New Gateway to Choi C es servi C e helps Belfast people G et i N to work a N d trai N i NG

Looking for work, or a way to update your skills, can be a daunting experience, so Belfast City Council has launched a new Gateway to Choices service with the Belfast Labour Market Partnership to help residents take the next step in their employment journey.

Funded by the Department for Communities through Employability NI, Gateway to Choices (G2C) is all about supporting Belfast residents aged 18+ who aren’t currently

Crossing in student area improved

VivaCity, the transport technology scaleup transforming cities into smarter and more efficient places to live and work, has partnered with Infrastructure Northern Ireland to improve pedestrian and cyclist experiences and safety.

Infrastructure Northern Ireland has adopted five of VivaCity’s sensors, as well as three remote cameras, at the junction of University Street and Botanic Avenue. As this junction is surrounded by Belfast University buildings, many students use the pedestrian crossings during peak times. The VivaCity sensors replaced existing technology at this junction which could not count the number of pedestrians waiting at the crossings. This meant that pedestrian safety at the crossing couldn’t be assessed and improved effectively.

VivaCity’s sensors provide accurate and anonymous detection of pedestrians in the waiting and crossing zones at each crossing, which is then used to send a demand to the signal

controller in real time. The data insights that this provides empowers Infrastructure Northern Ireland to set a threshold number of pedestrians that must be present in the waiting areas to place such a demand. Prior to VivaCity’s technology, the junction also couldn’t detect cyclists approaching. Cyclists were therefore treated as any other road user, or not detected at all, and simply moved through the junction together with motorised traffic. In the same way as pedestrian detection, VivaCity sensors enable a detection zone that detects and counts the number of cyclists, which can be used to send a demand to the signal controller in real time to set a threshold number of cyclists.

RECORD ENGAGEMENT WITH VITAL WATER SAFETY CAMPAIGN

Belfast Based Organisation Sport NI has reported record engagement with the 2023 Get Wet Stay Safe Programme. Now in its second year, the scheme, which aims to raise awareness about

water safety, has seen 729* people participate in training sessions across NI since

May 2023, and over 1,300 since the campaign began.

The initiative is intended to raise awareness of the risks associated with any water-based activity, including the impact of coldwater shock. It also aims to communicate water safety messaging to StandUp Paddleboard users, Sit on Top Kayak users and open water swimmers across the country.

From May until the end of August this year, the scheme saw weekly training sessions held in every county across NI. Get Wet Stay Safe, which

is funded by SportNI, is part of a joint initiative with Swim Ireland, Swim Ulster, the RNLI, Irish Surfing, and the Outdoor Partnership, with marketing support from Outdoor Recreation NI.

Richard Archibald, Director of Sport at Sport NI says, “It has been brilliant to see the increase in people taking part in water sports across Northern Ireland. Water sports are a great way to stay active and being outdoors has many benefits for our mental health and wellbeing but open water also has significant risks.

“We want to ensure that

water sport is enjoyed but is done so safely. Over the past two years over 1,000 people have taken part in the Get Wet Stay Safe programme, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to enjoy their time on the water safely while being aware of the risks and what to do should a problem arise.”

The programme has seen a syllabus for training in StandUp Paddleboarding and Sit on Top Kayaking established through engagement between the head of paddle sport at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre and the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland. All of the tutors who deliver the programme are qualified paddle sport instructors.

Richard Timms, Open Water Swimming Development Officer at Swim Ulster, comments, “We are thrilled with the success of the Get Wet Stay Safe campaign to date. This unique initiative continues to educate on water safety, arming participants with essential skills and lifesaving knowledge.

“Distress calls and tragic swimming incidents have surged in recent years and this pioneering campaign

stands out as one of a kind, with our instructors teaching skills, such as knowing when you shouldn’t swim and what to expect from cold water shock. “Get Wet Stay Safe saves lives by fostering safer open water practices.” As part of the scheme, participants were asked to complete an Outcomes Based Accountability survey. Mental health support organisation chosen as one of Lord Mayor’s charities

A north Belfast charity which uses sport to raise awareness of mental health and promote positive mental fitness has been announced as one of the chosen charities of Belfast’s Lord Mayor.

