WELcoME To ASSEMbLy FESTIvAL 2014 And our 34Th progrAMME For ThE EdInburgh FESTIvAL FrIngE In the midst of so many offerings during the Festival, Assembly sets out to be distinctive by creating a programme that appeals through its excellence. We have set a standard by working on country seasons with the support of Government agencies. We present our third South African Season – Silent Voice, Race by David Mamet, Hayanai, Sunday Morning and The Zulu. And we welcome our first New Zealand Season with The Factory, Haka, On the Upside Down of the World, Black Grace, Strange Resting Places, Black Faggott and the sitespecific Generation of Z: EDINBURGH. Our comedy programme includes Jason Bryne, Frank Skinner, David O’Doherty, Sara Pascoe, Holly Walsh, Jack Dee, Nina Conti, Paul Chowdhry, Al Murray, Jim Davidson and Hannah Gadsby amongst many others. Simon Callow returns to the Main Hall in Juvenalia where we welcome back the Royal Conservatoire with The Addam’s Family, and play host to the naughty night time 50 Shades! The Musical. The Actors Touring Company bring Blind Hamlet by Nassim Soleimanpour to Assembly Roxy, whilst his White Rabbit Red Rabbit is in George Square. The Tumanishvili Film Actors’ Theatre and Guy Masterson present Animal Farm and Richard Herring presents his new play I Killed Rasputin. We also have the Bruntwood Prize winning Anna Jordon with Freak and Symphony by Nabokov. If you fancy something a little more physical, Arlene Phillips and Pamela Stephenson Connolly present Brazouka, we have the Pants Down Circus in the Spiegeltent, Rhythmic Circus return with Feet Don’t Fail Me Now, and a new dance adaption of The Great

Gatsby by Broadway choreographer Ryan Domres. For the mini movers, we have Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall, Ready Steady Ceilidh and Ali McGregor’s Jazzamatazz to get your day started. For the more grown up movers, the ultimate Festival dance party This is Ceilidh takes over the Spiegeltent. The sublime Lady Rizo returns along with a stellar line up of cabaret and music in Checkpoint, including the Cora Bissett directed Janis Joplin: Full Tilt, plus we have new work from Andy Bell, Joe Stilgoe and Antonio Forcione. Thanks are due to countless people that make all this happen, led by the great Assembly Team, but in particular the University who are our main host, the Department of Arts and Culture in South Africa and Creative New Zealand. Look out for our other sponsors; they are credited here and deserve a cheer. This is a mere sample of our programme, so do head to assemblyfestival.com for our line ups and full listings. Join us in our wonderful Spiegel Gardens this summer, and for a “powerhouse of creative energy”, look no further. Have a great Festival.

WILLIAM BURDETT-COUTTS NB ALTHOUGH WE RAN THE ASSEMBLY ROOMS FROM 1981 TO 2010, THIS IS NOW RUN BY ANOTHER COMPANY SALT’N’SAUCE. PLEASE CAREFULLY CHECK LISTINGS TO PREVENT CONFUSION.

PLASTIC ROSE

Institute for the Exploration of Theatre, Dance and Performance

Set inside a mental hospital, Shogo Ota's Plastic Rose has been compared to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Though in proximity to others, these characters are alone. Often funny, awkward and poignant, they try to find the warmth and comfort of others. Whether marrying the wrong person, learning to kiss while yawning, walking in stolen high-heel shoes, howling at the moon, or drinking water upside down, these people crave community. Alongside Tadashi Suzuki and Shujiki Terayama, Shogo Ota was instrumental in creating the rich theatrical landscape of post war Japan. ITDP is proud to present Plastic Rose's British premiere.

