Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Michelle Kelly joined 36 community groups from across Belfast, recently, as they enjoyed a day out at Titanic Belfast and SS Nomadic, as part of Local Community Day.

Maritime Belfast Trust, the charity set up to preserve and promote Belfast’s maritime and industrial heritage, including the development of Titanic Belfast, worked in collaboration with Titanic Belfast to provide 500 complimentary tickets to the reimagined Titanic Experience.

The community groups came from Bloomfield Community Association, Sailortown Regeneration, Oldpark and Ardoyne Parent and Children Group, South Belfast Boat and Kayak Club, Ligoniel Healthy Living Centre, Colin Neighbourhood Partnership, Forward South, Extern and Belfast

City of Sanctuary. Kerrie Sweeney, Chief Executive of Maritime Belfast Trust said: “We have delivered six Local Community Day initiatives since 2016, welcoming over 3,000 people from 210 groups across the north, south, east and west of the city. The event sees the building opened up to a

2 Royal Avenue becomes a JAM card friendly venue

2 Royal Avenue, Belfast city centre’s cultural and civic space, is now a JAM card friendly venue.

By signing up to the NOW Group’s ‘Just a Minute’ (JAM) initiative, staff at the facility, owned by Belfast City Council, have received training to ensure they are equipped to provide excellent customer service to people with learning difficulties and communication barriers.

Signage has also been installed throughout the building to reassure JAM card carriers of a positive and welcoming experience.

The award-winning JAM scheme was created by participants with the Belfastbased NOW Group to allow people with a learning difficulty, autism or a communication barrier to tell others they need ‘just a minute’ discreetly and easily. Those with a communication barrier are often reluctant or unable to tell others about their condition but being a JAM card user or JAM card app user allows this to hap-

pen in a simple, effective, non-verbal manner.

The announcement follows several accessibility enhancements at 2 Royal Avenue – the former Tesco Metro premises - to support increased participation. The venue’s sensory area has also been recently upgraded with funding from the Department for Communities, enabling it to deliver a wider range of events for all ages and abilities.

“We are absolutely delighted to become a JAM Card friendly venue. Our staff are naturally patient and caring, but the training has really reminded us all of how important that is, “ said Lois Kennedy, Managing Director of MayWe Events, who manage the space.

2 Royal Avenue is the latest venue to join the NOW Group’s JAM initiative, with 135,000 users now carrying the card or using the app.

Ashley Johnston wins 2023 C iwe M Co M petition with Belf A st l ough s tudy

A NI Water employee has won the 2023 CIWEM New Members’ Paper Competition.

Ashley Johnston was announced as the winner for her presentation on ‘Finding Solutions for Belfast Lough’s Shellfish Water Protected Area’.

Ashley wins £250 and joins a select list of early career professionals to have won the competition.

Each year the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM)

NI Branch holds a competition for new student and graduate level members and CIWEM members with less than five years professional experience. The competition involved entry of a technical paper based on the theme of ‘Planning for

Recovery, Growth and the Environment’.

Ashley was delighted to win, explaining why she choose this topic:

“I was honoured to win this award for my paper. I chose the topic as it links into the work I am currently involved in for the Environmental Outcomes team as part of the Living With Water Programme. I really enjoy the work as it uses environmental modelling to try and find the best solutions for the environmental need that we are investigating.”

The Living With Water Programme seeks to revolutionise the way drainage and wastewater is managed in Northern Ireland by promoting

Belfast Local Development Plan formally adopted

Belfast City Council’s Local Development Plan Strategy has been agreed on 2 May 2023.

Since the transfer of planning powers in April 2015, Council has been routinely determining planning applications ranging from modest domestic extensions through to major redevelopment schemes based on the suite of policies and plans that were a legacy from the former Department of the Environment and the Department of Infrastructure (DfI).

The Planning Appeals Commission (PAC), in a September 2021 Independent Examination report to the DfI, concluded that Plan Strategy was ‘sound’, subject to some minor amendments. Following further engagement and consultation, Council received the DfI Direction to adopt the modified Plan Strategy in March 2023.

greener catchment based solutions, such as sustainable drainage systems and river floodplain restoration works alongside the more conventional hard-

engineered infrastructure, such as bigger pipes or higher flood defences.

Ashley is looking forward to continuing her research and career with NI Water.