TAMHI (Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues) works with sports clubs, schools and youth groups to make mental health fun and engaging.

The charity was set up in 2011 in memory of Thomas “Tammy Tucker” McLaughlin who took his own life in 2009. It delivers workshops, training, talks, games and other activities for grassroots community groups to help them connect with their members and support their mental health.

Lord Mayor Councillor Ryan Murphy said: “I am delighted to announce TAMHI as one of the charities I have chosen for my time in office. While they are based in north Belfast, they provide incredible support for young people and organisations right across the city and beyond.

“According to a recent report published by the Office of the Mental Health Champion,

45.2% of local 16-yearolds meet the criteria for mental ill-health.

It also revealed that the wellbeing of 11-year-olds has declined to its lowest level since 2016. The services that TAMHI and other similar organisations provide to build capacity amongst grassroots community organisations to support our young people is therefore crucial.

“TAMHI also does a lot of brilliant work to

champion good relations. So, as well as the work they do to address mental health issues, I’m delighted to show my support for the work they do to reduce division within the city.”

Speaking on behalf of the charity, Mickey Meehan from TAMHI said: “We have seen first-hand the impact of COVID and now a cost-of-living crisis on young people, and its heart-breaking. We echo the Mental

Health Champion’s call for full support of the NI Mental Health Strategy. We also commend the Lord Mayor for his focus on mental health and emotional wellbeing and choosing TAMHI as a partner this year to make a positive contribution to tackling mental health issues and promoting positive mindsets.”

Midland boxing refurb a knockout!

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Ryan Murphy, has toured the new look facilities and met with users of Midland Social and Recreation Association, following its recent £700,000 refurbishment.

The building, located in Tiger’s Bay, houses a range of clubs, including Midland Boxing Club, Midland Senior Citizens, the ‘Nifty 50s’ group and Midland Art Club.

Councillor Murphy joined young boxers at an early evening training session to present them with a certificate recognising their sporting achievements and view their revamped gym area, which has been extended to include a second ring, new female changing rooms and an improved layout.

He also met with older users to hear how the social space within the building has been redeveloped with new accessible toilets and access ramps through the refurb project, which was funded and delivered by Belfast City Council, with additional support from the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Outside, further funding from the National Lottery Spaces and Places Fund has been used to transform a former section of disused land into a bright new community garden.

Councillor Murphy said: “What a great hub this building is for the local community, bringing people together to enjoy sport, improve their physical and mental health, and get together with neighbours and friends for company and craic.

“This upgrade has created a bright, welcoming space with plenty of room to enjoy everything that is on offer,

Belfast City Council has been recognised by environmental charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful for its free reusable period products initiative.

The council won the Behaviour Change Award for its ‘impactful and pioneering’ pilot project which tackles single-use plastic.

The award category was open to all Northern Ireland councils to recognise commitment to changing behaviours and habits related to single-use plastic consumption.

as well as a new outdoor area which can be used all year round.

“The addition of a second boxing ring will allow the club to deliver more classes than ever before, while the new changing facilities will help encourage and make it easier for more women and girls to give boxing a go.”

Sam Cochrane, Chairperson of Midland Social and Recreational Association, said: “It was

great to welcome the Lord Mayor here to Midland and show him how this investment is already making a difference to our users of all ages.

“We know what our building means to those who come through our doors, and we want to take our club from strength to strength in attracting new members. These improved facilities give us the infrastructure to do just that.”

Chair of People and Communities Committee, Councillor Micky Murray said: “Introducing small positive changes to all aspects of our everyday lives with a focus on tackling environmental issues can have such a positive impact. The amount of plastic within single use period products is staggering.

This pilot project is such unique way of addressing an issue that I’m confident not many people knew about. Encouraging the use of reusable, nonplastic period products is helping provide a long-term solution to dealing with plastic contaminating our general waste.

“It’s fantastic to see Belfast City Council

recognised for implementing this scheme and leading from the front to normalise the use of reusable period products. I want to congratulate all of our staff for their efforts in making the scheme such a wonderful success.”

