With an increase in callouts this year, Air Ambulance NI’s Agribusiness Group is urging the agricultural community to rally behind the charity and help keep the air ambulance in operation.
The group, which is made up of agricultural enthusiasts and advocates, has been actively fundraising and raising awareness for the charity since 2020.
The agri group representatives include Aurelie Moralis of Castlewellan, Co Down who is a qualified vet now working in the animal health pharmaceutical industry.
The very first call out of Air Ambulance was to a farming incident and farming and agricultural incidents account for up to 11% of call outs. This includes accidents involving farm machinery, slurry or cattle. Unfortunately, on average, there is a farming call every week.
Other ways to support include organising a
tractor run or coffee morning, quiz or collection. The charity also encourages individuals to become a member by registering a monthly direct debit as a Club Member – you can do that here: https:// airambulanceni.org/ club-aani-membership/ Air Ambulance NI, in partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), provides lifesaving care to critically ill and injured patients across the region. With an average of two callouts per day, the service is often the critical difference between life and death. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has commenced a significant refurbishment project at Ballynahinch Community Centre.
The project, which represents an investment of £905,000, will include both internal and external modifications, as well as essential structural enhancements to ensure that Ballynahinch Community Centre remains accessible and fully operational for residents of Ballynahinch and the surrounding areas for years to come.
A series of consultations with the public, staff and centre users helped shape a new internal layout designed to increase the centre’s usage and meet the evolving needs of the local community. Key upgrades and
enhancements include a new 100 square metre multi-purpose room which will provide additional space for activities such as aerobics, yoga, and large meetings. This new space is expected to increase the centre’s capacity to accommodate additional bookings, particularly during peak times. A meeting room will be added to accommodate smaller meetings, oneto-one sessions or group gatherings for up to 20 people. A new Changing Places facility will be installed and this larger, fully accessible toilet will be equipped with specialist
features such as hoists, privacy curtains, adultsized changing benches and ample space for carers, making it suitable for use by people with severe disabilities. To address longstanding parking issues, the renovation will include an increase in parking capacity from the current 13 spaces (including 2 disabled spaces) to a total of 33 spaces providing more convenient access for users.
The project is expected to be completed by March 2025, at which time the facility will reopen, offering an improved experience for all users.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor David LeeSurginor said, “This substantial investment in Ballynahinch Community Centre highlights the Council’s commitment not only to the present but also to ensuring a wellmaintained, accessible community facility for the future. The centre will remain a key resource for the people of Ballynahinch and surrounding areas for many years to come.”

Each year, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council hosts an amateur photography competition to highlight the splendour of the district’s three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
The winning photographs from across, the Mournes, the Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Lecale, are then compiled into the highly sought after AONB calendar.
This year the standard of entries to the competition has been exceptionally high, with amateur photographers entering an amazing array of beautiful images of the three areas. Judging took place in September, where a panel comprised of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne, Ards and North Down Borough Council Mayor, Councillor Alistair Cathcart, and the Chairperson of the Mourne Heritage Trust Mr David Maginn, came together to select the winning entries.
The Council are delighted to announce that Evan Boyce won the overall competition with his image ‘Murlough Driftwood’. Receiving second place in the overall competition was Enda Quinn with ‘The Misty Three’ at Killeavy. Winner of the Under 18
category was Rowen Gallagher with his black and white photo of ‘Binnian and Wee Binnian’ in the Mournes.
You can find the full gallery of winners and finalists for the 2024 competition on the competition pages of www. ringofgullion.org Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne said, “This
annual competition held by the Council’s AONB and Geopark management team, allows amateur photographers to show us through their camera lens the truly breathtaking landscapes that make up our district, which are now also internationally recognised as part of the Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark. It has been a pleasure to take part in the judging of
this competition, I have been very impressed by the quality of the images entered and I am looking forward to receiving my AONB Calendar for 2025.” The AONB Calendar will be available in time for Christmas, in which the competition will once more be launched for our 2026 calendar. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne, has officially marked the beginning of construction works on the new, purposebuilt Tyrella Beach Visitor Amenity Building.
