An official of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) affirmed on Friday the alignment of the landing site within the property of Paradise Island Beach Resort (PIBR).

“We cannot change anymore the alignment after the long study. The alignment that was identified and the study is final,” said Undersecretary Emil Sadain of DPWH in a text message.

Sadain emphasized that the Feasibility Study (FS) was done thoroughly such as the technical, economics, social, environmental and other engineering aspects.

“There is no shortcut here. Having the alignment in the Samal island side inside Paradise Resort is not intentional but based on long prudent and factual study,” he said.

The Rodriguez family, who owns PIBR and owner of the property that will be hit by the construction of the landing site of the bridge in the Samal side, is appealing to DPWH and Hong Kong-based consultant Ove Arup and Partners Hong Kong Ltd. for its realignment to protect the marine environment in the Paradise Reef that the family is preserving for a long time.

Sarmiento, chief executive officer and founder of Climate Change Adaptation Resettlement Earth (CARE) Commune, said in a virtual press conference on Thursday that the Rodriguez family might be forced to file a Writ of Kalikasan to stop the project if the government ignores its appeal for realignment.

Sadain, however, said that even the writ cannot stop the project.

Mayor Al David Uy of Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS) said the Writ of Kalikasan cannot be applied to the establishments that will be affected in the construction of the bridge as they are in the area, which is being considered commercial.

“I asked my city legal here in Samal, and I don’t think that would qualify for a Writ of Kalikasan

since the area is commercial,” said Uy. Sadain assured that the preservation and protection of marine environment is the agency’s topmost priority in the construction of the bridge.

“We have high regard for the environment. We will protect marine diversity while constructing the SIDC Bridge. In any progressive nation, there can always be a better way to harmonize infrastructure development and care for environment,” he said.

The P23.04 billion bridge, which will span 2.8 kilometers, will be funded through official development assistance (ODA).

The final bridge location will be in R. Castillo Street, Agdao on the Davao City side and in Barangay Caliclic in Samal side.

resident Rodrigo Duterte has extended the declaration of a state of calamity throughout the Philippines for one more year due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

In Proclamation No. 1021 signed on Sept. 16 and released on Friday, Duterte extended the state of calamity “for a period of one year", or from Sept.

13, 2020 to Sept. 12, 2021, “unless earlier lifted or extended as circumstances may warrant".

Duterte said that while "significant strides" have been achieved to strengthen the country's efforts to fight the spread of the virus, Covid-19 cases continue to increase in the country.

"The number of Covid-19 positive cases and deaths continue to rise despite efforts and interventions to contain the same," the proclamation read.

Duterte said the ex-

tension would allow the national government, as well as local government units (LGUs), to continue using the "appropriate funds, including the Quick Response Fund, in their disaster preparedness and response efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19, monitor and control prices of basic necessities and prime commodities, and provide basic services to the affected populations".

Under the proclamation, all government agencies and LGUs are enjoined to cooperate and mobilize the necessary resources to “undertake critical, urgent, and appropriate disaster response aid and measures in a timely manner to curtail and eliminate the threat of Covid-19.”

MinDA, AMRECO forms advisory group for Mindanao electric woes

op officials of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and electric cooperatives (ECs) in the island region convened here Thursday to discuss and seek solutions to current power issues.

MinDA chair Secretary Emmanuel Piñol, who presided the meeting, said the gathering aims to tackle the problems confronting the electric cooperatives in delivering efficient power supply and prevent any untoward power crisis that could affect the island's development.

Joining the MinDA chairperson were National Electrification Administration (NEA) head Edgardo Masongsong, Central Mindanao Electric Cooperative Association president Godofredo B. Homez, three power-block party-list lawmakers in Congress, and Corazon Cullantes, who heads the Association of Mindanao Electric Cooperative (AMRECO).

“We are gathered here not to blame, but formulate solution to the current problems the ECs are facing in order to prevent power shortage and outages on the island like what happened in the past years”, Piñol said.

Discussions focused on the root cause of frequent brownouts, power reliability, low service connection of 35 percent in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and outstanding financial capabilities of some ailing electric cooperatives.

Masongsong said the effort of electric cooperatives to achieve total electrification in far-flung areas requires an efficient system.