Chris Gourley, Waste and Pollutions Solutions Strategic Lead at Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful said: “The judges for this award were thoroughly impressed by the efficiency and thoughtfulness of this project, which not only tackles plastic waste but also addresses the pressing

issue of period poverty. The project not only demonstrates concern for the environment but also showcases the council’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and sustainability within the community. By offering free reusable period products, the council have provided a practical solution to reduce single-use plastic waste, helped to break down stigmas, and ensured that all individuals have access to essential products without compromising the environment.

“This project serves as

a model for other councils in Northern Ireland facing similar challenges, inspiring them to adopt sustainable practices and behavioural changes. Well done Belfast City Council”. Plastic pollution is a global concern that poses severe threats to ecosystems, marine wildlife, and human health. By implementing innovative solutions like providing free reusable period products, councils can actively contribute to the reduction of plastic waste and create a cleaner, healthier environment for generations to come.

Queen’s University shows support for breastfeeding mums

studying or visiting the university.

In joining this scheme, Queen’s has pledged that:

• breastfeeding is welcome across its campus;

• a mum who is

breastfeeding will not be asked to move or stop breastfeeding;

• all staff will be made

aware of the scheme and that the university is supportive of the needs of any breastfeeding mums;

• Queen’s will display the Breastfeeding Welcome Here window stickers and certificates throughout its campus.

Between 2010-2020 the initial rates of breastfeeding in Northern Ireland rose from 45% to 50%, however there is a big drop off, with only 21% of babies receiving breastmilk at six months old. Feedback indicates that this is often because there is lack of support, particularly when feeding outside of the home, with nine out of ten mothers stopping before they intended.

Dr Hannah McCourt, Senior Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement

Officer with PHA, said:

“The PHA is delighted to have Queen’s University as a member of the Breastfeeding Welcome Here scheme. We all have a role in supporting breastfeeding mums and creating a supportive environment makes continuing to breastfeed more likely. Breastfeeding mums have the right to feed anywhere in public. Thankfully it’s rare for a mum to experience any open confrontation or critical comment or behaviour about them breastfeeding in public that causes them to feel uneasy. Breastfeeding Welcome Here venues have shown a commitment to provide that extra bit of support and make it clear to everyone that they actively welcome

breastfeeding.”

Queen’s University Belfast has become the latest organisation to join the Public Health Agency’s (PHA) Breastfeeding Welcome Here scheme – a programme that aims to increase the number of premises which actively show support to breastfeeding mums. This new membership represents a huge support network to breastfeeding mums who are working,

Queen’s staff member Sorcha Mac Laimhin who is currently breastfeeding her second child, 6 months old Meadhbh, said: “I’m really pleased to see the Breastfeeding Welcome

Here scheme being launched at Queen’s. As a breastfeeding mother, it’s so important to be able to feed my baby anywhere I go and seeing the Breastfeeding Welcome

Here stickers around campus makes me feel even more confident to do so.

“I’m really proud to know that Queen’s are promoting the scheme and that they are going out of their way to encourage breastfeeding mothers to feel comfortable on campus.”

Dr McCourt concluded:

“Any business or organisation which is open to the general public is eligible to join the scheme, which currently includes over 800 cafes, restaurants, shops, council facilities, universities, tourist attractions and other public and private sector venues across Northern Ireland. Queen’s University joining the scheme is such a positive step for breastfeeding families. We believe that this will support and encourage breastfeeding mums to continue breastfeeding for longer.” For more information visit www. breastfedbabies.org which provides a list of local businesses across Northern Ireland participating in the scheme.

Extent of violence experienced by women and girls revealed in new reports

Almost 98% of women surveyed for a report into violence against women in Northern Ireland experienced at least one form of violence or abuse in their lifetime.

The report, ‘Every Voice Matters!’ Violence Against Women in Northern Ireland’, led by Ulster University, also reveals that seven out of 10 of those surveyed had experienced some form of violence or abuse in the last 12 months.

