hen Angel Nguyen, 19, chemistry major leaves his class he goes to the school library where he knows he never has issues with the internet.

On the contrary, Melanie Chavez, 23, English major prefers to use her cellular data over the campus Wi-Fi because she says her phone is faster.

The college understands that students depend heavily on Wi-Fi while at EC, Assistant Director of Information Technology Services, William Warren said.

The college also understands the growing frustration the students are feeling when they can’t connect, are dropped repeatedly or experience slow speeds.

“It doesn’t work well. I can’t get a Wi-Fi signal anywhere but near (the) Math and Science Buildings,” Ryan Uyehara, 17, engineering major, said.

With the growing number of people carrying around multiple devices every day, over 2,000 devices connect to the campus Wi-Fi during the day time hours.

“When the Internet was first established on campus, not every student had a cell phone, laptop and/or a tablet. Today people carry up to three devices and each one wants to jump on the Wi-Fi even though you can only use devices one-at-a-time,” Warren said.

On Sept. 4, IT Services began “accessing each building as to what it will take to bring in higher density Wi-Fi,” Warren said. “Higher density means to cover zones that don’t have coverage or zones that should have coverage but don’t right now.”

President Tom Fallo has notified the Board of Trustees that he wants to upgrade the Wi-Fi using bond funds, Warren said. They are currently undergoing a building-bybuilding assessment to determine what is needed to retrofit the older buildings.

The board must weigh the cost of upgrading internet in an older building, that is slated for future demolition in a couple of years, or do minor upgrades until the building is rebuilt.

Once the assessment is complete then careful investment into the Internet infrastructure can be made.

It is much easier to upgrade the Internet in brand new

buildings because they are building from the ground up with open walls and floors and they can wire the entire structure to current Internet standards.

Upgraded areas and access points around the campus include: Student Services, Behavioral Science, Student Activity Center, and the Library.

When compared to another campus, EC covers the least amount of zones around campus. According to Santa Monica College’s website, “over 95 percent of the main campus and off-campus sites have wireless coverage.”

Warren said staff and student Wi-Fi are basically the same and they are both secured networks that require signing in.

They are separate networks because if there is an issue with the Wi-Fi, the student’s Wi-Fi can be temporarily shutdown without interfering with the staff’s ability to continue to work.

Student robbed at gunpoint in Lot F

Sept. 3, 1:18 p.m.— A student went into the police lobby and told a dispatcher that he was just robbed at gunpoint in the upper level of Lot F 15 minutes ago. Officers responded to the location while the victim gave the dispatcher more information.

The student told the dispatcher that he was sitting in his car when two men approached the driver’s side of his car. The student said that one of the men showed him a silver handgun and demanded the victim’s valuables. The student complied with the man.

The suspects left northbound on foot toward Manhattan Beach Boulevard. The incident is under investigation.

Board edges closer to interviews, selection of new college president Roy Garza

A

s President Tom Fallo moves into retirement at the end of the calendar year, El Camino has been searching for his successor, with plans for appointment of the new president in October.

EC has put together a search committee to find a new president, made up of faculty, community, and ASO members; just a few of the 21 people who were named at the board of trustees meeting back in April.

The board of trustees will ap-

point the new president, and Vice President of the board Ken Brown spoke about what the board is looking for in potential candidates.

“Someone who will help grow our district, someone who understands the community. We have one of the most diverse districts in the state,” Brown said.

The process of finding the new president is currently in the middle stages. The search committee has already met three times, and will be interviewing and selecting finalists on Sept. 11-12, according to a timeline on the El Camino website.

called for a special board meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 16 to discuss the final step in the process, the board interviews/forum.

“The board will handle all the logistics for the forums,” Vice President of Human Resources, Linda Beam said.

The forums will be open to the public and are a “place for the students to meet the candidates,” Beam added.

The public forums are scheduled for the week of Sept. 28. The board will determine exact dates for interviews during their special board meeting next week, Beam

said.

EC has also enlisted the help of the Community College Search Services (CCSS) firm to search for potential candidates.

According to their website, “CCSS executive search consultants are highly experienced and successful community college leaders who are now dedicated to assisting districts in identifying, recruiting and hiring top-level executives for a college or district.”

CCSS Managing Partner, James Walker, spoke at the board meeting on Sept. 8, and has been working very closely with the commit-

tee.

