Annual Retreat Kicks off the Year

A L T E R U M A L T E R I U S A U X I L I O E G E T

Due to conflicting summer schedules and work commitments, we did not hold our annual officer retreat. However, we were still able to hold our annual chapter retreat during the first weeks of fall quarter. After a couple of pizzas from Padrones and a few cases of room temperature Faygo which we enjoyed after brotherhood, (I have discovered free food draws crowds effectively) we discussed any issues brothers had with each other, officers, and the (L to R): Dave Eliser & Eric Youngblood fraternity in general. I am glad we had the opportunity to meet and discuss concerns brothers had at the time. Additionally, we selected our sweetheart for the 2004-2005 school year, which was once again Daniella Harley. Daniella is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Epsilon, ONU dance team, and is the girlfriend of WVC, Andy Kill. Hopefully, the tradition of officer retreats will restart this summer, because it is very beneficial for all brothers, as well as a good excuse to visit Ada in the summer. AAAE, Noah Sharp, WCC

Officer Reports Worthy Chief Counselor When I took over as president of Phi Delta Chi, I knew it would be a lot of responsibility to handle. Since I pledged Phi Delta Chi my P1 year, we have become one of the largest fraternities on campus with over 50 active brothers. Furthermore, we have obtained numerous awards such as Chapter of the Year, Highest GPA, Pledge of the Year, and Outstanding Alumni Program just to name a few. Acting on behalf of the brotherhood, my goals for the term were to continue with the example set before me and try new ideas. This year was the first in recent years that we had a booth at Welcomefest. This helped us meet freshman and start our fall rush. Also, I held several executive board meetings consisting of officers and committee chairs in order to help increase communication. I found these meetings helpful in bouncing ideas off people and keeping officers informed of current events. The goal of these meetings was to avoid brotherhood being the first time officers heard of important news or decisions. I feel we accomplished a lot in these meetings. In my first executive meeting of the school year, I evaluated the

fraternity and every office using my personal observations, ideas, and suggestions for each office. I believe this helped set the tone for a successful year. My main goal as president was to increase our focus as a professional organization, which I feel we are still working towards. This year we had the opportunity to work with the Lima Chapter of the Arthritis foundation. Several brothers worked a table in October for a Senior Health Care Expo for the Foundation. In December Phi Delta Chi, Kappa Epsilon, and Society of Medical Professionals hosted the campus wide Jingle Bell Run, the largest fundraiser for the organization. In February, we held a health screening at the Lima mall along with Kappa Epsilon and Phi Lambda Sigma. Hopefully, we will have additional opportunities for Phi Delta Chi to promote professionalism, giving back to ONU and our surrounding community. I would like to take the time to thank all the brothers that helped me transition from WAL to WCC, especially Dave Eliser. As a P2, the first few brotherhoods were a little intimidating; however, the support I received from fellow brothers was truly appreciated. While I was WCC, I worked to increase Phi Delta Chi’s presence at ONU by accepting a position in IFC as the Vice President of Finance. Since I have recently been elected president of IFC, I hope to represent Phi Delta Chi the best I can and further increase positive relations between us and the ONU campus. Good luck to all the new officers, especially Shawn. I know you will all do well with your positions. AAAE, Noah Sharp

Worthy Vice Counselor I started my term as Worthy Vice Counselor in the spring of 2004. I was nervous because this was my first office as a brother, and I had big shoes to fill with Jake Zimmerman and Chet Kaczor doing excellent jobs before me. The spring rush had already been successfully completed by Jake, who brought in a big class of great new brothers. Since I was free, I helped Noah Sharp gather and organize reports for the Greek Awards Ceremony. We won quite a few awards, one being the Most Outstanding Chapter. I also started to piece together my plan of attack for rush the next year. Fall quarter of 2004, my third year here at Northern, started off very quickly and I feel that I had missed some great rush opportunities. It is the one mistake in my office to which I confess. I quickly caught up hosting a few cookouts at the house in which a number of freshmen attended. We also went door to door to meet the guys face to face and discussed what is great about our fraternity. I could not have done this without the determination of the younger brothers who helped me every step of the way. Going door to door led to a great turnout at our annual BW3’s trip. We handed out a little over twenty bids fall quarter and were very selective in who joined. I was

2005 Greek Week Awards:

extremely nervous on bid acceptance night. I hoped that my hard work had paid off because I did not want to let the brotherhood down. Luckily for me and the fraternity, twelve accepted their bids and eleven great guys were initiated into the fraternity. Winter quarter was mostly uneventful as Vice Counselor; however, I did take over the intramural sports program which will now be implemented into the office of Vice Counselor. We had great participation in basketball and had enough guys to field two full teams. One of the teams made it to the semi-finals but came up just short. I believe we have had a very successful year in intramurals thus far. With the success of winter rush, my goals were not quite as high for the spring. I focused on a few guys that I wanted to join. Prospectives attended a few get togethers and our main rush event was a super bowl party that went very well. We only handed out eight bids in an attempt to remain as selective as possible but also continue to grow. Six of the eight bids were accepted. I was tremendously pleased with spring rush. It far exceeded my expectations. All in all, my term as Worthy Vice Counselor went better than I ever could have expected. We have gained a total of 17 new brothers this year, the most that I can ever remember being initiated in a single year. I had a great time with this office and wish the next WVC, Mick Bollenbacher, great success. AAAE, Andy Kill