DOGS OF WAR

Theatre Tours International - Guy Masterson, Tumanishvili Film Actors Theatre (Georgia)

Institute for the Exploration of Theatre, Dance and Performance

Using the original text of Shakespeare's Wars of the Roses plays alongside new text by Master of Verona author David Blixt, Dogs of War features the oft-cut scenes of soldiers, citizens, women, children and ghosts to re-examine representations of war via the bodies of common people. A Chorus acts as guide, interlocutor and provocateur as he navigates the audience through the underbellies of some of the Bard's most famous plays, including Henry V and Richard III. With an ensemble of sixteen portraying more than three dozen different characters, Dogs is a strikingly contemporary, multimedia incarnation of the history canon. Twitter: @ITDP_Fringe

MERRY CHRISTMAS, MS MEADOWS

George Orwell's political masterpiece brought to life in an epic new production from Georgia's premier theatre company. From the state that bore Josef Stalin, the internationally acclaimed Tumanishvili Film Actors Theatre poignantly recreate the barnyard fable that satirises his totalitarian abuses. Olivier Award winner Guy Masterson directs a cast of thirty in a performance of stunning physicality and power. Masterson's previous directing credits include Morecambe and 12 Angry Men.

Belarus Free Theatre

Internationally acclaimed and fearlessly inventive Belarus Free Theatre (Winners - 2013 Impatto Totale Award and 2011 Fringe First Award) return to Edinburgh with a brand new production which challenges the roles of identity, gender and sexuality in the world today. Using first degree research from Africa, Asia, Europe and America, in areas where to be different is often comparable to a criminal act, merry christmas, Ms Meadows draws on real life stories to create an original and arresting piece of theatre.

"The animals on Manor Farm chase their master away to run things for themselves. At first it's Elysium and all animals are equal... but slowly, it becomes evident that some animals are more equal than others." Please note, this production is performed in the Georgian language with English surtitles. www.theatretoursinternational.com | Twitter: @GuyMasterson

THE CURING ROOM

WELCOME TO TEREZIN

Spring 1944 - Seven Soviet soldiers have been captured by the Nazis, stripped naked and abandoned in the locked empty cellar of a monastery. Deprived of all ties to their world, the prisoners redefine their concepts of order and human nature. To survive the men resort to murder and cannibalism. How do they reconcile rank, faith, and dignity? Powerful, thought-provoking and darkly funny, The Curing Room by David Ian Lee and directed by Joao de Sousa is a bold, shocking thriller based on true events.

1944 - Terezin, near Prague is dubbed Hitler's "Village for the Jews". Is it a Paradise ghetto as the Nazis claim, where the work of musicians and actors thrives? Or something far more sinister? Film star Kurt Gerron is making a documentary about the camp and the Carousel Cabaret is rehearsing for a Red Cross visit. Will the truth emerge in this funny, powerful and important new musical play?

THE HEMLINE INDEX Portmanteau

A poor economy lengthens more than the hemline. In 1984: second-wave feminism, economic boom and mini skirts. 2014? Fourth-wave, underemployment, the mid-length. Daughters, mothers, friends, lovers... Combining movement, verbatim and spoken word, Portmanteau explore the lives of two twentysomething women in their defining decade. A comedic, poetic performance. London-based, all-female company. New devised work.

Theatre Tours International - Guy Masterson

ONE PERFORMANCE ONLY! Guy Masterson's Stage 2001 Best Actor Award winning show celebrates the brilliance of 11 poems and 3 short stories from the Welsh wizard in his centenary year. Masterson makes the words sing and vibrate in a manner reminiscent of his great uncle Richard Burton, conjuring the romantic lyricism and genius wordplay that made Thomas one of the world's greatest.

Karen and Bronnie drink and joke their way through life where their greatest crises are unresolved takeaways and low tides in their wine glasses. They are blissfully conscience-free even at their most destructive. Important life lessons of love and Clearasil need to be learnt as past and future collide. It might finally be time to sober up and take life seriously.

Fringe First Award winner, Total Theatre Award nominee and sellout show 2013 returns: Joe looks back at his childhood home and traces its journey from idyllic seaside town to community gripped by anarchy. SAINT-EXUPÉRY, A PILOT'S STORY

PENTIMENTO

A pilot stranded in the desert encounters a little prince from a small planet. This enchanting fable teaches the secret of what is really important in life. Based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's life as a French aviation pioneer in the 1920s and on his bestselling book The Little Prince. All grown-ups were once children - although few of them remember it.

Roisin doesn't recognise her daughter or her grandchildren, but her world has become so much bigger.

Panic Productions

Vagabond Productions

She is inundated by memories from her ancestors, stories of women who survived invasions, famine and a lot of washing. A loving and humorous tribute to her mother and all those women who refused to shut up.