He also commended the MinDA for initiating the discussion, which was aligned with NEA’s direc-

tion to bring rural development through electrification.

“One hundred two of 121 ECs in the country have competent financial and institutional performance and now focuses more on improving its technical capability to deliver reliable electricity in every household,” he said.

Based on NEA’s data, low electric connections--particularly in BARMM--is connected to a particular locality's demographic condition, peace and order, compliance of building code, political interventions, and road right-of-way issues.

NEA said the problems encountered in generation and transmission are the major causes of brownouts in Mindanao, based on the data provided by the ECs in Mindanao from January–July 2020.

“It is always the ECs, being distribution utilities, which are being blamed for power interruptions in their respective localities,” Cullantes said during the meeting.

After the discussion, MinDA proposed to form the Local Power Development Advisory Group (LPDAG), an interim cluster with the Mindanao Power Monitoring Committee (MPMC), the DENR, Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the local government units, as members.

Piñol said LPDAG intends to conduct further discussions on power issues in every region through the local electric cooperatives.

“Electricity is the backbone that drives our investors and economy thus, we must be prepared in crafting a long-term solution to realize the goal of a prosperous Mindanao” Piñol pointed out. (PNA)

PAGASA raises La Niña warning in late October

MinDA Secretary Emmanuel Piñol described Talaingod as a tribal town in the Pantaron Mountain Range between the provinces of Davao del Norte and Bukidnon that serves as “a painful reminder of how tribal lands were stripped bare of forests trees by logging companies owned by the rich and powerful then abandoned leaving behind an impoverished people”.

“MinDA will support this undertaking by introducing the Green Mindanao Project, a family-based tree farming program with high-value crops as intercrop,” Piñol said in a state-

The program will involve a financing package from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) to establish nurseries and fund livelihood programs such as high-value vegetable farming.

An off-taker of the lumber produced from the tree farms will also be engaged to ensure the sustainability of the Green Mindanao Project, he added.

Alcantara and Sons (ALSONS) which operated in the area for decades pulled out in the early the late 1990s, the communist New People's Army (NPA) exploited the tribal people's anger and penetrated the area, establishing the controversial Salugpongan School,” Piñol recalled.

1 Marine dead, 4 hurt in Maguindanao blast

A

roadside explosion struck at a village in Datu Hoffer town, Maguindanao Friday night as a military convoy was passing through, leaving 1 soldier dead and 4 others hurt, the military said Saturday, calling the incident an act of terrorism.

A convoy of the 5th Military Company, Marine Battalion Landing Team 5 was traversing a road in Barangay Lipongo when an anti-personnel mine exploded.

One Marine was killed while 4 others were wounded.

"Investigation is ongoing to identify the perpetrators of this inhumane act of terrorism," said Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, Commander of the military's Joint Task Force Central.

Identities of the victims have yet to be disclosed.

SM City Davao opens food festival

ith the Covid-19 pandemic hitting the food industry badly, SM City Davao is flipping the switch that would spark a restart.

On Friday, SM City Davao opened a Food Festival at the event center putting forward its line-up of dining tenants.

Eight tenants took part in the event which included Juice Cubi, Mang Inasal, Bon Appetea, Green Bountry, and Giardino Gelato which installed their respective pop up store and offered discounts.

The food stalls at the event center will be available until Sunday but the food fest will run the whole months of September and October with dining tenants providing exciting deals, discounts and promotions.

“Food fest is a nation-

wide campaign by SM Supermalls which gives tenants a chance to get customers through a pop up store outside their stores,” said Ruel Morales, marketing manager of SM City Davao in an interview.

Morales said operations of the mall’s dining tenants are not the same pre-Covid.

Although, the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) has allowed restaurants in other parts of the country under modified GCQ to reopen, however, at 50 percent capacity.

Some schools that span 5 to 10 hectares may be capable of housing telco facilities but not those that are as big as the Eiffel tower, Pascua said in jest.

DITO plans building base stations in public schools

ITO Telecommunity said it was "negotiating" a deal with the Department of Education to co-locate or build base stations in public schools.

