Tesco says thank you after reaching 220 million meals milestone

Belfast people who have helped to alleviate poverty and reduce food waste have been thanked by Tesco as part of special landmark celebrations.

The supermarket chain has reached the milestone of donating 220 million meals to those in need through its Community Food Connection programme with the food charity FareShare.

To commemorate the occasion, Tesco is paying tribute to the volunteers, community groups and Tesco colleagues who have contributed to the success of the partnership.

Over the years, the partnership has seen Northern Ireland donate 2,464,757.85 meals.

Matthew Barnes, UK CEO of Tesco, said: “Tesco is immensely proud of its partnership with FareShare and the fantastic achievement of donating 220 million meals over the last 12 years.

“None of this could have been done without the passion, determination and drive of the countless people in places such as Belfast who have contributed to it, and it is to them today that we say a big thank you.

“But the hard work doesn’t stop here. While this is a momentous milestone, we remain committed to partnering with FareShare as we work towards our goal of halving food waste and getting more good food to people.”

One of the groups that has benefited from the Community Food Connection scheme is the Redeemer Central Church, which has been actively involved in the campaign for the past two years.

In response to the cost-ofliving crisis, the Redeemer Central team set up The Long Table, a project that offers a free, nutritious meal for 40 to 50 people every Friday from 6 to 7pm right in the centre of Belfast.

The meal is prepared by volunteers using food collected from Tesco via the FareShare Go programme and additional surplus food is made available to people to take home.

The food we receive through working with FareShare and Tesco helps us achieve this.”

Now in its 12th year, Tesco’s partnership with FareShare sees surplus food from Tesco stores and distribution centres donated to FareShare’s network of charities, community groups and food banks, bringing people together to help

Stephanie Wilson of Redeemer Central Church said: “There’s always room for one more at The Long Table. Every Friday we welcome a mix of people, including those who are homeless, asylum seekers, refugees and also people from the local community who are really lonely and up against it. As a church, our heart is to welcome everyone and create a safe space for them to enjoy food and community.

alleviate poverty and reduce food waste.

George Wright, CEO of FareShare, said: “FareShare has worked with Tesco since 2012 to help alleviate poverty in the UK by ensuring surplus food within its supply chain is used to feed people and doesn’t end up as waste.

Quite simply, FareShare could not do what we do without Tesco’s incredible support.

“The milestone of 220 million meals donated is a testament to all those involved in our partnership with Tesco. These 220 million meals have supported causes across the UK, from local community groups, charities and food banks helping those who need it most.”

As visitors continue to flock to the Belfast Region this autumn, behind the scenes, significant progress is being made on transformative tourism and regeneration projects that will attract new tourists to the region who stay longer and spend more.

Over £60m of Belfast Region City Deal (BRCD) investment has been unlocked for three significant tourism projects with the signing of Contracts for Funding for The Gobbins Phase 2, The Mourne Mountains Gateway Project, and Destination Royal Hillsborough. The Belfast Region City Deal has committed £210m in total towards seven key tourism and regeneration projects which will secure investment of around £350 million across the region. Contracts for Funding have now been agreed for six of these projects, with the last Contract for Funding for Belfast Stories expected in summer 2025.

Following confirmation of a £30m Belfast Region City Deal Contract for Funding by the Department for the Economy, an expert integrated consultancy team led by ARUP and made up of TODD Architects, Gleeds, and Tandem Design has been appointed to deliver the Mourne Mountains Gateway Project visitor experience. The project will deliver a worldclass visitor centre at the Thomas Quarry site in the Mourne Mountains, and a gondola experience, which will improve accessibility, allowing people to travel sustainably and efficiently from Donard Park to the visitor centre. The design team’s combined wealth of knowledge and expertise will help deliver an inclusive, exemplary project that respects and complements the Mourne Mountains’ natural beauty.

Delivery of Phase II of The Gobbins has

also taken a major step forward with the Contract for Funding being signed for £12.6m BRCD investment in a series of exciting upgrades for one of Northern Ireland’s most popular Causeway Coastal Route visitor attractions.

Hood McGowan Kirk have been appointed as the design team to progress the ambitious plans which include a spectacular ingress structure standing in excess of 60m tall, a state-of-the-art virtual reality experience, upgrades to the clifftop path, the development of a new Welcome Hub, and improved visitor features.

Carrickfergus will also benefit from a £26.4m BRCD investment, enhancing its historical appeal, boosting economic growth, and

Harland & Wolff r evives i ts r ail W ay Heritage

The Downpatrick and County Down Railway has partnered with the legendary Belfast shipbuilders Harland & Wolff, to help restore a unique Victorian railway carriage.

The project to recreate this unique railway carriage will serve as a pivotal training opportunity for Harland & Wolff apprentices, immersing them in heritage skills essential to fabrication and engineering, but also revives a long connection between the shipbuilder and Northern Ireland’s railways.

In the 1930s Harland and Wolff diversified their manufacturing expertise beyond shipbuilding to produce diesel locomotives that were used locally at Downpatrick and Ballynahinch, and as far afield as Canada, and this rich legacy is now being revitalised with the first railway vehicle to be built by the shipyard since the Second World War.

Built in 1862, carriage

No. 33 is the sole survivor from Northern Ireland’s first railway company –the Ulster Railway – and is only one of a handful of Irish railway carriages to survive from the dawn of the railway era into modern times. As such, the carriage is actually closer in age to Stephenson’s Rocket than it is to most other railway vehicles in Northern Ireland’s railway museums.

The Ulster Railway was formed in 1836 and operated out of Great Victoria Street to Portadown and Armagh, later becoming the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) operating to Dublin. It is poignant that this vehicle’s restoration coincides with rail services on its former home at Great Victoria Street site recently ending in May 2024.

“We are thrilled to partner with Harland & Wolff on this historic project,” said Robert Gardiner, Chairman of the Downpatrick & County Down Railway.

“Their enthusiasm for the project to recreate this Victorian gem has completely knocked us over, and is wonderful against the backdrop of our recovery from the devastating floods in November 2023, it is truly appreciated.”

He continues, “Their passion and expertise are invaluable in the restoration of the Ulster Railway No. 33. This collaboration not only honours our shared industrial heritage but also provides an excellent training ground for apprentices to learn and master heritage crafts.” No. 33 was a first

class “family saloon” with two large firstclass compartments that were separated by a pair of lavatories. Wealthy families would hire these luxurious compartments for themselves for a day’s travel, which like Titanic kept them apart from Third Class travellers. The carriage was retired from railway service in 1920 and the body was removed from its wheels and used as a railway office, and later a farm shed, until it was saved by the DCDR in 1987.

