This is the second time that Dabawenyos celebrated “Araw” virtually - without the usual festivities and gatherings that have been accustomed to in the past all because of the community quarantine measures due to Covid-19.

"A lot has happened in the span of a year; we are not the same city we were in 2020, and the threat of Covid-19 is still present, but as resilient and united Dabawenyos, we shall overcome, as we always

have, in the face of adversity," said Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio declared in a statement.

The lady mayor enjoined Dabawenyos once again to celebrate "Araw" safely within the comforts and safety of their homes.

"And let us remember that while Araw ng Dabaw has always been a joyous celebration of pomp and pageantry, it is, at its core, a celebration of and a salute to the Dabawenyos," she said.

So the city government prepared a number of online presentations that showed off the best of Davao.

The virtual events were "Tilaw Dabaw", "Hugyaw Dabaw,"

"Obra Dabaw," and "Istilo Dabaw."

“Istilo Dabaw,” was a fashion show lockdown-style.

The celebration would not be complete without this cultural fashion show.

This year, local fashion designers Windel Mira, Benjie Panizales, Edgar Buyan, Kenny Ladaga, Steffy de Mylo, Nino Franco, Dodjie Batu, and Maizy Colleen used the social distancing rule by bringing the fashion show “Istilo Dabaw” to the streets, lockdown style.

Pulong, a true servant for Dabawenyos

avao City 1st District Representative Paolo “Pulong” Z. Duterte wakes up every morning with the priority order of the day is helping his fellow Dabawenyos. He is committed to serve since the day he decided to be a servant of the people, especially the underprivileged, helpless and needy.

Instead of dampening his ardor, this Covid-19 pandemic even inspired him

more to extend his help as he believes that assisting Dabawenyos is essential amid the crisis and vows to be there for them especially when residents were advised to stay home to slow the virus’ spread and were grappling with how to be there for each other when they can’t even be near each other.

His office continues to offer assistance to those most affected by the pandemic. In fact, it welcomed 2021 by giving aid to the marginalized and displaced workers due to the impacts of the global health crisis.

Uplifting the displaced workers When people are stripped of their work, they suffer losses not just of income but also of dignity, meaning, and hope.

Rep. Duterte does not want his fellow Dabawenyos to suffer.

In partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Social Wel-

fare and Development (DSWD) and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), his office continued the caravan starting last year for beneficiaries, especially those who have not yet received assistance.

Among the beneficiaries who received cash aid, following the ongoing caravan of the First Congressional District Office were referees, coaches, terminal vendors, gasoline attendants, KTV workers, janitorial staff, drivers, and residents of the first district.

Danny Tabanao, 38, a gasoline attendant, said his family is having a hard time adjusting to the new normal since the pandemic. He added that his income significantly decreased which made it hard for him to provide for his family.

Redina Beronilla, 42, a bar and restaurant attendant, said that the bar and restaurant she was working at has temporarily ceased its operation. She added that there is no information yet as to when it will reopen.

“To be honest, pait gyud. I have three young children to raise. The bar and restaurant has been closed since last year, and because of that I took some side jobs – none of them are permanent, but I have to earn for my children,” Beronilla said.

Help for the musicians, blind masseurs, hotel staffs The Covid-19 pandemic has devastated musicians, blind masseurs and many hotel staff’s ability to earn a living.

Rep. Duterte’s office ensured that relief reached to them.

A total of 785 marginalized and displaced workers composed of blind masseurs, musicians, and former employees of hotels, restaurants, and bars in the first district received P6,000 each from their 15-day work through the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) cash assistance from the Office of the First District last December 2, 2020.

Local musician group Samahan ng mga Musikero sa Davao Inc. (Samadhi) officer Fely Encinares could not hide her joy upon receiving the cash assistance as musicians have to stop their engagements and search for other source of income during the community quarantine.

Aside from the blind masseurs, musicians, and former hotel, restaurant and bar staffs, over 23,000 marginalized and displaced workers were provided with the same assistance and 3,000 beneficiaries also received livelihood assistance from the First District Office in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

hen coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hit Davao City last year, everyone was caught by surprise. After all, they were not expecting it would happen, but it did.

What followed was the imposition of health protocols: frequent washing of hands with soap and water or alcohol, physical distancing of one meter apart, and wearing face mask and face shield. The most excruciating part of the

restrictionwas staying at home and the 14-day quarantine for those who were infected with the SARSCoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 as it is a distant cousin of the virus that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

Now, with the availability of several brands of COVID-19 vaccines, people can have a fresher breath.

Travel is being eased in some parts of the country and pretty soon, people will start going to places they visit where they could relax and have some fun.