Welcoming the news, Lord Mayor, Councillor Tina Black, said: “The adoption of the Belfast Local Development Plan – Plan Strategy is a significant milestone for Belfast as it represents an

important step towards the city formally setting out its own growth strategy and supporting planning policies which will help deliver the ambitions of our community plan, the Belfast Agenda.

“Our Plan Strategy sets out an ambitious but realistic vision for Belfast. The adopted strategy and supplementary documents

are now the main documents against which planning applications in Belfast will be assessed. These policies will support the delivery of housing and economic growth alongside measures to address climate change and biodiversity.”

The Belfast Local Development Plan – Plan Strategy and supporting

documentation along with supplementary planning guidance documents is available to view at the Planning Service reception during normal public opening hours in Cecil Ward Building, Linenhall Street. They will also be published from that date on www.belfastcity.gov.uk/ LDP

New service available i N b elfast o N board the a ctio N c a N cer b ig b us

Action Cancer is delighted to announce the introduction of a new skin cancer detection service, in partnership with the Department of Health.

Skin cancer incidence across the UK continues to increase with Northern Ireland having one of the highest incidences in the UK. Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer in Northern Ireland and melanoma which is associated with moles is the

fifth. In 2015 Action Cancer undertook some initial research into the possibility of delivering onboard its mobile clinic the Big Bus a free skin cancer detection service, a service provided by no other charity in the UK. The research indicated that conceptually such a service targeting hard to reach groups was of much merit but required a referral pathway into secondary care. In parallel, the former HSCB was designing and developing an IT / app-based photo triage pathway to be rolled out to GP practices across Northern Ireland. In 2022 agreement was reached to allow Action Cancer to also access and use the technology to refer clients with suspect lesions directly into secondary care.

With the skin cancer detection service onboard alongside the existing services of breast screening and health checks, the Big Bus is a truly unique vehicle with no similar vehicle operating anywhere else in Great Britain or Ireland. The charity’s aim is for it to visit annually up to 200 locations throughout Northern Ireland, with 80% of the visits being to areas of high deprivation where health inequalities are greatest.

The skin cancer detection service now available through Action Cancer offers another pathway for people concerned about a new or changing skin lesion. Delivered by a highly qualified and experienced nursing specialist team, the service offers a two-stage process.

Concerned members of the public, who meet the service eligibility criteria, are offered in the first instance a virtual assessment with a skin cancer specialist nurse. If the specialist nurse feels that further assessment is needed, then a face-toface appointment is offered on board an upcoming visit by the Big Bus; which visits all five HSC Trust areas across Northern Ireland twice every four weeks or at Action Cancer House in Belfast. Following the face-toface appointment, the charity then has the ability using the Department of Health recently developed dermatology photo triage referral pathway, to refer the individual directly to secondary care for further assessment.

If you are over the age of 18 and are concerned about a changing mole or lesion anywhere on your skin, please visit www. actioncancer.org to see if you meet the eligibility criteria to book a virtual assessment.

Maritime Belfast Trust is committed to developing Belfast’s waterfront as a place for everyone to enjoy, and is currently working with Belfast City Council, Belfast Harbour, Titanic Quarter Limited and key government departments to scope how the waterfront can fully realise its potential as a connected, vibrant corridor linking with key destinations, neighbourhood communities and the city centre. Local Community Day also provided an opportunity for the groups to contribute ideas to develop initiatives for the future of Belfast’s iconic waterfront.

Citi Belfast launched to help tackle unemployment

A new Business Services Employment Academy is set to help people who are currently unemployed, or working less than they’d wish, and will provide the potential to secure a job in Belfast’s growing professional and financial services sector.

The 10 to 12-week Belfast City Council and Citi Belfast academy will provide participants with a clear career pathway to working with Citi Belfast’s Markets Operations Team. Each person will be equipped with technical knowledge of the products, processes and functions involved in investment banking and receive mentoring support to develop employability skills whilst completing on-the-job learning. All participants are guaranteed an interview on completion of the academy for consideration for an entry level role.

Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Tina Black, commented: “Our new Business Services Academy in partnership with Citi Belfast is a fantastic opportunity for people to find out more about investment banking and the breadth and depth of roles available at Citi Belfast, based in Titanic Quarter. As well as developing technical knowledge, participants will develop their communication, IT, and

teamworking skills and given the opportunity to work shadow those already working in Citi’s Markets Operations Team.

“We made a commitment in the Belfast Agenda to help residents reach their full potential and to empower those furthest removed from the labour market to progress in employment.

