awyer Lawrence Bantiding, head of the City Treasurer’s Office (CTO), said the city government of Davao collected a measly P46,293 amusement tax as of April this year.

The decrease in amusement tax collection was noted since last year due to the closure of cinemas and cancellation of events because of movement restrictions as well as the imposition of community quarantine to contain the spread of Covid-19.

This is also the reason why Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang is pushing

for the legalization of online sabong in Davao City as it is perceived to generate nearly P32 million from amusement tax.

“You can just imagine, we are now on the third quarter and we only have P46,000 amusement tax collected and I am very sure we really need this ordinance,” he said.

Dayanghirang is

referring to the ordinance proposed by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to his committee on finance ways and means and appropriation regulating e-sabong activities broadcasted in Davao city, which was recently enacted by the city council.

In the said ordinance, the city will be taxing the franchisee for an estimated amount of P73,912,500 per year to help raise funds for the city’s efforts against Covid-19.

3 call center agents arrested in buy-bust

hree call center agents and two others including a security guard, were arrested in an anti-drugs operation in Davao City.

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) identified the call center agents as Mark Atillo, alias “Bayot”, George Cabanilla, and Maria Bantang.

Also arrested was Marco Apa, and security guard Marco Pareja.

The suspects were arrested in a rented house in Matina here on Wednesday (June 16).

According to Maj. Neil M Vistar, deputy station commander of Talomo Police Station, who led the operation, Atillo and Cabanilla were

confederating in selling a suspected shabu to the police poseur buyer while the three other suspects were caught in the act of engaging in a drug session.

The police were able to recover several sachets of suspected shabu with an estimated value of P48,000, and some drug paraphernalia.

Also seized were bullets from a caliber .38 revolver from Pareja. Talomo Chief of Police Sean Logronio said this is one of the biggest groups of arrested drug personalities in a single operation. “ I already have given these people a fair warning to mend their ways or face the long arms of the law,

19 more brgys in Dav Occ now declared drug-free

ineteen more barangays in Davao Occidental have been declared drug- free by the Regional Oversight Committee Barangay Drug Clearing (ROCBDC) in a ceremony held at Malita town last Tuesday.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) 11 Information Officer Noli Dimaandal said the declaration was the result of intensified antiillegal drugs campaign by the local authorities.

The barangays in Davao Occidental given drugcleared status are Bolila, Buhangin, Culaman, Felis, Kibalatong, Kidalapong, Kilalag, Lagumit, Little Baguio, Macol, Mana, Manuel Peralta, New Argao, Pangaleon, Pangian, Pinalpalan, Talogoy, including barangays Tical and Sanghay of Malita town.

He said a barangay has to meet all the criteria to be declared drug-cleared, as set forth in Section 8 of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) Regulation Number 3, Series of 2017: the non-availability of drug supply in the area and the absence of drug transit activity, clandestine drug laboratory, clandestine drug warehouse, clandestine chemical warehouse, marijuana cultivation site, drug den or resort, drug pusher and drug user, the absence of protectors, coddlers, and financiers.

City to convert 6 schools into isolation facilities

ity Health Office Acting Head Dr. Ashley Lopez announced on Wednesday that the city government of Davao is eyeing six schools to be developed into isolation facilities due to the surge of Covid-19 cases in Davao City.

“As of Monday, isa palang ang nahimuan og assessment ang Mintal Elementary School. We have five more. We have ongoing expansion for isolation facilities,” Lopez said during the Covid-19 Alert program of the Davao City Disaster Radio

Lopez cited Traveler’s Inn, which has 100 beds, will be opened also but they are just waiting for the staff to be deployed in the site. He added that the said inn will be a comfortable isolation facility for Covid-19 patients as it also

has some amenities found in a hotel.

On June 12, which happens to be the 123rd Anniversary of Philippine Independence, retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio T. Kirol, 1Sambayan coalition convenor, announced the opposition’s shortlist of nominees for president and vice president. The list included Vice President Leni Robredo, Sen. Grace Poe, former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, House Deputy Speakers Vilma Santos-Recto and Eddie Villanueva, and human rights lawyer Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno.