Worthy Keeper of Records and Seals I would like to express my thanks to the brotherhood for the opportunity to serve as your Keeper of Records and Seals for the 2004-2005 year. The experience has really provided a way for me to serve and remain active in the brotherhood while being involved with as many activities as I have been. I have been fortunate to be actively involved since my initiation last fall. I continued to change and streamline the minutes, adding to the changes that Chris Paxos made the year before me. In conjunction with the WCC, I have also been in contact with Ohio Northern University in regards to the new Greek housing plans for campus. I have been honored to be a part of something so vital to this fraternity. The other major change this year was to produce a stronger judicial board for brothers who break our code of conduct. Lead by the WCC and other officers, the judicial board has made a noticeable effect on the number of incidents. I am proud to be able to hand over my office to the next generation of leadership and hope that the next WKRS continues to play an important part in our fraternity’s operation. AAAE, Kyle Gustafson

Worthy Keeper of Finance I would like to begin by thanking the entire brotherhood for electing me as the Worthy Keeper of Finance for 2004-2005. I have enjoyed being an even greater part of the fraternity by serving in this office. I feel this office has helped me play an important part in every function of the fraternity. With our great fundraisers and extremely successful Continuing Education Program, we raised a tremendous amount of money to donate to many charitable causes including: St. Judes, Florida Hurricane Relief Fund, ONU Christmas Angel Tree, Ada community food drive, ONU Jingle Bell Run, Tsunami Relief Fund, and many others. Our current number of brothers has reached a new highpoint enabling us to continue supporting these great causes both physically and financially. Once again, I would like to thank the whole brotherhood for their support and for continuing to pay their dues in a timely fashion. As we grow, we can continue to serve our school, profession, and community. As WKF, I have been a part of all of these areas and I wish the best of luck to the next WKF. AAAE, Eric Youngblood

Worthy Correspondent I am grateful for having been given the opportunity to serve our chapter of Phi Delta Chi by holding an office. The office of Correspondent was not something I knew much about before I ran for the office and was elected. Now I have a much better understanding of its importance, roles, and implications. I also understand the disappointment that a single missed or late report can bring upon the entire organization. Being Correspondent was often a challenge. There were times that reports were lengthy and involved, and it wasn’t always easy to have them completed on time. Unfortunately, we did not receive the 100% Efficiency Award during my term which is my biggest regret. This year I have made a firm resolve not to allow that to happen again, and we are currently on a 100% pace through January. The job is simple but involved. Gathering reports and brotherhood interest was something I didn’t necessarily do well. With the help of John Holmes and the brotherhood, I was able to complete and send in vital projects for national judging. Communication is so very vital in all walks of life. Not just any communication, but genuine communication, communication that is willing to take time out of our busy schedules to care and make sure things are going well. That was a personal lesson that strengthened the importance of communication, not only in fraternal life, but for

my life as a fiancé, son, brother, and friend. We need to take the time to make sure PDC is on track. That is why I am very thankful that I had a small part in making this happen for the past year. I would like to extend a special thanks to brothers Dan Dragar and Ben Tepfenhart for their firm resolve in completing the contraception professional project. It was a very eye opening experience, and the project could not have been successfully completed, sent in, and judged without their help. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Robert Onder, our newly elected Correspondent. I believe he is the best man for the upcoming job, and have full faith that he will not only keep the wheels rolling, but that he will pick the intensity up another notch.

Worthy Alumni Liaison I would like to begin by thanking the brotherhood for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Worthy Alumni Liaison for the past year. This office gave me a tremendous opportunity to interact with and serve many fine professionals that once stood in my shoes as a pharmacy student. Though sometimes hectic and often time consuming, the office has been a very rewarding experience that has greatly bolstered my ability to work with my future colleagues. During my term as WAL, the fraternity’s crowning achievement in alumni relations was our annual continuing education program held during homecoming weekend. This year’s version was overwhelmingly successful, as we courted a record 77 registered pharmacists, including several PDC alumni. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill McMillen at the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy and Shawn Lamb from Pfizer for providing us with the required continuing education lectures. During my term, we have received several financial contributions from alumni. Without this support, our fraternity would cease to exist. Therefore, we extend our deepest gratitude to all alumni that have supported us. I would like to remind any alumni that are not currently in the alumni association electronic database that this invitation is always open. If you would like to be added, simply send your name and email address to the new WAL, Jake Zimmerman (j-zimmerman@onu.edu). I thank all the alumni that I have had the opportunity to meet, and I would like to remind everyone that our door is always open. Feel free to visit “glorious” Ada anytime you wish. Finally, I would like to wish the new officers the best of luck in their duties during this upcoming academic year. AAAE, Brandon Hardin

