A WAKE UP CALL

One fateful night in December, I was sound asleep when I suddenly heard someone loudly knocking on my bedroom door and calling out my name, “Alexa! Alexa!”. I was confused and wondered to myself, “Who could be waking me up so late at night?”. It was then that I noticed the objects surrounding me were shaking strongly when I woke up. It took me a moment to realize that it was an earthquake! It was my mother too who was urging me to go out.

I stood up and quickly opened the door to follow my mother and brother. We hid under the wooden table in the dining room and waited for the shaking to stop. I was certainly surprised by how strong the earthquake was for I was used to the weaker ones. After some time had passed, the tremor then finally came to a stop for a while. Just when I thought it was over though, another one hit us - an aftershock of the previous one perhaps.

Fortunately, it wasn’t as strong. So, now I was thinking to myself, “Why is this happening? All I want is to go back to sleep…” When the second one had finally stopped, I checked the surrounding areas in our home to make sure we were safe. Afterwards, I went back to lie down on my soft bed, and to my surprise, slept like a baby. It seems that I didn’t think much of it at the beginning…Which was something I gravely underestimated.

In the morning, an announcement was made that classes for that day were suspended. However, what I didn’t know was that a series of aftershocks and small earthquakes would occur at random times of the day for the next few days. I was then made aware that the frequent earthquakes had affected the entire Mindanao region, causing more significant damage elsewhere. The buildings and malls had developed cracks, causing injuries to other people. According to preventionweb.net, the strong ground shaking caused significant structural damage, liquefaction, landslides, sea-level disturbance, and tsunamis in the Philippines.

Many Filipinos were concerned about the reason for these tremors, fearing that they might be a sign of something bigger to come. Worried as well, I searched my phone for information on the repetitive earthquakes. According to DOST-PHIVOLCS, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit Surigao del Sur on December 2nd, 2023. The earthquake was caused by the subduction along the Philippine Trench. As of December 3rd, 2023, there were 819 aftershocks ranging from magnitude 1.4 to 6.2 recorded by the DOST-PHIVOLCS Philippine Seismic Network. It was also stated there that we could expect moderate to strong aftershocks in the epicentral area. These aftershocks could persist for several days to months, and some may also be felt in nearby provinces.

I was completely taken aback after reading this update from PHIVOLCS on their website. Just imagine, 819 aftershocks? The fact that there are recurring earthquakes is alarming and raises concerns about a possible calamitous event in the future that could affect all Filipinos in the Philippines. It's like the calm before a storm. As a result, the schools in Butuan had to switch to an online setting for about a week.

During our online class in Science, our teacher, Mrs. Krishna Budias, provided us with a detailed explanation of why the earthquakes occurred. She also emphasized the importance of being prepared for such natural disasters by making emergency kits and planning escape routes in our homes ahead of time.

It certainly is crucial to be aware of the steps to take before, during, and after an earthquake to ensure safety. Ignorance of this matter can have severe consequences, it may cost you an arm and a leg… literally! So, here are some necessary tips to help you be better prepared for an earthquake.

F E A T U R E

According to ready.gov, you have to first make an emergency plan. It is important to create a family emergency communications plan that includes an ‘out-of-state’ contact. In case you get separated, it is crucial to plan where to meet. Hopefully, you won’t lose your way and get lost. Additionally, it is recommended to make a supply kit that contains enough food and water for several days, a flashlight and portable radio with extra batteries, a first aid kit, extra clothing, and a whistle. However, taking these steps is only the beginning of earthquake preparedness. Are we truly prepared for earthquakes now? Do we really know how to "duck, cover, and hold" correctly. According to the Office of Emergency Management from Crook County Oregon; during an earthquake, duck down quickly and take cover under sturdy furniture, or against an interior wall. Avoid dangerous spots like windows, hanging objects, mirrors, and tall furniture. Then hold on to the furniture until the shaking stops and it's safe to move.

Moving on to after an earthquake! As stated by Civil Defense NZ, one needs to expect many aftershocks. According to them, you have to take care of yourself and seek first aid if necessary. If an earthquake happens again, remember to drop, cover and hold. Check for damages at home or work, and evacuate immediately if the building is unsafe. Watch out for fallen power and gas lines outside and do not enter damaged areas. Listen to the radio for emergency information and instructions, and help those who need it if you can.

