Corey Wong, associate director of Arup, attested that in the future the proposed bridge will not be the only thing that is bringing the traffic to the area as it is expected that Davao

City and its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will grow, the traffic and the population will grow that will have a strong impact of the traffic situation in the future.

The traffic surveys were done in April 19, 2020.

“When we did our analysis we found that only 10 percent to 15 percent of the traffic on the future road is gonna be from the bridge itself. I’ve been in Davao City six or seven times So I know the traffic in some locations but the Davao City Bypass as well as the coastal road that’s gonna help alleviate some of that traffic that is going to Daang Maharlika,” Wong said.

Wong’s statement was in response to the concern

raised by one Wenifredo Gorrez, a resident of Barangay Hizon, who said during the virtual public hearing last Monday that the bridge will be a major concern among residents in his area, which is among the areas that will be affected by the project in the Davao side.

“Yung gi-present na traffic kasi yan ang isang major concern dito sa amin.

I have live this place for almost 35 years and I can say that the traffic has been getting worse. Can you

imagine I travel from our house to Agdao sometimes would travel that of more than one hour, or from my house going to SM Lanang in the same one hour. Ngayon sinasabi ninyo na okay ang traffic dito, I think the traffic situation would be a very big issue when the time comes no matter what you say,” Gorrez said.

The landing points of the bridge are specifically located in Davao City and IGaCoS, the barangays that will be affected are Vicente Hizon Sr., A. Angliongto and

PH enters top 20 countries with most Covid-19 cases he Philippines has entered the list of 20 countries with the most number of people infected with the novel coronavirus worldwide, according to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center.

Based on the latest count by the Philippine Department of Health (DOH), the country has 314,079 COVID-19 cases as of

Thursday, October 1 — the same number reflected in the Johns Hopkins count — with 254,223 recoveries and 5,562 deaths.

In the Johns Hopkins list, the Philippines overtook Pakistan, which fell to the 21st spot with 312,806 cases. At the 19th spot is Italy with 314,861 cases.

DOH 11 sees cluster cases of Covid-19 in workplaces

By MAYA M. PADILLO ollowing the opening of various business establishments in Davao Region, an official of the regional office of the Department of Health (DOH 11) disclosed that the agency has noticed clustering of Covid-19 cases in various establishments.

DOH 11 Assistant Regional Director Dr. Lenny Joy Rivera announced in a virtual presser on Friday that there are 12 business establishments where there are clustering of Covid-19 cases with a total of 50 cases including 33 active.

“As reported to us may 12 work establishments na may clustering of cases na nangyayari sa loob. A total of 50 number of cases and still undergoing investigation kung saan nag-simula at the same time tinitingan ang health protocols nila sa loob ng opisina,” Rivera said.

Due to this latest clustering of cases, DOH 11

is now coordinating with the regional office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the local government units (LGUs) to ensure that the minimum health protocols are observed.

“We also has a coordination with DOLE in monitoring these establishments na nagbukas na.

resident Rodrigo R. Duterte is “most hopeful” about the potential coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine being developed by China, Malacañang said Thursday.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte prefers a China-made vaccine even as several countries are on a race to be the first to come up with a vaccine against Covid-19.

“The President is most hopeful with China but he has also said that Johnson and Johnson is on track,” Roque said in a virtual Palace briefing.

Citing reports, he said Moderna’s potential vaccine is also showing “very promising results.”

“Mayroon pong latest information on Moderna, mukha daw pong it has very promising results doon sa kaniyangthird phase ng clinical trials (There is latest information on Moderna. It seems like its third phase of clinical trials is showing very promising results),” Roque said.

He said the governments of the Philippines and Russia are also coordinating on the latter’s potential Covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, since clinical trials will take place in both countries.

“Nakikipag-ugnayan pa rin po tayo dahil kinakailangan dumaan pa rin sa (We are also coordinating with the Russian authorities as far as the Russian Sputnik is concerned because it still needs to undergo) third clinical trial both in Russia and in the Philippines,” Roque said.

He also mentioned the potential vaccine being developed in England but

clinical trials were temporarily stopped.

Roque said the global race to develop a Covid-19 vaccine would benefit countries like the Philippines.

“Now alam ninyo naman po kasi ang nature ng pharmaceutical industries, nag-uunahan po iyan, which is good for us.

