women in our society have bequeathed us to date.

arch is women’s month and it goes without saying that each one of us has had numerous impactful experiences courtesy of the strong women around us. It’s a period in which we reflect on both the challenges and the contributions that women have made to this country, the region and the world beyond. With all that is happening around us – notably Covid-19 and the pursuant lockdowns – there’s never been a more befitting time to pay tribute to the legacy of achievements that

There is a rich diversity in the images of strength and character that our ladies display and showcase through their daily lives. These are apparent through leading roles being spearheaded by women in corporate Zimbabwe, such as by our very own Tjeludo Ndlovu. Similarly so, there’s a wide gamut of women in various positions of leadership such as frontline workers, media and sports personalities as well as homemakers that keep homes from literally falling apart.

This year’s UN Women’s month theme is dubbed, “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world”, sets the backdrop for a launchpad for all women. In fashion we are sticklers for detail and storytelling and so this is a story we are keen to tell. The various women we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know – and profiling – in 55 this edition, speak to a representation of our very backbone as a country. It is with this realization that we celebrate women of all walks of life and in the words of our Group CEO, Ms. Ndlovu, we thank them for being ‘the best version of themselves.’ With love from Edgars – Home of the stylish, the bold and fashionable.

ITjeludo is a qualified chartered Accountant with a passion for fashion. After 9 years at Ernest and young she left to join Edgars Stores group Financial Accountant and Company Secretary in November 2012, a position she held up until June 2016. She was then promoted to head up the Jet Chain and subsequently moved to head Edgars Chain in 2018.Tjeludo was promoted to Group Executive Officer in July 2020, overseeing the overall business functions for the Edgars Stores limited group. As the CEO she reports to the board of directors and provides leadership and strategic guidance to the group`s business units from the retail chains Jet and Edgars as well as Carousel, the manufacturing wing of the group. TM: You are the Group CEO for Edgars Stores Limited. Care to tell us what the Group comprises of? club

January - February 2021

TJ: We have two retail chains, which are Edgars and Jet Stores, and then we have the financial services arm- basically they run our credit business. We also provide insurance products, have the microfinance Club Plus and a factory Carousel Manufacturing which is located in Bulawayo. TM: Congratulations on your recent appointment. Many people would like to know how you got appointed to this position -your path to power? TJ:(responds jokingly)I don`t know if can call it my path to power. I was “recently” appointed 8 months ago. I joined EY straight after high school where I worked for just under nine years and then joined the Edgars Group in 2012 as their Group Financial Accountant. After about four years in the Finance Department I was moved up to head Jet, where I spent two years as the Chain Director. I was then moved to the Edgars

chain for 2 years before being appointed to the Group CEO. TM: As CEO what does your day look like? What does it actually entail? TJ: I remember asking my predecessor Linda that question when I started, along with other people in similar roles. Generally my day is what I make it. I’m quite a structured person. Because of the Covid pandemic, It`s typically a series of online meetings, so you can imagine I am all Microsoft Teams’d out. Initially I look at what the news is looking like; by midmorning probably I would have had 1 or 2 meetings. I will also review the sales for the previous day, we are all about turnover. I keep track of what is going on in the business and keep up to date with members of my team. So I get direct reports from people who head the various business units and support departments. By the end of the day I’m no longer CEO. TM: You transition into another Role Edgars Club @ 7 years

TJ:Yes

TM: Given your background you have obviously worked in various departments of the Edgars group - you have gained some experience you have had some high and low moments I would like to think. What particular moments stand out for you? TJ: When I moved to Edgars I worked with people who were with the business for a very long 16 time, even up to now we still have very loyal staff. A lot of the people within my department and other departments that I work(ed) with are actually older than me. Initially when I joined I wondered how I was supposed to manage all these people that are older than me. Even now as the CEO I am the youngest on the executive management team and a female which doesn`t make it any easier. The highlight has been the fact that I have managed to gain the respect of the club

January - February 2021

people who report to me despite the age difference –I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I show respect to everyone else. TM: In your career would you say there are particular moments that are career defining\ that have accumulated to bringing you to where you are today or that have led to where you are today? TJ: I suppose one that stands out stems from my ability to make tough decisions. For instance if people need to be let go of for the good of the business they have to be let go. I think that a lot of people struggle with that, given the type of environment we are operating in. When you have to tell someone “sorry we can’t keep you any longer” and you have to do it face to face, it’s not easy. I found that was one of the key things. When I had the opportunity to move from finance to operations I asked if I could decline because by nature am a

perfectionist. Though I’m an expert in shopping and I love clothes- clothing is my passion - I never worked in that environment. I understood it because I had gone through the processes but I had never actually been in it. I was not given the option to decline, and here I am today. TM: Covid 19 has brought about some changes and has affected businesses the world over in different ways. Some businesses have actually shut down. How has Covid 19 affected the business for the Edgars group and how have you navigated around it to ensure that your customers essentially get the quality service that they have come to expect from Edgars TJ: A year ago we imagined that the lockdown would be a couple of weeks but it was extended. We are effectively not an essential services provider, so when we are in lockdown we don`t trade. When we are not operating there is no revenue but the expenses still exist. There is a lot of informal sector activity in the retail Edgars Club @ 7 years

environment as well - e.g. if I am selling clothing out of a suitcase during lockdown I can easily get to my customers. But if you are Edgars or Jet you can`t do that and very quickly your customer may forget about you. We sell a significant amount on credit within the Edgars chain and little bit in Jet, and in such instances, getting people to pay can be a mission. I commend our customers who are very loyal.