It seems like we may face another earthquake soon, and if it's stronger, it could be dangerous. Therefore, we need to stay alert and cautious wherever we are. But I sure hope I won’t wake up in the middle of the night anytime soon because of another shaking of the earth!

Within the corridors of our beloved alma mater are outstanding individuals who not only embody the essence of leadership but also radiate a profound sense of determination in serving the school. One such individual in our institution is the esteemed school president of Enfant Cheri, Mrs. Flora L. Aurea. While we may have seen her countless times on our school premises, her journey of how she became the respected figure she is today is relatively unknown.

Mrs. Flora Lamoste Aurea was born on the 10th of October 1962 in Maribojoc, Bohol but was raised in Bukidnon, where she grew up in a bustling household as the youngest of 7 siblings. During her poignant childhood, Teacher Flora used to have lots of fun playing games like "Taguan" and "Shatom" with the other kids in her neighborhood. As a child, she also enjoyed playing "Bahay Bahayan" using banana leaves and would walk a certain distance to enjoy a dip in a waterfall with clear water.

She already understood early on the importance of sharing and making the most out of limited resources. Food was scarce during her childhood. Her siblings would share small, dried fish, and be appreciated by their parents if they could even leave a piece of it for the next meal. This lack of food never fazed her. Growing up in hardship allowed her to be strong and determined throughout elementary to high school. Every morning at 4:00 AM, she would help her brother sweep the marketplace and clean the mayor's office to earn money for the day's “baon”. She would also gather fruits before going to school and offer them to her well-off classmates in exchange for sheets of paper. Little did she know, however, that these trials would merely serve as stepping stones toward a greater purpose that God had planned for her teaching.

As a teacher, her education journey was not without its twists and turns of course. Becoming a teacher was not her first choice for her High School Mathematics teacher influenced her to take an engineering course in college. But her elder brother, who had promised to support her college pursuit, passed away before her high school graduation, so she was left without a choice but to grab the chance to be an academic scholar in the nearest Teacher Education Institution (TEI).

Her first two years as an Elementary teacher at a private school in Cagayan De Oro City weren’t at all rewarding, though she gave her best to her pupils. In her first year, she handled a class of 56 Grade 3 pupils, and 63 Grade 5 pupils in the second year. As a result of her hard work, she suffered from a hoarse voice almost every Wednesday and no voice at all on Thursdays and Fridays. Teacher Flora couldn’t even imagine how she managed to complete two school years with her mind still intact. What kept her going though you may ask? It was the absolute need to earn a living because, to her, passion for education just comes alongside especially when you work with children.

A door opened for Teacher Flora, together with three dedicated teachers - Teacher Rose, Teacher Nelly, and Mrs. Nila Quieta, a retired District Supervisor - to establish a school of their own. They wanted to create a school where they could make a significant impact in education and produce students who could compete with learners from big colleges and universities in the country and overseas. These four determined teachers created policies that aimed to help Cherians become better individuals intellectually, morally, and spiritually. The stellar journey of Teacher Flora and her dedicated colleagues to establish this era for our alma mater.

After more than three decades of growth at Enfant Cheri, Teacher Flora certainly witnessed improvements in both facilities and teacher training, a distinct contrast from earlier years. Alongside her dedicated colleagues, Teacher Rose and Teacher Nelly, they remain steadfast in their dedication to see to it that their Vision and Mission will not be distorted but strengthened as the years go by.

However, amidst this undertaking, Enfant Cheri also encountered significant challenges, particularly financial constraints especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when the school’s savings were depleted. Every payday they prayed hard for financial provision for the salary of the employees, and God was indeed there as the great provider. The teachers worked long and hard, and salaries were on time every 15th and 30th of the month. While other schools closed, Enfant Cheri survived the difficulties brought by the pandemic. Despite the hurdles they encountered along the way, their resolute faith and resilience indeed supported them through it.

Perseverance no doubt is what brought Teacher Flora to becoming the respected individual she is now. Along with this, her early experiences infused in her a deep understanding of resilience and resourcefulness. She continues to embody these values as a loving wife, devoted mother of three, and an inspiring educator. These values not only sustained her through the toughest times but also shaped the growth of Enfant Cheri, developing an environment where accountability and responsibility are paramount. For over thirty years, Enfant Cheri has indeed made a positive impact on the community which helped students excel not only in academics but also in the values they were taught and will continue to be carried with them wherever they go.

