Public artwork unveiled at o rangefield Park to raise awareness of mental health
A public artwork was unveiled at Orangefield Park Pavilion recently as part of a special project with young men in the Orangefield area in east Belfast to raise awareness of mental health.
Supported by Council and Eastside Greenways, East Belfast Alternatives worked with the group of 12 to develop the artwork in memory of their friend, Adam (Woods), who passed away last year, aged 21.
Collaborative working the way forward!
Collaborative working amongst partners of the Stadium Community Benefits Initiative (SCBI) is encouraging shared learning and positive engagement amongst sporting codes across Belfast.
Supported by Belfast City Council, the Department for Communities, the Irish Football Association and Antrim GAA, Gaelfast, the SCBI is a 10-year programme focusing on maximising the potential of the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park and future Casement Park development to improve the lives of residents and future generations.
As well as delivering individual programmes, partners have engaged in shared activities in schools and communities across the city.
This way of working has generated real success with engagement and interest in the SCBI programme growing, demonstrating an appetite for shared learning across all sports.
This collaborative approach to working amongst partners was most recently showcased at the SCBI Sports Conference 2023 held in the National Football Stadium Windsor Park. There was an overwhelming positive response to the conference with attendees’ reflecting on the collaborative approach to learning across sporting codes.
In the last year alone the IFA and Gaelfast delivered 2629 sessions, targeting many different groups including older people and those with a disability or learning difficulty. The delivery of those sessions resulted in nearly 16,120 people participating in sport. For more info on the SCBI programme visit www. belfastcity.gov.uk/SCBI
The young men produced the artwork which they felt was a fitting tribute to their friend as well as celebrate his work as a local artist.
The artwork at the pavilion has a poignant message ‘For every
dark night there’s a brighter day’.
It is hoped it will inspire and give comfort to people struggling with their mental health and promote mental health awareness among young people who use
the park. The artwork was unveiled at a special event recently at Orangefield Park attended by members of Adam’s family with his mum Lynda painting the final patch of the artwork.

Fraser Millar Commissions Painting in Aid of Local Mental Health Charities
NORTHERN Ireland’s leading Passivhaus developer, Fraser Millar, has recently commissioned a unique and exclusive painting by local artists Paul Doran and Niall Conlon, as part of their ongoing ‘Minding Minds Together’ project and exhibition.
The painting has been commissioned to reflect the work done by Jake McBride at his East Belfast gym, Hooked Belfast. Jake is a tireless campaigner for mental health and the painting honours the benefits of boxing training in managing mental wellbeing.
Dedicated to not only sustainable homes but also sustainable minds; Fraser Millar is proud to be supporting this worthwhile project which will help to raise awareness and necessary funds for the mental health crisis that effects so many throughout Northern Ireland.
Studies have continually shown that Northern Ireland has the highest suicide rate in the United Kingdom, ranking it among the top 15 countries in the world.
It also has the highest rates of post-traumatic stress disorder in the world, ahead of many regions in the Middle East which have also been affected by war.
These statistics alone speak volumes of the ongoing issues surrounding poor mental health in Northern Ireland.
As a well-established property developer in the region, in 2019 Fraser Millar shifted their business
model to developing only
Passivhaus Certified homes, offering homeowners, a cleaner and healthier way of living. Having grown up in Northern Ireland, David Millar is aware of the detrimental impact that it has had on our local communities and as a family firm they recognise that action needs to be taken to offer more help and support for those who need it.
David Millar, the managing director of Fraser Millar, spoke about their contribution to the project:
“When Paul and Niall told me about the project, I immediately thought about the connection with Jake McBride’s gym, Hooked Belfast, and we decided to commission a piece of art for the exhibition to reflect the mental health benefits of boxing training. The connection with Jake’s gym and Fraser Millar is strong with directors, employees, friends and family all enjoying the mental and physical benefits of training at Hooked and we were only too happy to get involved.
It’s a very worthwhile cause and Fraser Millar is delighted to be a part of it.”
Fraser Millar’s involvement in the ‘Minding
Minds Together’ project and exhibition will be instrumental in helping to raise much needed funds for charities working to help mental wellbeing within the local community.
Artist Niall Conlon said, “We are so grateful to David Millar of Fraser Millar for commissioning this unique painting to support our ‘Minding Minds Together’ project and exhibition to help raise vital funds for mental health charities across Northern Ireland. It has meant the world to us to receive extremely generous support from such an
inspiring and forward thinking company.” The exhibition recently took place at Ross’ Auctioneers. Fraser Millar’s commissioned painting was on display along with a series of collaborative paintings by local community groups, Wave Trauma Centre and Queen’s University Belfast medical students. 50 per cent of the proceeds were donated directly to local mental health charities in Northern Ireland. The finished piece of artwork will now become a permanent fixture in Jake McBride’s new boxing gym, ‘Hooked Belfast’.

Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Michelle Kelly joined 36 community groups from across Belfast, recently, as they enjoyed a day out at Titanic Belfast and SS Nomadic, as part of Local Community Day.
Maritime Belfast Trust, the charity set up to preserve and promote Belfast’s maritime and industrial heritage, including the development of Titanic Belfast, worked in collaboration with Titanic Belfast to provide 500 complimentary tickets to the reimagined Titanic Experience. The community groups came from Bloomfield Community Association, Sailortown Regeneration, Oldpark and Ardoyne Parent and Children Group, South Belfast Boat and Kayak Club, Ligoniel Healthy Living Centre, Colin Neighbourhood Partnership, Forward South, Extern and Belfast City of Sanctuary. Kerrie Sweeney,
Chief Executive of Maritime Belfast Trust said: “We have delivered six Local Community Day initiatives since 2016, welcoming over 3,000 people from 210 groups across the north, south, east and west of the city. The event sees the building opened up to a range of neighbourhood communities, charities and not-forprofit organisations, allowing visitors to enjoy the experience who may not
otherwise get the chance to visit Titanic Belfast.”
“As part of the Titanic Belfast Gallery Refreshment Fund, Maritime Belfast Trust and Titanic Belfast Limited (owner and operator) have recently invested £4.5 million into refurbishing the final galleries, adding a new ‘wow’ experience, which incorporates unique and breathtaking artefacts. This investment underpins Maritime Belfast’s wider aspirations
to deliver a vibrant, connected, and animated heritage waterfront for local people and visitors to enjoy. As part of the day guests were able to explore the re-imagined Titanic Experience, as well as having the opportunity to go on board SS Nomadic.”
Ms Graham from Oldpark and Ardoyne Community Group said: “We were so excited to be invited down to Local Community Day. We had not been since the attraction opened over 10 years ago and it was great to see the new reimagined experience.”
Maritime Belfast Trust is committed to developing Belfast’s waterfront as a place for everyone to enjoy, and is currently
working with Belfast City Council, Belfast Harbour, Titanic Quarter Limited and key government departments to scope how the waterfront can fully realise its potential as a connected, vibrant corridor linking with key destinations, neighbourhood communities and the city centre. Local Community Day also provided an opportunity for the groups to contribute ideas to develop initiatives for the future of Belfast’s iconic waterfront. Two S T ar S of T he e a ST!
Two women in Education, both from East Belfast, have been awarded the prestigious Iris Colvin Lifetime Achievement Award at a presentation luncheon in Parliament Buildings.
The award was set up by Women’s Forum NI in memory of Iris Colvin, O.B.E., a well-known figure in voluntary and community work over many years. She was also a former Chairperson and Honorary Member of Women’s Forum which is an “umbrella” body for women’s organisations.
Andrea Gourley was announced winner of the Education Category and Overall Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award 2023.
Andrea Gourley is a long-serving educationalist, working in East Belfast for 33 years. She was educated in East Belfast, attending Elmgrove Primary School and Bloomfield Collegiate School, (19791986), graduating from the University of Ulster in Music and Stranmillis College in Primary Education before attaining the Northern Ireland Professional Qualification for Headship. She began teaching in Orangefield Primary School, holding the role of Head of Music. She then moved to Strand Primary School as VP and then Principal.
She oversaw the amalgamation of a number of schools in the Sydenham area before being appointed as the first and current principal of the newly formed Victoria Park Primary School in 2008. She was also key in working towards the establishment of the new state-of-the art building which the school now resides.
The school has continued to grow in pupil numbers and to expand the facilities, this year, opening a new specialist Nurture Group on-site.
Mrs Gourley has already achieved a string of personal awards, including Families First NI Best Principal in 2019 and 2022, Mighty Women Award 2019 and an award for Outstanding Contribution to Education in East Belfast.
At the ceremony, a presentation was also made to the Overall Winner 2020, Rosemary Rainey, O.B.E. Due to the onset of Covid, the scheduled luncheon and presentation had to be cancelled at the time.
Rosemary Rainey is well-known in educational circles and beyond. She is a Board Member of the Education Authority,
the immediate Past Chairman of the Transferor Representatives’ Council, a former Chairman of Belfast Education and Library Board and the current Chairman of the Board of Governors of Grosvenor Grammar School.
She has lived in East Belfast all her life, attending Bloomfield Collegiate School (19491963) and graduating in English and Latin from Queen’s University Belfast.
She taught in Orangefield Girls’ School and later in Orangefield High School where she was Senior Teacher and Head of
English.
She was awarded the O.B.E. for services to Education in Northern Ireland in December 2011.
Both women believe in service to others and making a difference to the lives of others. They believe in giving back. The motto of the City of Belfast – pro tanto quid retribuamus –“For so much, what can / shall we give in return?” is so good in summing up their philosophy of life.
Congratulations to both of them. They are a credit to their alma mater, Bloomfield Collegiate School, and to East Belfast.

