State of the School Dear Eden Community, We are happy to present the Eden Christian Academy 2019-2020 Annual Report and are grateful to convey details affirming the strong state of the school. The purpose of this report is to provide you, one of our stakeholders, the information and insight you need to confidently advance in meaningful partnership with us. Whether you are a parent, a donor, an employee, or a prospective Eden family, as you review the status of the school outlined in these pages we ask that you engage with ECA in three distinct ways. • • •

Join us in worshipping God for His provision for His school. Pray over opportunities for growth which you may identify in these pages. Determine how you will contribute to the maturation and innovation that will become the content of next year’s annual report and the testimony of what God is doing through Eden Christian Academy.

Although a number of our families were unable to re-enroll due to the uncertainties surrounding the pandemic we have experienced growing enrollment since June. We have welcomed new families who are sharing in the blessings, labors, and costs of our ministry as well as the return of some of our families. Many joyful reunions have happened! This rebound in enrollment, along with God’s provision for Eden families despite the trials of 2020, has placed the school in a very stable position. We are grateful that this enables us to hold our tuition increase for 2021-2022 to 3% for the second year in a row. This allows us to simultaneously: • • • • •

invest in more competitive compensation and benefits to our faculty and staff expand educational services to our students by providing math and reading specialists grow our elective offerings strengthen our athletics programs with full-time administrative leadership cultivate non-tuition support for Eden’s continued growth through full-time leadership for our development office

In the face of challenges and difficulties, our resolve to provide a Christ-centered, biblically-rooted, excellent education of the whole student in authentic partnership with parents is stronger than ever. The evidence can be seen in the determined tenacity of faculty, staff, parents, students, and supporters of our school in the midst of a challenging year in which we have been blessed to operate full-time on campus since August. The grace, generosity, and exemplary service regardless of great external negativity and hardship has been and is bringing glory to God and blessing to our children. The information in this report primarily covers fiscal year 2019-2020 with some information from the 2020-2021 school year. As we compiled this report, we truly endeavored to provide information that honors your trust, investment, and your needs as a meaningfully engaged partner. To the extent that this report reaches our goal, we thank God. To the extent that more information is needed, we ask you to let us know what would be most helpful to you. We are always ready to listen and to share about God’s school. For Our Students for His Glory,

Paul Q. Fisher Head of School

Commitment to Academic Excellence

Important new initiatives began in August 2020 expanding services to our students and enhancing the excellence of their academic experience. • An elementary school literacy initiative was launched to implement new research-based English and Language Arts (ELA) practices to enhance student development in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking. Literacy blocks were expanded across all elementary grades, and literacy integration implemented across content areas. • A research-based, data-driven, systematic intervention program was implemented for grades K6 to prevent, detect, and address student deficiencies in reading and math proficiency, ensuring that all Eden students reach their Godgiven potential. • A new history program was implemented in grades K-6, placing God’s Kingdom at the center of our chronological study of history so that all history is viewed through the lens of the sovereignty of our

God. The program aims to give students an internal compass for their place in the world God has made and an imagination for how they will participate in its redemption. • A Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) integrated program is serving our students at both elementary campuses on a weekly basis. The goal of the program is to develop logic and reasoning skills, to inspire students to become independent thinkers, and encourage creative problem solving. Topics include design thinking, computer programming, technology, engineering, robotics, 3D printing, and other creative integrated learning experiences. Inquiry, collaboration, and processbased learning are the heart of the STEAM approach.

Additionally, from 2018-2020, upper school course offerings have been expanded in science, social science, technology, business, to include Engineering, Environmental Science, Sociology, HS Coding, MS Coding, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Business Law.

Campus Life Builds Community Weekly Chapels with Purpose While classrooms engage the mind of the student with scripture and the Bible, weekly chapel engages the heart. Here students worship as a corporate body and hear the same message. Itʼs a place of unity, celebration and where God speaks life and the truths of the Bible to our students.

Spiritual Enrichment Week This important week, set aside each year in February, is intentionally developed to present interactive opportunities for students to grow in their faith. This Eden tradition engages both the heart and mind of students through special chapels, guest speakers, activities, and service projects.

Glorifying God Though The Arts • Member of Pennsylvania Music Educators Association • K-6 students participate in weekly art and music classes. • K-6 band, chorus, art exploration, and chimes are offered as additional opportunities to explore and develop an appreciation for and skill in the arts. • Upper school offers 11 distinct courses in the performing and studio arts • Senior Trey Tillotson earned the PA Music Educators Association All-State first chair for clarinet. • Over the past two years, more than 150 upper school students participated in the annual musicals.

Spiritual Life Retreats Four impactful opportunities are offered for students in 5th/6th grades, 7th/8th grades, 9th/10th grades, and 11th/12th grades.

Service That Advances the Kingdom 150 upper school students collaborated with Urban Impact and connecting with students at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary through a pen pal program.

Godʼs Truth for Todayʼs Issues The upper school hosted Silver Ring Thingʼs Unaltered purity and awareness program for students and their parents.

Excellence in Academic Competitions

Glorifying God Through Athletics Mr. Mark Ackerman joined the ECA staff as our full-time athletic director to enhance our discipleship focus in athletics, invest in coach recruitment, development, and support, and grow development operations for team resources and facilities. • Nearly 2/3 of Eden upper school students play in at least one of 9 sports across 31 teams. • ECA is a member of the Western PA Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) • State playoff qualifiers in 2019 and 2020 in Boys Cross Country, Boys Basketball, and four individual cross country runners • WPIAL Section Championships 2019 and 2020 in Boys Cross Country • WPIAL playoff qualifiers 2019 and 2020 in Golf, Boys Baseball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Girls Volleyball • Five Cross Country athletes were individual WPIAL qualifiers in 2019 and 2020

Many parents and staff contributed to our initial mission-focused survey program, and the results were shared in January 2021. We have engaged the Center for the Advancement of Christian Education (CACE) to provide counsel in this process.

We acknowledge and greatly appreciate all of our stakeholders for their contributions throughout the process. We look forward to our continued partnership in faithful service to the Lordʼs vision for His school.