“It’s been a pleasure working with the committee, they are a group of hard-working individuals,” said Walker.

Walker is not at liberty to disclose any candidates’ information, which is confidential.

All committee members have signed non-disclosure agreements, meaning they’re legally bonded to not speak about the selection process.

“We received an above average number of candidates, and the candidates were of excellent quality,” Walker said.

Student with warrant yells at faculty member Sept. 4, 8:25 a.m.— Officers responded to the MBA Building for a disturbance. According to the report, when officers arrived a faculty member told officers that she saw a woman, who was a student, talking very loudly to herself. The faculty member told the student to lower her voice, but the student became irritated and began yelling back. Officers asked the student to come outside of the building and the student complied. The officers then discovered that the student is a transgender man. When officers ran the student’s name, the student had a warrant for his arrest from Pasadena Police for assaulting a police officer. The officers attempted to put the man into custody when he resisted arrest. The officers were able to place the man under arrest and transported him to Pasadena Police.

Catalyic converter theft in Lot H Sept. 8, 10:50 a.m. — An officer responded to the police lobby for an attempted theft report. According to the report, a staff member told the officer that someone tried to steal the catalytic converter from her Honda CRV that was parked on the south side of Lot H. There are no security cameras in that area.

There’s a time all young people face, when they have to decide what they want to do with their lives.

For Ann Garten that moment came when she was sitting in her high school guidance counselor’s office, at Sacred Heart Academy, an all girl Catholic high school, in Springfield, IL. She knew she was passionate about writing and it came easy to her.

So, she decided she wanted a c reer where she could write. Her parents worked hard to send her to college and as a first generation college student she didn’t want to waste her education. She shared with her counselor that she wanted a career where she could support herself and have a comfortable life.

She thought about going into journalism until she looked at the salaries and she didn’t know if she could live off that. That’s when her counselor told her about public relations. Garten started looking into it and never looked back.

“I started looking at colleges and at that time there weren’t a lot of colleges that offered a major in Public Relations and Southern Illinois University happened to be one of them, so I went there,” Garten

said.

Currently, Garten is the community relations director and she oversees the public relations and marketing department for the EC. The “department does all the publications, is responsible for the website, social media, news releases, basically all of the marketing and advertising for the college,” Garten said.

Before she came to EC she worked in private industry where the days were similar, however when she made the switch to education she found that she enjoyed it more.

“I never worked in private industry more than three years,” Garten said. “One of the things about this field is your never going to have the same day two days in a row and I like that, something different everyday. I like the interest, the challenge.”

In the 15 years she has been working for EC a highlight in her career was passing two facilities bonds.

“In 2002 we passed the first bond and in 2012 we passed the second bond. It was so exciting because we’re able to see this campus transform for the students,” Garten said.

“She writes the campus newsletters, which is critical in keeping the community informed,” Chief of Police, Michael Trevis said.

Construction of the new $40 million Murdock Stadium is set to be completed by the end of the year.

Construction is underway on a $40 million Athletic Education and Fitness Complex at El Camino that will replace Murdock Stadium.

The landmark stadium had beeon campus since 1949 and was named after the founding president, Forrest G. Murdock.

On a recent tour of the new complex, Tom Brown, director of facilities, said the new 8,000-capacity stadium is more than halfway complete.

“Construction is expected to be done by the end of the year,” Brown said. “The project is 65 percent done.”

The modern training facility will have a field made of synthetic turf for football and soccer. Randy Hartman, program director for Lend Lease corporation, said the new complex will support various facilities including an indoor swimming pool and a gymnasium with a full sized competition basketball court.

“We have a lot of teams on different projects,” Hartman said.

“You always would like things

to be a little faster, a little quicker but it’s going really well.”

Other upgrades include a running track and field facility, as well as state of the art athletic training rooms. John Schaible, construction manager for Lend Lease corporation, said in a month they will have field prep going on. is expected to retain its name and continue to host EC graduation ceremonies.

“The plan is to be done before graduation and have the ceremony in this stadium,” Hartman said.

The return of winter session is still in the works for 2017, after the college cut winter session two years ago and replaced it with multiple summer sessions.

Winter session was canceled in 2013, at the time of its cancellation, EC had met its quota of full-time enrolled students, Claudia Striepe, academic senate co-president said.

