‘Lisburn’s Quaker School: 250 Years of Friends’ was officially opened by Cllr Jonathan Craig, Chairman of LCCC’s Leisure & Community Wellbeing Committee, at the Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum on 4 October 2024.
The free exhibition marks 250 years since the school was founded at Prospect Hill, Lisburn, in 1774. The exhibition can be viewed Monday to Saturday, 9.30am-5pm.
Admission is free.
Using prints, letters, books, rare artefacts, and loans from Friends’
School and National Museums Northern Ireland (NMNI), the exhibition explores the early history of the school and its Quaker roots, as well as life as a student through the centuries. At the launch the Mayor Councillor Kurtis
Dickson, a past pupil, remarked that: “The town of Lisburn, as we know it, is just over 400 years old and it is incredible to think that for over 250 years of that long history, there has been a school on Prospect Hill. The 1798 Rebellion by the United Irishmen, the
Famine, the partition of Ireland, and the First and Second World Wars, have all come and gone, yet the school has remained open, educating students for life beyond the gates.”

The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Alderman Hazel Legge from Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council ahead of Baseball Ireland’s B league post season playoff finals matchup between the Belfast NorthStars and the Dublin Hurricanes at Hydebank Playing Fields.
Opened in 2016, this purpose-built baseball facility provides the necessary infrastructure in sports development for the learning and mastering of the essential skills in the sports of baseball and softball.
The Ulster Baseball and Softball Club (USBC) extended the invitation to mark this season’s triumph for the Belfast NorthStars winning Baseball Ireland’s pennant, coming top of the league table and starting
the final series at their home field of Hydebank.
Speaking at the opening, Alderman Legge, ViceChair of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee said: “The inclusive environment at Hydebank Playing Fields is a credit to everyone. It is fantastic to see so many individuals from different communities and backgrounds playing baseball and softball. This facility provides opportunities for all ages to learn a new sport in the
council area while enjoying competitive sport and physical activity in a safe, trusted environment. May I wish the Belfast NorthStars all the success in their upcoming final series.”
Diplomat Dr Christopher Stange, from the Consulate General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in Northern Ireland, who is the lead liaison person to the council on baseball and softball said: “I would like to commend Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council
for their vision and continued investment in the sports of baseball and softball. From little league, youth and adult, through to the national teams, baseball and softball, are now firmly embedded in Northern Ireland.”
Consul General Dr Stange presented Alderman Legge with the ceremonial baseball signed by the Belfast NorthStars players in a display case to commemorate the achievement.
The Belfast Region City Deal (BRCD) Council Panel met recently, at Lagan Valley Island, Lisburn, to review the significant progress being made on the £1 billion programme of investment, outlined in the BRCD Annual Report for 2023/24.
In the meeting with the six BRCD partner local authorities, Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Kurtis Dickson, reflected on LCCC’s key tourism project, Destination Royal Hillsborough: “The Destination Royal Hillsborough Project, in partnership with Historic Royal Palaces, is set to enhance this regionally significant heritage tourist attraction, delivering real economic benefits. By boosting the village’s heritage appeal and protecting its conservation areas we aim to promote significant growth in the
number of domestic and out of state visitors. In signing the Contract for Funding this summer, £20m of BRCD funding has been committed to this project. Together with funding from Historic Royal Palaces and our own council contribution, this will deliver a total investment of £26m in Destination Royal Hillsborough. I am excited to see the project develop.”
The wider BRCD programme of investment builds on regional strengths and opportunities across six council areas.
The 2023/24 Annual report outlines the significant progress made now that the Deal is fully into delivery.
Key highlights include a total of 15 Outline Business Cases approved
and nine Contracts for Funding signed, with an approximate value of £500m.
Significant progress has also been made in two exciting projects, enabling construction to commence on site at the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (AMIC) at Global Point in Newtownabbey and specialist equipment to be delivered to Studio Ulster, Belfast, which is due to open its doors later this year. The studio will be a centre of excellence in R&D and innovation in Virtual Production for screen, where the physical and digital worlds meet. The most advanced projects are now recruiting and upskilling staff, constructing new premises, co-designing projects with industry, and procuring
next generation technology and equipment, delivering significant benefits for our region and NI.
The BRCD programme of investment will create up to 20,000 new and better jobs over its lifespan, making the region a global investment destination of choice over the next decade.