We also want to support business growth and help Belfast employers with current recruitment challenges.

“If selected for the academy, participants will also receive employability support to prepare them for interview and aftercare for six months while in employment. And this really is an inclusive opportunity - as Citi says, you don’t need a degree, just a degree of enthusiasm!”

Funding for the academy has been provided by the Belfast City Council Labour Market Partnership (LMP), which is funded

by the Department for Communities.

To find out more about the job roles and training on offer, pop into one of three drop-in information sessions on Tuesday 18 April (10am-11am, 2pm-3pm or 6pm-7pm) at the Maldron Hotel, 20 Brunswick Street, Belfast, BT2 7GE.

Pamela was one of 40 teaching professionals ‘honoured for their contributions to the education of young people’ to have been recognised for their ‘outstanding contribution to education’.

The Blackboard Awards celebrate the teaching staff at both primary and post-primary level who have ‘worked tirelessly to support the academic development of their pupils and help inspire future

generations’. This year over 150 nominations made 2023 a record year for entries!

In the short time we have all worked together the team have dedication to ensuring the highest learning outcomes for all pupils. I have a dedicated team of classroom assistants who go above and beyond in so many ways and I was thrilled that Mrs Jennings was recognised at the Families First Awards this year.

Pamela points out that

this year is a very exciting time for the school –highlighting the significant refurbishments that are underway. She says: “No fewer than 10 classrooms have recently been repainted and fitted with new Interactive whiteboards. We have a fully refurbished room dedicated to learning through play. We have also created a brand-new forest trail and picnic area at the rear of the school, for pupils to enjoy the outdoors and this will also help us deliver our forest schools’ programme. We are so lucky to be supported by several local community groups to develop this further. We have also upgraded lighting, access and fencing along with

many other improvements. The 2 full-time classes in our Nursery Unit are completely full, with more enquiries all the time. Our numbers are increasing throughout the school, and the addition of an extra Speech and Language class has strengthened our specialist provision. At a recent visit by the ETI we were described as ‘a truly inclusive school.’

Our pupils had the amazing experience of putting on ‘Peter PanThe Musical’ at Belvoir Players Studio Theatre and we couldn’t be prouder of them. All children from P5-7 were involved and the children were truly professional! The show was outstanding thanks to the staff who worked tirelessly

to put on this production. Check out the show on our website!

This year we will host our second girls’ football tournament with the support of the Irish FA, with girls attending from 30 different schools. It has grown significantly from last year when we received our quality silver mark through the IFA last year. I never set out to lead a school. All I wanted to do was make a difference. I was so fortunate to have teachers who helped me believe that you can achieve things beyond your wildest dreams as long as you believe in yourself. I look forward to watching the school grow and develop throughout my time here and beyond.”

Smoby Chefs House serves up hours of fun!

Our roving reporter reviews the latest child development toys

Over the years as a parent to three little girls it has become abundantly clear how important role play is in child development. We have filled our home with toys that let our children reenact what they see in the world around them.

Whether they are vacuuming, playing dress up or having an ice cream shop the girls are constantly playing make believe. With that in mind the most recent addition to our home is the Smoby Chef’s House and I can honestly say it has already accumulated hours of endless fun with all the girls who are aged from six right down to one.

Whenever we visit friend’s houses with toy kitchens my children will make me endless cups of tea and elaborate meals with a bizarre mixture of food. With each other, they now have their own play dates in their own little kitchen making all sorts of delightful treats

and serving their make believe customers.

The chefs house is by far the most detailed toy kitchen I have ever seen, and certainly that I have ever created a review for.

It is designed to act like a café to serve customers with an oven, hob, sink and tap, till and card payment machine. There are lots of accessories so kids can re-enact the whole restaurant experience.

As with all large toys like this there is a fair bit of set up – and I would be lying if I said it was easy.

Initially I had intended to set it up myself. I am a strong independent woman– how hard can it be? I was quickly proved wrong, and my other half joined me in tackling the set-up.

It wasn’t particularly difficult to set-up, but it was time consuming. If you are buying the Chefs House as a Christmas present or birthday present I would strong recommend setting it up

A new er A for Li S burn He A ring Centre

Lisburn Hearing Centre is under new management as Scottish audiologist, Colin I’Anson, has bought the business from founder and owner, David Parkinson.

David founded Lisburn Hearing in 2006, and the business has served the local community ever since.

