DRINK DRIVING AMONG NI MALE DRIVERS AN ISSUE

The latest PSNI data on motoring offences, analysed by CompareNI.com, showed that from the 1st September 2023 to 31st August 2024, males accounted for 29,267 of all motoring offences committed in Northern Ireland.

In comparison, women accounted for just 6,730 of all motoring offences during the same time period – meaning 8 in 10 of all offences were committed by men.*

Drink driving remains within the top five motoring offences, an issue of concern as the festive season approaches. These recent figures for drink or drug driving show 2,355 offences by men and 584 by women.

A recent survey by CompareNI, Northern Ireland’s largest price comparison site, revealed nearly a quarter of drivers, 24%, say drink or drug drivers is their biggest fear on the roads this winter. Last Christmas, the PSNI recorded nearly 300 arrests for drink or drug driving in just one month, from 1st December 2023 –1st January 2024, 83% of which were male. The high-

est number of arrests were made in Belfast (65), Derry City and Strabane (37) and Mid Ulster (36) - while Fermanagh and Omagh experienced the largest decrease in arrests when compared with the same period last year (from 31 to 9). Over half of those arrested were between 30 and 49 years old. The youngest person arrested for drink or drug driving offences during the PSNI 2023/24 Christmas campaign was 14 years old, while the oldest was 82. A rising issue is the lack of awareness of drug or drunk driving the following morning. A good night’s sleep, coffee, breakfast or a cold shower will not actually help drivers sober up*** –only time will reduce the alcohol in the body, with one in five drivers convicted for drink driving caught the next morning.

With Christmas party planning well underway, Translink has revealed full details of its popular late-night bus, coach and train services at weekends starting on Saturday 30th November.

Working with a range of partners including the Belfast’s Business Improvement Districts, Hospitality Ulster, Visit Belfast and local taxi

companies fonaCAB and Valuecabs, the aim is to encourage revellers to use public transport to visit the city and enjoy all the festive delights that

Belfast has to offer in the knowledge they can get a bus, coach or train home.

Late-night Belfast Metro services will operate every Friday and

Saturday starting around midnight and run through to 1.30am.

Section S of peace wall S et to be removed for new S hared community building

Over 40 metres of peace wall will be removed in the second phase of a shared space project on Ballygomartin Road in west Belfast.

Construction of eight new community office units has begun following the opening of the £7 million Black Mountain Shared Space (BMSS) on the former Finlay’s factory site earlier this year.

The latest phase of the project aims to create a new complementary building where multiple community organisations will base themselves beside the main BMSS building. By clustering grassroots community organisations on the same site, it is hoped that stronger links will be developed between them, enabling future collaboration on community development projects. This in turn will support and build upon the ongoing cross community work being delivered by the team in the main BMSS building. Phase two of the

BMSS project will be delivered by Belfast City Council and is funded by the International Fund for Ireland, the Department for Communities and the Department of Justice.

Communities

Minister Gordon Lyons MLA said “I am delighted that my department’s commitment to this exciting development is continuing through this second phase. This will add to the regeneration of this previously derelict site, supporting Black Mountain Shared Space in opening up opportunities for local communitybased organisations to work here for the benefit of the people who live here. I am looking forward to the completion of the whole site as a key long term asset for the community.”

Seamus Corr,

Manager of Black Mountain Shared Space said: “We welcome the commencement of the second phase of the project which marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to promote more collaboration across historically divided

communities. This new development represents a tremendous opportunity for local grassroots organisations to work closely together. By creating a hub for these organisations, we believe stronger relationships will

be forged, enabling greater collaboration on vital community development projects.”

“We are proud to be working in partnership with Belfast City Council, the International Fund for Ireland, the Department for Communities and

the Department of Justice to bring this vision to life. Together, we are confident this project will not only enhance our ongoing cross-community work, but also contribute to the physical and social regeneration of the area. Black Mountain

Shared Space remains committed to fostering peace and unity, and we look forward to the positive impact this new phase will have on

Cost of living support guide at Anti-Poverty Networking Event

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray has launched a new Cost of living Support Guide at an Anti-Poverty Networking Event in Belfast City Hall.

As winter begins and with Christmas ahead, the free guide will be shared at a time when residents continue to grapple with rising costs. Outlining a range of communitybased support services, the new guide signposts to important benefits, grants, and referral services while also providing practical tips on how to save money particularly around energy and food bills.

The support organisations featured in the guide joined other key stakeholders at a networking event in Belfast City Hall to foster further collaboration and innovation. Listening to the range of inspirational speakers, lived experiences dominated the event delivering a practical and co-ordinated response to the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Organised by Belfast City Council, Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray welcomed guests to the event explaining “Poverty is not just a statistic; it’s a reality that impacts our friends, neighbours, and families. Belfast City Council is committed to

tackling poverty as part of the inclusive growth and anti-poverty strands of the Belfast Agenda.

While there are no quick fixes, it’s only by working together, that we as a city, can begin to make a difference for struggling residents.

From food banks to warm spaces, our new cost of living support guide highlights the variety of support services available across the city. We’re

pleased to welcome so many of these hardworking organisations to City Hall today, not only to acknowledge their important contribution, but to be a catalyst for new partnerships, innovative strategies and renewed commitments to our common cause.”

With tailored sections for families and older people, the new guide also includes a list of ‘warm and welcome spaces’ across the

including local leisure centres who

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Celebrate Major Milestone!