“It was a minor feeling, not shared by all, that the winter sessions where too short and didn’t have the same academic rigor,” Striepe said.

While there is no actual winter schedule yet, the Calendar Committee will be having their first meeting this month to discuss the winter 2017 schedule.

The Calendar Committee will need to create a possible winter schedule. That schedule will then be given to President Tom Fallo, who will then make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees, who have the final word, Jean Shankweiler, vice

president of academic affairs said.

“The process to create a winter schedule and a spring schedule could not be completed in time for 2016,” Outreach and School Relations Director, Robin Dreizler said.

“It seemed like the best thing to was to do it right than to do it fast,” he said.

The return of winter session is expected to help increase enrollment at EC, which has seen a decrease in the amount of students.

“Enrollment is down due to various reasons,” said Striepe “Some students leave to colleges with winter sessions and stay there once they decide they like it there,” Striepe said.

The start date for summer sessions does not correlate with high school graduation dates; that plus the lack of ability to pick up extra credits in winter definitely limits some students and lowers enrollment, Dreizler said.

“Last semester more than 100 sections were canceled due to low enrollment,” Striepe said.

UP FOR DEBATE Should the smoking ban be enforced?

Smoking ban should be gone or modified The board of trustees voted at its

Feb. 17 meeting earlier this year to ban smoking on campus.

There are two main problems I have with the whole ban in general.

First of all, according to the ban, smoking on campus is prohibited, but there is nothing to actually stop people from smoking, and secondly, the ban disregards smokers in general. Finally Phil Sidavong we’ll compare it to other bans on campus.

Features Editor Smoking may be banned on campus, but @ECCUnionPhil if a police officer walks by a smoker, they cannot give them a ticket and if they tell them to stop, there is no consequence for continuing to smoke.

What good does a ban on something, that affects hundreds, if not thousands of students and faculty, do if it does not pose a consequence for users?

Not to mention, the blatant disregard to the rule itself, there are people who still smoke on campus, and it has been about seven months since the approval of the ban.

It wasn’t even an unanimous vote to ban smoking on campus. It was a 3-2 vote for the five board members, and the student trustee added in a fourth vote to ban it.

Although the student trustee vote does not count to the overall vote, that vote just represents the ideas of the Associated Student Organization (ASO).

There aren’t that many smokers on campus, compared to the population of non-smokers, and this ban disregards smokers in general.

What about placing smoking areas on campus? There were talks about it. Yet, the ban goes through, but smoking areas don’t get a second chance, or thought?

Finally, let’s bring up the fact that skating on campus is prohibited, due to the chance of causing accidents. But police officers drive their vehicles on campus, maintenance workers use their carts to get around campus more quickly and yet students riding skateboards causes concern.

My point there is that if we have a legitimate ban as a citable offense on skateboards, with exceptions to other types of vehicles on campus. So why not a ban that issues a ticket, or something similar, if we are going to ban smoking, with exceptions, for example, smoking areas.

The ban isn’t good enough, but I can see that there are ways to improve it, or change it altogether.

Give power to the smoking ban Last semester, the El Camino College board of trustees voted to ban smoking on campus, however people continue to smoke regularly and there needs to be a stronger push to curb smoking.

According to Board policy 3570, EC prohibits the use of “cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, snuff, snus, water pipes, pipes, hookahs, chew and any other non-combustible tobacco product” on campus.

If there is to be a smoke-free environment on campus like the policy calls for, then the smoking ban must be added to campus regulations.

As of now it is an educational ban that only advises students not to smoke, rather than a law that invites punishment.

ECPD police chief Michael Trevis said in an email that officers are taking an approach to “warn and seek voluntary compliance” rather than cite students on the spot.

If students are being ticketed for things like skateboarding, then they definitely need to be cited for smoking, which already is an offense in other public places.

According to the student code of conduct, only “Willful or persistent smoking in any area where smoking has been prohibited” is an offense.

Secondhand smoke is associated with negative health effects, and students shouldn’t be exposed to smoke when going to class.

“Smoke Free” signs are posted all around campus, but signs are everywhere at EC and students might not even notice them amongst all the other posters.

Students are busy people, you need to throw something in our face if you really want us to listen.

The concept of a citation would do a lot to hinder smoking, and students would have a viable reason to not smoke on campus. The current educational ban has proven to be too soft in reducing campus smokers.