18

Basically the financial strain is what has been significant. This has also been exacerbated by the fact that we have to bear the cost of testing our staff. Initially last year we had to test every single one of our staff members. Staff are human and there were genuine fears, so we’ve worked hard to allay that fear to get people into prime working mode. TM: Zimbabwe is a very volatile environment. Edgars has managed to grow, and even gone on to introduce more shops. What have you done club

January - February 2021

proactively to keep your business top of mind? TJ: Last year we introduced WhatsApp shopping, which is an interactive platform and every single branch has a dedicated WhatsApp line. Customers WhatsApp what they need and the attendant at the other end will find the product in store and engage the customer until they close that sale. Even before we started selling via WhatsApp, we were already communicating to our customers quite frequently via these store WhatsApp groups. Over and above that, we have had static websites for Edgars and Jet. We are also quite active on social media. In times of lockdown people are at home and not everyone is capable of working from home and a lot of times they are busy on social media. The messaging on social media was to try and keep them engaged and always remembering that we are still there. More recently we

launched our Online shops. Edgars and Jet both have Online stores where you purchase, settle the transaction and have the goods delivered to you. TM: We have a lot of young women and older women who are involved in business and enterprise who are reading this particular interview who look up to you. Saying she is young, she is a CEO, I would love to be like her. How do I get my business to that point or how do I become that? TJ: As an individual you must have an understanding of yourself (this is understanding what your personality is and what your strengths are) so that you can leverage on those strengths in order to succeed in your chosen career or business. From a business perspective, don`t try to be everything within the business. If you don`t know how to do the books, get somebody who can do the books for you. Get professional assistance. There is a difference in getting a person who has

been trained, they will serve you better than you doing it.

20

It`s really important to run your business as professionally as you possibly can. Be distinct. There is a distinction between your business and personal life. . For example, if you have made a sale you can’t then go to buy groceries for your home with that same money. You need to understand that there is difference between top line, which is your actual sales, and profit at the end of the day. This is why a lot of businesses fail. They don`t have basic appreciation of what profit is. The vital question is “Am I making profit?”. You might be making money but not making a profit. TM: You are young and you are in this powerful position and we are in March- women`s month. One of the major issues is talent development. Established corporates tend to not do enough to invest in female talent. club

January - February 2021

What do you suppose corporates need to do to push women in positions of leadership? TJ: An entity needs to have a robust performance management system. Only through that can you identify where talent/ potential lies. Identify the good performers, then if there is escalation that can happen, you do that. Also identify development needs through that same performance evaluation. If you decide to have a policy where you want to develop females, use what is coming out from your performance evaluation and deliberately come up with a development programme. I don`t advocate for gender quotas. TM: What is the difference between a leader/manager who has been put in this position based on the quota system with one who has been put in this

position based on performance? TJ: If you have a leader who has been put in that position of leadership on the basis of purely satisfying the quota, then the performance of that individual in that role is compromised. You won`t get what you will get out of somebody who has the relevant skills, qualifications and experience. For those who have worked for it, you are actually just as good as the next person who could have done it. I think that at the end of the day those who have been elevated on the sole basis that they are female run the risk of tarnishing the perception of what females can do or how females perform. Ultimately the results are not as good as what a male would because the male would have the relevant qualification and experience. It’s really important that one has the relevant qualifications and experience so that the next female who comes along is treated with respect. Edgars Club @ 7 years

TM: There is this thing that people normally say readers are leaders, I am curious as to what are you currently reading? TJ: Besides bedtime stories, the book that am currently reading is The Art Of Thinking Clearly by an author Rolf Dobelli. It`s a book that uses small excerpts to guide you in decision making and it challenges the way a human being typically makes decisions. TM: Why do you think it`s important it being called an ART of thinking clearly, Why do we need to think clearly now more than ever and in your role as CEO is it important to have clarity of thought in your day to day life? TJ: I think because we have so much noise, our lives are not simple. There is so much that happens around us. Whether it`s the news or social media, we live really busy lives and there is all this external influence. When it comes to making decisions the choices are so vast. So you need to cut through that club club