The global music icon, businesswoman, and philanthropist sent a heartfelt thank you to the company for its incredible work over the past four years

Hagan Homes, in partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, has delivered 50,000 books to children across Belfast.

This significant milestone highlights the extraordinary impact of the charitable initiative, which has been inspiring a love of reading and building literacy skills among the city’s youngest residents since 2020.

Dolly Parton herself congratulated Hagan Homes on reaching this remarkable milestone, in a video saying, “We should all be proud of these amazing numbers. All these achievements have very little to do with me and everything to do with you. You’ve brought so much joy to so many families and children and I just simply want to say, thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me inspire children to love reading.”

To celebrate the occasion, Hagan Homes hosted a special storytelling event recently

at Carew Family Centre in east Belfast. Jim Burke, Director of Sales and Acquisitions at Hagan Homes, was delighted to meet some of the children and their parents at the event.

Since the partnership between Hagan Homes and the Imagination Library began, more than 2,800 children have been impacted by the programme, with 1,443 currently enrolled and receiving a free, ageappropriate book each month. The initiative, operated through nine Sure Start Centres in Belfast, continues to make a profound difference in the lives of children and families across the city.

A heartfelt video featuring Dolly Parton and local Belfast children has been shared with Hagan Homes to commemorate the 50,000th book milestone. The video, filled with messages of gratitude from Sure Start centres and families, captures how much the programme means to the community.

Dr. Marion Gillooly, Executive Director from The Dollywood Foundation UK, said, “It was an absolute joy watching the videos come in – they really get across how much the programme means to families and the children especially.”

James Hagan, Chair and Founder of Hagan Homes, said, “When

we first started working with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 2020, we were inspired by the pioneering work of Brenda McMullen, who set up the first Imagination Library in Northern Ireland at Cliftonville Integrated Primary School. It has been our privilege to continue what she started and to expand the reach of this wonderful initiative. Reaching the 50,000th book is reflective of the power of community and the importance of investing in our children’s future.”

The initiative has also been warmly received

by parents. One parent shared, “We have noticed when the postman comes, our son gets really, really excited because the postman comes with his envelope with his own name on it, so he gets to open that envelope once a month, and he’s so excited to see a different book.”

She added: “The books that we’ve received have all been so different; there have been regular books that I read to him, flip books and texture books. This allows us to have a big range, rather than the same types.”

East Belfast Sure Start Co-ordinator, Tracey Ripley-McElvogue, echoed the importance of the programme, stating, “To celebrate the occasion, Hagan Homes hosted a special storytelling event with East Belfast Sure Start parents and children at Carew Family Centre in East Belfast. The Hagan Homes team were delighted to meet some of the children and their parents at the event.”

As Hagan Homes

continues its partnership with the Imagination Library, the company urges other businesses and individuals to get involved. James said: “At Hagan Homes, we’re not just about building homes; we’re about building communities. We encourage others to join us in this vital mission to support the next generation and to create a legacy of literacy that will benefit Belfast for years to come.”

Dolly Parton, through the Dollywood Foundation, covers all infrastructure costs associated with the programme so when it partners with a local community, it just asks that they fundraise to cover the cost of books and mailing, which is on average £2.16 per child per month (£26 per child per year).

Tearfund and SPAR NI festive appeal

‘Break the Cycle of Poverty’, the new festive appeal from Tearfund in partnership with SPAR, EUROSPAR and ViVO stores across Northern Ireland, will aim to raise £350,000 through shopper donations this year.

What’s more, the retailer will match every £1 raised by shoppers, meaning an incredible £700,000 could go towards people living in extreme poverty around the world, like Malich and her family.

Malich’s family live in northern Kenya, in a community where, traditionally, they relied on livestock farming to survive. Constant cycles of droughts and floods mean that is no longer possible. Malich must search for water or rely on water trucks to refill tanks which they eke out, little by little. Her family also survives on little more than wild fruit to eat.

Chris Thompson, Tearfund’s Director in Northern Ireland says it’s often women that bear the brunt of this; “Women like Malich are walking tens of kilometers in search of jerry cans of water and fruit to pick, which leaves them vulnerable to attacks while they seek to keep their families alive.

“Tearfund exists to empower individuals like Malich, and the communities they live in, to break the cycle and lift themselves out of extreme poverty. We’ve been working in communities in this area

of Kenya for three years enabled by our supporters’ generosity, including SPAR, EUROSPAR and ViVO shoppers. Our partners have also been supporting drought recovery through a resilience-building project, helping people explore viable alternative livelihoods, such as crop and chicken farming.”

Passionate about helping families thrive through food security, Chef Stephen Jeffers, who runs Belfast’s Forestside Cookery School, has come on board to support the festive appeal for 2024.

Stephen adds; “As a chef, I’m passionate about food and its power to

bring people together. I love getting family and friends around the table to enjoy some good grub and it breaks my heart that around the world, families are having to travel so far in search of the very basics.

That’s why I’m delighted to be supporting Tearfund’s Christmas Appeal this year, helping to break the cycle of poverty for families around the world. Please give what you can.”

Over the past 12 years, fundraising by shoppers in SPAR, EUROSPAR, ViVO, ViVOXTRA and ViVO Essentials stores in Northern Ireland, matched by the retailers, has positively impacted over half a million

people living in extreme poverty around the world.

