For the July Edition, CVLUX features El Encanto for the Travel & Leisure Issue.
The summer months start, and we all pack up for the coast. Many of us make the short journey to Carmel or take an extended holiday to Newport Beach. But few of us think of vacationing in what is fondly referred to as the “Jewel of California”, Santa Barbara.
This July Edition is special to me for a myriad of reasons. I have been fortunate to call the Central Valley home for the past 25 years or so. Yet Santa Barbara is where I spent my childhood, and this trip brought back so many happy memories for me, and I am so excited to share it all with you in our premier travel issue.
From wine tasting and spa days, to day trips you can take with your whole family, we have you covered! There is so much to see and do in this coastal city, and I hope you are inspired to visit and experience the vibrant life this area has to offer.
This issue also marks something else—the start of the Luxury Awards nomination process. Nominations are currently open and will remain open all month long. You can nominate your favorite businesses online at www.cvlux.com. Due to so many requests, we have added a few new award categories to show our appreciation for all the businesses that make the Central Valley so unique.
So please, relax, unwind, and dive into this latest issue.

Afternoon tea is so much more than sitting and sipping. In a world that encourages us to constantly be on the go, tea begs us to slow down, preferably with those who matter most. Wait for it to steep, be patient as it cools to drinking temp, take the time to savor every sip, all with someone you care for deeply.

Prepare to be swept away by the magic that is El Encanto, a Belmond Hotel, as you step into its enchanting world of luxury and charm. With its fairytale-like setting, El Encanto captivates guests with its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, lush gardens, and twinkling lights that dance among the trees. There isn’t a bad angle on the entire property, whose meandering pathways encourage guests to explore its quaint layout. From the subtly decadent accommodations and divine food and drinks to its otherworldly spa and unrivaled hospitality, you’ll never want to leave the grounds.
Imagine waking up to the melodious tunes of birdsong as you peer out from your cozy, elegantly appointed room. As you make your way through the winding paths, you’ll stumble upon hidden nooks and seven acres of gardens—seek out the centuries-old lily pond, a wishing well that is older than the building itself, and the chef’s garden. Cuddle up next to one of the bonfires, some of which are lit inside artfully repurposed buoys surrounded by Adirondack chairs. Rain or shine, the grounds beg you to take them in.
From the moment you arrive at this hillside perch, all your needs are anticipated, and you get the sense that everyone there is eager to make this particular stay the most exceptional visit you’ve ever experienced. Yet the property has served a few other purposes over the years. Originally, it was a normal school for girls. Later, it became housing for the professors and faculty at the University of Santa Barbara, which used to be located just across the street. Today, the revered hotel—hailed as one of California’s greatest—includes 92 suites, bungalows, and rooms.
On New Year’s Eve 1918, El Encanto opened its doors and became the original Hollywood getaway, hosting the most illustrious names on the silver screen. Currently, it stands as one of the most celebrated resorts on the West Coast after being lovingly restored to its 1920s glory. All of the buildings that comprise El Encanto don the original Spanish-colonial and Californian craftsman styles of architecture with seamlessly integrated modern additions, such as a zero-edge outdoor pool and boutique spa.
For those seeking ultimate relaxation, The Spa at El Encanto offers a haven of tranquility. Let the skilled hands of expert therapists transport you to a world of serenity and bliss as soothing melodies float through the air. Spa treatments are available by appointment only; however, The Fitness Studio is open around the clock. The Spa Reception and Boutique are open daily, allowing spa-goers the opportunity to purchase the carefully selected and exclusive products available on-site.
The Spa uses skincare products from A-list facialist Linda Ross, whose exclusive residency at El Encanto ensures celluloid-worth skin even after leaving this serene sanctuary. Having built her Beverly Hills-based clientele for almost 30 years by referral only, her skincare products are exclusively available for the public to experience and purchase through the elite spas she partners with. “This provides the spas using my products a unique experience to their guests and separates them from other hotels in the area,” says Linda Ross.
The most recent addition of Linda Ross Beverly Hills offerings at El Encanto is the newly launched Illustrious Escape Beauty Journey (IEBJ). Linda noticed a trend in luxury hotel spas shifting to longer treatments performed in a variety of steps; however, she wanted to create something that wouldn’t limit clients immediately thereafter. “My skincare philosophy is based on working synergistically with the skin, eliminating recovery down time while providing immediate, stellar results. This allows hotel guests the ability to enjoy all of the experiences offered [at El Encanto] without any photo sensitivity issues,” she reveals of the 2-hour treatment, which is the only one she will come to perform personally for clients through her residency.
The IEBJ begins by the client lying atop an infrared-heated gemstone Chakra Mat on the reclining bed where the treatment is performed. This treatment aids mental clarity, relieves tension, and stimulates relaxation. The Linda Ross microderm scrub reveals fresh new epidermis layers in preparation for better product absorption. Custom-blended therapeutic-grade certified-organic essential oils are then applied with steam. In addition, an LED Red Light Therapy and MicroCurrent Glove treatment really sets this experience apart, as Linda’s specialized anti-aging privy solutions combined with colloidal silver stimulate facial muscles, deliver lift, increase collagen production, minimize fine lines, and magnify the depth of eminent glowing skin.
An application of microderm scrub on the feet removes dull skin before a tranquil foot massage. “Many facial treatments today forget about the hands and feet. I wanted to give them nurturing attention using collagen mitts/gloves, followed with the application of my Epidermal Growth Factor Body Lotion containing many certified-organic therapeutic-grade essential oils.” The Illustrious Escape Beauty Journey concludes with an extensive face, neck, and shoulder massage, imbedding more age-defying properties into the epidermis, leaving the skin beaming and spirits awakened. “The results from IEBJ should last many days. Using my 4-Steps homecare program also helps maintain the results achieved,” all of which are used in this treatment.