Nag-uunahan iyan at alam po nila kung sino mauna, sila po iyong kikita nang pinakamalaki (You know the nature of pharmaceutical industries, they’re racing to develop a vaccine, which is good for us.

They’re on a race because they know that the first one to make it would earn the most),” he said.

Roque noted that the country would be putting its hopes that a vaccine would be developed without too much delay.

“So let’s hope that the free market this time will really come to our rescue and will incentivize the drug manufacturers to come up with (a) vaccine sooner than later,” he said.

Duterte earlier said the government would purchase the most affordable vaccine that will be sold due to budget constraints.

He also said he would seek a discount from China and Russia on the Covid-19 vaccines that each of the two countries developed and promised to supply the Philippines with.

Despite lacking funds, the President assured that the government would provide free vaccines to the disadvantaged once these are available.

he Department of Education (DepEd) is all set to welcome School Year 2020-2021 through its National School Opening Day Program on October 5.

To kick-off with a nationwide simultaneous flag-raising ceremony by 7:30 a.m., the program will be led by Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones, who will give an inspirational message and formally declare the opening of the new school year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Ito ay (This is a) cel-

ebration, ito ay (this is a) declaration of victory. A declaration of continuity of education whatever challenges we are facing.

Education will continue, and [our] children will continue learning, and [our] parents will continue supporting us. Our government, our teachers, all of us are involved in this effort and this will be the biggest victory of all at this time of the pandemic,” Briones said in a press briefing last week.

hilippine Seven Corporation (PSC), the exclusive licensor of 7-Eleven in the Philippines, has partnered with the Department of Health’s (DOH) BIDA Solusyon campaign to take the fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to the barangay level.

DA told the Philippine News Agency that the PHP2.6 billion were purchased via “direct procurement from farmers by 443 local government units” nationwide.

DA Assistant Secretary for Agribusiness Kristine Evangelista said vegetable procurement for this year is particularly higher compared to the same period last year.

“We have reason to believe that LGU procurement increased because agricultural commodities

also became part of the food packs distributed [by the DA] to their constituents,” she added.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar has been advocating his appeal to LGUs, especially in the barangay level, to source out produce from local farmers even before the pandemic took place.

“We urge our LGUs to prioritize buying fresh produce from our farmers.

It’s a win-win situation for both consumers and producers,” Dar said in March

during distribution of food packs amid the raging pandemic.

The food supplies could actually come from the “kanayunan”, he said, minimizing movement from one location to another.

In line with this vision, Dar launched the “Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita” to bolster the agency’s call for “bountiful harvest and prosperous farmers and fisherfolk”.

Kadiwa is a market system which sells major agricultural goods at reasonably low prices to help poor Filipino households.

Kadiwa is loosely translated as “one idea, one thought,” which is in consonance with the Dar’s “new thinking” for the agriculture paradigm.

Evangelista, in a virtual conference on Tuesday, said as of Sept. 26, a total of 1,439 Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita

on Wheels were conducted.

“The total sales generated amounted to PHP47,685,923,” she added.

Evangelista added that they have taken note of some 20 deliveries to various LGUs and Agribusiness Development Center Pabili through Kadiwa ni Ani at Kita Online, which generated sales totaling PHP5,553,095.

She said including some PHP56,143 earned from retail sales, the overall sales for Kadiwa in the regions amounted to PHPP290,146,075.

The Kadiwa project establishes a direct link between the farmers and fisherfolk and the consuming public.

In a separate online forum on Monday, Asis Perez, convenor of advocacy

he Philippine Stock Exchange Inc. (PSE) has approved the initial public offering (IPO) application of Converge Information and Communications Technology Solutions Inc. (Converge).

he Department of Energy (DOE) has called on national government agencies (NGAs) and local government units (LGUs) to observe energy efficiency and conservation in their respective offices through cutting fuel and electricity consumption by at least 10 percent.

DOE Energy Utilization Management Bureau director Patrick Aquino said they have observed lower electricity consumption in government offices, particularly during the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) period as alternative work arrangements were implemented.

“Government agencies that are non-front-liners have seen a decline in their energy consumption. More or less, they are able to attain the mandated 10-percent (reduction) under the Bayanihan to Heal as One,” Aquino said during the virtual Luzon Energy Efficiency and Conservation Forum for Local Development Thursday.

