Immediate Action Needed to Protect Blue Carbon Habitats,

DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has stressed the urgent need for Northern Ireland to act swiftly in protecting its vital blue carbon habitats. His comments came during the launch of Northern Ireland’s first Blue Carbon Action Plan, held at Mount Stewart, County Down.

The new Action Plan outlines 22 strategic actions designed to safeguard marine ecosystems that play a crucial role in capturing carbon and combating climate change. It also promotes nature-based solutions to absorb carbon dioxide within Northern Ireland’s inshore waters.

Launching the plan, Minister Muir said: “We must act now to address the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Protecting our blue carbon habitats is essential for maximizing their ability to store greenhouse gases, mitigate climate impacts, and support biodiversity.”

He highlighted the importance of habitats such as saltmarsh, seagrass meadows, kelp forests, and mussel beds, which not only store carbon but also

Says Minister Muir

provide critical ecosystem services.

“Saltmarshes help reduce coastal flooding, while kelp forests can lessen storm damage along our coasts. These habitats are home to a wide variety of unique plants and animals,” he added.

Referring to Strangford Lough, the Minister noted the presence of rich blue carbon habitats across the area, from seagrass and saltmarsh in the north to kelp forests and native shellfish beds throughout its waters.

Minister Muir also emphasized the collaborative nature of the plan’s development:

“This Action Plan was created through strong engagement with a broad range of stakeholders. I’m grateful to all our partners for their time and input. As we move into implementation, continued collaboration will be key to delivering this plan and addressing the environmental challenges we face.”

Public Backing for Nature-Friendly Farming in Northern Ireland

A recent opinion poll reveals that over 70% of the public in Northern Ireland support using public funds to assist farmers in addressing the nature and climate emergency. Conducted by LucidTalk in March on behalf of RSPB NI, the survey involved 1,849 participants and was weighted to reflect the region's demographics. The findings align with RSPB NI's advocacy for increased investment in nature-friendly farming practices

This public sentiment comes ahead of the Balmoral Show, where the Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs is expected to announce the new "Farming with Nature" package. This initiative aims to provide financial support to farmers implementing nature-friendly practices

Joanne Sherwood, Director of RSPB NI, emphasized that the poll indicates a clear majority of people want the Executive to provide public funding to farmers to restore and enhance nature. With over 75% of land in Northern Ireland used for agriculture, investing in nature-friendly farming is essential not only for species and habitats but also to improve the resilience of the farming industry and food production.

The 2023 State of Nature Report highlighted that Northern Ireland had the lowest percentage of agricultural land in agri-environment schemes across the UK. Economic analysis also demonstrates that current agricultural budgets are significantly less than needed for Northern Ireland’s agricultural sector to help tackle the nature and climate emergency

RSPB NI collaborates with over 400 farmers, providing nature-friendly farming advice, and aims to ensure that the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs' (DAERA) new "Farming for Nature" package is robust, ambitious, and well-resourced. To support this initiative, RSPB NI has launched an e-action where farmers and the public can show their support to the Minister.

The poll also revealed that 88% of the public believe supermarkets should do more to support and incentivize farmers to adopt nature-friendly farming practices. Agri-environment schemes have become the primary mechanism for addressing declines in farmland biodiversity in the UK and across Europe. Within such schemes, farmers are financially incentivized to maintain and create habitats on their farms and implement nature-friendly practices. The "Farming with Nature" package has the potential to build on the successes of previous schemes, continuing to deliver benefits for both nature and farmers.

RSPB NI, a charity that has been working in Northern Ireland for nearly 60 years, carries out vital conservation efforts to support nature in the region. To show your support and take the e-action, visit https://bit.ly/RSPBNI-

Public Urged to Act Responsibly to Prevent Wildfires During Good Weather

As Northern Ireland experiences a spell of good weather, the public is being strongly urged to act responsibly when spending time in the countryside to help prevent further wildfires. The warning follows a recent spate of destructive blazes that caused widespread damage to the landscape, wildlife, and communities across the region.

