Geothermal energy sector ‘heating up’ with launch of £3 million project
A new multimillion pound project from the Department for the Economy (DfE) is set to explore the potential for geothermal energy in Northern Ireland.
The project designed to ‘unearth the heat beneath our feet’ aims to support how we decarbonise the energy sector in pursuit of net zero carbon targets by 2050.
Launched recently at the Pavilion, Stormont Estate, the project, known as GeoEnergy NI, will examine both shallow and deep geothermal at the Stormont Estate, Belfast and College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Greenmount Campus, Antrim, respectively.
Mike Brennan, Permanent Secretary of the Department for the Economy, said:
“GeoEnergy NI is a milestone project of the Energy Strategy Action Plan, which focuses on delivering a reduction
in energy-related emissions as part of the pathway to deliver net zero carbon and affordable energy by 2050.
This project will increase our understanding of the potential role that geothermal energy can play in Northern Ireland’s green economy and future energy mix.”
Representing a £3 million investment, GeoEnergy NI is being delivered by DfE with scientific support from the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI) and a specialist contractor team led by Tetra Tech Europe.

BELFAST CITY AIRPORT DONATES LIFESAVING EQUIPMENT IN MEMORY OF YOUNG MAGGIE BLACK
Belfast City Airport has donated potentially life-saving defibrillator equipment to St John’s Camogie Club in Carnlough, in memory of former youth player and local resident, Maggie Black.
The much-loved fiveyear-old tragically passed away in December 2021 as a result of undiagnosed Addison’sDisease, a condition extremely rare especially in someone of Maggie’s age.
After falling ill at home in rural Glenarm, Maggie was forced to wait 70 minutes for the ambulance service to arrive on scene to administer medical assistance that could
possibly have saved her life. This state-of-the-art defibrillator, donated by Belfast City Airport’s longstanding Community Fund, could prevent another incident like this happening in the seaside village by ensuring residents have public access to medical provision until such times as professional health services can reach the location.
During the lengthy wait for medical aid to reach
the County Antrim coast, the Black family called upon the local fire service for assistance. Attending the scene that morning was Carnlough resident and Watch Commander at Belfast City Airport Fire Service, Martin Campbell.
Speaking at the installation of the defibrillator at St John’s Camogie Club playing fields in the heart of Carnlough village, Maggie’s mother Sheenagh Black said:
“We are so grateful for Belfast City Airport donating this defibrillator in Maggie’s memory and helping keep her name and spirit alive.
“Maggie was always so full of life at the camogie club, playing and having fun with her friends, so it’s very fitting for this life-saving equipment to be installed here.”
Sheenagh continued:
“As a family, we would never wish anyone else to experience what we went through, but the sad reality is that this invaluable defibrillator, kindly provided by Belfast City Airport, will be needed somewhere down the line and it could be the
difference between life and death.”
Compassionately compelled by the passing of their daughter, Maggie’s parents launched a petition, Maggie’s Call, which called for the fire service to also be automatically dispatched alongside the ambulance service to emergency
medical calls in rural areas.
Whilst the service is up and running in Carnlough, eighteen months down the line, it has not yet been given the green light elsewhere.
The defibrillator installation comes ahead of an annual camogie tournament in the village held in Maggie’s memory
each summer and is the latest project supported by Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund. For more information on the Airport’s Community Fund which was established in 2009 and has to date invested almost £500,000 back into the local community, visit www. belfastcityairport.com

Northern Ireland nursery chain wins major UK childcare awards
Northern Ireland’s largest nursery group has won two prestigious UK industry gongs for all eight of its childcare facilities.
Clear Day Nurseries, which launched in 2005, operates in Belfast, Dundonald, Portadown, Glengormley, Lurgan, Lisburn and Bangor, employing over 270 staff across and catering for around 800 children.
Managing Director Audrey McCracken said the nursery was delighted to have been recognised at UK level with the Top 20 Nurseries and Top 20 Nursery Group awards – for a sixth consecutive year.
“We work in partnership with parents and offer quality childcare from a very early age,” she said.
“We believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life and these awards reaffirm our commitment to delivering exceptional early years education. That’s why we invest a lot into the professional development of our exceptionally dedicated team.
“We’re also committed to keeping our nurseries above industry standard and we’re constantly evaluating the practices we have within our nurseries. It’s that combination of people and passion which has allowed us to continue to grow and
expand our footprint across Northern Ireland.”
Jill McWilliams, Head of Operations, added that the awards represented “a wonderful achievement for a brilliant team who always go above and beyond”.
“Our ethos is very much about supporting the needs of individual children and this is reflected in the praise we get from parents when they’re reviewing our services,” she said.
“Parents and carers need high quality, affordable, trusted childcare, which is what we strive to provide.”
Business owner and mother Nicole McLaughlin, whose daughter Sienna (2) has a place at Kids@ BT9 at Ulsterville Avenue in Belfast, described the nursery as “a home from home”.
“I wanted to know that my child was going to be looked after as well as she would be at home,” said Nicole.
“Sienna has some complex dietary needs, due to a health condition, and we feel that Clear Day Nurseries has really taken that on board,” she said.
“The first months were very difficult but both the communication and
the support we got from Clear Day Nurseries was unbelievable and it definitely gave me the confidence I needed to go back to work without constantly worrying about Sienna.”
Other childcare facilities in the group include Little Gems, Dundonald;
Greendale, Glengormley; Holly House, Dollingstown; First Steps, Portadown; Clearly Kids, Lisburn; Clearly Kids, Belfast; and Clearly Kids, Bangor. Clear Day Nurseries is consistently recognised as being in the top 20 day care facilities in the UK.

