Baseball B league series finals get underway in Castlereagh

The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Alderman Hazel Legge from Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council ahead of Baseball Ireland’s B league post season playoff finals matchup between the Belfast NorthStars and the Dublin Hurricanes at Hydebank Playing Fields.

Opened in 2016, this purpose-built baseball facility provides the necessary infrastructure in sports development for the learning and mastering of the essential skills in the sports of baseball and softball. The Ulster Baseball and Softball Club (USBC) extended the invitation to mark this season’s triumph for the Belfast NorthStars winning Baseball Ireland’s pennant, coming top of the league table and starting the final series at their home field of Hydebank. Speaking at the opening, Alderman Legge, ViceChair of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee said: “The inclusive environment at Hydebank

Playing Fields is a credit to everyone. It is fantastic to see so many individuals from different communities and backgrounds playing baseball and softball. This facility provides opportunities for all ages to learn a new sport in the council area while enjoying competitive sport and physical activity in a safe, trusted environment. May I wish the Belfast NorthStars all the success in their upcoming final series.” Consul General Dr Stange presented Alderman Legge with the ceremonial baseball signed by the Belfast NorthStars players in a display case to commemorate the achievement.

Food producers, chefs, craftspeople and musicians showcased talent and creativity at the recent Moira Speciality Food Fair.

17-year-old fencer and Lisburn local Sean Chen is the latest athlete to be awarded £500 as part of the annual Mary Peters Trust and Hughes Insurance bursary programme, designed to support young athletes in reaching their full potential.

Sean’s journey has been marked by dedication and outstanding achievements.

He is a two-time NI Junior Foil Winner in the U16 section and achieved a top 16 finish at the British Youth Championships (U16). More recently, he achieved a 6th place finish in the Public Schools Fencing Championships (U16).

Fencing - a combat sport rooted in history - revolves around three weapons including the Foil, the Épée, and the Sabre. Sean specialises in Foil, a discipline that demands not only physical agility but also strategic acumen. According to Sean, the unique blend of physical and mental challenges is what makes the sport so compelling.

Reflecting on the journey so far, Sean said, “The support and recognition from the Mary Peters Trust and Hughes Insurance is significant. I come from rural China, where my family never had the chance or opportunity to get involved in sport, so I feel extremely fortunate. Fencing has taught me so much about mental fortitude and

Sean’s short-term goals, which include refining his techniques and improving his competition results all aimed at his long-term aim of qualifying for international events, have shifted since injuring his Achilles tendon in August.

With a year of full training and competitions out of reach, Sean’s number one priority is now recovery. Though fencing has always demanded mental toughness, this challenge has only strengthened Sean’s determination to come back stronger. As he explains, “Sport can be cruel, and setbacks like this injury are part of the journey, but it’s all about the comeback. My passion for fencing is what keeps me going. With the help of my coach, Johnny Davis, who has been a key support in my recovery, traveling to my home to conduct 1-1 upper body training sessions and keep me physically ready, and the unwavering support of

Injuries happen, and while we often hear about the successes, it’s important to acknowledge the hard work and commitment behind the scenes. Fencing is an incredibly demanding

sport, both physically and mentally, and Sean’s determination to overcome this setback shows the kind of resilience that makes a true athlete. Sean has done and continues to do Northern Ireland proud as he focuses on his longterm goals of competing internationally and I hope this bursary helps alleviate some of the costs associated with training and coming back from an injury, allowing Sean to continue excelling in his sport.”

ADVICE NI LAUNCHES INITIATIVE TO BRING SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS TO LISBURN COMMUNITY

Advice NI has announced the launch of the Sustainable Energy Communities NI (SEC NI) Project, an initiative designed by a number of organisations to foster community-led sustainable energy solutions across Northern Ireland.

The project, funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, will initially run across four communities including Ballymacash, Lisburn The project was brought about when a group of likeminded organisations came together to develop and design sustainable solutions in response to rising energy costs

and the urgent need for climate action, two issues which have placed significant pressures on communities across Northern Ireland. The SEC NI lead partner Advice NI, alongside Atlantic Technological University, Co-operative Alternatives, Drumlin Wind Energy Cooperative, NEA NI and NI Community Energy were delighted to attend the launch event - on Wednesday 11 September at in Mount Vernon Community Development Forumsupport their endeavours to bring the project about.