In a matter of hours, however, four of the nominees politely declined their nomination. Senator Poe and Rep. Recto said, they had no plans of seeking higher office in the 2022 elections. Senator Nancy Binay and Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso also requested that their names be removed from the shortlist.

Much earlier, Sen. Panfilo Lacson rejected 1Sambayan’s invitation on “ideological grounds.” Lacson is the author of the Anti-Terrorism Act, whose constitutionality is being questioned before the Supreme Court by some 1Sambayan coalition members.

VP Leni had admitted she is still in the process of deciding whether to run for President or for Governor of her home province of Camarines Sur. An incredulous Diokno who just lost his quest for a senatorial post in 2019 said he did not aspire to be president and vice president. House Speaker Eddie has already run and lost twice for president. Trillanes said he will run for president, but only if VP Leni will not run for the highest position.

With this situation now, where is the opposition, specifically 1Sambayan, going? We ask this question with nary a ting of heckling anybody.

Leave that preoccupation to the hecklers as heckling abounds in the game of politics. Already a columnist has described the opposition’s initial misfortune as “pathetic”. Another called it an “embarrassment”.

Indeed, we are merely wondering what would happen to the efforts of assembling a united front against the Duterte juggernaut in the 2022 election?

ORDINANCE NO. 0581-21 Series of 2021 AN ORDINANCE REGULATING GATHERINGS IN THE CITY OF DAVAO AND PROVIDING PENALTIES THEREOF Be it ordained by the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Davao City in session assembled, that: SECTION 1. TITLE – This Ordinance shall be known as “AN ORDINANCE REGULATING GATHERINGS IN THE CITY OF DAVAO AND PROVIDING PENALTIES THEREOF.” SECTION 2. COVERAGE – This Ordinance covers all activities, events, occasions, and all other instances wherein people gather together.

Gatherings shall be categorized as follows: 1. Essential Work Meetings and Events a. Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions; b. Workshops, trainings, seminars, conferences; c. Board meetings; d. Consumer trade shows or product event launches; and e. And other analogous events 2. Social Events and Celebrations of Personal Milestones a. Debuts and Birthdays; b. Weddings; c. Gatherings shall be governed by the following rules, provided that the City is under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) or Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ) status: 1. Essential work meetings and events and social events and celebrations of personal milestones shall be allowed in the City, following the Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) No. 2021-001 of the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI);

SECTION 3. DEFINITION OF TERMS.

A. Athleisure Activities – activities which are not technically considered as sports but are used for exercise and relaxation, such as, but not limited to: Zumba, Pilates, Yoga, etc.

B. Contact Sports and Activities – refer to sports or activities that will involve physical contact between and among participants (whether such physical contact is part of the rules of the games or not), or causing them to be within one (1) meter to any other person at any point during the activity (e.g., football, basketball, etc.).

C. Essential Work Meetings and Events – shall refer to a congregation of at least two (2) people, with or without external participants, vital to the sustenance of the operations and business interests of the organization and not for recreational or leisure purposes, such as workshops, trainings, seminars, congresses, conferences, conventions, board meetings, colloquia, conclaves, symposia, company/government recognitions, and press conferences.

D. Event Organizer – any individual or legal entity employed to plan, organize, and manage an event.

E. Maximum Venue Capacity - shall refer to the maximum number of people that may be physically accommodated inside the premises of the venue facility, which shall not be more than limitations set forth by the Fire Code of the Philippines.

F. Minimum Public Health Standards (MPHS). The following are the minimum public health standard that must be observed in all public places: 1) Face mask covering the nose and mouth; 2) Physical distancing of not less than one (1) meter; 3) Availability of handwashing area with soap and water or alcohol; and 4) Other guidelines or policies from the IATF G. Non-contact Sports – shall refer to sports or activities in which participants are physically separated throughout its duration, thus minimizing the possibility of making any form of purposeful or accidental physical contact (e.g., racquet sports, biking, etc.)