Habinteg Housing a ssociation t enants in b elfast to benefit from programmes to improve skills and wellbeing
Habinteg Housing Association (Ulster) has secured more than £9,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund to support community projects which will benefit tenants and their families across Northern Ireland.
Aiming to increase access for vulnerable and isolated tenants, Habinteg plans to implement initiatives to help improve health and wellbeing, increase skills and reduce living costs.
The housing association
will use the funding to co-ordinate six-week cookery programmes teaching participants how to cook healthy meals on a budget.
Each participant will be provided with ingredients costs and a utensils pack, including a slow cooker to ensure that they can continue to cook hearty, healthy meals for themselves and their families.
Habinteg will also be hosting six-weekly wellness courses promoting the five steps to wellbeing with the aim of improving mental wellbeing & physical health.
The events will be held in “snug hubs,” which are warm, dedicated spaces for tenants, across sites in Dungannon, Limavady, Enniskillen, Strabane, Derry-Londonderry, Coleraine, Ballycastle,
Belfast and Newry. There will also be online workshops for those who are unable to attend the face to face sessions encouraging participants from across the region to come together to build relationships.
Deborah Wooderson, Director of Homes and Communities, Habinteg Housing Association, said:
“As the cost-of-living crisis continues to put pressure on our tenants, improving the skills and wellbeing of our communities is a high priority for Habinteg and we’d like to thank National Lottery players for their support.
“Specific online and in-person workshops promoting steps that our tenants can take to improve their physical and mental wellbeing will
help to ensure the most isolated and vulnerable in our communities feel connected.
“The funds will also support our community
snug hubs where tenants can come to engage with their neighbours.
Developed during the winter months, when heating bills were
particularly high, the snug hubs have encouraged engagement within our communities and they will continue to run throughout the summer.”

New pla N ti N g boost at l eadhill p rimary s chool
The pupils of Leadhill Primary School have been getting really green-fingered, planting hedges, trees and plants to encourage pollinators.
The school were successful in their application to Live
Here Love Here for a grant to create a rich pollinator environment
in the school site, and were given £6500 to spend on plants and
equipment. The tree planting has begun and now the children are
excitedly awaiting the installation of a new school greenhouse! The children are on the look-out for new buds and blossom on the trees and an injection of colour into their flowerbeds and planters. With a range of fruit trees, bushes and plants and the beautiful smells of herbs and flowers, the school grounds are hopefully going to attract a rich variety of pollinators. The children have been learning about how pollinators are vital in helping our world to stay healthy. They are really excited about how the new plants and trees will help to boost the ecology of the school site and are helping to make
sure that all the new plants are cared-for and nurtured. As an Eco-School, the Eco-Committee have taken a lead in the
project and are working on creating a section on the school website devoted to celebration of all the environmental projects happening in
Leadhill. From planting and litter collections to recycling and energy conservation, the committee are kept really busy all the year round!

What do you call a flock of warblers? A chorus? Or a warble?
Over centuries people have given names, sometimes
A murder of crows.
A gaggle of geese. A charm of goldfinches (my favourite). But the question I ask about warblers is a wee bit tongue in cheek because we seldom see them in flocks. Yes, they must ‘flock together’ to some extent when they fly here every spring from southern Europe or Africa and return in late summer, but, at least while they’re here to breed, they live separate,
called collective nouns, to groups or flocks of birds.
territorial lives. There are many warbler species, but I’m only going to cover the three most common, those you’re most likely to hear, chiffchaff, willow warbler and blackcap.
And when I say ‘hear’ rather than ‘see’, that’s because they’re very good at not being seen. They’re small, and particularly chiffchaff and willow warbler plumage is a mix of muted green, brown and yellow,
enough to fade into the foliage of the woodland where they live. Even blackcaps, which, yes, do have a black cap (females have a brown one) are hard to spot.
But their songs and calls are, for me, the essential sounds of spring when trees are in leaf. Of course, I love the songs of robins, blackbirds and thrushes, often performed where we can see them, but warblers are something else, their
songs and calls echoing through woodland and waterside scrub as they proclaim their territory and seek females to join them.
I particularly love the chiffchaff song, even if it’s just pretty much a repetition of its name… chiffchaff, chiffchaff… because it carries such a long way. The willow warbler’s song is much more ‘musical’, a trilling descent, repeated over and over. But the star
is the blackcap, with a melodious song which is the reason for its alternative name, the nightingale of the north.
If you want to listen to their songs, they are
available at https:// www.british-birdsongs. uk/alphabetical/. Better still, get out into the countryside this spring and listen to them ‘live’.

