Exhibition showcases ‘Coronation Linens’

A new Coronation-themed exhibition has opened in Lisburn that showcases both the area’s rich linen heritage and its strong Royal connections.

To mark the Coronation of King Charles III, the city’s Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum has installed a new exhibition called, ‘Coronation Linens’. It draws upon Ulster’s rich linenproducing heritage to showcase cloths woven to celebrate previous Royal coronations.

The exhibition features a number of coronationrelated cloths from the museum’s extensive collection which covers a 250-year period from the reign of George II (1727-60) through to the twentieth century.

The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Scott Carson said: “I am delighted that our latest exhibition reflects the contribution of the local linen industry to previous coronations.

Linen tableware was often woven to commemorate the crowning of a new monarch or other important royal occasions.

We are very proud that we can mark the upcoming coronation here in the museum with a display of linen items which were produced in the local area”.

The Chair of the council’s Leisure and Community Development Committee, Councillor Aaron McIntyre said: “I am delighted to see this exhibition on display at the museum. It is an important showcase of the skill and artistry of Ulster’s damask weavers, who for centuries produced the finest linen cloths for Kings and Queens. The exhibition’s centrepiece, the ‘Waringstown Cloth’ is

a damask linen tablecloth which was woven for the coronation of George II in 1727 and is one of the most important pieces of early Irish damask linen. We are very excited to see it on display.”

The Chair of the council’s King’s Coronation Working Group, Councillor Hazel Legge said: “This wonderful exhibition at the museum forms part of a wider programme of events which will

celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. Our wide range of events includes the Mayor’s Carnival Parade and Family Fun Day and a Service of Thanksgiving in the Cathedral.” The ‘Coronation Linens’ exhibition at the Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum in Market Square in Lisburn runs until 1 June and is open from 9.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Saturday. Admission is free.

NI Water have donated a Waterbutt to Largymore Primary School, Lisburn. Many schools are seeking to improve their outdoor learning environments to enhance pupil’s wellbeing and mental health alongside improving the sustainability of the school grounds. Waterbutts are a great way of collecting rainwater, which can then be used to water plants encouraging pupils to save water and look after the natural environment.

As we all know Northern Ireland gets plenty of rain; however this rainwater has to be cleaned at our treatment works before it goes into our taps. Using a Waterbutt is a more efficient way to capture and use rainwater and by doing so will help ensure there’s enough water for everyone now and in

Over £100,000 UK funding used to develop local spaces

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has secured £103,752 from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

This has funded improvements to the opens spaces at Lough Moss, Carryduff and Billy Neill MBE Country Park, Dundonald to meet community needs. It will also assist with its Ash Dieback Action Plan in Lisburn.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business,

and people and skills.

Christine Robinson, Head of the Northern Ireland Area within the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities (DLHUC) attended the official opening of the new Lough Moss Community Hub by Councillor Aaron McIntyre, Leisure & Community Development Chairman recently. They were joined by elected members and community representatives.

Councillor Aaron McIntyre, Leisure &

Community Development Chairman speaking about the enhancements at Lough Moss said: “I am delighted with the creative utilisation of the former play area by the council. It demonstrates true partnership working with the Carryduff community.

To meet local intergenerational needs we now have a multi-use games area to offer recreational opportunities to our younger residents and

sport enthusiasts to use freely 24/7. “A sensory garden designed to appeal to the senses of taste, touch, sound, smell and sight while providing a calming and therapeutic experience for all abilities has been established. And in terms of sustainability and supporting local biodiversity we have also created an area for use by residents of the Carryduff community and ourselves. This area has raised beds, a potting

shed, a poly tunnel, and composting and storage areas. By ‘growing local’ the community will be able to assist with the provision of floral delights for displays within this rural town.”

At Billy Neill MBE Country Park one existing pathway has been replaced with a durable surface to ensure full accessibility at this popular open space for everyone. The final project facilitated by this funding is the placement of Yew trees

in Lisburn New Cemetery to replace the former Ash tree belt in this facility which borders a main road.

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s three projects meet the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities (DLHUC) priority of ‘Communities and Place’. They have enhanced the infrastructure at Lough Moss and Billy Neill MBE Country Park and the boundary of its main cemetery.

Community spirit on show at this year’s Mayor’s Majestic Carnival Parade & Family Fun Day

It was fantastic to see thousands of families and individuals lining the streets of Lisburn recently to enjoy the majestic celebrations at Mayor Carson’s Majestic Carnival Parade and Family Fun Day.

Local school and community groups have worked hard over recent months to ensure the parade was a colourful spectacle weaving its way through Lisburn City Centre. They were supported by Streetwise Carnival Productions and ISLAND Arts Centre to choreograph the impressive dance routines, stiltwalkers

and make an array majestic costumes including everything from octopuses in crowns to brightly coloured butterflies all to mark the upcoming Coronation of King Charles III. Commenting on the carnival parade, the Mayor Councillor Scott Carson said: “My family and I were proud to join with all ages and abilities of the Lisburn and Castlereagh community in the carnival parade through our city to entertain the crowd of onlookers. My ‘little Mayor Maids’ were very excited to be dressed as princesses for the day. It was a pleasure to see local sports clubs give a demonstration of their skills as they participated in the parade from gymnastics to football and BMX cycling.

