History of Chapter & Little Miss AKA Pageant

The Xi Tau Omega Chapter was chartered on July 1 6, 1983 in Grandview, Missouri at the Mid Western Regional Conference. Since our chartering, we have provided a myriad of individual and community services throughout the Greater Kansas City community. This chapter works to implement quality programs based on community needs, while targeting opportunities to enhance the quality of lives for families and children. In July of this year, we celebrated our 39th chapter anniversary

The Little Miss AKA Pageant began in 1991 as a program with a vision of helping girls become contributing members of society focusing on self development, talent, presentations skills, socialization, community outreach, and self respect. This is one of several community service programs and our signature program for the chapter. Little Miss AKA Pageant is a 10 12 week program for 4th & 5th grade girls. This program is in its 30th year and continues to award young girls with scholarships, exposure to development opportunities, and a sisterly bond with other pageant contestants.

Little Miss AKA is a signature fundraising program that supports scholarship and other educational and advanc ement opportunities through the chapter. Some of those opportunities include our scholarship program that has been providing these awards for over 20 years. Our high school scholarship award is available to African American graduating high school seniors t hroughout the greater Kansas City area . The Janice L. Perkins Scholarship awards African American juniors or seniors at University of Central Missouri majoring in an allied health care discipline. The Frenchye C. Taylor Scholarship awards an African Ameri can juniors or seniors at Lincoln University in Jefferson City majoring in an education or math related field. Our newest scholarship awards an African American scholar from the Greater Kansas City area studying anywhere in the United States. To complimen t our 2018 2020 International Program, we also award to a scholar from Kansas City attending a HBCU.

The chapter’s community service efforts have always focused on scholastic achievement, mentoring, tutoring, literacy, promotion of health issues and info rmation, senior concerns, economic concerns, supporting the arts, and a myriad of topics and programs to benefit the Black Family within the Greater Kansas City community. Additional outreach includes voter registration and education, and awarding community advocacy and involvement grants. We hold a life membership with NAACP and have established project partnerships with numerous not for profit organizations.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded at Howard University in 1908 with the purpose to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems conc erning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind.

The Sorority is currently engaged in a 2022 2026 International Program of Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood which seeks to build upon its rich legacy of service. This mission focuses on leading on the front lines of change, education, and advocacy. We devote our talent and resources to these causes. Awareness, advocacy and action are the primary vehicles for the worldwide delivery of our service initiatives.

On behalf of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Xi Tau Omega Chapter, I am excited to welcome you to our 30th Little Miss AKA Pageant. These 21 young ladies have worked diligently over the past few months to make this special 30th pageant season an amazing experience . With the addition of an exciting new division, we are in for a special treat!

This would not be possible without the amazing contestants, parents, sponsors, families, and community partners. We appreciate your investment into the bright future of these young ladies and the Little Miss AKA program. It is our desire to cultivate a memorable experience for the young ladies to build upon their ena te gifts and abilities for their productive emergence into society

Historically, Little Miss AKA has served young ladies in 4th and 5th grades. During this special 30th pageant season, we have added the Junior Miss division serving 6 th and 7th grade girls. Throughout the 10 12 week program, the girls participate in activities that focus on self development, talent, socialization, community involvement, relationship building, and self respect. Our goal is for the participants to build and develop friendships, be exposed to new ideas, and adopt a sense of servant leadership and civic engagement

Since 1983, Xi Tau Omega Chapter has provided comprehensive community service programs in the Kansas City area that promote awareness, advocacy, and action to individuals and families in our community. With the success of these programs,

It has been an honor and a privilege to partner with the Little Miss AKA Pageant this year. Hundreds of young girls have come through the Little Miss AKA experience, and we are sure that those young girls, standing on the foundation that you have provided, have gone on to do amazing things in this community, dare we say the world!

The purpose of the Ivies and Pearls Educational Foundation is to:

• enhance the educational development for underprivileged and at risk students

• provide financial assistance to college bound students

• collaborate and establish partnerships with other community organizations to provide educational, financial, and community assistance for a specific civic or humane service program or project

The mission of the Ivies and Pearls Educational Foundation is to serve the Greater Kansas City Community by creating financial support of programs designed to enhance scholarship, community education and services, for women, youth, and families.

This partnership with the Little Miss AKA Pageant helps to extend the reach of the Xi Tau Omega Chapter as they carry on their mission impacting the futures of young people in the Greater Kansas City Area. Michael Baisden said, “Our children are a reflection of the time we invest in them and our level of expectation.” It is safe to say that Love, Sweat, and Tears that are given to these young ladies is an investment that is destined to pay off for the good of our community.

