ESOL COLLEGE GENERAL ENGLISH

ACADEMIC ENGLISH

Whether in Day Classes or Evening Classes, our highly qualified and skilled teachers commit themselves to supporting and encouraging you to improve your English.

We provide English tuition to help you meet the entry requirements of Universities, professional bodies (such as nursing), and immigration requirements, etc.

Day Classes

IELTS

You can start on any Monday. The first morning is spent in Orientation, where you are welcomed and given information about the school, the study programme, and have a brief English test to determine your study level. You are also shown around the school and nearby city centre. This ensures that, by the time you start your classes, you are familiar with your surroundings and have the information you need to be relaxed and ready to study. Classes range in level from Beginner to Advanced. Classes are based on a set course book, which you need to buy at the beginning of each level. Afternoon classes cover more intensively the skills of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, and also help you learn about life in New Zealand. The Friday afternoon classes are combined for a social activity. We also offer a programme of English study and preparation for High School, for those students who want to be well prepared before they start classes.

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System, and provides an internationally accepted proof of English ability. A strong focus is given to the core skills and strategies needed to deal with the variety of tasks within the Reading and Listening tests, and good quality academic writing. Speaking practice aims to give you confidence to be both fluent and accurate in your oral communication. You have two IELTS levels to choose from: INTERMEDIATE / FOUNDATION IELTS for students looking to get a score of 5 – 6, and ADVANCED IELTS for students aiming to achieve a score of 6.5 – 7 or higher. You will also benefit from regular practice tests to fine-tune your exam technique.

OET

The Occupational English Test is similar to IELTS, but is more focused on particular professions, such as nursing or other medical areas. For example, to be registered as a nurse in New Zealand, you must have either IELTS 7.0 in each band (Academic) or the OET ‘B’ grade in each band.

In Australia only OET is acceptable, so getting the OET grade gives nurses the flexibility of registering in either country. Entry to our OET course requires IELTS 6.0, so you may begin with IELTS and transfer to OET.

Business English

All business subjects have specialized vocabulary, and this course introduces students to a range of business vocabulary and concepts. Students are also introduced to the more formal style of communication in business.

STUDY TOURS

EVENING COURSES

Every year we welcome several groups of students who have come to New Zealand to study as a group. Some groups want academic English, in preparation for study in High Schools or in other courses. Other groups come on holiday, and want a combination of experiencing English in everyday use, and enjoying an EDENZ Activity programme, which can be matched to your group’s individual needs. In the past, groups have enjoyed a range of exciting tourist activities at extremely reasonable prices. The combination of study and leisure is a great way to give your group memories they will treasure for the rest of their lives.

Generally, this option is available only if you are already in New Zealand. It is suited for students who are permitted to work, and who do so during the day. For specific course details, please see our separate ESOL College brochure.

STUDENT NAME: Natalya Dergunova NATIONALITY: Russian COURSE: General English I have been studying at EDENZ Colleges for 10 months, and all this time has been fantastic. I really appreciate EDENZ teachers’ kindness, thoughtfulness and care.

TESOL COLLEGE Teaching practice

EDENZ TESOL College has provided specialised programmes for teacher training since 1994, in both Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Teaching English to Child Speakers of Other Languages (TECSOL). Our TESOL qualifications provide the skills to teach English using communicative methodology, to students whose first language is not English. The Certificate course is a basic qualification, which enables students to become effective teachers of ESOL in the classroom. The Diploma in TESOL is an advanced course for experienced teachers. EDENZ has been a validated Centre for Trinity College, London, since 1994, and now offers Trinity-approved courses for both the Certificate and Diploma several times a year. Trinity Teaching Diploma and Certificate courses are suitable for native English speakers, or those who are very fluent speakers of English, while the equivalent NZQA-approved courses meet the needs of non-native English speakers.

STUDENT NAME: Lifeng (King) Jin NATIONALITY: Chinese COURSE: Trinity TESOL Certificate The TESOL Course is pretty intense, but very interesting and helpful. I really appreciate the encouragement and help from my teachers! The memories here will never leave me.

Standards are maintained on each Trinity course by a visiting Trinity Moderator. Our TECSOL course (TESOL focused on children and young learners) also provides teacher training skills for international students wanting to teach in early childhood centres, kindergartens and/or primary schools in their home countries. This has been especially popular for young women from Taiwan, Japan, Korea and China. At EDENZ Colleges, you will learn the latest teaching techniques and theories, and how to apply them in a classroom setting.

13 COURSES

TESOL CERTIFICATE COURSE Including Trinity Certificate in TESOL option

This course is for native speakers of English, or fluent, non-native speakers. The course requirements would not be attainable by candidates with a lesser language ability.