In addition to severe wood rot and structural problems, a major barrier to restoration was the prior removal of the chassis - or underframe - in the 1920s. However, a century later, the recreation of this underframe now serves as a major educational

tool, marking a major milestone in the heritage railway sector in Northern Ireland.

The development of the design has followed best practice from fellow heritage railways in England, with the Isle of Wight Steam Railway providing specialist advice on the project as well.

The heritage railway, which has charitable status, first teamed up with Queen’s University, Belfast, with students undertaking research and design work into the frame, stress calculations as well as braking systems, with Harland and Wolff now coming on board to move to the fabrication stage, with the required steel being very kindly provided by long-time DCDR supporter Walter Watson

Ltd Steel Stockholders in Castlewellan.

The project is being taken on as part of Harland & Wolff’s apprenticeship programme, offering

students robust training in areas such as fabrication, welding, and mechanical engineering. This handson project with the Downpatrick & County Down Railway allows

Iconic Belfast dock to be flooded with light and sound in spectacular outdoor theatre show

Text Showgoers will embark on an audiovisual journey, exploring the history of where Belfast began, and choosing what part they can play in its future.

The 30-minute, sundown spectacle will run from 26-29 September is all part of the Belfast 2024 programme of cultural celebrations.

From the creative minds of designer Henry Sykes (Our Place In Space, Banana Block) and Three’s Theatre Company, this mesmerising light show, produced by lighting designers Conal Clapper and Alan Mooney, is accompanied by a captivating soundscape created by award winning composer Katie Richardson.

Creative Director Henry Sykes says it promises to be an unforgettable experience on a Titanic scale: “We’re really excited to bring a world first to one of Belfast’s most famous landmarks. We’re working with a range of local talent to create a mesmerising show that nods to the rich heritage of this city, but also poses questions for

its future.

“It’s about looking at things from a different perspective and that is why we have two ways to view the show, Above and Below Deck. You can view from the top of the dock, down at the lights and hear the enchanting soundscape with narration on speakers, or you can dive deeper into the story with headphones by descending 40 feet below sea level into the dock itself, and walking through the lights, creating shadows, in a fully immersive experience.”

The location has never before been used for an outdoor theatre performance of this scale creating a world first for the iconic venue.

Shadowdock is commissioned by Belfast 2024 through Belfast City Council and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players, and The

apprentices to gain invaluable real-world experience, ensuring the transfer of critical skills from seasoned professionals to the workforce of tomorrow.

Lightbody Foundation.

With special thanks to our venue partners Titanic Distillery, Catalyst and Maritime Belfast Trust.

Gary Lightbody from The Lightbody Foundation said: “Art brings people together. Simple. One of the goals when we set up the foundation was to help struggling people and communities in NI, and

art is one of the most important salves on the soul that there is, and we want to help projects that bring art - be it music, or theatre, or dance - to as many people as possible.

“Shadowdock not only tells the story of the forgotten heritage of the amazing city of Belfast, but also asks questions about where it goes from

here. We’re proud to help give a platform to the local talent behind this experience and who doesn’t love an outdoor show with a difference, and a stunning backdrop.”

Arriving along the Maritime Mile to the iconic Titanic Slipways, event goers will reach their destination at Thompson Dry Dock, beside world renowned Titanic Distillers whiskey distillery.

The performance lasts for approximately 30 minutes and will take place from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 September.

£15m PEACEPLUS investment awarded to promote stronger community relations in Belfast

The Special EU Programmes Body has announced almost £15m (€17.4m) of funding to Belfast City Council in the latest award through the €1.14bn PEACEPLUS Programme.

The funding will support Belfast City Council’s Action Plan, which aims to help build a compassionate, culturally vibrant and inclusive city.

The Council-led project will address the changing needs and diversity of the city, lead to greater inclusion and respect for members of marginalised communities, and increase opportunities for community engagement across different faiths, cultures and ethnic backgrounds.

Through the project, a total of 17,437 participants will actively participate in purposeful, meaningful and sustained contact with others from a different community, cultural or political background, thanks to the funding award. The project will be delivered over the next three and a half years with a total PEACEPLUS investment of €17,437,277.

PEACEPLUS is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) and represents a funding partnership

between the European Union, the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Government of Ireland and the Northern Ireland Executive.

Welcoming today’s announcement, First Minister Michelle O’Neill said: “I am delighted that The Executive Office is supporting this £15m investment in the Belfast City Council area through its PEACEPLUS Co-Designed Local Community Action Plan.

“This funding

demonstrates a commitment to building a more peaceful, tolerant and cohesive society. By working collaboratively with local communities, the initiatives set out within the Plan will help address the area’s unique needs and aspirations.

“This Plan represents a transformative opportunity to foster social harmony and sustain economic growth and prosperity. I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on residents across the city and beyond.”

This is the fourth

funding announcement under the PEACEPLUS Co-designed Local Community PEACE Action Plans investment area, which supports projects developed and delivered by local councils in collaboration with their local communities. In March, Derry City and Strabane District Council and Cavan County Council received their awards, and in May, Causeway Coast and Glens Council and Leitrim County Council were awarded funding, followed by Donegal County Council

in June.

All local authorities within Northern Ireland and the border counties will receive PEACEPLUS funding.

Each council must submit a programme of local investment aimed at addressing specific local challenges. The plan must be designed in collaboration with residents and organisations within their area, and address specific needs such as local regeneration, building positive relations, and celebrating identity and diversity.

Air Ambulance 7th anniversary reflects on 4364 life-saving call outs

Seven years ago, the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) made its inaugural call out to aid 11 year old Conor from Castlewellan following a farming accident, and since then has been needed on over 4,300 occasions, averaging twice per day.

The unique partnership between Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the Charity Air Ambulance NI, operating 365 days a year, brings a transformative change with its combination of speed and medical expertise.

Staffed by a consultant doctor and paramedic from NIAS, and supported by the charity providing the helicopter, pilot, and engineering services, the service has markedly enhanced emergency care.

NIAS Operational Lead for HEMS Glenn O’Rorke said, “Anyone could be a patient and need the air ambulance to fly to them. The crew is tasked to incidents including road traffic collisions, farm, sports or workplace incidents, accidents at home or serious medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest.”