Foreigners and locals should now plan if they want to experience a trip worth remembering. Why go far when you can have it all in one city? From extreme adventures of mountain climbing and deep-sea diving to just walking over white sand beaches or having fun at night, Davao City has it. If you have only a few days in Davao, the first place to visit is the Philippine Eagle Center – home to the country’s bird icon – in Malagos, Calinan District.

Leave your hotel early in the morning as the travel time is about one hour from the city to the center.

Once you enter the eagle center, don’t be surprised if you find yourself

in the midst of a forest.

“This sanctuary stimulates the tropical rainforest habitat where we breed eagles in captivity,” explains Dennis Salvador, the executive director of Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc. About two kilometers away from the eagle center is the Malagos Garden Resort. Here, you will marvel at the arrangement of flowers and ornamentals – in various forms and hues – scattered throughout the resort. Sculptures, done by national artist Napoleon Abueva, are displayed all over the place. A bonus: don’t miss visiting the Chocolate Museum.

LIFE IS HERE -IN DAVAO CITY!

rom being tagged as “Murder City,” Davao City became “one of the most livable cities in the Asia” (both sobriquets were bestowed by the defunct Asiaweek magazine). Indeed, the city has gone a long, long way. Today, the city is one of the country’s top tourist destinations.

The de facto capital of Mindanao, Davao is one of the largest cities in the world with a total land area of 2,443.61 square kilometers. Its boundaries encompass commercial areas as well as beaches, mountains, and forests. Approximately, it is 7.8 times the size of Cebu and three times that of the entire Metro Manila.

Situated beside Davao Gulf, the city is dominated by the country’s highest peak, the 2,954-meter-high Mount Apo. The inactive volcano is home to tribes such as Bagobo, Manobo, Mandaya and B’laan, and its fertile rolling foothills are teeming with exotic fruits and beautiful flowers.

Credited for transforming Davao City from a “chaos urban” to a “livable city” is no less than Rodrigo R. Duterte, the current President of the Philippines. After all, he was mayor of the city for almost two decades.

“His fight for a better Philippines,” replied Klaus Doring, a German who now lives in Davao City, when asked what he likes most

about Duterte.

Klaus knows what he is talking about. He first came to the Philippines in 1976. He now lives in Davao City together with his Filipina wife, Rossana Balcom, since 1999.

“When my plane was leaving Manila in 1976, I encountered some mixed emotions,” he said. “Maybe my time then was too short…”

Since 1987, he has visited the Philippines on a regular annual basis because his wife is a Filipina.

“I met her during my first visit in Davao City in 1982,” Klaus recalled.

He pursued her until she finally agreed to marry him.

Klaus didn’t only catch the apple of his eyes, he also fell in love with the city, which was not chaotic with traffic then and high-rise buildings were still scarce. “I think I was one of the few foreigners staying here,” he said. “Today, Davao has changed a lot and is now one of the most progressive cities in the Philippines.”

Klaus is not the only foreigner who loves Davao City. “For me, I like Davao because it’s a place I grew to know over time,” said Jonathan Watson, an American. “Throughout my life, growing up, I have moved around and have lived on 13 different streets in five different cities/ towns within two different countries. Davao is one of the five that I’ve lived and the second longest.”

He considered Davao City as the number one that contains “the most connections that I have, as well as experiences, and knowledge of the area.” There was one town where he lived the longest in his childhood, but he lacked the friends, experiences, and understanding of the place” when compared to Davao.

“In short, Davao is my comfort zone,” Jonathan admitted. “It’s what I know and call home.”

Then, there’s Ulrich Kronberg, another German national. “Davao is the center of my life and gives me a balance,” he said. “My kids feel at home, too. We are close to the sea and it’s not far from the mountains.”

Steve Hyde is an American who grew up in the Philippines where his parents were missionaries.

Now, he is working in Cambodia with his family. But he still can’t forget Davao. “There are plenty of nicer and more trendy places, but Davao’s smell, sites and sounds remind me of home.”

People who have visited Davao have fond memories about the country’s biggest city. “Visiting Davao’s 911, whew, I really admired the command center and all,” said Larry Madarang, a journalist.

Durian is a very popular fruit in the city. There are people who hate it but there are those who love it.

One of those who love the controversial fruit is Jonathan L. Mayuga, a journalist who writes for a national daily. When he visits Davao, he always finds time to eat durian.

Davao City is the third-most populous city in the country – after Quezon City and Manila. As of 2020, the city is home to 1,825,450.

In its logo, the tagline “Davao Life is Here” figures prominently.