THE GOD BOX: A DAUGHTER'S STORY

BLOOD AT THE ROOT

An overachieving daughter, devastated after the sudden loss of her mother, makes a startling discovery - private boxes of notes to God written by the very hand that has slipped away. These secret petitions scribbled on torn pages and Post-its lure her onto an emotional roller coaster, ricocheting from grief to laughter to the greatest human challenge: learning to let go.

This explosive new drama from Dominique Morisseau explores the escalating racial tensions at a divided American high school. Inspired by the true story of six black teenagers charged with the attempted murder of a white student after a schoolyard fight, it is a non-conventional play infused with music and movement. An exciting and provocative theatrical experience.

Based on her New York Times bestseller, 'The God Box', charismatic storyteller Mary Lou Quinlan will make you laugh, cry and want to call your mother.

Kennedy Drama Prize winner Morisseau is one of the most exciting new voices in American theatre. Her previous work has been performed at New York's Public Theater and the Gate Theatre, Notting Hill.

FRANK SENT ME

Neighbours star Morgana O'Reilly has charmed the pants off audiences all over the world with this tour de force from Down Under. In a feat of shapeshifting alchemy, she takes on all the members of a nuclear family - set to detonate over the course of one side-splitting, torturous lunch. Knocked up daughters, fish sex, instant coffee and the perks of hand modelling. Hilarious and heartbreaking.

Underworld enforcer Howe's not afraid to die, but it would've been nice if Frank had sent someone vaguely competent to do the job. Partner in life and crime Wallace just hopes they don't make too much mess. A darkly comic Ortonesque farce by Julian Poidevin, directed by Peter Darney. Winner of Writer's Avenue's 'Best Play' Award.

LITTLE JOKES

SUNDAY MORNING

"I see life as basically tragic and futile and the only thing that matters is making little jokes". In his third Edinburgh premiere, BBC award-winner Seamus Collins brings Edward Lear's much loved nonsense poetry to life in this dark and magical tale of one boy's struggle with loss, loneliness and growing up.

Mat is a successful photographer who has his life exactly how he likes it - until the day his girlfriend tells him she is pregnant. In an attempt to process this disturbing information he goes out for a run. Straying from his regular route, he ventures into a strange part of the city where he makes a gruesome discovery that changes everything.

A bucolic psycho-drama by Harold Pinter. Starring Thom Tuck (The Penny Dreadfuls), Catriona Knox (The Boom Jennies) and Simon Munnery. Pause. A Slight Ache is an underperformed Pinter classic: a study in marital stagnation and bristling surrealism.

A multiple Grammy and Tony Award nominee, South African theatre and music legend Mbongeni Ngema returns to the stage after twenty-seven years to retell stories, told to him as a young boy growing up in the heart of Zululand, by his blind great-grandmother, Mkutshana. The stories take us on a journey through the formation of the Zulu nation and its struggles for survival to the moment when the Zulu nation stops British imperial expansion dead in its tracks at the battle of Isandlwana. This is a compelling journey of personal identity, which combines music, ritual and performance revealing the stories, that, with extraordinary foresight, Mkutshana had protected and hidden within the confines of her rural home during the height of Apartheid. Ngema co-wrote the classic Woza Albert! and created the Broadway hits Sarafina! and Asinamali! www.assemblyfestival.com

GOODBYE GUNTHER

SOCHI 2014

When Gunther finds out he hasn't long left, he starts to live life to the full... Idiosyncratic, a little ridiculous, a little profound, Goodbye Gunther faces death head on in a delightfully human mix of physical comedy, pathos, tragedy and joy. An affectionate and ultimately life-affirming show brought to you by the team of the 'Confetti Maker', Director: John Wright. Booking: Richardson PRM; #GoodbyeGunther

Sochi 2014 explores the homophobia surrounding this year's Olympics. Dubbed London's first rapid-response theatre production, the play uses verbatim testimony, depicting heartwrenching tales of rejection, horrendous fears of being outed and optimistic dreams of a tolerant Russia. Through a series of moving vignettes, the play explores whether the international community did enough and what has really changed since.

An "immensely talented ensemble" (Fest) conjure a hilarious, irreverent and physically playful version of Gogol's timeless tale of power and corruption. Witty, smart and wildly satirical, this allmale version promises a slick visual feast with a healthy dose of silliness, as they spiral into a world of panic and l'amour, with biting hilarity.

THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF COMEDY (ABRIDGED) Reduced Shakespeare Company

Written and Directed by Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor. It's the subject they were born to reduce! Pleasance favorites return with the UK premiere of The Complete History of Comedy (abridged), dissecting humor from Aristophanes to Zaltzman. The bad boys of abridgment deconstruct the entire history of comedy, leaving no joke untold in 75 fast, funny, and physical minutes! - Which is the least funny nationality? Which is the funniest? Why did the former try to exterminate the latter? - Is Moliere funny? Why not? - Why did the chicken cross the road? The RSC dreams of a day when chickens can travel freely without their motives being questioned. Warning: Side effects may include uncontrollable milking and painful running gags! www.reducedshakespeare.com | Twitter: @reduced

RUNNING INTO ME

LET IT FALL (AFTER KING LEAR)

A call from home sends Vickie Tanner on a whirlwind tour of her life, proving wherever you go - there you are. Riveting and audacious, this extraordinary true story of escape from the drug and prison culture of her urban American neighborhood was one of five performances chosen for A Series of One festival at La Mama in NYC.

Leah wants to rest, Goneril and Regan want to party, Cordelia's off to France and matricide is in the air. A bold and beautiful piece of new writing that has rewired King Lear to create a charged drama of familial strife, ferocious behaviour, cheese sandwiches and love.

It is this year's recipient of the Charlie Hartill Special Reserve Fund for Theatre.

Margaret has a playdate... with a bottle of Rosé and a bowl of pink pills, but her romance with death is rudely interrupted by an intruder, a snoop and a policeman. Northern Ireland's Queen of Comedy, Nuala McKeever, delivers a poignant, hilarious, disastrous cocktail that's to die for about the resilience of the human heart in the face of... well, just about everything that can go wrong in our crazy modern lives.

Iceland. 1940. The British are coming. With 25,000 male troops arriving in Reykjavik, the Icelandic women certainly have something to focus on. A lively reflection on the shared history between Iceland and England, with live music and gale force winds.

BLIND

Jess has Tourettes, a condition that makes her say 'biscuit' 16,000 times a day. She's neurologically incapable of staying on script and that's when the fun begins. A two-woman solo show: ticcing, singing, and things you never knew would make you laugh.

A beatboxing theatre show unlike any other, UK beatboxing champion Grace Savage explores what young people are hearing in the world, from motherly advice to what we learn in the school playground and the music charts. An interrogation into the influences on young people today, this energetic, powerful show will have you on the edge of your seat.

SIGNAL FAILURE

Jess dreams of treading the boards. Pilar wants to act in a supermarket drama. And Bronwyn's gone viral on YouTube. Lights! Camera! Act like you know yourself! Watch Jess manoeuvre her way through salsa routines, thankless crowd scenes, questionable auditions and pearls of wisdom from a pantomime horse. A new one-woman comedy-drama about making coffee and making it!

Signal Failure: A girl and (kind-of) stalker guy journey through life, love and the London transport system, until a newspaper column brings them together! Brief encounters give way to (awkward) sexual encounters: but the course of London transport never did run smooth. Expect accidents, delays and severe signal failure in this twisted rom-com. SHOW OFF

NORMAL/MADNESS

You're so vain you probably think this show is about you. But it's actually about Figs in Wigs - the lowbrow answer to avantgarde. Show Off delves deep into our shallow digital existence, examining how social media has bred a new form of narcissism. Masquerading as a variety show this desperately glitzy number continually reinvents itself to satisfy even the most depleted of attention spans.

'Our mothers always remain the strangest, craziest people we've ever met.' (Marguerite Duras)

Figs in Wigs / Escalator East To Edinburgh

Kidder

Kirsty's mother is inappropriate, embarrassing and definitely unusual. For 25 years Kirsty accepted crazy as conventional. All mothers are slightly insane, right? But Kirsty's mother isn't like all mothers... she's schizophrenic. Based on a true story, this frank, funny and deeply touching tale follows Kirsty McKenzie as she attempts to distinguish her mother from the madness.