One such patient is Damien Laverty from Carryduff Building Supplies who suffered a severe arm injury at work.

The rapid response and advanced medical care provided by the HEMS team working alongside their NIAS road crew colleagues was crucial in saving his arm and facilitating his recovery.

Northern Ireland Fire and

Rescue Service worked to release Damien’s arm from the machinery and once freed, Damien was anaesthetised by the HEMS Doctor and transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

Speaking about his experience, Damien said: “It has been a long journey to recovery, but I have made great progress. I owe so much to the air ambulance team, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and to the Royal Victoria Hospital for my initial care and treatment. I was at risk of losing my arm but thankfully it was saved and I am back to work.

The air ambulance costs £6,850 per day to run so every penny really does go a long way to making sure that this vital service can continue.”

The service operates 365 days of the year for 12 hours per day and the aircraft can get to the furthest locations in NI from its airbase in Lisburn in approximately 25 minutes.

HEMS Clinical Lead, Doctor Darren Monaghan added: “Damien’s positive outcome illustrates the benefit of emergency services working in partnership

and the importance of the chain of survival for every critically injured patient. On scene, the Doctor Paramedic HEMS team can deliver additional interventions including advanced pain relief, sedation to allow manipulation of fractured limbs, Pre Hospital Blood transfusion and can deliver a Pre Hospital Anaesthetic. Our medical team are humbled daily to be able to ensure patients receive optimal care before they reach hospital.”

Running at a cost of £6,850 per day, the service relies heavily on public donations to meet its annual £2.5 million funding requirement.

Breige Mulholland, Head of Operations and Finance at Air Ambulance NI, expressed gratitude for

the community’s support and emphasized the importance of continued fundraising efforts, “We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to NIAS and the Department of Health for their continued support. Each time the helicopter lifts off we are aware that someone is in great need and that, thanks to the generosity of people locally, the HEMS team can respond and give hope. We are truly grateful to everyone who has been able to support us over the past 7 years and ask for continued support.”

Supporters are encouraged to contribute through regular donations, participate in events, or volunteer. More information on how to get involved can be found at www.airambulanceni.org

Willow: A tree for life

JV Allister writes about the much underestimated value of willow to wildlife and us all Trees have always fascinated me, particularly because of their almost infinite variety, plus their value to us and the wildlife that evolved along with them.

There is one group of trees that are exemplars of variety, the willows. There are two main oak species native to Ireland and only one species of ash, but there are about seven willow species, plus umpteen introductions, hybrids and cultivars.

Their variety originally evolved from ancient climate and habitat change when they emerged as pioneer plants, which were among the first to colonise the bleak landscape after the last Ice age. The fact that they reproduce using feather-light seeds which disperse on the wind made them excellent colonisers.

thrive, but some, as if copying their pioneer forebearers, grow prostrate in hollows on coastal mountains.

On the wildlife front, the number of invertebrates they support has been estimated at up to a whopping 250 species.

They mostly inhabit damp ground and are often found along streams and rivers, where their roots stabilise the banks and create places for aquatic life, even for otters, to live and

Moth and butterfly caterpillars feed on their leaves and are themselves food for birds, while bees feast on their pollen at a critical early part of the year, when other food is scarce.

And they are not just

of considerable value to wildlife, but to us.

Cricket bats, anyone?

Baskets? Thatching?

Even medicine: willow bark contains high quantities of Indole butyric acid which, as far back as the first century, has been used to treat pain, as well as salicin, an antiinflammatory which is used to create salicylic acid, a key ingredient of modern aspirin. Willow bark is also used to promote root development in plants, which of course is the basis for a particular

willow trick: just push a live ‘sally’ stick twothirds deep into soggy ground and it will most likely root and grow. And because of the ease of cultivation and their speed of growth, they are the basis for commercial biomass; remember the Renewable Heat Initiative (RHI)? They may be common and apparently unremarkable, but willows are among our most remarkable and important plants.

Many parents don’t realise that they can claim support with childcare for older children who are using registered childcare provision that ‘wraps around’ the school day such as breakfast and after school clubs. We would encourage all working parents, whatever their circumstances, to do a quick check with the Family Benefits Advice Service to make sure they aren’t missing out on financial support they are entitled to. This can include help with school costs such as uniforms or school meals, or

with other costs (such as housing) as well as childcare costs.

Childcare support

Most working parents are entitled to help paying for registered childcare through one of the following schemes:

• Tax-Free Childcare

• Universal Credit

• Childcare Vouchers (existing claimants only)

• Tax Credits (existing claimants only).

In addition, for parents who use TaxFree Childcare and have children below school age, there is a new Northern Ireland Childcare Subsidy

Scheme in operation from September, which reduces the childcare costs for eligible working parents by 15% for all qualifying children.

Find out what your family is entitled to The Family Benefits Advice Service can help you work out what form of support is best for your family, considering your

circumstances both now and in the future. Call the team on 028 9267 8200 or email hello@ employersforchildcare. org for free, impartial and confidential advice. Last year, we identified an average of over £5,000 for parents who received a personalised ‘better off’ calculation, so it’s a call well worth making.

A guide to building an extension

Getting the planning and preparation right is vital when building an extension. Building an extension can add extra space and value to your home. Whether you need a guest bedroom, bigger living room, or home office, an extension can transform your home. But, an extension needs careful and precise planning, preparation and execution. Where to start when building an extension? Doing some initial planning will help your extension build go smoothly. Here’s a general checklist of things to do before building an extension:

1. Planning permission. Because of permitted development rights, you won’t usually need planning permission for single-storey or conservatory extensions. However, whether you can build without planning permission depends on your property type, the build, and location. Check with your local planning authority if you’re unsure.

2. Building regulations. All homeowners must

comply with building regulations. These regulations outline the required standards for safety, structural integrity, insulation, fire safety, and accessibility. Hiring trades registered with a Competent Person Scheme means they can sign off on work to meet the regulations.

3. Lawful development . Even under Permitted Development, applying for a Lawful Development Certificate (LDC) can be a good idea. Getting an LDC confirms that the building and the construction work did not require planning permission.

4. Party wall agreement. Your home extension might involve building work near or on a wall shared with your neighbour’s property. In this case, you may need a party wall agreement.

5. Neighbours. Always consider your neighbours. Even if you don’t need to worry about a party wall, it’s a good idea to inform your neighbours of your plans and any future

disruption.