The IEBJ is Linda’s second body-focused treatment. “Of the signature indulgences offered on the El Encanto hotel spa menu, the body regeneration treatment is the first treatment I designed for the body,” Linda explains. “It was important this treatment stand out by the results achieved, have an effect on all of our senses, and make you feel great! … I’m proud to share this treatment is a top-selling service at the El Encanto hotel and am thankful to have the support from the General Manager Janis Clapoff, Spa Director Rebecca Ruiz, and the therapists. Creating a new treatment takes a lot of people to execute and make it successful. El Encanto has a wonderful team supporting me and it’s a blessing.”
Much of the extraordinary experience cultivated at El Encanto can be attributed to the people who work there. General Manager Janis Clapoff is known for her handwritten notes and the lovely in-room gifts she leaves for guests—thoughtful is an understatement. Brand Marketing & Communications Manager Hima Duggirala does so much more than marketing, making sure even the minute details of one’s stay are seamlessly pressed out; she makes you feel like she is there just for you. They work tirelessly to ensure every visit to the hotel is memorable and seek out only the best products and people to constantly improve upon perfection and better enhance the El Encanto experience.
Wellness Week at El Encanto provides patrons the opportunity to participate in exclusive experiences, such as Linda’s, many of which can be personally tailored. The “Rooted in Nature” Wellness Week in collaboration with PALMA Colectiva—who also showcased the practitioners—took place from June 5th to 8th with a curated selection of garden-inspired wellness experiences that invited guests to revitalize themselves within the serene setting of El Encanto’s lily pond. Furthermore, wellness-geared, plant-based menus were available for both lunch and dinner at the Spa Garden, and each day, a unique wellness event was scheduled. Coupled with El Encanto’s inviting atmosphere, the spirit of well-being and tranquility is utterly undeniable all around the grounds during this week especially.
This summer’s line-up included Breathwork and Sound Alchemy with Lara Elliott and Dorothea Barth, Grounding Kundalini with Siddhi Ma, Rose Plant Spirit Immersion with Evan Rilling and Mar Harrsen as well as a complimentary Open House at The Spa. For an ultra-personalized experience, scheduling a Live Mandala Reading with renowned healing expert Renate Hume is an encounter you’ll never forget. Renate’s calming aura and skilled insight allows one to look back while dreaming forward, using the art of Mandala to help guide the journey of understanding oneself. You won’t want to miss the next Wellness Week at El Encanto, scheduled to be held between the 25th and 28th of September.
No matter where you are on the hotel grounds, tea is thoughtfully present. “Botanica is a new in-house branding theme for El Encanto’s tea journey, including the Afternoon Tea, Arrival Welcome Tea, in-room amenities, in-room dining, fitness tea, and spa tea,” shares Hima Duggirala. These tea blends are all meticulously crafted by Zhena Muzyka, the tea lady behind Magic Hour based in nearby Ojai. Upon check-in, the Queen of Enchantment tea greets guests. In The Spa, a beautifully displayed decanter is at the ready with visually striking Gemstone Teas, which are provided to enjoy after each treatment.
Yet the ultimate brewed experience is El Encanto’s Botanica Afternoon Tea. “As for the design of the teas,” Hima elaborates, “we purchased the entire Astrology line of teas (as is), her bottles, and her labels from Zhena. We then rebranded the Afternoon Tea and the Tea Journies as ‘Botanica’ to be specific to Santa Barbara and El Encanto’s gardens, and each tea journey helps celebrate the power of connection and invites you to experience this modern ritual, steeped in discovery and enchantment.” Served in the dining room from Monday to Thursday, Botanica Afternoon Tea is perfect for milestone moments and casual afternoons alike.
There are four parts to this afternoon tea service. It begins with teas featuring Astrobotanical Infusions, which are custom-blended teas, herbs, and adaptogens designed with your zodiac’s sun sign in mind. Up next are Savory Delights, an array of colorful and equally tasty tea sandwiches, each unique because the breads used feature colorful ingredients such as beetroot, turmeric, and charcoal. Seasonal Scones in Buttermilk, Fresh Rosemary, and Lemon Zest varieties are served warm with strawberry basil jam, clotted cream, and butter with local honey. Additionally, five types of Divine Desserts come in bite-size form.
Another uber special dining experience at El Encanto is the Bellini Brunch, served Sundays on the Terrance. Bottomless Bellinis or mimosas featuring Moët Chandon with unrivaled views of the Santa Barbara coastline and live jazz take center stage. Freshly pressed juices have the option to add CBD. A Sunrise Bakery Basket comprised of ciabatta, caramelized onion focaccia, jalapeño bacon scone, and cheese stick, for example, is presented with butter, salt, and paprika. More to be shared is an assortment of starters such as smoked salmon, mini versions of the infamous bagels from Jack’s Bistro, cream cheese, tiger shrimp cocktail, avocado, heirloom cherry tomatoes, and berries. Whichever succulent Plate and Sweet Treat option you select for the main course and following dessert, you surely won’t be disappointed.
Dining at El Encanto transcends mere sustenance. Indulge your senses with the tantalizing scents and flavors that waft from the resort’s delightful restaurant under the direction of Executive Chef Conny Andersson. A passion for artisanal ingredient and exceptional flavors reflects the region’s culinary abundance. Moreover, every dining location has an ocean view. The ambient Dining Room and alfresco Terrace ensure the perfect setting for any meal of the day. The Rivera Lounge, Bar, and Patio are the ideal retreat for a drink, gourmet snack, and light bite. Even in-room dining is outstanding and exquisitely presented.
