Patras 28/9/2019 Saturday morning A Roman structure: Engineering at its best! Stability, beauty and harmony. The ruins in medieval times, were used like any other building, and turned into new uses.

Rome if full of them! But, not anymore.

Sketching in Patras with architecture students. First stop is the Roman Odeon. A restored building with magnificent thick roman-brick walls and arches, with some remains of marble cladding.

The public space of the Roman city. Where people meet. The theater is facing south, turning its back to the sea and facing the sun. The Roman engineer vs. the ancient Greek architect. The Greek respected the landscape and combined the architecture to the natural topography of the hill. Without massive construction, like the Roman structure – which sits on flat ground and creates the slope with arches and walls. The building is the product of engineering, regardless the landscape. Is this the end of sustainable design?

Patras 28/9/2019 Saturday morning Thoughts about Patras.

The city is disconnected from the sea. The main square and main arteries, are all looking in. Not out. There is no seafront connected to the main square.

Unless you look for it, the sea is not present in the experience of the city.

The grid of the city: how do you create an ideal city, with an ideal city plan, when you have to deal with real topography? San Francisco had to cope with this dilemma.

First we visited the Roman Odeon at the top of the hill, then the Gerokostopoulou steps, as a space of transition between the higher point to the city with glimpses to the sea, and then the market. We moved in space, topography and time. Great!

Patras 28/9/2019 Saturday morning The arcades are great! Modern and past. The market is like a modern ruin for the city. It is not very old, yet it lacks a roof and is like an abandoned space in the city – used but not well maintained.

So, we are looking at a modern ruin with classical elements – the arcade – with the Ionic capitals. I really liked them! Ruins in the city are like pockets of repose to intense urbanism. We escape from urbanity by going to nature and to the ruins in the city. The Roman Oden combined both. The agora was just a ruin. We escape the present by going to the past…

Πάτρα 28/9/2019 Πλατεία Γεωργίου Γεωμετρίες· Μαθηματικές σχέσεις που συνθέτουν τον χώρο που ζούμε. Καμπυλόμορφα στοιχεία που εγγράφονται σε ορθογωνικά σχήματα και αντίστροφα. Η αποτύπωση της κατασκευαστικής αλήθειας σημαίνουσα. Η προσαρμογή αυτής στην πραγματικότητα του πατραϊκού κέντρου εξίσου σημαντική. Καμάρα – Δοκός επί στύλων. Συνύπαρξη επιτυχής που ενισχύεται από τα ενδιάμεσα στοιχεία. Γεωμετρικές σχέσεις. Χωρική γοητεία. Κατερίνα Τεμπέλη

Πάτρα 28/9/2019 Στα Σκαλάκια Γεροκωστοπούλου Χρώμα· Αίσθηση που δημιουργείται στον εγκέφαλο από μέρος της αλληλουχίας των ηλεκτρικών ώσεων που φθάνουν σε αυτόν μέσω του οπτικού νεύρου. Βουνό – Θάλασσα – Πόλη. Η ζεύξη είναι επιτυχής· Αρχικό μέλημα μια γραμμική πορεία που περνάει από το ένα στοιχείο αρμονικά στο άλλο. Η απόδοση της αίσθησης του χώρου επίσης μέλημα. Η συνύπαρξη με την φύση σημαίνουσα· Η αλληλουχία εικόνων μέσα στην ίδια την εικόνα δημιουργεί κλίμα πληρότητας και οι χρωματισμοί δε μπορούν παρά να το ενισχύσουν. Πάτρα 28/9/2019 Ρωμαϊκό Ωδείο Εξερευνώντας τα μέρη που επισκεφθήκαμε συνειδητοποίησα τι πραγματικά μου τράβαγε την προσοχή έτσι ώστε να το αποτυπώσω στο χαρτί. Όλη αυτή η διαδικασία ήταν μια ευχάριστη εξάσκηση για το μάτι και κατ’ επέκταση για το χέρι. Ζωγραφιά Ζαραβέλη

Για εμένα ο τρόπος που έπεφτε η σκιά πάνω στα κτίρια, η αρμονία του φυσικού τοπίου με την αρχιτεκτονική της πόλης και γενικότερα κάποια ιδιαίτερα αρχιτεκτονικά στοιχεία αποτελούσαν σημεία παρατήρησης και μεγαλύτερης μελέτης. Ζωγραφιά Ζαραβέλη

TRAVEL SKETCHBOOK : PATRAS

Recipient of research and publication grants from – among others Graham Foundation, WMF and the Getty Grant Program. Founding chairman of international NGO ECOWEEK. Elias’ sketchbooks are being written and sketched since the late 1980s and include sketches, drawings and notes from his travels in cities in Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Elias’ sketchbooks have been exhibited at the Yale Art & Architecture (USA, 1990), the Athens College Theater (Greece, 1995), the Jerusalem Theater (Israel, 2002), and the Israel Museum exhibition ‘Journeys’ (2014-2015).