New owner, Colin, qualified as a hearing aid audiologist in 2007 and has 16 years of experience working at House of Hearing in Edinburgh specialising in the fitting of bespoke hearing solutions and wax removal. Colin moved to Lisburn with his family in the summer of 2022 and began working part-time at Lisburn Hearing shortly after he arrived.

Colin said:

the night before, because I would have hated to be trying to get it all sorted with the kids getting twitchy next to me and touching all of the bits.

The Chefs House is currently sitting in our kitchen waiting for the warm weather to move in and once that happens it will take its place on our decking. I have no doubt it will provide endless

hours of fun in the sun this Summer and for many years ahead for our little clan.

So far our experience with the kitchen has been a positive one, and the girls have really enjoyed playing in it. I’m excited to see how their modes of play with it change as they grow and mature. For more models check out their range at www. smoby.com

“It’s been great to be made to feel so welcome and to get to meet so many people here in Lisburn. I was immediately impressed by the friendly professionalism of the team at Lisburn Hearing and really enjoyed the interaction with the customers. Being an audiologist is very rewarding as you get to meet so many people and you can make such a big difference to people’s hearing and quality of life.”

Colin took over Lisburn Hearing on 4th April and

has no immediate plans to make major changes.

“It’s really exciting to be taking over such a well established and customer focussed business. I’m delighted that David has agreed to remain working on a part-time basis to assist us in a smooth transition, ensuring Lisburn Hearing customers and families always continue to receive a first class service from us. The company has been here in Lisburn providing

a valuable service through thick and thin, throughout the pandemic, despite the arrival of large chains. Providing a personal and consistent service continues to be our priority and this will continue to set us apart in the future.”

What do you call a flock of warblers? A chorus? Or a warble?

Over centuries people have given names, sometimes called collective nouns, to groups or flocks of birds.

A murder of crows.

A gaggle of geese. A charm of goldfinches (my favourite). But the question I ask about warblers is a wee bit tongue in cheek because we seldom see them in flocks. Yes, they must ‘flock together’ to some extent when they fly here every spring from southern Europe or Africa and return in late summer, but, at least while they’re here to breed, they live separate, territorial lives. There are many warbler species, but I’m only going to cover the three most common, those you’re most likely to hear, chiffchaff, willow warbler and blackcap. And when I say ‘hear’ rather than ‘see’, that’s because they’re very good at not being seen. They’re small, and particularly chiffchaff and willow warbler plumage is a mix of muted green, brown and yellow, enough to fade into the foliage of the woodland where they live. Even blackcaps, which, yes, do have a black cap (females

have a brown one) are hard to spot.

But their songs and calls are, for me, the essential sounds of spring when trees are in leaf. Of course, I love the songs of robins, blackbirds and thrushes, often performed where we can see them, but warblers are something else, their songs and calls echoing through woodland and waterside scrub as they

Hay Fever – W H at y ou S H ould Kno W

As the warm weather begins to return and the summer holidays come evercloser, it is easy to neglect the potential problems that come about at this time of the year.

Unlike the common cold, hay fever will not pass after a number of weeks and if left untreated, can remain an issue for a matter of months. Hay fever is usually made worse between late March and September, especially when the weather is warm, humid and windy. This is when the pollen count is at its highest.

Symptoms of hay fever can include sneezing, coughing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy, red or watery eyes, headaches and tiredness. It is particularly dangerous for those who suffer from asthma, as the combination can result in difficulty breathing and shortness of breath.

proclaim their territory and seek females to join them.

I particularly love the chiffchaff song, even if it’s just pretty much a repetition of its name… chiffchaff, chiffchaff… because it carries such a long way. The willow warbler’s song is much more ‘musical’, a trilling descent, repeated over and over. But the star

is the blackcap, with a melodious song which is the reason for its alternative name, the nightingale of the north. If you want to listen to their songs, they are available at https:// www.british-birdsongs. uk/alphabetical/. Better still, get out into the countryside this spring and listen to them ‘live’.

JVA

Unfortunately, there is no cure for hay fever and it cannot be prevented, however with the right approach the symptoms can be considerably eased. Simple measures such as avoiding grassy areas, showering after you have been outside, keeping

windows closed and not drying clothes outside can reduce the amount of pollen being inhaled. For more serious cases, antihistamines and cromoglycates can be taken to prevent an allergic reaction from occurring. Hay fever symptoms are much likely to be worse if the pollen count is particularly high. The pollen count refers to the number of grains of pollen in one cubic meter of air. A low

pollen count would consist of less than 30 grains of pollen in every cubic meter of air whereas a very high pollen count would be 150 grains.

