We will soon celebrate by far, the biggest and one of the most important feast days of the year and that is Passover. You may recall that Passover lasts for a total of 7 days with the first and last days being holy during the Hebrew month called Abib. This typically happens during the months we more commonly know as either March or April. You may also remember that we can’t eat any food with leavening in it for 7 days.
PASSOVER
Now why is Passover so important?
This feast talks about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Resurrection means to rise from death to life. When Christ died for us it gave us grace. What is grace?
Grace is the time and chance we have to repent for our sins and obey God so that we can win eternal life. To repent is when you are truly sorry for all the bad things that have caused you to disobey God and you decide to not do those sinful things again.
CHRIST THE LAMB
When we think of Christ during Passover we compare Him to a lamb. Why is that?
Let’s think about what a lamb is like. It is a gentle and meek animal that is typically white. White means to be pure and clean without anything that is dirty. Think of Christ. He is pure and has no sin in Him. Sin is like dirt. Christ also is gentle, that is, he is kind and caring, especially towards His children. Jesus is also meek. To be meek means you are willing to listen and obey. Jesus is God but He always gave glory and honor to God the Father who is greater. He obeyed the Father’s will and that was for Christ to come down on this earth and die for our sins.
ANIMAL SACRIFICE
In ancient Israel, before Christ came to this earth, the priests were commanded to kill certain animals to pay for mistakes or sins that Israel made. These were known as animal sacrifices. Some of these animals includes bulls, goats, turtledoves, pigeons and of course sheep. These animal sacrifices represented the major sacrifice that Christ was going to make later on in time and that was His life He gave up for us. Once Christ died and rose from the grave, we no longer had to sacrifice animals. His sacrifice was far better and greater than any animal sacrifice that could be made.
CHRIST’S BLOOD
We need Christ’s blood in order to be saved. During communion, you notice that we drink grape juice. This represents the blood that Christ shed for our sins. We have to drink Christ’s blood daily. Don’t worry. I’m not saying you have to drink His actual blood in a cup. We drink His blood in spirit, when we study the word of God and obey His commandments. Christ is the word of God. Our obedience to Him makes Him a part of our lives everyday. And that is how we drink His blood daily.
MORE ON BLOOD
Let’s think about what our blood does for us. Blood is your body's superimportant delivery system, bringing oxygen and yummy nutrients (like fuel) to all your cells for energy, taking away yucky waste (like carbon dioxide),
fighting off germs with its special police (white blood cells), and even keeping you warm. Wow! Our blood can do a lot. Well guess what?
Christ’s blood is far better than ours. His blood has amazing powers in it. His blood can bring forth eternal life by removing yucky sin out of our lives.
Isn’t that amazing?!
UNLEAVENED BREAD
For seven days, we have to eat unleavened bread. Leavening includes ingredients like baking soda, baking powder or yeast that causes bread to rise and grow. Unleavened bread does not have these type of ingredients and are typically more flat. God commands us to eat this type of bread because of what it means. During Passover, leavening, represents sin. When your parents remove the leavening from your home during this feast it can be compared to you removing sin from your life. Unleavened represents a life without sin and the body of Christ.
UNLEAVENED BREAD
Christ, as you have learned, is perfect and without sin. Just like grape juice, we also eat unleavened bread during communion. You know we cannot literally eat Christ’s body. But when we read our bible lessons every day this is like feeding on the word of God. If you can recall the testimony we read every Sabbath, the spirit of hunger and thirst. “Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.” This is very important. God wants us to always read the Bible, study and look for His truth. Just as food or in this case, unleavened bread, nourishes and makes you feel good when you eat it, the word of God makes us feel good and nourishes us spiritually when we study it daily. Amen.