Once approved, the third telco would be able to build facilities within school premises while providing the education department access to "immediate internet connection," DITO chief technology officer Rodolfo Santiago told reporters in a virtual press briefing.

Public schools are adopting blended and distance learning, or the use of internet and modules, while waiting for the COVID-19 vaccine. Public schools resume classes on Oct. 5.

"We’re negotiating with DepEd to allow us to co-locate our base stations in some of their facilities. We're hoping that this is a mutual opportunity because we would be able to provide coverage to areas that will need it.

he Philippine government does not see any reason the European Union (EU) would revoke the trade perks it granted to Manila, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said Friday.

“So far, we are able to explain objectively the Philippines side on issues that are raised and we don’t see any reason why our GSP+ privilege will be withdrawn,” he said in a statement.

In a resolution released Thursday, the European Parliament called on the European Commission to immediately initiate the procedure to temporarily revoke the Philippines’ GSP+ status over the alleged “seriousness of the human rights violations” in the country.

Lopez underscored that an inter-agency working group is in place to respond accordingly to various issues if and when they are officially raised by the EU Commission.

“The EU Commission has a mechanism in place and process to follow to verify issues before sanctions are imposed,” he said.

The GSP+ or the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus is an EU program, which allows countries to export eligible products to EU states duty-free.

Beating osteoporosis by really trying O

By HENRYLITO D. TACIO steoporosis – which comes from the two Greek words, ostoun meaning “bone” and poros meaning “pore” – is a silent killer. Unknowingly, many people do not know they have osteoporosis until they have a fracture, sometimes due to just a slight fall.

“One out of every three Filipino women, as well as one in five Pinoy men, is likely to suffer from osteoporosis,” wrote Mabelle Aban in an article which appeared in Medical Observer. “These are higher than the number of people succumbing to cancer of the breast or prostate – and should be given the attention they deserve.”

A survey carried out by the Philippine Orthopedic Center showed that 62.9 percent of the patients aged 50 and over who had been admitted for fractures were affected by osteoporosis.

Sixty three percent of these fractures were at the hip.

“These figures suggest that osteoporosis is indeed a serious problem in the country,” said the Osteoporosis Society of the Philippines, Inc. (OSPFI), which was created in 1997 to disseminate information about osteoporosis to the public. “With a growing population of elderly Filipinos, the increase in osteoporosis-related fractures will translate into a potentially huge health and social problem in the near future.”

The U.S. National Osteoporosis Foundation defines osteoporosis as “a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures, especially of the hip, spine and wrist, although any bone can be affected.”

The weakening of bones can be taking place very quietly for years, even decades. In his book, Preventing Osteoporosis, Dr. Kenneth Cooper refers to osteoporosis as the “silent destroyer.”

“Most people reach their peak bone mass in the

spine between the ages of 25 and 30 and reach their peak bone mass in the long bones – such as the hip – from age 35 to 40,” says Dr. Cooper. “After we pass this peak bone mass age, and especially after about age 45, all the bones in the body begin to lose density.”

Osteoporosis causes bones to be weak and brittle. Bones can become so brittle that even lifting shopping bags or a cough can cause a fracture. Women have a higher risk of osteoporosis than men. To begin with, women have a lower bone mass than men.

After menopause, a woman’s estrogen levels drop sharply, accelerating bone loss.

However, osteoporosis should not be thought of as a woman’s condition. Men can suffer from the condition and those who have low levels of the male hormone testosterone have a higher risk of osteoporosis.

Other risk factors include previous fractures through normal falls (not involving violent force such as in car accidents), early menopause (before 45 years of age), family history of osteoporosis, small and slender body frame, certain illness such as rheumatoid arthritis or hyperactive thyroid, and medication such as steroids (oral or injected).

Because official diag-

nosis of osteoporosis often comes too late – after a fracture – the strategy is to start fighting bone less early and to never let up. As Dr. Manju Chandran, Director of the Osteoporosis and Bone Metabolism Unit (Department of Endocrinology) at the Singapore General Hospital puts it: “Even if you already reach our peak bone mass, you should still aim to reduce bone loss and encourage new bone growth.

It is only when bone loss is greater than new bone growth that osteoporosis sets in.”

