Over the next two years, the complex, comprising three buildings: Townsend Street Church, a former school and a Memorial Hall in west Belfast, will undergo major works to reinstate deteriorated architectural features.
As well as providing a much-needed home for the Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra at Townsend restoration will also create a rehearsal and event space, a music learning and community engagement hub, a dedicated recording studio, additional rehearsal rooms, and spaces to rent.
Auveen Sands, Ulster Orchestra Chief Executive said: “Thanks to the generous support of the Foyle Foundation, National Lottery Heritage Fund, Ulster Garden Villages, Dormant Accounts Fund NI and the continued support of the Department for Communities, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council, the Ulster Orchestra is delighted to have taken ownership of the Townsend Street Church complex and is proud to call it our new,
permanent home.”
“Our key vision is to be a vital force in the cultural, social and educational life of Northern Ireland. We already work closely with many local communities through our learning and community education programme, but we want everyone to have access to our music and to deliver even more diverse and engaging activities. By having our own home, this is more achievable and an exciting opportunity to embed ourselves in the heart of the community.”

The first major multi-use health facility in inner-city Belfast has received planning approval.
Spearheaded by OCMC
Ltd and located on Great Victoria Street, the innovative Healthworks development will offer
Grade A health hub accommodation designed to meet the diverse needs of occupants, including GP practices, specialist occupational health services, and pharmacies.
Strategically positioned to serve the growing inner-city population from Weavers Court and other urban developments, Healthworks will also cater to the expanding corridor between Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University.
The development of Healthworks marks OCMC’s second significant investment in the burgeoning healthcare sector, following the successful acquisition of the Dataworks building within the King’s Hall Life Sciences Park, currently home to SpaMedica and Diaceutics plc.
Peter Keeling, Director at OCMC, said:
“Healthworks is designed to be one of the most affordable and accessible primary and specialist care centres in Northern Ireland. With planning approval now secured, we are eager to advance a
project that presents a major opportunity to enhance healthcare provision in Belfast.
“Our vision is to meet the evolving needs of a modern urban population by offering comprehensive healthcare services in a single, accessible location.
“We expect strong interest from potential occupants drawn to this innovative development.”
Belfast’s inner-city area has historically been underserved in terms of healthcare due to a lack of compliant spaces.
Compliance is a critical factor in modern healthcare delivery, ensuring that services meet rigorous standards for safety, quality,
and patient care.
Healthworks aims to fill this gap by providing healthcare providers with a modern facility that ensures adherence to all necessary compliance procedures, allowing them to deliver top-tier care in a state-ofthe-art environment.
With planning approval in place, letting agent CBRE NI anticipates significant interest from health-related occupiers.
James Turkington, Associate Director at CBRE NI, added:
“Healthworks represents a significant step towards the provision of a modern, purpose-built healthcare facility designed to cater to Belfast’s inner-city
population.
“The project’s location close to the city’s major transport hubs and the Weavers Cross development encompasses a wide catchment area which includes the city centre’s commercial and business core, as well as several Purpose-Built Student Housing schemes.
“As this exciting project moves to the next stages, we welcome inquiries from potential occupiers seeking to quickly establish a healthcare service in an area with significant footfall.”

“The Beautiful Game’s profile has been huge this summer spanning the Germany hosted main Euros to the U19s Euros held here in Northern Ireland, as well as soccer featuring in the Paris Olympics.
“We hope this will spur on CEOs and directors from companies across Northern Ireland to see the value in bringing their staff together to have fun and learn new skills whilst at the same time raising monies for local sport.
“So many of our athletes competing for Team GB and Team Ireland at this summer’s Olympic Games have been supported by the Mary Peters Trust, showcasing just how we can challenge and rival many of the world’s best in sport.”
Matches at the tournament will last 16 minutes (eight each side) leading to semi-finals and a Grand Final all managed using Futsal rules. Experienced volunteer referees will officiate, and First Aid together with a physio will be available if needed onsite.

The Special EU Programmes Body has announced almost £15m (€17.4m) of funding to Belfast City Council in the latest award through the €1.14bn PEACEPLUS Programme.
The funding will support Belfast City Council’s Action Plan, which aims to help build a compassionate, culturally vibrant and inclusive city.
The Council-led project will address the changing needs and diversity of the city, lead to greater inclusion and respect for members of marginalised communities, and increase opportunities for community engagement across different faiths, cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
Through the project, a total of 17,437 participants will actively participate in purposeful, meaningful and sustained contact with others from a different community, cultural or political background, thanks to the funding award. The project will be delivered over the next three and a half years with a total PEACEPLUS investment of €17,437,277.
PEACEPLUS is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) and represents a funding partnership between the European Union, the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Welcoming today’s announcement, First Minister Michelle O’Neill said: “I am delighted that The Executive Office is supporting this £15m investment in the Belfast City Council area through its PEACEPLUS CoDesigned Local Community Action Plan.
“This funding demonstrates a commitment to building a more peaceful, tolerant and cohesive society. By working collaboratively with local communities, the initiatives set out within the Plan will help address the area’s unique needs and
aspirations.
“This Plan represents a transformative opportunity to foster social harmony and sustain economic growth and prosperity. I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on residents across the city and beyond.”
This is the fourth funding announcement under the PEACEPLUS Co-designed Local Community PEACE Action Plans investment area, which supports projects developed and delivered by local councils in collaboration with their local communities. In March, Derry City and Strabane District Council and Cavan County Council received their awards, and
in May, Causeway Coast and Glens Council and Leitrim County Council were awarded funding, followed by Donegal County Council in June.
All local authorities within Northern Ireland and the border counties will receive PEACEPLUS funding. Each council must submit a programme of local investment aimed at addressing specific local challenges. The plan must be designed in collaboration with residents and organisations within their area, and address specific needs such as local regeneration, building positive relations, and celebrating identity and diversity.
Finance Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has visited the sites of two hotels that have benefitted from an investment fund managed on behalf of the Department.