Supported by The National Lottery, the project will initially work across four communities namely, Mount Vernon Belfast, Ballymacash Lisburn, Lisnaskea Fermanagh, and Dolmens, Co Down who will be supported to help create and implement their own energy strategies to reduce fuel poverty, enhance energy efficiency, and contribute

to Northern Ireland’s Net Zero targets.

As evidenced by a recent Fuel Poverty Coalition report, the issue of fuel poverty is now estimated to be impacting 41 per cent of households here - with those on the lowest income and in the least efficient homes being hit hardest.

Speaking at the event Kevin Higgins, Head

of Policy at Advice NI said, “The SEC NI Project represents a critical step forward in how we address energy challenges in Northern Ireland. At Advice NI, we witness firsthand the devastating impact that energy poverty has on individuals and families across the region. Many are forced to make impossible choices between

heating their homes and other essential needs, which only adds to financial hardship and further threatens their well-being.

“By empowering communities to take the lead in developing and implementing their own energy strategies, we are giving them the tools to make informed decisions that will not only reduce fuel poverty and improve energy efficiency but also contribute to our collective goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050. The project is about more than just addressing immediate energy concerns, it’s about building a sustainable approach for energy usage for generations to come.”

This funding comes from The National Lottery Community Fund’s UK wide Climate

Action Fund, which was set up to help communities reduce their carbon footprint and show what is possible when people take the lead in tackling climate change.

The SEC NI Project will follow a structured three-phase process, Learn, Plan, and Do. The first phase, ‘Learn’, will see communities guided by a project coordinator and mentor to understand their energy usage, efficiency opportunities, and potential for renewable solutions. The ‘Plan’ phase involves creating an Energy Master Plan that assesses current energy needs and identifies practical, cost-effective measures for improvement, such as retrofitting homes or implementing renewable energy systems. In the ‘Do’ phase communities will be supported to execute their Energy Master Plan through action roadmaps and assistance in securing necessary funding.

Laura Turner, Ballymacash Sports Academy said, “The

SEC NI Project aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainability and community engagement. We are keen to work with the three other pilot Sustainable Energy Communities and the project partners to develop a sustainable energy future for everyone in our community.”

Kate Beggs, Northern Ireland Director at The National Lottery Community Fund said, “We are pleased to award this substantial grant to the SEC NI Project from our UK wide Climate Action Fund, thanks to money raised by people who play The National Lottery.

“This project embodies community-driven change, empowering local residents to take control of their energy needs, address energy poverty, improve their own resilience and contribute to the fight against climate change. We look forward to seeing what is achieved over the coming months and years.”

Pizza Co: a Business with a Passion for Pizza

This expansion represents a significant investment of £250,000

Why Wasps put the sting in the tail at Summers End

JV Allister reports

Three friends with a combined 50 years of experience in the pizza industry have joined forces to put Pizza Co on the local culinary Map. Matthew, Matt and Conall bought the brand in October 2023 after Matthew Stevenson had worked for the brand from 2013 (with the previous owners). The company now boasts five stores with a sixth, larger store opening this month in Lisburn, creating 25 new jobs.

A key focus for Pizza Co is its staff.

Recognizing the demanding nature of the business, with long hours and weekend work, the company prioritizes staff retention. The team is viewed as the backbone of the operation, and their contributions are greatly valued.

To enhance the customer experience, Pizza Co has invested £300,000 in various improvements. These include a new app with GPS driver tracking, self-ordering kiosks, a revamped prep kitchen and a state-ofthe-art dough mixer imported from Italy. A complete rebrand has also been undertaken,

encompassing a whole new look, uniforms, signage, branding etc.

Beyond business growth, Pizza Co is committed to giving back to the community. The company distributes over 300 children’s meal vouchers each week to local sports clubs, schools, and youth groups. Additionally, Pizza Co supports various sports teams, including the Belfast Trojans and Belfast Bulls.

With a strong foundation built on industry expertise, a dedicated team, and a customer-centric approach, Pizza Co is poised for continued success.