Worthy Prelate I would like to start off by thanking all of the brothers for their help and support throughout the year. During this year, we all learned that it takes more than one person to achieve success, and it is for that reason that the entire brotherhood should be commended for what we accomplished this past year. We had a successful turnout of both brothers and students at our annual Mentoring Program. Third, fourth, and fifth year pharmacy students participated in the program and helped mentor the younger students. The mentors were available for any questions that the incoming students might have had about the pharmacy program. Most of the upperclassmen from our brotherhood came to the event along with many Kappa Epsilon sisters. Also, we were blessed with a wonderful speech from Professor John Stanovich, the assistant dean and director of the pharmacy outreach program. Professor Stanovich spoke about the importance of being a mentor in his own life and what it takes to be a good mentor. Additionally, our fraternity had the opportunity to become involved with the Arthritis Foundation and other important events due to the active involvement of our president, Noah Sharp. Brothers Brandon Hardin, Dan Dragar, Rob Onder, and Noah Sharp ran a booth at the Senior Health Expo in Lima, Ohio, counseling patients about their arthritis. In December, we became involved in the Jingle Bell Run, the Arthritis Foundation’s largest fundraiser. I would like to thank brothers Noah Sharp, Dan Dragar, and Brad Manning for assisting me. Once again, I would like to thank all of the brothers for a great year. It was a great success for our chapter to expand our professional projects. With the addition of a strong pledge class and the continued strength of our active brothers, we will be able to continue to expand into other areas of professionalism. I look forward to the future of the Alpha Upsilon chapter of Phi Delta Chi. AAAE, Ben Tepfenhart

Worthy Master-at-Arms After my various experiences helping Jon Kline during the 2003-2004 academic year, I was excited to take this office during the spring of 2004. My first pledge class consisted of Cody White and Patrick Dorian. After making the decision to discontinue pledging in the fall, Cody showed the brotherhood his dedication to Phi Delta Chi by giving it another shot in the Spring. Cody and Pat

were extraordinary pledges that gave us nothing but their best, therefore, we are very excited about calling them brothers of Phi Delta Chi. The Fall Class of 2004 was a different story. Andy Kill did an excellent job of recruiting a large fall class of dedicated individuals. Although everyone’s own distinctive qualities and characteristics may have clashed at first, this did not hinder them from making the brotherly bonds we have seen our pledge classes make in the past. All eleven pledges pushed themselves to their limits and proved to us their strong desire to become united as part of the brotherhood. Because of their enthusiasm and willingness to succeed, we are very fortunate to call Ryan Reeves, Patrick Symmonds, David Kilmer, Mohammed Haq, Mike Anderson, Robert Bjurstrom, Matt Likovich, Jeremy Sakel, Brandon Haas, Danny Krall, and Brad Manning our newest brothers of Phi Delta Chi.

“We lift our mugs and drink to drugs & sing until we die. And we will never once forget we’re PHI DELTA CHI.”

AAAE, Kyle Skidmore

Worthy Inner Guard The past year was a good one for Phi Delta Chi. We earned a lot of money, had a lot of fun, and everyone came out of it injury and trouble free. The past year our risk management program worked perfectly as no one got in trouble throughout the year. Also, astonishingly enough, our parties were never cancelled early by the Ada police or school security because everything was run so efficiently and smoothly. The parties were definitely sweet, the house would be packed and everyone would be having a great time. With the help of all of our brothers, we were able to keep everything under control and let everyone have a good time without any worries. Having fun but still maintaining our professional image is very important for Phi Delta Chi. Throughout the past year we had a couple social events. When I first took office last spring, we had a party that had a great turnout and was very fun. Throughout this year, we have had numerous social events that have been awesome. We had a Christmas party with Delta Zeta, a midway party with Sigma Pi at their house, and many other social events. Fundraising was also great this year. We went to work at Cedar Point and got to ride all the rides while earning money. Also, we did a t-shirt sale which was a big success. We earned quite a lot of money from this fundraiser. The next year looks to be promising once again as Brandon Hardin takes over as the Worthy Inner Guard. I appreciate all the help and time the brotherhood has given me and each other which has helped this year be so successful. Finally, I hope next year brings more of the same. AAAE, Marc Pupillo