Thank you to Lisburn City Old Vehicles Club for starting the parade off.

“This fantastic community event not only brings everyone together but also provided support to my Mayoral Charities: Atlas Centre, Lisburn and Helping Hand – Royal Hospital Belfast Charity.

The generosity of our residents was demonstrated once again to help provide support to these two worthy causes.”

The weather may not have been bright but the spectators were as they enjoyed the vibrant procession of fantastic carnival floats, colourful characters and exciting performers. Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council was delighted to once again welcome back to the parade familiar faces of Freemen and Freewomen of the city, Salsa NI, Samba Band and the Fire Cadets.

To ensure a fun day for all the family the festivities continued with an epic day

of entertainment in Wallace Park. There was musical entertainment, facepainting, science and sensory shows, hands-on arts and craft workshops, horticultural and eco-craft stands and kite building to name but a few. The vast crowd enjoyed the G-Force Amusements, Phil’s petting farm and displays from the Ulster Aviation Society. A myriad of pristine classic cars delighted automotive enthusiasts. For those who love to play sport or keep fit there was a climbing wall and sports activities on offer alongside boxing displays from our local Canal Boxing Club.

R-Space Gallery Lisburn is awarded a £99,352 grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to implement the 2023 Linen Biennale.

R-Space Gallery has received a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £99,352 for an exciting heritage project, Northern Ireland’s Linen Biennale, which will take place in Lisburn and throughout NI.

Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, this project will feature a full programme of events, initiatives and community outreach that will celebrate the heritage, and future, of linen and flax on the Island. The 2023 Linen Biennale will run from 26 July - 26 August 2023 and partners will include PRONI, Northern Ireland National Museums, and Portview Trade Centre.

Supported through The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will create employment, projects, and new stories of the heritage of linen that we can all enjoy on this Island.

Artists, makers, growers and producers are all standing by to partner on the project, which will be organised and administrated from R-Space Gallery in Lisburn.

R-Space Gallery hosts contemporary visual Art and Craft exhibitions, initiates Heritage Projects and provides Public Engagement Programmes in the heart of Lisburn City, Northern Ireland. Their ambition is to increase access, understanding and enjoyment of contemporary visual arts, crafts, design and

other related arts activities.

They collaborate with a diverse range of excellent and challenging artists and designers working in different media, providing audiences from a wide range of educational, social and cultural backgrounds with different points of access to the arts.

The first Linen Biennale in 2018 was a great success,

bringing international visitors from the US and Europe to celebrate and share the unifying story of Irish Linen: its past, present, and future. Having postponed the 2020 Biennale due to the pandemic, the organisation is more than delighted to see this, its long overdue return.

Commenting on the award, Robert Martin,

Curator of R-Space, said: “Irish Linen is a story that has travelled the world. We want it to continue to be part of the future history of Ireland. We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players and are confident the project will celebrate the heritage of flax and linen and inspire future generations in its revival.”

What do you call a flock of W arblers? a chorus? o r a W arble?

Over centuries people have given names, sometimes called collective nouns, to groups or flocks of birds.

A murder of crows.

A gaggle of geese. A charm of goldfinches (my favourite). But the question I ask about warblers is a wee bit tongue in cheek because we seldom see them in flocks. Yes, they must ‘flock together’ to some extent when they fly here every spring from southern Europe or Africa and return in late summer, but, at least while they’re here to breed, they live separate, territorial lives.

There are many warbler species, but I’m only going to cover the three most common, those you’re most likely to hear, chiffchaff, willow

warbler and blackcap. And when I say ‘hear’ rather than ‘see’, that’s because they’re very good at not being seen. They’re small, and particularly chiffchaff and willow warbler plumage is a mix of muted green, brown and yellow, enough to fade into the foliage of the woodland where they live. Even blackcaps, which, yes, do have a black cap (females have a brown one) are hard to spot.

But their songs and calls are, for me, the essential sounds of spring when trees are in leaf. Of course, I love the songs of robins, blackbirds and thrushes,

often performed where we can see them, but warblers are something else, their songs and calls echoing through woodland and waterside scrub as they proclaim their territory and seek females to join them.

I particularly love the chiffchaff song, even if it’s just pretty much a repetition of its name… chiffchaff, chiffchaff… because it carries such a long way. The willow warbler’s song is much more ‘musical’, a trilling descent, repeated over and over. But the star is the blackcap, with a melodious song which is the reason for its alternative name, the

nightingale of the north.

If you want to listen to their songs, they are available at https://www. british-birdsongs.uk/

alphabetical/. Better still, get out into the countryside this spring and listen to them ‘live’. JVA

Companion p lanting

In the broadest sense of these words, any plant that you choose to plant in your garden, in a pot, in an allotment or out in an open space, is a companion plant. It is a lovely process to watch that special tree/ rose /flowering shrub etc you planted in memory of a passed loved one, growing, blossoming, filling your life with beauty and delight even though they have moved on. We choose a plant because we love its shape, it’s colour or maybe because it will feed us or shelter us or act as a screen to block out noise and pollution. Who cannot say

that the sight of those first snowdrops you planted years ago, trembling in the harsh icy wind surrounded by snow, don’t fill your heart with hope for the year ahead. At this time of year in May, the hedges burst with life - golden gorse, first white blackthorn then cascades of white hawthorne, white and pink cherry blossom all set in a symphony of lime greens! Those trees which we see every day through all storms and sunny days are companions too.