The Bayanihan 2 Act orders government offices to conserve and regulate the distribution and use of power, fuel, energy, and water, but also to ensure adequate supply amid the pandemic.

However, it was observed that there was an increase in fuel consumption in government offices as their vehicles were making more trips to observe social distancing requirements in servicing front-liners and employees, the DOE official said.

“In terms of peso impact, since we are also at a regime of lower fuel prices, it more or less offset it,” Aquino added.

He said there is no “one size fits all in terms of energy consumption” in government offices.

For instance, hospitals are using more electricity and fuel amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“But with what we’ve seen is government offices and agencies, since we’ve adopted (a) skeleton workforce and work-fromhome scheme, complying with the 10-percent reduction is attainable in the electricity side,” Aquino said.

He urged NGAs and LGUs to invest in energy efficiency and conservation.

Citing DOE’s investments on energy efficiency and conservation, Aquino said the department spent PHP2.35 million on 2,181 linear and compact fluorescent lamps.

This investment has a payback time of 2.82 years in terms of electric consumption savings.

It is expected to generate an annual savings of PHP834,142.90 or 69,511.91 kilowatt-hours of power savings.

For the air conditioning system, the DOE spent PHP22.43 million to replace its 223 non-inverter type units.

Although payback time is longer at 4.61 years, yearly savings is around PHP4.81 million or 405,844.32 kilowatt-hours of consumption. (PNA)

BSP okays gov’t request for P540-B funding boost

he Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) policy-making Monetary Board (MB) has approved the national government’s request for an additional PHP540 billion in provisional advances.

In a Viber message to journalists on Thursday, BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno said the Board’s decision was made during its rate-setting meeting.

Diokno, however, did not give details of the Board’s decision.

On Wednesday, he announced that the national government has asked for a funding boost to address additional pandemic-related financing.

This is the second cash advance extended by the central bank to the national government following the PHP300 billion it provided through a repurchase agreement to buy government securities last March.

Diokno said the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) “fully settled the previous PHP300 billion repo (repurchase agreement) on 29 September 2020.”

The BSP’s Charter authorizes the central bank to extend funding support to the national government in an amount that is equivalent to 20 percent of the latter’s average revenues in the past three years, which to date is about PHP540 billion.

National Treasurer Rosalia de Leon said the latest BSP cash advance would not affect this year’s borrowing program because it “is part of the PHP3-trillion borrowing program.”

De Leon was referring to the government’s bid to borrow about PHP6 trillion for this year and next to finance expenditures since revenues have also been affected by the pandemic. (PNA)

7K micro-enterprises to benefit from BARMM cash assistance

he Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) social services arm is eyeing to distribute cash assistance to 7,557 small businesses in the region within the year.

Ministry of Social Services and Development chief Raissa Jajurie said this during Wednesday's launching of the Sustainable Livelihood Program - Seed Capital Fund (SLPSCF) in Northern Kabuntalan, Maguindanao.

While in Kabuntalan, the MSSD minister dispensed PHP15,000 each to 47 selected small business owners.

“The beneficiaries would be strictly monitored by the MSSD as to the dispensation of their assistance involving their respective businesses,” Jajurie told reporters.

Bai Sabal, a local convenience store owner who is one of the SLP-SCF ben-

eficiaries, said she will use the money to buy additional goods for her store based on the request of her neighbors.

“I will only purchase items that are important and needed at the moment,” she said in the dialect.

Jajurie said they will soon expand the distribution of grants to other areas with Maguindanao having a total of 1,510 beneficiaries, Sulu (1,359); Basilan (1,147); Tawi-Tawi (1,147); Lanao del Sur A and B with 981 each, and the 63 villages in North Cotabato (432).

SSS to release pensions via PESONet starting Oct., drops issuance of checks

he Social Security System on Thursday said it would release pensions through PESONet and eliminate distribution through checks to expedite monthly crediting.

Starting October 2020, regular pensions will be released through the DBP's disbursement facility via the Philippine Electronic Fund Transfer System and Operations Network (PESONet) and DBP-accredited remittance transfer companies/cash payout outlets, the state-run pension fund said in a statement.