Cllr Craig, also an alumnus, commended the museum for mounting the exhibition, and commented “It is incredible to see the reach of the
City Council area. There are 40 spaces available so sign up now!
Alderman Amanda Grehan, Regeneration and Growth Chair, speaking about this innovative programme said: “This unique programme will help support our residents who are over the age of 19 and unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week. By signing up you can improve your employability by mastering skills employers are looking for, opening the door to better job opportunities or promotions.
“We want to motivate participants by making learning feel like a game, where there is a sense of achievement, progress, and sometimes friendly

Gamified learning is a teaching approach using game-like elements to make learning more interactive and engaging. It takes the parts of games people enjoy, like earning points, levelling up, completing challenges, or getting rewards and applies them to educational activities.
Instead of just reading a book or solving math problems, participants can earn points or badges for completing tasks. They could move up to higher ‘levels’ as they master new topics or compete with friends to see who can solve a challenge first.
Mr Stephen Moore, Principal of Friends’ School, said “founded in 1774 for the children of Quakers, Friends’ has grown from a small school for 30 boys and girls to the school it is today, serving 1200 pupils aged 4-18 from right across the

Community retailers SuperValu and Centra, part of the Musgrave Group, are offering local groups in County Down the chance to apply for packs of native trees, as the retail brands’ partnership with charity and not-for-profit initiative Trees on the Land, continues for a fourth year into 2025.
Pledging to plant 50,000 native trees across Northern Ireland by 2032, SuperValu and Centra have already planted 15,000 trees to date in almost 50 locations including at schools, community gardens, farmland and sports clubs. Applications for the next round of trees are now open. Groups within a five mile radius of a SuperValu or Centra store are welcome to apply for packs of up to 250 free trees by visiting www.treesontheland.
com/supervalu-centratree-project. Trees will be distributed to successful groups early next year.
Desi Derby, Director of Marketing for SuperValu and Centra in Northern Ireland, said:
“At Musgrave, we are committed to caring for the planet and creating vibrant communities as part of our Sustainability Strategy. We are very proud to once again help groups in the communities we serve, develop their own sustainability projects through this tree planting initiative which will bring many long-term benefits including absorbing carbon dioxide, improving air
quality, and enhancing biodiversity. We encourage groups to apply.”
Among the groups to benefit earlier this year were St Mary’s Primary School in Newtownbutler, Derriaghy Village Community Association in Lisburn, Faughan Valley Community Interest Company, Bocombra Primary School in
Portadown, St Catherine’s College in Armagh, Dervock and District Community Association, and Lisburn BMX Club.
Imogen Rabone, Project Co-ordinator and Founder of Trees on the Land, added: “Our partnership with SuperValu and Centra goes from strength to strength, and we are delighted to be able to offer groups
across Northern Ireland continued opportunities to plant another 5,000 native trees next year. Trees are such an important part of our ecosystem and it is our vision to establish tree cover and woodland in rural and urban areas that will grow for many years, provide valuable resources and create a lasting legacy for future generations.”

“Looking after our mental health has never been more important. For many people, the pressures of everyday life can be too much to deal with. That is why I chose local charity Emerge Counselling Services as my Mayoral Charity for the year. The work they do is life changing and lifesaving and I will do all I can to support them in the coming months.
“I had help from some of our local primary schools in bringing the environmental theme to this evening’s event. I want to thank the pupils and staff of Lisburn Central Primary
School, Carr Primary School, Carryduff Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School, Carryduff for showing their commitment to the environment through participation in the Eco Schools Programme. From bug hotels to litter picks, these young people can teach us a thing or two about protecting the world around us.
Guest speaker Hilary McGrady spoke about the fantastic work of the National Trust. She highlighted how they work to offer affordable and enjoyable beauty spots to enjoy walks and talks with family and friends. Hilary connected the importance of socialising and exercising with improving mental wellbeing.

The Transfer Test, is a crucial step for many children seeking admission to grammar schools. It’s a challenging exam that requires careful preparation.
To prepare for the test, it’s essential to understand its format. The exam typically consists of three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, and Mathematics. The Verbal Reasoning section tests a child’s ability to think logically and use language effectively. The Non-Verbal Reasoning section assesses problem-solving skills without using words. The Mathematics section covers basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. Regular practice is key to success. Working through past papers can help familiarize yourself with the test format and question types. Online resources and tutoring can also provide valuable support. Building essential skills such as reading, writing, numeracy, and problem-solving is equally important.