It has been an honor to be a part this historical Little Miss AKA season. This is the first year we have had two division: Little Miss AKA and Junior Miss AKA. As co-chairman for the 30th Little Miss AKA Pageant it has been more than a pleasure. Over the course of the last 3 months I have witnessed the girls grow in many ways that gave way to their unique personalities. It is my hope that they continue to grow strong in their inner beauty, creativity, drive and ambition. More importantly I want them to not only Imagine the Possibilities but know they can reach the possibilities. The committee and I are excited to present 21 young ladies shining as bright as a diamond.

This pageant season has definitely been a memorable one as a Co-Chairman, being able to interact and get to know each of the young ladies and helping each of them to shine within their own spotlight. Being at each workshop and seeing each of the girls start off as being quiet and reserved to attending weekly workshops and interacting more and actually developing relationships. Relationships that I have seen put smiles on each of their faces, helping them to evolve, and become more comfortable within their own skin.

Each of the ladies have learned an Affirmation Pledge and have recited weekly and I hope they will be able to continue to remember it, and know the value of the pledge and how it will inspire them to know that there are no limitations on their success. Each of these young ladies have put their best foot forward in learning a dance routine, incorporating each of their own personalities and bringing out the DIVA in each of them. The girls have participated in weekly girl chats, discussing topics like body images and social media. Each week, guest speakers have come and put activities together involving team building, proper/improper ways of studying, and the speakers discussing their own careers, hobbies, book writing, and having the motivation to continue to succeed. The young ladies have been taught how to walk with their heads high, big smiles on their faces, and walking with confidence as they introduce themselves and courtesy with a proper introduction, displaying confident personalities.

Each of the parents and/or guardians as well as the sponsors have been so supportive as well. Dedicating their time and effort throughout this pageant season to get the girls to workshops, events, etc. I hope with everything that each young lady has learned this pageant season will allow them to continue to grow with confidence and know they have endless opportunities.

It has been very fulfilling to work on the Little Miss AKA and Miss AKA Committee, alongside my other sorors. I would definitely like to continue working on this committee for years to come to feel a sense of fulfillment in my duty as a member of the committee.

Little Miss AKA

Miss Kennedy Taylor Johnson is 12 years old. She is the daughter of Claude and Carla Johnson. Kennedy is in the 6th Grade at Paul Kinder Middle School in Blue Springs. Kennedy is a Level 7 competitive gymnast with the Gage Center Dragon Gymnastics Team. She was 3rd place in the State of Missouri at the USAG State Gymnastics Meet with an All Around score of 36.7 out of 40.0.

Kennedy has participated in pageants since she was six years old. She recently won the National American Miss Missouri Preteen title and will compete for her second national title this November in Orlando, Florida. She held a national title with the Princess of America Pageant System as the 2020 Little Miss Princess of America.

At school, Kennedy is a straight A student and was awarded the Presidential Academic Achievement Award. She was also selected as an Ambassador at her school. She is a member of the Pep Club and the Walking Club. She is an accomplished musician. She sings, plays the piano and trumpet. This summer she recorded two vocal tracks in a recording studio. She is also in her school band.

At Paseo Baptist Church, she participates in the Children’s Ministry, where she is a soloist in the Children’s Choir and is a member of the Praise Dance Team. In her community, Kennedy created a nonprofit organization called “A Book A Day.’’ She donates books to kids who don’t have books at home. She has donated over 7,000 books. She has recently joined forces with the organization Books for Africa and has sent over 1,000 books to support programs in African countries, especially countries that do not allow girls to attend school.

Kennedy’s role model is Simone Biles because she says Simone is the greatest gymnast of all time. Kennedy aspires to go to the 2028 Olympics as a member of the USA Gymnastics Team.

During her reign as Little Miss AKA 2021, Kennedy attended the Parent Orientation and assisted the girls with learning to curtsy. She attended the Mother-Daughter-Sponsor Tea Party and performed her talent piece, “Don’t Rain on my Parade.”

In addition to being crowned Little Miss AKA 2021, Kennedy received Miss Talent, placed 3rd in the Oratorical Presentation, and is a member of the $750 Club. We wish Miss Kennedy success in all her endeavors. May you forever shine bright like a diamond.

Miss Alana Evelyn Bailey is 9 years old. She is the daughter of Kevin and Alexis Bailey. Alana is a fourth grade student at Hazel Grove Elementary, where reading is her favorite subject. Alana’s special interest is gymnastics. At school, she is involved in the Run Club and school talent show. At Trinity Temple COGIC, Alana performs interpretative dances. In her community, she participates with Girl Scouts. Alana’s role model is Martin Luther King, Jr. because he helped to fight against racism and wanted people to be treated fairly.