“Do what is right even if others don’t, even when no one is looking”, is a motto that Teacher Flora wishes to see in every Cherian who walks through the halls of our beloved alma mater. To us students embarking on our educational journey, Teacher Flora's message resounds clearly in our minds: persevere in your studies, continue to do what is right, and never lose sight of your dreams. There may be stumbling blocks along the way, but God allows them to build our patience, humility, and strong faith in Him.

Teacher Flora's odyssey, from humble beginnings to her esteemed role as the school president of Enfant Cheri, represents the capabilities of perseverance and integrity. Alongside the efforts of the faculty and staff of our school, she remained steadfast in her dedication to education. With this, she imparts to all of us Cherians a bible verse with a valuable lesson—--Galatians 6:9; “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Unfair Rice Price Surge: The Toll on Filipino Lives

The escalating rice prices in the Philippines have become a significant concern amidst other national issues, profoundly affecting daily life and economic stability. A stark example is seen in Bicol, where rice prices recently surged from PHP 60 to PHP 75 per kilo. In contrast, Mindoro reports more stable but still elevated prices ranging from PHP 55 to PHP 60 per kilo. These increases make it challenging for many Filipinos to afford an essential staple food.

The rise in rice prices has sparked widespread debate and dissatisfaction. "The government always states that there is work, our production has increased, but the price remains very high; it has increased even more," explains Cathy Estrella, voicing a common frustration among Filipinos who find the situation increasingly untenable. In response to these challenges, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has announced plans to boost local production and supplement it through importation, aiming to stabilize prices. DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel has reassured the public that the combined volume of imported and locally harvested rice will meet consumer and retailer needs until at least March this year.

However, unpredictability remains a significant factor, as highlighted by DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel. He noted that rice prices are challenging to forecast, especially with the El Niño phenomenon

affecting major rice-exporting countries like Vietnam and Thailand. This climatic event exacerbates the volatility of rice prices, driven by complex global and economic factors.

President Marcos has committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure an adequate and reasonably priced rice supply. His administration is focused on maintaining stability, particularly as rice price fluctuations have the potential to cause widespread unrest. Despite these assurances, the rice price issue continues to be a pressing concern for many Filipinos. It underscores broader economic vulnerabilities and affects the daily lives of millions. As the situation develops, it becomes increasingly clear that supporting local agriculture and fostering resilience against global market shifts are crucial for national food security.

For individual Filipinos, the crisis presents an opportunity to support local producers and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable food system. By choosing locally grown rice, consumers can help strengthen the domestic agriculture sector and mitigate some of the impacts of global price increases.

While the challenges are daunting, collective action and strategic policy responses could pave the way toward a more stable and secure rice market in the Philippines.

For a bright future

In the midst of the obstacles in learning and teaching, Vice President and Education Secretary Sarah Duterte addressed the challenges effectively. She focused on improving the educational system to cultivate responsible and hardworking Filipino citizens while enhancing the delivery of basic education services. This initiative aims to ensure a progressive and positive educational environment, encouraging students to excel and perform better.

The MATATAG Agenda was launched to support students and educators in overcoming the challenges they face daily. Promoting the Matatag Agenda not only enhanced the DepEd curriculum but also contributed to creating a more conducive learning environment for students and teachers alike. These reforms also established a Procurement division within DepEd to expedite the provision of services and learning resources. Additionally, 2,201 classrooms, 880 health facilities, and 1,127 classrooms were constructed as part of these efforts.

The MATATAG Agenda provided students with more opportunities to engage in the Digital World by expanding internet connectivity in public schools, giving them increased access to explore and participate in digital learning. In January 2023, machine arrivals were introduced into the schools. Currently, 25 schools have Starlink connections, and 2,000 schools now have satellite connectivity. Furthermore, the DepEd is introducing Digital Education Learning Carts known as "Computer Tab on Wheels," equipped with laptops, charging stations, and interactive displays.

the DepEd's implementation of reforms under the Agenda has provided students and teachers with more ease in learning and teaching by introducing a variety of new and improved facilities. These enhancements have offered them the opportunity to develop more skills and talents, unlocking their full potential and enabling them to engage more deeply in their learning journey.

The promotion of the Matatag Agenda has significantly impacted many lives, enhancing the learning and development of students and teachers, as well as improving the overall learning environment. It has empowered them to advance their educational quality and experience a more organized environment.