Pensioners can choose to receive their monthly payout through their accounts in any PESONet participating bank and e-wallet provider such as PayMaya or arrange cash pick-up via DBP cash padala through M Lhuillier, the SSS said in a statement.

Those receiving their pension through PESONet participating banks no longer need to enroll their accounts, the SSS said. However, those receiving checks or from non-PESONet participating banks are required to change their accounts accordingly on or before Oct. 31, it said.

"To receive pensions through PESONet participating banks, pensioners must enroll their respective single savings accounts to the SSS. For e-wallets, they must enroll their mobile number linked to their account, while for RTC/CPO, they must also register their mobile number where they prefer to receive the reference number," the SSS said.

DA tells LGUs to buy directly from farmers

A

s the harvest season for rice farmers arrives, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said it is pressed to increase the selling price of palay (unmilled rice) to assist the country’s industry players amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar said in a virtual conference on Thursday the key to hiking the selling price is to increase its demand.

Dar urged provincial local government units (LGUs) as well as the private sector to buy directly from their farmers.

“The LGU- and private sector-led palay and corn buying will complement efforts of the Department of Agriculture through the National Food Authority (NFA) to buy as much as possible from rice farmers using its 2020 PHP10-billion procurement fund,” he said.

Dar hopes to replicate

the success of last year’s palay procurement efforts by provincial LGUs which was led by the top rice-producing provinces.

He said they were able to buy more than PHP30-billion worth of palay from farmers.

In a separate statement, the DA wrote to governors of the top 12 rice-producing provinces to buy palay from their farmers anew.

“We are encouraging them once again, led by Governor Rodito Albano of Isabela and Governor Oyie Umali of Nueva Ecija,” Dar added.

Aside from Albano and Umali, Dar had a per-

sonal talk with governors Matthew Joseph Marcos Manotoc of Ilocos Norte, Ryan Luis Singson of Ilocos Sur, Dennis Pineda in Pampanga, Daniel Fernando of Bulacan, Edwin Jubahib of Davao del Norte, and Nelson Dayanghirang of Davao Oriental.

Meanwhile, NFA administrator Judy Carol Dansal said they offer higher buying price of palay that are “clean and dry,” or those that they consider 14-percent moist, at PHP19 per kilogram, while palay bags with 30-percent moisture content are bought at a lower price of PHP14PHP17 per kilogram.

“Our mandate in the NFA is to buy from farmers (to help them) and stock it for emergencies, calamities (to ensure supply of government food packs). Dapat ang binibili naming palay ay magandang klase na kasi nga iiimbak namin ito (We would prioritize palay of

good quality because this is for storing). Mas maganda kasi na dried talaga ang paninda para ma-enjoy nila ang kanilang kita (It is really better if they sell dry palay so they can enjoy their profit),” she said.

The PHP10-billion procurement fund of NFA will enable them to buy some 10 million bags of unmilled rice, Dansal added.

For September, the NFA chief said they procured some 1,793,152 bags of palay, short of more than a hundred thousand bags to complete their targeted 1,931,200 bags for the month.

Since January, the NFA was able to buy 4,926,143 bags of their 9,463,150 bags target, which means it only accomplished 52.06 percent.

For the whole year, Dansal said they aim to buy 18,723,950 bags of unmilled rice from the farmers. (PNA)

The DBM said it has sent a letter to Hontiveros’ office “to furnish us a copy of the basis for her supposed findings of overpricing” but has not received a reply.

“It has been often said that reiteration of a baseless allegation does not make it legitimate, it only makes the allegation absurd and nonsensical,” it said, adding the “PS-DBM stand by our previous expression of facts.” (PNA)

COCA-COLA BEVERAGES PHILIPPINES, INC. SUPPORTS MINDANAO’S GROWTH WITH ADDITIONAL INVESTMENTS

C

oca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI)’s investment outlook is not dampened by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amid a nationwide economic slowdown, the beverage company remains bullish and is on track with expansion projects in Mindanao, whose further development the Company is intent on supporting.

At the 29th Mindanao Business Conference (MinBizCon), held virtually recently, CEO and President Gareth McGeown shared that CCBPI has invested an additional $22 million (PHP1.065 billion) for Q4 of 2020 alone—bringing up the total 2020 investment in the country to over $95M (approx. PHP4.7B).