BLACK IS THE COLOR OF MY VOICE

A funny, moving and unflinchingly honest account of mental illness. In 2011 Byron spent his summer resting in the magnolia bosom of an NHS psychiatric unit. In this show he extends the frayed mitten of insanity in the hope that you might shake hands.

Inspired by Nina Simone, Apphia Campbell's hit show follows the life of Mena Bordeaux, a successful singer seeking redemption after her father's death. During a three-day spiritual cleanse, Mena reflects on the journey that took her from a piano prodigy destined for a life serving the church to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JOANS Greenwich Theatre and Patrick Wilde

A bittersweet comedy about dementia, friendship and mimicking martyrs by Fringe First winning writer Philip Meeks, directed by award-winning writer/director Patrick Wilde. Stage and screen stars Susan Penhaligon (Bouquet of Barbed Wire) and Katy Manning (Doctor Who) play rival theatricals forced to face the traumatic past that ruined their friendship. But who played the greatest Saint Joan of all?

The city's asleep A stray cat cries A drawing of a man on the pavement And a body inside... Humphrey Bogart meets Jay-Z in this contemporary and darkly comic hip hop fable, performed entirely in rap. A mesmerising musical tale of vanity, lust and murder. Joe is a private detective in a corrupt and decaying city. No rehearsals. No director. No set. A different performer reads the script for the first time at each performance. Visionary playwright Nassim Soleimanpour, unable to leave his native Iran, has written a play which has travelled the world in his place. A journey into the unknown; stumbling upon the personal and profound, the limits of liberty and ultimately where theatre can take you, with or without a passport.

Two men shelter in a soup kitchen on a bitter Scottish evening. As the darkness looms, they face up to a past they cannot escape.

TRAVESTI

RAVENHILL vs HOLLYWOOD. Torrid scenes of passion; the dark spectre of international terrorism; big, big explosions. Has Leah (Olivia Poulet - The Thick of It; In the Loop; Outnumbered) got the perfect script to save Julia from B-movie hell? From the critically acclaimed writer of Shopping And Fucking and Some Explicit Polaroids.

Slick, warm, laugh-out-loud funny: Travesti takes the everyday lives of 21st century women and puts them into the mouths - and bodies - of six male actors. The guys gossip, dance and sing their way through women's real experiences of sexual violence, being groped on public transport and unruly body hair.

PRIVATE PEACEFUL BY MICHAEL MORPURGO Scamp Theatre

Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children's Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War. www.scamptheatre.com | Twitter: @scamptheatre

BLIND HAMLET

People talk. Rumours spread. No one approves. In greasy spoons and hotel rooms, two young believers are reluctantly falling in love. Cultural pressures and contemporary life collide in this stirring new play by Karla Crome (star of Misfits and Prisoners' Wives). A story about faith, family and bacon butties.

Blind Hamlet transforms Shakespeare's tragedy into an interactive theatrical battle, reimagining the bloody struggle for Hamlet's Elsinore. Volunteers take to the stage to outwit each other as a different power-struggle unfolds at each performance, turning Hamlet on its head and making every spectator a player.

ASSEMBLY GEORGE SQUARE STUDIOS | THREE

THE MATCHMAKER City Theatre Dublin

Anne Charleston and Jon Kenny star in John B. Keane's hilarious comedy which follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O Connor to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn from all parts of the rural Ireland. Everybody needs somebody sometimes, the old song tells us. The tricky part of relationships lies in determining exactly what one person needs from another - and why, when, and how much of it. At the centre of this celebrated production is John B Keane's marvellous and mischievous wit coupled by his unparalleled way with words. John B. Keane takes us back to a simpler time, when even phones were few and far between and the only web was one left behind by spiders. www.sfx.ie

CRAZY GLUE

PENNYROYAL

They have a car in the garage, a chicken in the pot and a child on the way. But is that enough to hold them together?

James and Laura broke up. Not uncommon after going through something like that. Pennyroyal, written and performed by Eamonn Hearns, is a darkly comic one-man show about relationships, mistakes and what it is to be a man. James is recently single and nearly thirty. Join him as he searches the Dublin streets, for meaning in the empty nights of dating and distracting booze.

