El cultivo de la caña de azúcar, implantado en estas fértiles tierras por los árabes, y que se prolongó a lo largo de más de mil años es, a día de hoy, la verdadera seña de identidad de nuestra ciudad.

Sugar from faraway lands Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum), native to New Guinea and other areas of South-east Asia, is the result of the hybridisation of different species of the genus Saccharum, which acclimatised to the lands of India and China more than 2000 years ago.

Azúcar de lejanas tierras La caña de azúcar (Saccharum officinarum), originaria de Nueva Guinea y otras zonas del sureste asiático, es el resultado de la hibridación de distintas especies del género Saccharum, aclimatándose en los territorios de la India y China hace más de 2000 años.

La expansión del Islam y la influencia socio-cultural musulmana importó la especie a la cuenca mediterránea desde las lejanas tierras orientales alrededor del siglo X, según nos cuenta el filósofo cordobés al-Razí, adaptándose perfectamente al clima de la Costa Tropical de Granada.

El incipiente cultivo cañero va consolidándose y su consumo, así como sus derivados, van introduciéndose en los hábitos alimenticios de la sociedad aunque todavía se trata de un artículo de lujo.

En torno al siglo XIII se produce la denominada “segunda expansión”, cuando su consumo se generaliza, al tiempo que se produce el descubrimiento del producto en Europa, manteniéndose este auge económico como poco hasta finales del siglo XV.

The spread of Islam and the Muslim socio-cultural influence played an active role in the introduction of the species into the Mediterranean Basin from faraway oriental lands around the 10th century. According to the Cordovan philosopher al-Razí, sugarcane adapted perfectly to the climate of the Tropical Coast of Granada.

The emergent sugarcane crop established itself in parallel with its consumption and the consumption of its derivatives, which were introduced gradually into the eating habits of society, although they were still luxury goods.

The “second expansion” of sugarcane took place around the 13th century. During this period its consumption became generalised and it was discovered by the rest of Europe. This economic boom would continue until at least the end of the 15th century.

En los albores del siglo XVI la expansión azucarera se implementa en las tierras de unos pocos nobles granadinos y en las destinadas a bienes públicos mientras que la mayoría de la población local se dedica al cultivo para su consumo familiar.

At the turn of the 16th century, the expansion of sugar was established on the lands of a few noblemen of Granada and on government-owned lands, while the majority of the local population worked in farming the crop for household consumption.

Son tiempos convulsos debido al nuevo dominio castellano y a las tensas relaciones que se producen durante todo el siglo. Tras la expulsión de los moriscos, las clases dominantes ven en la actividad azucarera una oportunidad de negocio aprovechando para ello las infraestructuras previas que el mundo musulmán había dejado en el ámbito agrícola.

These were turbulent times due to the new Castilian domination and because of the tense relations that lasted throughout that century. After the expulsion of the Moriscos, the dominant classes saw an opportunity in the sugar industry and took advantage of the agricultural infrastructure that the Muslim world had left behind.

El siglo XVII consolida el monocultivo azucarero, contribuyendo la buena marcha económica al desarrollo urbanístico y al aumento demográfico de la ciudad.

In the 17th century the consolidation of sugar monoculture contributed to rapid urban development and a demographic boost for the city.

Años inciertos

Uncertain years

El florecimiento de la industria azucarera hasta el siglo XVIII arrastraba lastres que lo harían tambalearse. El agotamiento y no evolución de un sistema junto con los problemas de deforestación producidos por la sobreexplotación de los recursos vegetales para el abastecimiento de leña así como la aparición de heladas en años sucesivos hicieron necesaria la diversificación en los cultivos, llevando casi a la extinción a la caña de azúcar a comienzos del S. XIX.

The flowering of the sugar industry had carried with it burdens that would cause it to collapse by the 18th century. The exhaustion of the land and the lack of an evolved system, together with problems of deforestation caused by the overexploitation of natural resources for providing wood, and also the frosts that took place during several consecutive years, made necessary the crop diversification that led to the near extinction of the sugarcane at the beginning of the 19th century.

