Paradoxical Impressions

MONDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 6.30pm Tickets £8.00 / £4.50 concessions

TUESDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 7.30pm Tickets £8.00 / £4.50 concessions

What happens to a society when it has nowhere to turn: when people seem devoted to taking but never giving?

It is always a battle to achieve human wellbeing, but will life’s temptations lead us astray?

In this new play, Callum Murphy offers a personal exploration of the individual in society. Staged in the cells and court room of HRH Prince Charles’ favourite piece of architecture, St George’s Hall, this autobiographical piece is infused with Marxist ideologies, dark comedy and radical thinking.

Paradoxical Impressions is movement theatre investigating the psyche in relation to representations of the body. Using ladders, poles, railings and inanimate objects this performance explores physical and mental strengths and weaknesses. Watch how philosophical concepts fuse and restrict the body, unravelling space to create an impressive display of power and passion.

This performance will take place in St George’s Hall, Liverpool (Heritage Centre entrance)

This performance will take place in the Rose Theatre

greg cook Greg Cook has a deadpan style and is a master of the spoken word. A prolific writer of comedy, he has hours of tested material to draw on, but reserves the right to dish up a blistering set drawn from the morning’s papers. Religion, politics, sport, terrorism, poetry, the police, philosophy, royalty, and his long-suffering mum have all been given the Greg Cook treatment. He abandoned a law degree after 2 years to devote more time to writing and performing comedy. “Law and comedy are essentially the same gig... telling lies for money, but this way I don’t have to wear a tie.” wes zaharuk If you like to laugh you won't want to miss this zany comic in action. He has a fast paced razor wit and tornado-like approach to comedy. Wes Zaharuk credits his comic roots to his parents. They made ‘not listening’ an Olympic event. About the use of props in his performance, Wes quips “Show business sometimes lures people who didn't get enough love early in life. I feel as a child I didn't get enough unsupervised time with power tools but who has perfect parents?”

jollyboat Jollyboat are Tom and Ed, two brothers who write very energetic musical comedy. In the past year they've sold out at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and won every comedy gong-show they've entered.

martin simpson SATURDAY 29TH OCTOBER 8.00pm Tickets £12.50 / £10.50 concessions In the last two years, Martin Simpson has been busier, more successful and more visible than ever before in his 37 year career, a veritable overnight sensation at the age of 56. Televised appearances at the Albert Hall at the first ever Folk Prom, and on Later with Jools, and radio appearances with Aled Jones, Mike Harding and Simon Mayo amongst others, garnered extraordinarily good reactions. Having lived and worked in the US for 14 years he is regarded there as a guitar legend, and an enormously influential musician. “Although it’s his guitar virtuosity that’s frequently lauded, it’s as an interpreter of song that Martin Simpson really scores. Simpson delivers narratives with colour and conviction. Fittingly be-gonged several times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Martin Simpson is taking his place, not just as a hero for guitar-besotted acolytes but as one of the national treasures of English traditional music." going dark written by hattie naylor in collaboration with sound and fury TUESDAY 1ST & WEDNESDAY 2ND NOVEMBER 7.30pm Tickets £9.00 / £7.00 concessions How far can you see? A mile? A hundred miles? Or to the furthest shores of the Universe to a far away galaxy? Passionate about astronomy, Max works as the narrator at the city’s Planetarium where he challenges his dwindling audiences with the mysteries of the stars and science. But in a society polluting the night sky with light and happier to explore the heavens on a smartphone he feels increasingly out of place. When his own life takes an unexpected turn, Max discovers that seeing doesn’t necessarily bring insight and that understanding the universe requires a different kind of vision... Using the company’s innovative theatre vocabulary of immersive surround sound design, total darkness and imaginative lighting, it reawakens our wonder at the cosmos and reveals how one man’s vision becomes illuminated by darkness. “…the most brilliantly immersive piece of theatre I’ve seen all year…” The Daily Telegraph *****

freedom songs – a season of performance Die Praxis der Liebe (The Practice of Love)