This modern facility forms a key part of Council’s vision and commitment to enhancing visitor experiences at this award-winning Blue Flag beach.
The construction, led by Bell Contracts, will deliver modern toilet and changing facilities, a fully equipped ‘Changing Places’ toilet, an accessible restroom, outdoor showers and solar-powered electricity.
In addition to the new amenities, the works will involve the removal of the previous beach building and storage container, allowing the area to revert to natural dune habitat with ecological benefits.

It is one of three Blue Flag beaches within the Newry Mourne and Down District alongside Cranfield and Murlough.

The dunes are home to a diverse range of local flora and fauna whilst the expansive sandy beach and clean waters are perfect for a wide range of family-friendly outdoor activities. The new building will further enhance the visitor experience and I encourage all to come and enjoy this enhanced facility when it opens in the Summer of 2025”.
Over 500 children from 37 schools across the district recently gathered at Kilbroney Forest Park in Rostrevor for the highly anticipated annual Be Active P7 School’s Cross Country event.
This scenic venue was brought to life with an energetic musical warmup, creating an electric atmosphere alongside a giant inflatable finish line.
Despite the damp and windy weather conditions, spirits were high as the children ran 1,100m within the lower meadow of the forest park.
The event kicked off with the girls’ race, where 256 participants started at a swift pace, undeterred by the weather. Next, 266 boys took to the course, competing fiercely in their race, eagerly awaiting the team and individual results.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne attended on the day and was on hand to present the medals and trophies to the top finishers.
Councillor Pete Byrne
said, “I am absolutely delighted to see over 500 children from across the district take part in this year’s annual Be Active P.7 Cross Country event. The level of enthusiasm and determination displayed by these young athletes is truly inspiring. Events like this not only promote physical activity and healthy competition, but they also bring our community together. JV Allister contemplates the mythology and magic surrounding the Hare Hares and rabbits belong to the same family, Leporidae, but are not closely related. Rabbits were brought to Britain by the Romans, but hares are truly native; beautiful, fastrunning creatures of open grassland, heath and mountain, and which often feature in mythology and early Christianity.
There are three species in Britain and Ireland: The Brown or Common Hare, mainly in England, the Mountain Hare, mainly in Scotland, and the Irish Hare, regarded as a subspecies of Mountain Hares but, after being here since about 28,000BC, is unique. Indeed, as we learn later, there is one particular Irish Hare which is both unique, and rare.
Larger than rabbits, with longer legs and
ears, hares don’t make burrows, instead living year-round above ground, usually hidden in vegetation such as rushes or tufted grass in a small depression called a ‘form’ (which is where they give birth to their young, called leverets), and are seldom seen during the day. They prefer to eat vegetation at night, and it’s this lifestyle, together with their longtime association with humans and the moon, which led to belief in their supernatural powers, particularly by Celtic people.
Of course, in addition to their mostly nocturnal habitat, hares became known for fast running and, particularly, their Mad March antics and ‘boxing’ on their hind legs, now known to be mainly females fighting off unwanted male

partners, rather than the more macho version of males fighting males for breeding ‘rights’.
In ancient Ireland, hares were associated with Women from the Underworld who could shapeshift into the form of a hare, and there are stories of (male) hunters who chased wounded hares only to find equally damaged (but usually beautiful) damsels hidden
in undergrowth. In England, they were often associated with witches and other ‘creatures of the night’. But even though hares were also associated with the Saxon Goddess Eostre, they soon were assimilated into Christian rituals and symbols, particularly the triskele of three hares representing Father, Son and Holy Spirit (they each appear to have
two ears, but only share three!).
Finally, to our own rare, unique hare: the Golden Hare of Rathlin, which is only found in small numbers on the North Antrim Island, a genetic variant of the Irish Hare, with golden fur and blue eyes. I wonder what our pagan ancestors would have made of such a mystical creature.