Hacia la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, la industrialización del azúcar, gracias a los avances tecnológicos como la máquina de vapor, junto con la mejora de las comunicaciones mediante la creación de grandes infraestructuras, posibilitan un notable auge económico. Familias adineradas de la ciudad de Motril invierten en este nuevo sistema de producción que se mantendrá hasta entrado el siglo XX. Así pues, en 1907, Motril contaba con cinco fábricas dedicadas a la producción azucarera: Ntra. Sra. de las Angustias, conocida como “La Fabriquilla”, Ntra. Sra. de Lourdes, Ntra. Sra. del Pilar, San José y San Fernando, construyéndose en la década siguiente las de Ntra. Sra. de la Almudena y la de San Luis.

Towards the second half of the 19th century, technological developments such as the steam engine and the improvement of communications through the creation of infrastructure on a grand scale had caused the industrialisation of the sugar industry and a notable economic boom. The wealthy families of Motril invested in this new production system that would continue until the 20th century. That is how, by 1907, Motril had five factories dedicated to producing sugar: Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, known as La Fabriquilla (‘the small factory’), Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, Nuestra Señora del Pilar, San Jose, and San

Paisaje cultural Al margen de la actividad económica propiciada por la industria del azúcar, es indudable que las grandes extensiones de cultivos de caña se convirtieron en una seña de identidad de la ciudad de Motril y de gran parte de la Costa Tropical de Granada, representando el paisaje cultural por excelencia a lo largo de más de mil años.

Pese a que las fábricas motrileñas finalizaron su actividad, en los años ochenta, la pervivencia de la última fábrica de azúcar de caña de toda Europa, situada en la localidad vecina de Salobreña -La azucarera de Ntra. Sra. del Rosario- posibilitó el cultivo de caña de azúcar en Motril, manteniéndose actividad y paisaje hasta el año 2006, cuando tuvo lugar la última molienda.

Cultural landscape Apart from the economical activity promoted by the sugar industry, it is unquestionable that the great expanses of sugarcane crops had become a hallmark of the city of Motril and of a greater part of the Tropical Coast of Granada, representing its cultural landscape par excellence for more than a thousand years.

Despite the closing of the Motril factories, one factory in Salobreña, Nuestra Señora del Rosario, stayed open during the eighties, being the last cane sugar factory in all of Europe, and allowed the cultivation of sugarcane in Motril until in 2006, when the production and landscape finally disappeared.

Centro de Interpretación de la Caña de Azúcar

Sugarcane Interpretation Centre

La caña de azúcar es el hilo conductor a través del cual el visitante conocerá los aspectos botánicos, las distintas variedades utilizadas, los procesos industriales utilizados en la obtención del azúcar y otros derivados como el Ron, todo ello enmarcado en el contexto de una ciudad como Motril, que fue capital europea de este producto. El Centro cuenta con dos salas de proyección audiovisual que complementan la visita, así como una pequeña plantación de cañas.

Sugarcane is the connecting thread of the exposition, through which the visitors will get to know the botanical aspects of the different breeds used, the industrial processes used during sugar extraction and the production of other derivatives such as rum, all within the context of Motril, a city that was the sugar capital of Europe. The Centre has two audiovisual projection rooms that complete the visit, as well as a small sugarcane plantation.

Museo Preindustrial de la Caña de Azúcar Se levanta sobre los restos arqueológicos del antiguo Ingenio de La Palma, uno de los más importantes de Europa entre los siglos XIII y XVIII. Mediante elementos didácticos multimedia se recrean las condiciones de producción del azúcar con reproducciones de una gran prensa de madera o de un molino hidráulico que se complementan con paneles didácticos, maquetas y proyecciones audiovisuales que convertirán la visita en algo único.

Preindustrial Sugarcane Museum It is built on top of the archaeological remains of the old Ingenio de La Palma (ingeniois the Latin American name for a sugar factory), one of the most important sugar factories in Europe between the 13th and the 18th century.