Miss Phaedra Brewer

Miss Phaedra Elise Brewer is 10 years old. She is the daughter of William and Patrice Brewer. She is a fifth-grade student at Saint Patrick Catholic School where math is her favorite subject. Phaedra’s special interests are reading science fiction books with girl leaders. She enjoys Hip Hop, Contemporary and Jazz dancing. Phaedra plays the violin and trombone and enjoys watching trivia game shows. At school, she participates in the Lunch Reading Club and volleyball team. She has earned awards for high scholastic honors. At First Baptist Church of Overland Park, Phaedra participates in the Youth Sunday School class. In her community, she has studied dance at Shaker Dance Academy and Kristi’s Academy of Dance. She is most proud of dancing at a Cleveland Cavaliers game and playing her violin at the Kauffman Center. Phaedra’s role model is her third grade teacher, Mrs. Boyington, because she loved their talks and they have a lot in common. Mrs. Boyington makes her feel like she can accomplish anything in the world.

Miss Elise Carter

Miss Elise Lilia Carter is 10 years old. She is the daughter of Garron and August Carter. Elise is a fifth-grade student at Hazel Grove Elementary in Missouri, where Social Studies, writing and coding are her favorite subjects. Elise’s special interests are playing the viola, coding, and writing short stories. She enjoys making crafts and ziplining, but her favorite is spending time with friends. At school, she is a member of the Student Council, safety patrol and choir. She has received numerous awards for displaying a positive attitude. Elise has also received the Optimist Club’s Super Citizen Award. Elise attends St. Monica’s Catholic Church. In her community, she is an active member of Girl Scouts and has been since kindergarten. As a member of Suburban Balance, Elise has participated in educational and cultural events to bond and build long-term relationships with other kids. Elise’s role model is Serena Williams because when Serena misses hitting the ball, she doesn’t give up but always believes in herself to keep going.

Miss Chrislynn Monae’ Cherry is 10 years old. She is the daughter of LaMar and Chrishanna Cherry. Chrislynn is a fifth grade student at Norfleet Elementary, where reading and writing are her favorite subjects. Her special interests include drawing, playing the piano, singing and dancing. Chrislynn has received Student of the Month for the past three years. She participates in the Challenge program and this year her team won $50,000 in the Burns and McDonnell Battle of the Brains competition. At church, Chrislynn enjoys singing in the choir and has also sung a duet. She enjoys attending Vacation Bible School. In her community, she sings with the Youth Chorus of Kansas City and has played on the YMCA Girls Basketball Team. Chrislynn’s role model is her mom because even if things are not going the best, her mom stays strong for her.

Miss Devynn Michelle Lucille Holmes is 10 years old. She is the daughter of Brian and Jenelle Holmes. Devynn is a fifth grade student at Manchester Park Elementary School, where science is her favorite subject. Her special interests are cooking and drawing. She especially loves to make dinner with her mom. Devynn is an avid athlete. She plays soccer, volleyball and basketball. She has received medals in soccer and volleyball. Devynn holds the record for scoring the most goals on her soccer team. At school, Devynn was in her school’s spelling bee. She was also selected to have lunch with her principal. Devynn attends Macedonia Baptist Church. In her community, Devynn is a leader and role model. Mylee’s special interests include crafting and learning to cook and sew. She has danced since age two; including competitively since age seven at Kansas City Dance Company. Chloe’s special interests are speed painting, play writing, producing films, acting, gymnastics, and cooking. At church, Chloe’ has served as a Sunbeam’s Leader and as a Little Angel. In her community, she volunteers for the Ronald McDonald House. She also donates clothes, shoes, and meals to those in need. Chloe’ has also received the Husky’s Citizenship Award for her impact on the community. Chloe’s role models are her parents because they teach and encourage her how to keep going, how to be a leader, to have confidence, be her own person, and to treat others with kindness.

Miss Kylee White

Miss Kylee Alexia White is 11 years old. She is the daughter of DeAndre White and Ashley Smith. Kylee is a sixth grade student at Academy for Integrated Arts, where math is her favorite subject. Kylee’s special interests are cheerleading, dancing, shopping, and playing the piano. Since kindergarten she has served as a Girl Scout where she learns to build campfires, participates in fundraising, and has gained numerous friends. At Swope Parkway Church of Christ, she participates in the back-to-school rallies, youth lock-ins, and Sunday School. She also enjoys inviting friends to services, studying the Bible, and volunteering to serve meals at her church. In her community, Kylee has donated clothes and toys and has volunteered at Harvester’s to bag fruits and vegetables. Kylee’s role model is her mom because she always inspires Kylee to do the right thing.