Time management is another crucial aspect of test preparation. Practicing under timed conditions can help simulate the real exam environment and identify areas that need more attention.
It’s important to stay calm and confident throughout the preparation process. Offering encouragement and support can help your child maintain a positive mindset. Mindfulness techniques can also be helpful for managing stress and anxiety.
Seeking guidance from your child’s school or the exam board can provide additional information and resources. By following these steps and maintaining a consistent approach, you can help your child prepare effectively for the UK Transfer Test.
Many parents of children with additional needs are unaware that they may be entitled to financial support – here’s an overview of the support that may be available to families:
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Children under 16 with a disability or additional needs may be entitled to Disability Living Allowance (DLA), while those over 16 can receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP). The amount received will depend on the condition and how it affects the child. Depending on household circumstances, entitlement to DLA or PIP can also help with entitlement to other benefits such as Universal Credit, Tax Credits and Carers Allowance.
Higher payments of other benefits
As soon as possible after receiving a positive DLA or PIP decision you should contact whoever pays your current benefits to tell them you’re now getting DLA or PIP, as this could result in you getting higher payments of the following:
• Universal Credit
• Child Tax Credit
• Housing Benefit.
You’ll be exempt from the ‘benefit cap’ which limits the amount of benefit payments a household can receive, and also may be eligible for help towards your household rates if you
have made any adaptations to your home to meet the needs of the person with the disability.
If you do not currently receive any benefits
The awarding of a disability benefit is a significant change in circumstances. The entitlement to DLA or PIP may mean that households with a higher income, and who would not otherwise be eligible, can qualify for support.
You should contact an independent benefits advisor who can check if this change means that
your household has now become entitled to any other benefits, such as Universal Credit.
Carer’s Allowance and Carer Element
Parents and others who care for someone in receipt of DLA or PIP could be eligible to receive Carer’s Allowance, which is paid weekly at a rate of £81.90.
Eligibility depends on both the circumstances of the carer and those of the person being cared for.
If the carer is in receipt of Universal Credit and is in receipt of Carer’s Allowance, or would be in receipt of Carers
Allowance if it weren’t for their income being too high, they may be eligible for an additional Carer Element of Universal Credit of £198.31 per
month. For a couple with one partner working and the other not working but in receipt of Carers
Allowance they can meet the criteria for financial support with their registered childcare costs which otherwise require
both members in a couple to be working.

We see our parents as an
important part of our school family, we want you to learn with us and join in your child’s progress, share in our successes together. We listen to and respect our parents.
Our emphasis on the appropriate use of digital technology ensures that our children are not only prepared for the future but will excel in it, understand the difference between using technology for learning and research and understand the benefits and risks of social media.
Access to the state-ofthe-art facilities at the grammar school allows our young learners to engage with modern technology, developing transversal skills that will carry them far beyond the classroom.
At Wallace Preparatory Department, we believe in nurturing curiosity, creativity, and confidence and importantly spotting early children who are gifted
and talented and helping them extend and stretch as well as holding out a hand of support and encouragement to those who find aspects of the curriculum more challenging. We develop a growth mind set - what you can’t do today, you can do tomorrow with persistence, hard work and reliance. Whether through academic challenges, digital exploration, or collaborative projects, our pupils leave us as self-assured young individuals, most transfer to our grammar school and they regularly go ‘back to Prep’ to recount all the work they are doing now in ‘big school’ as confident young adults.

A feathered survivor: The collared dove
Even people who are not particularly interested in birds are likely to be aware that many of our native species are in decline, particularly those which evolved to feed or breed in specific habitats, such as the farmland yellowhammer, whose numbers are down by nearly 60% in Ireland, mainly because of changes in agriculture. However, species which can or have adapted to change can thrive. For instance, magpies are successful generalists and opportunists when it comes to habitat and food, but there’s another bird of note which is flourishing, and literally spreading around the world.
It was about 1960 that I first heard that collared doves had been spotted in Northern Ireland (in Fermanagh I think), but you’ll find them almost everywhere now, mainly in parks and gardens.