To think of, you have many weapons in your arsenal. The Doctors Book of Home Remedies shares the following: 1. Get enough calcium and Vitamin D Calcium is required to support bone growth, bone healing, and maintain bone strength and is one aspect of treatment for osteoporosis. For adults between ages of 19 and 50, a daily intake of 1,000 mg of calcium is recommended. Those who are 65 and older should eat at least 700mg of calcium a day. Good sources of calcium include milk, cheese, certain vegetable greens and calcium-fortified food such as juices, cereals and breads.

Several studies have

shown that a high intake of vitamin D reduces fractures in the elderly. The Women’s Health Initiative found that though calcium plus vitamin D did increase bone density by one percent.

Those who are above 50 years of age should aim to have an intake of between 400 and 800 IU of vitamin D daily. Apart from getting vitamin D from our food, another good source is sunlight.

2. Eat a balanced diet Eating a balanced diet ensures you get enough phosphorus and other minerals, like magnesium, vitamin K, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 that are also essential for healthy bones.

Everydiet.org recommends: “The best source of all the nutrients you need is in a sensible balanced diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables, beans, yogurt, bread and potatoes, plus smaller amounts of very lean meat, low-fat cheese and oily fish (especially sardines), plus at least 250 ml of low-fat milk per day.”

3. Limit your alcohol intake The WebMD.com gives this information: “Regular consumption of 2 to 3 ounces of alcohol every day increases the risk of osteoporosis. It interferes with the absorption and use of

calcium and vitamin D and other bone nutrients.”

The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio has noted that osteoporosis has been estimated to affect between 30 and 50 percent of alcoholics, and that chronic abuse of alcohol has been associated with decreased density in the bones in the neck and around the spine. In addition to the effects of the alcohol itself, “other nutritional deficiencies associated with chronic alcohol abuse” also play a factor in decreasing bone mass among those who are dependent upon alcohol, the clinic’s website indicates.

“Drink only in moderation – no more than one or two drinks per day for men, and more than one drink per day for women,” suggests Dr. Cooper.

4. Moderate your intake of caffeine Caffeine, found in coffee and tea, appears to decrease calcium absorption by a small amount. Drinking more than three cups of coffee every day may be harmful to bone health. If you enjoy drinking coffee and tea, you can help to make up for any calcium loss by getting enough calcium to meet your body’s needs.

Also keep in mind that caffeine is often added to soft drinks. Some studies suggest that colas, but not other soft drinks, are associated with bone loss. The carbonation in soft drinks does not cause any harm to bone. The caffeine and phosphorus commonly found in colas may contribute to bone loss.

5. Cut down on salty food Eating foods that have a lot of salt causes your body to lose calcium and can lead to bone loss. “The more sodium in your diet, the more sodium you excrete – and the more sodium you excrete, the more calcium you excrete,” explains Dr. Morris Notelovitz, author of Stand Tall! The Informed Woman’s Guide to Preventing Osteoporosis. “What probably happens is that as calcium is being excreted in the urine, the blood levels of calcium drop, causing the release of parathyroid hormone, which breaks down bone to restore calcium levels.”

Try to limit the amount of processed foods, canned foods and salt added to the

foods you eat each day. To learn if a food is high in sodium, look at the nutrition facts label. If it lists 20% or more for the percent daily value, it is high in sodium.

Getting 2,400 mg or less of sodium per day should not harm bones.

6. Don’t smoke Smoking is thought to increase bone loss by reducing the absorption of calcium in the bodies.

Smoking one pack of cigarettes per day throughout adult life can itself lead to loss of 5-10 percent of bone mass,” says Dr. William C. Shiel. Jr., a fellow of the American Colleges of Physicians and Rheumatology. “Smoking cigarettes decreases estrogen levels and can lead to bone loss in women before menopause.

Smoking cigarettes also can lead to earlier menopause.

In postmenopausal women, smoking is linked with increased risk of osteoporosis.”

7. Exercise to build bones “If you don’t exercise, you lose bone,” says Dr. Robert Heaney, a professor at the Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Exercise makes bones stronger and denser.

But there are even more reasons to exercise.

