First Aid Policy 2016-17 Introduction First aid can save lives and prevent minor injuries becoming major ones. St Benedict’s School has a duty to ensure that there are adequate and appropriate equipment and facilities for providing first aid. The purpose of this policy is to provide a policy statement and guidance on good practice. It has been created with reference to the Somerset County Council First Aid model and guidance. Although the main piece of first aid legislation only applies to providing first aid for employees, the school has a general duty of care to pupils, staff, parents/cares and visitors, and consider them in our assessments of first aid provision. Responsibilities St Benedict’s School will:     

make provision for first aid cover and equipment for its premises and activities require managers to assess the needs locally - based on corporate advice and a consideration of relevant factors ensure first aid personnel receive any additional training as required, e.g. where specific hazards require more specialised knowledge provide 1-day Emergency First Aider in the Workplace (EFAW) courses as part of its corporate training programme review this policy annually

The Headteacher will:   

ensure first aid assessments are performed and reviewed in the school ensure that details of first aiders are kept up to date and available (and within appropriate FO2 documentation) ensure that the tasks listed below are performed, and that the relevant staff understand their responsibilities