6. Leasehold or freehold If you own the leasehold, not freehold, to your property, always check the lease details. Speak with your freeholder before planning or designing an extension.

7. Home insurance. An extension will likely increase the rebuild cost of your home should the worst happen. Your home insurance provider may need to readjust your premiums. Always update your insurer about major home renovations to avoid a void policy and make sure

Project management. Before planning or designing an extension, consider who will manage the project. You can manage your extension build yourself or hire a professional project manager for a smoother process. Professionals who can help you manage your extension in part or fully include: Architects, Interior designers, Project managers and/or Extension builders

Inter I or des I gn I deas to l I ve by

There are so many beautiful interiors out there, how on earth do you choose? The good news is that there are generally no right or wrong choices with interior design. Sure, there are some rules to guide you, but your home interior should be a reflection of the needs and likes of you and your family.

Step one – form and function. The first stage of planning your home interior is finding the balance between how you want your home to look and feel and what you need it to provide for you and your family. So, as well as thinking about how different home interior designs make you feel and which styles you’re drawn to, consider how you use the rooms in your home and what’s important to you.

For example, if you enjoy hosting friends and family, it makes sense to design spaces that will easily accommodate visitors. If clutter makes you twitch, make storage a priority, and if self-care is important, why not create an indulgent spa bathroom? Take the time to consider the history of your home and how this might impact your style choices. Edwardian house interior design ideas, with their large windows and wide hallways, will differ from those for a new build property, for example. One of the final points to bear in mind is flow.

Unless you’re designing a studio apartment, you’ll create a more cohesive feel in your home if you think about the flow from room to room when making your design choices.

Step two – room layout. First of all, consider the function of the room to give it a clear purpose. It’s

entirely possible to use one room for more than one purpose, but aim to ‘zone’ the room into different areas when planning the layout. In addition to furniture and lighting ensure there’s enough space to comfortably move around the room – ’empty’ space is key to help increase the

feeling of spaciousness. Step three – colour scheme. Now it’s time to add your personality to the space. With lots of inspiration out there, it can be hard to know how to narrow down your choices. Start with a mood board. You can either do this the old-fashioned way,

cutting out images from magazines, or use an app such as Pinterest. Colourdrenching, neutrals, or feature walls; your mood board will help to steer you in the right direction. By putting together the images you’re drawn to, you’ll begin to gather a clearer picture of the styles, features, and colours that you like.

Step four – lighting.

Do not underestimate the importance of good lighting when planning your house interior ideas. Many experts agree that it’s best to have between five and seven different lighting sources in each room. For overall lighting (general lighting), consider recessed ceiling spotlights. For task lighting, you might opt for a desk lamp or a reading lamp by an armchair. Spot lighting can be used to illuminate items in a cabinet or a piece of wall art, whereas atmospheric lighting could be a dimmable lamp or

some string lights. The right combination of these varieties of lights in a room will help to create a warm, homely (and functional!) space. Always use a qualified electrician for your lighting installations.

Step five – Finishing touches . Taking inspiration from your mood board, opt for accessories, decorative touches, soft furnishings, and artwork that align with the concepts you were drawn to, helping to add allimportant accent colours.

Remember to include mirrors and plants within your interior design ideas.

Hanging a mirror is not only a practical addition, but it opens up the room, creating the illusion of more space. Plants can bring energy and life to your design scheme alongside health benefits and a pop of colour too. For more information see

Bathroom

Use waterproof fixtures. Choose lights specifically designed for bathrooms to prevent moisture damage. Combine ambient and task lighting. A ceiling light provides overall illumination, while vanity lights offer focused task lighting.

Hallway

Ensure adequate lighting. A well-lit hallway provides safety and security. Consider sconces or a ceiling light. Create a welcoming atmosphere. Use warm white bulbs to create a warm and inviting feel.

Plan your garden redesign this autumn!

The opportunity to redesign your garden gives you the chance to create your dream outdoor space, complementing both your home decor and your personal style. But while garden redesign is an exciting project, it does require careful planning and consideration.

Before you launch your garden redesign project, it’s essential to spend some time planning the various elements!

1. Purpose and function. How do you want to use your garden? Do you want it to be a space for entertaining guests, a peaceful retreat, or a play area for the children?

Answering these questions will help to shape the layout and the features that are important to include in your garden. For example: If you want your garden to be an entertaining space, consider where the dining area should be. This could be influenced by the position of the evening sun, making it an ideal spot for some outdoor furniture Perhaps you want to create an outdoor kitchen or a BBQ area. If so, where would be the most convenient place to build it? Near the kitchen to avoid traipsing up and down the garden with plates of food, perhaps Want to enjoy a morning coffee in the sunshine?

Check the position of the morning sun and plan the optimal position for some garden seating

2. Site analysis. As with any renovation, it’s essential to spend time in the space to understand it better, noting: Where the sun hits your garden at different times of the day What type of soil you have and how well it drains Existing plants or structures you want to keep Whether there are any elements you can recycle or repurpose This will not only help when planning your layout and hard landscaping, but also the best type of plants to include too.

3. Budget If you’ve watched garden redesign programmes on TV, you’ll appreciate it’s possible to redesign your garden for just a few hundred pounds or to ramp the budget up to tens of thousands of pounds. It’s therefore important to decide on your budget at the start of the project. Depending on what you want to

include in your plans, this may need to cover hard landscaping materials, any labour costs, plants, and outdoor furniture.

4. Style and themes. With various different garden styles and themes, there’s limitless scope to create your ideal sanctuary. From contemporary to minimalist, cottage to tropical, there’s a vast array of options to choose from. But how do you narrow your choices down? Create a mood board of gardens you’re drawn to, collecting ideas and design elements in one

place. This helps to define your visual concept . Visit local gardens to identify plants you like, taking inspiration from their landscaping too Look through gardening magazines to identify your favourite themes and styles Of course, you can also book a consultation with an experienced landscape gardener or garden designer to help plan your new outdoor space. Planning your dream kitchen

How to plan a kitchen layout. Aesthetics aside (for now!), let’s look at some of the key recommendations for planning a kitchen layout that’ll give you ultimate functionality.

The work triangle. This is perhaps the most important factor to consider in your kitchen layout. The ‘work triangle’ is the positioning of your oven, fridge, and sink, which are the three most commonly used items in the kitchen. It’s impractical and dangerous to carry pans of hot water the length of the kitchen to drain pasta or vegetables, for example.