Modern research is showing that trees communicate via their roots and a mycelium system

of fungi across the forest floor. Trees are companions to each other; if there is an insect infestation in one tree the message is sent, via the fine roots and fungi across the wood, to release more insecticide into the leaves of all the other trees to control the insects. Trees also release phytoncides, defensive compounds like a plant anti- biotic into the air which give us a feel good factor similar to serotonin when we take ‘a walk in the woods’. Phytoncides decrease inflammation and reduce the activity of cancer cells as well as aiding lung capacity and lowering

blood pressure. Gardeners have discovered many combinations of plants which help each other grow either by controlling pests or by improving the soil. The classic companion planting is to grow french marigolds with your roses and tomatoes to repel nemotodes and white fly. Strong aromatic herbs such as rosemary, sage and wormwood protect nearby carrots or cabbages as do the onion family, nasturtiums protect apple trees from woolly aphids, peppermint strewn or grown in pots between cabbages protects them from cabbage

white butterfly, a mulch of pine needles increases the strength and flavour of strawberries.........The king of the forest, the oak is found to be hospitable to other trees and may be the best friend of every gardener-oak leaf mulch or bark repels slugs and snails! Always harvest your plants kindly, they are sentient like ourselves. They provide us with so much, food, medicine, shelter, homes... we can be a companion to plants too by planting more of them!!

Make your land work twice as hard with solar

No one in the rural community needs to be told that the current economy is hard on farmers. Costs are high, profits are uncertain and the future feels very unclear. Leasing land for solar and storage is a sustainable way to secure long-term, index-linked income for your farm for decades to come, and you can still farm the land once the panels are in place.

Solar farms are the perfect place to graze sheep, so you will find that by renting your land for solar you’re able to make the acres work twice as hard – income from the panels, and income from your flock. Solar panels provide shade and shelter for sheep, while the secure fencing offers protection from predation and harassment. Research

across the world, from America to Australia, suggests that solar grazing is a win for your sheep, and your bottom line.

So it’s not surprising that solar is becoming an increasingly popular option for farmers and landowners across the UK – it’s weather-proof, comes with decades of guaranteed income and has the added benefit of having significant positive impacts for the land, the local community and the environment. Lightsource bp is leader in UK and Irish solar - we’ve been active in Northern Ireland since 2013, and to date have developed around 60%

of the operational largescale solar in the country.

We’ve got a superb local track record of building relationships that strengthen the rural economy, making us the ideal partner for

any landowner looking to make the most of their land, secure long-term income and contribute to the fight against climate change. Want to know more about how solar can support your

business? Get in touch with our solar experts via northern.ireland@ lightsourcebp.com and 0289 424 0923, or visit www.lightsourcebp.com/uk/ for more information.

Tax-Free Childcare can help working parents pay for registered childcare

Paying for childcare can be a significant expense for working parents. For many families, it can be more than the monthly mortgage or rent. However, most working parents are entitled to financial support towards registered childcare costs, even though many do not realise this.

Tax-Free Childcare is one of the forms of support available to help pay for registered childcare. While uptake of the scheme has previously been low in Northern Ireland, this is now growing and over the last year 30% more families have benefited from using Tax-Free Childcare. While a positive development, there are many more families who are still missing out on support they could be entitled to. Often, parents assume they are not entitled to financial support because they think their household earnings are too high, however this is usually not the case. What is Tax-Free Childcare?

The Tax-Free Childcare scheme is open to parents of children under the age of 12 (or age 17 for children with disabilities) allowing eligible working families to claim 20% of their registered childcare costs, up to £2,000 per child per year, or £4,000 for a child with a disability, from the Government.

To claim Tax-Free Childcare, both parents need to be in employment (or one person in a single parent household), earning between £167 per week (equivalent to 16 hours working at the National Living Wage) and £100,000 per year each. So, for example, a household where each parent is earning £95,000

(combined income of £190,000) would be eligible for support.

Tax-Free Childcare is also available to self-employed parents (where eligible).

Households where one parent is working, and the other parent is in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or certain disability benefits can also qualify.

Unlike some other forms

of support the amount of savings a household has is not taken into account when determining if a parent is eligible for TaxFree Childcare.

Further information

As well as Tax-Free Childcare, there are other schemes which provide support with registered childcare costs (Universal Credit, Childcare Vouchers and Tax Credits), which may be

better for some families. Our team can help parents work out what form of financial support is best for them. If you would like further advice on help with childcare costs contact our Family Benefits Advice Service for free, impartial and confidential advice. I have had a Blast! Is it your turn next?

After 21 amazing years, I have decided to put my Jo Jingles franchise area up for sale.