It’s late summer or early autumn. You’re having a barbeque, or a picnic, or your kids are happily licking ice lollies in the garden. That’s when they zoom in, intent it would seem on spoiling the fun, everyone scattering, waving their arms.

It’s the dreaded stinging wasps!

In fact, wasps are really only a nuisance between late August and the end of September. For the rest of the year, unless we inadvertently disturb a nest, we’re generally unaware of these busy insects as they go about their daily lives. And there’s a specific reason why they seek out sweet treats in late summer, as I’ll explain later.

Common wasps are social insects, living in colonies of as many as 10,000 individuals during the late-summer peak. Only young queens survive the winter, in hibernation, and in late spring will seek suitable places

for a new colony, in trees, holes in the ground, garden sheds, sometimes attics (if you’re unlucky), often in bird nest boxes, and will start to build, using chewed up wood mixed with saliva to form a papery pulp moulded into chambers for their eggs, which hatch into larvae and become infertile female workers.

Eventually, when there are sufficient numbers, the workers take over, expanding the nest, tending as many as 25,000 eggs over the summer and feeding the larvae, which require protein, delivered by the workers which kill insects and other invertebrates, turning them into tiny food pellets. In return, the larvae exude a sweet fluid that the workers lap up. This reciprocal feeding is thought to play an important part in wasp society, keeping individuals bonded. Wasps use their sting

to subdue prey, but also aggressively in defence of their nests. If disturbed, they are thought to release a pheromone, a chemical signal that encourages other wasps to join in the attack. And of importance, squashed wasps release the same pheromone, so swatting is a bad idea if you don’t want to be stung by a dead wasp’s extended family! Towards the end of summer, the queen lays eggs which will develop

into the next generation of males and queens, and when there are no larvae left to feed and no sugary fluids to lap, the workers, near the end of their life-cycles, become like sugar addicts in search of a fix, intently focussed on replacing that which they have lost…which might include your kids’ ice lollies. It’s nature. Understand it better and live with it. Indeed, nurture it.

Granite sculpture installed at Temple in honour of the Temple 100 Road Race

This installation on the Temple Roundabout is a partnership between the Sam McBride Trust and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.

The trust raised funding for it through charity events and its network of motorbike riders, sponsors, family and friends.

Alderman Amanda Grehan, Regeneration and Growth Chair said:

“Brian Reid is a local man well-known for his racing triumphs. He held the title of World Champion in 1985 and 1986 and was an avid rider at the Temple 100. To depict such an iconic racer in the vicinity of the century old Temple Motorcycle and Athletic

Club is fantastic. It is a fitting way for generations to remember all the fine men who once graced and raced our roads.

“My colleague Councillor Uel Mackin has been passionate about this project and I thank him for bringing it to our committee. Tourism is important to the Lisburn and Castlereagh area and we encourage visitors to enjoy what our city has to offer. Motorcycle racing is a sport enjoyed by thousands and the Temple

100 brought its share of spectators and competitors to the area.”

BBC Sports Journalist Stephen Watson has been following this project given its historic significance of an iconic road race that brought racing legends to the roads at Temple.

The granite monument also ultimately memorialises Mr Philip Conroy, a local rider who passed away at the last event in 1999. He was one of a roster of champions

The ‘Live longer and stronger’ campaign aims to raise awareness of agerelated deconditioning and the importance of physical activity and will run in community pharmacies throughout August and September as part of the Living Well service.

Living Well is offered in over 500 pharmacies across Northern Ireland and provides information and advice on public health issues. It is delivered in partnership with the Public Health Agency (PHA), Community Pharmacy NI (CPNI), and the Department of Health (DoH).

Jeff Scroggie, Health

and Social Wellbeing Improvement Manager and Ageing Well Lead at the PHA said: “It is never too late to gain health benefits from physical activity. Ageing is inevitable, but the pace at which physical changes occur can be slowed or even reversed with regular physical activity.

“Including some physical activity into your weekly routine will benefit you mentally as well as increase your quality of life. It can help make you feel happier, keep your brain sharp, prevent falls and help to keep you living independently to enjoy life and activities with friends and family for longer.”

Local Community Pharmacist Killian Johnston from H Sweeny Pharmacy, Quayside Shopping Centre in Derry/Londonderry, welcomed the campaign.