The Rural Business Development Grant Scheme is funded through the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs ‘Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation’ (TRPSI) Programme and is delivered in partnership with local Councils.
Eligible rural businesses can apply for capital assistance of 50% up to the value of £4,999 for the purchase of capital equipment which will help their business to enhance sustainability or lead to growth opportunities and the creation of employment opportunities which in turn strengthen the rural economy.
Launching the scheme, Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, Andrew Muir, MLA, said: “I am pleased to announce the opening of the £1.55million Rural Business Development Grant Scheme. This fund is important in delivering on the Department’s priority of building strong sustainable and diverse rural communities and the draft Programme for Government priority of growing a globally competitive and sustainable economy with a focus on addressing regional balance.”
Minister Muir continued: “I urge all eligible rural businesses to go online and apply as soon as possible.
Rural Businesses continue to play a vital role in our rural communities, and I want to support them at this challenging time and provide them with opportunities that will maximise their potential and stimulate business growth.”
Details of the Rural Business Development Grant Scheme are on the DAERA website at: https://www.daera-ni. gov.uk/services/ruralbusiness-developmentgrant-scheme-rbdgs. Only online applications can be accepted for this scheme.
The Scheme opens for applications at 9:00am on 16 October 2024 and closes at 12 noon on 8 November 2024.

Contact the Family Benefits Advice Service to find out what support is available to your family.
The festive season is upon us once again and amidst the excitement this can also be a worrying time for many families. The run up to Christmas inevitably means additional expenses, both in terms of presents and extra food for family get togethers, but also the continuing financial pressures of rising household bills, and the cost of heating and lighting our homes through the darkest and coldest time of the year. We would encourage all parents to take a few minutes this festive season and get in touch with the Family Benefits Advice Service to make sure their family is receiving all the financial support they are entitled to. In the past year our advisors identified an average of £1,494 in additional financial support for the families we carried
out a calculation for.
So before 2025 starts make the decision to call us to ensure you will be starting the new year knowing exactly what support you are entitled to, and how to apply for it. Don’t miss out because you think you won’t be entitled to support, or that it will be too complicated. Here’s two examples of families we have helped become better off: Kathryn is a single mum of 1 child returning to work after being on maternity leave. While receiving Statutory Maternity Pay she has also been in receipt of Universal Credit and wanted check if this would remain the best form of support when she returned to work full time. We advised that whilst she still would have an entitlement to Universal Credit, she would actually be better
off by £2033 per year by moving to Tax-Free Childcare, which would also allow her to claim support through the NI Childcare Subsidy Scheme.
Amy and John have one child, John is unable to carry on working due to an accident at work leaving him with permanent injuries.
John’s injuries also mean that he is unable to look after their young child by himself. They are in receipt of Universal Credit and were worried that they would no longer get help with their childcare costs as John is no longer working. We were able to advise that John could apply for Limited Capability for
Work through Universal Credit and therefore they would continue to get the help with childcare costs while only Amy remained in work.

Economy Minister, Conor Murphy, has announced an additional £2.5m funding package for the NI Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP).
NISEP is a series of energy efficiency schemes with 80% of funding targeted at low-income households delivered by the Energy Saving Trust on behalf of the Utility Regulator. This additional £2.5m funding will result in a range of energy efficiency measures being installed in approximately 1,000 lowincome households.
Speaking at today’s announcement, Minister Murphy said: “Last year, my department provided £1m additional funding to NISEP, which helped almost 500 homes become more energy efficient. Today, I am pleased to announce that I am doubling that level of funding to £2.5m. This will allow 1,000 more vulnerable
households across the north to install energy efficiency measures such as loft and cavity wall insulation. This will not only improve the warmth and comfort of their homes but also lower their energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions.