I was originally looking for a job which I could fit in around my children and where I could combine my love of music, working with young children and connecting with their

parents and carers. I opened my business in Lisburn back in January 2002 with just 3 parent classes and 2 Day Nurseries. Since then, my business has expanded

to include classes throughout my franchise area including Banbridge, Dunmurry, Moira, Newry and everywhere in between!

I have held parent classes in Leisure Centres, Church Halls and Community Centres. I regularly visit Day Nurseries, School Nurseries, Parent and Toddler Groups and offer birthday parties.

Jo Jingles (Lisburn) was the first franchise area in Northern Ireland to provide classes for babies aged 3 months to walking. Our Saturday classes are very popular with working parents who are not free to attend during the week.

The franchise model has enabled me to run my own business, have flexible working hours, enjoy security and support from the Jo Jingles Franchise Head Office as well as camaraderie from fellow franchisees.

I have observed how the regular exposure to music has helped many young children to improve language and speech and develop social skills and friendships.

It’s been the best job ever but it’s time to pass this thriving business onto someone else. Could that person be you? Contact karen@jojingleslisburn. co.uk

Self-care is a hot topic and the ‘spathroom’ is the place to be!

No longer a strictly functional room, demand for stylish and trend-led bathroom fittings and fixtures has firmly taken hold

Bold colour choices and investment in stand-out features such as freestanding baths are coming to the fore and there’s also a touch of nostalgia in chequerboard tiles as the idea of the ‘spathroom’ makes a rapid rise.

Warm metallics

A brushed metallic is a fail-safe finish in a bathroom – softening the shine from brass or gold fixtures mitigates the risk of your space appearing gaudy.

Chequerboard tiles

Chequerboard flooring is part of a wider trend towards vintage references in the home – low-slung 70s style sofas are becoming increasingly popular, rattan used in abundance in homeware, and sweet nostalgic accents like pantries and breakfast bars are returning to our kitchens.

In bathrooms, this is translating to scalloped edges on towels and accessories, sugary pastels and avocado-toned enamel,

and a resurgence of chessboard tiles.

Freestanding baths

The popularity of the freestanding tub gives a sense of how luxurious bathrooms are becoming – this is a design choice geared towards self-care, encouraging more time spent in a state of rest and relaxation.

A freestanding bath by the window can gives the illusion of more space and helps ventilation to prevent mould and mildew.

Spathrooms

Spa-inspired bathrooms, or ‘spathrooms’, is an idea, influenced by the growing popularity of spaces within the home created to support rituals of self-care.

Bathrooms are arguably the most ritualistic room in the home – introduce a chair or small sofa and use warmer textures and fabrics for a luxe feel. Make use of outdoor fabrics which work particularly well in this arena.

Colour drenching

Saturating a space with intense colour creates impact. Statement items like freestanding baths are being used to inject personality and ‘Bright and uplifting colour. Danish pastel interior design is at the forefront of this movement and is characterised by sorbet colours, curves and abstract, whimsical shapes. Homeowners can embrace this uplifting style with square tiles, terrazzo, novel grouting and colourful finishes such as seafoam greens, warm pinks, and clay colours.

Small space solutions

Maximising our ever decreasing floorspace with

clever storage solutions, floating vanity units, and narrow bathroom furniture is a priority for homeowners in 2023.

Homeowners are making the most of the space they have, while conserving heat and water. If floor space is of a premium, make the most of your vertical space and mount larger fixtures onto your walls. Many features – from the toilet and basin to accessories like toilet roll holders and toilet brushes –now come in wall-mounted styles. Lifting everything up off the ground provides extra space and extends your floor outwards, making it look bigger!

Did you know your ankle, knee, hip or back pain could be caused by flat feet and rubbish footwear?

Book a 15 minute consultation with our foot specialist and END your pain today!

Fortunately, there is a natural drug free pain relief solution which could be perfect for you – orthotic shoe inserts!

Orthotic inserts are designed to align the foot into the most anatomically efficient position. They simply fit into your shoe and allow for more normal weight distribution throughout your body, significantly reducing your pain and discomfort and preventing injuries.

If your feet are commonly in an incorrect position, this can cause muscle imbalances and overuse of muscles

- Commonly the knee, hips or lower back muscles which then take the responsibility of helping to properly align your body.

Who needs Orthotic shoe inserts?

There are lots of people who have visited our clinic and benefitted from orthotic inserts, including people with-

• Plantar fasciitis/foot problems

• Heel pain

• Flat feet

• High foot arches

• Arthritis

• Lower leg injuries

• Jobs where people walk lots

• Ankle, knee, shin, back and neck pain

If you have arthritis in your feet, or recognise that you walk with your feet turned out, our custom made orthotic shoe inserts could be a powerful tool to help you ease the imbalances which would ease muscle

tightness and provide pain relief.

Orthotic shoe inserts can be purchased ‘off the shelf’ from lots of retailers, or online, and made in lots of sizes. The problem with ‘off the shelf’ orthotic shoe inserts is that they are generic and not customized to your specific foot structure and therefore very unlikely to provide the correct support you need

to fix your problem. In fact buying ‘off the shelf’ may actually make the problem WORSE!