In the majority of cases, symptoms of hay fever only begin when the pollen count is over 50. The pollen count is usually given as part of the weather forecast throughout the summer and spring months.

Most cases of hay fever

can be treated with overthe-counter medication or simply avoiding areas which contain high pollen counts. It is advised the one should only visit their GP when symptoms cannot be controlled after using over-the-counter medication or if you’re suffering from persistent implications of hay fever such as tightness of chest or a worsening of existing conditions such as asthma.

Tax-Free Childcare can help working parents pay for registered childcare

Paying for childcare can be a significant expense for working parents.

with a disability, from the Government.

For many families, it can be more than the monthly mortgage or rent. However, most working parents are entitled to financial support towards registered childcare costs, even though many do not realise this.

Tax-Free Childcare is one of the forms of support available to help pay for registered childcare. While uptake of the scheme has previously been low in Northern Ireland, this is now growing and over the last year 30% more families have benefited from using Tax-Free Childcare.

While a positive development, there are

many more families who are still missing out on support they could be entitled to. Often, parents assume they are not entitled to financial support because they think their household earnings are too high, however this is usually not the case.

What is Tax-Free Childcare?

The Tax-Free Childcare scheme is open to parents of children under the age of 12 (or age 17 for children with disabilities) allowing eligible working families to claim 20% of their registered childcare costs, up to £2,000 per child per year, or £4,000 for a child

To claim Tax-Free Childcare, both parents need to be in employment (or one person in a single parent household), earning between £167 per week (equivalent to 16 hours working at the National Living Wage) and £100,000 per year each. So, for example, a household where each parent is earning £95,000 (combined income of £190,000) would be eligible for support.

Tax-Free Childcare is also available to self-employed parents (where eligible). Households where one parent is working, and the other parent is in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or certain disability benefits can also qualify.

Unlike some other forms of support the amount of

savings a household has is not taken into account when determining if a parent is eligible for Tax-Free Childcare.

Further information

As well as Tax-Free Childcare, there are other schemes which provide support with registered childcare costs (Universal Credit, Childcare Vouchers and Tax Credits), which may be better for some families.

Our team can help parents work out what form of financial support is best for them. The exhibition was formally opened to the public on Wednesday, 3rd of May.

Museum Board chairman Rev. Mervyn Gibson said: “We are delighted to have this wonderful exhibition at Schomberg House and I am sure it will be of interest to a great many people.

Curator of the Museum of Orange Heritage Dr. Jonathan Mattison added: “This is a fascinating period of history with many

significant events taking place that would shape the future not only in the British Isles, but ultimately in places like the United States of America.

CHARITY CALLS ON PEOPLE TO HELP SAVE NATIVE FLORA

Plant conservation charity, True Harvest Seeds, is calling on people to donate to help raise the £200k needed by August 31st 2023 to save its seed bank. Situated in Kilclief, the new structure will be purpose built to preserve the seed of the island of Ireland’s native flora in the event of de-habitation or climate change.

There are hundreds of native flowers and plants

in NI and ROI and the seed bank exists both to preserve them and to research their DNA. It is currently situated within a set of temporary structures that are reaching the end of their lifespan.

True Harvest Seeds

wishes to secure the future of the seed bank. To do so, the charity must raise funds by August 31st for a permanent structure to house its growing indigenous seed collection. The organisation also wishes to further develop

its native botanical gardens, to protect and showcase endangered and beautiful flora.

Debbie Gillies, CEO at True Harvest Seeds, says, “True Harvest Seeds is essentially a gene bank for our indigenous wild plants. We harness the science of seed conservation to safeguard our native species for future generations.

“We preserve seeds collected from populations of wild plants of native origin in our seed bank and it is of the utmost importance that we are able to secure a permanent, purpose-built structure, to allow us to continue our work safely and effectively for the long term.

“The Seed Centre will be open to the public and the seeds in the seed bank can be withdrawn for restoration or research upon application. As a

charity, True Harvest Seeds and its seed bank are owned by the people of NI and ROI for use now and long into the future, as seed collections can last for thousands of years in deep storage.

“I would encourage donations from people across County Antrim to help us raise the £200k that is urgently needed in order to secure the site by August 31st.”

