“The Jewel in the Crown of the Fringe” Scotsman

Welcome to Assembly FestivAl 2014 And our 34th progrAmme For the edinburgh FestivAl Fringe. In the midst of so many offerings during the Festival, Assembly sets out to be distinctive by creating a programme that appeals through its excellence. We present our third South African Season – Silent Voice, Race by David Mamet, Hayani, Sunday Morning and The Zulu and welcome our first New Zealand Season with The Factory, Haka, On the Upside Down of the World, Black Grace, Strange Resting Places, Black Faggot and the site- specific Generation of Z. Our comedy programme includes Jason Byrne, Frank Skinner, David O’Doherty, Sara Pascoe, Holly Walsh, Jack Dee, Nina Conti, Paul Chowdhry and Al Murray amongst many others. Simon Callow returns to the Main Hall in Juvenalia where we also welcome back the Royal Conservatoire with The Addams Family, and play host to the naughty night time 50 Shades! The Musical. Richard Herring presents his new play I Killed Rasputin and Dame Diana Rigg makes her Fringe debut. If you fancy something a little more physical, Arlene Phillips and Pamela Stephenson Connolly present Brazouka, and Rhythmic Circus return with Feet Don’t Fail Me Now. For the mini movers, we have Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall, Ready Steady Ceilidh and Ali McGregor’s Jazzamatazz to get your day started. For the more grown up movers, the ultimate Festival dance party This is Ceilidh takes over the Spiegeltent Palazzo. The sublime Lady Rizo returns along with a stellar line up of cabaret and music in Checkpoint, including the Cora Bissett directed Janis Joplin: Full Tilt, plus we have new work from Erasure’s Andy Bell, Joe Stilgoe and Antonio Forcione. This is a mere sample of our programme, so do take the time to browse this guide or assemblyfestival.com for full listings. Join us for a drink in the wonderful George Square Gardens, and for a powerhouse of creative energy, look not further. Have a great Festival.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY Something is wrong with Wednesday Addams. Gomez and Morticia are desperately worried about their daughter; the charming little bundle of malice has lost her taste for death, darkness and torture. She is behaving like a demented Disney princess. Surely she hasn't fallen in love with someone... normal? This delightfully macabre, joyful and deliciously wicked musical comedy brings to life Charles Addams' oddly loveable and singularly eccentric comic cartoon creations, including Uncle Fester, Pugsley, Grandma, Lurch, Thing and a whole host of other-worldly ancestors. An irresistible celebration of family values, Addams-style!

SIMON CALLOW IN 'JUVENALIA' NONE

Assembly, Riverside Studios and Theatre Royal Plymouth

And now for something completely different - Simon Callow, theatrical treasure extraordinaire, reprises a success from early in his career. The writer, Juvenal born circa ad 55, wrote sixteen satires that attacked the decadence of Rome in it's hey day. Here adapted by Richard Quick we are given a view into the moral decline that is as relevant now, as it was back then. Callow's previous theatre credits include: Being Shakespeare, Waiting for Godot and A Christmas Carol. Film credits include: Shakespeare in Love, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Amadeus. Directed by Simon Stokes. www.assemblyfestival.com | Twitter: @SimonCallow

A comic delight... Callow comes on like a foul-tempered and thoroughly vicious Woody Allen. TIMES

JASON BYRNE IN YOU NAME THE SHOW

It's January and I'm asked, as I'm asked each year, "What's the name of your show Jason?". I ask "Do you mean the one that will be on in August and by the time I get there my show content will have changed at least 546 times?". "Yes" they say. So I've asked the audience to name the show and that's exactly what they'll do over the course of Edinburgh. Best name will win £500, there will be a leader board on stage each night. By the end of the Festival my show will have a name, thanks to you lot.