Ulster Bank provides £20m facility to Ha B integ for new social H o U sing
Habinteg Housing Association (Ulster) has secured an additional £20m funding facility from Ulster Bank to support its plans to deliver new homes across Belfast and the North West.
With Ulster Bank support, the association has committed to further investment in a range of new social housing led projects across the North West and Belfast, including a £12m
scheme of 73 apartments at Duke Street in the Waterside area of Derry City and a £6m development with 31 units at Beersbridge Road in Belfast.
In addition to new housing, the financial package provided by Ulster Bank is supporting Habinteg to reinvest in existing homes, including an asset-wide programme of energy efficiency measures to support the association’s decarbonisation targets.
Ulster Bank relationship director, Richard Lusty, said: “New housing investment is a significant stimulant for the local economy. In addition to providing muchneeded homes, it creates and sustains employment opportunities within the construction sector – and right throughout the supply chain. Housing-led regeneration also helps to establish sustainable, vibrant and connected communities. The benefits of housing investment are far-reaching and long-lasting, and this is why we’re very pleased to increase our support for the important work Habinteg is
delivering across Northern Ireland.”
The new facilities provided by the bank are in addition to an existing £20m financial package, bringing the bank’s total support for Habinteg to over £40m. Habinteg will blend this private sector funding with grants from the Department for Communities to help deliver the Social Housing Development Programme throughout Northern Ireland. Habinteg chief executive, Darren McKinney, said: “At Habinteg, we strive to provide high quality, accessible, and affordable homes to enrich the communities in which we operate. This further investment in Belfast and the North West, supported by Ulster Bank, will provide much needed homes for families, the elderly and those with additional needs. As we look forward to a Net Zero world, we are prioritising sustainability in terms of our new build projects, which are built to the highest standards, and our existing portfolio with

Belfast school pupils’ winning designs urge dog owners to scoop the poop
Dog waste remains a foul issue in Belfast, but the city’s schoolchildren are on the owners’ cases to clean it up!
Belfast City Council recently reached out to P5P7 school classes across the city, inviting pupils to respond to the Billboard Challenge to help highlight the issue of dog fouling in their communities.
Over 56 entries poster designs were submitted from 18 schools and the four winning entries from St Anne’s Primary School in Finaghy, John Paul II PS, Whiterock Road, Strandtown PS and Hazelwood Integrated Primary School have now been displayed on giant billboards near their schools. Participating schools also received a visit from the council’s education awareness team who chatted to pupils about the problems dog poo can cause and highlighted why it’s so important for everyone to clean up after their pets, each and every time.
Mr O’Boyle, teacher of the winning John Paul 11 Primary School student, commented: “Our P6 pupils are delighted to have won the Billboard Challenge competition and see their artwork proudly displayed. It’s great to encourage their creativity, whilst teaching valuable lessons around
civic responsibility. Thank you to Belfast City Council for the brilliant initiative and invitation to visit the billboard.”
Amy Glover from Strandtown Primary School said: “The children in my class thoroughly enjoyed working together to create a persuasive and eye-catching design for the billboard.
When they were told their design had won, they were over the moon! They were so excited to go and see their work up in our local area and said this was the most
rewarding art task they have ever completed in school!”
Teacher Ramona Breslin, from Hazelwood Integrated Primary School, added:
“Our P5 pupils said they loved taking part in the Billboard Challenge and they were shocked to learn about how hazardous dog fouling can be for humans and how big a problem is for our local communities.
“One of our competition winners, Abbie (age 9) was so excited, she’s taken her whole family to see it and she’s hoping that lots of
passers-by will see it and think twice about leaving dog dirt on the footpaths.”
The Billboard Challenge is one of a number of education and awareness initiatives undertaken by Belfast City Council to encourage responsible dog ownership and make it clear to dog owners that it’s #YourDogYourJob to help keep the city clean.

Call for volunteers at the up C oming o ne Young World s ummit
With the world’s largest gathering of young leaders taking place in Belfast this October, the call has gone out for volunteers to help roll out a giant welcome to Northern Ireland.
Welcoming more than 2,000 young leaders from over 190 countries, the One Young World Belfast Summit (2nd - 5th October) will represent four life-changing days of knowledge-sharing and networking, where young delegates will be counselled by some of the most influential political, business and humanitarian leaders in the world.
Belfast City Council are assembling groups of volunteers who will be charged with everything from welcoming delegates, hosting VIPs, being ‘accessibility buddies’ through to assisting at the opening and closing ceremonies.
Volunteer Now Chief Executive, Denise Hayward says Northern Ireland has a rich tradition of excelling in hosting international events. She said: “From the World Police and
Fire Games through to the Giro d’Italia and The Open Championship, Volunteer Now has provided volunteers for some of the biggest events to take place in Northern Ireland.
“The feedback from the organisers of these events always praises the quality of our volunteers as well as the warmth of the welcome they provide to visitors from other countries. Organisers of the World Police and Fire Games in 2013 described them as the friendliest
Games they had ever run while the R&A said the volunteers at the 148th Open at Portrush were second to none.
“People from Northern Ireland are naturally welcoming and friendly, and we want people coming here to have a really good experience.
“From the perspective of our volunteers, we want to ensure their experience is meaningful and enjoyable.
Training will be given, and you will be fully supported
by the Volunteer Now team.”
The One Young World community has grown to a network of over 13,500 Ambassadors, whose projects have gone on to impact 35.8 million people worldwide.
Following the opening ceremony, which will take place at the SSE Arena, delegates and returning Ambassadors will spend three days at the awardwinning ICC Belfast for an action-packed agenda of
speeches, panels, workshops and networking events. Positions will be available from Saturday September 30 until Friday October 6; however, volunteers may be required to work past these dates. Applicants must be over 18, be fluent in English (written and spoken), flexible, reliable, friendly and polite.