El Encanto promises a whimsical escape like no other. Every team member makes sure even the smallest request is tended to with extraordinary care and attention to detail. They have thought of everything you may need in your hillside home away from home. If you’d prefer a different pillow than what’s already piled high on your bed, the Pillow Menu will ensure the soundest of sleep. Furthermore, each room comes equipped with complementary beverages to start and end your day, not to mention a handful of snacks at the ready, just in case you don’t want to leave. Besides, electric bikes are at the ready for when the mood to venture out takes hold. And when you must finally depart this fairytale, bottled water and house-made granola await you in your car’s console. You just know you must return soon; El Encanto will surely put a spell on anyone who steps foot on its enchanted grounds.
Whether you’re a wine aficionado or a novice, endless tasting options abound within Santa Barbara’s numerous boutique wineries. For this particular outing, the CVLUX team visited four sites in one day. Ambitious? Maybe… But one thing is certain: each of these stops is worthy of a separate trip in and of itself. Stagecoach Co. Wine Tours, Inc. did a wonderful job providing transportation to, from, and between—services such as theirs are ideal for those looking to hit more than one tasting room or estate in a single sweep. They’ll even curate a tasting tour specifically tailored to your group, saving you the guesswork when it comes to choosing which wineries are best to visit. Their vehicle offerings make up the largest wine tour-only fleet in Santa Barbara County. Stagecoach’s drivers are more than just drivers; as they share their profound knowledge about the region and wines, in particular, guests feel like they are truly getting to know the area, not just passing through. Ultimately, Santa Barbara wine country will captivate oenophiles of every caliber with its exceptional wines, warm hospitality, and a genuine love for the art of winemaking.
Artiste Winery Tasting Studio stands as a testament to the exquisite marriage between the worlds of fine art and winemaking. Artiste Winemaker Bion Rice and his wife Anna, Artiste’s Creative Director, have cultivated an exceptionally unique experience with their studio in the picturesque town of Los Olivos. He is what’s inside the bottle, and she’s the outside of it. Stepping into this charming establishment, visitors are greeted with an immersive experience. You can taste, shop, blend, paint, pair, or simply marvel at the vibrant gallery space adorned with captivating artworks that reflect the spirit of the wines. As you take in this organically sophisticated studio space, you will certainly note an undeniable and remarkable fusion of the craftsmanship of winemaking with the creativity of painting.
At its core, Artiste is an Impressionist winery, and that rustic yet defined nature can be felt in the classic “Artiste” mouthfeel and long finish for which its wines are known. “It’s all about creating that style—the house style. When you’re creating a house style, you’re basically saying to your customers, ‘We’re going to make this same kind of flavor profile that represents what we love.’ So that consistency is what people fall in love with,” Bion explains of what it means to seek out a winemaker whose palette is true to one’s own. “If that palette is aligned, then that’s what you’re really buying.” The assemblages Bion crafts are dangerously drinkable and will instantly elevate any occasion with their presence.
Bion is gifted with blending wines, a passion he discovered while working in his family’s winery, Sunstone. He has also always been fascinated with Impressionism and admires today’s contemporary movement of this style. Artiste marries these two great loves. “We’re art-inspired wines,” Bion asserts of the artwork referenced. “I basically look at that, and all of the use of color, the composition, the story behind the piece, and the artist’s preferences—a lot of that drives the blends for the inside of the bottle.” Anna further elaborates, “The art and the wine are actually totally connected.” She emphasizes that “it really does start with the artwork,” and the blend follows.
Artiste was one of the wineries—if not the first—to start using art solely as their label. “We kind of gave up on the front label branding because we really wanted the wine bottle to frame the art,” Anna reveals of what it took to make the bottle be the brand. Each bottle features a work of art as its front label. Said work is the wine’s name, which can be found on the back label, where the artist and artwork medium is listed alongside the blending ratios. Also provided is the year it was bottled, as well as an “Optimal till” note, informing people of the best timeframe in which to drink each wine.
Artiste provides patrons with the opportunity to blend their own wine in the studio. For this experience, a blending placemat provides space for three different baseline wines. Once those varietals have been analyzed for their aromas, flavors, and mouthfeel, they are scored. This helps determine the manner in which you go about the ratio of wines blended in a graduated cylinder. You can test up to six blends. All blends are then analyzed and scored again before the highest-scoring wine is bottled and corked right in from of you. You even get to draw your own label and name the wine yourself.
At Artiste, wine is a medium, just like a canvas. By embracing this philosophy and infusing each bottle with the spirit of art, Artiste’s wines not only delight the taste buds but also evoke emotions, tell stories, and spark conversations. One way of experiencing the variety of wines at Artiste is by beginning with a traditional tasting of whites. The private blending session then allows one to taste various reds. A macaroon pairing with rosé is the perfect finishing touch. For this component, Anna serves her favorite macaroons, which come from Duverger. “They’re exclusive to us here,” she’s proud to say in this regard.
Every bottle of Artiste is crowned with a colorful, coordinating wax seal, just like how it used to be done before modern bottling. Such a practice demonstrates Artiste’s commitment to hand-made wines, which are hand-inspected before being hand-dipped. For those looking to collect these beautiful vessels, you can return an empty Artiste wine bottle to the studio to have it repurposed into a candle. Beyond the tasting room, Artiste hosts a variety of events, including wine release parties, art exhibitions, and educational workshops, all of which celebrate the intersection of wine and art, fostering a sense of community and creativity among wine enthusiasts, artists, and connoisseurs alike.