The Eurasian collared dove as it’s formally known, has been one of the great colonisers of the
bird world, travelling far beyond its native range, particularly over the last century, to countries colder than its range at the end of the 19th century in warm temperate and subtropical Asia. Amazingly, in about 70 years collared dove numbers went from zero in the UK and Ireland to about one million breeding pairs today. And, importantly, they don’t seem to have out-
competed original natives for food and habitat but might have benefitted from garden bird feeders (they mostly eat grain and seeds) and their ability to nest and produce young for a large part of the year.
These delicate doves, much smaller than wood pigeons, are a welcome addition to our parks and gardens, but because of their ground feeding habit their main predator is
the domestic cat. But the doves seem to be able to overcome predation, even if their population has probably reached its peak. I really don’t know why collared doves have been so successful, but as we face new man-made changes to our world, particularly climate, it’s encouraging to know that some animals have a particular ability to adapt to change, and to thrive.

A 70 year old from the Lisburn area has reached the semi-finals of a competition to find the UK and Ireland’s most inspirational slimmers where she met Olympic shooter Amber Rutter.
Anne Wilkins was one of just 38 women to win a place at the semi-finals of Slimming World’s Woman of the Year 2024 competition after losing an incredible 4 st 4.5 lbs. It was there that she was congratulated by Amber, who brought home a silver medal at this year’s Olympics in Paris.
Anne, who slimmed from 14st 2 lbs to 9st 11.5 lbs, made it to the semi finals after members of her Knockmore Lisburn Group voted for her to go forward to the national Woman of the year 2024 semi-finals at Slimming World’s head office in Derbyshire!
She says: “Before I joined Slimming World my confidence was really low. I knew I needed to do something about my weight because it impacted every aspect of my life, from the clothes I’d wear to the places I’d go - I thought about it non-stop! I wanted to feel more comfortable and confident in my own skin, but I had no idea where to start.
Anne said: “I decided to give Slimming World a go after seeing a poster at my local shop. I didn’t know at the time, that it was the best decision I would ever make. Right from the first group, I knew I was in the right place to get the support I needed to make changes that would work for me and help me reach the size I wanted to be.”
Anne began following Slimming World’s healthy eating plan and loved that she could still enjoy her favourite foods and meals, by making changes to the way she prepared and cooked them.
She says: “It wasn’t long before people started to notice changes in me and that gave me a huge boost to keep going! My Slimming World group and Consultant Christine have been so supportive . Everyone was so friendly from the first group and now they’ve become great friends, they’re always ready with ideas and advice, and their support helped me to believe in myself and my ability to make changes and keep
them up for good.”
As Anne lost weight, she was inspired by Slimming World’s physical activity support programme to start exercising, finding an activity she enjoyed and taking it at her own pace. Her chosen activities included walking for approximately 20 minutes, 3 or 4 times a day and she now enjoys taking her grandchildren to the park where she can climb the rope bridges and swing from the monkey bars!”
Christine Young who
runs the Knockmore Lisburn group that Anne attends, said: “Anne is such an Inspiration and it’s been wonderful to see her transformation, not only on the outside but on the inside too. She’s grown in confidence and self-belief and I feel very lucky to have played a part in that. Anne gives so much support to the other group members and if there’s anyone feeling like she did before joining group, she is such a great example of what can be
achieved. I would love to welcome anyone who’d like to lose weight to our Knockmore Lisburn group at Trinity Methodist Church on Thursdays, 5.30pm & 7.30pm and also on Fridays at 9.30am or call me on 07981 745742

The choice between oil and gas central heating can significantly impact your home’s energy efficiency and overall cost. Let’s delve into the pros and cons of each option.
Oil central heating offers several advantages. It is generally known for its reliability, especially in remote areas where gas infrastructure may be limited. Modern oil boilers can be highly efficient, converting a significant portion of the fuel into heat. Additionally, having an oil tank on-site provides a certain level of energy security, as you can store fuel in advance. However, oil prices can fluctuate, and in some regions, oil may be more expensive than gas. Burning oil also releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas contributing to climate change. Furthermore, oil
boilers require regular maintenance, including tank inspections and filter cleaning.
Gas central heating, on the other hand, offers several benefits. Gas boilers are generally more efficient than oil boilers, leading to lower energy bills. They also produce fewer greenhouse gases than oil. Additionally, gas is a readily available fuel source, and there’s typically no need for onsite storage. However, gas infrastructure may not be available in all areas, especially rural locations. Gas prices can also fluctuate, and in some regions, gas may be more expensive
than oil. Moreover, gas leaks can pose a safety hazard, requiring proper installation and maintenance. When making your decision, consider the following factors: local fuel prices, infrastructure availability, environmental concerns, home insulation, and boiler efficiency. By carefully evaluating these factors, you can determine the most suitable heating option for your home.