Templemore Baths reopens following £17 million redevelopment
A new visitor centre and state-of-the-art leisure and spa facilities has opened at Templemore Baths following a £17 million project to restore and expand the historic Victorian building.
The interior has been repurposed into an interactive visitor centre focusing on the heritage of the much-loved local landmark, telling the story of its former function as public baths and swimming
pool. Many of its original features have been sympathetically restored including the ‘major pool’ which will be fully operational again, and the old slipper baths.
The former courtyard area has been transformed into a café within an attractive new atrium, featuring the original Victorian fountain which has been restored as its centrepiece.
A newly built 28,000 square foot extension has more than doubled the building’s footprint. It includes modern leisure facilities including a 25m sixlane swimming pool with spectator seating, an 80-station gym, spa facilities and changing rooms. The £17 million
redevelopment of Templemore Baths was funded by Belfast City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project was also made possible thanks to the transfer of the former Templemore Avenue
Hospital site from the Department for Communities to Belfast City Council.
Angela Lavin, Senior Investment Manager at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players we have invested £5 million to see the restoration and redevelopment of the original Templemore Baths.
“The impressive 130-year-old Victorian building lives long in people’s memories and its social history from Friday night baths straight from the shipyard to learning to swim in the minor pool has been captured in the
bath house’s heritage centre.
“Its restoration and sustainable construction has sympathetically blended old with new as materials were reused rather than replaced and the workforce shared and developed new heritage skills during the restoration of heritage features.”
The leisure facilities at Templemore will be managed by social enterprise GLL and the new visitor attraction will be run by EastSide Partnership on behalf of Belfast City Council. For more information, visit: www. belfastcity.gov.uk/ templemorebaths

Mum wins Belfast Business Idea Award
A busy mum of three has been crowned this year’s Belfast Business Idea winner for her innovative range of plastic-free hair and skincare products for children.
Sarah McKegney pitched her Percy and Pop concept to judges at the finalists’ night, held on Tuesday 20 June, and received a £2,500 cash injection and support package worth over £3,000 to enable her to take her idea forward.
The Belfast Business Idea competition, organised by Belfast City Council, and supported by Danske Bank, Pacem, the Open University and the Innovation Factory, helps unearth, recognise and fast track the best business ideas in Belfast.
Sarah was one of five winning concepts selected by an independent panel of judges to pitch their ideas to
an audience at yesterday’s event.
Sarah explained how she came up with the concept for her own range of solid shampoo and conditioners, after she was unable to find natural, plastic-free alternatives for bathtime with her three young children, all aged under five. Her pitch was selected as the overall winner, following an audience vote.
“I am delighted to win this award. All of the finalists were outstanding, so it’s a real honour to have been chosen as the winner,” said Sarah.
“This package of support will be invaluable in
developing the next stage of our journey and we are really excited to see where we can take Percy and Pop, with the help and advice from a trusted support network. This initiative is a lifeline to budding entrepreneurs and a fantastic opportunity to springboard our business and we can’t wait to take our bathroom revolution to the next level!”
The four other business ideas chosen by the competition judges will also receive a support package worth over £3,000. They were: Ankit Goel – PropAI Ciara Doherty and Sinead Molloy – Shevron
Maebh Reynolds – GoPlugable Ryan Forde – Medical AI Systems (MAIS)
All five aspiring entrepreneurs also had the opportunity to hear from, and put questions to, Belfast-born businessman Alan Mahon, founder of Brewgooder, the UK’s fastest growing beer brand in 2022, who provided them with inspiration and advice on taking their business journeys forward.

Joolz Aer is the crème de la crème of the pushchair world
Our reporter reviews the latest childcare equipment. Having been through the baby journey three times now I have had my experiences of many prams on the market. Most recently for my third, and final child, I decided to get a Joolz Aer compact which I have to say is one
decision I do not regret. As most busy mums know, a trip with children can mean lots of baggage and minimal space in the car so an important element for me was to have a pram that was compact and easy to assemble. Having read review on the Joolz Aer I was confident that it would
fit my criteria and I was right! The pram is a compact and lightweight buggy from Dutch pushchair brand Joolz.
The company promises that the Aer is “more than just a buggy”, positioning it as a premium travel stroller – compact
enough to fit in an aeroplane overhead locker.
This is what I love most about it. I usually only have one hand free so it is amazing how much easier it makes my life.
I am one of those impatient people who ignores instructions at first to see if I can work things out – and the Aer was easy to set up. It is ready to go from the box, already folded, and I was surprised at how easy it was to open.
It really was a one-
hand, one-second opening buggy as the company boasts. Once I had opened it, I did the sensible thing and read the instructions.
They are concise and helpful to ensure you are aware of the Aer’s many features and how to use them.
In addition, the Joolz Aer is also aimed at the environmentally conscious as it uses sustainable fabric made from recycled plastic bottles, and, working with Tree Nation, Joolz plants a tree in its ‘Birth Forest’ in Columbia for each pushchair sold. Even the cardboard box it comes in has cut-outs to show how it can be recycled into an aeroplane for your youngster.
I guarantee you if you opt for a Joolz Aer pram you will not be disappointed.