Chris Thompson finished; “Around the world, we see the impact that donations have on the most vulnerable. Thank you to the SPAR, EUROSPAR and ViVO staff, as well as to all who will donate to help families thrive and break the cycle of poverty for good.”

Break the Cycle of Poverty is now live, with donation boxes in SPAR, EUROSPAR, ViVO and ViVOXTRA stores throughout Northern Ireland, running until 31st January 2025. Shoppers can also donate online and find out more via tearfund.org/ spar.

Holly and Ivy

JV Allister explores the evergreen relationship between holly, ivy and Christmas.

“The holly and the ivy, When they are both full grown,

Of all the trees that are in the wood,

The holly bears the crown.”

This is an extract from a well-known Christmas carol which was written down about 100 years ago, but which was probably based on older rhymes, reflecting beliefs and myths dating way back when.

And with perceived magical properties, they were central to the celebration of winter festivals.

Both plants were associated with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, which coincided with the winter solstice, while the presence of ivy was thought to offset the effects of alcohol but was also used to signal the arrival of new wine in ancient hostelries.

Ivy is still sometimes woven into the names of pubs.

In fact, people have been bringing holly and ivy into their living and working spaces for centuries, and possibly

There was a time when people were closer to nature than we are today, when they valued and venerated evergreen plants like holly and ivy because they lived through the winter, representing ongoing life and the hope for seasons to come.

thunder and lightning, evil spirits and malevolent fairies, or alternatively to provide a cosy indoor home for good fairies. They were also valued for bringing balance and harmony to family and home life. Of course, it was no surprise that pagan beliefs translated into Christian symbolism, connecting the spiny holly leaves with Jesus’ crown of thorns, and the red berries with the drops of blood shed for humanity’s salvation, which helped perpetuate

anticipated passing of winter, at Christmas. Indeed, prior to the use of conifers, introduced by German monarchs in England, the holly was known, not just as a Christmas tree, but the Christmas Tree.

And let’s not forget that, in nature, holly and ivy provide critical food and shelter for many animals. So, if you’re cutting any branches to decorate your home, please don’t take more than you need, and leave some berries for the birds.

Make sure you are accessing all the financial support you are entitled to this Christmas

Contact the Family Benefits Advice Service to find out what support is available to your family.

The festive season is upon us once again and amidst the excitement this can also be a worrying time for many families. The run up to Christmas inevitably means additional expenses, both in terms of presents and extra food for family get togethers, but also the continuing financial pressures of rising household bills, and the cost of heating and lighting our homes through the darkest and coldest time of the year.

We would encourage all parents to take a few minutes this festive season and get in touch with the Family Benefits Advice Service to make sure their family is receiving all the financial support they are entitled to. In the past year our advisors identified an average of £1,494 in additional financial support for the families we carried

out a calculation for.

So before 2025 starts make the decision to call us to ensure you will be starting the new year knowing exactly what support you are entitled to, and how to apply for it. Don’t miss out because you think you won’t be entitled to support, or that it will be too complicated.

Here’s two examples of families we have helped become better off:

Kathryn is a single mum of 1 child returning to work after being on maternity leave. While receiving Statutory Maternity Pay she has also been in receipt of Universal Credit and wanted check if this would remain the best form of support when she returned to work full time. We advised that whilst she still would have an entitlement to Universal Credit, she would actually be better

off by £2033 per year by moving to Tax-Free Childcare, which would also allow her to claim support through the NI Childcare Subsidy Scheme.

Amy and John have one child, John is unable to carry on working due to an accident at work leaving him with permanent injuries.

John’s injuries also mean that he is unable to look after their young child by himself. They are in receipt of Universal Credit and were worried that they would no longer get help with their childcare costs as John is no longer working.

We were able to advise that John could apply for Limited Capability for

Work through Universal Credit and therefore they would continue to get the help with childcare costs while only Amy remained in work. Employers For Childcare provides advice and guidance on a wide range of support including Tax-Free Childcare, Universal Credit and disability or other social security benefits. Contact our helpline on 028 9267 8200 or email hello@ employersforchildcare. org for free, impartial and confidential advice. In the meantime, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all the team at Employers For Childcare.

Visit Belfast celebrates ‘Best Event

Destination UK’ win at C&IT Awards

Belfast has once again asserted its position as a premier destination for business tourism and events, securing the city’s status as an unbeatable host destination at this year’s Conference & Incentive Travel (C&IT) awards in London.

Visit Belfast, the city region’s destination marketing organisation (DMO) secured ‘Best Event Destination UK’ at the annual awards – the most influential in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibition (MICE) tourism sector, recognising quality across the industry and celebrating excellence in hospitality, event planning, venues and in destination appeal.

It was the second time this year that Visit Belfast has triumphed on the international stage. In June, it won the top award for ‘Best Convention Bureau’ at the micebook annual awards, recognising its commitment to delivering world class events with

excellence, innovation and impact.

Visit Belfast, which this year marks 25 years of tourism growth success for the city, has secured the industry’s top destination title at the annual C&IT awards for many years, including in 2023, when it won three major accolades, including ‘world’s best conference destination’.

It has now held the ‘best destination’ title for six out of the last seven years.

Meanwhile, ICC

Belfast, the city’s stunning international convention centre, was this year shortlisted for the C&IT 2024 ‘Best UK Venue’ award, marking a significant achievement that recognises the strengthened strategic

partnership between the two organisations to promote Belfast as a compelling and unique hub for global conferences and events.