Artiste Winery Tasting Studio offers a welcoming and immersive tasting experience, engaging both the eyes and the taste buds. It has become a beloved destination in Los Olivos, drawing wine lovers, art aficionados, and curious travelers from near and far. Bion and Anna’s shared passion for both wine and art has allowed them to create an enchanting space where visitors can explore, appreciate, and be inspired by the artistic expressions captured in each bottle. As you raise a glass of Artiste wine, you become a part of this artistic journey. Ultimately, Artiste is where wine and art collide in a masterpiece of flavors.
When visiting Grassini Family Vineyards’ estate winery, one cannot help but feel this family’s deep roots in both their land and winemaking approach. Now in the hands of the third and fourth generations, Larry Grassini’s wife Sharon and daughters Katie, Corey, Mandy, and Molly are actively supporting this enriching endeavor. At Grassini Family Vineyards, the extended family’s dedication to beauty, hard work, and a memorable sense of place converge, resulting in truly special wines bearing their family’s label. It is their hope that you find delight in the wine’s poetry, sense of tradition, and connection to place when shared with loved ones.
Larry’s grandfather, Articondo Grassini, was more religious about gardening than attending church on Sundays. Having immigrated from Pisa, Italy to the United States in the early 1900s with his wife Afiora Tinucci, Articondo cherished his new home. He would spend the day of rest making ravioli—with a glass of wine (or two…)—for that evening’s dinner using his garden’s bounty. Chickens used to roam his yard—in a delightful homage, industrious fowl now roam the vineyards, providing sustainable fertilization. Larry’s father, Leo Peter Grassini, shared the same passion for gardening, which provided the family with much of their food. This cherished tradition has been lovingly passed down over generations, leading to the establishment of a vegetable garden at the vineyard.
All of Grassini’s wines are estate grown on the property’s roughly 210 acres of land. “That means we don’t purchase grapes. Everything is grown on our property here,” explains Dean McKillen, Estate Director. Dean is married to Katie, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer at her family’s winery. “Just short of 50 acres are planted for all Bordeaux varietals,” he highlights. “We don’t do a stand-alone yet, but we’re hoping to in the next couple years,” shares Katie. “My parents bought the land back in the ’80s, and there was nothing out here. This whole valley was just basically all horse breeding facilities, cattle, really no vineyards at all. And then, starting in around 2001, my parents started looking around, going, ‘Well, what about if we planted some vines and see what we can do with the property?’ That’s where this all started.” Katie’s parents began planting in 2003.
Construction of the winery building ran from 2007 to 2010. “They wanted to be as sustainable as possible, not just with the plantings, but also the building itself,” says Katie of her parents’ grand vision. “So all of the timber that you see in here and on the outside of the building, it’s all reclaimed wood from either abandoned gold mines in Colorado, or these big old lumberjack racks that they used to get supplies back and forth on the Columbia River up north,” she divulges while pointing to the interior beams. “These were underwater for about 150 years, and that kept them in perfect condition … That’s one of the ways that we’ve kind of tried to make the least dent on the earth as possible.” The walls are poured-in-place concrete throughout, which keeps the air consistently cool even on warmer days. Stained glass windows of the Grassini family crest also dot the décor.
While simply walking around the estate, guests are transported into a unique world where they are invited to slow down and take in the remarkable surroundings. It feels like you’re enveloped in your own personal valley. Picturesque hills roll with rows upon rows of vines in a juxtaposition of organic alignment. Every angle is so scenic that it’s easy
to see why the Grassini estate has made appearances on reality television shows such as The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and a grand finale of The Amazing Race. “The first person through the thing got the million dollars here at the pond that year,” recollects Katie of the finish line. The very same pond was also the backdrop for some classic Real Housewives drama when the ladies visited the estate.
In line with Katie’s parents’ sustainable ideal, even the pond serves as a reusable water source for the estate. Rambling Valley Oak trees, many of which are hundreds of years old, are meticulously preserved, exceptional specimens—in fact, testing at the University of California, Davis revealed their acorns to be some of the best DNA they’d seen. The symbolism of oaks is poetic in and of itself. Much like a family tree, each is home to numerous bird species on the property. The Grassini label also has a handful of Easter eggs within it. “The 5G is for the five Grassini girls in Larry’s life. So my father-in-law, his wife, and his four girls came up with this.” On the symbolism, Dean further explains, “There are these little birds, representative of the girls.”
“When we do dinners together, Katie always talks about the family story and I’m like, ‘So about the wine…’” Dean jokes. Together, the couple takes guests through the complete experience at Grassini. There are two ways to visit Grassini Family Vineyards. The Tasting Room in Santa Barbara welcomes people daily. Appointments are required at the Estate Winery in Santa Ynez, which is open from Thursday to Monday. There, semi-private and private experiences are offered. Private tastings are usually guided by Dean and are conducted at a few spots around the property. “We just sit at that table and we chat all about wine and it’s fun!” he relishes. Each bottle has either Katie’s or Larry’s signature on it, as well as a bottle number. Estate-sourced, sustainably farmed, familyowned, and hand-crafted, you can taste the tradition in every bottle that comes from Grassini Family Vineyards.
Named after the local folklore surrounding Nojoqui Falls, Brave & Maiden Estate combines the allure of a historic tale with the delights of a premier winery. Stepping through this exclusive winery’s gates leads visitors into a world where stories come to life and exceptional wines await. Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, a lover of legends, or just searching for a memorable experience, Brave & Maiden Estate offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and exquisite flavors that will enchant your senses and create lasting memories.