He said: “Community pharmacy is an ideal setting to help encourage people to look after their health by engaging in initiatives such as the Living Well campaigns.

“You are more likely to maintain your independence and overall wellbeing if you have led an active lifestyle and made healthier choices throughout your life. The more time spent being physically active, the greater the health benefits

including better sleep.

“Pharmacy teams will be promoting the benefits of physical activity and where possible, signposting to relevant local groups and activities people can take part in. We would encourage patients and customers to call into their local pharmacy to ask for advice and information.”

Gerard Walls, Senior Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Officer at the PHA, said: “The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend being active for at least two and a half hours each week, including doing activities that can help improve muscle strength

and balance at least twice a week. We would recommend breaking up the activity into smaller bouts across the week and limit the amount of time spent being sedentary, such as lying or sitting.

“It is also important to remember that everyone has a different starting point, if this level of weekly activity is not achievable for you, start with light activities, such as walking, try to walk a bit faster than normal, cleaning or gardening is also a good way to try to build up gradually.

“Research shows that from 50 years of age we naturally lose muscle and bone density year on year, but being active can help reverse this.

“Regular physical activity provides physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits, including having a healthier heart and helping to lower the risk of developing conditions like dementia, Type 2 diabetes, stroke and some cancers.

“Even relatively small increases in physical activity can contribute to improved health and quality of life. No matter

how active you may be, doing a little more can help. Every movement counts.”

Top tips

Limit the amount of time spent being sedentary, such as lying or sitting.

Activities that improve strength and balance, such as carrying heavy shopping bags, yoga or doing exercises that use your own body weight, such as push-ups or wall presses and sit to stands. These activities will help to reduce the risk of falls and help you feel more confident.

Find out what group

activities happen in your local leisure centres, churches or community centres.

Join a local Walking for Health group. They cater for walkers of all abilities.

Take a walk with friends, rather than sitting with them for a chat.

Do some strengthening activities, such as standing up from a chair without using your arms or aided if needed.

Move around the house.

Cleaning and gardening counts as physical activity. You could use the time waiting for the kettle to

boil to walk up and down the stairs or do some lunges, wall presses or heel raises.

Work on your balance by standing on one leg while you brush your teeth.

As part of the Living Well campaign, community pharmacies across Northern Ireland are providing free information leaflets. In addition to the campaign materials, information on ways to get active and advice about how to eat and drink well as we get older is available at www. choosetolivebetter.com

Supercar weekend power S

The highly recognised ‘Supercar Sunday’ weekend in aid of Air Ambulance NI charity is celebrating the largest total raised ever, £95,000 to save lives across Northern Ireland.

The funds raised fully fund the life-saving service for two weeks and during that time it is likely that the medical team will be called out to 14 critically ill or injured patients. This event, not only brings car enthusiasts together but also highlights the power of community spirit and the importance of charitable giving. It’s wonderful to see such a substantial contribution being made to a cause that directly helps save lives.

The event, now in its fifth year, saw hundreds of supercars and hyper cars on display in Portstewart on Saturday 27th July and in Bishopscourt Racing Circuit, Downpatrick on Sunday 28th July.

Thousands of the public attended this exclusive opportunity to see some of the most exciting brands on the market together in one place. Vehicles featured

included Lamborghinis, McLarens, Aston Martins, Ferraris and many other exotic car brands as well as 300 motorbikes for the first time.

Car owners also got to enjoy a glittering gala ball on Saturday 27th July with a ‘Casino Royale’ theme held at the world-renowned Titanic Building, Belfast.

Ronan Cunningham and his family deserve huge recognition for channelling their passion and energy into organising this event, especially with such a remarkable outcome. The fact that it was inspired by a previous patient of the Air Ambulance who made a remarkable recovery adds a deeply personal and inspiring element to the event.

This kind of motivation often brings out the best in communities, as people can directly

see the impact of their support. The success of the event is a testament to the dedication of the Cunningham family and all those who participated and donated.

Ronan said, “I would like to thank the car community of Ireland for coming together to make such a special weekend and also a huge thanks to the public who came in their thousands not only to see the event but even more importantly donate to the charity with 100 Percent of ticket sales going directly to the charity. I would also like to say a special thanks to Bishopscourt Racing circuit and the NW pits for donating the two venues to hold the event and finally to all the very special volunteers who came and donated their valuable time.”