Business events attract high spending visitors throughout the year and play an important role in a balanced tourism portfolio attracting conferences, meetings and business and incentive programmes which bring benefits across Northern Ireland.

Last year (2023-2024) was a record one for business events in Belfast, with 92 conferences held in the city attracting over 32,000 delegates, securing 97,000 bed nights and worth £42.5m in economic impact. When compared with prepandemic performance, business bed nights were up 34 percent ahead of 2019 levels and economic impact performance was 22 percent higher than 2019, demonstrating a strong recovery for Belfast in a challenging operating environment.

Gerry Lennon, Chief Executive of Visit Belfast, commented on the city’s remarkable success:

“Being recognised as Best Event Destination UK is an outstanding achievement for Belfast and we don’t take these awards lightly. This

important win, alongside ICC Belfast’s shortlisting as Best UK Venue reflects the city’s growing influence in the international events market for its ability to deliver unique, memorable and highly successful events.

Thanks to strong collaboration between Belfast City Council, our partners and wider tourism sector, Belfast continues to make a demonstrable mark as a leading destination for

conferences and events and we look forward to building further on this success.”

The Visit Belfast award supports a wider strategy to double the number of international conferences hosted in Northern Ireland annually and attract three times the number of delegates from the UK and Ireland by 2030.

Launched in 2022, the Northern Ireland Business Events Strategy, supported by Tourism Northern

Ireland, Visit Belfast and Visit Derry, the strategy could generate an additional £209 million in direct economic impact and up to 2,000 new jobs by 2030.

Established in 1999 as the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau (BVCB), Visit Belfast is a not-for-profit public, private and community partnership focused on driving city and regional tourism growth through business events, leisure breaks and cruise.

Clever Christmas Lighting Ideas for Your Home

Christmas is a time for joy, celebration, and of course, twinkling lights!

A well-lit home can instantly transform it into a festive wonderland. Here are some clever ideas to inspire your Christmas lighting:

The Classic Christmas Tree: Instead of just stringing lights around the tree, consider adding other lit decorative elements.

Experiment with coloured lighting like red, blue, or purple, or create a themed tree like winter wonderland (icicle lights, cool white or blue), warm white vintage bulbs, or rustic yellow or orange lights.

Illuminate Your Windows: Window clings are a great way

to add a festive touch to your windows without taking up space. They come in various designs, from snowflakes to Santa Claus and you can surround with fairy lights or enhance with LED tea lights in jars, or in lanterns on the window sill. For a simpler look, drape a garland of greenery or twinkling lights across your windowsill.

Outdoor Lighting Magic: Line your pathways with solarpowered lanterns or string lights to guide guests safely to your door.

Wrap your roofline and eaves with lights to create a dazzling glow. Highlight your outdoor trees and

shrubs with spotlights or string lights for a dramatic effect. Use a projector to illum DIY Christmas Lighting Projects:

• Mason Jar Lanterns: Gather mason jars, LED tea lights, and decorative elements like ribbon or glitter. Fill the jars with decorative elements and place a tea light inside.

Arrange the lanterns on your porch,

windowsill, or dining table.

Remember: Safety should always be your top priority when decorating with lights. Make sure to use outdoor-rated lights for outdoor spaces and avoid overloading electrical outlets. With a little creativity and imagination, you can transform your home into a magical Christmas wonderland.

Visiting a school is an important step in choosing a school, and this personal touch reflects Leadhill’s approach in supporting families.

As a smaller, nurturing school in the Castlereagh area, working to support parents and children is central to what Leadhill has to offer. Leadhill parents recognise the value of a primary school setting where every adult knows every child.

Village Market Shopping: A Treasure Trove Awaits!

Village markets offer a unique and charming shopping experience. The vibrant atmosphere, coupled with the opportunity to discover unique finds and connect with the community, sets them apart from traditional retail settings.

For those seeking a respite from the city’s fast pace, or simply looking to explore something extraordinary, a village market is an ideal destination.

One of the greatest attractions of village markets is the wide variety of goods on offer. From handmade crafts and vintage treasures to local produce and artisanal food, there’s something for everyone.

By shopping at a village market, you’re directly supporting local businesses

and artisans. It’s a fantastic way to give back to your community and help preserve traditional crafts and skills.

In addition to the unique finds, village markets offer a more immersive shopping experience than large department stores. You can chat with the makers, learn about their products, and get a sense of the story behind each item.

For foodies, village markets are a must-visit.

You’ll find an abundance

of fresh, seasonal produce, often sourced from local farms.

Village markets also provide a great opportunity to connect with your community. You’ll often find live music, street performers, and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

Tips for a Successful Village Market Shopping Trip:

• Do Your Research: Before you go, check the market’s website or social media pages to see what

vendors will be there. This will help you plan your trip and make sure you don’t miss anything.

• Arrive Early: To avoid the crowds and get the best selection of goods, it’s a good idea to arrive early in the morning.

• Wear Comfortable Shoes: You’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, so make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes.

• Bargain Wisely: Many vendors are open to negotiation, especially for

larger purchases. Don’t be afraid to haggle a little and see if you can get a better deal.

• Support Local Artisans: Look for vendors who are selling handmade or locally produced goods. By supporting these businesses, you’re helping to preserve traditional crafts and skills.

• Try Before You Buy: If possible, try on clothes or test out products before you buy them. This will help you ensure that you’re getting something you’ll love.

Budgeting for Christmas: t ips for a s tress- f ree h oliday s eason

The holiday season can be a magical time, but it can also be a financially stressful one.