“I have been clear that decarbonisation is the cornerstone of my Economic Vision but that a transition to a greener and more sustainable economy must be a fair and just transition for all. At this time of severe budget pressures, this additional £2.5m funding indicates my ongoing determination to help those most vulnerable in our society.”
Turning to how the funding will also help
inform and support the delivery of the NI Energy Strategy, the Minister concluded: “Today’s funding announcement is a key deliverable from the 2024 Energy
Strategy Action Plan. It will also provide critical commercial and consumer insight for officials on the development and delivery of a domestic energy efficiency programme as outlined in
the Energy Strategy – Path to Net Zero Energy.”
Further information on NISEP, eligibility criteria and how to apply can be found at: energysavingtrust. org.uk/programme/nisep
Shining the spotlight on the results recently revealed in the Continuous Household Survey (CHS) to remind customers only washing full loads of washing in a washing machine is good for the environment and also good for your pocket.
The CHS presented findings in relation to household water usage. The results show that 99% of households have a washing machine and, more than one in four (22%) use their washing machine every day.
NI Water Education Officer Anna Killen said: “It’s amazing to think that on an average day, each person uses around 170 litres of water, yet only 4% is actually used for drinking. It’s important to create habits that will help us to reduce the water we are using in other ways, including washing our clothes.
“Clothes washing equates to a whopping 13% of our daily water usage. Washing machines use approximately 60 litres per cycle but there are some small and simple changes we can all make to
ensure we are making full use of washing machines and being more water efficient.
“As we look ahead to the winter months when we will be using more energy in our homes, changing how often and the ways you use your washing machine will help you save both energy and money.
According to the Energy Savings Trust you can save around £36 in NI a year on your energy bill by making small changes in how you use your washing machine, including washing at 30 degrees and reducing your washing machine use by one run per week for a year.”
Anna’s top tips to save water and money when using washing machines: • Only wash full loads:
half load programmes on washing machines use more than half the water and energy of a full load, so always wait until the machine is full before switching it on • Reduce your washing machine run once a week and use 30-degree cycles instead of higher temperatures: with the cost of living and trying to save on household bills, the Energy Savings Trust says these small changes can save you £36 in NI a year on your energy bill
• Get Water Fit – NI Water offers an online ‘Get Water Fit’ water audit to help households find out more about how and where they use water and it also suggests some easy ways to help make savings. Go to www.getwaterfit.co.uk to find out more.

Village markets offer a unique and charming shopping experience. The vibrant atmosphere, coupled with the opportunity to discover unique finds and connect with the community, sets them apart from traditional retail settings.
For those seeking a respite from the city’s fast pace, or simply looking to explore something extraordinary, a village market is an ideal destination.
One of the greatest attractions of village markets is the wide variety of goods on offer. From handmade crafts and vintage treasures to local produce and artisanal food, there’s something for everyone.
By shopping at a village market, you’re directly supporting local businesses and artisans. It’s a fantastic way to give back to your community and help preserve traditional crafts and skills.
In addition to the unique finds, village markets offer a more immersive shopping experience than large department stores. You can
chat with the makers, learn about their products, and get a sense of the story behind each item.
For foodies, village markets are a must-visit. You’ll find an abundance of fresh, seasonal produce, often sourced from local farms.
Village markets also provide a great opportunity to connect with your community. You’ll often find live music, street performers, and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
Tips for a Successful Village Market Shopping Trip:
• Do Your Research: Before you go, check the market’s website or social media pages to see what vendors will be there. This will help you plan your trip and make sure you don’t miss anything.
• Arrive Early: To avoid the crowds and get the best selection of goods, it’s a good idea to arrive early in the morning.
• Wear Comfortable Shoes: You’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, so make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes.
• Bargain Wisely: Many vendors are open to
negotiation, especially for larger purchases. Don’t be afraid to haggle a little and see if you can get a better deal.
• Support Local Artisans: Look for vendors who are selling handmade or locally produced goods. By supporting these businesses, you’re helping to preserve
traditional crafts and skills.