The Aloft & Residence Inn by Marriott in Hamilton Dock and Room2 in Belfast have been supported by the NI Investment Fund, a £150million fund providing debt or equity finance for commercial property, regeneration and low carbon projects. The fund is managed by the CBRE Lending team on behalf of
the Department of Finance. The Aloft and Residence Inn by Marriott hotel, located at the Hamilton Dock site in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, received the NIIF’s largest loan, providing £28million in support.
Once completed, the 228room hotel/aparthotel will support 85 full time jobs Room2, which opened
in late 2023, secured £11.6million of support and is Belfast’s first Low Carbon Hometel running on 100% electric and low carbon renewable energy. It has a zero waste to landfill policy.
The Minister said: “A key target sector for this investment fund is the hotel and leisure industry and I was pleased to visit two of the hotel projects being supported in Belfast. As the number of visitors here increases, so does the demand for accommodation. The tourism industry is vital to the local economy helping to support jobs and services and boosting expenditure.
“Responsible and green investment is a priority and the fund supports carbon efficient occupational space and renewable energy generation. Both of the developments I visited today have strong environmental credentials, making them amongst the greenest hotels on the island.
“The Investment Fund is an innovative way of using financial transactions capital to invest in long-term transformation, supporting economic development growing the low carbon economy and tackling regional imbalance. I would encourage all project developers to check the fund’s criteria to see if they are eligible for support.”
Will Church, Executive Director, CBRE: “Impact Funds such as the NIIF aim to lend in circumstances where access to finance is the key barrier and when other lenders aren’t willing or able to, despite the underlying project being viable. We know how crucial the tourism industry is to the local economy in Belfast, however since the pandemic and with a backdrop of rising interest rates, debt liquidity and the viability of new hotel developments have become increasingly constrained. Both projects exemplify the purpose of the Fund, in facilitating strategic and locally important development projects that support job creation, regeneration, and a low carbon economy, as well as showcasing the opportunity that ex-
ists for local businesses with projects that meet the criteria.”
Oakland Holdings built the Room2 hotel on Queen Street in Belfast and Chief Executive Gareth Graham welcomed the Minister on site.
“We researched the hometel concept in other major cities and believed that there would be a local demand here in Belfast for this unique offering which combines the flexibility of home apartment living with the features of a hotel. Although the hometel only opened in October last year it is already a firm fixture in the Belfast hospitality scene and is regularly booked out. The Northern Investment Fund played a major role in delivering this project, as the key funding partner.”

While we are still enjoying the summer holidays, parents are already planning for back to school, including buying new school uniforms and other supplies.
It is an expensive time for families, but there may be help available with back to school costs.
Free school meals and school uniform grant
Education Minister Paul Givan has announced a short-term change to the eligibility criteria for families applying for free school meals and uniform grants.
To be eligible for free school meals and a uniform grant, households need to be in receipt of a qualifying benefit, such as Income Support, Tax Credits, or Universal Credit and have earnings
below a certain level.
For the academic year 2024-2025 the earnings threshold for households in receipt of Universal Credit has been raised from £14,000 to a maximum of £15,000. This is an interim rise pending completion of the ongoing review of the eligibility criteria for free school meals and uniform grants.
Transport costs to school
The Education Authority is required to provide transport to and from school for any pupils who meet specific criteria. Support is
made available where there is no suitable school within a legal walking or qualifying distance from the pupil’s home, or where the pupil has not secured a place in an appropriate school within that distance. A child with additional educational needs or disabilities may also receive assistance with transport.
How to apply
Free school meals and school uniform grant applications can be made online. Once submitted the application can take around four weeks to process. Home to school transport assistance applications can also be made online. The
Education Authority website provides an online Eligibility Checker to help parents find out if their child will qualify, prior to completing the formal application. For further information on free school meals, school uniform grants and home to school transport, including how to apply, visit the Education Authority website: www.eani.org.uk/ financial-help.
Help with childcare costs Many families still require ‘wraparound’ childcare during school term-time. Now is the time to find out what financial support is available - most working families
are entitled to help with their registered childcare costs, whether through Tax Credits, Childcare Vouchers, Universal Credit or Tax-Free Childcare.
Personalised advice and guidance
Employers For Childcare’s Family Benefits Advice Service provides free, impartial and confidential advice to parents on the financial support their family is entitled to and can help families work out if they are eligible for support with back to school costs. JV Allister writes about the much underestimated value of willow to wildlife and us all
Trees have always fascinated me, particularly because of their almost infinite variety, plus their value to us and the wildlife that evolved along with them.
There is one group of trees that are exemplars of variety, the willows. There are two main oak species native to Ireland and only one species of ash, but there are about seven willow species, plus umpteen introductions, hybrids and cultivars.
Their variety originally evolved from ancient climate and habitat change when they emerged as pioneer plants, which were among the first to colonise the bleak landscape after the last Ice age. The fact that they reproduce using feather-light seeds which disperse on the wind made them excellent colonisers.
They mostly inhabit damp ground and are often found along streams and rivers, where their roots stabilise the banks and create places for aquatic life, even for otters, to live and thrive, but some, as if copying their pioneer forebearers, grow prostrate in hollows on coastal mountains.
On the wildlife front, the
number of invertebrates they support has been estimated at up to a whopping 250 species. Moth and butterfly caterpillars feed on their leaves and are themselves food for birds, while bees feast on their pollen at a critical early part of the year, when other food is scarce. And they are not just of considerable value to wildlife, but to us. Cricket bats, anyone? Baskets?
Thatching? Even medicine: willow bark contains high quantities of Indole butyric acid which, as far back as the first century, has been used to treat pain, as well as salicin, an antiinflammatory which is used to create salicylic acid, a
key ingredient of modern aspirin.
Willow bark is also used to promote root development in plants, which of course is the basis for a particular willow trick: just push a live ‘sally’ stick two-thirds deep into soggy ground and it will most likely root and grow. And because of the ease of cultivation and their speed of growth, they are the basis for commercial biomass; remember the Renewable Heat Initiative (RHI)? They may be common and apparently unremarkable, but willows are among our most remarkable and important plants.

Seven years ago, the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) made its inaugural call out to aid 11 year old Conor from Castlewellan following a farming accident, and since then has been needed on over 4,300 occasions, averaging twice per day.