Kerry Anderson, Head of Fundraising at the charity Air Ambulance

NI said, “We are truly blown away by the incredible support for the fifth year from Supercar Sunday. On behalf of our trustees, charity staff team and volunteers, we want to express a heartfelt thank you to the Cunningham family, sponsors, volunteers, car owners and everyone who went along to the Supercar

Sunday Weekend 2024.

The wonderful weekend of events has resulted in a phenomenal donation to our charity that will fund the Air Ambulance for two full weeks and potentially save many lives. There was a tremendous amount of hard work, effort and time poured into making this event happen and

we are truly grateful to everyone who played a part in this. It’s not just the medical team who save lives, but the people like you who support our service ensuring it is there for everyone who needs it.”

Air Ambulance NI needs to raise almost £7,000 every day to sustain this lifeline.

When a life hangs in the balance as a result of a serious road traffic collision, farm or workplace accident or simple fall downstairs, the doctor and paramedic on board the helicopter can reach anywhere in Northern Ireland in a matter of minutes. They then provide potentially life-saving care and interventions at the scene. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is provided by a unique partnership between the charity and the Northern Ireland Ambulance

Service. Operational for 7 years now, air ambulance has been tasked on over 4,300 occasions. For more information, please see www.airambulanceni. org

Financial support for children with disabilities or additional needs

Many parents of children with additional needs are unaware that they may be entitled to financial support – here’s an overview of the support that may be available to families:

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

Children under 16 with a disability or additional needs may be entitled to Disability Living Allowance (DLA), while those over 16 can receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP). The amount received will depend on the condition and how it affects the child.

Depending on household circumstances, entitlement

to DLA or PIP can also help with entitlement to other benefits such as Universal Credit, Tax Credits and Carers Allowance.

Higher payments of other benefits

As soon as possible after receiving a positive DLA or PIP decision you should contact whoever pays your current benefits to tell them you’re now getting DLA or PIP, as this could result in you getting higher payments of the following:

• Universal Credit

• Child Tax Credit

• Housing Benefit.

You’ll be exempt from the ‘benefit cap’ which limits the amount of benefit payments a household can receive, and also may be eligible for help towards your household rates if you have made any adaptations to your home to meet the needs of the person with the disability.

If you do not currently receive any benefits

The awarding of a disability benefit is a significant change in circumstances. The entitlement to DLA or PIP may mean that households with a higher income, and who would not otherwise be eligible, can qualify for support.

You should contact an independent benefits advisor who can check if this change means that your household has now become entitled to any other benefits, such as Universal Credit.

Carer’s Allowance and Carer Element

Parents and others who care for someone in receipt of DLA or PIP could be eligible to receive Carer’s Allowance, which is paid weekly at a rate of £81.90. Eligibility depends on both the circumstances of the carer and those of the person being cared for.

If the carer is in receipt of Universal Credit and is in receipt of Carer’s Allowance, or would be in receipt of Carers

Allowance if it weren’t for their income being too high, they may be eligible for an additional Carer Element of Universal Credit of £198.31 per month.

For a couple with one partner working and the other not working but in receipt of Carers Allowance they can meet the criteria for financial support with their registered childcare costs which otherwise require both members in a couple to be working.

Autumn He A lt H

A cks

Autumn might be one of the most picturesque seasons of the year, but few will deny that the colder, darker and wetter weather makes it harder to stay motivated to exercise.

Exercising in this season can be somewhat daunting. Dragging oneself from the comfort of their warm and comfortable bed to battle the elements during a morning run is the stuff of nightmares for many – however you can reap serious rewards when bracing the weather to get out and about this autumn season.

Seasonal adjustment disorder is but one condition that can be alleviated by regular exercise. Numerous studies have shown that incorporating exercise into your daily routine can boost one’s mood as well as decreasing stress, anxiety and depression. So getting up and out

will not only benefit your physically, but also mentally.

Changing up your routine is one way of staying motivated to exercise this autumn.

Whilst going for a morning run might have seemed attractive when the weather was dry and warm, the colder and wetter mornings might be better suited for an indoor swim. Perhaps joining a gym is the best way to stay fit over the winter, providing an indoor environment that can encourage exercise no matter the weather.