Have you planned your summer c H ildcare?
With brighter nights upon us, many working parents are starting to think about their summer childcare plans.
Many parents will rely on formal childcaresuch as day nurseries, childminders or summer schemes - to cover the time that children would normally spend in school.
This additional childcare can put a significant strain on household finances, this year more than ever as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.
Don’t let cost prevent you from exploring an option
There is help available with the cost of registered childcare, which can include some summer schemes, as well as year round providers such as registered childminders, out of school clubs and day nurseries. For example, parents may use Universal Credit, Tax-
Free Childcare, Childcare Vouchers or Tax Credits to help meet their bills.
Ahead of the summer now is a good time to make sure your family is receiving all the financial support you are entitled to.
Increased support with childcare costs through Universal Credit
In the Spring budget the Chancellor announced an increase in support for childcare costs through Universal Credit that applies for families across the UK from summer 2023.
The maximum support that can be received towards childcare costs from this summer onwards will be £951 per month for one child and £1630 for two or more children. This represents an increase
of 47% over the current maximum support.
Finding suitable childcare
The Family Support NI website www. familysupportni.gov. uk is a key resource for families looking for registered childcare and includes a search function for all registered childcare providers across Northern Ireland.
Local councils and
the Education Authority may also provide additional information over the coming months regarding the summer schemes that they are running for school age children.
Alternative working arrangements
In order to manage holiday childcare parents often need to request additional time off, paid or unpaid, or request to
change their working pattern.
Flexible working arrangements can take various forms for example part-time working, compressed hours (working your agreed hours over fewer days), job sharing or term-time only working. Discuss these options with your employer to try and find an arrangement that suits you both.
Gibb Roofing & Chimney Specialists Have Got You Covered!
Gibb Roofing & Chimney Specialists are a family-run business that has been established since 1982. The business is run by David Gibb who has been roofing for over 35 years.
They offer top-quality chimney and roof repair, installation and maintenance services to domestic and commercial customers all over Belfast, Bangor and beyond! They also specialize in the repair and installation of uPVC fascias, soffits and guttering. The Gibb Roofing office in Belfast is run by Valerie who also knows a thing or two about your roofing needs! Valerie says that summer is an ideal time to assess if there are any issues with your roof or chimney before autumn and winter set in.
There are several ways to know if there is an issue with your roof or chimney. Here are some signs you can look out for:
Missing grouting: This may show itself through visible cracks in the mortar joint or even algae growing in its place.
Poor condition of the chimney: If it’s started to disintegrate, its structure may need repairing.
Moisture ingress in your attic: Any gaps in your roof could help rainwater find its way into your property . In order to view the chimney you will need an inspection from the roof. While on the roof you want to look for damaged mortar joints. These will
be located between the masonry of the chimney and allow moisture to enter the bricks. Moisture will cause the bricks to expand, contract and enlarge the cracks. If you notice any of these signs, it would be wise to seek the assistance of a professional from Gibb Roofing!
Some of the most common roof repair problems homeowners encounter include damaged roof vents, leaking roofs, hail damage, damaged flashing, pooled water and clogged or damaged gutters or fascia. Other common types of roof repairs include missing/ damaged tiles, leaky flashings (especially against chimneys), damage caused by rodents, birds or even tree rub. Of Course
Gibb Roofind can also help with installation of your new roof and/or chimney on new build or renovation projects.
Over the years, Gibb Roofing has carried out thousands of jobs and has many satisfied customers.

Celebrating 25 years of t he n umber h ouse!
Business owner Jennifer Dunseath looks back on 25 years and counting
When I set up working from home all those years ago I never
imagined I’d build a successful business that would still be thriving
25 years later! I was delighted in the first year to open an office just off Princes Street in Edinburgh, even more delighted to take over the whole floor of the building within a few years and have 13 employees! I returned to N Ireland 10 years ago to raise my family and technology made remote working possible (so I had plenty of practice working from home before we were all forced to do it!)
It doesn’t matter what sort of business you’re in, you still need to keep your books, so the variety of types of businesses I’ve been involved with is huge.
It’s been an amazing journey and I’ve worked with some inspiring clients along the way, in fact I’m still with some of them 25 years later!
It was a tough start, being a female entrepreneur, but the quality of our work spoke for itself, so we’ve never
had to advertise!
Running my own business with my own team, as well has working with so many industries has given me good insight into how to support my clients. Gut instinct is invaluable for running a business, but good reliable regular financial reports gives you the facts to help you build success.
I’ve built my business on three common foundations – accuracy, trust and plain
language. When I first started out I was given a piece of advice that I still stand by today ‘always do what you say you’re going to do’, it’s a simple phrase, but I feel it’s the key to success, for any business.