A new era for Lisburn Hearing Centre
Lisburn Hearing Centre is under new management as Scottish audiologist, Colin I’Anson, has bought the business from founder and owner, David Parkinson.
David founded Lisburn Hearing in 2006, and the business has served the local community ever since.
New owner, Colin, qualified as a hearing aid audiologist in 2007 and has 16 years of experience working at House of Hearing in Edinburgh specialising in the fitting of bespoke hearing solutions and wax removal. Colin moved to Lisburn with his family in the summer of 2022 and began working part-time at Lisburn Hearing shortly after he arrived.
Colin said:
“It’s been great to be
made to feel so welcome and to get to meet so many people here in Lisburn. I was immediately impressed by the friendly professionalism of the team at Lisburn Hearing and really enjoyed the interaction with the customers. Being an audiologist is very rewarding as you get to meet so many people and you can make such a big difference to people’s hearing and quality of life.”
Colin took over Lisburn Hearing on 4th April and has no immediate plans to make major changes. “It’s really exciting to be taking over such a well established
and customer focussed business. I’m delighted that David has agreed to remain working on a part-time basis to assist us in a smooth transition, ensuring Lisburn Hearing customers and families always continue to receive a first class service from us. The company has been here in Lisburn providing a valuable service through thick and thin, throughout the pandemic, despite the arrival of large chains.
Providing a personal and consistent service continues to be our priority and this will continue to set us apart in the future.”
David says: “I know
Colin will continue with the ethos of the business that I started and will bring a breath of fresh air with his youthfulness and enthusiasm. He has an excellent understanding of the brilliant hearing aids available now, with additional benefits I couldn’t have imagined when I started in this business!”

Tax-Free Childcare can help working parents pay for registered childcare
Paying for childcare can be a significant expense for working parents. For many families, it can be more than the monthly mortgage or rent.
even though many do not realise this.
Childcare?
However, most working parents are entitled to financial support towards registered childcare costs,
Tax-Free Childcare is one of the forms of support available to help pay for registered childcare. While uptake of the scheme has previously been low in Northern Ireland, this is now growing and over the last year 30% more families have benefited from using Tax-Free Childcare. While a positive development, there are many more families who are still missing out on support they could be entitled to. Often, parents assume they are not entitled to financial support because they think their household earnings are too high, however this is usually not the case.
What is Tax-Free
The Tax-Free Childcare scheme is open to parents of children under the age of 12 (or age 17 for children with disabilities) allowing eligible working families to claim 20% of their registered childcare costs, up to £2,000 per child per year, or £4,000 for a child with a disability, from the Government. To claim Tax-Free Childcare, both parents need to be in employment (or one person in a single parent household), earning between £167 per week (equivalent to 16 hours working at the National Living Wage) and £100,000 per year each. So, for example, a household where each
parent is earning £95,000 (combined income of £190,000) would be eligible for support.
Tax-Free Childcare is also available to selfemployed parents (where eligible). Households where one parent is working, and the other parent is in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or certain disability benefits can also qualify.
Unlike some other forms of support the amount of savings a household has is not taken into account when determining if a parent is eligible for TaxFree Childcare.
Further information
As well as Tax-Free Childcare, there are other schemes which provide support with registered childcare costs (Universal
Credit, Childcare Vouchers and Tax Credits), which may be better for some families. Our team can help parents work out what
form of financial support is best for them. If you would like further advice on help with childcare costs contact our Family Benefits Advice Service

CHARITY CALLS ON PEOPLE TO HELP SAVE NATIVE FLORA
Plant conservation charity, True Harvest Seeds, is calling on people to donate to help raise the £200k needed by August 31st 2023 to save its seed bank.
Situated in Kilclief, the new structure will be purpose built to preserve the seed of the island of Ireland’s native flora in the event of de-habitation or climate change.
There are hundreds of native flowers and plants in NI and ROI and the seed bank exists both to preserve them and to research their
DNA. It is currently situated within a set of temporary structures that are reaching the end of their lifespan. True Harvest Seeds wishes to secure the future of the seed bank. To do so, the charity must raise funds by August 31st for a permanent structure to house its growing indigenous
seed collection. The organisation also wishes to further develop its native botanical gardens, to protect and showcase endangered and beautiful flora.
Debbie Gillies, CEO at True Harvest Seeds, says, “True Harvest Seeds is essentially a gene bank for our indigenous wild plants. We harness
the science of seed conservation to safeguard our native species for future generations.
“We preserve seeds collected from populations of wild plants of native origin in our seed bank and it is of the utmost importance that we are able to secure a permanent, purpose-built structure, to allow us to continue our work safely and effectively for the long term.
“The Seed Centre will be open to the public and the seeds in the seed bank can be withdrawn for restoration or research upon application. As a charity, True Harvest Seeds and its seed bank are owned by the people of NI and ROI for use now and long into the future, as seed collections can last for thousands of years in
deep storage.
“I would encourage donations from people across County Antrim to help us raise the £200k that is urgently needed in order to secure the site by August 31st.”
Debbie is accompanied by one other member of staff at True Harvest Seeds, along with seventeen dedicated volunteers who help with all aspects, from governance, to collecting, to growing and storing the seed.
Michael Thompson, Trustee and Marketing Director at True Harvest Seeds, adds, “Conserving endangered plant species is vital to the preservation of our ecosystems. Many plant species are currently facing extinction, both locally and globally, and it is vital for us to help protect them
before it is too late.
“One of the ways that we aim to achieve this at True Harvest Seeds is by seed banking and our members are working tirelessly to raise money to build the necessary
infrastructure to continue our efforts.
“We need to raise £200k by August 31st to secure a permanent building for our seed bank and I would call on people across County Antrim to help us protect our
indigenous plants from genetic degradation, hybridisation or extinction by donating.”