H. Public beaches, rivers, streams – are beaches, rivers, and streams that are open to the public and not owned by a private individual or entity; I. Social Events and Celebrations of Personal Milestones – private gatherings to celebrate special occasions such as, but not limited to debut and birthday parties, wedding ceremonies and receptions, engagement parties, wedding anniversaries, family reunions, baptismal and religious rites incidental to the aforementioned activities, and bridal or baby shower.

J. Sports – shall refer to activities practiced through exercise and/ or competitions facilitated by sports organizations or by individual organizers.

K. Sports Training – shall refer to the special process of preparation of sports persons based on scientific principles aimed at improving and maintaining higher performance capacity in different sports activities.

Sports training refers to no contact martial arts training, athletics, basketball, sepak takraw, football, volleyball and the like.

SECTION 4. ONLINE MEETINGS AND EVENTS. All government and private offices are encouraged to shift to online meetings. All online meetings do not need a permit, a guest limit, or curfew. However, real time online production and pre-event activities shall be governed by Section 9.

SECTION 5. PLACES OF WORSHIP. All venues that are habitually and regularly used as a place of worship can open up to fifty percent (50%) of their venue capacity, but they must comply with the following: A. Increase the spaces between their members to not less than one (1) meter; B. Community singing is prohibited, solo singer is allowed who shall be more than three (3) meters away from other people. Unnecessary chatting between individuals should be avoided; C. Members who are below 18 years old, above 65 years old, those with immunodeficiency, comorbidities, other serious health risks and pregnant women may be excused from attending worship and may be provided with online, radio or television prayer opportunities.

2. Community-based gatherings/Barangay Events shall not be more than twenty-five (25) individuals;

SECTION 6. RESTAURANTS, CARINDERIA AND OTHER FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS.

D. Restaurants which offer themselves as venues for events under Section 9 must follow the provisions specified therein.

E. Buffet service shall be allowed only when: i. Food servers are provided; and ii. All food trays are with food covers SECTION 7. SPORTS AND LEISURE A. FITNESS CLUBS, GYMS, AND NON-CONTACT SPORTS. Only noncontact sports shall be allowed as a form of exercise which should be limited to at least one (1) hour and a maximum of two (2) hours daily with absolutely no sharing of equipment. i. All fitness clubs and gyms must be by appointment only. The club or gym can only admit a maximum of five (5) members per hour and at no time can the facemask be taken off inside the club or gym. ii. Group activities for non-contact sports or outdoor fitness and training activities, are allowed in open well-ventilated areas, provided that all participants wear facemasks for the entire duration of the activity and observe a two-meter distance from each other at all times. iii. Clubs, gyms, group activities and other establishments shall monitor the two-hour time limit for their members.

The conduct of social events, celebrations of personal milestones, and essential work meetings and events are allowed subject to the Minimum Public Health Standards (MPHS) and health protocols set under relevant issuances, such as but not limited to Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) No. 2021-001 of the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), IATF Omnibus Guidelines, etc.

Venues shall be allowed to hold social events, celebrations of personal milestones, and essential work meetings and events, provided that the City is under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) or Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ) status. Provided further, that the maximum venue capacity and duration shall be as follows:

B. CONTACT SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES. Cock-fighting (Sabong), billiards, darts, basketball, volleyball, soccer and all other contact sports not enumerated herein are prohibited.

C. ATHLEISURE ACTIVITIES. 1. Organizers of Zumba, pilates, yoga, or other outdoor non-contact group classes must first inform the City Sports Development Division through a request letter with attached exercise schedule list of participants, for approval.