In a show of appreciation, Health Minister Mike Nesbitt and Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Andrew Muir visited Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) headquarters in Lisburn and attended a drill night at Ballynahinch Station. There, they personally thanked firefighters, control room staff, and support teams involved in combating the fires

Minister Nesbitt described meeting frontline personnel as a privilege and paid tribute to their bravery and dedication. “The recent wildfires devastated large areas and put homes, lives, and livelihoods at risk. The commitment shown by our emergency services, often under extreme and hazardous conditions, is truly commendable,” he said. He also urged the public to be vigilant and responsible when enjoying outdoor spaces

Minister Muir echoed those sentiments, expressing gratitude to the firefighters and partner agencies who worked tirelessly to contain the fires. “The destruction caused to wildlife, habitats, and farmland was heartbreaking,” he said. “But thanks to the swift and expert response by all involved, the damage was not as severe as it could have been.” He highlighted support from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), which included deployment of All-Terrain Vehicles and on-site assistance from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).

Between 3 and 13 April alone, NIFRS received 2,762 calls and responded to 1,499 incidents — 390 of which were gorse or wildfire related. Fires broke out across multiple locations including Bloody Bridge in Newcastle, Silent Valley near Kilkeel, Sawel Mountain near Newtownstewart, and Dervock in County Antrim. A major incident was declared in the Mourne Mountains. Many fires are believed to have been started deliberately.

NIFRS Chief Fire & Rescue Officer Aidan Jennings praised the dedication of staff across the service. “Our crews and support teams worked relentlessly to protect lives and land,” he said. “As we head into the summer months, we ask everyone to act safely and help prevent more wildfires from starting.”

Everyone has a role to play — let’s protect our countryside together

What You Need to Know About the New FEI Noseband Measuring Device

As of May 1, 2025, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) has implemented a standardised rule for noseband tightness across all disciplines. This regulation aims to ensure consistent and objective assessments of noseband fit, enhancing equine welfare

 Standardized Measuring Device

The FEI has introduced a specific measuring device, approximately 1 7 cm (0 7 inches) thick, to assess the tightness of a horse's noseband. This device must be able to pass between the horse's nasal bone and the noseband. If it cannot pass through, the noseband must be loosened before the horse can compete .

 Pre-Competition and In-Competition Protocols

Pre-Competition: Before entering the competition arena, stewards may use the measuring device to check the noseband's tightness. If the device cannot pass through, the rider must adjust the noseband to meet the standard before competing .

During Competition: If the noseband is found to be too tight during a postcompetition tack check, the horse and rider combination will be eliminated from the competition, and the rider will receive a yellow warning card .

 Applies to All Nosebands

This rule applies to all types of nosebands, including flash, figure-8, and other twostrap varieties, ensuring uniformity across disciplines .

 Device Availability

The FEI is offering the measuring device for purchase online, allowing competitors to practice and ensure proper noseband fit before competitions . This initiative is part of the FEI's broader Equine Welfare Strategy, aiming to promote fair competition and the well-being of horses across all disciplines

Equestrian sports are set to return to the Olympic stage at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, with all three core disciplines—dressage, eventing, and show jumping— confirmed for inclusion

for horses and riders, and its location in the heart of Los Angeles horse-racing country provides an exciting and fitting venue for the Olympic equestrian competitions In addition, the proximity to Los Angeles allows for greater ease of access for spectators, media, and athletes

The shift from the originally planned Galway Downs Equestrian Centre to Santa Anita Park is part of an ongoing effort to utilise well-established venues with the infrastructure needed to support such high-profile events Santa Anita, with its spacious grounds and proven track record of hosting large equestrian events, makes an ideal backdrop for the global spectacle of the Olympics

The venue is already equipped with top-tier facilities

The equestrian events at Santa Anita Park are expected to be a major highlight of the LA 2028 Games, showcasing 200 of the world’s top riders and horses in front of an international audience the breakdown by discipline remains 75 for Show Jumping, 60 for Dressage and 65 for eventing

The LA28 Olympic Games will take place 14 to 30 July 2028 and the Paralympics are scheduled from 25 to 28 August 2028. th th th th Santa Anita Park will host the equestrian events for the LA 2028 Olympics, a renowned venue in Arcadia, approximately 45 minutes from downtown Los Angeles This historic 90 year old racetrack, which has long been a hub for horse racing and was host to the 1984 Olympic Games equestrian events covers 320acres and a 26,000 seat grandstand will be transformed to accommodate Olympic-level equestrian disciplines, including dressage, eventing, and show jumping