With gifts, decorations, food, and travel expenses adding up, it’s easy to overspend. However, with a little planning and budgeting, you can enjoy a festive season without breaking the bank.

Setting a budget is the first step to a stress-free holiday season. Determine how much you can afford to spend on Christmas by considering your income, expenses, and savings. Once you’ve set your budget, create a spending plan by breaking it down into cate-

gories like gifts, decorations, food, and travel. This will help you stay on track and avoid overspending.

Prioritizing is another important factor. Not everyone needs to receive an expensive gift. Focus on giving meaningful presents to the people who are most important to you. Christmas experiences such as Santa Visits or Pantomimes are always a great investment!

Shopping early can also help you save money. Start your Christmas shopping

early to avoid last-minute purchases that can lead to overspending. Use coupons and discounts to save even more money on your purchases.

Making a gift list can help you stay organized and avoid impulse purchases. Decide on a budget for each person on your list and stick to it. Consider homemade gifts as a more meaningful and often less expensive alternative to store-bought items.

Setting aside money each week can help you avoid relying on credit cards. Remember to be mindful of

hidden costs like shipping costs, taxes, and gift wrapping when calculating your budget.

Avoid impulse purchases by sticking to your list and only buying what you need. Shopping online can save you time and money, as you can compare prices and find deals from the comfort of your home. Using cash instead of credit cards can also help you stay within your budget.

Bringing a list when you go shopping can help you stay focused and avoid impulse purchases. Don’t be afraid to haggle for a better

price, especially at flea markets and thrift stores. Consider secondhand shopping as a way to find unique and affordable gifts. By following these tips,

you can enjoy a stress-free and affordable Christmas season. Remember, the most important thing is spending quality time with loved ones, not breaking the bank.

Deck the Halls: A Guide to Christmas Decorating Beyond the Ordinary

Christmas is more than just a holiday; it’s a season of transformation. Let’s turn your home into a magical winter wonderland that reflects your unique personality.

1. Theme Beyond the Traditional: While red and green are classic, consider a theme that speaks to your heart. Is it a snowy mountain retreat, a fairytale castle, or a nautical adventure?

Let your imagination run wild.

2. Tree Tweaks: Instead of the usual ornaments, try decorating your tree with vintage toys, family heirlooms, or handmade paper ornaments. For a truly unique look, consider a non-traditional tree, like a bonsai or a collection of branches.

3. Window Wonders: Go beyond the standard wreaths and lights.

Create a winter scene with paper snowflakes, painted glass ornaments, or even miniature figurines. For a dramatic effect, project snow scenes onto your windows using a projector.

4. Cozy Corners: Transform a forgotten corner of your home into a cozy reading nook. Add a comfortable armchair, a soft blanket, and a festive string of lights. For an extra touch of magic, place a small Christmas tree with twinkling lights nearby.

5. DIY Delights: Instead of buying expensive decorations,

get creative with DIY projects. Make your own garlands, wreaths, and ornaments using materials you already have at home. For a personal touch, incorporate family photos or hand-written messages.

6. Edible Elegance: Let your Christmas decorations be a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. Decorate your tree with edible ornaments, like gingerbread men or sugar cookies. Create a festive centerpiece using fruit, nuts, and candles.

7. Sensory Surprise: Engage all your senses in your Christmas

decorating. Play Christmas carols, light scented candles, and create a cozy atmosphere with soft blankets and pillows. For a truly immersive experience, incorporate textures like faux fur, velvet, and corduroy.

8. Outdoor Oasis: Don’t forget to extend your Christmas cheer to your outdoor space. Create a winter wonderland with lights, snowmen, and festive planters. For a truly memorable experience, host a Christmas bonfire or outdoor movie night. Remember, the best Christmas decorations are the ones that reflect your personality and bring joy to your loved ones. So let your imagination

truly unforgettable.

Winter Wonderland: maximizing your outdoor Space

Winter in the UK can be harsh, but that doesn’t mean your outdoor space has to be neglected.

With a little creativity and planning, you can transform your garden into a cozy and inviting retreat, even during the coldest months.

To embrace the seasonal charm, consider planting winter-hardy flowers like pansies, violas, and cyclamen to add pops of colour. Evergreen shrubs and trees will provide yearround structure and interest.

Incorporate winter-themed decorations like wreaths,

garlands, and lanterns to create a festive atmosphere.

A bird feeder can also be a great way to attract feathered friends to your garden and add a touch of nature to your outdoor space. To create a cozy retreat, invest in a patio heater or fire pit to extend your outdoor enjoyment well into the evening. Opt for weather-resistant furniture and add cozy throws and

cushions for added comfort.

String up fairy lights or lanterns to create a warm and inviting ambiance.

To make the most of your space, consider placing potted plants on your patio or deck to add greenery and colour without the need for extensive planting. A small water feature like a fountain or bird bath can add a touch of tranquility to your outdoor space, even in winter.

Keep your outdoor area tidy by investing in storage solutions like sheds, bins, or plant pots. Winter also offers opportunities for outdoor activities. Enjoy stargazing on clear winter nights, or host a winter barbecue with the right equipment and a patio heater. Keep the kids entertained with winterfriendly outdoor games like snowball fights or building snowmen. you can transform your outdoor space into a winter

Packed Lunch Perfection: Tips for Nutritious School Lunches

HUNDREDS LIGHT UP THE NIGHT FOR AUTISM

Packed lunches offer a great way to ensure your child is fueled for a day of learning. But with so many options, it can be tough to know what to include. Here are some tips for creating nutritious and delicious school packed lunches:

Planning ahead is key to ensuring your child has a healthy and satisfying lunch every day. Weekly meal planning helps you stay organized and avoid lastminute unhealthy choices. Involving your child in the planning process can encourage healthy eating habits and make mealtime more enjoyable.