2. A maximum of twenty-five (25) persons (including the instructor/s) is allowed inside the venue.

3. The said organizers must also provide the following to promote health and wellness, in their respective area: a. Identify a designated area i. Preferred area must be a covered court, parking lots, and open spaces to ensure proper air flow system and ventilation. ii. Gyms and other enclosed spaces are not allowed. b. Place a barrier around the designated area to prevent outsiders and non-registered participants to enter. c. Allocate designated spots for participants’ area using tape markers to spread more than two (2) meters apart, in a form of a box. d. Wearing of face masks is still required even during the class. e. Decontamination area must be identified. This includes: i. Hand washing area; ii. Sanitizing footbath mat; iii. Thermal scanner/thermometer; and iv. QR code scanner f. Classes must be scheduled alternately and must have a three (3) hour interval to avoid influx of participants in the area. g. There should be a separate entrance and exit in the venue. h. Instructors must stay on stage and may use megaphone to be heard. Instructors, must also announce precautionary measures before starting the class. i. Extra-curricular activities (such as class photos/group selfies) shall not be allowed before, during and after the said class. j. Spectators shall not be allowed.

D. INDIVIDUAL TRAINING. Face-to-face team sports training shall be absolutely prohibited. Non-professional and professional athletes can train for all kinds of sports with no time limit but they can conduct individual training only. Any training done by more than one (1) person is considered a group activity and must comply with the relevant provisions stated above.

E. INTERNET SHOPS. Internet shops can open for all services except gaming and entertainment streaming. Each shop must skip one place in between each computer unit and sanitize all equipment in between customers. Customers are not allowed to remove their face masks inside internet cafes except for brief periods for eating, drinking water or taking necessary photos.

F. BEACHES RESORTS, POOLS AND THE LIKE. Only establishments with a valid Business Permit and a Certification from the City Tourism/ Department of Tourism are allowed to operate and offer their services to the public.

All gatherings in public beaches, rivers, streams or any other similar places shall be prohibited.

Beach resorts and other similar establishment which offer themselves as venues for events under Section 9 must follow the provisions specified therein.

G. MOUNTAIN RESORTS, FARMS, AND OTHER LEISURE ESTABLISHMENTS. These and other similar establishments which offer themselves as

Non-Essential Events shall be strictly prohibited.

Gatherings for social events, celebrations of personal milestones, and essential work meetings and events shall be guided by the following: A. B. Guests and service suppliers cannot hop from one venue to the other.

C. Where multiple venues are involved, the event organizer shall expressly indicate the same in the application for a special event permit for Essential Meetings and Event Notice for Social Events.

D. For purposes of monitoring, the management of the venue shall allow government representatives to enter the premises immediately preceding, during, and immediately after the event.

E. Successive events may be allowed provided that the maximum venue capacity is complied with and that there is a time for entry and exit of guests, as well as sanitation in between events, so that the two groups cannot gather together.

F. All social events under this section is held outside the home of the celebrant and requires the engagement of at least one special event supplier such as but not limited to entertainers, decorators and lights and sounds technicians and attended by more than one household shall be required to file for an event notice with the Davao City Tourism Operations Office (DCTOO).

G. Event Organizers and suppliers must use their own Business Permits in events.

SECTION 10, OTHER GATHERINGS. A. Parade, motorcades, rallies, and other gatherings in public places are absolutely prohibited. The right to free speech and expression in freedom parks shall be respected but the event must be limited to twenty-five (25) individuals and must be supervised by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the City Health Office (CHO) to ensure that the Minimum Public Health Standards (MPHS) are implemented.

B. Government events for distribution of goods and services can be increased to fifty (50) individuals at a time provided that the following MPHS can be strictly implemented: i. Face mask covering the nose and mouth; ii. Physical distancing of not less than one (1) meter; iii. Availability of handwashing area with soap and water or alcohol.

SECTION 11. PROHIBITED ACTS. The following offenses are prohibited acts under this ordinance; without prejudice to the filing of other criminal, civil or administrative liabilities: A. VIOLATION BY ESTABLISHMENTS. Each establishment is responsible for the monitoring of gatherings within their areas. Establishments shall be liable for any violation of the provisions of this ordinance and shall be penalized as follows: a. 1st Offense – written warning

b. 2nd Offense – Fine of P5,000 and/or suspension of business operations for thirty (30) days from date of violation. c. 3rd Offense – Fine of P5,000 and cancellation of Business Permit Provided that, establishments without a Business Permit shall not be penalized as above but shall immediately be penalized with a fine of P5,000 and immediate closure, pending appropriate action.