Debbie is accompanied by one other member of staff at True Harvest Seeds, along with seventeen dedicated volunteers who help with all aspects, from governance, to collecting, to growing and storing the seed.

Michael Thompson, Trustee and Marketing Director at True Harvest Seeds, adds, “Conserving endangered plant species is vital to the preservation of our ecosystems. Many plant

species are currently facing extinction, both locally and globally, and it is vital for us to help protect them before it is too late.

“One of the ways that we aim to achieve this at True Harvest Seeds is by seed banking and our members

are working tirelessly to raise money to build the necessary infrastructure to continue our efforts.

“We need to raise £200k by August 31st to secure a permanent building for our seed bank and I would call on people across County

Antrim to help us protect our indigenous plants from genetic degradation, hybridisation or extinction by donating.”

Expert reveals how to dress as a wedding guest without upstaging and upsetting the bride

The unwritten rules of attending a wedding are generally easy to achieve, with minimal effort: always RSVP, do not bring extra guests, make sure to be on time and most important of all… do not upstage the bride.

Fashion experts at Karen Millen have revealed top tips on ensuring you dress to impress without stealing the limelight from a bride at her wedding. Whether you are the mother of the bride or groom, in the bridal party, or just attending as a plus one, these tips are the perfect guide on how to dress appropriately with style.

Does the bride have preferences?

The first place to start when beginning to look for a wedding guest outfit is to establish if there is a theme or colour scheme the bride wants guests to stick to. If there is, you are one step closer to finding the perfect dress, and if the bride has not suggested which colours to look for, then politely ask if there are any colours she might want you to avoid wearing. If you let the bride guide you, you will find something perfect.

What colours to avoid:

You want to make sure the dress you choose compliments the style or colour scheme of the wedding, which will probably be common knowledge if you are in the bridal party. Still, if not, there are a few colours that will undoubtedly take away the limelight of the bride unless she has specifically asked you to choose these

colours:

• Red: Visually, red is a bold and flashy colour that will immediately draw attention to you, whether that be in person or photographs; if guests surround you in neutrals and a bride in white, you may feel out of place with the tone of the wedding.

• Black: Many brides and grooms opt for a black and white-themed wedding which is perfect if that is the desired look, but wearing a black dress to a neutral wedding would be a bold choice. Black also absorbs heat and will cause you to get hotter faster, so if the location is on the beach or in a warmer season, you probably want to go for a lighter option.

• White: It might be obvious to some but wearing white to a wedding is best to be left to the bride to avoid any upset. Unless the bride gives the go-ahead to wear white or ivory-like colours try options in other light colours, such as pistachio greens and baby pinks. What colours work well?

The main goal for a wedding guest is to blend in, but this does not mean your outfit has to be dull and drab. The best way to choose what colour dress to wear is to find out what is complimentary to both the

wedding and you. By doing this, you will find something you feel confident in and not take anything away from the bride.

Light neutral colours and pastel shades are a go-to as this keeps the aesthetic light and airy and allows guests to experiment with various shades and hues. Having guests in different pastels or neutrals also turns out great in photographs with a wide range of tones bringing the bright white or ivory of the bride’s dress to light.

Jewel tones and earth tones are also fantastic options for guests who have been allowed to wear darker colours but still want to inject some colour. What silhouettes work well?

Choosing the right dress for your body type can be difficult, especially if you do not like to experiment or try different silhouettes. The best way to learn how to compliment your figure and find something you feel confident in is to try on as many different styles of dresses as possible.

It is also important to remember that even though a particular style or silhouette is in fashion now, it does not mean that it is right for the theme or tone of the wedding.

Final tips to remember when choosing the right dress:

Extravagant dresses, headpieces and trains are a no-go – Let the bride’s dress do all the talking.

• If in doubt, aim for neutrals and pastels – The perfect way to blend in and still look elegant.

• Avoid being too casual –Being too casual will have the same impact as wearing something over the top; nothing should take away from the bride.

• Dress to impress in comfort - Do not forget you will be in this dress for hours, so make sure the dress is flirty, comfortable, versatile and vivacious; you will be wearing this dress all day.

New look 2023 Mazda2 makes Spring debut

The ever-popular Mazda2 has received a substantially revised new look with fresh exterior styling and new cabin trim treatment.