Turn Your Garden Into A Summer Paradise
Breathing some new life into your garden or outdoor space can be exactly what you need to convert your home into a summer paradise. From colourful and exotic plants to new garden furniture; there are many things that you can do to renovate your garden into a living space to be proud of.
Re-designing your garden is an exciting prospect that offers a wide range of possibilities to homeowners.
Modern landscape gardeners are capable of transforming even the most neglected of spaces into an easily maintained Mediterranean heaven.
Firstly, you must consider the plot that you are working with. Does your property frame the space? Where does the garden catch the sun? What level of maintenance do you wish
to work with? All of these factors are amongst those that must be taken into consideration in order to optimise your outdoor area.
When it comes to landscape gardening, research is of paramount importance. If working with a small space, the subtle use of mirrors, metals and light coloured paints can create an expansive feeling throughout the garden. The addition of new garden furniture can also be exactly what is required to
modernise the space. Bright coloured sheds; tables and chairs can reflect the natural light and create an atmosphere
Whilst your budget is often the ultimate limitation on what you can achieve through this renovation project, it is well worth hiring professionals to ensure that it is done to the highest possible quality. Qualified gardeners will have the experience and skill to foresee and avoid possible problems in the planning
and construction process. One of the simplest and most effective ways of transforming your outside space is through the addition of plants. A varied selection of flowers, trees and shrubs can create year-round interest that you will never bore of. The inclusion of Petunia’s, Marigold’s, Daylilies and Dahlia’s will bring a great deal of vibrancy throughout the summer months whilst Aster’s and Carnations will provide colour year-round.
All’s well when the lawn’s well.

Hay Fever – W H at y ou S H ould Kno W
As the warm weather begins to return and the summer holidays come ever-closer, it is easy to neglect the potential problems that come about at this time of the year.
Unlike the common cold, hay fever will not pass after a number of weeks and if left untreated, can remain an issue for a matter of months. Hay fever is usually made worse between late March and September, especially when the weather is warm, humid and windy. This is when the pollen count is at its highest.
Symptoms of hay fever can include sneezing, coughing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy, red or watery eyes, headaches and tiredness. It is particularly dangerous for those who suffer from asthma, as the combination can result in difficulty breathing and shortness of breath.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for hay fever and it cannot be prevented, however with the right approach the symptoms can be considerably eased. Simple measures such as avoiding grassy
areas, showering after you have been outside, keeping windows closed and not drying clothes outside can reduce the amount of pollen being inhaled. For more serious cases, antihistamines and cromoglycates can be taken to prevent an allergic reaction from occurring. Hay fever symptoms
are much likely to be worse if the pollen count is particularly high. The pollen count refers to the number of grains of pollen in one cubic meter of air. A low pollen count would consist of less than 30 grains of pollen in every cubic meter of air whereas a very high pollen count would be 150 grains.
In the majority of cases, symptoms of hay fever only begin when the pollen count is over 50. The pollen count is usually given as part of the weather forecast throughout the summer and spring months.
Most cases of hay fever can be treated with over-the-counter medication or simply avoiding areas which
contain high pollen counts. It is advised the one should only visit their GP when symptoms cannot be controlled after using over-the-counter medication or if you’re suffering from persistent implications of hay fever such as tightness of chest or a worsening of existing conditions such as asthma.