Dog walkers encouraged to take the lead at NI Water sites
NI Water is appealing to the public to take care of their dog and take the lead when visiting any of its beauty spots.
NI Water is proud to host visitors to many of these sites. However, visitors are reminded that the policy across all NI Water sites is to keep dogs on leads at all times. This is to ensure the safety of both your pets and local wildlife.
Many sites owned
by NI Water, such as areas of the Mourne Mountains and the Garron Plateau, are also used by local farmers to graze livestock.
Rebecca Allen, Catchment Officer explains: “Often the presence of a dog is enough to spook a sheep and cause it to harm itself in an attempt to get to safety. If a dog is found to be worrying sheep, its owners may face a fine of up to £1000 if found guilty of the offence.
“Dogs can also worry cattle and unknowingly carry bacteria into the area, which affects cattle health. We ask that all visitors to NI Water lands follow the Countryside Code for Northern Ireland and keep dogs on leads at all times and bag and bin all dog waste.
Unfortunately, in the past week there has been a tragic incident of a sheep dying as a result of a dog attack on our land, and this is just sad and unacceptable.
“Our countryside
areas also provide important habitat for a diverse range of wildlife including rare breeding birds. Keeping your dog on a lead keeps our wildlife safe and your dog safe and happy too.”
NI Water thanks all our visitors who keep their dogs on leads when enjoying the countryside. Check with Dog Friendly NI for a list of dog parks suitable for off lead exercise.

What Fruits are best
Here are some safe options.
Apples Remove the core and the seeds and you’ve got a great fruit snack ready for your dog to enjoy. Apples are high in vitamins A and C, and there’s a good amount of fibre in each serving, making it one of the best types of fruit to offer to your dog.
Do bear in mind that apple seeds contain a tiny amount of cyanide which is toxic to your pet (and to humans, but the quantity is too small for us to worry about). Make sure you remove the seeds and cut the apple into small pieces your dog can easily handle. It’s important not to feed too large chunks, as they could be a choking hazard for your pet.
Bananas
When we’re considering what fruits are good for dogs, many of us think of bananas straight away. Containing a fantastic range of nutrients from potassium to fibre and vitamins, bananas make a great treat for humans and dogs alike. However, they’re also high
for dogs to eat?
in sugar which means it’s best to only give your pet a little bit at once, and just very occasionally as a reward for those really good deeds. Keep the banana peel out of their reach though, as it can be difficult for canine stomachs to digest. Chop the fruit up into bitesized pieces for your pup to enjoy.
Mango
Another sweet treat, perfect for summer days, mango can be enjoyed by our canine friends too. But don’t forget to remove the hard pit before offering it to your pet. It’s also best to peel off the skin, as this can be a bit hard to digest. Cut the fruit into bitesized pieces and offer it in moderation to your canine friend as a delicious treat.
Pears
Bursting with vitamins
C and K plus lots of fibre, pears are one of the best ‘five a day’ choices for us humans. When it comes to what fruits are good for dogs, pears are on the safe and nutritious list for our pets too. Remove the seeds,
cut the fruit into bite-sized chunks and let your dog dig in.
Strawberries
These red little berries are a favourite in many households and if dogs are present, they might develop a fondness for this summer fruit too. The good news is that strawberries have no toxic substances that dog owners should worry about. But their sugar content can create health problems if this fruit ends up on your dog’s menu too often. Particularly if your dog is small, it’s worth cutting these fruits up into little pieces to minimise the risk of choking. Find out more about how to feed strawberries to your dog in our guide.

David Graham is the current general manager of Linfield Football Club having replaced Pat Fenlon in November 2022.
The 36 year old has outlined his ambitions to grow Linfield, both on and off the field.
Watermelon
Watermelon, minus the rind and the seeds, is another fruit you can safely offer to you dog. Plus, it’s over 90% water, making it a tasty source of extra hydration in those hot summer months. Did we mention it’s also packed with potassium and vitamins? Offer watermelon to your pet in two or three bite-sized chunks and watch them enjoy this refreshing treat.
Always remember that if you’re in any doubt over what fruits your dog can eat, it’s best to check with your vet, especially if your dog is overweight, suffering from diabetes or a particular digestive problem.
He told EDA Media;
“We already have the best academy in NI. We regularly send graduates to England and Scotland with five former players in the NI squad. At Linfield, we expect to win. Players, staff and fans are united in the demand for success. We have made several key signings and hope that [new signing] Matthew Fitzpatrick will score goals – he is a much needed addition to the squad.”
Before coming to Linfield Graham served previously as a Special Adviser at Stormont, Senior Parliamentary Aide at Westminster and then Director of
communications at Rangers Football Club.
So far Graham is enjoying the challenges of his new role. He says: “No two days are the same. There is plenty of variety in the role. Aspects include football administration, building commercial partnerships and revenue, financial analysis as well as leading on the strategic direction of the club.”
Linfield have won 56 League titles since 1886, a world record.
David says: “Windsor Park is shared with the National team so we are very blessed to have a newly re-laid pitch and excellent training facilities as well as plans for an extended academy. We have also recently
appointed a new social media and marketing officer who is driving our brand forward. We are currently undertaking a digital transformation and hope to see this reap rewards for our business and to the benefit of club supporters.”
Linfield Football Club was founded in 1886 as Linfield Athletic Club and
in 1905 moved into their current home of Windsor Park. The club’s badge displays Windsor Castle, in reference to the ground’s namesake. Linfield Football Club provide individual hospitality packages as well as group bookings. Please contact the club so that they can cater for your individual needs.