"WE

Some argue that the Matatag Agenda has not made significant differences, as some individuals continue to face challenges throughout their learning and teaching journey. According to Duterte, "We all know that the road will be bumpy, but our direction is clear. We understand that the challenges are significant, but we Filipinos are resilient. We will overcome."

This statement emphasizes the resilience of Filipinos in the face of adversity, highlighting that despite tough circumstances, there is always a clear and secure goal to strive for. Change is a gradual process, and even though it may seem difficult and temporary, with patience, the day will come when progress is achieved.

Sarah Duterte has certainly left a memorable impact on many Filipinos. While the Matatag Agenda may not have been her largest project, it is undoubtedly very impactful. The Matatag Curriculum has provided students and teachers with more opportunities to discover and unlock their talents and skills, allowing them to explore their capabilities further.

Learning has been a challenging journey for many students and teachers. It has not been easy for many. The education system has already seen improvements, and now it is time to focus on shaping a bright future. Your potential is already within you, but it is your choice how you nurture it, find it, and allow it to shine.

DO NOT NEED BULLIES TO FIGHT ANOTHER BULLY". - HOUSE

DEPUTY MINORITY LEADER FRANCE CASTRO

Sigalot sa laot

"We do not need bullies to fight another bully".

'We all know that the road will be bumpy, but our direction is clear We understand that the challenges are significant, but we Filipinos are resilient WE WILL OVERCOME '

- Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, House Speaker

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

TECHNOLOGY: RESHAPING

GOVERNMENTS AND SHIFTING POWER DYNAMICS

With advances in technology in the modern era, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer just a concept confined to the realms of science fiction. Today, AI is being integrated into business operations around the globe, reshaping corporate governance.

Throughout history, the numerous advances and breakthroughs in the field of technology have influenced not only our lifestyle but also the changes in our institutions and the way we govern our societies. From the simple printing press to the Industrial Revolution, these advances have always preceded institutional changes Now we stand on the brink of the Digital Revolution, and the idea of "software eating the state" has become widespread.

Today, we are witnessing “The Digital Revolution” – a period marked by the rapid advancement of digital technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT). All these innovations are greatly changing our way of interaction and government In the Modern context, the government acts as an “application programming interface (API)”. As APIs enable software systems to interact, the government acts as an intermediary between the people and the mechanisms of governance It is through them that order is maintained in the society

One of the key aspects of this revolution is the democratization of information around the globe Social media platforms have given individuals unprecedented influence It is because of this that ideas and movements can reach a global scale overnight. In turn, it has become challenging for the government to regulate the flow of information and manage public sentiment

With the advancement of technology, changes in government functions and structures are unavoidable Firstly, the government has begun to adopt digital tools to improve citizen engagement. This is essential to make interactions with the state more efficient. Secondly, to tackle the issues with cybersecurity, new policies are being implemented to protect citizens' digital rights Lastly, the use of AI and automation has become more prevalent, especially in healthcare and transportation. While this does improve efficiency, it raises questions related to job displacement and ethics

Technology's continued disruption of political power structures has made it clear that power between nations and society is shifting The ability of individuals to spread and influence public discourse is growing, and the government must find new ways to maintain order and legitimacy in this increasingly digitalized world

The usage of AI can lead to improved decisions with more accurate outcomes. While traditional corporate governance methods rely on human intuition, AI can augment this using data-driven insight. AI can easily analyze vast amounts of data, facilitate real-time monitoring, offer predictive insights to boards, and enable scenario planning. All these combined can improve leadership within the company.

AI can revolutionize risk management by utilizing advanced algorithms to avoid risks more effectively. Through this, AI can analyze internal and external factors for possible risks, predict the likelihood of such scenarios, assess the potential impact of such risks, and, most importantly, provide improved and more efficient mitigation strategies.

Compliance with regulations is also critical in a company. AI can automate routine tasks like data collection, identify compliance issues, and proactively address measures for any regulatory risks.

With AI becoming integrated into a company's corporate structure, the company must prioritize an ethical framework, ensuring transparency, accountability, fairness, and the absence of bias. This ensures a healthy work environment for both stakeholders and workers.

Overall, AI integration into a company allows for improved efficiency, more accurate decision-making, and regulatory compliance. However, companies must strive for a more ethical AI culture, ensuring responsible leveraging of AI's potential to unlock new opportunities and drive sustainable growth in this digital era.