The unique partnership between Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the Charity Air Ambulance NI, operating 365 days a year, brings a transformative change with its combination of speed and medical expertise. Staffed by a consultant doctor and paramedic from NIAS, and supported by the charity providing the helicopter, pilot, and engineering services, the service has markedly enhanced emergency care.
NIAS Operational Lead for HEMS Glenn O’Rorke said, “Anyone could be a patient and need the air ambulance to fly to them. The crew is tasked to incidents including road traffic collisions, farm, sports or workplace incidents, accidents at home or serious medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest.”
One such patient is Damien Laverty from Carryduff Building Supplies who suffered a severe arm injury at work. The rapid response and advanced medical care provided by the HEMS team working alongside their NIAS road crew colleagues was crucial
in saving his arm and facilitating his recovery.
Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service worked to release Damien’s arm from the machinery and once freed, Damien was anaesthetised by the HEMS Doctor and transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.
Speaking about his experience, Damien said: “It has been a long journey to recovery, but I have made great progress. I owe so much to the air ambulance team, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and to the Royal Victoria Hospital for my initial care and treatment. I was at risk of losing my arm but thankfully it was saved and I am back to work. The air ambulance costs £6,850 per day to run so every penny really does go a long way to making sure that this vital service can continue.”
The service operates 365 days of the year for 12 hours per day and the aircraft can get to the furthest locations in NI from its airbase in Lisburn in approximately 25 minutes.
HEMS Clinical Lead, Doctor Darren Monaghan
added: “Damien’s positive outcome illustrates the benefit of emergency services working in partnership and the importance of the chain of survival for every critically injured patient. On scene, the Doctor Paramedic HEMS team can deliver additional interventions including advanced pain relief, sedation to allow manipulation of fractured limbs, Pre Hospital Blood transfusion and can deliver a Pre Hospital Anaesthetic. Our medical team are humbled daily to be able to ensure patients receive
optimal care before they reach hospital.”
Running at a cost of £6,850 per day, the service relies heavily on public donations to meet its annual £2.5 million funding requirement.
Breige Mulholland, Head of Operations and Finance at Air Ambulance NI, expressed gratitude for the community’s support and emphasized the importance of continued fundraising efforts, “We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to NIAS and the Department of Health for their
continued support. Each time the helicopter lifts off we are aware that someone is in great need and that, thanks to the generosity of people locally, the HEMS team can respond and give hope. We are truly grateful to everyone who has been able to support us over the past 7 years and ask for continued support.”
Supporters are encouraged to contribute through regular donations, participate in events, or volunteer. More information on how to get involved can be found at www. airambulanceni.org
Recently the Consumer Council released the latest Northern Ireland Household Expenditure Tracker for Quarter 1 2024 (January to March), which tracks changes to income and expenditure for households in Northern Ireland across four income groups (quartiles).
The Northern Ireland Household Expenditure Tracker found that Northern Ireland’s lowest earning households have seen their discretionary income fall by over 35% since the first quarter of 2021, leaving them with less than £42 per week on average after paying for essentials.
In Quarter 1 2024 (January to March), on average these households:
• spent 52% of their total basic spending on food, rent, energy, and transport
• have 7% less income before tax than the UK average
• saw their discretionary income rise 14% over the last quarter from £36.65 to £41.73 per week
• saw a rise of 2% in
income after tax
The ability of households in Northern Ireland to absorb unexpected bills or price rises differs sharply depending on household income. Northern Ireland’s highest earning households have on average almost 16 times more discretionary income left to spend every week compared to the lowest earning households.
Anne-Marie Murphy, Director of Strategy & Emerging Markets at the Consumer Council, said: “The lowest earning households have seen a small rise in discretionary income over the last quarter, but this is a decrease of over a third since the beginning of the cost of living crisis.
“Despite a small decrease in energy costs, food continues to form a disproportionate share of the lowest earning households’ spending, compared to higher earning households.
Food costs represent 22% of their weekly essential spending compared to 16% for the highest earning households.
“This expanded Household Expenditure
Tracker considers all Northern Ireland households and shows that half of those households have on average less than £93 per week after all essential bills are paid.
It is concerning how little money many families have left to cover unexpected bills or
price rises.
“Our latest research also shows that nearly two in five (39%) of Northern Ireland’s consumers feel that their personal finances have had a negative impact on their mental health.
“To help consumers, the Consumer Council offers a variety of support and advice including interactive tools to compare energy costs and advice on how to reduce your bills and make your money go further at www.consumercouncil. org.uk.”

The Northern Ireland Hotels Federation (NIHF) partnered with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to launch a ‘Choice for Children’ initiative that highlights the importance of healthy food choices for children when eating out.
The winner of the competition, which ran in spring, is The Merchant Hotel with the innovative dish, ‘Glenarm Organic Salmon, Armagh asparagus, spring greens and a pea sauce’. It contains glazed Glenarm Organic Salmon, free-range egg tagliatelle pasta (fresh and handmade), poached Armagh asparagus, cherry tomatoes, local peas and broad beans with a spring pea sauce.
In 2024, the FSA, along with local councils, published research into children’s menu offerings in restaurants, revealing a concerning lack of variety and healthy options. This research indicates a need to improve the nutritional quality of food available to children when eating out.
The dishes created by restaurants had to comply with the following criteria:
• Include at least one portion of vegetables/fruit.
• Should not be deep-fried.
• Have no added salt.
• Offer an alternative to chips such as boiled potatoes, rice, pasta, noodles, or bread.
• Be appropriately sized for a child.
• Include ingredients that are higher in fibre and contain less salt, sugar, and saturated fat.
Jennifer McGonagle, Senior Nutritionist at the FSA, welcomed the industry’s commitment to promoting diverse and nutritious children’s menus.
Jennifer added:
“We know from our recent research that restaurants are serving dishes to children that are extremely high in calories.
A staggering 80% of
the children’s meals we sampled contained over a third of the average energy requirement for a 6-yearold. Similarly, the recent Safefood campaign which aims to raise awareness of the food environment that surrounds us, highlighted that children in Northern Ireland can identify unhealthy food brands before they can say their ABCs.