A significant amount of this has been allocated to increase operational capacity in Mindanao by 30%. With much of the spending allotted for infrastructure, CCBPI will have three new manufacturing lines in the region, providing new job opportunities for more Mindanaoans.

“Mindanao has been a growth engine for us for the last few years. We have seen that our growth rates in the region have continued to expand double-digit over the last two to three years, and we have a firm belief that such growth will continue,” said McGeown.

CCBPI’s Mindanao footprint includes four manufacturing plants, specifically in Misamis Ori-

ental, Zamboanga, Davao City, and Davao del Sur; nine distribution centers; and 3,200 partners.

McGeown also noted that consumers in Mindanao are more open to new products compared to those in Metro Manila, another reason why the territory plays a critical role as a launchpad for new portfolio brands and variants. The uniqueness of consumption behavior in Mindanao makes it critical to CCBPI’s growth strategy.

“More than the consumers’ taste and preferences, the region’s growth rate gives us a reason to believe that great days are ahead for Mindanao,” added McGeown.

EATING PESTICIDE-FREE CROPS NOW POSSIBLE “

Over the course of time since man’s advent, a small percentage of more than half a million species of insects have come into conflict with human welfare...” – Rachel Carson (1962) Chemicals that kill pests and unwanted weeds are getting the attention of the media these days.

“Ban entire pesticide class to protect children’s health,” The Guardian headlines!

“Exposure to organophosphates increases the risk of reduced IQs, memory and attention deficits, and autism for prenatal children,” writes Arthur Neslen, quoting a paper that was published in Plos Medicine.

“Popular oat cereals, oatmeal, granola and snack bars come with a hefty dose of the weed-killing poison in Roundup,” another news report said.

For one, those commonly-used herbicides can make bacteria develop antibiotic resistance significantly faster, according to a feature published by Newsweek.

“Herbicides are among the most widely used and dispersed manufactured products on Earth,” Jack Heinemann, professor at the University of Canterbury, told Newsweek.

“Some form of exposure for people, pets and livestock can be routinely expected.

On the other hand, “antibiotics are used at high rates particularly on people, pets and livestock.

Therefore, the combination of exposures for bacteria that live on us is all but guaranteed.”

Globally, at least three

million people are poisoned by pesticides every year, of whom 20,000 people die. That’s according to the Geneva-based World Health Organization (WHO).

The Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) defines pesticide as “any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling, or mitigating any insects, rodents, nematodes, fungi or weeds, or any other form of life declared to be pest.”

Pesticide also refers to “any substance or mixture of substances intended for use as a plant regulator, defoliant, or desiccant.”

Worldwatch Institute, based in Washington, D.C., said that the first records of pesticides come from the ancient Greeks. Pliny the Elder compiled a list of common compounds like arsenic, sulfur, caustic soda, and olive oil used to protect crops. The Chinese later recorded using similar substances to combat insects and fungi. In the 19th century, European farmers commenced using heavy metals like copper sulfate and iron sulfate to fight weeds.

For a long time, no one seemed to question the safety of pesticides. Not until 1962, when marine biologist Rachel Carlson wrote the now classic, Silent Spring. In her book, she described how pesticides cause long-term haz-

ards to birds, fish, other wildlife, and humans, but provides only short-term gains to controlling the pests.

“Pesticides are like bombs being dropped in the food web creating enormous d e s t r u c t i o n ,” deplores entomologist Dr. K.L. Heong, who used to work at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Baños, Laguna.

Unknowingly, pesticides are killing more than just the pests.

“Some pesticides harm the living organisms other than the targeted pest,” the Davaobased Technical Assistance Center for the Development of Rural and Urban Poor (TACDRUP) observes. “Some (pesticides) travel to the food chain to bioaccumulate in higher organisms.”

Gretta Goldenman and Sarojini Rengam explain in their book, Pesticides and You, that pesticides concentrated even to toxic levels via the food chain. Thus, an increased feeding on plants sprayed with pesticides might be eaten by another insect which might be eaten by a bird.

“Traces of pesticides too small to kill the

targeted pest can accumulate to levels high enough to harm species further on up the food chain,” the two authors warned.

Pesticides are also hazardous to human beings.

