan

he Department of Agriculture (DA) 13 (Caraga) formally handed over to the local government a PHP3-million food production facility that would help boost the city’s food sufficiency efforts.

In a statement sent to the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Saturday, the DA-13 said the facility was turned over on Friday by DA-13 Executive Director Abel James Monteagudo to Butuan City Mayor Ronnie Vicente Lagnada.

The facility, situated in Barangay Pigdaulan, features a greenhouse, hydroponics, and a nursery with a fertigation system.

“Fertigation is an irrigation system in which the nutrients needed are already mixed with the water. Another component of the project is a season-long training that started in June,” the statement said.

Lagnada thanked the department for its continued technical and project support for the agricultural development of Butuan City.

“This project will support the food production initiatives of the city, especially in this time of pandemic where the need for food sufficiency is really felt,” he was quoted as saying in the DA13 statement.

BSP backs measure for protection vs cybercrime

he Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Saturday said it supports a Senate measure that aims to protect financial customers from cybercrime, as digital transactions in the country continued to rise due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, the central bank said the proposed Bank Account, E-Wallet, and Other Financial Accounts Regulation or Senate Bill No. 2380 would help authorities counter cybercriminals and syndicates from attacking bank accounts and e-wallets.

The measure covers phishing, fraudulent bank transactions, misrepresentation, among other things, they said.

“The legislative measure will strengthen the country’s legal framework for financial consumer welfare and foster greater public

awareness on cybersecurity,” the BSP explained.

Aside from this, the BSP pointed out that its immediate passage would boost the public’s confidence in digital transactions “and promote the country’s financial stability.”

Sen. Grace Poe, who filed the bill, said safeguards should be put in place to protect digital platforms operating in the country.

One of its goals is to require banks and financial institutions to respond to cybercrime cases “with more urgency” and improve online platforms, payment schemes, and data security.

Citing BSP data, she added that majority or at least 98 percent of the crime reports filed by banks from March 15 to May 18 last year were “online in nature,” worth P60.6 million.

How to benefit from the global recovery S ometimes it’s easy to forget that things are not always going south, especially when you are in the middle of a pandemic.

The reality is, there’s reason to hope that things are turning around for the better. We just need to focus our lens to the right direction.

Take for example the Standard & Poor’s 500 first half 2021 report where the index is showing a 14.4 percent yearto-date growth. This index is widely regarded as the benchmark to measure the health of large capitalization US equity companies.

Sometimes we become paralyzed in the corner of inactivity because we lack the necessary information to make a good and sound decision. When we identify growth trends, it means going out of one’s way to actively seek the action on the ground.

The reality is that while some doors were closed during the global pandemic, some were also opened, and some were created by alert and enterprising individuals. And most of these happened online!