• Try Before You Buy: If possible, try on clothes or test out products before you buy them. This will help you ensure that you’re getting something you’ll love.
• Bring a Reusable Bag: To help reduce waste and support sustainability, bring your own reusable shopping bags. Whether you’re a seasoned shopper or just starting out, a village market is a wonderful place to explore. With a little planning and a sense of adventure, you’re sure to have a memorable experience.
As the chilly winter months approach, ensuring your home stays cozy and comfortable without breaking the bank is essential.
Optimize Your Heating System. Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure your heating system is operating at peak efficiency. A professional check-up can identify and address any issues that may be affecting its performance.
Consider investing in a smart thermostat to automate temperature control, create schedules, and potentially save energy. Additionally, ensure your home is adequately insulated to prevent heat loss through walls, ceilings, and floors.
Leverage Natural Heat Sources. Sunlight can be a valuable source of warmth.
Keep curtains and blinds open during the day to allow sunlight to heat your home, and close them at night to retain heat. The heat generated from cooking and appliances can also contribute to warming up adjacent rooms. If you have a fireplace or woodstove, use them wisely, ensuring proper ventilation and burning
efficiency.
Create a Warm Home Environment. Preventing drafts is essential for maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. Seal any gaps or cracks around doors and windows to keep cold air out. Rugs and carpets can help insulate floors and provide warmth underfoot. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to changing temperatures and stay comfortable without relying solely on your heating system.
Energy-Efficient Appliances and Lighting. Replacing incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs can reduce your lighting energy consumption. Additionally, choosing appliances with the Energy Star label can help you save energy and money. By implementing these strategies, you can create a warm and inviting home environment while minimizing your energy consumption and costs.
Christmas is more than just a holiday; it’s a season of transformation. Let’s turn your home into a magical winter wonderland that reflects your unique personality.
1. Theme Beyond the Traditional: While red and green are classic, consider a theme that speaks to your heart. Is it a snowy mountain retreat, a fairytale castle, or a nautical adventure? Let your imagination run wild.
2. Tree Tweaks: Instead of the usual ornaments, try decorating your tree with vintage toys, family heirlooms, or handmade paper ornaments. For a truly unique look, consider a nontraditional tree, like a bonsai or a collection of branches.
4. Cozy Corners: Transform a forgotten corner of your home into a cozy reading nook. Add a comfortable armchair, a soft blanket, and a festive string of lights. For an extra touch of magic, place a small Christmas tree with twinkling lights nearby.
5. DIY Delights: Instead of buying expensive
3. Window Wonders: Go beyond the standard wreaths and lights. Create a winter scene with paper snowflakes, painted glass ornaments, or even miniature figurines. For a dramatic effect, project snow scenes onto your windows using a projector.
decorations, get creative with DIY projects. Make your own garlands, wreaths, and ornaments using materials you already have at home. For a personal touch, incorporate family photos or hand-written messages.
6. Edible Elegance: Let your Christmas decorations be a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. Decorate your tree with edible ornaments, like gingerbread men or sugar cookies. Create a festive centerpiece using fruit, nuts, and candles.
7. Sensory Surprise:
Engage all your senses in your Christmas decorating. Play Christmas carols, light scented candles, and create a cozy atmosphere with soft blankets and pillows. For a truly immersive experience, incorporate textures like faux fur, velvet, and corduroy.
8. Outdoor Oasis: Don’t forget to extend your Christmas cheer to your outdoor space. Create a winter wonderland with lights, snowmen, and festive planters. For a truly memorable experience, host a Christmas bonfire or outdoor movie night.

Jogger triumphed in 2022, then Spring in 2023, and now the brilliant £23,000 Duster 4x4 takes the crown as Value Car of the Year. Proper mechanical 4WD with high ground clearance and attack angles, chunky tyres and five drive modes. Winter proof. Looks ace. Incredible.”
This is the second award the All-New Duster has won before even arriving in UK showrooms.