“The logo symbolizes the five icons of Davao: the regal Philippine eagle; the majestic Mount Apo; the 11 Ethno-linguistic tribes; the King of fruits, durian; and the beautiful Queen of Philippine flowers, waling-waling,” explained the city’s website, davaocity.gov.ph. “All are

dge Davao has what other community papers in Davao most don’t have. Its acronym speaks for itself:

E is for Enthralment, a word which is defined as “the state of being fascinated.” That’s what Edge Davao is trying to do, when it was launched 13 years ago. It wants to keep its readers completely interested.

There were already several local papers available in the city but an addition of another one was welcome – although without fanfare. Little by little, it started to catch the attention of readers with its finely crafted reports, fresh layout and catchy photographs.

Before long, politicians, businessmen, academicians, doctors, sports aficionados, teachers, stu-

dents and even the ordinary people were already reading the paper from page one up to the last page, or from cover to cover, so to speak. They are now looking forward to a new copy each day.

D is for Daily. In the beginning, Edge Davao was published as a weekly paper covering mainly business. That was the intention of the people behind it: Editor-in-Chief Antonio M. Ajero and General Manager Olivia D. Velasco.

But after two years, they decided to publish it on a daily basis. After all, news happens all the time: every second, every minute, every hour, every day. Now, it is

G is for Gorgeous. People use this word to describe jaw-droppingly beautiful, magnificent people or things. Good-looking is one thing. Beautiful is another.

But reserve gorgeous for the kind of looks that take your breath away. That’s what Edge Davao is all about: the layout, the photographs, the features and news reports. Even the ads are a class in themselves.

E is for Exceptional. When you use the word “exceptional” to describe someone or something, it means the person or the thing has a particular quality, usually a good quality, to an unusually high degree. That’s what Edge Davao is aiming for in its every issue. It selects features, news reports, and photographs judiciously.

Even the editorials are thought-provoking and begs to disagree in a manner that people may agree. A picture speaks a thousand words; that’s why it publishes photos that don’t only take your attention but a second look.

D is for Davao. People who hear Davao may only think of Davao City but unknowingly it also means the region of Southern Mindanao. There are actually five provinces named Davao: Del Sur, Del Norte, Oriental, Occidental and De Oro. Davao, the Hispanicized pronunciation of daba-daba – the Bagobo word for “fire” – encloses the Davao Gulf. Its regional center is of course Davao City (although a chartered city, it is part of Davao del Sur).

V is for Victory. Bear Bryant once said: “If you believe in

yourself and have dedication and pride – and never quit, you’ll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards.”

Edge Davao was among the community papers that reported even before day one when then Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte ran for presidency. He was a dark horse among the presidentiables but he managed to top them all after the election. He was the man who turned Davao City from being known as “murder city” to one of the most peaceful cities in the country.

Edge Davao was also covering other politicians like Sara Duterte-Carpio, Lawrence Christopher “Bong” Go, and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, the last two are newly-elected senators of the Philippines. Worth mentioning also are the victories of Davao in terms of business and economics and historical records.

A is for Achievement. Scientist Albert Einstein said it well: “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”

Edge Davao has done that since it was launched. Now, it is in its 13th year and there’s no stopping it – even in the midst of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. While some papers have closed already, it has maintained its presence.

And that’s already an achievement.

Despite being a newcomer, it

is now one of the most respected papers in the city.

O is for Outstanding People from the region. Let’s start with politics: Rodrigo R. Duterte, the 16th president of the Philippines; Sara Duterte, the first woman mayor of Davao; Prospero Nograles, Speaker of the House of the Representatives, the first produced from Mindanao, and two current members of the Senate: Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go and Ronald “Bat” Dela Rosa.

From entertainment, we have the following: actresses Sharmaine Arnaiz, Erich Gonzales, Bangs Garcia, Juliana Palermo, Iwa Moto, and Mimi Miyagi; actors and hosts Ruben Gonzaga and Ryan Ramos; singers Thor Dulay, Juris Fernandez, Jay Durias, KZ Tandingan, Maris Rascal, and Krissel Valdez.

The media personalities made a name for themselves in Manila: Jay Sonza, Alex Santos, Aljo Bendijo, Stanley Palisada, and the Tulfo Brothers (Ben, Erwin, Raffy and Ramon). In fashion, design and arts, the following names come to mind: national artist Ang Kiukok, film director Yam Laranas, and surrealist painter, poet, and philosopher Danny Sillada.

“It’s nice to be part of the first online ‘Istilo Dabaw’ because it’s not something that we usually do, despite the restrictions and the limited resources we were able to come up with a new concept on how to exhibit our creations in time of the pandemic,” said Limon.