AWAY FROM HOME

POMME IS FRENCH FOR APPLE

Kyle is comfortable with his life as an escort until the day he is hired by a premiership footballer and finds himself falling in love. Can Kyle maintain a relationship with a closeted footballer in a country where not one pro player is out? An edgy, moving and subversive one man show, direct from London's Jermyn Street Theatre, going in for a hard tackle on football's last taboo.

Pum (n): West Indian for a woman's private parts. POMME (sounds like... ). "Belongs to that bracing wave of candid, liberating, gleefully gross female humour unleashed by the likes of 30 Rock, Girls and Bridesmaids" (Globe and Mail). This charming duo offers a fresh look at womanhood in all its glory: its perils, its pleasures, and all kinda madness in between.

Jack Clover / Double Edge Drama

*SHORTLISTED: NATIONAL THEATRE.NEW VIEWS 2013* Sex, hugs and bacon rolls. In a state-controlled programme, young singles are trapped in a speed-dating cycle of morning-afters. Waking up next to a stranger, they have 24 hours to decide whether or not to spend the rest of their lives with the other: Yes or No - all or nothing. www.doubleedgedrama.com | Twitter: @thematchgame_14

Double Edge Drama has delivered names such as Dominic West and more recently Eddie Redmayne, Harry Lloyd and Tom Hiddleston. Can it do the same this year? GUARDIAN £6 W

Shame, guilt, class, sex, lies and race are all provocatively stirred together in this fast-paced drama from Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet. The play's riveting plot explores the attitudes of the two partners in a law firm, one AfricanAmerican and the other white, who must decide whether to take on the case of a wealthy white man accused of raping an African-American woman. As the lawyers, and the defendant, try to sift facts from assumptions, shattering revelations emerge about their deepest values. The play, like the case, is not open and shut.

Trygve Wakenshaw's sell-out cult hit of the 2013 fringe returns. A delightfully strange physical comedy about an imaginary friend who makes imaginary friends who make imaginary enemies who make imaginary armies out of imaginary Scotsmen. Nominated Total Theatre Award, 2013. Winner: Best Comedy, Auckland Fringe, 2013. Don't miss Wakenshaw's latest Barrynominated masterpiece KRAKEN, winner of the Edinburgh Underbelly Award.

This production from South Africa has been enthusiastically received in a country battling with the complexities of a post-apartheid society, in which residual prejudice continues to warp perceptions.

SIMON CALLOW IN JUVENALIA Assembly, Riverside Studios and Theatre Royal Plymouth

And now for something completely different - Simon Callow, theatrical treasure extraordinaire, reprises a success from early in his career. The writer, Juvenal born circa ad 55, wrote sixteen satires that attacked the decadence of Rome in it's hey day. Here adapted by Richard Quick we are given a view into the moral decline that is as relevant now, as it was back then. Callow's previous theatre credits include: Being Shakespeare, Waiting for Godot and A Christmas Carol. Film credits include: Shakespeare in Love, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Amadeus. Directed by Simon Stokes. www.assemblyfestival.com | Twitter: @SimonCallow

A comic delight... Callow comes on like a foul-tempered and thoroughly vicious Woody Allen. TIMES We emerge dazzled by the poet's almost pathological sexual anger and disgust and affected by Mr Callow's beautiful expose of it. GUARDIAN The uncanny parallels between decadent Rome and today flash, and the observation and lyricism delight and resonate. TIME OUT Richard Quick has adapted the vitriolic satires of the Roman ranter Juvenal into something resembling a night-club tirade by a reactionary comedian TIMES

ANTHEM FOR A DOOMED YOUTH

THE COLLECTOR

In commemoration of the Great War Edinburgh "Fringe Legend", Guy Masterson, recites the finest WWI writings from both sides of No-Man's Land. From Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon to Remarque's "All Quiet On The Western Front" life in the trenches is brought vividly to life. A powerfully evocative experience.

A satirical ghost story set during the U.S. occupation of Iraq... After taking over Saddam Hussein's most brutal prison camp, the Allied guards become possessed by its evil. A haunting premiere. Multi-award winning Henry Naylor was a lead writer on Spitting Image, and half of Parsons and Naylor.