A second report, ‘It’s Just What Happens’: Girls’ and Young Women’s Views and Experiences of Violence in Northern Ireland’ was led by Queen’s University Belfast. It found that 73% of girls aged 1217 reported having experienced at least one form of violence in their lifetime.

Both reports were commissioned by The Executive Office.

Speaking at an event launching both reports recently, Head of the Civil Service Jayne Brady said: “These reports shine a light on the extensive nature of violence against women and girls and show too many lives have been blighted.

“They remind us all that the violence, harm and abuse inflicted on women and girls has far reaching repercussions, including significant impact on our men and young boys and that we all have a role to play in bringing about the change that is needed to improve the

lives of women and girls in our communities, our workplaces, in our sports clubs, schools, colleges, our streets and in our homes.”

The report, ‘Every Voice Matters!’ Violence Against Women in Northern Ireland’, was led by Dr Susan Lagdon, from Ulster University with findings of this report based on responses from 542 women. This report also found:

• Half of those (50%)

experienced at least one form of violence or abuse before they were 11 years old;

• The worst experience of violence or abuse was most commonly committed by a stranger (29%), however often the perpetrator was known to the victim (romantic partner 23%; friend or acquaintance 19%) and occurred in their own home (26%);

• Overall, only one third (33%) of the participants

felt able to speak about, or report, the violent incident that had occurred, with shame and embarrassment found to be the greatest barrier to reporting violent experiences.

The ‘It’s just what happens’: Girls’ and Young Women’s Views and Experiences of Violence in Northern Ireland’ report was led by Dr Siobhán McAlister from Queen’s University Belfast, with findings based on 268 girls and young women

across Northern Ireland who participated in the research.

The reports were commissioned to obtain reliable data and increase our understanding of the wider experience of violence against women and girls living in Northern Ireland. They are being used to inform the Strategic Framework to End Violence Against Women and Girls which is currently out to consultation.

Exercising in this season can be somewhat daunting. Dragging oneself from the comfort of their warm and comfortable bed to battle the elements during a morning run is the stuff of nightmares for many – however you can reap serious rewards when bracing the weather to get out and about this autumn season.

Seasonal adjustment disorder is but one condition that can be alleviated by regular exercise.

Numerous studies have shown that

incorporating exercise into your daily routine can boost one’s mood as well as decreasing stress, anxiety and depression. So getting up and out will not only benefit your physically, but also mentally. Changing up your routine is one way of staying motivated to exercise this autumn. Whilst going for a morning run might have seemed attractive when the weather was dry and warm, the colder and wetter mornings might be better suited for an indoor swim. Perhaps joining a

gym is the best way to stay fit over the winter, providing an indoor environment that can encourage exercise no matter the weather.

In the same way, mixing up your diet is important to staying healthy this autumn. Salads and fruit might have been the order of the day during the summer months, but your body will need more sustenance to fight off the flu and keep you warm during the winter season.

Mixing some soups, chowders and shakes into your diet can

be a great way of diversifying your diet and making sure that you do not get bored eating the same old meals time and time again.

One benefit of the nights getting longer is that many find it significantly easier to get a long night sleep. As it gets dark earlier, it is often easier to get into a night time routine and securing those essential 8 hours rest per night – studies have found that those who get less than 6 hours sleep per night tend to have a higher than average BMI.

NEW TAEKWON-DO CLASSES IN THE HEART OF BELFAST!

A very successful European Taekwon-Do Championships was held in June 2023. This major sporting event showcased Taekwon-Do in Northern Ireland and attracted competitors from all across Europe. The Open ITF Taekwon–Do Championships was also recently held in the National Badminton Centre (Lisburn Raquets Club).

Taekwon-Do has become the fastest growing Martial Art in Northern Ireland, as a sport it is graceful and powerful yet dynamic, exciting and fun. It is suitable for both males and females, children and adults from the age of 3 years upwards.

The UKTC (N.I.) offers a three tier system for students depending on age and ability, which presents a step-by-step approach to learning this particularly popular style of Martial Art.