Sweetheart Report If asked to assign a single world describing my experience with being sweetheart for the second year, I would choose phenomenal. As I said last year, being a part of such an amazing organization is an honor to say the least. I’ve had so much fun these past two years getting to know all of you and growing close to everyone. No matter what, under any circumstance, you are all very respectful to me and everyone around you. As a result, you leave a long lasting, positive, and very powerful impression with everyone that you meet. I have never in my life known a more fun, hard working, and talented group of individuals. Spring break this year in Cancun with a group of the brothers was absolutely amazing! Noah, Kyle, Andy, Hoover, Vandy, Boeke, Bartone, Pupillo, Dave, Steve and friends— Mexico will never be the same without us, haha (in a positive way of course). We had a blast, and I hope to do it again sometime soon! Those are some memories that I will NEVER forget! I can’t thank the entire brotherhood enough for your sympathy and generosity in helping my family and I cope with the (L to R): Jon Hoover, Noah Sharp, Andy Kill, & Daniella Harley death of my father. It meant so much to see such a wonderful representation during one of the hardest times of my life. To Ben, Noah, Adam and Jon—my sincerest thanks go out to you for your presence at my father’s calling hours and funeral. It meant more to my family and I than I think you will ever understand. Andy—you truly are a blessing not only to me, but to my entire family. It took a lot out of you to drive 3 ½ hours to and from Ashtabula numerous times that weekend just to be a shoulder to cry on for my family and I. I honestly can’t begin to thank you enough for everything that you’ve done. You are an angel and I love you more than words can say! To Dr. McCurdy—thank you so much for being such a positive influence and an empathetic listener for me in this matter. You have been such a help, and I cannot even begin to thank you for the many favors you have done. You are such a great person, advisor, and friend. You mean so much to my family and I. In conclusion, thank you so much for giving me this opportunity for the second year in a row! I hope that I didn’t let you guys down and just wanted to say that I had a lot of fun! I love you all and look forward to seeing all of you in your very successful futures! Your Sweetheart, Daniella Harley

Advisor Reports Dr. Bob McCurdy, Advisor Exciting Times

As long as we are true brothers, we are brothers for life.

These are exciting times for the College of Pharmacy and Phi Delta Chi. The College continues to enjoy outstanding success in every aspect of our program. We are attracting an unprecedented number of highly qualified students and our graduates are excelling on the licensing exam and in their professional practice setting. The College is planning to break ground this spring on a major addition to our physical facilities. The approximately 20,000 square feet in the two story addition will add much needed classroom space along with faculty office and research laboratories. Fund raising efforts are now under way and leadership gifts have already been provided by Dr. Vern Hakes and Dr. Ervin Pierstorf, longtime supporters of pharmacy education at ONU. The Faculty is fully staffed for the first time in several years and our new faculty (4) are bringing great credentials and enthusiasm to our college. This fall, we will be visited by representatives from ACPE, who will review our program and make recommendations for continued accreditation. With new competition at the University of Findlay and a potential new pharmacy program at NEOUCOM in Rootstown, Ohio, ONU needs to continue its pattern of strength in teaching and experiential learning. Phi Delta Chi, as the only pharmacy fraternity at ONU, continues to grow and deal with the challenge of size and effectively maintaining a brotherhood with a house that is woefully under-sized for their needs. Preliminary planning for new housing that could accommodate interested greek organizations is moving forward with the expectation of a formal construction announcement that will probably precede publication of this article. Alumni support will be vital for successful planning and occupancy of any new housing for the fraternity. The college is in great shape, the fraternity is as big as it has probably ever been, and prospects for the future are exciting. Come back and see us some time. Bob McCurdy’65 Assistant Dean

Dr. David Kinder, Advisor Time seems to be passing tremendously rapidly these days. I seem to be busier than I have ever been in my life – thought it would start to slow down once I reached my current status in the College, but alas, it has not. I say this by way of apology to the brothers of PDC, as I would like to be so much more involved. I do attempt to attend brotherhood meetings of course, and I did manage to have the weekend free where we heard the architect proposals for new housing and was able to attend that. I must confess however that had I not become a Professor in Pharmacy, I would likely have become an architect. As the brotherhood has grown these past few years, it speaks of a tremendous effort put forth to recruit new brothers to our fold. The new brothers are certainly of high quality, and I hope of high motivation for both professional and social goals. There are a few issues that need to be addressed by the whole brotherhood, but I am confident that this will occur in a very timely and professional manner with the charge being lead by the younger members of PDC. But I thought I would take this time to say what I would like to see happen in the coming year – sort of a goal setting series of thoughts. I would like to see the brothers, as they pass to alumni status, stay involved with the active brothers. It is difficult for many of the active brothers to make contact with the alumni, and one reason seems to be that of fear (or shyness, perhaps?). It will take a deal of patience and prodding by the alumni (that is, you guys who are graduating) to get an interaction going. And you, the active brothers, need to be receptive to the gestures that alumni make, as they are trying to stay connected to the brotherhood. Typically, I have seen brothers who have moved to alumni status feel dissociated from their old group, in part because they are no longer on campus, and in part because they fear that new brothers will not have much in common with them. It will take an effort by everyone to maintain this relationship, which in the current general climate regarding attitudes among school administrators, is important if our most excellent organization will survive. I would like to see the brothers succeed in obtaining a good house. The current house supplied by the University is deplorable. Several efforts have been made on the part of the brothers to improve our lot, and it has been noticed favorably by certain among the administration. Keep up the effort, and it will succeed. I would like to see more outreach from the brothers into the community. Outreach can be both physical and educational. There are several in PDC who are quite civic minded, and wish to have an impact on the community with projects. Give these brothers support, by combining with them to help further good pharmacy communication. And lastly, I would like to see more of the brothers – to get to know you. I have had some of you stop by to chat. I love this. I am often too busy for words, but I still like to chat with you. After all, not only am I one of your professors, and deeply concerned about your success not only in the program, but also in the world, but I am also a brother – scary huh? So, I am looking forward to a very productive year, where I can interact with more of you, perhaps come to a party or two for the socialization, and get to know you much better. To a good year, Cheers! Dr. K