The alternative is to get custom made orthotic shoe inserts, which we provide at Gav Noble physiotherapy. Our inserts are 100% custom made and built for your feet, which ensures that your foot position and weight distribution is correct. In turn, the muscles causing pain are thus in less demand = pain relief.

To see if custom made orthotics could help you, call 028 9266 6959 to book your FREE consultation.

Places are limited and we are offering the first 5 people who respond this week a 100% free, no obligation consultation. Please mention Lisburn Advertiser when you call.

Hay Fever – What You Should Know

As the warm weather begins to return and the summer holidays come evercloser, it is easy to neglect the potential problems that come about at this time of the year.

Unlike the common cold, hay fever will not pass after a number of weeks and if left untreated, can remain an issue for a matter of months.

Hay fever is usually made worse between late March and September, especially when the weather is warm, humid and windy. This is when the pollen count is at its highest.

Symptoms of hay fever can include sneezing, coughing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy, red or watery eyes, headaches and tiredness. It is particularly dangerous for those who suffer from asthma, as the combination can result in difficulty breathing and shortness of breath.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for hay fever and

it cannot be prevented, however with the right approach the symptoms can be considerably eased. Simple measures such as avoiding grassy areas, showering after you have been outside, keeping windows closed and not drying clothes outside can reduce the amount of pollen being inhaled. For more serious cases, antihistamines and cromoglycates can be taken to prevent an allergic reaction from occurring. Hay fever symptoms are much likely to be worse if the pollen count is particularly high. The pollen count refers to the number of grains of pollen in one cubic meter of air. A low pollen count would consist of less

than 30 grains of pollen in every cubic meter of air whereas a very high pollen count would be 150 grains.

In the majority of cases, symptoms of hay fever only begin when the pollen count is over 50. The pollen count is usually given as part of the weather forecast throughout the summer and spring months.

Most cases of hay fever can be treated with over-

the-counter medication or simply avoiding areas which contain high pollen counts. It is advised the one should only visit their GP when symptoms cannot be controlled after using over-the-counter medication or if you’re suffering from persistent implications of hay fever such as tightness of chest or a worsening of existing conditions such as asthma.

The Presiden T s Pa T h of h o T els Through i reland

I am sure we all caught a glimpse of President Joe Biden on television or in real life recently when he visited these shores.

At EDA Media Group we thought we would trace his roots and path through the wonderful hotels of Ireland.

First stop was the Grand Central Hotel in Belfast where the impressive motorcade rolled in late at night to Bedford Street.

Inspired by Belfast’s original Grand Central Hotel - the glamorous address that once hosted the Beatles and the Rolling Stones was now hosting the President of the free world.

If you are lucky enough to stay here you are right in the middle of the revitalised Northern Irish capital, a few streets from the Europa, in eye-sight of City Hall and part of the emerging Linen Quarter, which harks back to the Victorian age when industrious Belfast was nicknamed “Linenopolis”.

There are splendid views, too, from many of Grand

Central’s 300 rooms, which range from 25-square-metre doubles to 77-square-metres for the suite honouring the hotel’s late founder, Sir William Hastings. We are sure Mr President had the most spectacular views across our great city from the very impressive Observatory.

From Belfast it was a quick jaunt down the road, or by air, to Carlingford where Joe Bidens ancestors left back in the 1800’s for a new life in America.

Their last sighting they would have had was St John’s Castle in Carlingford where the President stood recently waving to the crowds who gathered to catch a glimpse of him.

So to trace his steps there was no better place than to stay in the wonderful Four Seasons Hotel where the mountains meet the sea.

The staff are more than accommodating and the scene overlooking Carlingford Lough is exquisite.

The Four Seasons has a huge choice of rooms to choose from if travelling as a family or as a couple.

They also have a swimming pool and leisure club where you can keep up your fitness while staying. Following that if you are feeling peckish they have a lovely restaurant with an array of choices for kids and adults.

The hotel is just a short drive from both Belfast or Dublin depending on what way you are travelling and offers the perfect place to stay when adventuring around the beautiful town of Carlingford.

The next step on the President’s tour was our capital city, Dublin.

Depending on the kind of stay you want we have a couple of hotels that offer the perfect getaway.

First up is the stunning Merrion Hotel, which sits opposite the Dail where President Biden delivered a speech to the Irish Parliament.

If you want opulence, luxury and an experience to remember then this is what you will get, in abundance.

This five star hotel, located on Upper Merrion Street, has so much class and will provide you with an evening to remember.

On arrival staff take your car and luggage and guide you to reception.

Once checked in the staff give you a brief tour of the hotel, which is steeped in history, before showing you to your room. With over 160 rooms there is a wide selection to choose from whether it’s a king or a suite you will be left in awe at the surroundings of each and every single one.

The detail of decor and array of paintings and artefacts dotted around the hotel is a history lesson in itself. It is like a mini museum which adds a whole other layer to the experience of staying there.

The attention to detail in the bedrooms is second to none with every need being catered for, from the branded straps to keep your charger lead tidy to the low level lighting which guides you round the room in the middle of the night.

The upholstery of the chairs and comfort of the bed linen is exactly what you need for the perfect night sleep.