The sugar production techniques are recreated through didactical multimedia displays; there are also two reproductions, one of a great wood press and one of a waterpowered mill, all of this complemented by information panels, mock-ups, and audiovisual projections that will transform the visit into a unique experience.

Museo de Historia de Motril Situado en un bellísimo edificio restaurado del siglo XVII nos ofrece un paseo por la historia de la ciudad de Motril desde la prehistoria hasta la época contemporánea. La caña de azúcar, su origen y llegada a nuestras tierras y su importancia como actividad económica a lo largo de casi mil años, ocupa un lugar muy importante en este museo en el que además podrá conocer mucho más sobre otros aspectos históricos del territorio.

Motril History Museum Located in a beautifully restored 17th century building, it offers a tour through the history of the city of Motril from prehistory to contemporary times. Sugarcane, its origins, its arrival to our region, and its economic importance for over a thousand years play an important role in this museum. Almacén del Azúcar Esta imponente sala de exposiciones toma su nombre de la anterior función del edificio ya que era el lugar donde se almacenaban los sacos de azúcar producidos por la Azucarera Ntra. Sra. del Pilar. Se trata de un espacio diáfano de 800m2, que alberga exposiciones temporales, y que conserva la techumbre de madera original y que comunica sus dos plantas mediante unas escaleras de madera y cristal.

The Sugar Warehouse This important exhibition room takes its name from the previous purpose of the building; it was the place where the sugar bags produced by Nuestra Señora del Pilar Sugar Factory were stored. It is an open space of 800 m2 that holds temporary exhibitions while preserving its original wooden roof, and communication between its two floors is via wooden and glass stairs.

Nave de los Arcos. La Fabriquilla Sala de la antigua Fabriquilla, situada en la zona Este de la ciudad; en la actualidad es un espacio municipal destinado a albergar diversos eventos y exposiciones.

La Reserva Natural Concertada de la Charca de Suárez es el humedal más importante de la Costa de Granada y representa el último vestigio de la gran marisma que existió en el delta del Guadalfeo hasta principios del siglo XIX. Como referente de lo que fue el cultivo tradicional de la caña de azúcar, existe una plantación en uno de sus senderos que se complementa con panelería y cuadernos informativos.

The Protected Nature Reserve of Charca de Suárez is the most important wetland of the Coast of Granada and represents the last remnant of the great marsh that existed in the Guadalfeo delta until the beginning of the 19th century. In memory of the sugarcane crop tradition, there is a plantation on one of its trails that is complemented with information panels and booklets.

Bodega Ron Montero El Ron con nombre propio de la Costa Tropical se elabora en la única bodega de ron abierta al público de todo el continente europeo, situada entre el Mediterráneo y Sierra Nevada. Un viaje a través de los sentidos le permitirá conocer su historia y su proceso de elaboración.

Actualmente la bodega está en proceso de ampliación, lo que permitirá contextualizar más profundamente la caña de azúcar y la cultura que la rodeaba.

Ron Montero Distillery The rum bearing the name of the Tropical Coast is produced in the only rum distillery open to the public on the entire European continent, and is situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierra Nevada. It is a trip through the senses that will allow the visitor to learn about the history and the process of the production of Rom Montero. Currently, the distillery is in the process of expansion, which will allow it to display more fully thecontext of sugarcane and the culture that surrounded it.

Fábrica del Pilar Construida en la periferia oeste de Motril en 1881 representa el máximo exponente en cuanto a patrimonio azucarero industrial de toda la ciudad. Sus grandes dimensiones junto con la maquinaria de gran valor histórico que todavía conserva en su interior, nos muestran la importancia que tuvo esta fábrica hasta 1984, año de su cierre. Por estos motivos es el emplazamiento elegido para el futuro museo industrial del azúcar.