With a little creativity and planning, you can transform your garden into a cozy and inviting retreat, even during the coldest months.
To embrace the seasonal charm, consider planting winter-hardy flowers like pansies, violas, and cyclamen to add pops of colour. Evergreen shrubs and trees will provide yearround structure and interest. Incorporate winter-themed decorations like wreaths, garlands, and lanterns to create a festive atmosphere. A bird feeder can also be a great way to attract feathered friends to your garden and add a touch of nature to your outdoor space.
To create a cozy retreat, invest in a patio heater or fire pit to extend your outdoor enjoyment well into the evening. Opt for weather-resistant furniture and add cozy throws and cushions for added comfort. String up fairy lights or lanterns to create a warm and inviting ambiance. To make the most of your space, consider placing potted plants on your patio or deck to add greenery and colour without the need for extensive planting. A small water feature like a fountain or bird bath can add a touch of tranquility to your outdoor space, even in winter. Keep your outdoor area tidy by investing in storage solutions like sheds, bins, or plant pots. Winter also offers opportunities for outdoor activities. Enjoy stargazing on clear winter nights, or host a winter barbecue with the right equipment and a patio heater. Keep the kids entertained with winterfriendly outdoor games
like snowball fights or building snowmen. By following these tips, you can transform your outdoor space into a winter wonderland that you and your family can enjoy all season long.
As the chilly winter months approach, ensuring your home stays cozy and comfortable without breaking the bank is essential.
Here are some effective strategies to heat your home efficiently this winter: Optimize Your Heating System. Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure your heating system is operating at peak efficiency. A professional check-up can identify and address any issues that may be affecting its performance. Consider investing in a smart thermostat to automate temperature
control, create schedules, and potentially save energy. Additionally, ensure your home is adequately insulated to prevent heat loss through walls, ceilings, and floors. Leverage Natural Heat Sources. Sunlight can be a valuable source of warmth. Keep curtains and blinds open during the day to allow sunlight to heat your home, and close them at night to retain heat. The heat generated from cooking
and appliances can also contribute to warming up adjacent rooms. If you have a fireplace or woodstove, use them wisely, ensuring proper ventilation and burning efficiency. Create a Warm Home Environment. Preventing drafts is essential for maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. Seal any gaps or cracks around doors and windows to keep cold air out. Rugs and carpets
can help insulate floors and provide warmth underfoot. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to changing temperatures and stay comfortable without relying solely on your heating system.
Mindful Heating Habits. Reducing the thermostat temperature at night when you’re sleeping can significantly lower your energy consumption.
Consider using a setback thermostat to automatically lower the temperature during unoccupied hours.
If you have a multi-story home, creating heating zones can help you target specific areas and avoid
heating unused spaces. Energy-Efficient Appliances and Lighting. Replacing incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs can reduce your lighting energy consumption. Additionally, choosing appliances with the Energy Star label can help you save energy and money. By implementing these strategies, you can create a warm and inviting home environment while minimizing your energy consumption and costs. Remember, a well-insulated, efficiently heated home not only saves you money but also contributes to a more sustainable future.

Headteachers and PTAs urge shoppers to sign up to support their local schools
Asda’s Cashpot for Schools initiative, fronted by Joe Wicks, launched on 2nd September and has already hit the landmark figure of £3 million raised for primary schools across the UK— with eight weeks left to go. All 22,000 state funded UK primary schools are eligible to get involved. The scheme has seen over 21,500 shoppers sign up already, and Northern Ireland schools have so far raised over £100,000 - putting pounds back into primary schools.
The industry-first campaign sees the retailer donate 0.5% of the value of its customers’ shopping
to a primary school of their choice every time they shop using Asda Rewards, with £7.5 million set to be raised in total. Signing up for the initiative is simple – with customers simply required to opt into Cashpot for Schools in the Asda Rewards app and select their school of choice.
The campaign follows research that found that parents are asked on average to donate £125 per year to support their children’s schools, and 73% of educators in Northern Ireland say a lack of funding has impacted learning at their school*.