If the police started ticketing smokers on the spot, then awareness would spread across campus and EC students could get behind the ban as well.

There are people who like to smoke and they shouldn’t be looked down upon, but it needs to be clear that EC is a public place like any other, and smoking is not welcome in or around the classroom.

Different hotspots can only handle so much traffic at a single time.

L.A. County should not ban festivals because of the carelessness of others. The owners of the events are already making changes for the betterment of the people.

Music festivals like Together As One (TAO) and Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) used to thrive in L.A. County until they were banned and sent to Las Vegas according to YourEDM, a website aimed at music festival news.

But with the imposing dangers of drugs and deaths at these music festivals, L.A. County would like to ban these events entirely, according to YourEDM. They will be regulated more heavily now in other places across the country, from Ultra Music Festival, in Miami, to the various other EDCs like Orlando and New York.

Tens of thousands of people flock to these events every year and the organizers make an incredible profit for themselves, for the DJs and even for the venue owners, so L.A. County would lose the opportunity to make money because someone died.

This past August, two girls died due to drug overdoses at the HARD Summer music festival at the Pomona Fairplex, which is one of the main catalysts for banning festivals.

One of those young girls who passed away was a classmate of mine in high school and though I, very respectfully, would like to give my thoughts and prayers to her family and close friends, it

does not change the fact that she overdosed and was responsible for her actions.

She took it a bit too far when she was trying to enjoy her experience, but others who seek to enjoy the experience at an event, close in proximity, should not suffer.

A lot of people do drugs, smoke marijuana, or drink alcohol at festivals and similar events while trying to listen to the music and enjoy their favorite artists. People are the ones taking the risk when they use these drugs to heighten their experience.

Most festivals strictly prohibit the use of drugs, but people still take drugs before going in or sneak it in. Also, people who are 21 just buy alcohol and get drunk.

There should be more done for the safety of customers at these events, and there should be more employees and EMTs walking around in case these young people take it too far.

People have died many times before during other festivals and events. Just because a couple of young girls died at HARD Summer, they want to change and take the music scene from L.A County.

If L.A. County officials wants to ban music festivals it can, but losing out on so much would be a waste, considering the fact that organizers will pay large sums of money not only for the venue, but for the profit from ticket sales.

El Camino is gearing up for a big change. The college is looking for a new head as current president Tom Fallo is set to retire after 20 years of service.

EC opened up the position earlier this year and invited people to apply for the important position.

The president of the college is the key decision maker and holds a lot of power within the college structure.

As part of the search, the college will be hosting forums for the finalists during the week of Sept.

28. These forums are important for the college community.

The forums will be a place for students, faculty and community members to hear the candidates sell themselves to the college. It

will also be a place for the community to ask vital questions of the candidates.

As part of the forum, the college community will be able to evaluate the finalists. This will be the applicants first impression to the community.

It’s important for community members, faculty and students to show up at the forums for this rare opportunity to be able to ask the next president of their college questions.

Another college, such as Cerritos College, which recently named a new president, hosted community forums for the candidates, which were live streamed and later posted on the college’s YouTube channel.

The Union is published Thursdays by Journalism 11 students at El Camino College, 16007 Crenshaw Blvd., Torrance, CA 90506, and is free to the student body and staff.

The open forums provide an open government feeling, instead of choosing the next president without any community involvement. Although it may be inconvenient for many to have a separate forum for each candidate, it’s necessary to have the forum for community engagement.

The Board of Trustees, presidential search committee and Community College Search Services made a good choice by deciding to hold community forums that allow the finalist to introduce themselves and answer the community’s concerns.

Despite the sticky air and extreme heat reaching the 90s, the summer has come to an end. And with it, came some of the year’s most highest grossing blockbusters — some breaking all-time box office records.

There’s no doubt that 2015 was a big summer for movies, as the season raked in over $4 billion in box office sales, according to Deadline, which is the second highest in earnings overall.

The Union selected a few of the summer’s top performing movies, based on critical and box office suggestion, and let El Camino’s students decide which were the biggest hits.

In first place, with 35 votes, comes “Jurassic World,” the true,

and long overdue, sequel to Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic.

“Jurassic World” didn’t earn the most glorious of reviews, but it did make Universal Studios a ton of money. So much, in fact, that it globally and domestically became the third highest-grossing movie, according to Box Office Mojo.