Widows by Ariel Dorfman & Tony Kushner

FRIDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 7.30pm Tickets £8.00 / £4.50 concessions

MONDAY 7TH & TUESDAY 8TH NOVEMBER 7.30pm Tickets £8.00 / £4.50 concessions

This dance theatre piece assembles and reassembles snippets of choreography that emerge and re-emerge as both cohesive and chaotic: the chance moment of movements in and out of synchronicity between the pre-recorded images, improvised movement, choreographed phrases and live camera feed capture. Performers move between ‘real time’ and ‘mediated time’ appearing and reappearing in search of a narrative, perpetual repetitions induce an unbearable claustrophobia caught ‘for real’ in the spotlight. The work explores the intersection between technology and the immediacy and the intimacy of the live body in space that is constantly in negotiation with other forms of mediatised expression.

By the author of Death and the Maiden, Widows begins with a group of poor peasant women in an unnamed country washing laundry by the river. When a faceless corpse floats by a struggle begins amongst the women as to who should bury the body, each believing the man to be her missing loved one ‘disappeared’ under the corrupt regime. Invoking images of water, love, dreams and desire, this magical realist production weaves physical theatre and powerful imagery with Dorfman’s text. “A remarkable attempt to dramatise in a semi-mythical way the consequences of the recent appalling abuses of human rights” Independent on Sunday

This performance will take place at Victoria Baths, Manchester

This performance will take place in the Rose Theatre

FRIDAY 18TH & SATURDAY 19TH NOVEMBER & 7.30pm Tickets £8.00 / £4.50 concessions

Stephen Jeffreys' The Convict's Opera re-imagines the world's first ever musical, The Beggar's Opera, as a performance on board a creaking convict ship bound for Australia. To pass the time on their journey to Australia, the convicts put on John Gay's musical satire, introducing us to treacherous highwayman MacHeath and sweet Polly Peachum as they juggle love and deceit in the 18th Century criminal underworld.

Exploring the themes of the season, this production will use ‘Waterloo Cathedral’ in Liverpool as its inspiration for an exploration of man’s inhumanity to man.

“Part historical romp, part Brechtian jukebox musical” Sun-Herald, Australia

Bringing the theme of the season up to date, this devised visual theatre work looks at how we perceive oppression today through the media. Drawing on a variety of sources from Amnesty International to diaries and prison letters, this immersive environmental piece will incorporate striking visual theatre elements with live performance and video mash-ups.

Anything; noisy neighbours, speeding cars, kids hanging about on the street corners… you name it, he’ll moan about it; it’s the one thing he’s good at. He makes Victor Meldrew look like an amateur. And doesn’t his wife Lucy know it? Stuck at home with him rabbiting on every day, and nowhere to escape to… she’s housebound. And every day is starting to blend into every other… until one Halloween, when a rash act changes everything. Maybe this time Lucy sees an opportunity to alter things for good… Maybe this time Jim really does have something to be fed up about… And maybe the moaning coming from the cellar has nothing to do with the rising damp… A comedy for anyone who ever felt frustrated but didn’t know what to do once they were. From the acclaimed writer of Hull Truck hits, My Favourite Summer (“Blissfully funny” – Daily Telegraph) and Me & Me Dad (“Beautiful and tenderly written” – Yorkshire Post)

big wooden horse theatre company and brighton dome present:

the night before Christmas SUNDAY 11TH DECEMBER 2.30pm Tickets £4.50 / £16.00 family ticket (3 children & 1 adult or 2 children & 2 adults) On the night before Christmas Emily stares out of the window, hugs her teddy and waits excitedly for the morning, while in the corner a little mouse called Eddie can’t understand why only humans are allowed to celebrate and get presents. So he sets off in search of Father Christmas to find out for himself. Along the way he dodges the family cat, gets directions from a cowardly toy soldier and is given some unexpected advice from the magical fairy on top of the tree. Will Eddie get an answer? Will Emily get her wish? And what is that funny-shaped present sitting under the tree? Suitable for over three year olds and their families (contains songs and audience participation)