Water- W ay to spend a day in Belfast!
New Belfast river boat cruise service to boost Belfast tourism VISITORS to Belfast will now be able to enjoy a cruise around Belfast Lough following the launch of a new river cruise service by newlyformed tourism company Waterways Belfast Ltd.
The MV Lady of the Lagan, which was officially launched today by Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Christina Black, is the latest addition to Belfast’s long-standing maritime tourism product and will operate four daily onehour cruises of Belfast Harbour, starting and finishing at the Big Fish monument on Donegall Quay.
The first passengers on the ship were pupils from St Mary’s Primary School in Kircubbin, who won a competition to name the new vessel, and runners-up from Holy
Cross Boys Primary School in Belfast.
Waterways Belfast Ltd, founded by entrepreneurs Peter Lavery, Sean Donnelly and brothers Jeremy and Simon Rogers, has invested a quarter of a million pounds in in the new service that will navigate around Belfast Lough, highlighting key additions and developments to the shoreline and beyond that have helped to transform Belfast into a world class tourism destination over the last decade.
A former luxury cruiser on Lough Erne, the Lady of the Lagan can accommodate up to 60 passengers and crew and will operate all year round, with Belfast-born Captain Alan Gilfillan at the helm.
The vessel will
also be available for private hire functions in the evening, with a licensed bar to host a variety of events.
Waterways Belfast founding director Peter Lavery said: “It has
always been a passion of mine to see the sights and sounds of Belfast Lough being brought to a wider audience in the form of a quality maritime experience.
“After many months of searching, we were able to secure the MV Lady of the Lagan and, after considerable investment of approximately quarter of a million pounds,
I’m absolutely delighted with the results.
“We now have a fully licensed river cruiser which will offer a unique insight and experience into
Belfast’s expanding maritime history tourism product.
And in Captain Alan Gilfillan we have a highly experienced and personable member of the team who will help bring the unique story of Belfast Lough to life for all of our guests,“ he added.
Sailing times for the MV Lady of the Lagan are 1000hrs, 1200hrs, 1400hrs, and 1600hrs from the Big Fish monument at Donegall Quay, with tours costing £30 for adults and £20 for children.
Booking details are available at www. waterwaysbelfast. com and via the Visit Belfast tourist information centre and website.
Built in 1998, the Lady of the Lagan is a 160hp passenger vessel with a maximum speed of 10 knots.
The vessel is 16 metres in length and 5 metres wide with a capacity to hold 60 guests and crew.
The launch of the new cruise service isn’t Peter Lavery’s only link to Belfast’s maritime tourism industry.
The entrepreneur is also one of the directors behind the launch of the new Titanic Distillers whiskey distillery and visitor centre, which is based at the historic Titanic Pumphouse, in the heart of Belfast’s Titanic Quarter.
The city’s first working whiskey distillery in almost 90 years opened its doors to the public on Friday April 28, 2023 and gives guests a chance to explore the site where Titanic last rested on dry ground, before her maiden voyage.

The VW Touran’s success story
Volkswagen has upgraded the popular compact van and further improved its technology to the state of the art.
The Touran celebrates its 20th birthday this year and continues to impress, thanks to a spacious and variable interior, efficient engines and agile handling.
In addition to a wide range of standard safety systems, the optional IQ.DRIVE incl. IQ.LIGHT assist package now also includes the Travel Assist and the Dynamic Light Assist mainbeam control.
“More than a family car” was the claim for the Touran market launch on 14 March 2003. The compact van is a multivariable family, leisure and business car with the best all-round characteristics. And, with more than 2.6 million units now sold, it is one of the most successful multipurpose vehicles (MPV) in the world.
The second generation of the Touran was launched in 2015. It is VW’s first van based on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB).
This basis now enables the Touran to undergo extensive technical upgrading and model updating.
Numerous driver assistance systems on board
Standard features include Active Cruise Control (ACC) with speed limiter, Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist, Lane Assist lane departure warning and Side Assist lane change assist. This range of assistance and infotainment systems is
usually only found in higher vehicle classes – thanks to MQB, they are also used in the Touran.
The standard equipment now includes, among other things, PreCrash at the rear. The system uses the sensor technology of the Side Assist lane change assist. Radar sensors detect the position and speed of cars behind the Touran. If PreCrash at the rear detects an imminent rear-end collision due to the position of the following vehicle and the excessive speed difference between the two vehicles, the proactive occupant protection system is activated – not only while driving, but also while stationary with the engine running or in start/stop mode.
Comfort also gets an upgrade Volkswagen has not only upgraded the Touran in terms of assistance systems.
The family van has also received an upgrade in terms of comfort: with a latest-generation steering wheel including contact detection, the freely programmable Basic instrument cluster (20.3 centimetres or 8 inches) and the air conditioner control console with touch controls at the front and rear (both optional).
In addition, with optional functions such as Easy Open & Close (closing
the trunk lid by foot movement) and Keyless Access (keyless locking and starting system), the Touran is also state-of-the-art in terms of user friendliness.
Even more efficient drives
Efficient drives are also available for the bestseller: among other things, Volkswagen has continued to develop its best-selling
1.5 TSI petrol engine and is now also using the latest generation in the Touran – the TSI evo2 with 110 kW / 150 PS04Maximum suitability for everyday use for up to seven people
The Touran impresses
Polestar 2 a rising star of 2023
Polestar has created a second limited-edition version of Polestar 2 within its Polestar Engineered portfolio – the BST edition 230.
Starting with the exceptional chassis modifications developed for ultimate thrills in the original BST edition, the new version puts more focus on performance design details.
with a large and multivariable interior –with five to seven seats, depending on customer preference. The enormous interior width is particularly appealing to families, with enough space for three child seats fitted side by side in the rear. In terms of steering and running gear, the Touran impresses with the handling of a Golf. It is agile, the steering is sensitive, the optional adaptive running gear (DCC) ensures a high level of driving comfort and the turning circle is only 11.6 metres.
“Limited drops like the BST edition 230 allow us to explore colours, graphics and materials in faster and more creative ways,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.
Unique design upgrades for the 350 kW and 680 Nm Polestar 2 BST edition 230 include exclusive green Nebula paintwork and MicroSuede textile for the seats and steering wheel inserts – made from partly recycled Nubuck textile. The exterior can also be ordered in Space (black), with an optional full-length
body stripe available for either body colour. All the chassis upgrades that were first implemented on the original Polestar 2 BST edition 270 remain available, including the lowered ride height (-25 mm), specially developed and unique Öhlins
2-way adjustable dampers, front strut bar, 20% stiffer springs and unique black 21-inch alloy wheels that are inspired by those of Polestar 1, fitted with 245/35R21 Pirelli P Zero tyres developed specifically for BST edition cars.
A total of 230 units will be produced for European and North American Polestar markets, with cars available to order immediately online from 21 March 2023 at Polestar. com. Deliveries are expected from the third quarter of 2023.