“However, it was encouraging that 70% of the businesses we surveyed agreed the hospitality sector
has a role in improving children’s diets. It has been great to see the all the innovative menu options that were created through the Choice for Children initiative and we look forward to working with other businesses to increase the availability of healthy options on children’s menus.”
To join the conversation and support this initiative, use the hashtag #ChoiceForChildren on social media to raise awareness.
There are so many beautiful interiors out there, how on earth do you choose? The good news is that there are generally no right or wrong choices with interior design. Sure, there are some rules to guide you, but your home interior should be a reflection of the needs and likes of you and your family.
Step one – form and function. The first stage of planning your home interior is finding the balance between how you want your home to look and feel and what you need it to provide for you and your family. So, as well as thinking about how different home interior designs make you feel and which styles you’re drawn to, consider how you use the rooms in your home and what’s important to you. For example, if you enjoy hosting friends and family, it makes sense to design spaces that will easily accommodate visitors. If clutter makes you twitch, make storage a priority, and if self-care is important, why not create an indulgent spa
bathroom? Take the time to consider the history of your home and how this might impact your style choices. Edwardian house interior design ideas, with their large windows and wide hallways, will differ from those for a new build property, for example. One of the final points to bear in mind is flow.
Unless you’re designing a studio apartment, you’ll create a more cohesive feel in your home if you think about the flow from room to room when making your design choices.
Step two – room layout. First of all, consider the function of the room to give it a clear purpose. It’s entirely possible to use one room for more than one purpose, but aim to ‘zone’ the room into different areas when planning the layout. In addition to furniture and lighting ensure
there’s enough space to comfortably move around the room – ’empty’ space is key to help increase the feeling of spaciousness. Step three – colour
scheme. Now it’s time to add your personality to the space. With lots of inspiration out there, it can be hard to know how to narrow down
your choices. Start with a mood board. You can either do this the old-fashioned way, cutting out images from magazines, or use an app
such as Pinterest. Colourdrenching, neutrals, or feature walls; your mood board will help to steer you in the right direction. By putting together the
images you’re drawn to, you’ll begin to gather a clearer picture of the styles, features, and colours that you like.
Step four – lighting. Do not underestimate the importance of good lighting when planning your house interior ideas. Many experts agree that it’s best to have between five and seven different lighting sources in each room. For overall lighting (general lighting), consider recessed ceiling spotlights. For task lighting, you might opt for a desk lamp or a reading lamp by an armchair. Spot lighting can be used to illuminate items in a cabinet or a piece of wall art, whereas atmospheric lighting could be a dimmable lamp or some string lights. The right combination of these varieties of lights in a room will help to create
a warm, homely (and functional!) space. Always use a qualified electrician for your lighting installations. Step five – Finishing touches . Taking inspiration from your mood board, opt for accessories, decorative touches, soft furnishings, and artwork that align with the concepts you were drawn to, helping to add all-important accent colours. Remember to include mirrors and plants within your interior design ideas.
Hanging a mirror is not only a practical addition, but it opens up the room, creating the illusion of more space. Plants can bring energy and life to your design scheme alongside health benefits and a pop of colour too. For more information see https://www. checkatrade. com/blog/ideas/ interior-design-ideas/

Mowing is the key to a neat, healthy lawn. And it’s still an essential job the autumn months. The best way to encourage healthy, lush grass is by regularly mowing your lawn. Each cut helps keep a lawn neat and encourages denser turf. Mowing also blocks out weeds and makes the grass more hardwearing. During the growing season, mowing the lawn can take up quite a lot of time. That’s why it’s so important you know how
to cut grass the right way. In this post, we’ll guide you through how to mow a lawn and some useful grass cutting tips to make sure every last detail is covered. Read on for the best lawn mowing tips and tricks.
1. Get your mower serviced regularly. Getting your mower serviced at the start of every growing season
is important to ensure a clean, quality cut. Chipped or blunt blades will bruise the grass and cause a silver sheen or frayed look to the lawn. Also, don’t forget to clean out your mower regularly to avoid a build-up of clippings.
2. Know how often to mow. How often you mow depends on the style of lawn
you want, weather conditions and the speed your grass is growing. Here’s some grass cutting advice: The more frequently you mow, the denser your lawn will be In early spring, grass needs cutting less frequently as it grows more slowly at this time of year. Cut fortnightly until the weather warms up in late spring
Lawns need cutting weekly in late spring and summer. You may even need to mow twice weekly when growth rates peak in late spring If you mow less frequently you’ll break the ‘one third rule’ as you’ll have to cut off more than a third of the grass height to keep it looking neat . Milder winters mean lawns may benefit from occasional mowing between late autumn and early spring. Let your new lawn grow to 5cm (2in) tall before mowing for the first time. Choose the highest blade setting so the mower doesn’t get choked with clippings. If the grass is really long, you may need to strim it first dry shady areas under trees may need less frequent mowing than areas in full sun with good moisture levels 3. Get the grass height right. One of the key grass cutting tips to a lush lawn is knowing what height to leave the grass. Most lawn grass is best kept at 2.5cm – 4cm tall. Leave it a little longer in patches that get more wear and are heavily used, say 4cm – 5cm. In the shade, you could leave it still longer, at 7cm-8cm. 4. Adjust the cutting height.Cutting the grass at the correct height will help your lawn stay dense and healthy. To do this, you’ll need to adjust the mower’s cutting height to suit the weather and season. The mower should be on the highest setting for the year’s first cut. After that, aim to keep grass around 4cm tall in spring, autumn, and winter, and about 2.5cm in summer. If it’s a hot summer, it’s a good idea to raise the cutting height of your mower blades to leave the lawn longer. This will make it less prone to going brown in dry weather. The longer grass also retains extra moisture, helping to keep the lawn green and offering shade to the soil.
The opportunity to redesign your garden gives you the chance to create your dream outdoor space, complementing both your home decor and your personal style. But while garden redesign is an exciting project, it does require careful planning and consideration.
Before you launch your garden redesign project, it’s essential to spend some time planning the various elements!