A balanced lunch should include a variety of foods from all food groups. Carbohydrates provide energy for the day, so opt for whole grains like brown rice, whole-wheat bread, or quinoa. Protein keeps your child feeling full and satisfied, and can be found in lean meats, beans, lentils, or eggs. Healthy fats support brain development, so include sources like nuts, seeds, and avocados. Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, so variety is key! Sandwiches don’t have to be boring. Beyond the basics, try whole-grain wraps, pita bread, or even lettuce leaves as a base. Experiment with fillings like hummus, avocado, grilled chicken, or leftover

Add-ons like sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, or a sprinkle of cheese can add extra flavor and nutrition.

Smart snacks can help your child stay fueled throughout the day. Fruit and vegetable sticks are easy to grab and go, while nuts and seeds provide a great source of protein and healthy fats. Yogurt is a nutritious option, and you can choose plain or Greek yogurt with added

fruit. Whole-grain crackers or cereal bars are also a satisfying and nutritious choice.

Making packed lunches fun can encourage your child to eat healthy. Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes from sandwiches or fruits. Involving your child in the packing process can also make mealtime more enjoyable. Consider allergies and dietary needs when packing

your child’s lunch. If your child has allergies or dietary restrictions, there are plenty of alternatives available. Label clearly all food items to avoid any confusion. By following these tips, you can create packed lunches that are both nutritious and enjoyable. Remember, a healthy lunch can make a big difference in your child’s overall well-being and academic performance.

Fundraising events like this are vital in the work Autism NI carries out and helps the charity provide life-changing services. All funds raised from the Glow Walk will go towards the running of Autism NI’s Helpline service which supports over 7,500 people in Northern Ireland every year.”

Parent Rebecca McBride said: “Our son Isaac is the warmest and smartest

boy, but not everyone understands him. We wanted to take part in the Glow Walk with Isaac to remind the world we aren’t all the same, but that difference is beautiful.

Autism NI’s helpline and

BHF reopens free defibrillator scheme to save lives in communities in Northern Ireland

BHF reopens free defibrillator scheme to save lives in communities in Northern Ireland

Communities across Northern Ireland are being urged to apply for a free lifesaving defibrillator from the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

This year, there are over 320 defibrillator packages available to communities across the UK as the charity relaunches its Community Defibrillator Funding Programme.

The heart charity has said areas with greatest need will be prioritised – those with high deprivation with limited access to defibrillators.

In Northern Ireland, the BHF says they’re particularly eager to receive applications from community groups in Ardoyne, North Belfast and Newhill in Ballymoney. At present, these areas have no defibrillator registered on The Circuit within them, based on available data on defibrillator locations from The Circuit: the national defibrillator network.

BHF’s community defibrillator programmes have helped fund 84 defibrillators across Northern Ireland over the past 10 years.

There are around 1,400 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests every year in

Northern Ireland. Tragically, less than one in ten people survive. This is partly because public access defibrillators are used in less than 11 per cent of out-ofhospital cardiac arrests in the UK.

Every minute without CPR and defibrillation after a cardiac arrest can reduce the chance of survival by up to 10 per cent. Early CPR and defibrillation is vital to give someone the best chance of survival.

The BHF wants everyone to have the best chance of survival from a cardiac arrest, no matter where they live.

There are over 96,000 defibrillators registered on The Circuit: the national defibrillator network, but they are not evenly distributed. Data from The Circuit has shown that more deprived communities need better support to help improve response times to an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The charity fears that gaps in the mapping and distribution of defibrillators is putting lives at risk.

That’s why the BHF hopes the programme will help reduce these defibrillator gaps and improve survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.

Fearghal McKinney, Head of BHF Northern Ireland said: “Every defibrillator has the power to save a life – that’s why I’m thrilled that we’re able to fully fund over 320 of these lifesaving devices for the areas that need it most across the UK and I would urge communities in Northern Ireland to apply.

“When someone has a cardiac arrest, every second counts – early access to a defibrillator is vital to give someone the best chance of survival.

“Although we have made progress, there are still too many communities that lack quick and easy access to a defibrillator. With the reopening of this fund, more communities will now have access to a defibrillator that can save lives.”

Communities are invited to apply for their free defibrillator on the BHF website here: https://www. bhf.org.uk/defibfunding

Local areas awarded one of these defibrillators will be provided with a defibrillator and cabinet, and installation costs will be covered where required. Communities awarded a defibrillator can order future replacement parts free of charge when they expire or are used in a rescue.

M £2.5 M energy efficiency funding

Economy Minister, Conor Murphy, has announced an additional £2.5m funding package for the NI Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP).

NISEP is a series of energy efficiency schemes with 80% of funding targeted at lowincome households delivered by the Energy Saving Trust on behalf of the Utility Regulator. This additional £2.5m funding will result in a range of energy efficiency measures being installed in approximately 1,000 low-income households.