To promote the advantages of TaekwonDo and sport in general to younger children, our ‘Little Tiger Cubs’ programme has been specifically designed to cater for children 3-5 years old. Its aim is to introduce basic martial arts skills through

a mixture of simple games, fitness drills, and Taekwon-Do training. This training programme aims to assist in the physical development, improved health, and increased fitness of each child. The programme will encourage the development of motor skills, balance, endurance, flexibility, strength, and the coordination of eye, hand and foot. Through this development, each student, junior and adult, should find greater self-confidence and self-esteem.

Our Little Tiger Cubs syllabus has a structured grading system to teach our young members that good attendance, good effort, and good behaviour will help them to achieve their goals in life. Our youngest members are awarded certificates, award stickers, and promotional badges to be worn on their suits. To check it out and get an idea of what we do, follow the link below.

http://www.uktc.co.uk/ LittleTigerCubs.aspx

For students aged 5-8 years we have ‘Active

Tigers’ which will allow students to develop their Taekwon-Do skills at a more relaxed pace while retaining some of the fun elements of’ Little Tiger Cubs’. It will also allow children to progress through the grading system in a more ‘Bite-sized’ fashion, while our more formal Taekwon-Do classes and the white suit which goes with it, is something for our younger students to aspire to.

In Northern Ireland the largest TaekwonDo group is Leo Maguire Taekwon-Do Schools. Leo Maguire, as the Northern Ireland National Coach and President of Northern Ireland ITF, he has brought the N.I. National Team to victory at both National, European and World levels. This level of expertise is now being passed on to the group’s current students as the fully qualified instructors are all national team members and dedicated to encouraging each child to achieve his or her full potential. For adults, our structured

training program offers fitness, friendship and self-defence.

Increase I n ch I ldcare support for those cla I m I ng u

n I

versal c red I t

Following an increase in the support available, Universal Credit may now be the best form of support with childcare costs for more families.

Most working parents are eligible for some form of support towards their childcare costs, yet many don’t realise this and are missing out on

the financial help that’s available. In particular, lots of families aren’t aware that they could be claiming Universal Credit or Tax-Free

Childcare, either of which could save them £1,000s on their childcare bill, depending on their situation.

Universal Credit –what has changed?

Universal Credit has increased the amount of registered childcare costs that can be included in the support it gives to families. Since this increase was implemented our Family Benefits Advisors have seen an increase in the number of families who are better off on Universal Credit compared to any of the other forms of support for registered childcare costs.

Through Universal Credit families can claim back up to 85% of their registered childcare costs. The mmaximum childcare costs allowed for Universal Credit are now:

• £1,118 per month for 1 child, parents can claim back £950.92 per month

• £1,917 per month for 2 or more children, parents can claim back £1,630.15 per month

This is a vital form of support for working parents who have seen their childcare bills significantly rise in recent years.

Universal Credit takes into account savings as well as household income, so not all families will be eligible. For those that aren’t, Tax-Free Childcare may be an option.

What is Tax-Free Childcare?

Through Tax-Free Childcare eligible working families can get 20% of their registered childcare costs paid by the Government, up to a maximum of £2,000 per year per child – or £500 each quarter. Families can save up to £10,000 per child per year through Tax-Free Childcare.

To be eligible, both parents need to be in employment or selfemployment (one parent in a single parent household), earning between £167 per week (equivalent to 16 hours working at the National Living Wage) and £100,000 per year each. Savings are not considered when determining if a parent is eligible for Tax-Free Childcare.

Ensure your family is accessing all the support you are entitled to We would encourage all parents to ensure they are receiving all the financial support they are entitled to with their childcare costs, and to check regularly that they are receiving the best form of support for them.

To find out more about what is the best form of financial support towards your childcare costs, contact Employers For Childcare’s Family Benefits Advice Service for free, impartial and confidential advice on Freephone 0800 028 3008 or email hello@ employersforchildcare. org.

Moy Park celebrates 80th anniversary with ‘ t his is h o M e’ charity initiative.

Ireland’s number one chicken brand Moy Park is celebrating 80 years of leading expertise with the finest quality produce and is launching a series of initiatives to support local communities in the areas where they operate.