As Scholarship Chair of the Alpha Upsilon chapter of Phi Delta Chi, I am extremely pleased to bring you all great news about our chapter. For Winter Quarter, 2004-2005, our chapter had a term GPA of 3.12, higher than all other male fraternities, higher than all independents, all campus, and all independent men and all Greeks. Our accumulative GPA currently stands at 3.13, again higher than all those listed above. I am especially proud of these numbers because our chapter’s membership ranges from true 18 year old freshman to 24 year old sixth year pharmacy majors. It is a great accomplishment for our fraternity to be so strong scholastically as it shows how strong the brotherhood is, making sure that nobody falls through the cracks. In fact, for this past quarter, there was not a single brother whose GPA was below 2.0, again proving aforementioned statements. We have won the President’s award, which is given to the fraternity with the highest GPA, 11 of our last 12 years, including the last 6 years in a row and are on track for yet another year. Congratulations to all brothers for working hard in school; the results are astounding! Keep the good work up! AAAE, Chet Kaczor

Fundraising Report This year we have been fortunate enough to have many successful fundraisers. The year started with a continuing education program sponsored by Pfizer. Shortly after the CE program, several brothers attended the 2nd annual Cedar Point fundraiser in the fall. Brothers had responsibilities that ranged from food services to sanitation for a half a day, allowing some free time to roam the park at night. Finally, our newest idea for a fundraiser was a pharmacy t-shirt sale. The shirts had the ever infamous saying, “It’s not the size of the mortar and pestle, it’s how you grind.” The fundraisers brought in over $6,500 allowing for sizable donations towards our philanthropy, St. Jude’s, and the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund. Service Report Since I have become a brother of Phi Delta Chi, I have discovered the importance of community service. Our chapter has been very active in the past with service events. As committee chair of service projects, I felt that I had a duty to continue this important part of our fraternity. It was very important to me to have the full support of the brotherhood. My goal was to incorporate as many brothers as possible into every service event. Since I have been Service Project Chair for the last year, we have been able to participate and complete nine service events. The events ranged from our Non Food Drive to adopting two children from the Student Council Angel Tree for Christmas. Our service events this year have impacted many individuals and families, not only in the Ada community but also throughout the nation. Our annual Non Food Drive was once again a success. We were able to battle through the snow and bad weather to make a substantial donation to the Ada Food Pantry. The donations of hygienic items will be able to benefit multiple families that are in need. This past year the world has been filled with troublesome times and numerous natural disasters. The Alpha Upsilon chapter felt that we should help in any way that we could. Through multiple fundraising events, the brotherhood was able to make several donations to needy causes. Our chapter donated to the Phi Mu Delta charity to a needy family, along with a donation to the Our Lady of Lourdes’ program to help the Ada community. The brotherhood reached out past our community to support the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund benefiting the hurricane victims of the past year. I would like to thank my service committee and all the brothers that helped out with the projects this last year. I would also like to send out my appreciation to the Ada community in supporting our Non Food Drive. Whether the brotherhood was together for roadside cleanups for Adopt-A-Highway or donating their time to shop for two needy children for Christmas, our chapter grew closer and strengthened the bonds of our friendships while being able to give something back to the community that has given us so much. We will continue to support the Ohio Northern University and Ada communities in the future; this truly is the meaning of Alterum Alterius Auxilio Eget. AAAE, Kevin Fuschetto

Professional Projects Continuing Education Program

A Man Should First Direct Himself In The Way He Should Go; Only Then Should He Instruct Others ~Buddha

On Sunday, October 24th, our chapter held a continuing education program open to all pharmacists in the state of Ohio. We had 77 registered pharmacists attend the 3 hour program, which consisted of a one hour talk by a Pfizer representative regarding dyslipidemia, and a two hour presentation by Bill Winsley of the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy. Mr. Winsley’s presentation topic was “Updates on Ohio Drug Laws”. The program raised $177 for our chapter’s philanthropy, St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital. Duties for the program included arranging the speakers, reserving the dining hall for lunch that was provided, and mailing out over 1500 invitations to Ohio Northern University alumni of the college of pharmacy.