As a general rule, aim for no more than a step and half in distance between the three points of your ‘work triangle’, i.e. your oven, fridge, and sink. It’s useful to have a work surface to put things on next to the fridge/freezer and the hob/oven (making sure the latter is heatproof).

Avoid positioning the oven right next to a wall or tall cupboard – it’s best to have some free space either side for comfortable working. Don’t forget electrical sockets. You want at least one double socket for every 1.5m of wall space, plus sockets at floor level for the vacuum, for example.

How will you use the space? There’s a reason why the kitchen is affectionately known as ‘the heart of the home’. People naturally gravitate to the kitchen and it can often be one of the busiest areas of the house. Avoid the daily chaos sweeping through the kitchen with some clever planning. Create

a dedicated area before you enter the kitchen for items such as coats, shoes, and bags. This could be a bench and storage in a specific section of the kitchen, or a mudroom or utility if you have the space.

Perfect positioning. Make sure the primary passageway through the kitchen is unobstructed, i.e. that the oven or dishwasher doesn’t open into this space. Passageways need to be wide enough to stand and open the doors of appliances. If planning a kitchen island, make sure it doesn’t block the area in front of your main appliances, leaving enough room to open the appliance doors and pass by. If work surfaces are opposite each other, plan enough space between them so that two people can work comfortably at the same time.

Maximise the available space. When planning your kitchen layout, think about the storage you’ll need and where this will be. With some imagination and creativity, your kitchen walls can be cleverly transformed into a range of different storage solutions. Wall cabinets are a traditional solution for storing crockery and food, with glass-fronted cabinets for housing glassware.

Pantry storage is becoming increasingly popular to hide away small appliances such as the coffee machine and toaster, baking accessories, and dry food items Open shelves, wall hooks, and overhead racks for saucepans can add to the kitchen’s overall aesthetic Need help visualising your plans? Hiring an experienced kitchen designer will make your life easier in planning your

dream space.

A kitchen renovation project can range in price depending on the scope of the work, the complexity of the design, and the finishes you choose. A budget renovation could cost in the region of £6,000, while a fully bespoke kitchen could cost up to £35,000. It’s crucial to set a budget to keep your project on track. Make a list of everything you’ll need for your renovation: Start from the top down, including lighting, paint, splashbacks, window dressings, cabinets and shelves, worktops, sink, taps, appliances, and flooring Include the cost of labour for any items that’ll require it.

Wanting to incorporate wallpaper into your home but not sure how?

We’ve got some new and exciting ideas to inspire. If you’re embarking on a room renovation and want to add some colour, pattern or that extra

wow-factor, wallpaper can do just that. With most elements of interiors, wallpaper trends come and go, but we’ve put together the top trends that should

give you some food for thought when planning your next decorating project

Ombre wallpaper. A hot trend right now is ombre wallpaper. This started with an ombre painting technique that became extremely popular, however, it can be quite tricky to create.

Opting for ombre wallpaper is a great alternative as it creates the same effect with less hassle and there is less technique required – you just need to make sure the sheets are lined up properly… maybe we’ve made that sound easier than it actually is! If in doubt, find a local expert who will hang your wallpaper straight!

Botanical wallpaper. Bringing the outside in is a big part of how we choose to decorate nowadays. It is proven that incorporating plants and botanical elements in your home can uplift your mood and make you feel more connected and relaxed. Hanging botanical print

wallpaper is an effective way of doing this. Botanical prints include banana leaf plants, dramatic florals and jungle-themed designs. Go bold with a wallpaper mural. This is one solid design that fits over an entire wall. It definitely makes a statement and is for the brave decorators and homeowners amongst us. Popular mural designs include various landscapes, such as a mountain range, jungle or forest.

Monochrome wallpaper. Colour might not be your thing, and that’s fine, monochrome is definitely having a moment in 2024. A monochrome design could be spots, stripes, or a geometric pattern… the possibilities are endless. Monochrome wallpapers are a lovely option for a modern industrial home.

Large scale prints. When choosing your wallpaper design for your next decorating

project, try to go for a large-scale print. Small, ditsy designs can be jarring for the eye and can look a bit muddled. Instead, large prints make a statement and create a more coherent look.

Striped wallpaper. Stripes never go out of fashion and 2024 is no exception.

Incorporating striped

wallpaper into your living room or bedroom scheme will look fun and modern. We suggest keeping this to one wall because if you wallpapered the whole room it might be a little bit disorientating! 70s throwback. The 70s are back! Retro wallpaper designs are definitely on the hot list right now. Rusty

reds, mustards and navy blues are a true 70s colour palette and look amazing printed onto wallpaper. If you want to add a dose of retro charm to your home, then a 70s inspired wallpaper is a fantastic design decision.

If you’re looking for practical, stylish, durable, and cost-effective flooring solutions, you’re in the right place.

Practical bedroom carpet ideas. Carpet is one of the most common choices when it comes to bedroom floor ideas. It’s cosy underfoot, has good insulating properties, and is available in many different styles and colours. For a kid’s bedroom in particular –where little ones play on the floor – carpet is the most comfortable option.

Versatile bedroom carpet ideas. Grey carpet provides a neutral, calm backdrop that works with an array of different paint colours. So if you redecorate your bedroom in the future or make a quick update with a feature wall, you know your grey flooring is likely to match.

Bedroom wood flooring ideas. Wood floor is timeless – it will never go out of fashion. It’s also the most hypoallergenic bedroom flooring,

making it ideal for people with allergies.

Dark wood floor bedroom ideas. Earthy, natural tones are trendy bedroom floor ideas for 2024, making a dark wood floor a great choice. Dark wood floors work particularly well in men’s bedrooms or in Japandistyle rooms, offset with lighter, neutral tones on the walls.

Herringbone bedroom floor ideas. Wood flooring laid in a herringbone pattern adds interest and texture to a room and can even help to create the illusion of more space.

Incredibly versatile, herringbone wood flooring works equally well with a muted palette of neutrals or a bolder choice.

Laminate bedroom flooring ideas. The great thing about laminate flooring is its ability to

mimic more expensive natural stone or wood at a fraction of the cost. This makes it a brilliant option for homeowners wanting cheap flooring ideas for bedrooms that still look great.