To mark the company’s 80th year, Moy Park has revealed its ‘This is Home’ community initiative to reward 80 homegrown sports clubs, schools and local charities across Northern Ireland and GB.

Moy Park will support 20 grassroots sports clubs with bursaries and sports equipment, celebrating the best of its communities and local talent. In addition, 20 schools will be selected to receive a £500 bursary and 20 charities will be nominated to be surprised with £1000. A further 20 bursaries will be awarded to various organisations,

celebrating 20 more key moments in the year.

Moy Park’s success story began in 1943 in the village of Moy, County Tyrone and now the business spans 700 farms across NI and GB, with 12 production sites and 9,000 employees.

The first element of the ‘This is Home’ campaign will see Moy Park revisit some of the charities it has supported over the last 80 years. Employees in the company’s NI and GB sites are being asked to nominate 20 of the charities the company has supported throughout the last 80 years. The nominated charities will then be

announced in early September and will each be surprised with a £1,000 donation.

Brand Manager said:

“We are so proud to be celebrating our 80th anniversary and there’s no better way

to celebrate with the public than to support our local communities and charities, those we place at the heart of our

Celebrating Harvest Time

Harvest time is celebrated in many cultures around the world, and it has been a part of human history for thousands of years.

The harvest season marks the end of the growing season, when crops are harvested for food and animal feed. In ancient times, people relied on crops for survival, so the harvest was a time of great importance and celebration.

In the UK, the harvest festival is traditionally celebrated on the Sunday nearest the harvest moon, which is often between 21-23 September. The festival is also known as the harvest home and dates back to ancient Britain when people relied on crops for food. Farmers would give thanks for a good harvest, and communities would come together to celebrate with singing, drinking games, and much revelry!

The harvest festival is still celebrated in many churches and schools throughout the UK today. It’s a time to reflect on the food that we have and give thanks for it. The success of the annual harvest is dependent on a number of environmental factors, and the weather

plays a crucial role - too much or too little rain can spell problems, and in recent years heat waves and drought have caused serious issues for farmers.

Here are some ideas to explore for celebrating harvest: Harvest Festival Service: Many churches hold a special service to celebrate the harvest season. The service usually includes hymns, prayers, and readings, and often features

a display of fruits, vegetables, and other produce.

Harvest Supper: A harvest supper is a traditional way to celebrate the end of the harvest season. It’s a time to gather with friends and family and enjoy a meal together. The meal often includes seasonal produce such as pumpkins, squash, and apples.

Harvest Parade: A harvest parade is a fun way to celebrate the

season. Participants can dress up in costumes or decorate floats with fruits, vegetables, and other produce.

Harvest Crafts: Harvest crafts are a great way to get creative and celebrate the season. You can make wreaths, centrepieces, or other decorations using seasonal produce. Harvest Games: Harvest games are a fun way to celebrate the season. You can play games like apple bobbing or pumpkin

bowling. Harvest Feast: A harvest feast is a great way to celebrate the season with friends and family. You can prepare a meal using seasonal produce such as roasted root vegetables or pumpkin pie.

business.

“We’re thrilled to launch ‘This is Home’ and give back to those who’ve supported us throughout the past 80 years of success, as Moy Park has grown to be an integral part of many homes within our communities.

“It will be great to revisit some of the many charities we’ve supported over the years,

with many donations made to date towards a variety of very worthy causes.

“Having also just announced our new charity partnership with Sands, the UK’s leading pregnancy and baby loss charity, we’re delighted to have awarded them with the very first of our £1,000 to help support the amazing work they do. We are extremely honoured to

have our company-wide partnership with Sands.

“As well as our charity initiative, Moy Park will celebrate 80 years in lots of different ways, including a ‘Home Grown Farmers’ series which has started to play out on our website and social media platforms and our ‘Home for Dinner’ TV campaign due to launch in September, so keep your eyes peeled.”

Templemore Aquatic Sports Club and Templemore Swim School

Templemore Users Trust Ltd, a charity, ran the Baths on Templemore Avenue, Belfast since the early 1980’s. This was due to the Council wishing to close the Baths following their leisure developments at Avoniel and Maysfield.