They can enter the human

body through the mouth, lungs, digestive system, or skin, according to health experts. Depending on the pesticide, health effects can be immediate (acute) or they can occur after years of low-level exposure.

Acute poisoning generally occurs after an accident on the skin or drinking a bottle of pesticides.

Medical doctors say the symptoms of acute poisoning occur within 24 hours: vomiting, headache, respiratory problems, heart failure, etc.

Long-term effects of pesticides include skin disorders, damage to internal organs (liver, kidneys, lungs), increased sensitivity to pesticides and effects on the progeny, according to medical experts.

Despite the health and environmental risks, farmers are still hooked on many of the worst offenders. Without pesticides, they claim, their costs would skyrocket, harvests would plummet, and more people would go hungry. It is widely assumed that for big harvests, pesticides are essential.

Filipino farmers, however, need not to use pesticides – whether natural or synthetic – to get rid of those pesky pests. One good way to avoid using pesticides is by relying on Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to do the work. Bt is a common soil bacterium so called because it was first isolated in the Thuringia region of Germany. It produces a protein that par-

alyzes the larvae of some harmful insects.

Scientists, through genetic engineering, have taken the Bt gene responsible for the production of the insecticidal protein from the bacterium and incorporated it into the genome of plants. As such, the plants have a built-in mechanism of protection against targeted pests.

Among the crops where Bt is introduced include corn, cotton, poplar, potato, rice, soybean, tomato, and more recently eggplant. “The protein produced by the plants does not get washed away, nor is it destroyed by sunlight,” said a briefing paper published by the Global Knowledge Center on Crop Biotechnology. “The plants are protected from the insects round the clock regardless of the situation.”

Since Bt crops are able to defend themselves against pests, the use of chemical insecticides is significantly reduced.

“Aside from being effective against insect pests, Bt crops have lower incidences of opportunistic microbial pathogens, such as the fungus Fusarium,” the briefing paper said.

“This fungus produces mycotoxins that can be deadly to livestock and also cause cancer in humans.”

On tests conducted on dogs, guinea pigs, rats, fish, frogs, salamanders and birds, the Bt protein was found not to have any harmful effects. What was interesting about the study was that no toxic effects were found on beneficial or predator insects, such as honeybees and lady beetles, Extonet reports

HILADELPHIA — There’s a new Doc in Philadelphia — one charged with reviving a 76ers organization that fell far short of NBA championship expectations.

The 76ers reached an agreement on Thursday (Friday) with Doc Rivers to become the latest coach to try and lead the Sixers to their first NBA championship since 1983, a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on Thursday on condition of anonymity because the

Sixers had not formally announced the move.

Rivers takes over for Brett Brown, who was fired after the 76ers were swept in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Rivers was fired about two weeks after the Los Angeles Clippers wasted a 3-1 series lead and lost to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals.

Rivers spent seven seasons with the Clippers, making the playoffs in six of them — major success for a once-woebegone

Finally, PBA teams start practice inside Clark ‘bubble’

irst in, first on the court.

Magnolia got the initial feel of the Angeles University Foundation court as it became the first team to practice when the PBA finally signalled the start of scrimmages 10 days before the restart of the Philippine Cup.

The Hotshots actually practiced at the same time as the Meralco Bolts, who occupied the customized gymnasium located at the second floor.

Magnolia, the first team to check in inside the Clark Freefort bubble, trained two up at the fourth floor of the university in Angeles, Pampanga.

Everything snowballed from there.

After sanitizing both courts, Phoenix and Terra Firma got their turn late in the afternoon, before TnT Tropang Giga concluded the first official day of scrimmages by doing their thing early in the evening.

The team practices were the first the league had in the last six months following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was the first time

we’re able to do five-onfive,” said Meralco coach Norman Black.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us in preparation for the start of the tournament.”

The start of scrimmages were finally allowed after all 12 teams that went inside the bubble at the start of the week tested negative from the virus.

On Friday, all training goes full blast as the seven remaining teams will finally play on the two AUF courts.

Alaska and Blackwater kick off the whole scrimmages, followed by Barangay Ginebra and Magnolia, NLEX and Meralco, NorthPort and Phoenix, defending five-time champion San Miguel Beer along with Rain or Shine, and TnT and Terra Firma. (PBA)