Ashley Ritchie, Asda
Antrim Customer and Colleague Community Champion, said:
“It has been a pleasure visiting our local schools to spread the word about the Cashpot campaign.
Our amazing customers in Antrim have raised £3,000 so far, which will go a long way towards schools in the local area being able to buy much needed resources and equipment for their pupils to use.”
“This fantastic initiative runs until the end of November, with millions more in funding available to primary schools across Northern Ireland. Please encourage all your friends and family to sign up to
Asda Rewards and shop to support local primary schools in your area.”
Marie Cunningham, Vice Principal at St Comgall’s Primary School in Antrim, who were one of the first schools to sign up to the initiative, said:
“Asda Cashpot for Schools is a very welcome fund-raising initiative. Our school signed up so we could help raise funds to purchase additional reading materials and practical resources to support our pupils. The beauty of the scheme is that there are no restrictions on item spend, allowing schools to allocate funds where they are needed most.
“Since Cashpot launched we’ve already raised £520.88 from parents and the local community opting in on the Asda Rewards app. It’s an easy process and we’re delighted by people doing their normal weekly shop, our pupils are going to benefit massively. Let’s keep spending and filling our St. Comgall’s Primary School Cashpot to raise as much money as possible. Thank you, Asda!” Schools and parents can also download assets to help raise more money for schools which includes, letters, newsletters, social cards, letter header, poster and leaflet at Cashpot for Schools toolkit | Parentkind.
Department for Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has attended the launch of the 10th Annual Road Safety Awards.
The launch was hosted by Road Safe NI Charity at the Hilton Hotel Templepatrick on Friday afternoon. The awards recognise the contributions of individuals and organisations who have worked to improve road safety in their communities.
Twelve categories are open for nomination.
Minister O’Dowd
said: “I am happy to be here today to support the Road Safety Awards in appreciation of the work that is done within our communities to improve road safety for all.
“The death rate on our roads is, on average, one per week.
Forty seven people have died following road traffic collisions
in 2024. Sadly, seven people have lost their lives on our roads since the beginning of September alone.
These are shocking statistics but we need to remember this is about people.
“Behind the figures are loved ones who set off on an everyday journey but now, they are never coming home to their family
and friends. From the moment that happens, lives are shattered and will never be the same again.
“The devastation each and every road death leaves in its wake knows no boundaries and as road users we must all do everything we can –both individually and collectively – to reduce road deaths.”
Winter weather can present unique challenges for drivers, from icy roads and reduced visibility to the increased risk of breakdowns.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable winter driving experience, it’s essential to prepare your vehicle and adopt safe driving practices.
Good tyres are crucial for maintaining traction and control on winter roads. Consider investing in winter tyres, which offer superior grip on snow and ice compared to all-season tyres. Ensure your tyres have adequate tread depth; a minimum of 3mm is generally recommended for winter driving. Check your tyre pressure regularly, as cold weather can cause a slight drop. And finally, make sure your spare tyre is in good condition and properly inflated.
A clear windscreen is vital for safe driving in winter. Use the defroster on your car’s heater to quickly clear fog and condensation from your windscreen. Ensure proper ventilation in your car to prevent moisture
buildup. Keep your windscreen wipers clean and in good condition. Avoid placing objects on your dashboard that could block air vents and hinder demisting.
To stay safe on winter roads, plan ahead by checking weather forecasts and planning your route accordingly. Reduce your speed
to maintain control on slippery roads. Increase following distance to give yourself time to react. Drive in a lower gear to provide better traction on icy roads. Keep a winter emergency kit in your car, including a blanket, food, water, flashlight, jumper cables, and a small shovel. And
finally, stay informed by monitoring road conditions and traffic reports. By following these guidelines and staying prepared, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable winter driving experience. Remember, safety should always be your top priority on the road.
For an impressive third year running, Dacia has won the ‘Value Car of the Year’ title in The Motor Awards with the All-New Duster taking the title previously awarded to the all-electric All-New Dacia Spring and seven-seat Dacia Jogger in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
Judged by News UK’s motoring experts at The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun, the adventurous All-New Duster SUV arrives at Dacia retailers this November with prices starting from £18,745 or just £117 per month on a 4.9% APR representative two-year Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) finance* deal.