“Jurassic World” was able to offer everything you could expect from a typical summer blockbuster. Like any other, it had the cheesy one-liners and generally flat characters. But towering over its flaws were the stunning visual effects.

“Straight Outta Compton” came in a solid second with 32 votes.

The biopic on the famed N.W.A. hit hard with passionate and nostalgic fans with smooth direction and outstanding performances.

“It was pretty forward,” Solomon Kanehailu, 18, film major, said. “It really represented the hood.”

Tied for third at 16 votes are Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

When com32 pared to “Fury Road,” “Age of Ultron” dominated the box office. Simply because it’s a PG-13 sequel blockbuster in an era where comic-book movie adaptions rule the film industry.

However, suffering from a more convoluted storyline and sequel fatigue, “Age of Ultron” scored less enthusiastic reviews than “Fury Road.”

It was riddled with all the huge set pieces and superhero fun you’d expect, but Miller’s “Fury Road” succeeded as an octane-filled action flick and an artistic piece of cinema simultaneously.

While the two fall into similar categories, they’re very different

movies tailored for fairly different audiences.

While they didn’t make the final cut, honorable mentions — including Pixar’s “Inside Out” and the Tom Cruise-led “Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation” — provided

more than enough entertainment and pulled enough heartstrings to earn a good word of mouth.

Until Sept. 30, the library will be home to a photo gallery that exhibits an array of images submitted by the South Bay Camera Club.

According to its website, the SBCC is a group for photographers to share their mutual interests in the hobby of modern photography.

“The majority of the photographs (in the exhibit) reflect the Modernist photographic perspective that began with photographers such as Paul Strand and Ansel Adams,” Darilyn Rowan, photography professor, said.

“The subject matter includes portraiture, environmental portraiture and landscape work,” Rowan added.

The exhibit provides a wide variety of photographs that suit the taste of most audiences.

Donna Shumaker’s photo, “Bobcat Running from Coyote in Snow,” captures a bobcat in the snowy forests of Yellowstone National Park.

Mellisa Gonzalez, 19, respiratory care major, took a liking to this photo and many other portraits including animals.

thing that has to do with animals,” Gonzalez said. “I rescue animals for a living.”

Gonzalez and her brother’s girlfriend rescue stray animals from the streets and house them until a new home can be found.

Other animal portraits include Karen Beatty’s “Charging Bear,” Don Sandersfeld’s blackand-white “Hippos” and Robin Young’s wide-angled shot of a red fox hunting in Yellowstone, “Red Fox - Hunting.”

“There is a wide range of approaches within the subject matter,” Rowan said.

“To me the theme is the wide angle of visual interpretations of the figure and landscape through a modernist photographic approach,” she added.

To the untrained eye, the exhibit is more of a collection of art captured by the SBCC, rather than an art gallery conveying a certain message or theme, but it still warrants speculation for a deeper meaning.

Whether it’s the characteristics of modern photography that prompt conversation or personal connections that evoke emotional responses, the SBCC exhibit at the Schauerman Library provides images for a variety of tastes in art.

When “The Sixth Sense” came out in 1999, director-screenwriter M. Night Shyamalan immediately became the new face of horror. He basked in the glory and rubbed shoulders with the big wigs, after being nominated for two Academy Awards.

Fast forward almost two decades.

Shyamalan has now become a director who has to answer for cinematic debacles like “Lady in the Water” and, dare I say it, “The Last Airbender.”

Written and directed by Shyamalan, “The Visit” isn’t necessarily the redemption song he wanted, but it’s a pretty damn solid return to the genre filled with scares, humor and, surprisingly, raw emotion.

But “The Visit” is riddled with cliches and tropes we’re all familiar with. A single mother (Kathryn Hahn) sends her two kids, Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenbould), on a week-long getaway at their grandparents’ house after years of disconnection — she ran away from home 15 years ago.

Nana and Pop Pop’s (Deanna Dunagan and Peter McRobbie respectively) house has a basement that’s off limits, a shed that’s wildly suspicious and poor cell reception.

And, let’s not forget, that “The Visit” is found-footage horror — a subgenre that’s been milked and wrung more than the merchandising for Pixar’s “Frozen.”

“The Visit,” however, takes this format and executes it with swift, sweet justice. Save for a few impressive establishing shots, it looks like the movie was shot by kids.