UNDERBELLY, COWGATE | IRON BELLY Multi-award-winning Theatre Ad Infinitum (Ballad of the Burning Star, Translunar Paradise, Odyssey) presents a dystopian future inspired by Edward Snowden's surveillance revelations where implants connect brains to cyberspace and governments secretly infiltrate citizens' minds. Intense darkness, torchlight, graphic novel/anime inspired visuals, physical storytelling, and a stunning soundscape fuse to tell a story of love, betrayal, and technological power.

SO IT GOES On The Run

Coping with grief hasn't been easy for Hannah. In fact since her dad died, she's hardly spoken about it. Not one to be defeated, she's enlisted her friend David to help her on a journey through memory, laughter and sorrow, to finally come to terms with losing her dad.

ABLUTIONS

It's not easy being young, gay and Samoan - especially when God and your mother are watching. A parade of characters collide in a series of hilarious and poignant monologues.

Award-winning Bristol Old Vic Ferment's associate company, FellSwoop Theatre, follow-up their sell-out success of 'Belleville Rendez-vous', presenting a stage adaptation of Ablutions, the novel by Man Booker shortlisted author, Patrick DeWitt. A dark, boozy tale from the sodden depths of the LA underworld, blending a live soundtrack, detailed mime and DeWitt's heartwrenching humour.

THE INTERVIEW

Gare St Lazare Ireland in association with Signature Theatre New York

Ines Wurth Presents / Ma Chan Productions

A bitingly dark comedy centering around the extraordinary rendition of an American citizen, the use of enhanced interrogation techniques, America's insipid and ridiculous gun laws and the seemingly never ending cycle of man's inhumanity to man as we come to terms with the surveillance state that the world has become. Directed by Charles Otte, The Interview is a nonstop assault on the issues the play examines. Just when you think you've got it figured out the play twists back in on itself leaving the audience to decide just what in this world is real. ineswurth.com

UK premiere from Pulitzer Prize finalist and Fringe First Award-winner Will Eno (Thom Pain, The Realistic Joneses). Behold the newest nobody of the funniest century yet. He's almost Christ-like, from a distance, in terms of height and weight. Listen closely, or drift off uncontrollably, as he speaks to you directly about the notion of home, about the notion of the world. All of it delivered with the authority that is the special province of the unsure and the un-homed, which is a word he made up accidentally. Directed by Judy Hegarty Lovett. Gare St Lazare's work includes Molloy, First Love & The End by Samuel Beckett.

Leaves you happily word-drunk. Gorgeously and inventively wrought. Haunting and often fiercely funny, performed by the marvellous Conor Lovett. NEW YORK TIMES Daring, spectacular and hilarious. Eno's voice is unique; his play is stage poetry of a high order. Does the theatrical business THE NEW YORKER Pensive, lyrical, deeply funny and profoundly sad. VARIETY

ANDY BELL: TORSTEN THE BAREBACK SAINT Neil O'Brien Entertainment Ltd

Andy Bell, from pop legends Erasure, takes on "the most challenging role of his career so far" as age-defying, polysexual "Torsten The Bareback Saint." In this one-man theatrical song-cycle, he delivers musical missives from the hotspots of the memory of a learned, semi-immortal sensualist. Consequently, it's an unnaturally elongated life - so, is Torsten alive or dead, a carnal incarnate or munificent saint? Lovers and friends age and die and ultimately Torsten must leave them to avoid the disquiet of their witnessing that he himself does not age. Torsten sings deeply affecting expositional songs that incrementally illuminate the extraordinarily mysterious life of a man disconcerted by his own bizarre experience of the nature of passing years. www.saint-torsten.com

ALI MCGREGOR'S JAZZAMATAZZ

A stripped down version of Shakespeare's most ridiculous comedy. The original play is enhanced with smatterings of modern text, and draws on the rich traditions of vaudeville, slapsticks and the infectious sounds of klezmer music. With two sets of twins to be played by a cast of seven, The Comedy Of Errors makes for madcap doubling, hilarious mix ups and lots of running around! Specially adapted for audiences 7+

Jumpin' jivin' jazz for kids led by chanteuse Ali McGregor. Snappy beats get kids singing, prancing, twisting and dancing. Join in or grab a seat to watch the action! Ali, her dancers and live band rock'n'roll, swing and jive with the kids, teach them some moves and help keep the atmosphere one of unadulterated fun!