B. VIOLATION BY EVENT ORGANIZERS. a. 1st Offense – written warning b. 2nd Offense – Fine of P5,000 and/or suspension of business operations for thirty (30) days from date of violation. c. 3rd Offense – Fine of P5,000 and cancellation of Business Permit Provided that, event organizers without a Business Permit shall not be penalized as above but shall immediately be penalized as above but shall immediately be penalized with a fine of P5,000 and shall not be allowed to organize events in Davao City.

C. VIOLATION BY INDIVIDUALS. Individuals found in violation of the provisions of this ordinance and other related ordinances shall be penalized and fined accordingly.

SECTION 12. ORDINANCE VIOLATION RECEIPT/CITATION TICKET. An ORDINANCE VIOLATION RECEIPT, otherwise known as a CITATION TICKET, shall be issued to violators of this Ordinance. The citation ticket shall state the name and address of the violator, the specific violation committed, and the provisions of the succeeding section, “No Contest Provision.”

The Philippine National Police (PNP) and such other appropriate enforcers as may be commissioned by the City Mayor shall have the power to apprehend violators of this ordinance and issue citation tickets.

The City Mayor may deputize Barangay Officials or representatives of the private sector, non-government organizations and government organizations in the strict implementation of this ordinance, as the need arises.

SECTION 13. NO-CONTEST PROVISION. Any person cited for violation of this Ordinance who does not wish to contest the same and is willing to pay voluntarily within three (3) days the fine imposed under this ordinance prior to the filing of a complaint before the Office of the City Prosecutor shall be allowed to do so, and shall pay the corresponding administrative fine as cited in Section 11 at the Office of the City Treasurer. Availment of the no-contest provision shall exempt a person from criminal liability under this ordinance.

The City Legal Office and the City Treasurer’s Office shall provide for the procedure for the availment of the “No-Contest Provision” and establish a case inventory and recording system of all violators of this ordinance.

All proceeds from the payment of the herein imposed fine shall be apportioned as follows: 1. Sixty percent (60%) of the amount collected per apprehension shall accrue to the apprehending barangay; and, 2. Forty percent (40%) shall accrue to the General Fund of the City.

The share of the barangay shall be remitted directly to the barangay, without need of any further action, on a monthly basis within ten (10) days of the following month. Said amount shall be utilized for COVID-19 response and for other matters incidental thereto.

SECTION 14. SEPARABILITY CLAUSE – If, for any reason, any section or provision of this Ordinance is declared unconstitutional or invalid by a competent court, the remaining sections or provisions not affected thereby shall continue to be in full force and effect.

SECTION 15. REPEALING CLAUSE. All ordinances, resolutions, rules or regulations which are inconsistent with or contrary to the provisions of this Ordinance are hereby repealed, amended or modified accordingly.

SECTION 5. EFFECTIVITY – This Ordinance shall take effect fifteen (15) days after publication, and shall remain in full force and effect until the declaration of the existence of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern is retracted by the World Health Organization, or when the State of Public Health Emergency due to COVID-19 in the country is lifted.

In the Philippines, Father’s Day is officially celebrated every third Sunday of June, according to Proclamation No. 266, series of 1998 issued by the late President Corazon C. Aquino. Unfortunately, like Mother’s Day (celebrated every first Sunday of May), it is not a public holiday.

It is more widely observed by the public perhaps due to American influence.

In the United States, Father’s Day was founded by Sonora Smart Dodd, and celebrated on the third Sunday of June for the first time in 1910.

“Smart held her father in great esteem,” Wikipedia said.

“While hearing a church sermon about the newly recognized Mother’s Day at Central Methodist Episcopal Church, Sonora felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition as well. She approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and suggested her own father’s birthday, of June 5, as the day of honor for fathers.