Rob Gill, The Sun’s Motors Editor, said: “That’s a hat-trick for Dacia. They may as well keep the trophy! Jogger triumphed in 2022, then Spring in 2023, and now the brilliant £23,000 Duster 4x4 takes the crown as Value Car of the Year. Proper
mechanical 4WD with high ground clearance and attack angles, chunky tyres and five drive modes. Winter proof. Looks ace. Incredible.”
Will Dron, editor of Driving.co.uk, said:
“The Dacia Duster has always provided excellent value for money, but the latest version offers even more, with increased style, tech, efficiency and practicality, all for a price that leaves incoming Chinese brand managers scratching their heads. A thoroughly worthy winner.”
This is the second award the All-New Duster has won before even arriving in UK showrooms.
Luke Broad, Dacia Brand Director for the UK, added: “While it’s true that Dacia offers some of the most affordable cars in the UK, what we really strive for is to deliver the greatest value for our customers. That means we focus on not just an attractive purchase price, but also a generous level of standard equipment, centred around features that our customers tell us they find useful, wrapped up in Dacia’s typically adventurous style.”
The All-New Duster continues to offer the value of its predecessor but with a distinctive new exterior design, a new, more digitally-
connected interior with enhanced interior space and comfort, the latest safety
technologies, and the addition of two hybrid powertrains alongside its petrol and Bi-Fuel
engines – plus a 4x4 version that takes its off-road capabilities to new heights.
Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has welcomed the launch of a new tool to detect drivers under the influence of illegal substances.
The PSNI has officially launched the new roadside drug wipes, which will be used in addition to existing testing available for alcohol levels.
This month officers across Northern Ireland will be provided with devices, as part of a pilot programme, to help detect drivers using vehicles whilst under the influence of illegal substances.
In 2023, 71 people lost their lives on the North’s roads – the highest number of deaths for eight years.
Forty six people have died following road traffic collisions in 2024. Sadly, six people have lost their lives on roads in the north since the beginning of September alone.
The Minister recently
launched the Road Safety Strategy for Northern Ireland to 2030 and the Road Safety Strategy Action Plan 2024/25, which includes a review of current drugdriving legislation.
Minister O’Dowd said: “The launch of this roadside drugs-test tool is timely.
“In the North, the death rate on our roads is, on average, one per
week. It’s a shocking statistic and the devastation every road death leaves in its wake knows no boundaries.
“In 2023, 11 people were killed in road traffic collisions where alcohol or drugs were attributed.
“As road users we must do everything we can – both individually and collectively – to reduce road deaths.
A new study reveals the most sought-after skilled trade jobs across various UK areas.
The study by flooring specialists Mr Sander analysed Google search data from various UK areas to determine the skilled trade jobs with the highest interest.
Data was found for searches with keywords such as ‘(job) jobs’, ‘(job) jobs near me’, ‘how to become a (job)’, ‘how much does a (job) make’ and ‘(job) salary’.
Results are based on the average search
volumes for each of these keywords combined.
Skilled trade jobs are essential and highly sought-after in the UK. Despite being competitive, they offer good wages and opportunities for career growth, attracting many people who want to learn new skills while earning a solid income.
This study aims to determine which skilled trade jobs are the most
popular among people across the UK.
The five most soughtafter skilled trade jobs in Belfast are:
Electrician
Average Monthly Search Volume: 122.50
An electrician’s responsibilities include installing, repairing, and testing electrical products and systems. Some of the main aims for this role is to design the layout of electrical wiring, diagnose faults, and perform general maintenance on all electrical systems.
Starting with an apprenticeship is the most popular path for this career since it allows new employees to get the ideal work experience required to begin in the position. Electricians earn an average hourly pay of £17.51.
Plumber
Average Monthly Search Volume: 121.67
Plumbing jobs in the UK are highly popular due to their higher average salary and their minimal educational requirementsGCSEs or equivalent are enough to enter this field. The average salary for plumbers is £16.49 per hour, although this can vary based on location, experience, and the employing company.
Bricklayer
Average Monthly Search Volume: 111.67
Bricklayers are responsible for constructing and repairing houses and buildings, as well as renovating stonework. To get started in this field, individuals can start with training courses such as a Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills or a Level 2 Diploma
in Bricklaying, or they can pursue an apprenticeship. The average annual salary for bricklayers is £31,851, although this is dependent on several factors.