Grey laminate flooring in a bedroom. If you weren’t already sold on laminate flooring, consider going grey. Its versatility shines through in this image, where it’s teamed with muted

shades. However, it would work equally well as a foundation colour in a bedroom that’s decorated in bold hues.

Cheap flooring ideas for bedrooms .Vinyl flooring is resistant to stains, rips,

tears, damage, and water penetration. It’s also incredibly cost-effective. We love the variety of colours and styles, allowing you to match up your flooring to your bedroom decor.

LVT bedroom flooring ideas LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) or LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) flooring options are quick and easy to install, using a click-and-lock system over the top of your floor’s sublayer. It’s a great way to add pattern and interest to a bedroom if you’re feeling bold. Bamboo. Bamboo flooring is an eco-friendly and sustainable option that’s growing in popularity due to its strength, durability, and attractiveness.

If you are keen on incorporating this ecofriendly flooring in your home, look for an FSC certification or other certifications such as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). Tiled bedroom floor. Tiled bedroom flooring

looks particularly elegant in a vintage-style bedroom.

Teamed with underfloor heating or some bedside rugs, floor tiles are synonymous with charming country cottage or farmhouse styles. And the best part is, they’re a great investment – lasting much longer than carpets. Concrete bedroom flooring. It may not be the first material that comes to mind when you think of bedroom flooring ideas, but many homeowners are installing concrete flooring for a contemporary look. Paired with underfloor heating and of course, a cosy rug to step out of bed onto, concrete flooring creates a slick, modern vibe in any room. https://www. checkatrade. com/blog/ideas/ bedroom-flooring-ideas/

Autumn Garden Jobs: A Checklist for a Beautiful Spring

As the days shorten and the nights grow colder, it’s time to prepare your garden for the upcoming winter and set it up for a vibrant spring bloom. Here’s a checklist of essential autumn garden jobs to keep your outdoor space looking its best.

Planting and Sowing

• Plant spring bulbs: Now is the perfect time to plant spring bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths. These will emerge from the ground in early spring, adding a burst of color.

• Sow hardy annuals: Some hardy annuals can be sown directly into the ground in autumn for spring blooms. These include cornflowers, calendula, and poppies.

• Plant trees and shrubs: Autumn is a great time to plant deciduous trees and shrubs, as the cooler

weather allows them to establish themselves before the winter. Pruning and Maintenance

• Prune deciduous shrubs: Prune deciduous shrubs that have finished flowering, such as roses and hydrangeas. This will help them to maintain their shape and encourage healthy growth.

• Remove dead or damaged plants: Clear away any dead or dying plants to prevent the spread of diseases.

• Mulch flower beds:

Apply a layer of mulch to flower beds to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect plant roots from frost.

• Clean up fallen leaves: Rake up and dispose of fallen leaves to prevent them from smothering plants and encouraging pests.

Preparing for Winter

• Protect tender plants: If you have tender plants that can’t withstand frost, take steps to protect them. This might involve covering them with frost blankets or moving them indoors.

• Winterize containers: Bring potted plants indoors or move them to a sheltered location to protect them from the cold.

• Store garden tools: Clean and store garden tools in a dry, sheltered place to prevent rust and damage. By completing these autumn garden jobs, you can ensure that your garden remains healthy and vibrant throughout the winter months and is ready to burst into life come spring.

Autumn might be one of the most picturesque seasons of the year, but few will deny that the colder, darker and wetter weather makes it harder to stay motivated to exercise.

Exercising in this season can be somewhat daunting. Dragging oneself from the comfort of their warm and comfortable bed to battle the elements during a morning run is the stuff of nightmares for many – however you can reap serious rewards when bracing the weather to get out and about this autumn season.

Seasonal adjustment disorder is but one condition that can be alleviated by regular exercise. Numerous studies have shown that incorporating exercise into your daily routine can boost one’s mood as well as decreasing stress, anxiety and depression. So getting up and out will not only benefit your physically, but also mentally. Changing up your routine is one way of staying motivated to exercise this autumn. Whilst going for a morning run might have

seemed attractive when the weather was dry and warm, the colder and wetter mornings might be better suited for an indoor swim.

Perhaps joining a gym is the best way to stay fit over the winter, providing an indoor environment that can encourage exercise no matter the weather. In the same way, mixing up your diet is important to staying healthy this autumn. Salads and

fruit might have been the order of the day during the summer months, but your body will need more sustenance to fight off the flu and keep you warm during the winter season.

Mixing some soups, chowders and shakes into your diet can be a great way of diversifying your diet and making sure that you do not get bored eating the same old meals time and time

again. One benefit of the nights getting longer is that many find it significantly easier to get a long night sleep. As it gets dark earlier, it is often easier to get into a night time routine and securing those essential 8 hours rest per night – studies have found that those who get less than 6 hours sleep per night tend to have a higher than average BMI.

Tesco stores across Northern Ireland have helped to raise £52,537 for Marie Curie, one of the UK’s leading end-of-life charity.

The money was raised by volunteer collections at Tesco stores across the Province in only one weekend.

Tesco NI partnered with Marie Curie to facilitate collections as part of Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal, which is a public collection campaign that happens annually.

Robert Wilson, Tesco Newtownbreda Community Champion, said, “Tesco are delighted to maintain their strong connection with Marie Curie across all our stores and we always welcome their volunteers at springtime for their daffodil appeal.

“At our store, customers and colleagues certainly show their appreciation of the care that Marie Curie nurses provide, which is reflected in the generosity of their donations, and this support is evident in all Tesco stores nationwide.”

Conor O’Kane, Senior Partnership Manager (NI &

Scotland), at Marie Curie is very grateful for Tesco’s contribution: “Marie Curie was delighted that Tesco NI again supported our annual Great Daffodil Appeal. Thanks to Tesco NI staff for their welcome and their stellar support for all our volunteers across the collection weekend.

Ageing Well c A mp A ign urges people to get A ctive to help live longer A nd stronger

A new campaign focussing on the importance and benefits of physical activity to help live longer and stronger, has been launched in community pharmacies across Northern Ireland.

The ‘Live longer and stronger’ campaign aims to raise awareness of agerelated deconditioning and the importance of physical activity and will run in community pharmacies throughout August and September as part of the Living Well service.

Living Well is offered in over 500 pharmacies across Northern Ireland and provides information and advice on public health issues. It is delivered in partnership with the Public Health Agency (PHA), Community Pharmacy NI (CPNI), and the Department of Health (DoH).