“The original 46 acres were planted by the previous owners, the Harmon family,” recounts Philip Dean Lighthouse, Assistant Tasting Room Manager at Brave & Maiden. “The Harmons had built that home in the late ’80s, early ’90s and got into the grape game here in ’90s—that’s when they planted 46 acres of Merlot and Syrah, which they were just selling back to Sunstone mainly.” Now, there are 12 different varietals growing there. The Harmons eventually sold the property to Rizal Risjad, who acquired the property in 2010 along with friend and business partner, Jason Djang.
Together, the Risjads and Djangs envisioned producing the finest estate-grown wines possible from this singular source, which resulted in Brave & Maiden’s 2011 vintage. They’ve been making wines ever since. “But we didn’t open our tasting room, production facilities, offices, and barrel room until 2018,” Philip details. “So, 2018 is when we really got going with our tastings and just having people come visit us on the property here.” When they opened their doors in September 2018, they became a fully estate-grown bottle. “All of the processes of grape growing into bottling happen on-site, which is kind of unique, and we’re making about 6,500 cases of wine right now, so small production.”
Brave & Maiden’s vintage is largely attributed to the combined efforts of Winemaker Victor Robaglia, Director of Winemaking Joshua Klapper, and Cellar Master Geoffrey Boyd. Victor happened upon Brave & Maiden, coming on first as harvest intern and eventually working his way through the winery’s ranks. “He’s just brought this really great, kind of old-world French influence to our lovely California grapes,” imparts Philip. “Our director of winemaking, our former winemaker,” Philip shares of Joshua, “has kind of taken over the realm as the overall director of the winemaking processes … And then we have our cellar master, Geoff Boyd, who’s been around a bunch of different wineries in the area, rounding out our winemaking team.”
The label’s name pays homage to a Native American tale of tragedy. Similar to the story of Romeo & Juliet and inspired by a local legend surrounding Nojoqui Falls, which dates back to the early 1900s, the “Legend of Nojoqui” is a bit of local folklore that revolves around two lovers: the maiden Nojoqui, daughter of the village chief, and the injured brave whom she finds in the wilderness and nurses back to health. The two fall in love, which is forbidden, so they run away, only to be found out and chased by those trying to separate them.
When they find themselves atop a cliff with a stream flowing over into a waterfall, the brave and the maiden are faced with an insurmountable dilemma and ultimately decide to stay together at any cost. The lovers both fall to their deaths, where they can be together for eternity. The waterfall is artfully symbolized on Brave & Maiden’s label and again
over the library fireplace in the tasting room, where a hand-commissioned piece of installation art made of hand-cut porcelain by Carlie Stracka takes center stage.
A variety of experiences allow oenophiles to enjoy Brave & Maiden in several settings. At Home Virtual Tastings are led by an Estate Host, who guides everyone in the household party through a virtual tasting session of three matching bottles shipped directly to one’s doorstep. A Seated Tasting includes wines that are estate-grown and of limited production. For the Tour & Tasting, visitors stroll around the vineyard and winery with a glass of wine in hand as a guide shares the winegrowing and winemaking process with those looking to get more behind-the-scenes knowledge in addition to the Seated Tasting.
Any group tasting or daytime event at Brave & Maiden makes for a memorable affair. Experiences for one to six guests may be made for seated and tour-style tastings. For larger parties, groups may reserve either the Courtyard or Library. The Courtyard is surrounded by olive trees, where contemporary furnishings comfortably seat as many as 20 guests. In the Library, the cozy ambiance and warmth of the fireplace is situated to give the best views of the vineyard and property. All tastings are by appointment only. Ordering a grazing board in advance from the local Cailloux Cheese Shop makes for a wonderful accompaniment during tastings. Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a memorable destination, Brave & Maiden Estate offers a unique and bewitching experience that will leave a lasting impression.
For a family-friendly experience that combines the artistry of farm-to-table cuisine with winemaking in the serene beauty of nature, Vega Vineyard & Farm is the answer. From the exploration of sprawling vineyards to engaging in farm-to-table activities and relishing exceptional wine tastings, guests are invited to celebrate sustainability, craftsmanship, and the rich flavors nurtured by this remarkable estate. With an unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and a dedication to quality, this winery and farm promises a delightful escape and a deeper appreciation for the fusion of nature and wine.
Vega Vineyard & Farm is the living dream of owner Demetrios “Jimmy” Loizides. The similarities between his Mediterranean childhood home and the Santa Ynez Valley were uncanny. Jimmy always wanted to raise kids in a small town, and so 11 years ago, when his wife Karen was pregnant with their son, they made the move from Long Beach to this region. “I never wanted to open a winery. I’m a restaurant guy,” he recounts. “But I’ve always had this dream of doing like an Agritourismo European thing.” Jimmy wasn’t looking to be in the wine business, despite the fact that he was already in wine country. “So, when this property came up, it was perfect for what I wanted to do; it had everything, except it was a winery.”
In a stroke of perfect timing, the stars aligned to bring renowned winemaker Steve Clifton to Vega just as Jimmy was acquiring it—not only were the two already friends, but their sons go to school together. “It all fell into place,” Jimmy is proud to say. Santa Barbara County is where Steve’s winemaking roots and passion reside, making it all the more poetic that he’s the winemaker at Vega Vineyard & Farm, whose origins date back to 1853. Dr. Roman de la Cuesta was gifted Rancho de Vega (which is Spanish for “the meadow”) as a dowry when he married Micaela Cota, daughter of Francesca Cota, of the neighboring Rancho Santa Rosa. Eventually, their son Eduardo and his wife Eleva lived on the property and grew wine grapes there.