Painting and Decorating
Average Monthly Search Volume: 110.00
Painters and decorators are responsible for finishing homes with tasks like wallpapering, painting, and applying protective finishes. This role requires at least GCSEs and, often, additional training depending on the employers’ preferences. The average salary for painters and decorators is £14.03 per hour, making it one of the lower-paid trade jobs.
Joiner
Average Monthly Search Volume: 100.83
A joiner’s job is to make wooden structures by joining together pieces of wood to form the fittings of a house or piece of furniture such as a chest of drawers, wardrobes, or doors. Joinery is in the same industry as carpentry, and to work in the field, people must be trained to a specific level.
For example, most people will complete at least Level 2 college courses or
begin as apprentices. This industry pays an average salary of £38,216.
Anthony Miller, CEO of Mr Sander® commented on the findings
“These trends in job searches show a continued interest in skilled trade jobs, highlighting their importance in addressing everyday needs.
“Skilled trade jobs like those in the study are in high demand, and the best way to begin a career in these roles is usually through education and hands-on training. For many, this involves enrolling in job-related training programs or obtaining certificates that provide essential skills.
“Apprenticeships are also a good method for gaining practical experience whilst earning money. They provide on-the-job training under the guidance of qualified professionals, which is valuable when learning the necessary skills.
“These approaches not only prepare individuals for successful careers in these jobs but also ensures that they are well-equipped to take advantage of the high earning potential and opportunities for progression.”
Getting the planning and preparation right is vital when building an extension.
Building an extension can add extra space and value to your home.
Whether you need a guest bedroom, bigger living room, or home office, an extension can transform your home. But, an extension needs careful and precise planning, preparation and execution. Where to start when building an extension?
Doing some initial planning will help your extension build go smoothly. Here’s a general checklist of things to do before building an extension:
1. Planning permission. Because of permitted development rights, you won’t usually need planning permission for single-storey or conservatory extensions. However, whether you can build without planning permission depends on your property type, the build, and location. Check
with your local planning authority if you’re unsure.
2. Building regulations. All homeowners must comply with building regulations. These regulations outline the required standards for safety, structural integrity, insulation, fire safety, and accessibility. Hiring trades registered with a Competent Person Scheme means they can sign off on work to meet the regulations.
3. Lawful development . Even under Permitted Development, applying for a Lawful Development Certificate (LDC) can be a good idea. Getting an LDC confirms that the building and the construction work did not require planning permission.
4. Party wall agreement. Your home extension might involve building work near or on a wall shared with your neighbour’s property. In this case, you may need a party wall agreement.
extension.
5. Neighbours. Always consider your neighbours. Even if you don’t need to worry about a party wall, it’s a good idea to
inform your neighbours of your plans and any future disruption.
6. Leasehold or freehold If you own the leasehold,
Home insurance is a crucial financial safety net, protecting your property and belongings from unexpected events.
However, understanding the exact coverage can be confusing. Here’s a breakdown of what your home insurance typically covers: Building Coverage Home insurance covers damage to the main structure of your home, including walls, roof, floors, and foundation. It also extends to damage in outbuildings like garages, sheds, and patios.
Contents Coverage
In addition to protecting the building itself, home insurance covers your personal belongings inside your home. This includes furniture, electronics, clothing, and other personal items. Some policies may also extend coverage to your personal belongings when they’re away from your home.
Additional Coverages
Beyond the basic building and contents coverage, many home
insurance policies offer additional benefits.
These can include:
• Liability: Covers bodily injury or property damage caused by you, your family members, or pets on your property.
• Loss of Use: Provides temporary living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable due to covered damage.
• Water Back-Up: Covers damage caused by water backing up into your home, such as from a sewer or sump pump failure.
• Tree and Shrub Damage: Covers damage to trees and shrubs on your property caused by covered perils.
Common Exclusions
While home insurance provides extensive coverage, there are some common exclusions that you should be aware of:
• Flood Damage: Flood insurance is typically separate from
home insurance.
• Earthquakes: Earthquake coverage is also usually an additional policy.
• Neglect: Damage caused by intentional neglect or failure to maintain your property.
• Business Activities: Home insurance doesn’t cover businessrelated activities conducted at your home.
Considerations
When reviewing your home insurance policy, keep these key factors in mind:
• Deductible: This is the amount you’re responsible for paying out-of-pocket
before your insurance coverage kicks in.
• Coverage Limits: Your policy will have limits on how much it will pay for specific types of damage.