Cinematographer Maryse Alberti intentionally doesn’t shoot with the tracking and handheld prowess of Emmanuel Lubezki, but she doesn’t strap a GoPro to a dog’s tail either.

The format will never be as fresh or original as it was in “The Blair Witch Project” or “Paranormal Activity,” but it’s refreshing to see that Shyamalan’s taken it, and himself, back to square one.

Besides not being terrible, “The Visit” is pleasantly chockfull of surprises. False scares are almost non-existent, the actual scares are teased with the right amount of tension and it really does pack an emotional punch.

And yes, being a M. Night Shyamalan film, there’s a twist, and you barely see it coming. It may not be as hardhitting as “The Sixth Sense,” but it’s, thankfully, not as ridiculous as telling Joaquin Phoenix to, “swing away.”

“The Visit” doesn’t necessarily bring Shyamalan back to his heyday. But it does prove that found footage can still be effective, and stellar directing in “The Sixth

El Camino falls to Ventura College in a shootout

El Camino took a 58-52 lead on a 32-yard field goal by freshman kicker Nathan Hierlihy with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

Ventura marched down the field in 11 plays to the Warriors 15-yard line. Pirates quarterback Brandon Jones connects on a 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Riley Smith with 15 seconds left on the clock to give Ventura a 59-58 victory over the Warriors in a wild shootout at the Sportsplex in Ventura on Saturday.

“I’ve been here since 1985 and we’ve been in great football games,” Coach John Featherstone said. “Saturday night’s football game was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever had the opportunity to coach. Not only coach but just to be there and watch it unfold.”

EC sophomore quarterback Jorge Hernandez had a big night, completing 37 of 54 passes for 602 yards and six touchdowns with only three interceptions, as well as recording a rushing touchdown.

“El Camino has more All-American quarterbacks than anybody else in the country,” Featherstone said. “What Jorge did the other night was spectacular. He was just on fire against a good team.”

Hernandez threw three first half touchdowns, including a 72-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver William Moorehand, as the game went into halftime tied, 24-24.

Moorehand caught two scores in the first half and finished with 10 receptions for 291 yards and three touchdowns. Fellow freshman wide receiver Stevie Williams caught six passes for 80 yards and a touchdown.

“It was a disappointing loss,” Williams said. “We did so much to stop them and on offense every time they scored, we scored. We just tried to compete with them.”

Freshman wide receiver Russell Shaw, a Hamilton High School alumni, added five receptions with 73 yards and a touchdown.

Both schools combined for 1,425 yards of total offense, according to scfafootball.com.

“It was one of those tough losses but I think the kids grew up,” Featherstone said. “You have to give Ventura credit. They found a way to win.”

The Warriors are back in action when they host Saddleback College Saturday at the Redondo Union High School field at 5 p.m.

Warriors’ cross-country opens season at Palomar Invite Roy Garza

The faces were tired, with sweat dripping down from all over as each girl kicked it into high gear finishing the three mile race.

El Camino had a tight pack, with all five scoring runners placing in the top 20 overall.

The El Camino men’s and women’s cross country teams each started its seasons Friday at the Palomar Invite in Oceanside, where the women placed third and the men finished sixth last Friday.

The women came in third out of nine teams (65 points), behind Santa Ana on a tiebreaker (65 points), and Orange Coast (48 points).

The Warriors were led by sophomore Hannah Griffie, who finished 11th overall with a time of 21:50.

“It was hard, it was hot. It wasn’t my best time but I was happy with it overall,” Griffie said. “I feel like we did good as a team, better than last year.”

Griffie was followed by Xiomara Perkins (12th; 22:00), Jennifer Villarreal (13th; 22:25), Judith Torres (14th; 22:31), and Jaquelin Rodri-

guez (16th; 22:44) rounded up the top five.

“I think that this is a good prequel to what’s to come, because we’ve never finished so close to each other so I think we’re going to have a good season,” Griffie said.

Coach Dean Lofgren was impressed with the performance from the women.

“The women had been running very close together, and they did today and that was their main strength,” Lofgren said. “Third in that field was quite good, the two teams ahead of us are two of the highest ranked in southern California and in the state.”

Lofgren’s team came into the race ranked 11th and 14th for the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, according to cccaasports.org EC ran a young team on the men’s side Friday, with all five runners who scored points for the Warriors being freshman.