New look 2023 Mazda2 makes Spring debut
The ever-popular Mazda2 has received a substantially revised new look with fresh exterior styling and new cabin trim treatment. Across the four newly named trim grades: Centre-Line, Homura, Exclusive-Line and Homura Aka - the 2023 Mazda2 features a new grille, a sleeker bumper design, decorative dash panels and two exterior colours that make their Mazda debut on the supermini: Aero Grey and Air Stream Blue.
For the 2023 Mazda2, Mazda’s designers have focused on new design features that give the different models a more distinctive appearance to allow customers the opportunity to reflect their individuality with a wider choice of colour combinations across the four model grades. The Mazda2’s personality has been redefined with CentreLine and Exclusive-Line focusing on a fun and casual nature, while the Homura and Homura Aka have been designed to give the Mazda2 a sportier look and character.
Across all models
the 2023 Mazda2’s new grille sees the signature Mazda wing surround pass beneath rather than below the number plate, leaving space to accentuate the new sportier lower bumper trim and shape. Additionally, to give a sharper look, the signature wing grille surround cuts into the leading edge of the headlight rather than passing underneath, while asymmetrically placed colour accent tabs feature on the front grille and rear bumper across all models.
The Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line have a front-end design that features a large coloured panel across the lower section of the grille, which combined with the new front bumper design and more prominent lower grille section with a gloss black signature wing surround, gives the 2023 Mazda2 an unmistakable new look. With the aim of
giving customers more colour combination choices, on Soul Red Crystal, Snowflake White, Platinum Quartz, Polymetal Grey and the new Air Stream Blue the grille panel is body coloured, while on Machine Grey, Deep Crystal Blue, Ceramic Metallic and the new Aero Grey colour, the grille panel is in Jet Black to give a smart contrasting look. Jet Black cars also have a Jet Black grille panel.
All Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line cars feature a small yellow accent tab in the grille, something that’s repeated at the back where the revised rear bumper features a now full width black lower moulding with the yellow accent tab. Centre-Line cars feature 15-inch silver alloy wheels as standard, while Exclusive-Line steps up to 16-inch bright alloy wheels.
Inside, the Centre-Line and Exclusive-Line
cars there’s a similar colour combination style with a new decorative dash panel that is mint coloured on Air Stream Blue and Ceramic Metallic cars for example. On Soul Red Crystal, Snowflake White, Platinum Quartz and Polymetal Grey cars the dash panel is pure white, while the remaining exterior colours get a mirror black finish. The Homura and Homura Aka 2023
Mazda2 take a different approach and have been designed to be a more sporty interpretation of the Mazda2. Taking advantage of the Mazda2’s wellproportioned Kodo design and the new sleeker bumper design, the Homura has a black honeycomb grille with a red accent tab, matched to gloss black door mirrors, 16-inch black alloy wheels and a black shark fin roof antenna. At the back,
the red accent sits on the lower right hand side of the black bumper trim strip.
Priced from £17,750 the 2023 Mazda2 range goes on sale from late spring. Thanks to being sold alongside the Mazda2 Hybrid, Mazda has a pair of distinctive and premium contenders in the supermini segment, meaning Mazda offers the biggest choice in this sector of the small hatchback market.