Light Up yo U r oU tdoor Space
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy your outdoor space, whether it’s for relaxing, entertaining, or gardening.
But when the sun goes down, you don’t have to go inside.
With the right outdoor lighting, you can create a warm, inviting, and stylish atmosphere that extends your living space and enhances your home’s curb appeal.
There are many outdoor lighting options and methods to choose from, depending on your budget, style, and needs. Here are some of the best outdoor lighting trends for summer 2023 that will help you illuminate your backyard, patio, driveway, and garden.
Smart Garden Lights
If you want to control your outdoor lights remotely, smart garden lights are the way to go. These lights can be solar-powered, which means they are eco-friendly and costeffective. You can also adjust the brightness, colour, and timing of your lights using an app or a voice assistant.
Smart garden lights
can help you highlight specific plants or features in your garden, or create different moods for different occasions.
Hardscape Lighting
Hardscape lighting refers to lights that are installed on or in hard surfaces, such as stairs, pillars, walkways, and edging. These lights can provide safety and security by illuminating dark areas, but they can also add some flair and drama to your landscape. Hardscape lighting can be used to accentuate sculptures, fountains, or other ornaments in your backyard.
Patio String Lights
String lights are a classic and versatile option for outdoor lighting. They can be hung from the roof, poles, trees, or railings around your patio or deck. They can also be wrapped around columns, pergolas, or trellises. String lights can create a cosy and romantic atmosphere
for your outdoor space, with a variety of shapes, sizes, colours, and styles to choose from.
Solar-Powered
Bollard Lights
Bollard lights are tall and slender lights that are usually placed along pathways, driveways, or entrances. They can provide visibility and guidance for your guests, as well as add some elegance and sophistication to your
home’s exterior. Solarpowered bollard lights are a great option if you want to save energy and money. They charge during the day and turn on automatically at night.
Decorative Outdoor Lanterns
Lanterns are another popular and timeless choice for outdoor lighting. They can be hung from hooks, branches, or wires, or placed on tables, floors, or steps. Lanterns can add some charm
and character to your outdoor space, with a range of materials, shapes, colours, and patterns to suit any style. Lanterns can also be battery-powered or solar-powered for convenience and sustainability.
Outdoor lighting is not only functional but also fun and creative. Have fun transforming your outdoor space into a magical and memorable place that you and your family will love this summer!

TOO MUCH EXPOSURE TO SUN CAN CAUSE LONG TERM EYE PROBLEMS
Top tips to keep eyes safe this summer.
Most of us know we need to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, but
many people in Northern Ireland don’t know that our eyes are also very vulnerable
to damage from the sun. Even those that don’t regularly go on holiday abroad could be at risk, as sunlight in the UK can cause our eyes damage, especially in summer.
Excessive exposure to the sun can cause a painful sunburn-like inflammation of the cornea at the front of the eye, which can greatly increase the risk of developing more serious, even sight-threatening, conditions in the future, such as cataracts, growths on the eyes, or even blindness.
The sun’s damaging power is also increased by glare, which occurs when UV rays are intensified as they reflect off shiny surfaces such as glass or water.
It may not always be obvious when you are being exposed to too much sunlight. One simple rule of thumb to follow; if you are looking anywhere near
the sun and it is causing any discomfort to the eyes such as making your squint, you are being overexposed.
Stuart Douglas, Ophthalmic Optician at Specsavers Newtownards, says, “Excessive sun exposure can cause irreversible damage to your eyesight and can increase the risk of blindness. The right sunglasses can protect the eyes by filtering UV light from the eyes –however, many people still choose a cosmetic pair over safety, which may cause the pupil to dilate, increasing the amount of UV light filtering into the eyes. Now people can have the best of both.”
The risk of eye problems caused by the sun can be reduced by polarised lenses, which use a layer of iodine crystals to absorb glare.
8 Top Tips from Specsavers to keep your eyes safe this summer
1. Always check sunglasses comply with BSEN 1836: 1997 or bear the CE kite mark and are marked UV 400.
2. Consider investing in photochromic lenses that adapt to light changes, darkening in bright light. Alternatively, get prescription lenses tinted in conjunction with a UV blocking filter to minimise the amount of light and UV rays that reach your eyes.
3. Polarised lenses can decrease the amount of glare which can dazzle and strain your vision; particularly useful when you are by the pool or taking part in outdoor sports.
4. The larger the lens, the more protection for your eyes.
5. Contact lenses offering UV protection do not cover the whole area of your eye, so should be worn with sunglasses.
6. Make sure your
sunglasses fit correctly.
7. If you are going on holiday and have prescription sunglasses, take your optician’s phone number with you – therefore if your sunglasses break, your optician can send your prescription to an optician near you so that you can get new glasses abroad,
8. And most importantly, never look directly into the sun, even when wearing sunglasses.
However, the good
news is you don’t have to sacrifice style for safety when it comes to sunglasses. Whether you are looking for a classic round, a statement square, glamorous cat-eye, striking aviator or something completely avant-garde
– Specsavers has a huge range of popular silhouettes, unique styles and designer brands of prescription sunglasses for you to best protect your eyes in style.
Yuen Sum Cheung, Head of Frames Development
at Specsavers said, “This summer, protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays with Specsavers’ range of fashionable prescription sunglasses, helping you to look great in the sun all summer long.”
If you’re worried about your eye health, visit your GP or call your Specsavers store to make an appointment; regular eye tests can help pick up any potential eye health issues early.

up to 150 people for private functions such as weddings, funerals, christenings, birthdays, engagements and much more.”
The bar and restaurant opens daily from 10am and has a range of teas, coffee and traybakes available for those looking for something light.
“We are also happy to welcome people to the bar where they can try out our range of cocktails and selection of lagers, ciders, spirits and wines” added Philip.