Limon exhibited a collection that revolves around the artistry of the ethno linguistic groups in Mindanao (Bagobo Tagabawa, Mandaya and Tboli) inspired by the patterns and silhouettes through their dreams, displaying figures from nature and mythologies.

He incorporated them on ready-to-wear pieces that are trendy and relatable to the market.

Art show in the time of pandemic In Davao City, art is everywhere: public parks, mall installations, and streets. Each art tells the cultural and traditional vibrancy of the city.

"Obra Dabaw" unveiled masterpieces of new and established artists namely Ann Pamintuan, Brando Cedeño, Carmaela Alcantara, Mark Tolentino, Kay Fanlo, Vic Secuya, Maricris Floreindo- Brias, Gabb Sol Cruz, Dadai Joaquin, Lito Pepito, Imelda Pangan, Bryan Cabrera, Josie Tionko, and Kublai Millan.

The featured pieces were found to be inspiring and healing among Dabawenyos stressed by the restrictive protocols of pandemic.

"My art is basically abstract, although, I've been through realism when I was younger. I started with my craft when I was 16 and even at that time I knew I am going to be an abstract artist. Davao City wherever you are is a good place to be an artist because of the quality of life," said Victor Secuya.

A self- taught visual artist focusesing on abstract expressonism, Secuya’s works on canvass have been featured in many solo and group exhibitions.

Lito Pepito is one of the renowned visual artists in Davao City who has made name in the local arts scene.

He is a self-taught artist who passionately advocates art appreciation among Dabawenyos. His works focus on the wealth of 11 tribes of Davao City highlighting the Lumad cultures, instruments, tradition, heritage, rituals, and food.

Water Lily was Pepito’s first favorite subject when he arrived in Davao City.

“Naa man mga water Lily dinha sa Davao City High School, ako ng silipon

sa koral unya akong kuhaan ug litrato unya akong ipinta. Mao na akong ganahan water lily kay very colorful,” he said.

His water lily piece was noticed by Briccio Santos, son of former Davao City Mayor Luis Santos.

“Nagkataon na nagpunta si Briccio Santos at nakita niya ang painting ko na water lily. Tinanong niya kung magkano yan?

Ingon ko meron pa sa bahay, pero actually wala.

Pepito has mounted exhibitions in the past several years. He is hopeful that his artworks would help for the development of art and culture in Davao City.

Finished products, lower costs Festivals have become part of Davao City’s cultural fabric as well as a tourism and leisure pursuits that are participated in by many Dabawenyos as artists, connoisseurs and curious kibitzers.

In-person events may be on hold until further notice, but the pandemic couldn’t dampen the resilient spirit of Dabawenyos.

Didn’t Mayor Sara say that it is the Dabawenyo’s grit, tenacity, and discipline that will see them through to the end of this pandemic, in the hopes that they may one day safely celebrate “Araw ng Dabaw” in the streets once more?

Just as with in-person events, the virtual celebration of this year’s “Araw” may be simple focusing just on presentations, however, if offered immersive and interactive engagement not only among Dabawenyos but for people around the world as well.

“Maka-happy because all of the events at the time of showing garnered more than 10,000 views and is continually being viewed and shared. It’s also another way of promoting our city, that despite the pandemic, we are able to show the best of Davao City,” said Generose Tecson, City Tourism Operation’s officer.

Tecson said it is an advantage to hold the festivity online because what were presented were already finished product.

“So all you have to do is wait if the audience will like it. Costs are lower too.

Now, let’s do the tour in the heart of the city. Start at the city hall along San Pedro Street. A few meters away is the Sangguniang Panlungsod (legislative building), whose façade has the famous peace and

unity statue designed by Kublai Millan, Davao City’s top scupltor and Datu Bago Awardee. Across the statue is the historic San Pedro Cathedral.

Just a walk away, don’t miss the D’Bone Collector Museum (shades of one of those Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C.) in barangay Bucana. You will be mesmerized to see a 41-foot or 12.4-meter-long sperm whale (which is the largest species of toothed whale). Bones and skeletons of snakes, tarsier, marine turtles, various fish species, different sizes of the mouths of sharks, and birds abound.

“Each group that goes to the museum gets a tour about the animals found in each of the displays. One of the things we show to them is how some of the animals have died due to humans throwing garbage into the ocean or canals and how these kill the whales and dolphins,” explains Darrel Blatchley, the museum’s curator and owner.

From there, take a taxi and tell the driver to bring you to People’s Park (yes, it's Davao’s counterpart of Manhattan’s Central Park) in Legazpi Street. It’s a place where people gather around, stroll and cross bridges, watch man-made waterfalls, or sit under the beautiful trees.