What would you say are the top 5) essential basics a woman needs in her wardrobe? TJ: As cliché as it sounds you need a black dress - it need not be little but a black dress that you can dress up or down or glam up. You need a pair of good fitting dark wash jeans. When I say good fitting, I mean good for your body shape- not everyone is suited by skinny or high waist jeans. You also need a pant suit with a jacket that can double up as a blazer. I always feel like you can zhoosh up any look with a blazer. You also need to invest in a top maybe a blouse or shirt that is versatile-that can transition from casual to formal. A comfortable good pair of shoes that fits right across, not necessarily pumps but heels. Preferably closed because when you wear your suit you don`t want to bare open toes. TM: People often ask this question about women in positions of club club

leadership being able to have it all. In your personal experience and from interacting with other women do you suppose women can have it all? TJ: What`s important is to define what all is. Society will say to have it all is having A,B, C. First is what is your all, once you understand what your all is then you can have it. Can it be balanced? It’s not easy juggling all the different roles. Motherhood is not easy; particularly when your children are younger and they need you more. As they grow they become more independent. When there is no online learning and Covid they spend quite a significant amount of time away at school. It’s definitely possible to have your all. TM: We are in the period or phase where we talk about self-love quite a lot and self-love to me includes me-time Am wondering if your ever take some me-time?

actually get two hours on Saturday and Sunday as me time courtesy of my daughter. Over and above that I take the whole afternoon once a month. In that time I go to the spa, spend time with friends or anything really but usually that`s the day that I go to the spa. TM: Why do you find it important for people to take some time out for themselves? TJ: Well since it`s women`s month I will say generally as a woman you have a lot on your plate and a huge 25 part your day will be about everybody else other than yourself. So you need that time where you can replenish yourself and your spirit. Also earlier I spoke about noise, it’s still relevant. There is so much noise around you during the day you even forget who you are, what makes you smile, what you would like to eat and so forth. You need that time out to just reconnect with yourselffill your cup before you fill other people`s cups. c

BEAUTY BUZZ We take a glimpse at what’s hot and happening in the world of beauty. If you want to control sweating and avoid underarm wetness, you should use an antiperspirant. But if you don't sweat excessively, and just want to limit body odor and smell fresh, deodorant is all you'll need. Of course, if you use an antiperspirant to regulate your sweating, you'll also reduce body odor — remember, odor is a byproduct of sweat and bacteria.

ALMOND OIL IN SKINCARE Almond oil mostly remains at the surface of the skin, so any effects take place there. Some believe that the oil has antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antibacterial, or anticarcinogenic properties and that it may help wounds heal. Almond oil is both a moisturizer and an emollient. Moisturizers supply water to the skin and hold it in with an oily substance. Emollients smooth the skin, filling in little gaps. Rather than adding moisture, they help the skin retain it by improving its barrier function. Many people use almond oil to help treat common skin conditions, such as dermatitis and eczema. In general, there is good evidence that moisturizers improve eczema. club club

GET SOME SLEEP Even though most of us have eighthour jobs during the day or night, it is crucial to get enough sleep to recharge the body's batteries. Six to eight hours of sleep will keep the body going throughout the day, but if you happen to feel tired at any point after coming home from work, by all means take a small nap before exercising. You should only nap for about a half hour. This will prevent you from staying up later in the night.

FITNESS BUZZ We take a glimpse at what’s hot and happening in the world of fitness.

KEEP TRACK DAILY Keeping track of how many calories you eat in a day will be helpful in planning out your physical exercising. Why are body builders' body masses so big? They plan out their meals and take in more (healthy) calories than the average person. On the other hand, losing weight and striving for a skinnier physique will involve more physical exercise than calories eaten club

Live Travel

When you choose lodging, opt for a place where air can circulate through open windows. Or stay outdoors; camping is a great idea.A room with a terrace or balcony would also be good. Seek accommodations that let you open the windows wide. When outdoors, especially if the air is moving, risk of transmission is low.Walks along the beach, a day hike in the hills or mountains, a bike ride — these are great low-risk activities. Most transmission of respiratory viruses happens indoors, so avoid activities like eating inside a restaurant, especially if it is crowded.

SAFETY WHILST TRAVELLING

Air travel requires spending time in security lines and airport terminals, which can bring you in close contact with other people and frequently touched surfaces. Most viruses and other germs do not spread easily on flights because of how air is circulated and filtered on airplanes. However, social distancing is difficult on crowded flights and sitting within 6 feet of others, sometimes for hours, may increase your risk of getting COVID-19. How you get to and from the airport, such as with public transportation and ridesharing, can also increase your chances of being exposed to the virus.Traveling on buses and trains for any length of time can involve being in crowded terminals and sitting or standing within 6 feet of others, which may increase your risk of getting COVID-19. club

Try a creative approach to maximize the functionality of your small kitchen. Find ways to create a multipurpose space with practical furniture items that are useful but can be easily stored out of the way. Some ideas include: Backless bar stools that can tuck away. Roll-out kitchen cabinets or tables. Drop-down, wall-mounted tables or cutting boards.

POT RACKS IN SMALL SPACE While most small kitchens don’t have the space required for large, rectangular pot racks, there are options for smaller spaces. Pot racks don’t have to hang from the ceiling; some can be wall-mounted, like the pegboard wall above.

UTILISING SPACE WISELY If your goal is to create a contemporary kitchen space, one of the most important design elements is minimalist, uncluttered kitchen counters. This not only looks modern, but it increases counter area, making it easier to prep and cook. The first step is to put away all small appliances and countertop items.