Gilmore Funeral Directors recently expanded their Comber premises to include the Bank Building at 1 Killinchy Street. Reuniting the former Danske Bank with Gilmores’ original premises has not only created a beautiful space to serve families’ needs, it has sympathetically restored one of Comber’s most iconic properties. The renovation has considerably increased Gilmores’ capacity to provide a bright and tranquil resting and celebration space in the heart of the town.
Since its establishment in 1987, GFD has become integral to community life on The Square in Comber, a principle central to the vision of founder Ken Gilmore, Dip NAFD, his staff and his children who support him in serving the community.
“Our desire has always been that our family is
there to look after grieving families when they are in greatest need,” says Ken Gilmore. “We understand that the loss of a loved one is the most difficult experience we endure in life. As an independent, family-run business, we are ideally placed to offer a bespoke service and accommodate all the wishes of those who need our assistance.”
In the 35 years since Ken, assisted by his father Melville, established GFD, he has seen much change. Keen to provide a nondenominational space in which services could be held by those of any faith or none, Ken built a service room which seats around 120 people.
Alongside catering for traditional church services, Gilmores now facilitate many services in their own premises. You can also count on the compassionate and dedicated team at GFD for gracefully designed memorial and head stones. Whatever your requirements, they can assist you in selecting a fitting memorial for your loved one.
In addition, Ken provides a range of funeral services that include bereavement support, repatriation from any country, cremation and burial, along with facilitating traditional requirements such as service sheets, flowers, organising donations and transportation. Ken has also noticed throughout his career the increase in those taking out funeral plans to reduce the emotional and financial burden on loved ones after they’re gone. A range of funeral plans, offered
through Golden Charter, can be tailored to the specific desires and requirements of the individual, suiting every budget. Further, by investing in a prepaid funeral plan, you can have complete peace of mind knowing your funeral will take place according to your wishes. If Gilmore Funeral Directors Ltd can help you at all, or if you’d like more information, please call 028 9187 2949, visit the website at www.gilmorefuneraldirectors.co.uk or find them on Facebook.

FEW DRIVERS HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Less than a quarter of UK drivers say they have a good understanding of electric vehicles, according to new research conducted by PEUGEOT UK.
In a recent survey of 2,000 UK motorists*, just 23% rate their understanding of electric vehicles as good or excellent, while 38% believe that their knowledge is poor or very poor. This is despite the fact that there are now almost 1.1 million electrified vehicles on UK roads** as the country moves towards the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars.
PEUGEOT UK’s latest research reveals significant gaps in the public’s understanding of electric vehicles, with less than half being aware that battery electric vehicles emit zero tailpipe emissions. A surprising 12% also believe that plugin hybrid cars and electric
cars are exactly the same type of vehicle.
Less than a third of respondents know that electric models such as the new PEUGEOT e-2008 can be charged from 0-80% in just 30 minutes from a 100kW rapid charger.
There is also misunderstanding around the electric vehicle charging network, with 70% of respondents saying they find the way different providers operate to be confusing.
The same percentage also finds the language surrounding electric vehicle power, battery capacity and efficiency difficult to understand, with only 31% aware that Kilowatt Hours (kWh) is the unit used to measure
NEARLY HALF OF NI DRIVERS THINK POLICE WON’T CATCH THEM ON THE PHONE
New government data analysed by CompareNI.com has found that over half of NI drivers have used their phone while driving.
Although the overall number of mobile phone offences in Northern Ireland is decreasing year on year, new data covering 2021/2022 has found that over half of NI drivers (58%), have used their phone in some capacity while driving a car.* This is a slight decrease from the year before when 64% of drivers admitted to the same thing.
Nearly half of all respondents (46%), believed that drivers were not likely to be stopped by police for using their hand-
held mobile phone while driving. Males in general were shown to be the most likely to commit mobile offences while driving, with a higher percentage than females believing they wouldn’t get caught (48%).
Making a hands-free call accounted for the highest usage in a moving (49%) or stationary vehicle (47%), while 6% of drivers admitted to making a handheld call while driving.
Older drivers were identified as the group who were least likely to use
their phone while driving with just under a third (30%) of those aged 65 or over admitting to having done so in the last 12 months.
Using a mobile phone at any time while driving is illegal. The Highway Code NI states that before setting off on a journey drivers should make sure they have switched off their mobile phones.
It also states that drivers must not use a hand-held mobile phone, or similar device, when it is unsafe or impractical to stop, except
to call 999 in a genuine emergency.
Drivers should also avoid using hands-free phones while driving as it can cause significant distraction and increase the risk of crashing. Using a hands-free phone while driving may still be breaking the law as drivers must be in full control of the vehicle at all times.
In 2022 there were 1,762 mobile phone offences recorded by the PSNI.** Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon policing district recorded the largest