The benefit of exercise for osteoporosis has mostly to do with decreasing the risk of falls, probably because balance is improved and/or muscle strength is increased. Research has not yet determined what type of exercise is best for osteoporosis or for how long. Until research has answered these questions, most doctors recommend weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, preferably daily.

Exercises such as tai chi, Pilates and yoga improve balance and flexibility.

8. Maintain a healthy weight A low body weight increases risk of osteoporosis, as does a previous history of anorexia nervosa.

But it does not mean that heavier people don’t get osteoporosis. Having a normal weight is beneficial for general health and reduces risk of other chronic conditions such as heart diseases and diabetes.

SAYING “NO” WHEN YOU WANT TO SAY “NO” Have you had this dilemma before?

Bet, you’ve been in this rather, oftentimes embarrassing situation.

Surely, this applies especially to us Pinoys who, in our innate cultural upbringing, do not wish or cannot afford to turn down a friendly request even when we know we are incapable of doing it.

Or in plain language, you do not want to do it but your good nature is that you always want to accommodate because you are hoping you can find a way and help a friend in need.

The ‘padrino’system or “influence peddling” - the dirtier connotation - pushes a person to acquiesce, even in a lukewarm fashion, to search for even “under-the-table” arrangements which, in effect, are a violation of decent human standards and norms of conduct.

I am wont to quote Benjamin Disraeli who wrote: “Be frank and explicit. That is the right line to take when you wish to conceal your own mind and to confuse

the minds of others.”

It’s mind-boggling, is it not?

It is different when other people of different culture and races treat this topic.

Like the westerners in Europe and the Americans in North America, they will refuse you if they needed to say “No’’ because their response is really a “No.” They will not beat about the bush and say, “let’s see” if they already know your request cannot be accommodated knowing it is a circumvention of the law and the rules.

I’m talking on a general plain, of course.

I’m not making a sweeping statement because there are always exceptions (or exemptions) to the rules.

But, agree with me or not, you can see how Pinoys differ in responding to the above subject matter.

Because the Pinoy is always hospitable, even to a fault, right?

Even when the final outcome is already a negative one, the Pinoy makes a second attempt in the hope of overturning the earli-

er result because there are “connections” and strings that he can pull.

Sadly, this is the culture of accommodation prevailing in our environment that pulls us down to the gutter of mediocrity.

I mean to add that herein, there is an element of honesty that is integral to our reactions and responses to stimuli that govern our lives, individually and collectively.

We oftentimes misinterpret or interchange the meaning of “teamwork” to “conspiracy;” “assistance” to “accessory” and “friendship” to “connection and mediation.”

Within us, there is that propensity to bend the rules, even if we honestly know we are committing a criminal infraction and violation of the law.

And, despite that many have already been indicted for doing so, Pinoys continue to practice this malpractice in their lifestyle even when it is condemnably disgusting and distastefully dishonest work.

And, to top it all, this is not

even a hint of positive thinking.

Napoleon Hill, in his best-selling book Think and Grow Rich said: “Whatever the mind conceives, the body will achieve.”

Maybe, some Pinoys are taking this to a different level.

Because I hear many say: “Be positive. We can do this.”

The results of saying “No” when you needed to say “No” are immensely beneficial because eventually you prevent yourself from getting into uncompromising circumstances.

This, aside from getting yourself being hunted or haunted by the law.

I feel that there is a need to re-formulate our educational curricula to put more emphasis in this particular aspect of cultural and ethical mind-setting.

Not that there are less and less of honest men coming up but that there are more and more Pinoys getting involved in dishonest activities like the Philhealth fund mess, illegal drugs trade and smuggling, bribery and conspiracy to commit corruption in high

places.

Our school children – the next generation after this generation – should ideally inherit the admirable cultural character traits that will be bequeathed unto them.

To teach and ingrain in them these old Christian values cherished by our forefathers who fought and fell for our sake is far more vital and important than the academic lessons and degrees they will pick up in college and other institutions of learning.

Perhaps, I am veering towards morality concerns and issues of our contemporary times.

Yes, I am.

Because I am seeing a generation that is backsliding instead of elevating itself from its stagnant condition where the poor and the needy remain as they are while their rich and elite counterparts live distinctly apart - socially, economically and politically speaking.