Certificate in TESOL

The Certificate in TESOL is suitable for non-native speakers who do not have an English proficiency level high enough to satisfy Trinity entry requirements (IELTS 7.0). However, it is still a highly recognised qualification, and will provide the trainee with the skills required to teach at an excellent standard in their own country. This course can be taken either as a standalone course or in conjunction with General English Classes if these are required. All TESOL Certificate courses are offered with up to 10 start dates each year, giving a choice of 4-5-week intensive, 10-week semi-intensive, and 12-week part-time courses.

Certificate in TESOL (Group Training Tours)

With our long experience of delivering high quality TESOL courses, as well as organising programmes for Tour Groups, we can design a program to fit the required needs for group training. Students can be accommodated in homestays, or on-site at EDENZ if preferred.

of children. It trains teachers to enable children to learn English in a stimulating environment, using games and songs and other fun activities. The course can include additional English tuition, so that students who are not fluent speakers can still learn teaching techniques, while at the same time improving their own English.

TESOL DIPLOMA COURSE Including the Trinity Diploma in TESOL option

Graduates of this course are highly sought after for Senior Teaching positions, or positions in teacher training or educational management, by reputable schools all over the world. The Diploma in TESOL is a course in advanced communicative methodology skills, and is suitable for experienced teachers with at least two years’ fulltime teaching experience. The Trinity DipTESOL is recognised by the British Council as one of their preferred qualifications. Assessment is carried out over four units, which may be completed separately or together. The course may be undertaken in one year, or spread over two or three years. It requires 7-10 hours per week of distance learning, and two weeks intensive on-site theory and practice. It is ideal for the busy teacher in full-time employment. International students can also study the DipTESOL (Level 7) course as a full-time on-site course.

Certificate in TECSOL

Our TECSOL Certificate is a standard TESOL Certificate course adapted to focus on the special learning needs

For specific course details, please see our separate TESOL College brochure.

STUDENT NAME: Josephine Cox NATIONALITY: American COURSE: Trinity Diploma in TESOL I found EDENZ Colleges’ DipTESOL course was ideal to fit my needs in both the layout of the programme and the quality I was searching for. The tutorials and guidance given far surpassed the quality I expected. During the face-to-face phase, EDENZ instructors helped develop my teaching through their personal assessment, and gave a lot more of their time and resources to raise my teaching skills so that I was able to meet Trinity’s high standards. My philosophies in teaching and the methodologies in the classroom were challenged and redefined in the EDENZ Trinity DipTESOL course. I felt they were tested and stretched. Through completing this course, I am sure that I have become a far better teacher.

BUSINESS COLLEGE Since 1999, EDENZ Business College has been offering a variety of Certificates and Diplomas in both general and specialized areas of business such as Management, Marketing, and Accountancy in particular. These qualifications were first developed as pathways to University study, but in recent years they are more often used as pathways to Residence. We are constantly reviewing our programmes and courses to ensure we offer courses that are relevant to student and employment needs. Employers want people who are flexible, with good written and oral communication skills, and who are able to learn quickly on the job, and solve problems. Graduates on our courses are well equipped to do that,

with an underpinning knowledge of business principles, and an understanding of the need to cope with the constantly changing business environment.

Pathway

We try to make it as easy as possible for students to move from one course to a more advanced course or level, either within EDENZ, or in another institution. Students can start on our University Foundation Certificate and then move on to one of our Business Diplomas, or go directly to Massey University, or a degree at another institution. Alternatively, students can enter a Diploma course in our Business College, and then move on to a degree. Our Business Diplomas have formal and generous cross-credit arrangements with several institutions around the country, and our graduates have been granted credits at most Universities in New Zealand and Australia.

For specific course details, please see our separate Business College brochure.

Diploma in Business Management Class

STUDENT NAME: Alberto Rezende NATIONALITY: Brazilian COURSE: Diploma in Management (Tourism) Throughout my Diploma in Management (Tourism) course I learned valuable skills. As a result I found a job in Management for a Tour Operator, which helped me get permanent residence in New Zealand. I’ve also made friendships that will last a lifetime.

STUDENT NAME: Nataya Nakbenjaporn NATIONALITY: Thai COURSE: Diploma in e-Business The quality of a school is hard to measure, but I think EDENZ is a very good quality school. In my class, the teacher always makes the shy student become more and more sociable, the teacher is very professional and sensible. I like it very much.