Home Inter I or Summer colour trend S for 2023
Spring Lawn Care
Nothing beats a beautiful lawn in making the garden look completely stunning.
in the popularity of raw plaster, and with that has come a demand for a finish that mimics the appearance of fresh plaster. Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster launched a thousand Instagram posts in 2022 their newer Templeton Pink is a deeper and richer take.
The colour palette got even larger lately Leading paint Manfacturer Farrow & Ball alone introducing 11 new colours recently ( the first alteration to their collection since 2018.) There is a move towards bold and brash colours that lend themselves to exaggerated statements and also an array of neutral and natural tones that embody a sense of calm and containment. Here are just a few ideas to get you in the summer mood!
Deep reds
In 2023, reds are rich and pigmented, Graham and Brown also chose a moody and romantic red as their colour of the year. When decorating with red, consider how susceptible the colour can be to natural light. The colour takes on slightly different tones throughout the day and the seasons. It can be vibrant and fresh in the morning, cosy and rich in the evening
The new plaster pink
We’re seeing a resurgence
Pink may divide opinion; however, over the past few years, this versatile shade has boomed in popularity. Pink provides a more elegant, more playful alternative to grey, it creates incredible warmth and an alluring appeal and looks fab in kitchens!
Wheat field neutrals Whilst there is still more than a hint of a Scandinavian colour palette here, wheat field neutrals introduce undertones of yellow and gold that add considerable warmth.
Dulux’s Wild Wonder is a nature-inspired update on the theme. Don’t be afraid to go big and bold with rich warm coloured furniture to complement Wild
Wonder walls. Pair it with Yellow and golds to warm up this new neutral backdrop – and sofas and footstools can really make a statement in your living space in brighter accent
shades. Alternatively, you can easily start to layer in this colour with smaller accessories, such as cushions and throws, adding hints of yellow to your existing interiors.
But all too often people start to mow the grass in spring and they find bare patches, ugly weeds and slippery moss instead of thick green turf that’s a pleasure to walk on. Renovating your lawn in the spring won’t take a long time or cost a fortune. hints and tips for better lawns
1. Fertilise. Feed your lawn with a fertiliser.
2. Mow the grass regularly – at least once a week. Don’t cut it too short, especially in dry weather. Trim the edge of the lawn whenever you mow to keep crisp lines that clearly show the care you are taking.
3. Water the grass only when it
desperately needs it. Then water thoroughly so the roots are well watered.
If you just wet the top you will encourage roots at the surface which are much more vulnerable to drought
damage.
4. If you feed the lawn again in a couple of months time it will remain strong and healthy all summer. In July you will have a summer lawn to be proud of!

Bring the Outdoors
Inside
Nothing says summer like lush green trees and blooming flowers. To bring your home into harmony with the summer interior design trends in 2023, try decorating with tall, standing house plants, like a monstera or a snake plant. These sturdy house plants are like living art, adding a vibrant pop of color to any room. If you don’t have a green thumb, try to use realistic-looking fake plants. That way, you can feel like you have a little piece of a garden in your home, yet never worry about forgetting to water the plants. Now that the trees outside have fully bloomed again, why
Make your Summer Shine!
obstruct your view of nature’s beauty? If you’re lucky enough to get sunlight shining through a window in your kitchen, consider the summer a perfect opportunity to grow a window sill herb garden! Nothing represents the ideal intersection of function and style better than a decoration that you can also add to your lunch. No matter what the season, one thing is for sure: plants will never go out of style.
Metallics Shine Who doesn’t love a bit of glitz and glam? This season’s summer interior design trends embrace warm metallics, like bronze, copper, brass, gold, and rose gold.
When it comes to metallic accents, get creative. Think candleholders, picture frames, lampshades, decorative bowls, plant pots – let it all shine! As you apply these metallic summer
interior design trends, feel free to mix and match different tones. For example, if your kitchen is already loaded with your favourite stainless steel appliances, try matching that cool-
toned silver with a warmer bronze colour for your dishes, silverware, sink hardware, wine rack, or cabinet door handles. If your home is sporting that classic all-white look, make
it modern with the summer interior design trends of 2023 – add bright bronze or rose gold accents, breathing new life into a tired, monochromatic room. If you’re on a budget or seeking a craft
Create an Outdoor Meditation Room
Meditation is a way to quiet your thoughts to tap into the creative force in your life.
It can refresh the mind, lift the spirits and help you feel more connected. Meditation can be as simple as sitting in a chair and quietly praying, or it can be as disciplined as Zen practices. However you meditate, having a space that’s set aside for that purpose is helpful. Given good weather, a place outside can be ideal.
Find a quiet area that will allow you to feel peaceful and calm. A shady space is advisable.
Before you do anything with the space, sit in it and check out how it looks, sounds and feels. You want it to be out of
the wind and quiet. If you like the space but find it a bit noisy, consider placing plants around it to help block out the sounds or playing soft music. A water feature can create soothing white noise. Define the area with a comfortable outdoor chair where you can read before praying, a woven mat where you can sit while you meditate or stretch when you’re finished, inspirational statuary, lanterns if you like to meditate in the evening and a small storage chest where you can keep pillows to support your back,
a blanket and your books. Arrange these items in a harmonious way with your plants and water feature. Choose colours that will enhance your meditation. Soothing, cool colours such as light blues, greens
and greys can ease you into meditation. Use these colours in your fabrics and accents. If you have a favourite item or picture that you use during your practice, put it in a prominent spot.
project to keep you busy, consider adding these metallic accents yourself – buy some metallic paint and get busy painting your existing candle holders, plant pots, picture frames, and other decors.
Bold Patterns
Whether it’s florals or animal prints, the right pattern can change the ambiance of a room.
Think boldly, and consider options like a two-tone geometric rug, or an up-close print of a flower.
When in doubt, larger scale prints beat smaller ones – opt for a
pillow cushion with a handful of palm trees and pineapples decorating the surface, rather than a granny chic print of tiny daisies. In minimalist interiors, the right choice of bold patterns can elevate your style while reserving an elegant simplicity. If you’re up for the challenge, you might even consider using mixed patterns in similar colour palettes –perhaps a tropical print could match a thin, subtle striped print. You’ll never know until you try it out!