In 1976, Bill Mosby and his wife Jeri purchased the 206-acre Rancho la Vega and planted 18 acres of wine grapes. Having learned of the ranch’s rich history, Vega Vineyards was born as a Mosby family venture to sell wine grapes to wineries. In 1980, a name-change from Vega Vineyards to Mosby Winery redirected focus on selling directly to customers from the property’s tasting room. Today, Jimmy and Karen Loizides carry on that tradition of farming and hospitality with modern-day Vega Vineyard & Farm, whose winery, restaurant, and catering operations offer a genuine farm-to-table model for friends and community alike.
“Almost all the produce is from my farm,” asserts Jimmy. “We grow a third of an acre of organic vegetables here, and an acre and a half at my house,” which is just five miles away. “When people ask us what direction the main menu goes, it goes as the farm goes.” Even the eggs are from the farm, as they have their own chickens. “We try to incorporate as much as we can from the farm,” Jimmy reveals. “There is something very special about picking your own produce. It just tastes better when it’s organic and fresh.”
As one of just a couple wineries that has dining options on-site in this region, farm-to-table is not just a goal at Vega Vineyard & Farm—it’s their way of life. The seasonally evolving menu, cultivated by Santa Barbara-native Executive Chef Christopher Rossi, perfectly pairs with Vega’s wines. “We just want it to be very European,” explains Jimmy. “You would never—you could never—go to the Mediterranean … to a winery and not have food. The experience is
all about the dining experience with the wine. So, our wines are very drinkable,” which is Steve’s favorite way of making wine.
In addition to the dining menu, visitors are encouraged to check out the winery’s tasting room, where you can sample their wines, enjoy a picnic, play lawn games, and visit the farm animals. Vega’s farm stand offers visitors a wide selection of local and California-rooted items, as well as property-grown fruits, vegetables, pies, and bakery treats. You can hand-feed the animals, and there is a pumpkin patch with farm activities from September to November. Or, stay at Vega’s historic private adobe home, Vineyard Casita, located just steps from the tasting room and farm animals. Even beyond their wines, Vega Vineyard & Farm is a truly family-oriented destination, designed with the needs and enjoyment of everyone in mind.
“We have a really unique little slice of land here, too,” General Manager Kara Teel details of Vega’s grape acreage. “They’re Italian varietals and that’s very not of the normal around here,” states Kara of the 16 different varietals. “It really kind of sets us apart.” She explains that Steve was the Italian wine master in the area, “So, it was perfect for us to partner with him and to produce these wines.” Yet Vega is still striving for more. “We’re gonna be doing some really cool things here. Music festivals, concerts, fundraisers,” Jimmy professes of what’s to come at Vega. Between his grand vision, the unique wine style, an ever-changing seasonal menu, and such undeniable hospitality, Vega Vineyard & Farm will surely leave you eager to come back soon.
Bread is perhaps the most universal food on the planet, yet Bob Oswaks has transformed this fundamental human staple into so much more than mere sustenance. Today, Bob’s Well Bread has established itself as a premier destination for artisanal bread and delectable pastries. But this quaint bakery is so much more than the sum of its outstanding creations. Its success is a testament to the vision and dedication of its owner, whose business is also a pillar of its community. A culinary virtuoso and passionate entrepreneur, Bob has built a haven for food enthusiasts seeking exceptional quality and taste.
A former Hollywood film executive, Bob left the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry to pursue his true passion: baking. After some three decades in television, Bob was at a transition point. “I started making bread while I was waiting for the headhunters to keep my mind and my hands busy.” His bread was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback. “I went up to the San Francisco Baking Institute in South San Francisco, and, over the course of two years, took every course they had on bread and pastry.” Bob hired a guy to help him write a business plan, talked his wife into leaving Hancock Park in Los Angeles to move north, and the rest is history.
The bakery and restaurant underwent a bit of an evolution with its clever name. Trying to do a play on words, “Thoroughbread” came to the forefront. “This was a little too horsey and was taken already,” admits
Bob. “Then my wife said, ‘What about ‘Well Bread’?’ And then we liked that—we started calling it Well Bread in LA because we were thinking of opening in Los Alamos, where we had a little weekend house, and that was being called LA, and we were living in LA, so I thought, ‘Well, wherever I’m making bread, it’s LA!’ But then it just got shortened to Bob’s Well Bread. It sort of stuck.”
The rise of Bob’s Well Bread began with a deep appreciation for not just bread, but the unity between food and community. Bob sought to create a haven where locals and visitors alike could savor the simple pleasure of artisanal bread. In 2014, Bob’s Well Bread was born, and its doors opened to a grateful community. Bob’s Well Bread now serves this corner of California through two locations: Los Alamos and Ballard. It’s unusual for the Los Alamos eatery to not have a line out the door. “So I opened this one up three years ago for locals,” Bob shares of the Ballard restaurant. “We’re fast and casual, so we serve breakfast and lunch.”
Both shops have an identical menu. “Whether you’re coming to Bob’s in Los Alamos or here, the sandwiches are gonna taste the same,” as will the salads, specials, etcetera. Bob’s specializes in bread and pastry. “And then there are the foods that we make with those breads. We curated a menu that utilizes our bread in different ways. There’s the breakfast sandwich on an English muffin, or the baguette prosciutto, or all these European-style grab-and-go sandwiches, which you can eat here or take away.”