1. Purpose and function. How do you want to use your garden? Do you want it to be a space for entertaining guests, a peaceful retreat, or a play area for the children? Answering these questions will help to shape the layout and the features that are important to include in your garden. For example: If you want your garden to be an entertaining space, consider where the dining area should be. This could be influenced by the position of the evening sun, making it an ideal spot for some outdoor furniture Perhaps you want to create an
outdoor kitchen or a BBQ area. If so, where would be the most convenient place to build it? Near the kitchen to avoid traipsing up and down the garden with plates of food, perhaps Want to enjoy a morning coffee in the sunshine?
Check the position of the morning sun and plan the optimal position for some garden seating
2. Site analysis. As with any renovation, it’s essential to spend time in the space to understand it better, noting: Where the sun hits your garden at different times of the day What type of soil you have and how well it drains Existing plants or structures you want to keep Whether there are any elements you can recycle or repurpose This will not only help when planning your layout and hard landscaping, but also the best type of plants to include too.
3. Budget If you’ve watched garden redesign programmes on TV, you’ll appreciate it’s possible to redesign your garden for
just a few hundred pounds or to ramp the budget up to tens of thousands of pounds. It’s therefore important to decide on
How to plan a kitchen layout. Aesthetics aside (for now!), let’s look at some of the key recommendations for planning a kitchen layout that’ll give you ultimate functionality.
The work triangle. This is perhaps the most important factor to consider in your kitchen layout. The ‘work triangle’ is the positioning of your oven, fridge, and sink, which are the three most commonly used items in the kitchen. It’s impractical and dangerous to carry pans of hot water the length of the kitchen to drain pasta or vegetables, for example.
As a general rule, aim for no more than a step and half in distance between the three points of your ‘work triangle’, i.e. your oven, fridge, and sink. It’s useful to have a work surface to put things on next to the fridge/freezer and the hob/oven (making sure the latter is heatproof).
Avoid positioning the oven right next to a wall or tall cupboard – it’s best to have some free space either side for comfortable working. Don’t forget electrical sockets. You want at least one double socket for every 1.5m of wall space, plus sockets at floor level for the vacuum, for example.
How will you use the space? There’s a reason why the kitchen is affectionately known as ‘the heart of the home’. People naturally gravitate to the kitchen and it can often be one of the busiest areas of the house. Avoid the daily chaos sweeping through the kitchen with some clever planning. Create a dedicated area before you enter the kitchen for items such as coats, shoes, and bags. This could be a bench and storage in a specific section of the kitchen, or a mudroom or utility if you have the space.
Perfect positioning. Make sure the primary passageway through the kitchen is unobstructed, i.e. that the oven or dishwasher doesn’t open into this space. Passageways need to be wide enough to stand and open the doors
your budget at the start of the project. Depending on what you want to include in your plans, this may need to cover hard landscaping materials, any labour costs, plants, and outdoor furniture.
4. Style and themes. With various different garden styles and themes, there’s limitless scope to create your ideal sanctuary. From contemporary to minimal-
ist, cottage to tropical, there’s a vast array of options to choose from. But how do you narrow your choices down? Create a mood board of gardens you’re drawn to, collecting ideas and design elements in one place. This helps to define your visual concept . Visit local gardens to identify plants you like, taking inspiration from their landscaping too
Look through gardening magazines to identify your favourite themes and styles Of course, you can also book a consultation with an experienced landscape gardener or garden designer to help plan your new outdoor space. For more guidance and inspiration see www.checkatrade.com/ blog/planning-guides/ redesign-garden/
of appliances. If planning a kitchen island, make sure it doesn’t block the area in front of your main appliances, leaving enough room to open the appliance doors and pass by. If work surfaces are opposite each other, plan enough space between them so that two people can work comfortably at the same time.
Kitchen designers will often place the sink first and design the rest of the kitchen layout from there. Whether it’s for food prep or clearing up, the sink is a well-used space within the kitchen.
The ideal spot? Place it with a view, either by a window, or facing into the room, on a
kitchen island, for example.
It’s generally more cost effective, and easier to install a proper ventilation system, if the oven is placed on an exterior wall.
Maximise the available space. When planning your kitchen layout, think about the storage you’ll need and where this will be. With some imagination and creativity, your kitchen walls can be cleverly transformed into a range of different storage solutions. Wall cabinets are a traditional solution for storing crockery and food, with glass-fronted cabinets for housing glassware.
Pantry storage is becoming increasingly popular to hide
away small appliances such as the coffee machine and toaster, baking accessories, and dry food items Open shelves, wall hooks, and overhead racks for saucepans can add to the kitchen’s overall aesthetic Need help visualising your plans? Hiring an experienced kitchen designer will make your life easier in planning your dream space.
A kitchen renovation project can range in price depending on the scope of the work, the complexity of the design, and the finishes you choose. A budget renovation could cost in the region of £6,000, while a fully bespoke kitchen could cost up to £35,000. It’s crucial to set a budget to keep your project on track. Make a list of everything you’ll need for your renovation:
Start from the top down, including lighting, paint, splashbacks, window dressings, cabinets and shelves, worktops, sink, taps, appliances, and flooring Include the cost of
labour for any items that’ll require it.

Wanting to incorporate wallpaper into your home but not sure how?
We’ve got some new and exciting ideas to inspire. If you’re embarking on a room renovation and want to add some colour, pattern or that extra wow-factor, wallpaper can do just that. With most elements of interiors, wallpaper trends come and go, but we’ve put together the top trends that should give you some food for thought when planning your next decorating project
Ombre wallpaper. A hot trend right now is ombre wallpaper. This started with an ombre painting technique that became extremely popular, however, it can be quite tricky to create. Opting for ombre wallpaper is a great alternative as it creates the same effect with less hassle and there is less technique required – you just need to make sure the sheets are lined up properly… maybe we’ve made that sound
easier than it actually is! If in doubt, find a local expert who will hang your wallpaper straight!
Botanical wallpaper. Bringing the outside in is a big part of how we choose to decorate nowadays. It is proven that incorporating plants and botanical elements in your home can uplift your mood and make you feel more connected and relaxed. Hanging botanical print wallpaper is an effective way of doing this. Botanical prints include banana leaf plants, dramatic florals and junglethemed designs. Go bold with a wallpaper mural. This is one solid design that fits over an entire wall. It definitely makes a statement and is for the brave decorators and homeowners amongst us. Popular mural designs include various landscapes, such as a mountain range, jungle or forest.