Speaking at today’s announcement, Minister Murphy said: “Last year, my department provided £1m additional funding to NISEP, which helped almost 500 homes become more energy efficient. Today, I am pleased to announce that I am doubling that level of funding to £2.5m. This will allow 1,000

more vulnerable households across the north to install energy efficiency measures such as loft and cavity wall insulation. This will not only improve the warmth and comfort of their homes but also lower their energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions.

“I have been clear that decarbonisation is the cornerstone of my Economic Vision but that a transition to a greener and more sustainable economy must be a fair and just transition for all. At this time of severe budget pressures, this additional £2.5m funding indicates my ongoing determination to help those most vulnerable in our society.”

DACIA DUSTER NAMED ‘VALUE CAR OF THE YEAR’ AT THE NEWS UK MOTOR AWARDS 2024

For an impressive third year running, Dacia has won the ‘Value Car of the Year’ title in The Motor Awards with the All-New Duster taking the title previously awarded to the all-electric All-New Dacia Spring and seven-seat Dacia Jogger in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

Judged by News UK’s motoring experts at The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun, the adventurous All-New Duster SUV arrives at Dacia retailers this November with prices starting from £18,745 or just £117 per month on a 4.9% APR representative two-year Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) finance* deal.

Rob Gill, The Sun’s Motors Editor, said: “That’s a hat-trick for Dacia. They may as well keep the trophy! Jogger triumphed in 2022, then Spring in 2023, and now the brilliant £23,000 Duster 4x4 takes the crown as Value Car of the Year. Proper mechanical 4WD with high ground clearance and attack angles, chunky tyres and five drive modes. Winter proof. Looks ace. Incredible.”

practicality, all for a price that leaves incoming Chinese brand managers scratching their heads. A thoroughly worthy winner.”

Will Dron, editor of Driving.co.uk, said: “The Dacia Duster has always provided excellent value for money, but the latest version offers even more, with increased style, tech, efficiency and

This is the second award the All-New Duster has won before even arriving in UK showrooms.

Luke Broad, Dacia Brand Director for the UK, added: “While it’s true that Dacia offers some of the most

affordable cars in the UK, what we really strive for is to deliver the greatest value for our customers. That means we focus on not just an attractive purchase price, but also a generous level of standard equipment, centred around features that our customers tell us they find useful, wrapped up in Dacia’s typically adventurous style.”

The All-New Duster continues to offer the

value of its predecessor but with a distinctive new exterior design, a new, more digitallyconnected interior with enhanced interior space and comfort, the latest safety technologies, and the addition of two hybrid powertrains alongside its petrol and Bi-Fuel engines – plus a 4x4 version that takes its off-road capabilities to new heights.

Winter Motoring: Stay Safe on the Roads

This success is reflected across the passenger car range. The continued popularity of the Corsa Electric and Mokka Electric means Vauxhall is the leading brand for electric sales in the combined B-segment, with 9,358 sold year-todate. The Corsa Electric was also the UK’s bestselling electric supermini in September and leads the segment year-to-date, with 3,774 sold so far in 2024. This contributed to Vauxhall achieving an electric car sales mix of 25.2% in September.

Vauxhall’s van range also continues to perform strongly, with the brand second in the electric LCV market year-to-date and third in the overall LCV market.

James Taylor, Managing Director, Vauxhall, said:

“As the leading electric car brand among retail and Motability customers, the Corsa Electric and Mokka Electric continue to resonate with drivers across the UK. Our new pricing structure for the Corsa Electric and Astra Electric, alongside the introduction of models like the New Frontera - the first car to achieve electric and internal combustion engine price parity in the UK market - makes going electric even more affordable. Vauxhall is dedicated to making electric mobility accessible to all, with a fully electric version of every model in our line-up available by the end of the year.” For more information see www.ballyrobert.co.uk

Built to Last in Yorkshire

Winter weather can present unique challenges for drivers, from icy roads and reduced visibility to the increased risk of breakdowns.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable winter driving experience, it’s essential to prepare your vehicle and adopt safe driving practices. Good tyres are crucial for maintaining traction and control on winter roads. Consider investing in winter tyres, which offer superior grip on snow and ice compared to all-season tyres. Ensure your tyres have adequate tread depth; a minimum of 3mm is generally recommended for winter driving. Check your tyre pressure regularly, as cold weather can cause a slight drop. And finally, make sure your spare tyre is in good condition and properly inflated.

A clear windscreen is vital for safe driving in winter. Use the defroster on your car’s heater to quickly clear fog and condensation from your windscreen. Ensure proper ventilation in your car to prevent moisture buildup. Keep your windscreen wipers clean and in good condition. Avoid placing objects on your dashboard that could block air vents and hinder demisting. To stay safe on winter roads, plan ahead by checking weather forecasts and planning your route accordingly. Reduce your speed to maintain control on slippery roads. Increase following distance to give yourself time to react.

Drive in a lower gear to provide better traction on icy roads. Keep a winter

emergency kit in your car, including a blanket, food, water, flashlight, jumper cables, and a small shovel. And finally, stay informed by monitoring road conditions and traffic reports.

By following these guidelines and staying prepared, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable winter driving experience. Remember, safety should always be your top priority on the road.

Pre P are your P i P es for Winter!

With winter approaching, now is the perfect time to make sure that your home is prepared for winter.

To keep the water flowing in all homes, NI Water wants to remind customers to check their pipes are well insulated and stop valves are working.

Frozen pipes can burst and cause frightening flooding, so it is vital to take the time to make sure that any pipes are well protected from the cold weather too.

