Dr. Homer Lim, integrative oncology of Cancerhealerph. com said getting infected with Covid-19 can be prevented following the minimum health protocols and boosting the immune system by taking vitamin C 3000mg per day, vitamin d3 5000iu per day, zinc 50mg per day, Quercetin 500mg per day or EGCG 500mg per day.

Dr. Jose Beltran, president of Davao Medical Society, said supplemental feeding, provision of fresh fruits, vegetables, vitamins to depressed communities may be an option by the government if there are no budgetary constraints to limit the spread of the virus.

“Early interventions include modulating and enhancing the immune system of communities especially those who are financially challenged

and malnourished, the elderly with weaker body defenses, those with comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension, cancer, renal failure and others. Proper nutrition and healthy lifestyles should be top priority,” he said in an email interview.

Beltran added that the entry of virus into humans is usually through oral and nasal passages or even through eyes that is why individuals need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) like masks, suits, gloves, caps, etc. to protect themselves from contamination or prevent transmission of viral particles to others.

He also said social distancing is a must.

“I am not an expert on Covid-19 or infectious diseases. The way I see it the cases are rising its either more people are getting infected or

more screening tests are available or both,” he said.

Beltran also said what’s frustrating is the city’s laws and ordinances are not strictly implemented.

“Everybody wears masks but with noses exposed, face shields worn like headbands, no social distancing, nobody apprehends these violators.

Lim said CDCph and majority of the Filipinos feel the sincerity of the government in trying to solve this crisis. Beltran said the government are just implementing guidelines set by regulatory agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO) and if measures are inadequate, these may be attributable to logistics.

“Bear in mind that we don’t have the financial capability to perform mass testing, provide adequate quarantine facilities, staff, medicines and the like,” he said.

“Our cases in NCR is declining which is very good, however, in the provinces especially Davao, Cebu, and Calabarzon are quite worrisome and really need active intervention,” Lim said.

At a hearing last week by the House Committee on People’s Participation, DOH Bureau of International Health Cooperation’s Dr. Aleli Annie Sudiacal said that while the goal is to have every Filipino inoculated, the first part of the program proposes to cover only some 24.7 million Filipinos.

They are the ones covered in the top 5 priority groups.

In her presentation to lawmakers, Sudiacal said the country’s 1,762,994 frontline health workers are the first priority for the coronavirus vaccine, once available.

These include: private and public health workers working in treatment and rehabilitation centers, COVID-19 treatment and monitoring facilities, hospitals (612,975) other public health workers, like those in rural, city and provincial health offices, those on the field, and local government contact tracers (602,982) barangay health workers including BHERTS (414,640) other frontline workers in other national government agencies, like DSWD, DepEd, DILG, BJMP and Bureau of Corrections (132,397) Indigent senior citizens, numbering 3,789,874, are prioritized second. Sudiacal described this population as one of the most vulnerable.

Senior citizens not under the indigent category, numbering 5,678,544, make up the third priority group for the vaccine.

The 12,911,193 remaining members of the indigent population are the fourth in the priority eligible groups.

Comprising the fifth priority group are the government’s 525,523 uniformed personnel, including from the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit.

“We are very cognizant of the fact that yun dami ng ating mababakunahan ay dependent din po on the supply.

health department also showed that teachers and school workers in the public and private sectors are 6th in the priority list; followed by the following: - 7th: all remaining government workers - 8th: “essential workers” in agriculture, the food industry, transportation and tourism - 9th: sociodemographic groups in significantly higher risk areas other than the senior citizens and indigent population (persons deprived of liberty, persons with disabilities, and Filipinos living in high-density areas) - 10th: overseas Filipino workers - 11th: other remaining workforce - 12th: students “So ‘yong ating teachers, school workers, all government workers, essential workers and those in the socio demographic groups at higher risk po, PWD, other remaining work force then students… I hope people will not misconstrue that they are not priority,” Sudiacal explained.

“Because we do know yet the vaccines that will be coming out, the vaccines that will be approved by our regularity process, yun pong ating priority population may still vary a little,” she added.

Sudiacal said the primary objectives of the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan being finalized by the DOH, which identified the population priority list for the phased implementation program of the immunization program, are to directly reduce morbidity and mortality, and maintain the operations of most essential and critical services.

“Our secondary goal with this plan is to substantially control transmission, and minimize disruption of social and economic functions,” she added.

On Wednesday, Sec. Carlito Galvez Jr., chief implementer of the National Task Force Against COVID-19 and the country’s vaccine czar, said 35 million Filipinos are on the priority list, although he did not provide a breakdown.

He also said it may take up to 5 years to finish the government’s vaccination drive against the novel coronavirus.

The country is eyeing COVID-19 vaccine supplies from 5 to 6 countries and hopes to “unlock” the funds for this by next month, he said.

Last week, Duterte approved advance payment to private vaccine developers to ensure that the Philippines would get a supply of the drug.

He is also set to authorize emergency use of COVID-19 vaccines, according to Malacañang.

he strict community quarantine restrictions in Davao City will likely be extended beyond November considering the continued surge in infections, according to the city’s COVID-19 task force focal person.

Dr. Ashley Lopez said that while data over the past two weeks showed some improvements, he still expects the city’s high number of cases to persist for a bit longer.

“Ang forecast po namin, with all the things that we are doing right now, tatagal pa po kasi ito ng mga 1 or 1.5 months, so I don’t think...I’m not expecting the GCQ (general community quarantine) will be lifted very soon,” he said on Wednesday.