Monochrome wallpaper. Colour might not be your thing, and that’s fine, monochrome is definitely having a moment in 2024. A monochrome design could be spots, stripes, or a geometric pattern… the possibilities are endless. Monochrome wallpapers are a lovely option for a modern industrial home.
Large scale prints. When choosing your wallpaper design for your next decorating project, try to go for a large-scale print. Small, ditsy designs can be jarring for the eye and can look a bit muddled. Instead, large prints make a statement and create a more coherent look.
Striped wallpaper. Stripes never go out of fashion and 2024 is no exception. Incorporating striped wallpaper into your living room or bedroom scheme will look fun
and modern. We suggest keeping this to one wall because if you wallpapered the whole room it might be a little bit disorientating! 70s throwback.
The 70s are back! Retro wallpaper designs are definitely on the hot list right now. Rusty reds, mustards and navy blues are a true 70s colour
palette and look amazing printed onto wallpaper.
If you want to add a dose of retro charm to your home, then a 70s inspired wallpaper is a fantastic design decision.
Vintage Art Deco Wallpaper is a popular choice for vintage-inspired homes as it can easily transport you to a different
era. If this speaks to your interior style, choose designs with traditional Art Deco geometric shapes. Add that extra dose of glamour by picking a design that is embossed with gold detailing. Article used courtesy of https://www.checkatrade. com/blog/ideas/ wallpaper-ideas/
Getting the planning and preparation right is vital when building an extension.
Building an extension can add extra space and value to your home. Whether you need a guest bedroom, bigger living room, or home office, an extension can transform your home. But, an extension needs careful and precise planning, preparation and execution. Where to start when building an extension? Doing some initial planning will help your extension build go smoothly. Here’s a general checklist of things to do before building an extension:
1. Planning permission. Because of permitted development rights, you
won’t usually need planning permission for single-storey or conservatory extensions. However, whether you can build without planning permission depends on your property type, the build, and location. Check with your local planning authority if you’re unsure.
2. Building regulations.
All homeowners must comply with building regulations. These regulations outline the required standards for safety, structural integrity, insulation, fire safety, and accessibility. Hiring trades registered with a Competent Person
Scheme means they can sign off on work to meet the regulations.
3. Lawful development . Even under Permitted Development, applying for a Lawful Development Certificate (LDC) can be a good idea. Getting an LDC confirms that the building and the construction work did not require planning permission.
4. Party wall agreement. Your home extension might involve building work near or on a wall shared with your neighbour’s property. In this case, you may need a party wall agreement.
consider your neighbours.
Even if you don’t need to worry about a party wall, it’s a good idea to inform your
and any future disruption.
6. Leasehold or freehold If you own the leasehold, not freehold, to your property, always check the lease details. Speak with your freeholder before planning or designing an extension.
7. Home insurance. An extension will likely increase the rebuild cost of your home should the worst happen. Your home insurance provider may need to readjust your premiums. Always update your insurer about major home renovations to avoid a void policy and make sure you’re covered.
Project management. Before planning or designing an extension, consider who will manage the project. You can manage your extension build yourself or hire a professional project manager for a smoother process. Professionals who can help you manage your extension in part or fully include: Architects, Interior designers, Project managers and/or Extension builders

Autumn might be one of the most picturesque seasons of the year, but few will deny that the colder, darker and wetter weather makes it harder to stay motivated to exercise.
Exercising in this season can be somewhat daunting.
Dragging oneself from the comfort of their warm and comfortable bed to battle the elements during a morning run is the stuff of nightmares for many – however you can reap serious rewards when bracing the weather to get out and about this autumn season.
Seasonal adjustment disorder is but one condition that can be alleviated by regular exercise. Numerous studies have shown that incorporating exercise into your daily routine can boost one’s mood as well as decreasing stress, anxiety and
depression. So getting up and out will not only benefit your physically, but also mentally.
Changing up your routine is one way of
staying motivated to exercise this autumn.
Whilst going for a morning run might have seemed attractive when the weather was dry and warm,
the colder and wetter mornings might be better suited for an indoor swim. Perhaps joining a gym is the best way to stay fit over the winter, providing an indoor environment that can encourage exercise no matter the weather.
In the same way, mixing up your diet is important to staying healthy this autumn. Salads and fruit might have been the order of the day during the summer months, but your body will need more sustenance to fight off the flu and keep you warm during the winter season.
Mixing some soups, chowders and shakes into your diet can be a great way of diversifying your diet and making sure that you do not get bored eating the same old meals time and time again.
One benefit of the nights getting longer is that many find it significantly easier to get a long night sleep. As it gets dark earlier, it is often easier to get into a night time routine and securing those essential 8 hours rest per night – studies have found that those who get less than 6 hours sleep per night tend to have a higher than average BMI.

The UK has witnessed a meteoric rise in the popularity of food delivery services. Once a novelty, it has become an integral part of modern life, catering to a diverse range of consumers and lifestyles.
The Convenience Factor
One of the most significant benefits of food delivery is convenience. Gone are the days of queuing in restaurants or the hassle of cooking after a long day. With just a few taps on a smartphone, a vast array of cuisines can be delivered to your doorstep. This is particularly appealing to busy professionals, students, and families juggling hectic schedules.
Expanding Culinary Horizons
Food delivery services have democratised access to diverse cuisines. Whether you crave authentic Thai, spicy Indian, or classic Italian, there’s likely a restaurant delivering to your area. This culinary adventure without leaving home has broadened taste palettes and introduced people to new flavours.
Supporting Local Businesses
While global giants dominate the food delivery landscape, many smaller, independent restaurants have also benefited. These services provide a platform for local businesses to reach a wider customer base, helping them to compete with larger chains. Many operate their own in-house services.
Local entrepreneurs have also developed specialised localised delivery companies that partner with independent outlets to compete with the big boys and win!