El Pilar Factory It was erected on the western outskirts of Motril in 1881 and today it represents the greatest exponent of the sugar industry heritage of the city. Its great dimensions, together with the machinery of great historical value that is still kept inside, show us the importance of this factory until 1984, the year it closed. For these reasons, it was selected to locate the future industrial museum of sugar.

FĂĄbricas de San Luis y Ntra. Sra. de la Almudena Los vestigios de ambas fĂĄbricas, construidas en 1910 y 1912 respectivamente, se encuentran situados en el denominado camino de Minasierra en la zona occidental del municipio, en un entorno de plantaciones subtropicales. Ambos complejos fabriles se encuentran abandonados en la actualidad y dedicados a otros fines pero desde el exterior pueden observarse sus chimeneas y parte de sus instalaciones.

The San Luis and Nuestra SeĂąora de la Almudena Factories The remnants of both factories, built in 1910 and 1912 respectively, are located on the so-called Minasierra road, in the western part of the municipality, surrounded by subtropical crops. Both factory facilities are abandoned nowadays and are used for other purposes, however their chimneys and part of the facilities can be observed from outside.

A pesar del inmenso patrimonio industrial azucarero con que llegó a contar la ciudad de Motril, hasta nuestros días solo han llegado unos pocos testigos de Fábricas tan importantes como la Azucarera de San Fernando, La Alcoholera, Ntra. Sra. de Lourdes o San José. De las dos primeras, se mantienen en pie las imponentes chimeneas, que forman parte del skyline motrileño, junto con algún edificio en el entorno del Cerro de la Virgen. De Ntra. Sra. de Lourdes quedan un par de naves de la antigua fábrica, que en la actualidad son parte de un complejo hostelero, y del conocido como Ingenio de San José del Varadero, en el Puerto de Motril, encontramos una sola nave de la misma tipología constructiva.

Witnesses of the sugar heritage In spite of the huge sugar industry patrimony that Motril came to possess, today we only have a few witnesses to prove it, namely the sugar factories of San Fernando, La Alcoholera, Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, and San Jose. In thecase of the first two, the magnificent chimneys are still standing; today they are part of Motril’s skyline. Together with a few buildings in the area of the Hill of the Virgin of the Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, there are still a couple of naves of the old factory that nowadays are part of a hotel resort. Finally, of the so-called Ingenio de San Jose del Varadero, in Motril’s Port, we find a nave of the same structural typology.

Casa de La Palma Esta casa señorial que se levanta sobre un ingenio azucarero del siglo XVI, toma su nombre del comerciante genovés Lucas Palma, quien fuera propietario de la misma. Presenta una estructura en forma de “U” en torno a un gran patio central y en su interior podemos encontrar un artesonado mudéjar de gran belleza. En la actualidad es la sede de la Biblioteca Municipal, el Archivo histórico y también de la Universidad a distancia (UNED).

La Palma House This majestic house, which was built on top of a sugar factory from the 16th century, takes its name from the Genoese trader Lucas Palma, who was the owner of the house. It has a U-shaped structure with a big yard in the middle, and inside we can find a Mudejar coffered ceiling of great beauty. Nowadays it is the headquarters of the Municipal Library, the Historical Archive, and the National University of Distance Education(UNED).

La construcción del teatro Calderón en 1880, responde a la necesidad una burguesía adinerada gracias a la industria del azúcar, de distinguirse del resto de la población como muestra de su ascenso social. Su exterior discreto y bien integrado en el entorno urbano, contrasta con su interior, de estilo neoclásico y profusamente decorado. Tiene planta trapezoidal y tres pisos con palcos, plateas y cazuela divididos por columnas, y un patio de butacas central.

Calderon Theatre In 1880 the Calderon Theatre was built as an answer to the needs of a bourgeoisie that had become rich thanks to the sugar industry and that wanted to distinguish itself from the rest of society by a display of its social ascent. Its discrete exterior, well-integrated with the rest of the urban surroundings, contrasts with its interior, which is in the neoclassical style and is profusely decorated. It has a trapezoidal ground floor, three floors with box seats, stalls, and an upper area divided by columns, along with the central seats.