OVERWORK AT YOUR OWN RISK! “Come to me, all who labor and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28 *** When God created Adam and Eve, He told them that they would be the caretakers of the Garden of Eden. In like manner, when we came into this world, we also have to work in order for us to live. I think there is no one in this world who doesn’t work – even the kings and queens.

Although it is not true to everyone, an average working week is some version of 8 am to 5pm (with one-hour break from 12 noon to 1 pm). Generally, people work from Monday to Friday – that’s 40 hours per week or 48 hours (if Saturday is included).

But there are people who overwork. These are people who work too hard, too much, or too long. A person is said to overwork if he or she works beyond his or her strength or capacity.

In 2015, the state-owned Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that around 8.1 million Filipinos did the unthinkable: working for more than 48 hours in a week. This figure represents a 41% increase since 1995.

Compulsory and mandatory or forced overtime are the words used by employers to make their employees work more than what the law recommends, according to the Wikipedia. Not doing so would mean a job loss or other reprisals such as demotion or assignment to unattractive tasks or work shifts.

Voluntary overtime, as Wikipedia defines it, is “work which the employer may ask the employee to do but which the employee is not required to work unless he agrees at the time to do so.”

It is considered compulsory overwork when “the individual has no choice but to work more than his capacity.” In simpler terms, compulsory overwork “is the lack of control that workers exercise over the boundary between work time and private time.”

Whether compulsory or mandatory, some recent studies have shown the costs of these overworks.

Recently, a study conducted by the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research and published in the journal Stroke showed that “people who work an average of one 10-hour day a week increases a stroke risk by nearly a third.”

“Researchers looking at the impact of working cultures on cardiovascular health found that people who said they worked 10 hours or more for at least 50 days a year were around 29% more likely to have a stroke,” wrote Alex Matthews-King in a news report which appeared in The Independent.

“Those who worked long hours chronically, over a period of 10 years or more, were even more at risk, with a 45% higher chance of having a stroke,” he added. Surprisingly, stroke risk was “most pronounced” in younger workers, under the age

of 50.

Another study, conducted

by Kansas State University in the United States in 2013 found that people who work more than 50 hours per week were likely to suffer both physical and mental health consequences.

“The inability to detach from work may initially appear to result in increased productivity,” Amy Morin, psychotherapist and international bestselling mental strength author, wrote in Forbes.

“Over time, however, productivity decreases and relationships breakdown. The stress takes a cumulative effect and eventually, the addiction to work can increase health risks and even contribute to premature death.”

In Japan, the problem of overwork has become so severe that the term “karoshi” (literally means “death by overwork,”) was coined. Estimates from the Japanese government health officials showed 200 people die from karoshi annually because of heart attacks or cerebral hemorrhages due to long hours spent at the work place.

Overwork was believed to the reason of the fatal stroke of Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi in 2000. The most recent case, however, was that of Miwa Sado, which Jenny Darmody reported in Silicon Republic. A 31-yearold employee of Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK, she logged 159 hours of overtime and only took two days off in the month leading up to her untimely death.

In a feature he wrote for Rappler, JC Punongbayan of the

University of Philippines School of Economics said that overwork “can lead to higher risks of impaired sleep, depression, and heart disease.”

Contrary to common belief, “overworked employees are also not necessarily more productive because of their longer hours,” Punongbayan contended.

In other words, the longer a person works, the lesser is his productivity.

Some experts use the word “workaholic” to people who are addicted to work. Although it implies the person is enjoying his work, it can also imply that he simply feels compelled to do it.

One such workaholic person is Kilroy J. Oldster. In Dead Toad Scrolls, he wrote: “People frequently ask me why I work so hard – prolong hours, infrequent vacations, and never calling in sick or missing work for any other reason. The short answer is that work is indivisible from life itself.”

To some being workaholic is good, but to most, it isn’t. “The incessant work-related activity masks anxiety, low self-esteem, and intimacy problems,” Wikipedia points out. “And as addictions to alcohol, drugs or gambling, workaholics’ denial and destructive behavior will persist despite feedback from loved ones or danger signs such as deteriorating relationships. Poor health is another warning sign.”