The GCQ status in Davao City, which President Rodrigo Duterte imposed last week to help curb the spread of the virus, is scheduled to last until Nov. 30. Lopez said that the effects of tightening lockdown rules will begin

to be noticeable at least two weeks later.

According to Lopez, the spike in cases is due to local transmission which he attributed to the reopening of the economy, as Davao City steadily de-escalated to a more lenient modified GCQ over the past months.

To reverse this trend, the local government has reimposed preventive measures such as tightening border controls, restricting movement within the area, and bringing back curfew and the 24-hour liquor ban. Lopez added that authorities are ramping up efforts to test, trace, treat, and isolate, as well as to educate residents on COVID-19.

The Department of Health’s latest daily report showed the city topped the list of localities nationwide in terms of new cases at 137.

Indonesian embassy reboots Davao-Manado connectivity

ndonesian embassy officials rebooted the Davao-Manado connectivity in a bid to boost trade and investment.

In a webinar entitled “Enhancing Manado-Davao City Connectivity for Sustainable Economic Interaction and Mutually Beneficial for the Two Countries” last November 9, 2020, the embassy officials of Indonesia recommended for the creation of connectivity forum that involves all stakeholders and the forum is expected to have regularly

scheduled meetings, provide action plans and recommendations for implementation times to realize increased trade through connectivity of the Davao City-Manado route via air or sea.

Indonesia Consul General in Davao City Dicky Fabrian said the air connectivity will offer easier access for Filipinos to visit North Sulawesi

and various Indonesia destinations and vice versa.

“It will give more interactions of people from both countries in business sectors, academe, students, sports etc. that could boost trade, investment, tourism, and socio-cultural activities,” Fabrian said in an email interview.

The last time this route was available was in May 2007 and was revived last year expecting to further boost investment and tourism activities between Mindanao and North Sulawesi, Indone-

sia. The Davao-Manado route is being serviced by the Indonesian Carrier Garuda Indonesia, was offering direct and easy travel to attract investment exploration, tourist visits between the two areas.

Fabrian said due to the pandemic and travel restrictions in both countries, Garuda Indonesia couldn’t serve the Davao – Manado route since last March.

“We hope after the pandemic, airlines from both countries could continue to serve the route,” he said.

Davao City gets 16 ambulance units from DOH

he Davao City government has received 16 ambulance units from the Department of Health (DOH) under its health facilities enhancement program. City Health Officer Dr. Josephine Villafuerte said the new units, which costs P2.3 million each, will be deployed to the city government’s health centers and clustered barangays in the second and third districts for emergency use and transport of patients.

“This is going to be a great help to the people of the barangay since they don’t have to wait for an ambulance to go up to the periphery. Pwede na sila ang magdala sa ilang mga pasyente ug magrefer diri sa atong mga hospitals or to the nearest

facility (they can bring their patients and refer to our hospitals or the nearest facility), because they already have an active disaster response team,” Villafuerte said.

DOH undersecretary Dr. Abdullah B. Dumama Jr. who led the handover of the vehicles, said that the DoH also donated ambulances to other areas for better access to health care services.

He said a total of 33 ambulances were donated to the Davao Region.

In her message delivered via Zoom, Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte thanked DoH and emphasized the importance of the new ambulances in delivering medical assistance to more Dabawenyos.

“The present health

emergency has highlighted the need for governments to provide the public with better access to health care services, and given the expansive land area of Davao City – with 182 barangays, these emergency vehicles will definitely enable our barangay officials and the personnel from the district health offices to reach more individuals in need of emergency medical services,” she said.

“More ambulances mean that we can provide healthcare assistance to more Dabawenyos. And with this enhancement in health service delivery, we can contribute to the Philippine health agenda of attaining better health outcomes for all Filipinos,” Mayor Sara added.

Football legend Diego Maradona passes away at 60

ootball legend Diego Armando Maradona died Wednesday, suffering cardiac arrest at home in Tigre, Argentina. He was 60.

The Argentine football legend underwent successful surgery on November 4 for a blood clot in his brain, his doctor Leopoldo Luque said.

Maradona was awake and doing well but had "a little drainage" that doctors were planning to remove the following day.

"He tolerated the surgery very well, he is lucid and awake and the time he stays in the hospital will depend on his evolution," Luque added.

A subdural hematoma, where a blood clot is formed on the surface of the brain, is usually caused by a head injury, but the former football superstar did not remember any event that could have caused it.

The Argentine Football Association paid tribute to Maradona, saying he would forever be a hero of the nation's football.

"The Argentine Football Association, through its president Claudio Tapia, expresses its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend, Diego Armando Maradona,” it said on its website.

"Maradona was, is and will forever be a hero of our football. An emblem that knew how to bring the colors of the Ar-

gentine flag to every corner of the planet. Diego forever marked an era with his indescribable and unsurpassed talent. The soccer planet will remember you forever."

Sports world pays tribute to legend Football clubs offered condolences via Twitter on hearing about Maradona's passing.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino expressed his deepest sorrow on the death of Maradona.

"Today is an unbelievably sad day. Our Diego left us. Our hearts – of all of us who loved him for how he was, and for what he represented – have stopped beating for a moment. Rest in peace, dear Diego. We love you," Infantino said on FIFA.com.

"The world awaits our words but there are no words to describe the pain we're going through. Now is the time to grieve," Napoli said.

"Your memory will live on forever... Rest in Peace Maradona," said Galatasaray.

Fenerbahce said, “One of the all-time greats... Rest in Peace, Diego Armando Maradona.”

“We are deeply sorry to hear of the passing of Diego Maradona, one of the greatest to have ever played the beautiful game. Rest in peace, legend,” Besiktas said.