In the same way, mixing up your diet is important to staying healthy this autumn.

Salads and fruit might

have been the order of the day during the summer months, but your body will need more sustenance to fight off the flu and keep you warm during the winter season.

Mixing some soups, chowders and shakes into your diet can be a great

way of diversifying your diet and making sure that you do not get bored eating the same old meals time and time again. One benefit of the nights getting longer is that many find it significantly easier to get a long night sleep.

As it gets dark earlier, it is often easier to get into a night time routine and securing those essential 8 hours rest per night –studies have found that those who get less than 6 hours sleep per night tend to have a higher than average BMI.

How to Carve a Pumpkin: A Step-by-Step Guide

Carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns is a beloved fall tradition. To create your own spooky masterpiece, follow these simple steps:

Choose your pumpkin.

Select a sturdy pumpkin with a flat bottom for stability. A thick stem will help hold your candle or light. Draw your design. Use a marker or pencil to sketch out your desired design on the pumpkin. You can freehand it or use a stencil for more intricate patterns. Cut a lid. Create a circular lid at the top of the pumpkin, ensuring it’s large enough to fit your hand inside.

Scoop out the seeds. Remove the seeds and stringy pulp from the inside of the pumpkin. This can be messy, so wearing gloves and an apron is recommended. Carve your design. Carefully cut along the

lines you drew earlier to create your design. Start with larger shapes and gradually work your way to smaller details.

Add a light. Once your carving is complete, insert a candle or batterypowered light inside your pumpkin. This will illuminate your design and create a spooky glow.

Tips:

• To prevent your pumpkin from rotting quickly, coat the inside with petroleum jelly after carving.

• If carving isn’t your forte, you can find precarved pumpkins at many stores.

• Get creative with your designs! Carve anything from classic jack-o’lanterns to spooky ghosts, animals, or even movie

Instructions:

3. Purée the soup using a blender or immersion blender until smooth.

4. Stir in heavy cream, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!

KIA EV3: UK PRICING AND SPECIFICATION

ANNOUNCED

PEUGEOT E-3008

By 2025, PEUGEOT will offer the widest range of electric cars of any generalist brand in Europe, and PEUGEOT is replacing its best-seller with an all-new electric fastback SUV: the Next-Level E-3008.

Kia UK has announced pricing and specifications for the Kia EV3 this summer, with pre-orders now open for the brand’s most affordable electric vehicle yet.

Following the example of the EV6 and EV9, Kia will offer three grades to EV3 buyers in the UK: ‘Air’, ‘GT-Line’ and ‘GT-Line S’, each with a generously equipped specification as standard.

The EV3 ‘Air’ is offered with a choice of 58.3kWh or 81.4kWh battery packs, with the ability to travel up to 267 miles with the 58.3kWh version, or up to 372 miles on the larger longrange 81.4kWh battery pack.

‘GT-Line’ and ‘GT-Line S’ versions are offered solely with the larger 81.4kWh battery choice, and are capable of driving up to 347 miles on a single charge (WLTP ‘combined’ cycle*).

UK customer deliveries will start from late 2024, with customers able to choose from all variants from launch. Fleet customers will benefit from the two per cent BIK (benefit-in-kind) rate for EVs in 2024/25 and three per cent for the 2025/26 tax years.

Standard equipment across the EV3 line-up

Every EV3 offers a generous repertoire of standard equipment. This includes:

EV3 ‘Air’ from £32,995

The starting point for the EV3 line-up is the ‘Air’ grade. This is priced from

£32,995 on-the-road for the 58.3kWh battery pack, and £35,995 with the long-range 81.4kWh battery pack. Both battery packs feature a frontwheel drive single-motor powertrain, producing up to 201bhp and peak torque of 283Nm. The 58.3kWh battery pack is capable of travelling up to 267 miles on a single charge, while the long-range 81.4kWh has a maximum driving range of 372 miles (WLTP ‘combined’ cycle).

As with almost all Kia models, the generous list of standard equipment means the only option for customers to choose is the paint. EV3 ‘Air’ models feature an eye-catching

Sunset Orange as standard, with four optional premium colours – White Pearl, Midnight Black, Lithium Silver, and Frost Blue –available for an additional £625.