Catering to Specific Dietary Needs
Time-Saving and Cost-Effective
For many, cooking a meal from scratch can be timeconsuming. Food delivery offers a timesaving alternative. Additionally, it can be more costeffective than dining out, especially when considering factors like transportation, parking, and potential service charges.
Food allergies and dietary restrictions can make dining out challenging. However, many food delivery services offer options for those with specific dietary needs, such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and halal. This inclusivity ensures that everyone can enjoy the convenience of food delivery.
The Future of Food Delivery
As technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more innovation in the food delivery sector. From drone delivery to hyper-local services, the future looks promising. While challenges such as sustainability and labour rights need to be addressed, the overall trend suggests that food delivery is here to stay and will continue to shape the way we eat.

As the summer months draw to a close, it is time to begin preparations to make your garden ready for the autumnal season. Whilst spring was the ideal time for planting new plants and summer the perfect time to watch them grow, autumn is a time that you will need to protect your garden.
The cooler weather and the increased amounts of rainfall will require certain measures to ensure that your garden is protected. It might seem simple, but many forget to move some of their vulnerable plants indoors as the cooler
weather begins to take hold. Either moving your potted plants and herbs indoors or into a dedicated greenhouse will give your plants to protection that they dearly need to continue growing for a longer period of time.
Throughout the summer period you will have had an abundance of seedlings fall all over your garden and it is important to apply weed killer at the beginning of autumn to stop these from
sprouting. It is of the utmost importance to keep your pets away from the garden if you put weed killer down as ingesting the poison can cause a great deal of harm to your animals.
As the days grow shorter, you will notice that the speed at which your garden grows will shorten considerably. This means that you will not have to cut your grass quite as often, however it is important to do so as
regularly as required in order to ensure that your grass stays full when it grows back in the spring. Similarly, it is important to keep your garden tidy and not allow leaves to build up as they begin to fall onto your property. Letting them build up over time will cause considerably more mess as they will begin to decompose and be harder to remove.
The slower growth provides the perfect
opportunity to tidy up your flower beds and displays. Whilst their vibrancy might begin to decline, the slower growth means that they will be more manageable.
It is important not to forget about your evergreens. Every garden shout have at least a few ever green plants to keep some life throughout the cold winter months. Whilst these plants are tough, it is important not to neglect them.

leaves can quickly clog gutters, leading to water damage. Clear them thoroughly to prevent blockages.
As the leaves begin to change colour and the days grow shorter, it’s time to turn your attention to preparing your home for the colder months ahead. Autumn is the ideal time to carry out essential maintenance tasks that will protect your property and save you money on energy bills. Here’s a checklist to get you started:
Exterior Maintenance
• Clear gutters and downpipes: Autumn
• Check roof for damage: Inspect your roof for missing tiles, damaged flashing, or signs of wear and tear. Address any issues promptly.
• Trim trees and shrubs: Remove overhanging branches that could damage your property during storms.
Interior Checks
• Boiler service: Schedule a professional boiler service before the heating season kicks in.
• Bleed radiators: Ensure efficient heating by bleeding your radiators to remove trapped air.
• Check for drafts: Seal any gaps around windows and doors to prevent heat loss.
• Insulate pipes: Protect external pipes and taps from freezing by wrapping them in insulation.
• Chimney sweep: If you have a fireplace, arrange for a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote.
• Ventilation: Maintain good ventilation to prevent damp and mould issues.
By taking the time to complete these autumn home maintenance tasks, you’ll not only protect your property but also create a warm and cosy environment for the winter months.
Looking for versatile cream living room ideas? If you’re a discerning designer (or want to be one), you know neutral tones offer the perfect canvas for creating tasteful and warm aesthetics
Cream living room ideas are upmarket and stylish when applied using the right techniques. For example, a balance of accessories, textures, accent colours, and plants will transform any space –taking it from drab to fab! Cream also lets you switch up your style whenever you want, making it a versatile base note for you to build upon. Whether it’s hygge or Scandi, minimalism or organic modern.
Embrace Scandi-style cream living room ideas. When Hygee meets Scandi, they create the ultimate comfort zone. With warm features, fluffy textures, and plenty of light, cream undertones create serenity and simplicity. For effortless luxury, keep the accessories and furniture in the realm of neutral decor. Examples such as the wood-weaved pendant light, slatted room divider, high-pile rug, and thick-
knit throw are nice ways to add class and warmth. Include plants in your cream living room décor. Cream is the perfect shade for bright and airy homes. So, why not extend the theme by introducing lots of lung-loving houseplants? With biophilic trends on the rise, it’s the perfect opportunity to turn your living room into a plant nursery. Furthermore, if you’re a city dweller living in an apartment, introducing a perennial or two to your decor is one of the best ways to improve your home’s air quality. Add a colour pop to your modern cream living room. Thankfully, there isn’t a colour known to humanity that doesn’t work well with cream. For an organic modern design, add some burnt orange, rich browns, and light-
toned woods to your decor. Organic modern design is all about layering neutral textiles and textures to create maximum interest. The aim is to create a polished yet casual atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease. What colour goes with a cream sofa in a living room? For those who’ve braved a cream sofa in their living room, accessorising it with the right colour is a matter of
preference. If your home is a sanctuary filled with all things muted and tranquil, keep your accessories on the same shade spectrum. However, if you’d like to add some boldness and fun, choose patterns for interest or a block colour for a two-toned effect. Whether you’re building a new conservatory or looking to give your current conservatory a little TLC, get inspired for your next project with a mix of these fun and unique ideas!
When it comes to conservatory ideas, it’s all about the ambience and elegance. How they look and feel is what makes them so popular. Not only are they cheaper than extensions, but they also add value to your home and connect you to your garden.
With the wide range of conservatories available, choosing the right one for your home can feel overwhelming. However, despite what the internet will have you believe, it requires only a few considerations.
Questions to ask yourself include: What square footage am I working with?
Which conservatory design will fit in with the style of my house?
How do I want to use my conservatory? (i.e. For dining, sunbathing, botany, or reading etc.)
Once you’ve answered these questions, it’s just a matter of choosing your design and deciding how best to decorate it.