battery capacity in EVs.
In contrast, when asked which car powertrain they have the best understanding of, 67% cited petrol and diesel, compared to just 7% who chose electric powertrains.
Generation gap
The research also reveals that young people are more likely to think they have a strong understanding of electric vehicles, with 58% of 18-24-year-olds rating their knowledge as good or excellent. Meanwhile, half of those over 65 rate their understanding of electric vehicles as poor or very poor.
Nearly half (46%) of 18-24-year-olds correctly selected ‘Miles per kWh’ as the unit commonly used to measure efficiency in
electric vehicles, compared to just 20% of over 65s. When it comes to charging, 46% of 18-24-year-olds correctly stated that an electric car can be charged to 80% in as little as half an hour, compared to 23% of over 65s. And 50% of 18-24-year-olds said it was true that in some UK cities, electric vehicle drivers do not have to pay for parking when charging, compared to 28% of over 65s.
Young people’s knowledge extends to other types of electric vehicles too, with 64% of 18-24-year-olds aware that electric vans are eligible for a UK government grant – a fact known by just 26% of those over 65.
number of mobile phone offences (344) in 2022, while the highest rate (per 10,000 people aged 16+) was reported in Lisburn and Castlereagh with 21.
Ards and North Down ranked lowest in both measures, with 35 detections which is equivalent to 3 per 10,000 people aged 16+.
Mid and East Antrim had the second lowest rate in Northern Ireland with 7 per 10,000 people 16+, closely followed by Causeway Coast and Glens with 8.

Planning to landscape your garden?
When landscaping your garden, there are several things you should consider. Here are just a few of them:
Begin by defining how your garden will be used. Common uses for outdoor spaces include entertaining, cooking

Best Ways to Protect Your Home
Home security is a vital concern for many homeowners who want to keep their family and belongings safe from intruders, burglars, and other threats.
Fortunately, there are many ways to protect your home from unwanted visitors, ranging from simple habits to advanced devices. Here are some of the best ways to protect your home that you might want to consider.
Lock Your Doors and Windows
One of the most basic and effective ways to protect your home is to lock your doors and windows whenever you leave or go to bed. Use sturdy locks that can resist picking, bumping, or kicking, such as grade 1 or grade 2 deadbolts that penetrate the door frame. For windows, use key locks or window stops that prevent them from opening more than a few inches. You can also reinforce your windows with safety or shatterproof glass, bars, grates, or metal bars.
Install a Security System
A security system is a great way to deter and detect intruders, as well as alert you and the authorities in case of a break-in. A security system can include various components, such as alarms, cameras, motion sensors,
door and window contacts, and smart locks. You can choose a professional or DIY system, depending on your budget and preferences. Some systems also offer remote monitoring and control via smartphone apps.
Use Smart Lighting
Lighting is another important factor in home security, as it can make your home look occupied and discourage intruders from hiding in the dark. You can use smart lighting devices that can be programmed to turn on and off at certain times or triggered by motion or sound. You can also use solar-powered or battery-operated outdoor lights that can illuminate your driveway, garden, or entryway.
Secure Your Garage
Your garage is not only a place to store your car and tools, but also a potential entry point for intruders. To secure your garage, make sure you lock the door that leads to your house, as well as the garage door itself. You can also use a smart
garage door opener that can be controlled remotely or notify you if the door is left open. Additionally, you can cover or frost your garage windows to prevent thieves from seeing what’s inside.
Be Careful with Spare
Keys
Many people hide spare keys under doormats, flower pots, or rocks in case they lose or forget their main keys. However, this is also an easy way for intruders to access your home without breaking anything. Instead of hiding spare keys outside, you can use a wall-mounted key safe that requires a combination code to open. You can also give spare keys to trusted neighbours or friends who live nearby. These are just some of the best ways to protect your home that you can try. By following these tips, you can improve your home’s security and peace of mind. Remember that home security is not a onetime thing, but an ongoing process that requires regular maintenance and updates.

Summer Bar B eque Guide relax outof-door S into the evenin G
With the sun beating down and heat slowly rising, it is clear to see that barbeque season has finally arrived. However, if you are thinking of investing in a barbeque, there is a great deal to consider.
Prices for barbeques can range from £10 to the multiple thousands and the extensive range has something to cater for every possible need. Depending on the number of grills, number of additional features and quality of its production –there is a lot to consider when choosing your perfect barbeque.
The timeless debate which has been had over many a family barbeque once again raises it’s head on this occasion –gas or charcoal?
In many cases your budget might well dictate your choice for you as charcoal barbeques tend to be significantly more cost effective. For those barbeque stalwarts,
nothing will compare to a traditional charcoal barbeque and using a gas equivalent is as good as cheating. It is also widely held that the taste from cooking on a charcoal barbeque is distinctive and cannot be reproduced by a modern gas counterpart.
Charcoal does, however, take a considerable length of time to heat up whereas with gas, you can begin cooking almost immediately –providing an obvious advantage. For the sheer convenience of instantaneous cooking, gas barbeques are hard to beat.
In terms of running costs, with gas barbeques
you will often ‘rent’ a cylinder and pay for each refill of gas that you require - With charcoal however, costs approximately £15 for a 10kg bag which will serve up to three medium
barbeques.
Other factors that should be considered include if the barbeque has a lid, the number of people you are likely to be cooking for and what type of food you intend
to be cooking.
Buying a barbeque with a lid brings a degree of versatility to your barbequing that is not otherwise available. It grants you far greater control over the heat
and allows you to cook food more thoroughly as opposed to burning the outside whilst leaving the inside underdone. If you are sticking to traditional burgers and sausages then perhaps charcoal is for you, however if you wish to branch out and cook chicken or pork then gas may be the safest option.
If you have a large family or intend on cooking for guests on a regular basis, it might be worth investing in a gas barbeque as it will give you the reliability and accuracy that is required when hosting for numerous guests. It also brings unrivalled convenience that allows its owner to mingle freely knowing that the cooking