Jingle Bell Run On Saturday, December 11th, Phi Delta Chi, along with Kappa Epsilon and Society of Medical Professionals, held the Jingle Bell 5K Run, a fundraiser benefiting the Lima Branch of the Arthritis Foundation. Together we raised over $100 and provided refreshments at the awards ceremony in the south gym of Kinghorn. For our sponsorship of the event, we were responsible for working tables in McIntosh at both lunch and dinner, collecting money the Thursday and Friday prior to the race, as well as volunteering time the day of the race. In the end, our local branch of the Arthritis Foundation raised over $8000 with the help of other ONU students as well as outside contributions. We will be involved again next Christmas to help this organization which benefits people close to the ONU campus.

Senior Expo On Sunday, October 10th, Noah Sharp, Brandon Hardin, Dan Dragar, and Robert Onder, represented the Lima branch of the Arthritis Foundation at the annual Senior Expo, held in the Lima Civic Center. The expo held representatives from various medical and social services, as well as other businesses of interest to seniors. By helping the Arthritis Foundation, we 2004-2005 Window Display were able to inform seniors of various services the Arthritis Foundation provides, such as medical equipment, mobility devices, and contacts of physicians specialized in various arthritis issues. In

addition, we informed seniors of an upcoming program in coordination with St. Rita’s Hospital, addressing multiple daily issues of arthritis such as body mechanics and the variety of drug options available. The Lima Branch of the Arthritis Foundation holds several events annually benefiting the community, such as a summer camp for children and teenagers afflicted with arthritis, the Jingle Bell Run fundraiser, as well as the senior expo.

Mentorship Program On Thursday, September 16th, Phi Delta Chi, along with the college of pharmacy, sponsored its annual mentorship program. This program gave all freshman pharmacy students the opportunity to meet with pharmacy upperclassmen to answer any questions they may have. It gave the upperclassmen the opportunity to speak to the freshman providing them with advice and guidance about life as a pharmacy student. We were honored to have Professor John Stanovich, Assistant Dean, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the program. He gave a very informative and interesting speech about mentoring and what it means to be a role model. It was a wonderful time for pharmacy students of all ages to spend time together.

Health Care Screening Phi Delta Chi, Phi Lambda Sigma, and Kappa Epsilon teamed up to sponsor a Health Care Screening in Lima, Ohio, at the Lima Mall. Blood glucose, blood pressure, total cholesterol levels, and 10-year cardiovascular risk assessments were all completed at this screening. Pharmacy students were able to acquire practical knowledge, working with real patients and learning from those experiences while educating patients on their health status. Approximately 90 people were screened in about three hours making this program a huge success for all involved.

On Saturday, April 23rd, 2005, our brotherhood joined together at Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Cleveland, OH, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our chapter. We had a great turnout of both brothers and alumni to help us celebrate this milestone. The event began with a dinner prayer led by Cody White. Dinner and desert were followed by awards and speeches hosted by Jacob Zimmerman. Larry Hildebrand and Eric Schmidt spoke of their former experiences with the fraternity. Previous WCC, Noah Sharp, highlighted the past year and newly elected WCC, Shawn Fellows, gave his outlook for the next year noting our achievements and the need for continued dedication from the brotherhood. The awards were as follows: Brother of the Year: Noah Sharp Professional Brother of the Year: Grant Walliser Legend: Chet Kaczor Distinguished Alumni: Chris McCurdy Highest GPA: Kent Shipley Most Improved GPA: Shawn Fellows Couple Most Likely to get Married: Kevin Fushcetto & Erin Eliser Pat Krane Award: Chris Paxos Mountain Dew Award: Erin Eliser Couple Most Likely to use W & C: Jon Hoover & Beth Beachy Mike Franklin Douche Bag Award: Jeff Bartone Most Whipped Couple: Eric Youngblood & Christy Powell Drunk of the Year: Ben Tepfenhart Horse’s Ass: Brandon Hardin At the conclusion of the banquet, everyone made their way to the dance floor for a night of good times and brotherhood. Despite suffering the typical Ohio weather of snow in April, everyone had a good time and hoped to continue the tradition for years to come. We are all thankful to the alumni who attended and those who contributed.

Road Trips APhA This past April, I (Jake Zimmerman) had the opportunity to attend the APhA meeting in Orlando, FL. I, along with over 20 other ONU students, attended meetings on how to improve our ASP chapter by implementing new programs to promote patient awareness of various disease states. As a result of this trip, we are now in the process of launching Operation Diabetes within the community to help educate the public on the dangers and risks associated with uncontrolled diabetes. We will also be providing screenings to help detect those at risk. While in Orlando, I was able to meet with many brothers from other PDC chapters across the country. Although time conflicts prevented me from attending any Phi Delt sponsored events, I did have the opportunity to swing by the PDC booth on the convention floor and visit with some national and regional officers. I look forward to attending next year’s meeting.