The Trust had two objectives - saving the Baths from closure to allow future generations to enjoy the heritage; and, to teach as

many children and adults as possible, ensuring that this was community led and at community pricing. Following years of

lobbying Belfast City Council, it was finally agreed that the Baths would be included within the Leisure Transformation

Program (having not been on the agenda). Heritage Lottery came on board and between both organisations the funding was generated to carry out the significant renovations that have been carried out since 2020.

During the renovations we operated at Shankill Leisure Centre and, again, we thank our loyal members for maintaining their support during this time.

Going forward, Templemore Users Trust Ltd will operate as Templemore Aquatic Sports Club and Templemore Swim School.

Some exciting news!

Courtesy of funding from Parkinsons UK, on Wednesday evenings we now offer a 1 hour session with a coach and physio for those with Parkinsons Disease. We now provide our sessions in the ‘heritage pool’ from Monday to Saturday. We will continue to teach children and adults.

Lessons are from the age of 1, following our exciting partnership with Water Babies. We have recently partnered with Waterbabies to offer swim lessons for children aged 1 to 4 years.

Children will be taught right through to competition swimming should they wish. Our Swim Academy (for those that wish to keep fit but has more of a social side) is available from the age of 10. Junior Triathlon available from age 7. Throughout our various lessons and Clubs we will also teach life saving skills. In addition to our swim lessons program, we will also offer specific sessions for the community, families, adults and also for Templemore Triathlon Club. We also offer community swimming – with ladies only and men only sessions available. Become a member of our regular community swim program for £5 per year and you can swim in the heritage pool for only £2 per session

How to arrange your PERFECT living room

A living room is often said to be the heart of a family’s home.

As it is the room that pumps life into both your private and social life, many wish for it to feel and look as special as it possibly can be. However, achieving that perfect balance of comfort and aesthetic is no easy task. With that in mind, home furnishing experts Englanderline have provided some specialist tips around the topic of arranging your dream living room.

Think about your needs

Determine what furniture is best for you - Firstly, think about what furniture is best for you. Do you need cosy, modern living room furniture or would

you prefer something fun and vibrant? Preferences will inevitably change from family to family, but it is important to accommodate what you partly envision before anything else.

Consider spacingAccording to how big your living room space is, agree on whether you will need a big, small, or square couch in your living room. For example, if your room is large, it is obviously best to search for large living room ideas. What we ultimately learn from this is that spacing is imperative to your plan. There are two types of

spacing to be aware of: positive and negative. Positive spacing is where your furniture will go, whilst negative spacing is the empty space left in the room. Considering spacing is ultimately beneficial because it allows you to visualise what should go where.

How should you arrange your living room furniture?

Avoid facing everything towards a television - Try to avoid facing all your furniture towards the television. One way to do this is by arranging your seats in either a U-shape or an L-shape. These types

of arrangements work well for directing one’s eye to another prominent part of your room – a fireplace for instance.

Do not let technology dominate – As we live in the 21st century, technology is pretty much unavoidable everywhere we go. Most family living rooms tend to include a television or other technological devices.

The advice here is to include technological devices in your living room if that is what you want, but do not allow them to dominate your spacing. Instead, if you have the spacing to allow for it, arrange for some built-in shelves to put your devices on. Cabinets and sideboards –what to consider Grab your guests’ attention – Of course, we agree that comfort comes first. However, if you want to grab your guests’ attention from time to time, and you do not own the luxury

of a fireplace or another architecturally attractive feature, you can turn to custom-made cabinets or sideboards. Perhaps they can help to hold a collection of ornaments, or indeed any objects of personal importance. Either way, with them being there, you have added that little bit extra to your ideal living room.

Always consider measurements – Remember to bear in mind that if you are planning to add specific objects to your cabinet, you need to make sure that they will fit. Measuring said objects is a very simple step, but it is one that many people forget. Also, be sure to note the difference in height between the shelves of your cabinet. Do not worry about size proportion – Do not panic if you feel that the cabinet’s size is not proportionate to the rest of the room. Woodworks often tend to look bigger when they are empty.