From the bedrooms to the restaurants the level of detail and standard remains. The Garden Room restaurant located on the ground floor looks out onto a beautiful courtyard, home to a statue of James Joyce. The menu boasts many wonderful choices to please the palette from grilled black sole to succulent lamb and dry aged steaks. Something for everyone.

If you fancy treating yourself some more there is a spa where they offer the best treatments and also an excellent swimming pool to enjoy a few lengths.

All in all the Merrion lives up to its five star rating. It’s one of the most stunning hotels in Dublin and in fact Ireland.

The staff only add to the experience with their

level of expertise in the hospitality industry.

Next stop in Dublin is the Hilton on Charlemont Place, which is equally stunning with its location along the Grand Canal.

We received intelligence that some of President Biden’s entourage stayed in this very hotel during his visit to the capital.

The secret service were said to arrive at the Hilton two weeks prior to the presidential visit to check out the hotel, do background checks on staff and have meticulous checks on the surrounding areas.

You can see why the staff of the most famous man in the world chose the Hilton to stay in because it has

everything you need and more.

The rooms are spacious, comfortable and have all the added extras you need. Low level lighting, bathroom accessories, plenty of charging ports, a large TV and the most comfortable beds.

It is in the perfect location to explore Dublin with a wonderful view over the Grand Canal which is perfect for a stroll.

The restaurant is also perfect for lunch and dinner with plenty of options of meals to choose from.

From pork belly to steaks and burgers there are many options and also a kids menu to suit the little ones.

Located only three miles

away from the Dublin Convention Center, and close to the RDS and Aviva Stadium, the hotel is the perfect location for business and leisure travellers alike. You can also enjoy a workout in the state-of theart Fitness by Precor Gym then see Dublin’s attractions on a Viking Splash Tour or on the Hop on Hop Off tour bus. We know it anyway but we are sure President Biden had the most wonderful visit to Ireland retracing his roots and marking the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. No doubt he will be back very soon to the Emerald Isle to enjoy more of our fantastic hospitality.

Exp E rt r E v E als how to dr E ss as a w E dding gu E st without upstaging and ups E tting th E brid E

The unwritten rules of attending a wedding are generally easy to achieve, with minimal effort: always RSVP, do not bring extra guests, make sure to be on time and most important of all… do not upstage the bride.

Fashion experts at Karen Millen have revealed top tips on ensuring you dress to impress without stealing the limelight from a bride at her wedding. Whether you are the mother of the bride or groom, in the bridal party, or just attending as a plus one, these tips are the perfect guide on how to dress appropriately with style.

Does the bride have preferences?

The first place to start when beginning to look for a wedding guest outfit

is to establish if there is a theme or colour scheme the bride wants guests to stick to. If there is, you are one step closer to finding the perfect dress, and if the bride has not suggested which colours to look for, then politely ask if there are any colours she might want you to avoid wearing. If you let the bride guide you, you will find something perfect.

What colours to avoid: You want to make sure the dress you choose compliments the style

or colour scheme of the wedding, which will probably be common knowledge if you are in the bridal party. Still, if not, there are a few colours that will undoubtedly take away the limelight of the bride unless she has specifically asked you to choose these colours:

• Red: Visually, red is a bold and flashy colour that will immediately draw attention to you, whether that be in person or photographs; if guests surround you in neutrals and a bride in white, you may feel out of place with the tone of the wedding.

• Black: Many brides and grooms opt for a black and white-themed wedding which is perfect if that is the desired look, but wearing a black dress to a neutral wedding would be a bold choice. Black also absorbs heat and will cause you to get hotter faster, so if the location is on the beach or in a warmer season, you probably want to go for a lighter option.

• White: It might be obvious to some but wearing white to a wedding is best to be left to the bride to avoid any upset. Unless the bride gives the go-ahead to wear white or ivory-like colours try options in other light colours, such as pistachio

greens and baby pinks. What colours work well?

The main goal for a wedding guest is to blend in, but this does not mean your outfit has to be dull and drab. The best way to choose what colour dress to wear is to find out what is complimentary to both the wedding and you. By doing this, you will find something you feel confident in and not take anything away from the bride.

Light neutral colours and pastel shades are a go-to as this keeps the aesthetic light and airy and allows guests to experiment with various shades and hues. Having guests in different pastels or neutrals also turns out great in photographs with a wide range of tones bringing the bright white or ivory of the bride’s dress to light.

Jewel tones and earth tones are also fantastic options for guests who have been allowed to wear darker colours but still want to inject some colour.

What silhouettes work well?

Choosing the right dress for your body type can be difficult, especially if you do not like to experiment or try different silhouettes. The best way to learn how to compliment your figure and find something you

feel confident in is to try on as many different styles of dresses as possible. It is also important to remember that even though a particular style or silhouette is in fashion now, it does not mean that it is right for the theme or tone of the wedding.

• Think of the climate – Steer clear from long sleeve dresses and thick coordinating jackets if the wedding you are attending will be held in the warmer months or abroad. Try to opt for breathable fabrics which will keep you cool and comfortable.

• Try flowy fabrics –There is nothing more elegant and effortless than a light and flowy dress as a wedding guest, but just remember to avoid any flowing fabrics that could have a bit of a train!