Jeff Scroggie, Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Manager and Ageing Well Lead at the PHA said: “It is never too late to gain health benefits from physical activity. Ageing is inevitable, but the pace at which physical changes occur can be slowed or even reversed with regular physical activity.

“Including some physical activity into your weekly routine will benefit you mentally as well as increase your quality of life. It can help make you feel happier, keep your brain sharp, prevent falls and help to keep you living independently to enjoy life and activities with friends and family for longer.”

Local Community Pharmacist Killian Johnston from H Sweeny Pharmacy, Quayside Shopping Centre in Derry/Londonderry, welcomed the campaign.

He said: “Community pharmacy is an ideal setting to help encourage people to look after their health by engaging in initiatives such as the Living Well campaigns.

“You are more likely to

maintain your independence and overall wellbeing if you have led an active lifestyle and made healthier choices throughout your life. The more time spent being physically active, the greater the health benefits including better sleep.

“Pharmacy teams will be promoting the benefits of physical activity and where possible, signposting to relevant local groups and activities people can take part in. We would encourage patients and customers to call into their local pharmacy to ask for advice and information.”

Gerard Walls, Senior Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Officer at the PHA, said: “The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend being active for at least two and a half hours each week, including doing activities that can help improve muscle strength and balance at least twice a week. We would recommend breaking up the activity into smaller bouts across the week and limit the amount of time spent being sedentary, such as lying or sitting.

“It is also important to remember that everyone has a different starting point, if this level of weekly activity is not achievable for you, start with light activities, such as walking, try to walk a bit faster than normal, cleaning or gardening is also a good way to try to build up gradually.

“Research shows that from 50 years of age we naturally lose muscle and bone density year on year, but being active can help reverse this.

“Regular physical activity provides physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits, including having

a healthier heart and helping to lower the risk of developing conditions like dementia, Type 2 diabetes, stroke and some cancers.

“Even relatively small increases in physical activity can contribute to improved health and quality of life. No matter how active you may be, doing a little more can help. Every movement counts.”

Top tips

Limit the amount of time spent being sedentary, such as lying or sitting.

Activities that improve strength and balance, such as carrying heavy shopping bags, yoga or doing exercises that use your own body weight, such as pushups or wall presses and sit to stands. These activities will help to reduce the risk of falls and help you feel more confident.

Join a local Walking for

Health group. They cater for walkers of all abilities.

Take a walk with friends, rather than sitting with them for a chat.

Do some strengthening activities, such as standing up from a chair without using your arms or aided if needed.

Move around the house.

Cleaning and gardening counts as physical activity.

You could use the time waiting for the kettle to boil to walk up and down the stairs or do some lunges,

Autumn Home

Pre PA re Your Home for Winter

As the leaves begin to change colour and the days grow shorter, it’s time to turn your attention to preparing your home for the colder months ahead.

Autumn is the ideal time to carry out essential maintenance tasks that will protect your property and save you money on energy bills. Here’s a checklist to get you started:

Exterior Maintenance

• Clear gutters and downpipes: Autumn leaves can quickly clog gutters, leading to

water damage. Clear them thoroughly to prevent blockages.

• Check roof for damage: Inspect your roof for missing tiles, damaged flashing, or signs of wear and tear. Address any issues promptly.

• Trim trees and shrubs: Remove overhanging branches that could damage your property during storms.

boiler service before the heating season kicks in.

• Bleed radiators: Ensure efficient heating by bleeding your radiators to remove trapped air.

• Check for drafts: Seal any gaps around windows and doors to prevent heat loss.

• Chimney sweep: If you have a fireplace, arrange for a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote.

• Ventilation: Maintain good ventilation to prevent damp and mould issues. By taking the time to complete these autumn home maintenance tasks, you’ll not only protect your property but also create a warm and cosy environment for the winter months.

Cream living room ideas for paired-back elegance

Looking for versatile cream living room ideas? If you’re a discerning designer (or want to be one), you know neutral tones offer the perfect canvas for creating tasteful and warm aesthetics

Cream living room ideas are upmarket and stylish when applied using the right techniques. For example, a balance of accessories, textures, accent colours, and plants will transform any space –

taking it from drab to fab!

Cream also lets you switch up your style whenever you want, making it a versatile base note for you to build upon. Whether it’s hygge or Scandi, minimalism or organic modern.

Embrace Scandi-style cream living room ideas. When Hygee meets Scandi, they create the ultimate comfort zone. With warm features, fluffy textures, and plenty of light, cream undertones create serenity and simplicity. For effortless luxury, keep the accessories and furniture in the realm of neutral decor. Examples such as the wood-weaved pendant light, slatted room divider, high-pile rug, and thickknit throw are nice ways to add class and warmth. Include plants in your cream living room décor. Cream is the perfect

shade for bright and airy homes. So, why not extend the theme by introducing lots of lung-loving houseplants? With biophilic trends on the rise, it’s the perfect opportunity to turn your living room into a plant nursery. Furthermore, if you’re a city dweller living in an apartment, introducing a perennial or two to your decor is one of the best ways to improve your home’s air quality. Add a colour pop to your modern cream living room. Thankfully, there

isn’t a colour known to humanity that doesn’t work well with cream. For an organic modern design, add some burnt orange, rich browns, and lighttoned woods to your decor. Organic modern design is all about layering neutral textiles and textures to create maximum interest.

The aim is to create a polished yet casual atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease. What colour goes with a cream sofa in a living room? For those who’ve braved a cream

sofa in their living room, accessorising it with the right colour is a matter of preference.

If your home is a sanctuary filled with all things muted and tranquil, keep your accessories on the same shade spectrum. However, if you’d like to add some boldness and fun, choose patterns for interest or a block colour for a two-toned effect.

Insp I r I ng conservatory I deas

Whether you’re building a new conservatory or looking to give your current conservatory a little TLC, get inspired for your next project with a mix of these fun and unique ideas!

When it comes to conservatory ideas, it’s all about the ambience and elegance. How they look and feel is what makes them so popular. Not only are they cheaper than extensions, but they also add value to your home and connect you to your garden. With the wide range of conservatories available, choosing the right one for your home can feel overwhelming. However, despite what the internet will have you believe, it requires only a few considerations.

Questions to ask yourself include: What square footage am I working with? Which conservatory design will fit in with the style of my house? How do I want to use my conservatory? (i.e. For dining, sunbathing, botany, or reading etc.)