Some workaholics, though, know it but can’t get out from it. “For years, I worked seven-days weeks, through birth-

days and most public holidays, Christmases and New Year’s Eves included,” wrote Antonella Gambotto-Burke in Mama: Dispatches from the Frontline of Love. “I worked mornings and afternoons, resuming work after dinner. I remember feeling as if life were a protracted exercise in pulling myself out of a well by a rope, and that rope was work.”

The best possible solution: take a break and rest. Take it from Maya Angelou, author of Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now: “Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.”

Rest and work go hand in hand – like cart and carriage.

Listen to the words of Elisabeth Elliot, the woman behind Discipline: The Glad Surrender: “Work is a blessing. God has so arranged the world that work is necessary, and He gives us hands and strength to do it. The enjoyment of leisure would be nothing if we had only leisure. It is the joy of work well done that enables us to enjoy rest, just as it is the experience of hunger and thirst that make food and drink such pleasures.”

Patrick Reed followed up his opening 66 with an even-par 70 to be one stroke ahead of Bryson DeChambeau (68), with fellow Americans Justin Thomas (73) and Harris English (70) and Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello (70) two strokes off the pace.

Cameron Smith's three-over-par 73 left him at four over for the tournament as the bestplaced Aussie, one ahead of Adam Scott (74) and two clear of Jason Day and Lucas Herbert, who both made the halfway cut right on the number.

However, it was a second disastrous round in

a row for 15-time major champion Woods that saw him fail to make the US Open cut.

Curiously, the first time Woods failed to make the weekend at a major during his professional career was at the same venue 14 years ago.

AKE BUENA VISTA, Florida — Giannis Antetokounmpo's historic year earned him a historic awards sweep.

The Milwaukee forward is the NBA's Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season, receiving that award Friday. He got the Defensive Player of the Year award earlier in these NBA playoffs.

The 25-year-old Antetokounmpo becomes just the third player in league history to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season, joining only Hall of Famers Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon.

"Michael Jordan, one of the best players who's ever done it, if not the best," Antetokounmpo said. "Hakeem, a guy that I look up to, he came from where I'm from, Nigeria, where I have roots. ... Just being in the same sentence with them, that means a lot to me."

Antetokounmpo — who was in his native Athens, Greece, with his family when the award was announced — received 85 votes. There were 101 votes available; 100 from a panel of global sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league, plus one additional vote through fan balloting.

LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers got the other 16 first-place votes and finished second, and James Harden of the Houston Rockets finished third.

James, a four-time MVP, said he was not pleased initially when he saw that he finished second by such a wide margin.

"Not saying that the winner wasn't deserving of the MVP, but that (ticked) me off," James said.

He later said Antetokounmpo "had a hell of a season," but said he has some doubts about how awards get decided.

"I don't know how much we are really watching the game of basketball, or are we just in the narration mode, the narrative," James said.

Antetokounmpo's numbers this season were unprecedented, with averages of 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game. Nobody had ever averaged those numbers over a full season; Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor both had seasons where they topped Antetokounmpo's averages for points and rebounds, though both fell just shy of matching his assist average.

And the numbers weren't inflated by big minutes, either. Antetokounmpo was fifth in the NBA in scoring, second in the league in rebounding — but only 71st in minutes per game. He led the Bucks to the NBA's best record this season, before Milwaukee was ousted from the playoffs by Miami in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers resume in a ‘bubble’, Gilas faces S. Korea on Nov. 27

T

he International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced on Friday that it will do away with the home-and-away format for the remainder of its continental cup qualifiers due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

"All the games of both windows should be conducted in "bubbles", instead of home and away games, with the agreement of the host public health authorities and in compliance with FIBA health protocols," FIBA said in a statement.

FIBA will designate one host city for the bubble.

"The hosts will be decided at the regional level and will be announced in due course," it added.

FIBA said one bubble will converge one qualifying group, which means Gilas Pilipinas Men, Thailand, Indone-

sia, and South Korea, which make up Group A of the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, would be secluded in just one area.

However, FIBA also said it is possible that one bubble will have two qualifying groups in it.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced the postponement of the Feb. 20 battle between Gilas Men and Thailand at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