Across the four newly named trim grades: Centre-Line, Homura, Exclusive-Line and Homura Aka - the 2023 Mazda2 features a new grille, a sleeker bumper design, decorative dash panels and two exterior colours that make their Mazda debut on the supermini: Aero Grey and Air Stream Blue.

For the 2023 Mazda2, Mazda’s designers have focused on new design features that give the different models a more distinctive appearance to allow customers the opportunity to reflect their individuality with a wider choice of colour combinations across the four model grades. The Mazda2’s personality has been redefined with Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line focusing on a fun and casual nature, while the Homura and Homura Aka have

been designed to give the Mazda2 a sportier look and character.

Across all models the 2023 Mazda2’s new grille sees the signature Mazda wing surround pass beneath rather than below the number plate, leaving space to accentuate the new sportier lower bumper trim and shape. Additionally, to give a sharper look, the signature wing grille surround cuts into the leading edge of the headlight rather than passing underneath, while asymmetrically placed colour accent tabs feature on the front grille and rear bumper across all models.

The Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line have a front-end design that features a large coloured panel across the lower section of the grille, which combined with the

new front bumper design and more prominent lower grille section with a gloss black signature wing surround, gives the 2023 Mazda2 an unmistakable new look. With the aim of giving customers more colour combination choices, on Soul Red Crystal, Snowflake White, Platinum Quartz, Polymetal Grey and the new Air Stream Blue the grille panel is body coloured, while on Machine Grey, Deep Crystal Blue, Ceramic Metallic and the new Aero Grey colour, the grille panel is in Jet Black to give a smart contrasting look. Jet Black cars also have a Jet Black grille panel. All Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line cars feature a small yellow accent tab in the grille, something that’s repeated at the back where the

revised rear bumper features a now full width black lower moulding with the yellow accent tab. Centre-Line cars feature 15-inch silver alloy wheels as standard, while Exclusive-Line steps up to 16-inch bright alloy wheels. Inside, the Centre-

Line and Exclusive-Line cars there’s a similar colour combination style with a new decorative dash panel that is mint coloured on Air Stream Blue and Ceramic Metallic cars for example. On Soul Red Crystal, Snowflake White, Platinum Quartz

5 Tips on Crea T ing a Wildlife f riendly g arden

Some people spend a lot of money trying to keep wild animals out of their gardens, but I actually prefer attracting more wildlife to mine.

If you enjoy seeing birds and other animals meandering about your garden spot, then you might find these tips useful. Here are 5 tips on creating a wildlife friendly garden.

Make a pond

Ponds are fabulous for growing exotic water plants, but they are also perfect for attracting

cute little frogs. I love hearing the small frogs chirp in the evening as they call to one another from the water’s edge. Birds also like being able to get a fresh drink from time to time.

Plant catnip

My cats adore their bush of catnip. These plants may start out fairly small, but they grow into

massive, bushy plants that cats like to hide in and nibble on. The bushes tend to keep the cats’ attention so they don’t notice the tiny birds flitting about the garden plants.

Grow some sunflowers

Larger seed-eating birds seem to enjoy the giant sunflowers I plant every year. They will sit on the giant heads and happily

peck at the seeds in each one. This is a full-time job for these birds. Any seeds that fall to the ground are picked up by squirrels and chipmunks.

Put a birdbath in the centre

Not only do birds enjoy the birdbath in the centre of my flower garden, but I’ve even caught the cats taking a sip or two while

they are outside playing in the yard. I change the water in the afternoon and at the end of the day, so the birds will have a fresh supply of water.

Add bushes for small animals to hide in Sparrows will sit and chatter to one another

for hours on end and there’s nothing cuter than an evergreen bush filled with these talkative little birds. The bush doesn’t necessarily have to be of the evergreen variety, since most little birds are happy to perch in any type of bush.

Home Interior Summer colour trends for 2023

The colour palette got even larger lately with leading paint Manfacturer Farrow & Ball alone introducing 11 new colours recently ( the first alteration to their collection since 2018.) There is a move towards bold and brash colours that lend themselves to exaggerated statements and also an array of neutral and natural tones that embody a sense of calm and containment.

Here are just a few ideas to get you in the summer mood!

Deep reds

In 2023, reds are rich and pigmented, Graham and Brown also chose a moody and romantic red as their colour of the year. When decorating with red, consider how susceptible the colour can be to natural light. The colour takes on slightly different tones throughout the day and the seasons. It can be vibrant and fresh in the morning, cosy and rich in the evening

The new plaster pink

We’re seeing a resurgence in the

popularity of raw plaster, and with that has come a demand for a finish that mimics the appearance of fresh plaster. Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster launched a thousand Instagram posts in 2022 their newer Templeton Pink is a deeper and richer take.