“The guys are quite inexperienced, all of them are running their first four mile race,” Coach Lofgren said.

David Hodges led the way for EC, placing 15th overall with a

22:31 time, followed by Solomon Kanehailua (16th; 22:37), Chance Weston (35th; 23:24), Michael Moody (38th; 23:31), and Jacob Helfgott (42nd; 23:42) to complete the top five.

“I felt all right, it’s a good starting point to see where I’m at and to see where our team is at,” freshman Kanehailua said.

The Warriors had five women and two men earn medals on Friday, where the top ten freshman and sophomores won medals in each race.

Coach Lofgren was encouraged by the team’s start, and believes the team will get better as time goes on.

“There’s a lot of room for us, for improvement, and we will, once they get some experience,” Lofgren said.

The Warriors will compete again Friday, Sept. 18 at the Southern California Preview Invitational in Mission Bay, San Diego.

“It’s the site of the SoCal championships,” Lofgren said. “Virtually every team in Southern California will be there. There could be up to 35 teams in one race, it’s going to be huge.”

Women’s volleyball places second at Cerritos

B

eing down 23-20 in the first set did not stop the women’s volleyball team from attempting to come back and take the momentum against Cypress College.

A Warriors three-point run tied the game at 23 and forced a Cypress College timeout.

The timeout did not help Cypress as El Camino closed out the set 2523 taking a set lead 1-0.

But after dominating all weekend, only losing one set in four matches, the women’s volleyball team fell to Cypress College in four (25-23, 17-25, 23-25, 18-25) and claimed second place in the Cerritos Tournament on Saturday.

After two matches, the Warriors did not come out with enough energy to overcome the opponents, Coach Le Valley Pattison said.

“They weren’t consistent,” Pattinson said. “Our side was kind of tired on an emotional level.”

Freshman outside hitter Taylor Brydon led the team with 11 kills followed by sophomore outside hitter Kezia Boyer’s nine kills.

Boyer also led the team in digs with 14 followed by sophomore libero and co-captain Brooke Russell’s 12 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Skyler Ceballos found a lot of play time during this weekend and thought the team performed well.

“We did really well I thought,” Ceballos said. “We need to work a lot harder and focus on talking a lot more and maybe get some revenge (on Wednesday).”

Russell thought there were things the team needed to work on for the future.

“We need to work on our energy,” Russell said. “We have to come out on fire. (Cypress) had a lot of energy and really put the ball away.”

On the way to the first place game, the team had a rematch with Santa Monica College (25-16, 2519, 25-23) and a revenge match against College of the Canyons (25-13, 25-12, 18-25, 25-19).

Sophomore middle blocker Jewel Yandall was brutally honest in her opinons of her opponents. “(Santa Monica) was more ready, and they put up a better fight (compared to the first match-up),” she said. “(College of the Canyons) was good, I think they played their best. Their best just wasn’t enough.”

The Warriors will host East Los Angeles College for their first conference game of the season on Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. in the South Gym.

The men’s water polo team lost against Fullerton College Wednesday with a final score of 25-4 to start off its season 0-1.

During the third quarter of the game, the Warriors struggled to catch up to Fullerton’s 20-point lead.

Although EC was able to gain access to the ball and score after Fullerton failed to take the shot before the 35-second buzzer, Fullerton was able to maintain their 21-point lead.

There were a lot of new players to the game, EC coach Corey Stanbury said.

“We have a couple of people who are learning the game for the first time,” Stanbury said. “They got an introduced to the game in a real situation and played a decent team.”

Stanbury said that he feels his players learned a lot more about counter-attack and how to plan for different situations during the game.

“We are a young team and they are a young team,” Price said. “We made mistakes that other teams won’t make and we’ll find ourselves on the other side if that scoreboard.”

There were a few good moments from the Warriors that stood out to Stanbury during the game.

“In the first quarter, we had a situation where we had a nice pass to someone who stepped out of the set and scored a nice cross-gauge goal,” Stanbury said. “We did some good defense a couple of times.”

In order to better the team for the next game, Stabury said that they will have to focus on any problem areas at practice.

“In practices, we can see where we have weak spots and try and work on those and get better,” Stanbury said.

If they continue to do things right in practices, the team will continue to improve and will start doing more things right in the games, Stanbury said.

The Warriors’ next men’s water polo game will be at Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