Glass extensions
Glass extensions are a sleek and effortless way to upgrade your conservatory. Not only do they invite lots of light and warmth into your home, but they also work with almost any brickwork or cladding design.
Double glazing and integrated doors offer a seamless transition into your garden, while landscaping your outdoor space gives you something beautiful to look at on a rainy day.
An orangery
Bringing nature indoors with tall parlour palms and hanging baskets full of Mandevilla (‘Rocktrumpet’) is ideal. Better yet, if you’re opting for an
orangery, the world is your botanical oyster. For a fragrant oasis, attach Bougainvillea and Jasminum azoricum to trellises; decorate tables with Stephanotis floribunda-filled pots, and place giant Phoenix palms in lonely corners. Succulent popularity is spiking in the world of interior design. If you’re less green-fingered than the average gardener, having a selection of cacti displayed in terrariums, vases, and/ or refined concrete pots is a (literally) effortless way of modernising your space. A coloured conservatory
Have you been searching for conservatory colour ideas? Teal is a multifaceted colour available in a spectrum of shades – from pale celeste and aquamarine to rich evergreen and
ocean blue. Choosing the right shade for your conservatory is just a matter of light. The brighter the room, the darker you can get away with. That said, to maintain balance, we suggest you stick to the middle of the palette.
A contemporary dining area
A great way to utilise your modern conservatory is to turn it into a garden dining room. Think quintessential picnics with jute decor and polished brass place settings. You can either design a more formal dining area by sticking with a traditional dining
table and chairs or opt for something a little more sociable and choose benches and relaxed floor seating. Small conservatory ideas.
Stackable furniture. When it comes to decorating a small conservatory, maximising your space
and working with the light is essential.
Stackable rattan furniture is perfect for keeping things neat and compact.
Bring the outdoors in.
Bring nature inside with faux fur rugs, woven Scandinavian baskets and a hanging chair or two. They take up less space than sofas or tables and are great for unwinding after a long day.
A natural sanctuary.
Turning your small conservatory into a natural sanctuary is a great use of space. Conservatory ideas for small spaces include using slimline furniture and potted plants that work well together, leaving you to inject colour with accessories such as accent chairs, floor lamps, and cushions. Perfect for enjoying a Sunday afternoon reading or
When it comes to jobs around the home there are some things you shouldn’t try yourself, especially when 47% of Brits have had a DIY disaster*. Your unqualified hands could put you in a lot of danger, and worse, put others in danger. You could even invalidate your home insurance, which would leave you in a really difficult situation and with a heavy repair cost.
This list by no means covers everything, but it does answer the most common queries we get on whether to hire a pro or not for a job.
1) Fixing a gas leak. In fact, anything to do with gas. You must legally be on the Gas Safe Register to deal with any gas appliances. Attempting to fix anything gas related can have serious effects on your health and the safety of others around you, not to mention the potential of an explosion.
2) Removing asbestos. Asbestos is dangerous, so removing it is best left to the professionals. Asbestos comes with serious health risks. So much so that in 1999, the dangers of asbestos were officially recognised in the UK. All use of asbestos was banned. To have asbestos removed, you will need a qualified surveyor to carry out an inspection.
taking a restorative nap while rain patters on the rooftop.
Multifunctional furniture. Whether you turn your small conservatory into a kitchen, dining room, reading nook, home garden, or zen retreat, there are several spacesaving designs that can help make the most of your space. Think stackable coffee tables, fitted pantry shelves, L-shaped window benches, and foldaway furniture. Finish the look with decorative cushions, throws, and plants. Built-in storage and corner shelves keep your conservatory floor clutter-free and roomy. Pick a rug for the perfect finish and get ready to enjoy a minimalist environment!

3) Fitting a new bath. Whether you’re upgrading your entire bathroom, or you’re having issues with your current bathtub, you should definitely leave the installation of a new tub to a professional. Failure to do so could result in a leak in your home and a very unrelaxing soak in the tub!
4) Knocking down an internal wall. Knocking down an internal wall is a great way to open up your living space and create a freeflowing area to enjoy. But knocking down an internal wall is not a DIY job, so don’t start swinging your sledgehammer around. The wall could be loadbearing. If you attempt to knock down a loadbearing wall without any steel reinforcement, it will result in your ceilings falling through, and whatever is above it coming down too.
5) Foundation work. The foundations of any building are the most important part of the structure. If the foundations are wrong, then the subsoil can spread and the structure can settle unequally, leading to structural problems down the line.
Good foundations are a lot more than just digging a hole and pouring some concrete in, it needs to be exactly right.
6) Window installation. A poorly fitted window leads to lots of problems. These include: Injury to yourself, your family, and people passing by Reduced home efficiency (energy loss, draughts and leaks) Lack of security Legal and insurance ramifications Structural
surgeon will know exactly how to control the removal of your tree. They have the
issues and a poor finish (mould and mildew may appear) Avoid these risks and work with a professional window fitter.
7) Tree removal. Cutting down a tree is dangerous work. Although there’s a risk of falling from a height, there’s also the risk of being hit by debris. And even if the falling debris misses you, other people, houses and vehicles nearby may not be so lucky. A professional tree
experience, they have the tools, and they know how best to cut a tree of any
size. Even better, they will remove your tree much quicker than you would yourself.
8) Electrical work.
Electrical work, similar to gas work, requires a highly qualified professional to take on the job, due to safety reasons. Incorrect or unsafe wiring is dangerous. Not only is it a massive fire risk, but it could electrocute you, a member of your family, or guests.
9) Roof installation and repairs. Your roof protects you from the elements, but only if it has been installed or repaired correctly. Keeping it watertight and making sure there are no leaks is so important. A damaged roof can lead to lots of problems in your home, from damp, leaking ceilings to severe structural damage.
Patching it up yourself can be dangerous without the correct safety equipment. Getting up onto the roof is a risk to yourself. Then once you’re there there’s also the risk that you do not patch up the roof correctly, meaning the damage will worsen over time.
10) Pest infestations. Pest control specialists can have your home cleared of unwanted visitors quickly without you having to live in fear of living with whatever pest it may be. Prices usually start at around £120 to have mice and rats removed. Pest controllers can also remove bedbugs, cockroaches and ants.