NEW ZEALAND FILM ACADEMY The New Zealand Film Academy (NZFA) offers aspiring film makers the opportunity to get practical training from industry professionals. We pride ourselves on the practical approach NZFA takes. The courses run as closely as possible to a real production house, while staying within the New Zealand Qualifications Authority framework. We want students to learn by doing, rather than just sitting in a classroom. When choosing applicants we look for their enthusiasm for film, their ability to commit to their crew and projects, and a ‘can-do’ attitude. Successful applicants become team members on crews that script, shoot and produce interesting and creative short films, under the guidance of tutors who have their own accomplished and ongoing careers within the film industry. For more information and for answers to commonly asked questions, please visit us at: www.nzfilmacademy.com

Intensive Film Course (6 weeks) This course is a short introduction to film making. It is very intensive, based primarily on the first six weeks of the 16-week course. In most cases, it is necessary to work over weekends and after hours.

Certificate in Applied Film Making and Television Production Course (16 weeks) This is an intensive full-time course which studies the film-making process. The course duration is geared to give students enough ‘hands on time’ to hone their practical and creative skills. It provides the right environment for students to explore and create highly entertaining, imaginative productions.

STUDENT NAME: Anthony Butters NATIONALITY: New Zealander COURSE: Certificate in Applied Film Making and Television Production Course I’ve been out of the Academy less than three months and already, the skills and work ethic developed there have helped me get my first job on Spartacus, and even direct my own independent feature film. The course certainly lived up to its name, with 16 extremely intensive weeks, where I had the opportunity to network with other aspiring film makers, learn the industry from professionals and develop new skills. I would recommend this course to anyone who is serious about a career in film and is just looking for the right place to start.

We are constantly updating our software and equipment in order to stay ahead of industry trends, technology, and techniques. We also use local companies, suppliers, and associations to keep us relevant, and to provide our school and our students with the very best advice.

NZFA Graduate wins Best Director award in Las Vegas

Danny Phillips, Kiwi film-maker and Magician, and a graduate of our May 2009 intake, recently submitted a film to the Las Vegas Magic Film Festival, and won the ‘Best Director’ award, along with his lead actor winning the ‘Best Actor’ as well! “Winning Best Director and Best Actor awards made it all worthwhile, but at the end of the day even without them, I had a fantastic time making the film.” Congratulations Danny, looking forward to the next one!

You have several accommodation options available when you study at EDENZ Colleges. All of them are designed to help you feel settled, safe and ready to study.

EDENZ APARTMENT

Wake up to study by staying in a shared apartment on the top two levels of our Airedale Street Campus. It’s a great way to save on the cost of public transport and never be late for class. Two Apartment supervisors are in residence 24/7 to maintain student safety and monitor behaviour. Accommodation residents have access to public telephones (national and international calls) and the internet (Wi-Fi and Desktop PC internet data plans available to purchase at reception).

can range from $150-$500 per week, depending on the location and the number of students sharing the cost. This price does not include electricity, phone or food. Shared accommodation

HOMESTAY

Homestay is the best way to start your stay in New Zealand, even if your plans are to become independent or to go flatting with friends. Starting with a homestay allows you to adjust to the New Zealand way of life, familiarise yourself with the transport systems, and discover the options available. Homestay also offers you a chance to practice your English, and provides that extra care needed while you settle into a new culture. All of our homestays are checked carefully and must pass a detailed evaluation process.

HOSTELS

There are several hostels in central Auckland, ranging from $130-$200 per week. This price does not include food. It is important to remember that while staying in a hostel offers more independence than a homestay, it requires students to look after themselves and be disciplined in their study and attendance. This type of accommodation is recommended for more mature students. Students can apply for hostel accommodation placement in the same way as for a homestay.

FLAT & APARTMENT

Flats range from $130-$250 per person per week, and apartments

For General English, we accept all levels including Beginners. However, it is important that students are familiar with the alphabet and have some basic reading skills before they arrive. Other courses have specified entry requirements – see individual courses for details.

HEALTH AND TRAVEL INSURANCE

By law, all international students need to have health and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand, whether on a Student Visa or a Visitor Visa. You must show us proof of your insurance on your first day at school. You can arrange your own insurance from your home country, or we can arrange it for you in New Zealand.

APPLYING FOR A VISA

Before you arrive in New Zealand to begin your studies at EDENZ Colleges, you will need to make sure you have a current passport before applying for the correct visa. International students should make sure they allow plenty of time for the visa application process. If you are studying for 12 weeks or more, you will need a Student Visa, otherwise a Visitor Visa is required. Some countries have an agreement with the New Zealand Government for visa-free entry. For more information please visit the NZ Immigration website at www.immigration.govt.nz Once you are in New Zealand it is easy to extend your visa, and we will help you do this. Also, on completion of one of our Diplomas, you are entitled to a one-year open work permit (Graduate Work Search Visa) and we will help you apply for this. We offer Job Search Support to help students who are entitled to work.