A MOMENT OF PATIENCE CAN PREVENT A LIFETIME OF REGRET

As the days lengthen and more riders take to the roads, it's crucial for all road users to understand how to pass horses safely. The British Horse Society (BHS), in collaboration with Police Service for Northern Ireland have launched Operation Gallop, to intensify efforts to raise awareness and reduce incidents involving horses on roads

Why Safe Passing Matters

Horses are large, powerful animals with an innate flight response. Even well-trained horses can be easily startled by sudden noises or movements. A vehicle passing too closely or too quickly can trigger this instinct, leading to accidents that can result in injury or death for both the horse and rider.

Key Safety Guidelines

Slow down to a maximum of 10mph when approaching a horse

Be patient; Do not sound your horn or rev the engine.

Pass wide and slow, allowing at least 2 meters of space if safe to do so.

Drive away slowly, ensuring the horse is well clear before accelerating.

These guidelines are now incorporated into the Highway Code, reflecting the importance of equestrian safety on the roads

Alarming Statistics

In 2024, there were 3,118 road incidents involving horses in the UK, resulting in 58 horse fatalities and 97 injuries. Tragically, 80 people were also injured. A significant 81% of these incidents occurred because a driver passed by too closely or too quickly

Tools and Resources

To support these efforts, Operation Gallop has it’s own dedicated website https://www.operationgallop.org.uk/ Horse i App: Allows equestrians to report incidents directly, helping to identify high-risk areas. Ride Safe Award: A course designed to enhance riders' skills and confidence on the roads

Hi-Vis Gear: Encourages riders to wear high-visibility clothing to increase their visibility to drivers

Join the Movement

Everyone has a role to play in ensuring road safety for horses and riders. By adhering to the guidelines and spreading awareness, we can make the roads safer for all

Remember, a moment of patience can prevent a lifetime of regret. Let's work together to protect our equestrian community.

Millstreet International Horse Trials Celebrate 10th Anniversary in Style

Ireland’s premier eventing fixture, the Millstreet International Horse Trials, will mark a major milestone this year as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. The prestigious competition returns to the Green Glens Arena in County Cork, home of the Duggan family, from May 29 to June 1, 2025, and promises another unforgettable weekend of top-level sport, camaraderie, and international flair

Millstreet first stepped onto the eventing stage in 2014, hosting the FEI European Championships for Ponies. Its breathtaking setting beneath the Clara Mountain, paired with world-class facilities and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, now draws riders and teams from across the world.

Over the past decade, Millstreet has built a reputation for excellence, serving as a key selection trial for major championships. In 2024, Australian rider Christopher Burton secured Olympic selection with a dramatic win in the CCI4-S* on Shadow Man, later going on to claim silver in Paris. Stories like this reflect the calibre of competition the event attracts — from amateur contenders to elite, five-star professionals

This year’s event will once again offer both short- and long-format classes, from CCI1* to CCI4* level, catering to all levels of ambition and experience. Competitors can expect the very best in cross-country design and ground conditions, thanks to the meticulous planning of Mike Etherington-Smith, one of the world’s leading course designers known for his horse-friendly, flowing tracks. The cross-country course at Millstreet has become a model of modern eventing — challenging yet fair, and always beautifully presented.

Adding to the excitement is the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse qualifier, scheduled for Thursday, May 29. This class provides a platform to showcase Ireland’s world-renowned young sport horses, offering a glimpse at the stars of the future Millstreet’s 2025 edition will also see a truly international roster of officials, with the ground jury and technical team representing 10 nations across three continents — further proof of the event’s standing on the world stage.

Event Director Thomas Duggan reflected on the significance of this year’s edition:

“Reaching our 10th anniversary is something we’re very proud of. We’ve been working hard over the winter to ensure Millstreet continues to deliver the highest standard of competition. We’re excited to welcome the international eventing community once again for what promises to be a weekend of great sport and celebration.”