OPA This past April, more than 15 brothers had the opportunity to attend the Ohio Pharmacists’ Association annual meeting at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The conference, which ran April 15th-17th, was well attended by over 300 pharmacy students from all four Ohio Schools of Pharmacy along with hundreds of Ohio Pharmacists. ONU students won the annual Pharmacy Student Olympics at Damons on Saturday evening. The team was lead by brother Chet Kaczor (P5) and consisted of many P4 and P5 brothers that were also in attendance. A special thanks goes out to our honorary brother, Dom Bartone, and his wife, who made it financially possible for all brothers to attend.

This just in….

With the support of our brotherhood, P2 Kyle Gustafson was able to raise upwards of $450 for Relay for Life by shaving his head at the event.

Leader Development Seminar (LDS)

Hail to Phi Dex

On August 4th-8th, we (Chris Paxos & Grant Walliser) traveled to Kansas City, MO to partake in Phi Delta Chi’s 2004 Leader Development Seminar. Our days began with informal meetings discussing various topics ranging from basic fraternity functions to implementing new strategies for leadership development within a chapter. More importantly, this gave us a wonderful opportunity to meet (Top): Chris Paxos, Grant Walliser (Bottom): Garrod (Alpha Mu), Marie, Nicole (Delta) brothers from across the country. The opportunity allowed us to put faces with our national officers and spend time with one of Alpha Upsilon’s own alumnus, Jeff Gross. We also enjoyed meeting and spending time with Delta, a fellow regional chapter, whether it was in class or at happy hour. The seminar wrapped up with a formal brotherhood and awards ceremony. We look forward to seeing everyone again this summer at Grand Council in San Antonio, TX.

Delta Chapter Visit Ada, OH: Wow

(L to R):Nicole (Delta), Song You (GV President for Communications), & Grant Walliser at LDS in Kansas City, MO.

The title says it all, Ada, OH: Wow. That was the initial reaction after a seven hour drive was endured by Brother Bouton and Brother Peterson. What else could there have been to say when one is blessed with the sight that is the bustling “metropolis” that is Ada? The “city” is so large that not even the guy at the gas station could tell us how to get to Ballard Avenue, which by the way, lacks a street sign designating it as such. So we

drove around, trying our best to get lost, and failing miserably since there is only one major road. We took some pictures of the sights downtown, and, when it had been determined that we could not distinguish green roofing from black at night, we headed over to the PDC house after grabbing some food (at a random place that turned out to be the best restaurant in town!) After being warmly welcomed by our Alpha Upsilon brothers, (except for the fact that one brother saw us, and turned around and walked back out of the house), we prepared for the grand tour of the house, and Ada itself (there were just too many things to see the first time around). After experiencing the sights, Jake drove us back to the house (Ace Ventura style via a road that had been closed down) to participate in the initiation of 11 new brothers. Upon our return to the house, it was established that in fact, there were only two of us, (Diana was ill unfortunately – thanks Steve‌.) and things got underway. A few hours later, we welcomed our new brothers into Phi Delta Chi. After initiation wrapped up, we went to the Regal Beagle to celebrate. Ada's bar (singular) was quite entertaining and both Brothers Bouton and Peterson had a great time, despite leaving with lung cancer and emphysema. We (L to R): Abby (Delta), Chris Paxos, & Nicole (Delta) at our fall wrapped up the night pledge class initiation. with a crazy game of poker, and we lost it all. A word of advice: never listen to Grant when he tells you he doesn't know how to play. After he cleaned out everyone except David, we decided to call it a night. The next day before we Wisconsinites headed back, we went on a quick drive to the next town over for lunch. There was such a wide variety of restaurants that we had some trouble deciding where to eat, but after much deliberation we stopped at Burger King. We had quite a few laughs, and even picked up a souvenir for Diana! Then, sadly, our time in Ohio was over. We packed up the car and headed back to Madison, but not without stopping for Dunkin' Donuts on the way! (Did you know they make jelly-filled donut holes?) The trip to Ohio was a great one, and although Ada compares to Madison in the way a bucket compares to an ocean, it was a fantastic place to visit. We can't wait to see our Alpha Upsilon brothers again soon! AAAE, Abby Bouton and Nicole Peterson

Pledge Reports (From 551 to 566) Fall Pledge Class 2004

Extinction of self for the good of all.