The Alliance chose the third Sunday in June instead.”

The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington. “Although observance of the holiday faded in the 1920s, over time the idea be-

came popular and embraced across the nation,” Wikipedia noted. “In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson sent a telegraph to Spokane praising Father’s Day services. William Jennings Bryan was another early admirer of the observance. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June each year.”

Speaking of American presidents, a close friend of American president Theodore Roosevelt asked him at one time why he did not take a more active role in supervising his free-spirited daughter, Alice. Roosevelt purportedly replied, “I can be president of the United States, or I can attend to Alice. I can’t do both.”

Such is the quandary of most fathers. They can’t have both worlds; one can be neglected over the other. “To be a successful father,” advised American author Ernest Hemingway, “there’s one absolute rule: when you have a kid, don’t look at it for the first

two years.”

But Sigmund Freud contradicted that idea. “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection,” he once said. William Shakespeare, the father of English literature, agreed: “It is a wise father that knows his own child.”

Joe Kennedy knew this.

For all his shortcomings, his loyalty to his children was absolute. “My business is my family and my family is my business,” he said. At one time, he told Steve Smith, “You know, when I was just trying out for the freshman team for some of those swimming meets, my dad was always there. He was always there.

He did the same for all the kids.”

Spending time with your kids as they grow is one of the best things a father can give to them. When Dr. Gordon Neufeld, a Canadian developmental psychologist, became worried about his 13-yearold slavish imitation of her peers’ language and bearing, he booked a week-long vacation with her at a rented cottage.

Predictably, his daughter balked at the plan, “but we gradually rediscovered the closeness we’d had when she was younger,” Neufeld recalls.

“When the week was over, we both agreed that it had been a great idea.”

Of course, children can learn so many things from their father. Famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison had given his son, Charles Edison, one of the most remarkable lessons in life when he lost almost everything to fire. But Thomas was able, literally, rise from the ashes. Here is the story: On the night of December 9, 1914, the great Edison Industries of West Orange was virtually destroyed by fire. Thomas Edison lost two million dollars that night and much of his life’s work went up in flames. He was insured for only US$238,000, because the buildings had been made of concrete, at that time thought to be fireproof.

“My heart ached for him,” Charles said of his father. “He was 67, not a young man anymore, and everything was going up in flames. He spotted me. ‘Charles,” he shouted, ‘where’s your mother?’ ‘I don’t know, Dad,’ I said. ‘Find her,’ he told me. ‘Bring her here. She will never see anything like this again as long as she lives.’”

The next morning, walking about the charred embers of all his hopes and dreams, Thomas said, “There is great value in disaster. All our mistakes are burned up. Thank God, we can start anew.” And three weeks after the fire, his firm delivered the first phonograph!

“The best gift a father can give to his son is the gift of himself – his time,” wrote C. Neil Strait. “For material things mean little, if there is not someone to share them with.” Another advice, “Live so that your son, when people tell him that he reminds them of you, will stick out his chest, not his tongue.”

Ah, to be a father. “That is the thankless position of the father in the family – the provider for all, and the enemy of all,” deplored J. August Strindberg. And oftentimes, children have a hard time understanding this role.

Consider this story: A young man from a wealthy family was about to graduate from high school. It was the custom in that affluent neighborhood for the parents to give the graduate an automobile. Bill and his father had spent months looking at cars, and the week before graduation they found the perfect car.

Imagine his disappointment when, on the eve of his graduation, Bill’s father handed him a gift-wrapped Bible. Bill was so angry, he threw the Bible down and stormed out of the house.

He and his father never saw each other again after that incident. Years later, it was the news of his father’s death that brought Bill back home again.

As he sat one night, going through his father’s possessions that he was to inherit,

he came across the Bible his father had given him. He brushed away the dust and opened it to find a cashier’s check, dated the day of his high school graduation -- in the exact amount the car they had chosen together.