At Bob’s Well Bread, every loaf of is a labor of love. Each product reflects Bob’s unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and quality. Beyond bread, Bob’s Well Bread tantalizes customers with an array of mouthwatering pastries and savory delights. From buttery croissants and iconic ficelle (little baguette) sandwiches to delicate tarts and flavorful quiches, every item showcases the expertise of Bob and his team. The restaurant’s cozy atmosphere and charming outdoor patio make it a beloved gathering spot for locals and tourists alike, where they can enjoy their treats alongside a perfectly-brewed cup of coffee.
It can be a challenge to make a menu selection, but it’s easy to love anything you order at Bob’s Well Bread. For all day breakfast, you can’t go wrong with the Breakfast Sandwich (featuring a house-made turkey sausage patty), Egg-in-a-Jar (a uniquely presented poached egg atop purple potato puree with toast soldiers), or Gravlax Platter (house-cured salmon with cream cheese and fixings for self-assembly). And for lunch, try the Croque-Monsieur or Madame (a baked ham and cheese sandwich with an optional fried egg) or The Well Bread BLT Tartine (a deconstructed sandwich that will change your life, with bacon baked into a thick slice of bread).
Every inch of Bob’s Well Bread is photo worthy. Rustic black and white checkerboard tile adorns the floors, huge windows usher in the outside, and French bistro chairs straddle café tables. Inspired by the wall of bread paintings in Paris’s famous Poilâne bakery, the southern wall of the Ballard restaurant is lined with bread still lifes. In the corner are pieces made by a local art class that feature Bob’s bread and pastries. This collaboration came about when he asked an art teacher friend to have her students paint his product for an in-house art opening with champagne, and he wound up buying many of the pieces for the display. Now, other artists paint his bread and said art is hanging for sale. Such exemplifies the nature of Bob’s integration with the community on a deeply personal level.
As the visionary behind Bob’s Well Bread, Bob Oswaks has transformed a humble bakery into a culinary destination renowned for its exceptional bread and pastries. Through his unwavering dedication to craftsmanship, commitment to quality, and genuine connection with the community, Bob has created a haven where food lovers can indulge their senses and experience the magic of artisanal baking. By sourcing ingredients from nearby farms and participating in local events, Bob’s Well Bread has become an integral part of Los Alamos and Ballard for both locals and tourists alike—it is a testament to the power of passion and the pursuit of culinary excellence.
The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is on a mission “To conserve native plants and habitats for the health and well-being of people and our planet.” They believe that “native plants are one of the most direct solutions to our biodiversity and climate change crisis,” standing as a testament to the timeless beauty of nature and the enduring spirit of conservation. Established in 1926, this horticultural haven has grown from a small collection of native plants to a sprawling 78-acre garden, captivating visitors and locals alike with its diverse flora and serene ambiance.
The history of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is rooted in the vision of a group of forward-thinking individuals who recognized the importance of preserving California’s native plant species. Through the Garden, its visionaries have facilitated the protection, study, and sharing of native plants to help heal our planet. Ecologist Dr. Frederic Clements is often cited as the Garden’s founding visionary, although it was Ervanna Bissell, the Garden’s first associate director, who established its mission to conserve and grow native plant communities.
This approach sets it apart from the majority of botanic gardens, which often extract exotic plants from other parts of the world. Today’s resulting sanctuary not only showcases the region’s unique plant life but also serves as a center for education and research. Thanks to the generosity of philanthropists Anna Dorinda Blaksley Bliss and her daughter Mildred Barnes Bliss, the Garden was able to preserve this sacred space and opened its doors to the public on March 16th, 1926. In the decades that followed, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has expanded its collections, developed new research initiatives, and established itself as a leader in the field of native plant conservation.
Today, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden remains an oasis of tranquility and a haven for plant enthusiasts, researchers, and nature lovers alike. Much of the grounds were designed by Beatrix Farrand, the first female landscape architect in the United States of America. The Garden’s carefully curated Living Collection boasts 974 species of unique native species, subspecies, and cultivars. From vibrant wildflowers that paint the landscape with bursts of color to majestic coastal redwoods that whisper tales of ancient times, the Garden offers a captivating tapestry of California’s natural heritage.
Several supporting entities bolster the conservation efforts and expand educational resources through the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. The Garden’s Tissue Bank contains 11,405 DNA samples representing 120 plant families and 465 genera, which, in turn, allows the organization to help better identify and protect rare plants. The Conservation Seed Bank safeguards 2.9 million seeds, facilitating the protection of 305 rare species from the threat of extinction. Currently, 211,000 unique specimens of plants, lichen, and fungus are contained in the Clifton Smith Herbarium.
The majestic Pritzlaff Conservation Center & Gallery, which stands at the Garden’s highest point, showcases rotating exhibits that focus on the intersection of art and science as well as pieces from the Garden’s permanent collection and Artist Residency Program. The current “At the Edge” exhibit may be viewed until the end of July.
“This exhibit is a wonderful look at a side of the Garden many don’t yet realize exists,” says Kevin Spracher, the Garden’s Interpretation and Exhibitions Curator. “It showcases two incredible conservation projects on the Channel Islands led by our team, which is just a fraction of the work we’re doing to conserve native plants and habitats here in Santa Barbara and across California. We hope they inspire everyone who visits.”
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden continues to play a vital role in environmental conservation and education. Its Nursery Garden, for example, has sold over 22,000 native plants, which continue to provide vital habitat across the state of California. Through its research programs, it advances the understanding of native plants, their ecosystems, and their ecological significance. The Garden also hosts educational programs, workshops, and events, inspiring visitors of all ages to develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and become stewards of the environment.