The city is one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of mango, pomelo, banana, papaya, and mangosteen. Its fertile volcanic soil makes it most suitable for sustained production of these tastiest tropical fruits in the country. Don’t miss eating the exotic durian, famous because of its spike and offensive scent (“It smells like hell, but tastes like heaven,” one scribe noted).

Wikipedia reports Davao City has 10 sister cities, namely: Bacoor, Baguio, Bayugan, Cabanatuan, Cebu City, Cotabato City, Legazpi City, Manila, Marikina, Quezon City, San Juan City, and Zamboanga City.

Davao City’s sister cities internationally, according to Wikipedia, are: Jinjiang, Fujian and Nanning (China), Manado and Pekanbaru (Indonesia), Kitakyushu (Japan), Koror (Palau), Montevideo (Uruguay), Panama City (Panama), Vladivostok (Russia), Keelung (Taiwan), and Kauai County, Hawaii and Tacoma, Washington (United States).

Its colorful history started on June 29, 1848 when the Spanish founded Davao in the Davao Gulf.

During the period of the Americans, Davao grew and became more progressive.

On March 16, 1936, Assemblyman Romualdo C. Quimpo filed Bill 609 wanting to create the city from the town of Davao and the municipal district of Guianga. Seven months later, on October 16, President Man-

uel L. Quezon signed Commonwealth Act No. 51, an act creating the Chartered City of Davao.

Since then, Araw ng Dabaw – a city-wide celebration for the anniversary of the city – was celebrated every March 16. “Araw ng Davao is marked by a series of events across the metropolitan area when the citizens celebrate the birthday of this multicultural city,” the website officeholidays.com stated. “The festivities cover a jam-packed, seven-day schedule of trade fairs and cultural presentations.

There is also a colorful civic-military parade and citywide beauty pageants.”

But during the recent celebrations, these events did not happen. Last year, Mayor Sara Duterte cancelled the anniversary that generally draws at least 200,000 domestic and foreign visitors, as precaution against the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

“It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to cancel the events of the 83rd Araw ng Dabaw celebration,” Duterte said during a press conference that was held at her city hall office.

This year, the celebration was again cancelled.

In a message that was posted in a social media

account, Duterte said, “This year is the second time we are celebrating the Araw ng Dabaw virtually – without the usual festivities and gatherings we have been accustomed to in the past.

“A lot has happened in the span of a year. We are not the same city we were in 2020, and the threat of COVID-19 is still present but… we shall overcome, as we always have, (this) adversity.”

But instead of celebrating Araw ng Dabaw on March 16, it was moved to March 1. The reason for this: the city was originally founded on March 1, 1937, according to Councilor J. Melchor Quitain, Jr. In fact, if you happen to look at the landmark in city hall, you will find that the date is indeed March 1.

On August 22, 2019, President Duterte signed Republic Act No. 11379, called “An Act Declaring March 1 of Every Year a Special Working Holiday in the City of Davao, Province of Davao del Sur, to be Known as ‘Araw ng Dabaw,’” Repealing for the purpose Republic Acts No. 7441 and 7685.

With the availability of vaccines, many Dabawenyos are hoping that next year a more elaborate celebration will happen.

Government’s partner in helping the marginalized workers They say that two heads are better than one and for Rep. Duterte this means to be able to help more people.

The Office of the First Congressional District in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) distributed cash assistance to 1, 210 marginalized workers from the first district affected by Covid-19.

The registered beneficiaries, who are residents of the 54 barangays under the 1st District, received P3,960 cash assistance each based on the prevailing highest minimum wage in Davao Region as per DOLE. These workers were among the thousand regular beneficiaries who received cash aid from the government’s TUPAD aiming to mitigate the impacts of the pandemic.

They were also assigned with different chores under the 10-day work program.

Covid-19 does not stop Pulong’s anti-drug campaign

Not even a pandemic is stopping the Congressman from enforcing President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.

The Office of the First Congressional District in collaboration with other government agencies conducted an anti-drug campaign caravan and provided cash assistance to the beneficiaries last year.

Aside from giving cash aid, he also encouraged the beneficiaries to participate in the anti-drug campaign of the government.

Tirelessly working As the pandemic grips the city, it does not deter the Congressman from doing his job and tirelessly working to find ways to help the Dabawenyos.

At the same time, he enjoins Dabawenyos in upholding—in the midst of great adversity-- the tradition of celebrating generosity, resiliency, and Bayanihan spirit.

He is optimistic that Dabawenyos will overcome and beat this pandemic by supporting and helping each other.