EV3 ‘GT-Line’ from £39,495 By choosing the ‘GTLine’ grade, the EV3 features the long-range 81.4kWh battery pack for a driving range of up to 347 miles (WLTP ‘combined’ cycle), more aggressive ‘GT-Line’ styling cues, and an even longer list of standard equipment adding the following over ‘Air’ variants:

Like the ‘Air’, the EV3 ‘GT-Line’ is offered as

standard with Sunset Orange paintwork. For £625 extra, available premium paint options are White Pearl, Midnight Black, Shale Grey or Pistachio Green.

EV3 ‘GT-Line S’ model from £42,995

10 home jobs you cannot DIY

When it comes to jobs around the home there are some things you shouldn’t try yourself, especially when 47% of Brits have had a DIY disaster*.

Your unqualified hands could put you in a lot of danger, and worse, put others in danger. You could even invalidate your home insurance, which would leave you in a really difficult situation and with a heavy repair cost.

This list by no means covers everything, but it does answer the most common queries we get on whether to hire a pro or not for a job.

1) Fixing a gas leak. In fact, anything to do with gas. You must legally be on the Gas Safe Register to deal

with any gas appliances. Attempting to fix anything gas related can have serious effects on your health and the safety of others around you, not to mention the potential of an explosion.

2) Removing asbestos. Asbestos is dangerous, so removing it is best left to the professionals. Asbestos comes with serious health risks. So much so that in 1999, the dangers of asbestos were officially recognised in the UK. All use of asbestos was banned. To have asbestos removed, you will need a qualified

surveyor to carry out an inspection.

3) Fitting a new bath. Whether you’re upgrading your entire bathroom, or you’re having issues with your current bathtub, you should definitely leave the installation of a new tub to a professional. Failure to do so could result in a leak in your home and a very unrelaxing soak in the tub!

4) Knocking down an internal wall. Knocking down an internal wall is a great way to open up your living space and create a free-flowing area to enjoy. But knocking down an internal wall is not a DIY job, so don’t start swinging your sledgehammer around. The wall could be loadbearing. If you attempt to knock down a load-bearing wall without any steel reinforcement, it will result in your ceilings falling through, and whatever is above it coming down too.

5) Foundation work. The foundations of any building

are the most important part of the structure. If the foundations are wrong, then the subsoil can spread and the structure can settle unequally, leading to structural problems down the line. Good foundations are a lot more than just digging a hole and pouring some concrete in, it needs to be exactly right.

6) Window installation. A poorly fitted window leads to lots of problems. These include: Injury to yourself, your family, and people passing by Reduced home efficiency (energy loss, draughts and leaks) Lack of security Legal and insurance ramifications Structural issues and a poor finish (mould and mildew may appear) Avoid these risks and work with a professional window fitter.

7) Tree removal. Cutting down a tree is dangerous work. Although there’s a risk of falling from a height, there’s also the risk of being hit by debris. And even if the

falling debris misses you, other people, houses and vehicles nearby may not be so lucky. A professional tree surgeon will know exactly how to control the removal of your tree. They have the experience, they have the tools, and they know how best to cut a tree of any size. Even better, they will remove your tree much quicker than you would yourself.

8) Electrical work. Electrical work, similar to gas work, requires a highly qualified professional to take on the job, due to safety reasons. Incorrect or unsafe wiring is dangerous. Not only is it a massive fire risk, but it could electrocute you, a member of your family, or guests.

9) Roof installation and repairs. Your roof protects you from the elements, but only if it has been installed or repaired correctly. Keeping it watertight and making sure there are no leaks is so important. A

damaged roof can lead to lots of problems in your home, from damp, leaking ceilings to severe structural damage.

Patching it up yourself can be dangerous without the correct safety equipment. Getting up onto the roof is a risk to yourself.

Then once you’re there there’s also the risk that you do not patch up the roof correctly, meaning the damage will worsen over time.

10) Pest infestations.

Pest control specialists can have your home cleared of unwanted visitors quickly without you having to live in fear of living with whatever pest it may be. Prices usually start at around £120 to have mice and rats removed. Pest controllers can also remove bedbugs, cockroaches and ants.