Pink may divide opinion; however, over the past few years, this versatile shade has boomed in popularity. Pink provides a more elegant, more playful alternative to grey, it creates incredible warmth and an alluring appeal and looks fab in kitchens!

Wheat field neutrals

Whilst there is still more than a hint of a Scandinavian colour palette here, wheat field neutrals introduce undertones of yellow and gold that add considerable warmth. Dulux’s Wild

Wonder is a natureinspired update on the theme.

Make your Summer Shine!

Bring the Outdoors Inside

Nothing says summer like lush green trees and blooming flowers. To bring your home into harmony with the summer interior design trends in 2023, try decorating with tall, standing house plants, like a monstera or a snake plant. These sturdy house plants are like living art, adding a vibrant pop of color to any room. If you don’t have a green thumb, try to use realistic-looking fake plants. That way, you can feel like you have a little piece of a garden in your home, yet never worry about forgetting to water the plants. Now that the trees outside have fully bloomed again, why obstruct your view of nature’s beauty?

Wonder walls. Pair it with Yellow and golds to warm up this new neutral backdrop – and sofas and footstools can really make a statement in your living space in brighter accent

Create an Outdoor Meditation Room

Meditation is a way to quiet your thoughts to tap into the creative force in your life.

It can refresh the mind, lift the spirits and help you feel more connected. Meditation can be as simple as sitting in a chair and quietly praying, or it can be as disciplined as Zen practices. However you meditate, having a space that’s set aside for that purpose is helpful. Given good weather, a place outside can be ideal.

Find a quiet area that will allow you to feel peaceful and calm. A shady space is advisable. Before you do anything with the space, sit in it and check out how it looks, sounds and feels. You want it to be out of the wind and quiet. If you like the space but find it a bit noisy, consider placing plants around it to help block out the sounds

or playing soft music. A water feature can create soothing white noise.

Define the area with a comfortable outdoor chair where you can read before praying, a woven mat where you can sit while you meditate or stretch when you’re finished, inspirational statuary, lanterns if you like to meditate in the evening and a small storage chest

where you can keep pillows to support your back, a blanket and your books. Arrange these items in a harmonious way with your plants and water feature. Choose colours that will enhance your meditation. Soothing, cool colours such as light blues, greens and greys can ease you into meditation. Use these colours in

shades. Alternatively, you can easily start to layer in this colour with smaller accessories, such as cushions and throws, adding hints of yellow to your existing interiors.

If you’re lucky enough to get sunlight shining through a window in your kitchen, consider the summer a perfect opportunity to grow a window sill herb garden! Nothing represents the ideal intersection of function and style better than a decoration that you can also add to your lunch. No matter what the season, one thing is for sure: plants will never go out of style.

Metallics Shine

brass, gold, and rose gold. When it comes to metallic accents, get creative. Think candleholders, picture frames, lampshades, decorative bowls, plant pots – let it all shine! As you apply these metallic summer interior design trends, feel free to mix and match different tones. For example, if your kitchen is already loaded with your favourite stainless steel appliances, try matching that cool-toned silver with a warmer bronze colour for your dishes, silverware, sink hardware, wine rack, or cabinet door handles.

If your home is sporting that classic all-white look, make it modern with the summer interior design trends of 2023 –add bright bronze or rose gold accents, breathing new life into a tired, monochromatic room.

some metallic paint and get busy painting your existing candle holders, plant pots, picture frames, and other decors.

Bold Patterns

Whether it’s florals or animal prints, the right pattern can change the ambiance of a room.

Think boldly, and consider options like a two-tone geometric rug, or an up-close print of a flower. When in doubt, larger scale prints beat smaller ones – opt for a pillow cushion with a handful of palm trees and pineapples decorating the surface, rather than a granny chic print of tiny daisies.

your fabrics and accents. If you have a favourite item or picture that you use during your practice, put it in a prominent spot.

Who doesn’t love a bit of glitz and glam?

In minimalist interiors, the right choice of bold patterns can elevate your style while reserving an elegant simplicity. If you’re up for the challenge, you might even consider using mixed patterns in similar colour palettes – perhaps a tropical print could match a thin, subtle striped print. You’ll never know until you try it out!