Once you’ve answered these questions, it’s just a matter of choosing your design and deciding how best to decorate it.

Glass extensions

Glass extensions are a sleek and effortless way to upgrade your conservatory. Not only do they invite lots of light and warmth into your home, but they also work with almost any brickwork or cladding design.

Double glazing and integrated doors offer a seamless transition into your garden, while landscaping your outdoor space gives you something beautiful to look at on a rainy day.

An orangery

Bringing nature indoors with tall parlour palms and hanging baskets full of Mandevilla (‘Rocktrumpet’) is ideal. Better yet, if you’re opting for an

orangery, the world is your botanical oyster. For a fragrant oasis, attach Bougainvillea and Jasminum azoricum to trellises; decorate tables with Stephanotis floribunda-filled pots, and place giant Phoenix palms in lonely corners. Succulent popularity is spiking in the world of interior design. If you’re less green-fingered than the average gardener, having a selection of cacti displayed in terrariums, vases, and/ or refined concrete pots is a (literally) effortless way of modernising your space. A coloured conservatory

Have you been searching for conservatory colour ideas? Teal is a multifaceted colour available in a spectrum of shades – from pale celeste and aquamarine to rich evergreen and

ocean blue. Choosing the right shade for your conservatory is just a matter of light. The brighter the room, the darker you can get away with. That said, to maintain balance, we suggest you stick to the middle of the palette.

A contemporary dining area

A great way to utilise your modern conservatory is to turn it into a garden dining room. Think quintessential picnics with jute decor and polished brass place settings. You can either design a more formal dining area by sticking with a traditional dining

table and chairs or opt for something a little more sociable and choose benches and relaxed floor seating. Small conservatory ideas.

Stackable furniture. When it comes to decorating a small conservatory, maximising your space

and working with the light is essential.

Stackable rattan furniture is perfect for keeping things neat and compact.

Bring the outdoors in. Bring nature inside with faux fur rugs, woven Scandinavian baskets and a hanging chair or two. They take up less space than sofas or tables and are great for unwinding after a long day.

A natural sanctuary.

Turning your small conservatory into a natural sanctuary is a great use of space.

Conservatory ideas for small spaces include using slimline furniture and potted plants that work well together, leaving you to inject colour with accessories such as accent chairs, floor lamps, and cushions. Perfect for enjoying a Sunday afternoon reading or

10 home jobs you cannot DIY

When it comes to jobs around the home there are some things you shouldn’t try yourself, especially when 47% of Brits have had a DIY disaster*.

Your unqualified hands could put you in a lot of danger, and worse, put others in danger. You could even invalidate your home insurance, which would leave you in a really difficult situation and with a heavy repair cost. This list by no means covers everything, but it does answer the most common queries we get on whether to hire a pro or not for a job.

1) Fixing a gas leak. In fact, anything to do with gas. You must legally be on the Gas Safe Register to deal with any gas appliances. Attempting to fix anything gas related can have serious effects on your health and the safety of others around you, not to mention the potential of an explosion.

2) Removing asbestos. Asbestos is dangerous, so removing it is best left to the professionals. Asbestos comes with serious health risks. So much so that in 1999, the dangers of asbestos were officially recognised in the UK. All use of asbestos was banned. To have asbestos removed, you will need a qualified surveyor to carry out an inspection.

3) Fitting a new bath. Whether you’re upgrading your entire bathroom, or you’re having issues with your current bathtub, you

taking a restorative nap while rain patters on the rooftop.

Multifunctional furniture. Whether you turn your small conservatory into a kitchen, dining room, reading nook, home garden, or zen retreat, there are several spacesaving designs that can help make the most of your space. Think stackable coffee tables, fitted pantry shelves, L-shaped window benches, and foldaway furniture. Finish the look with decorative cushions, throws, and plants. Built-in storage and corner shelves keep your conservatory floor clutter-free and roomy. Pick a rug for the perfect finish and get ready to enjoy a minimalist environment! Information used courtesy of https://www. checkatrade.com/blog/ ideas/conservatory-ideas/

should definitely leave the installation of a new tub to a professional. Failure to do so could result in a leak in your home and a very unrelaxing soak in the tub!

4) Knocking down an internal wall. Knocking down an internal wall is a great way to open up your living space and create a freeflowing area to enjoy. But knocking down an internal wall is not a DIY job, so don’t start swinging your sledgehammer around. The wall could be loadbearing. If you attempt to knock down a load-bearing wall without any steel reinforcement, it will result in your ceilings falling through, and whatever is above it coming down too.

5) Foundation work. The foundations of any building are the most important part of the structure. If the foundations are wrong, then the subsoil can spread and the structure can settle unequally, leading to structural problems down the line.

Good foundations are a lot more than just digging a hole and pouring some concrete in, it needs to be exactly right.

6) Window installation. A poorly fitted window leads to lots of problems. These include: Injury to yourself, your family, and

people passing by Reduced home efficiency (energy loss, draughts and leaks) Lack of security Legal and insurance ramifications Structural issues and a poor finish (mould and mildew may appear) Avoid these risks and work with a professional window fitter.

tools, and they know how best to cut a tree of any size. Even better, they will remove your tree much quicker than you would yourself.

7) Tree removal. Cutting down a tree is dangerous work. Although there’s a risk of falling from a height, there’s also the risk of being hit by debris. And even if the falling debris misses you, other people, houses and vehicles nearby may not be so lucky. A professional tree surgeon will know exactly how to control the removal of your tree. They have the experience, they have the

8) Electrical work. Electrical work, similar to gas work, requires a highly qualified professional to take on the job, due to safety reasons. Incorrect or unsafe wiring is dangerous. Not only is it a massive fire risk, but it could electrocute you, a member of your family, or guests.

9) Roof installation and repairs. Your roof protects you from the elements, but only if it has been installed or repaired correctly. Keeping it watertight and making sure there are no leaks is so important. A

damaged roof can lead to lots of problems in your home, from damp, leaking ceilings to severe structural damage. Patching it up yourself can be dangerous without the correct safety equipment. Getting up onto the roof is a risk to yourself. Then once you’re there there’s also the risk that you do not patch up the

roof correctly, meaning the damage will worsen over time.

10) Pest infestations. Pest control specialists can have your home cleared of unwanted visitors quickly without you having to live in fear of living with whatever pest it may be. Prices usually start at around £120 to have mice and rats

removed. Pest controllers can also remove bedbugs, cockroaches and ants.