Autumn A l Design t ren D s for Your Home

The nights grow longer, it is important to bring more vibrancy into your home. This renewal of colour can come in various forms, from repainting your walls to upgrading wallpaper and from upgrading your lighting to reupholstering your furniture, the options are vast.

Nothing adds colour quite like pillows. When strategically placed, these splashes of colour can add the vibrancy that your home needs. Whether you decide to include bold, block colours or opt for a more daring patterned design, these simple additions can transform your home and uplift the mood of everyone who visits. Choosing to bring some natural elements into your home can add both vibrancy and fragrance. Placing flowers and plants in your living space are shown to encourage good moods and can bring you up when the weather is getting you down.

The darker days and poorer weather leave

many of us feeling down. However it is important that when you are looking down, that bright colours cheer you up. A colourful throw or rug is the solution.

Strategically placing this next to a chair or coffee table can add a level of texture to your room that compliments other elements and bolsters the mood that you are trying

to generate through your design. Using a mirror in the correct way can generate an illusion of both increased space and colour. Choosing a mirror

with an interesting frame can add an element of colour itself, whilst the reflective properties of the mirror will leave the vibrant colours elsewhere in the room reinforced.

Latest Northern Ireland Childcare Survey now open –don’t miss this opportunity to have your voice heard

Leading childcare charity Employers For Childcare is asking all parents and childcare providers in Northern Ireland to take just a few minutes to share their experiences of using and providing childcare in the latest Northern Ireland Childcare Survey.

This survey is the most comprehensive ongoing research into childcare in Northern Ireland and will be critical in informing work on the new Childcare Strategy which is currently underway.

Marie Marin, Chief Executive of Employers For Childcare explains why it is vital that as many parents and childcare providers as possible complete this important survey:

“The new Childcare Strategy for Northern Ireland is currently in development and the findings of this survey will help to shape the direction of this longawaited and urgentlyneeded new childcare policy. What parents and childcare providers tell us through this research will be

used to help secure greater investment in our childcare sector, to support parents, children and childcare providers.

“We share the frustration of parents and childcare providers who feel they are being left further behind as a result of the everwidening gap between support for childcare here and elsewhere in the UK and Ireland. This is why it’s more important than ever to complete this year’s survey – to send a message to our politicians and policymakers that this is a critical economic and social issue that requires urgent attention. We need to present a strong voice for change and we need your help.”

What does active retirement mean to you?

Active retirement is a lifestyle that emphasizes staying physically and mentally active in the years after traditional retirement age.

It encourages individuals to engage in hobbies, participate in various activities, enroll in classes, contribute to a wider community through volunteering, and connect with like-minded individuals through social activities.

It is an opportunity for independent people with unique personalities to continue to grow skills, passions, and hobbies outside of the workforce— and with a renewed sense of purpose.

There are many hobbies that can be good options for the actively retired.

Here are some popular ones:

Walking in the countryside is one of the best retirement hobbies. Walking is a great way to keep fit in retirement, while exploring your surroundings, seeing some beautiful sights and taking on new challenges.

complete the survey have a chance to win one of two £50 shopping vouchers. The survey is available

now on the Employers For Childcare website www. employersforchildcare. org.

Gardening is fun when you enjoy being outdoors and love working with your hands. And it’s also a healthy hobby to have in retirement. You do a lot of spading, lifting, tilling, and raking, and that strengthens your muscles and keeps you more flexible. And also, gardening is a way of mindfulness.

Volunteering is good

for the soul, highly social and comes in a thousand forms. Work in a museum, and you’ll have daily opportunities to learn something new. Take part in a service role where you can help others. Or volunteer at an arts centre where you can have (often free) access to performances.

Golf can have a variety of physical and mental benefits for seniors, including improved cardiovascular fitness, increased strength and flexibility, and better balance and coordination.

It also encourages seniors to socialize, players usually stick with it and it improves concentration and quality of life.

Painting can be a really relaxing hobby, taking your mind off of other concerns as you get lost in the act of painting, concentrating on your subject matter and being creative.