However successful your father is and how famous he becomes, he will find himself old one day. When was the last time you talked with your father or listened to his moaning? You can’t remember anymore? This story will tell you how much your old father needs you now: It came to pass that a little boy and an old man met in a hospital. There, the two talk about anything . “Sometimes, I drop my spoon,” the boy said. “I do that, too,” the old man seemed to agree. The little boy whispered, “I wet my pants.” The old man laughed, “I do that, too.”

“I often cry,” the boy said.

“So do I,” the old man nodded.

‘But worst of all,” the little boy lamented, “it seems grownups don’t pay attention to me.” The old man touched the hands of the little boy as if he wanted to assure him.

“I know what you mean,” the old man said.

“Be kind to thy father, for when thou were young, who loved thee so fondly as he?” asked Margaret Courtney.

“He caught the first accents that fell from thy tongue, and joined in thy innocent glee.”

China edges Japan 66-57 in ACQ debut

hina made its much-awaited debut in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers (ACQ) with a 66-57 win against Japan to open the Angeles bubble for the third window on Wednesday.

Despite showing signs of rustiness as the team only played in the ACQ for the first time due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Chinese side made its Japanese opponent miss NBA players Yuta Watanabe and Rui Hachimura more with a solid defen-

sive effort.

China slowed Japan down in the first half, holding them to only 20 points including eight in the second quarter.

China then broke away early in the second half, stretching its lead to 22, 57-35, with 8:17 remaining in the fourth period.

Japan came alive midway through the fourth as a barrage of triples sparked a 16-1 run to cut the lead down to seven, 58-51, with 4:13 to play.

I told you so: Lebron L os Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James slammed the NBA on Wednesday as Clippers star Kawhi Leonard became the latest player forced out of the playoffs by injury.

James took to Twitter to offer an angry “I Told You So” to the league, blaming the increase in injuries on the shortest off-season ever, which has been followed by a compressed schedule for the 2020-21 campaign.

At the time, one of Belangel’s teammate was Kai Sotto, making this a winning reunion of sorts for the former Ateneo high-schoolers.

At the end of the Blue Eagles’ Season 82 campaign, Belangel, who considers 3-time UAAP champion teammate Matt Nieto a mentor, had a modest answer when asked about his ability to come through in the clutch.

o those who have followed Ateneo basketball the past few years, SJ Belangel’s game-winning basket for the Philippines men’s national basketball team that sunk South Korea on Wednesday should not have come as a surprise.

The third-year Blue Eagles point guard delivered the death blow in Gilas’ initial game of the Clark leg of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 qualifiers, his 3-pointer at the buzzer giving the hosts an 81-78 victory over their vaunted basketball rivals.

Belangel may all be just 21 years old, but he has been playing with a cold-blooded poise for years now that’s not even in the character of more veteran players.

ilas PIlipinas booked a place in the FIBA Asia Cup after beating South Korea, 81-78, in the third window of the qualifying phase at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center on Wednesday night.

SJ Belangel won it for Gilas as he scored on a buzzer-beating fallaway three-pointer against the outstretched arms of Lee Seoung-Hyun.

The game-winner capped Gilas’ comeback from 17 points down in the second quarter.

Belangel’s clutch moment also canceled Lee Hyun-Jung’s own shot from beyond the arc that tied the game at 78-all with 2.9 seconds left, which was set up after Ange Kouame missed what would have been the dagger bonus free throw off Lee’s foul.

Dwight Ramos led Gilas, which beat South Korea for the first time since the 2013 FIBA Asia Cup semifinals in Pasay, with 16 points, five rebounds, two steals,

and one block.

Belangel added 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists as the Philippine side remained unbeaten after four games.

Ange Kouame had 12 points, six rebounds, one assist, and one block, while Kai Sotto made 11 markers, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal in their much-anticipated debut in Gilas’ senior team.

Ricardo Ratliffe put up 24 points, 15 rebounds, and two assists for South Korea, which lost for the first time in the ACQ after a 2-0 start during the first window last year.