There are 11 distinct California ecosystems for visitors to experience on the garden’s grounds: Desert, Meadow, Redwoods, Manzanitas, Canyon, Backcountry, Island View, Home Demonstration, Wooded Dell, Pollinator Garden, and Arroyo. The newest garden, now celebrating its first anniversary, is Backcountry. It’s designed for kids to explore nature in an unstructured way and encourages visitors to go off the designated trails. Scattered throughout are five “Casitas,” which simultaneously act as “nature playhouses” and sculptural works of art—although some of the designs changed from conception to execution, all were selected through a submission competition and will remain on display in the Backcountry for a two-year installation period.
The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is unique in that it focuses entirely on plants native to California—it even has redwood trees and rare plants found on the Channel Islands, which are visible on clear days. As the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden enters its next century, it stands as a living testament to the tireless efforts of those who have sought to preserve and celebrate California’s native flora. It invites visitors to embark on a journey of discovery, where the beauty of nature intertwines with the wonders of scientific inquiry, fostering a profound connection between humans and the natural world.
Nestled in the picturesque coastal city of Santa Barbara lies a haven of conserved wildlife. The Santa Barbara Zoo is spread across 30 acres of stunning grounds and offers visitors a remarkable opportunity to connect with nature, encounter exotic animals, and embark on an educational adventure. Reflecting on its commitment to animal welfare, conservation efforts, and engaging exhibits, Kevin Nuss, Director of Marketing at the Santa Barbara Zoo, shares, “The Santa Barbara Zoo has been a community treasure for 60 years now, so we’re incredibly fortunate that both locals and tourists continue to visit and support our work with animals.” See what awaits within the gates of this captivating, beloved Zoo as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.
Founded in 1963, the Santa Barbara Zoo has grown into a world-class facility dedicated to conserving wildlife and providing related education. Its primary goal is to inspire visitors and instill in them a deep appreciation for the natural world. From the moment you step foot into the Zoo, you are transported into a realm where conservation takes center stage. The Santa Barbara Zoo actively
participates in breeding programs for endangered species, including the California condor and Channel Island fox, playing a vital role in their recovery and survival.
Educational opportunities are abundant at the Zoo, with numerous programs designed for visitors of all ages. Through interactive exhibits, engaging talks, and behind-the-scenes tours, the Zoo’s dedicated staff provides valuable insights into animal behavior, habitats, and conservation efforts. By fostering a love for wildlife and the environment, the Santa Barbara Zoo helps cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards.
The Santa Barbara Zoo is consistently ranked as a top attraction in the area for several reasons. “We are very lucky to have the amazing location that we do,” admits Nuss. “Not many zoos can say that they are directly across the street from the beach and that several of the animals have a fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean. Plus, our amazing staff work incredibly hard to keep the grounds lush and beautiful.”
One of the most enthralling aspects of the Santa Barbara Zoo is the diverse range of animal species it houses. Home to more than 500 animals, the Zoo enables visitors to embark on a journey of discovery and get up close with incredible creatures from around the world. The Zoo features various exhibits and habitats that authentically recreate the natural environments of the animals, providing an immersive experience. Additionally, the Zoo boasts an impressive array of primates, big cats, reptiles, and birds, each showcasing their unique beauty and behaviors.
Each exhibit is special, but a favorite among visitors is the Australian Walkabout, which recreates an authentic outback setting. “Every animal and habitat is so unique that you truly have to see them all to get an appreciation of how varied and incredible the animal kingdom is,” Nuss begins to explain. “That said, the Australian Walkabout is our newest habitat, opening last January, and it is pretty special. It’s an immersive walkthrough experience, meaning there are no traditional enclosures and you’re actually sharing the space with kangaroos, wallabies, and emus. There’s nothing quite like observing an animal from just a few feet away to create a special connection.”
Numerous attractions allow for a variety of interactive experiences. Two C.P. Huntington trains circle the perimeter of the Zoo, delighting riders and onlookers alike. The Zoo Train is located across from the Kallman Family Play Area. Giraffe Feeding provides people with the unique opportunity to hand-feed Masai giraffes from a deck overlooking the coastline, while Barnyard Feeding is home to domestic sheep and goats that can be fed specially formulated pellets. Fossil Find inspires youngsters to learn about and explore prehistoric animals. Animal Encounters are 30-minute meet-and-greet educational experiences with insightful Q&A sessions. Guests can observe animal food preparation from a large window overlooking the Ridley-Tree Animal Kitchen. The Volentine Gallery features ever-changing exhibits that relate to the natural world and the Zoo’s mission.
At the core of the Santa Barbara Zoo’s mission is its commitment to wildlife conservation and environmental advocacy. By collaborating with global organizations and actively participating in various conservation programs, the Zoo plays a significant role in protecting endangered species and their habitats. Through innovative initiatives, such as sustainable practices, captive breeding programs, and research partnerships, the Santa Barbara Zoo strives to make a tangible impact on the preservation of biodiversity. The Zoo also educates visitors about the importance of conservation and provides practical ways through which individuals can contribute to the protection of wildlife and the environment.
The Santa Barbara Zoo offers a delightful fusion of education, entertainment, and conservation. From captivating encounters with exotic animals to immersive exhibits that bring nature to life, every visit here is an unforgettable experience. Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, a family seeking adventure, or a nature lover looking to connect with the natural world, the Santa Barbara Zoo is a destination that will leave you inspired and enlightened. Embark on a journey through this remarkable institution and discover the wonders of the animal kingdom while supporting crucial conservation efforts.