• Opt for a one-shoulder – One-shoulder dresses are fun and flirty but also ideal for spring and summer weddings as they still allow for breathability.

• Maxi dresses are not off limits – It is fine to go floor length as a wedding guest if the dress is simple enough to blend in. If you are looking for a maxi or midi length dress, avoid purchasing those with big patterns and colours. How do you pick a dress as the mother of the bride

or groom?

It’s best to allow the bride to choose her bridesmaids’ dresses before choosing your dress because you want to blend in with them and wear a complimentary colour to their dresses.

Avoid sequins, extravagant patterns, and outrageous diamonds or jewels; although it is important for you to look your best, it’s also vital to have all eyes on the bride and groom. The same goes for large bold patterns and garish silhouettes; your outfit should be elegant and graceful.

Keeping it classy is also vital, as wearing something too revealing or scandalous could jeopardise the big day. Make sure if you are opting for a shorter dress that the length is appropriate to what the happy couple has specified in their dress code - just as well as if you are opting for a backless or cut-out style dress.

Final tips to remember when choosing the right dress:

• Extravagant dresses, headpieces and trains are a no-go – Let the bride’s dress do all the talking.

• If in doubt, aim for neutrals and pastels – The perfect way to blend in and

still look elegant.

• Avoid being too casual

– Being too casual will have the same impact as wearing something over the top; nothing should take away from the bride.

• Dress to impress in comfort - Do not forget you will be

in this dress for hours, so make sure the dress is flirty, comfortable, versatile and vivacious; you will be wearing this dress all day.

Contraception made simple – online delivery service now available

A service that allows women and girls aged 16 and over to order their contraception online and get it delivered discreetly to their door is now fully operational across Northern Ireland following a successful pilot last year.

The service is funded by Health and Social Care and delivered by SH:24 – a free online sexual health service – and can be used to order the pill, the mini-pill and emergency contraception (‘the morning after pill’).

The morning after pill is also available for free from many pharmacies across Northern Ireland.

Dr Rachel Coyle, Consultant at the Public Health Agency (PHA), said: “SH:24 makes it easier for women to manage their sexual health and provides a flexible way

to access contraception. A woman can order contraception from home, from work or from wherever is convenient –the service fits into busy, modern lives. Feedback shows this is particularly welcome for women with caring responsibilities who find it difficult to get to clinics with fixed appointment times. Some women may also feel embarrassed or struggle to know where they can access contraception quickly and easily. This service enables users to

visit www.sh24.org.uk, choose their contraception, and have it to delivered to their home free of charge. “It is a simple as filling in an online form which is then assessed by the SH:24 clinical team, who review the order and approve if it is appropriate.

The contraception is then dispensed by SH:24’s partner pharmacy and delivered to the person’s home. They do not need to be home to receive it.

Along with the medication, there are written instructions on how to take

it. Women can also order a free STI test at the same time.

“If there are any health reasons why a particular pill might not be a good choice for a you, you will receive a call from an SH:24 doctor or nurse who will talk to you and decide whether the pill is safe to prescribe or not. If not, they will advise of other, safer options or ask you to go to a clinic to discuss other forms of contraception.”

The new system has been co-designed by service designers, clinicians and

women who currently use contraception clinics.

Dr Coyle concluded:

“The service is of direct benefit to communities right across Northern Ireland, particularly at a time when health services are under pressure.

“The service’s contribution to innovation, improvement and increased access to sexual and reproductive healthcare means that women and girls over 16 can take control of their sexual health.”

The service follows the launch of SH:24’s online sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing service last year, which allows users to simply order a free and discreet home STI test. For more information or to order your free discreet contraception or STI test visit www.sh24. org.uk

New look 2023 Mazda2 makes Spring debut

The ever-popular Mazda2 has received a substantially revised new look with fresh exterior styling and new cabin trim treatment.

Across the four newly named trim grades: Centre-Line, Homura, Exclusive-Line and Homura Aka - the 2023 Mazda2 features a new grille, a sleeker bumper design, decorative dash panels and two exterior colours that make their Mazda debut on the supermini: Aero Grey and Air Stream Blue.

For the 2023 Mazda2, Mazda’s designers have focused on new design features that give the different models a more distinctive appearance to allow customers the opportunity to reflect their individuality with a wider choice of colour combinations across the four model grades. The Mazda2’s personality has been redefined with Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line focusing on a fun and casual nature, while the Homura and Homura Aka have been designed to give the Mazda2 a sportier look and character.

Across all models the 2023 Mazda2’s new grille sees the signature

Mazda wing surround pass beneath rather than below the number plate, leaving space to accentuate the new sportier lower bumper trim and shape.

Additionally, to give a sharper look, the signature wing grille surround cuts into the leading edge of the headlight rather than passing underneath, while asymmetrically placed colour accent tabs feature on the front grille and rear bumper across all models.

The Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line have a front-end design that features a large coloured panel across the lower section of the grille, which combined with the new front bumper design and more prominent lower grille section with a gloss black signature wing surround, gives the 2023 Mazda2 an unmistakable new look. With the aim of giving customers more colour combination choices, on Soul Red Crystal, Snowflake White, Platinum Quartz, Polymetal Grey and the new Air Stream Blue the

grille panel is body coloured, while on Machine Grey, Deep Crystal Blue, Ceramic Metallic and the new Aero Grey colour, the grille panel is in Jet Black to give a smart contrasting look. Jet Black cars also have a Jet Black grille panel.

All Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line cars feature a small yellow accent tab in the grille, something that’s repeated at the back where the revised rear bumper features a now full width black lower moulding with the yellow accent tab. Centre-Line cars feature 15-inch silver alloy wheels as standard, while Exclusive-Line steps up to 16-inch bright alloy wheels.

Inside, the Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line cars there’s a similar colour combination style with a new decorative dash panel that is mint coloured on Air Stream Blue and Ceramic Metallic cars for example. On Soul Red Crystal, Snowflake White, Platinum

Quartz and Polymetal Grey cars the dash panel is pure white, while the remaining exterior colours get a mirror black finish. The Homura and Homura Aka 2023 Mazda2 take a different approach and have been designed to be a more sporty interpretation of the Mazda2.

Taking advantage of the Mazda2’s well-proportioned Kodo design and the new sleeker bumper design, the Homura has

a black honeycomb grille with a red accent tab, matched to gloss black door mirrors, 16-inch black alloy wheels and a black shark fin roof antenna. At the back, the red accent sits on the lower right hand side of the black bumper trim strip. Priced from £17,750 the 2023 Mazda2 range goes on sale from late spring. Thanks to being sold alongside the Mazda2 Hybrid, Mazda has a pair of

Bring the Outdoors

Inside

Nothing says summer like lush green trees and blooming flowers. To bring your home into harmony with the summer interior design trends in 2023, try decorating with tall, standing house plants, like a monstera or a snake plant. These sturdy house plants are like living art, adding a vibrant pop of color to any room. If you don’t have a green thumb, try to use realistic-looking fake plants. That way, you can feel like you have a little piece of a garden in your home, yet never worry about forgetting to water the plants. Now that the trees outside have fully bloomed again, why obstruct your view of nature’s beauty? If you’re lucky enough to get sunlight shining through a window in your kitchen, consider the summer a

perfect opportunity to grow a window sill herb garden! Nothing represents the ideal intersection of function and style better than a decoration that you can also add to your lunch. No matter what the season, one thing is for sure: plants will never go out of style.

Metallics Shine

decorating the surface, rather than a granny chic print of tiny daisies.

In minimalist interiors, the right choice of bold patterns can elevate your style while reserving an elegant simplicity. If you’re

up for the challenge, you might even consider using mixed patterns in similar colour palettes – perhaps a tropical print could match a thin, subtle striped print. You’ll never know until you try it out!

favourite stainless steel appliances, try matching that cool-toned silver with a warmer bronze colour for your dishes, silverware, sink hardware, wine rack, or cabinet door handles.

If your home is sporting that classic all-white look,

make it modern with the summer interior design trends of 2023 – add bright bronze or rose gold accents, breathing new life into a tired, monochromatic room. If you’re on a budget or seeking a craft project to keep you busy, consider adding these

metallic accents yourself – buy some metallic paint and get busy painting your existing candle holders, plant pots, picture frames, and other decors.

Bold Patterns

Whether it’s florals or animal prints, the right pattern can change the ambi-

ance of a room. Think boldly, and consider options like a twotone geometric rug, or an up-close print of a flower. When in doubt, larger scale prints beat smaller ones – opt for a pillow cushion with a handful of palm trees and pineapples

Create an Outdoor Meditation Room

Who doesn’t love a bit of glitz and glam? This season’s summer interior design trends embrace warm metallics, like bronze, copper, brass, gold, and rose gold. When it comes to metallic accents, get creative. Think candleholders, picture frames, lampshades, decorative bowls, plant pots – let it all shine! As you apply these metallic summer interior design trends, feel free to mix and match different tones. For example, if your kitchen is already loaded with your want it to be out of the wind and quiet. If you like the space but find it a bit noisy, consider placing plants around it to help block out the sounds or playing soft music. A water feature can create soothing white noise.

Define the area with

a comfortable outdoor chair where you can read before praying, a woven mat where you can sit while you meditate or stretch when you’re finished, inspirational statuary, lanterns if you like to meditate in the evening and a small

storage chest where you can keep pillows to support your back, a blanket and your books. Arrange these items in a harmonious way with your plants and water feature. Choose colours that will enhance your meditation. Soothing,

Meditation is a way to quiet your thoughts to tap into the creative force in your life. It can refresh the mind, lift the spirits and help you feel more connected. Meditation can be as simple as sitting in a chair and quietly praying, or it can be as disciplined as Zen practices. However you meditate, having a space that’s set aside for that purpose is helpful. Given good weather, a place outside can be ideal. Find a quiet area that will allow you to feel peaceful and calm. A shady space is advisable. Before you do anything with the space, sit in it and check out how it looks, sounds and feels. You

cool colours such as light blues, greens and greys can ease you into meditation. Use these colours in your fabrics and accents. If you have a favourite item or picture that you use during your practice, put it in a prominent spot.
