resident Rodrigo Duterte on Monday night said he will continue to “go after government officials and workers who are into graft and corruption,” saying around 800 officials and workers have been dismissed from the service due to illegal activities.

The President named some of them, including Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) employees who allegedly pocketed tax collections and requested money in exchange for permit approvals.

Duterte said the sacked officials and workers faced administrative cases.

The Office of the Ombudsman is tasked to investigate and prosecute Philippine government officials accused of crimes, especially involving graft and corruption.

Duterte said he will identify more people allegedly involved in lawless activities next week.

Late last month, the President directed the Department of Justice to investigate the “entire government” for

corruption.

Duterte issued a memorandum directing the DOJ to look into anomalies at state agencies until the end of his term in 2022. The memo gave the department the power to decide what allegations to investigate and to work with other agencies.

NO AUTHORITY OVER CONGRESSMEN The President also bared a list from the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) containing names of congressmen allegedly asking for commissions over government projects.

However, he refused to name these legislators in public, and will instead forward the list to the Ombudsman, citing jurisdiction issues.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the DOJ will investigate legislators’ participation in questionable transactions, if warranted, and name them.

he Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board 11 (LTFRB 11) shared on its Facebook page, that it received numerous reports concerning the non-compliance of the public utility vehicle (PUV) operators and drivers, who are persistently spreading conspiracy theories and myths and debunking the existence and threat of Covid-19 to passengers.

Some taxi drivers and operators were reported by commuters for not following the health protocols and that some drivers even told passengers to take off their face shields inside the taxi as Covid-19 is not true as not even one of the drivers and operators get sick with the virus.

Because of these reports, the LTFB 11 reminded PUV operators and drivers, as well as the riding public, to follow the Seven Commandments to Revitalize the Country Safely (strict health protocols for public transportation): wearing of proper face masks, wearing of face shields, no talking and no eating (inside

PUV), adequate ventilation, frequent and proper disinfection, no symptomatic passengers, and appropriate physical distancing.

Davao Region ARBOs forge partnership for Supplementary Feeding Program

outhern Mindanao Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SDMC) started initial talks with Biao Agrarian Reform Cooperative (BARBCO) for the Enhanced Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (EPAHP) Supplementary Feeding Program of the DSWD. The partnership aims to provide packed champorado utilizing SDMC-produced tablea to the 52 Day Care children of the municipality of Sta. Maria, province of Davao Occidental.

In a MOA signing between the two organizations last 17 November 2020, it was stipulated that SDMC will supply quality cacao beans to BARBCO. The latter as the anchor organization in the partnership, will provide technical and marketing assistance in cacao production and DTI for the business development services, processing equipment/ facilities, among others. BARBCO is a Davao City-based cooperative, primarily engaged in cocoa production, marketing, cocoa liquor & chocolate production.

The EPAHP was formed after the success of the Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (PAHP) program of the DAR, DSWD and DA in 2016, originally aimed at helping farmers’ livelihood and the production of staples needed for the Supplementary Feeding Pro-

gram for Residential Care Facilities.

The enhanced features of the EPAHP include: credit assistance to support food production and processing, steady markets to community-based organizations and support services from partner agencies in the region.

EPAHP is tied to the government’s Sustainable Development Goals, Ambisyon Natin 2040, Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022, Masustansiyang Pagkain para sa Batang Pilipino Act, Kalusugan At Nutrisyon Ng Mag-Nanay Act, Sagip Saka Act and other directives of President Rodrigo Duterte intended to reduce poverty incidence to below 14% at the end of his term.

Dominguez said the 60 million target vaccinations can help the country achieve “herd im-

munity” against COVID-19.

Health Sec. Francisco Duque III said at least 60 percent of the population needs to be inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines for herd immunity to take place.

“Ang herd immunity is anywhere from 60-70 percent [of the population] according to the Word Health Organization (WHO),” Duque said.

On its website, the WHO defines ‘herd immunity’ as ‘population immunity’, where “a population can be protected from a certain virus if a threshold of vaccination is reached.”

Davao City extends P7.5-M aid to typhoon-hit areas

T

he Davao City government will extend financial help to areas devastated by Typhoon Rolly in Luzon.

During the 19th City Council’s Special Session on 06 November, local lawmakers has authorized Mayor Sara Duterte to utilize a portion of the Davao City Government’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management Fund (Calamity Fund) for Calendar Year 2020, in the amount of P7.5 million

pesos, as financial assistance to LGUs which were declared under a State of Calamity.

The P7.5 million will be divided among seven (7) provinces and one city hit by Typhoon Quinta and Rolly, namely, Province of Oriental Mindoro, Batangas, Albay, Camarines Sur, Marinduque, Cavite and Catanduanes, and Batangas City.

Alfredo Baloran, the chief of the Davao City Di-

saster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), said the city will extend 1 Million to each of the provinces while P500,000 to Batangas City.

The financial assistance will be taken from the City’s Quick Response Fund (QRF) which is 30 per cent of the 2020 Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (DRRMF) or calamity fund. The city’s calamity fund of five per cent of the annual budget.

RISE UP, SHAPE UP Women coaches lead PSC web series episode 4

T

he Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) underscores the importance of coaches and trainers in the development of a vibrant Philippine sporting community in the fourth episode of their web series “Rise Up, Shape Up”. Airing on November 25, PSC-Women in Sports’ Rise Up, Shape Up features two of the country’s top female coaches to share their coaching experience and journey.

PSC Chairman William Ramirez explains that competent and effective coaches and trainers are of equal importance in nurturing the country’s sport community.

“We believe that the way to an excellent and competitive sporting pool of talents is through strategic and competent coaches,” Ramirez remarks. He also mentioned the PSC’s direction to intensify coaches’ development through the Philippine Sports Institute (PSI). The certification courses are aimed to uphold a national standard of sports coaching to support the preparation for potential globally competitive national athletes.

Commissioner Celia Kiram, oversight commissioner for Women in Sports, adds that attention should also be given to women coaches. “In a primarily male dominated field, it is impressive that we have women coaches who have made landmark contributions to developing athletes. Their dedication and hard work may be on par with other coaches, but their influence is more crucial given the representation they show,” Kiram states. She further explains that the presence of women coaches in the country can certainly impact on and encourage young girls aspiring to join the sporting world.

Rise Up, Shape Up’s fourth webisode is set to showcase the journeys of two coaches of Philippine national teams. Coach Len Escollante is the head coach of the Philippine Canoe-Kayak-Dragon Boat Federation, and a Level 3 international coach and international technical official. She was instrumental to the development of

several world-class paddlers who have started training as young as 9 years old, or even before they were taken to the National Pool.

The team of paddlers under her training has also brought medals to the country in the 30th Southeast Asian Games and other world championships.

Coach Joy Marino guides the national archery team and is also the chair of the Archery Development Committee for the Southeast Asian Archery Federation for 2020-2023. Marino was also a member of the Philippine Archery Team from 1992-2005 and won the SEA Games 2001 Gold Medal for Recurve Women Individual Category. She finished her International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program with honors at the School of Sports Management, University of Delaware.

The episode will also feature self-care tips for coaches and trainers by Dr. Marissa Guinto, associate professor and research director of the University of the Philippines Diliman, and a member of the Women in Sports Commission of the Philippine Olympic Committee. Yoga and meditation teacher trainer and co-founder of White Space Mind and Body Wellness Studio Ms. Eileen Tupaz will be leading a guided meditation practice.