Even though none of us planned on joining a fraternity when we arrived at Ohio Northern University, we now realize that pledging Phi Delta Chi was one of the best decisions we have ever made. We all thought that fraternities were made up of guys who merely partied and hazed pledges. Our opinions soon changed when we began to meet the brothers at various social events. We found a group of well-rounded guys dedicated to scholastics, honor, respect, and most importantly, each other. We all decided that this was something in which we were interested and accepted our bids for membership. Our opinions further improved when pledging began. There were many ups and downs, and at many points we all were at odds with each other. But at the end of each day, brothers and pledge brothers were always there for one another to answer questions and help out. We found benefits of brotherhood, including help with classes, getting to know the campus, and having fun. Hours of hanging out together (Back row): Mohammed Haq, Michael Anderson, Matt cultivated friendships that will Likovich, Jeremy Sakel, Brandon Haas. last a lifetime, and the best is (Middle Row): Pat Symmonds, David Kilmer, Rob Bjurstrom, Andy Kill (WVC). yet to come. Some of us did not realize (Front Row): Ryan Reeves, Danny Krall, Brad Manning. the time, effort, or the commitment it would take to become a Phi Delta Chi brother. Every week we would get together for a few hours in a dorm room and accomplish tasks that were given to us by our worthy brothers. In the beginning it was fun, but soon it became strenuous and difficult. Tempers arose, and fights began among us. This is to be expected from strangers; however, strangers do not fix their quarrels, but brothers always do. This is one of the most important aspects that we have learned. Pharmacy is a profession in which we will have to collaborate with many different individuals. The bonds of brotherhood will help us cooperate with people that are different from us. Even in an unsure future, we know that our brotherhood will stay as strong as it ever was and that we can always rely on each other.

Spring Class 2004 Bid acceptance night in February was the first time that the five of us really got to begin to learn about each other. From the start, we were all apprehensive and unsure of what to expect from the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Chi. However, little did we know that it would be one of the most amazing, rewarding, and irreplaceable experiences of each of our lives. We were all shaky during the first pledge meeting that we had at the house; however, Cody eased our worries by explaining pretty much how things were going to run and we got our first assignment, learning some very important information about the fraternity. That was where it all began. The next eight weeks seemed to fly by as we had much to learn about Phi Delta Chi, its brothers, its morals, and each other. We took part in many different activities, all which helped us become more educated about the brothers and the fraternity. Although at the time we may have questioned what the benefits of these activities would be, we soon found out that they all instilled lessons of respect, honor, and responsibility. The five of us all tried to spend as much time together as we could. As time (L to R): Mike Holt, Stuart Deal, Nathan Evanoski, Kyle Melin, Zack progressed, we learned Schrensky more and more about each other and found that all of us had more in common with each other than we would have ever thought. Sometimes things got a little rough. Balancing class work with our pledge activities was sometimes difficult, but we all helped each other out. We not only worked on fraternity stuff together, we worked on our class work together also. The motto “Each needs the help of the other, continuously came into play. Whenever any of us needed anything, we knew that we could rely on not only the brothers, but especially each other. Not only did we learn more as the days went by, our bonds continuously got stronger and stronger. During pledging, our personal definitions of brotherhood were each strengthened more and more. Numerous lessons were learned, but the greatest was extinction of self for the good all and obedience to the will of the Grand Fraternity. Eight weeks of pledging taught us all that brotherhood was of the utmost importance. This idea became stronger and stronger in each of our minds. Our pledging experience with Phi Delta Chi was definitely one of the most incredible experiences of each of our lives. The bonds that were made, the lessons that were learned, and the experiences that were had will all be carried with us for the rest of our lives. Pledging Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Chi was something each one of us will never forget.

The Village of Ada

(Above): On Saturday, April 2nd, 2005, fire ripped through downtown Ada, displacing many university faculty, students, and local businesses. Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze. (Right):This past January an ice storm swept across NW Ohio, leaving many without power and forcing the university to shut down for a lengthy 5 day weekend.

(Below): On September 25th, 2005, ONU’s DialRoberson stadium was dedicated in a ceremony including speeches from President Baker and OSU’s Jim Tressel.

FORMAL 2005

CLEVELAND,OHIO

Editors’ Reflection Grant – This looks good. I mean, real good. Hey everybody, come see how good the Alley Oop looks! Chris – I don’t know if you know this, but…this Alley Oop is kind of a big deal. People know about it. Brian – Seriously, this Alley Oop is good but it is filling. Chris – Yo, compadre, did you just throw an Alley Oop out your window? Brian – I love cover….I love dedication page. Grant – Brian, are you just looking at pages in the Alley Oop and saying you love them? Brian – I love Alley Oop. Grant – Do you really love the Alley Oop or are you just saying that because you’re reading it. Brian – I love Alley Oop…I love Alley Oop! Chris – It stings the nostrils! (Front to Back): Chris Paxos, Grant Walliser, & Brian Haynes

It’s amazing how much one can accomplish using only Microsoft Word and some imagination. Then again, it’s amazing how many good ideas get thrown out because it’s only Microsoft Word. When we decided to head up the Alley Oop committee last year, we had one goal in mind: change. However, even with the need for change, the intensity of cardio and the stark limitations of Word left many of our ideas on the cutting room floor like the deleted scenes of Anchorman. We hope we have succeeded in changing the look and quality of our Alley Oop. Furthermore, we hope the pride we have for this edition of the Alley Oop reflects the pride we have for our fraternity. This enthusiasm needs to continue in both the Alley Oop and our chapter, and we are confident the next 50 years will build upon the rich traditions of our first fifty years.