“Burst pipes can haunt any home and cause structural damage to a property, but the lasting damage in a home can be to personal items; furniture, electrical items and irreplaceable memories such as photographs. Insulating your pipework is an essential action to protect your water supply and that of your neighbours.”

There are lots of simple things that homes and businesses can do to prepare for the colder months, and there’s no time like the present to get started:

Stephanie McCullagh, NI Water’s Director of Customer Operations, said: ‘‘The last thing anyone wants this Halloween is for a scary burst pipe to appear. We are encouraging our customers to prepare for freezing temperatures by checking lagging is fitted and secured, knowing where your stop valve is and having the number of a plumber handy. All these actions will ensure that the water continues to flow freely through our pipes all winter long.

• Wrap up pipes and water tanks with lagging – high street DIY stores have everything you need to do this.

• Fix dripping taps –even a small trickle can result in a frozen pipe.

• Find your property’s stop tap and make sure you can turn it off – most are under the kitchen sink.

Post Xmas tasks for the garden

• Keep the name of a plumber handy – type in your postcode at www. watersafe.org.uk to find your nearest accredited plumbing business.

The festive season may (soon) be over, but your garden still needs some attention. A little effort now can make a big difference when spring arrives.

Start by clearing away any debris, such as fallen leaves and twigs. This not only improves the appearance of your garden but also helps prevent pests and diseases. Take down

any Christmas decorations and store them safely for next year.

Now is a good time to prune deciduous shrubs and trees. This encourages new growth in the spring.

Be sure to remove any faded flowers and seed heads from perennials to prevent self-seeding. To prepare your soil for spring planting, consider adding compost to improve fertility and drainage. You may also want to test your soil’s pH level and nutrient content to determine the best fertilizers and amendments to use.

If you haven’t already, plant spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths. You can also plant bare-root trees, shrubs, and roses while they are dormant.

Sla S h Your En E rg Y Bill S: Simpl E

St E p S for Big Saving S

With energy prices on the rise, it’s more important than ever to find ways to reduce your energy consumption and lower your bills.

Fortunately, there are many simple steps you can take to achieve significant savings.

One of the easiest ways to reduce your energy consumption is to simply turn off lights, appliances, and electronics when you’re not using them. Even leaving devices on standby can consume energy, so it’s important to power them down completely.

Another easy way to save energy is to lower your thermostat by a few degrees.

You may not even notice the difference in temperature, but it can make a big difference on your energy bill. Additionally, taking shorter showers can help reduce your water and energy usage. Investing in energy-efficient appliances can also help you save money in the long run. Look for models with high energy ratings, such as A+++. Additionally, a smart thermostat can help you control your heating remotely and

optimize energy usage.

To further improve your home’s energy efficiency, consider insulating your loft, walls, and floor.

Proper insulation can dramatically reduce heat loss, keeping your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Sealing up any gaps around doors, windows, and skirting boards can also help prevent heat loss.

Replacing traditional light bulbs with energy-efficient LED

Regularly maintaining your boiler is essential for efficient operation.

Schedule regular maintenance checks to ensure your boiler is running at peak performance.

To avoid estimated bills, it’s important to provide accurate meter readings to your energy supplier. Additionally, regularly comparing energy tariffs can help you find the best deal for your needs.

A guide to building an extension

Getting the planning and preparation right is vital when building an extension.

Building an extension can add extra space and value to your home. Whether you need a guest bedroom, bigger living room, or home office, an extension can transform your home. But, an extension needs careful and precise planning, preparation and execution. Where to start when building an extension?

Doing some initial planning will help your extension build go smoothly. Here’s a general checklist of things to do before building an extension:

1. Planning permission.

Because of permitted development rights, you won’t usually need planning

permission for single-storey or conservatory extensions.

However, whether you can build without planning permission depends on your property type, the build, and location. Check with your local planning authority if you’re unsure.

2. Building regulations.

All homeowners must comply with building regulations. These regulations outline the required standards for safety, structural integrity, insulation, fire safety, and accessibility. Hiring trades registered with a Competent Person Scheme means they can sign off on work to meet the regulations.

3. Lawful development . Even under Permitted Development, applying for a Lawful Development Certificate (LDC) can be a good idea. Getting an LDC confirms that the building and the construction work did not require planning permission.

4. Party wall agreement. Your home extension might involve building work near or on a wall shared with your neighbour’s property. In this case, you may need a party wall agreement.

5. Neighbours. Always consider your neighbours.

Even if you don’t need to worry about a party wall, it’s a good idea to inform your

neighbours of your plans and any future disruption.

6. Leasehold or freehold If you own the leasehold, not freehold, to your property, always check the lease

Speak with your freeholder before planning or designing an extension.

NI Water urges households to reconsider washing machine habits

NI Water is shining the spotlight on the results recently revealed in the Continuous Household Survey (CHS) to remind customers only washing full loads of washing in a washing machine is good for the environment and also good for your pocket. The CHS presented findings in relation to household water usage. The results show that 99% of households have a washing machine and, more than one in four (22%) use their washing machine every day.

NI Water Education Officer Anna Killen said:

“It’s amazing to think that on an average day, each person uses around 170 litres of water, yet only 4% is actually used for drinking. It’s important to create habits that will help us to reduce the water we are using in other ways, including washing our clothes.

“Clothes washing equates to a whopping 13% of our daily water usage. Washing
