Another issue of Cameroon Traveler Magazine packed with information, guides and photos. We promised from the start to show you Cameroon like you have never seen. This is another step toward that objective, and we are just gearing up. We will continue with our quest to uncover more excitement, beauty and curiosities that we will share with you throughout our journey. The last issue mainly covered the Nguon Festival. We have received high praise for this coverage and will continue to explore ways of covering many more of such events. In this issue, we aimed to show you beautiful creatures by taking you through the Seme Beach beauty pageant contest, the competition that promises to uncover the next mermaid or fairy; that woman who will make Cameroon beaches irresistible. Many African Americans shared with us the stories of their journey back to their roots (Cameroon). We also bring you the night scene by the way of an interview with the most prominent and creative DJ in Cameroon, DJ Pat Cool. We have visited some of our airports and offer some insight to tourist destinations such as Makon in the Northwest Region, the Metche Falls etc. You may also find useful some information on passport renewal, visas and embassy addresses.
Bienvenue! Un autre numéro de Cameroun Traveler Magazine pleine d’infos, des guides et de photos. Nous avions promis dès le début de vous présenter le Cameroun comme vous ne l’avez jamais vu. Ce numéro est une étape supplémentaire vers notre objectif, et nous ne sommes qu’au début de notre parcours. Nous comptons continuer sur notre lancé afin de vous apporter plus splendeur, de beauté et de curiosités pendant le périple que envisageons long et mémorable. La dernière édition de notre magazine nous a conduit à Foumban ou nous avons assisté au Festival Nguon. La couverture de cet imposant évènement nous a valu des éloges aussi bien des personnalités que des potentiels visiteurs de notre pays. Ceci nous encourage à explorer les voies et moyens qui pourront nous permettre de couvrir plusieurs autres festivals dans l’avenir. Dans le numéro courant, nous avons voulu vous montrer les belles créatures en vous promenant sur les plages de l’Hôtel Seme Beach, à l’occasion du concours de beauté « Miss Beach », la compétition qui a pour ambition de dénicher la prochaine sirène, cette femme qui rendra les plages du Cameroun irrésistibles. Nous vous proposons également les scènes de nuit, par la voie d’un entretien avec l’un des DJ les plus en vue, et le plus créatif au Cameroun à l’heure actuelle. What is the best place for a panoramic view of Yaounde? CTM choses the slopes of Mount Eloumdem! Known as the city of seven hills, Yaoundé is full of spot where beautiful panoramic snaps could be made. For starters, the tip-top of each of the seven hills could be used. The skyscrapers that define the skyline of the Cameroonian capital could be used as well. The ideal spot for a breathtaking panoramic snap of the city remains the slope of Mount Eloumdem. This place is located a few hundred meters from the Hotel Mont Febe the city’ only golf course and near the entrance of the Cameroon Museum of Arts (Benedictine Monastery of Mont Febe). Here you will have a panoramic and mesmerizing view of our capital.

Refugiés ou nomades… Ils ont aussi besoin d’éducation C’est à pied qu’ils vont et rentrent de l’école. C’est à peine s’ils prennent un bout de pain en y allant. Le comble est qu’ils se retrouvent dans des salles de classe avec des camarades qui semblent vivre dans un confort remarquable. On peut de ce fait imaginer à quoi, ces enfants partis de la République Centrafricaine, du Tchad, du Congo Kinshasa ou de Brazzaville s’exposent. Vol, kidnapping, mais surtout désertion des salles et école buissonnière. On peut également dire selon des observations faites–à l’Est Cameroun notamment–que ce sont des enfants de familles nomades. Ils ne sont pas tous des enfants réfugiés. Au sein de ce groupe, on trouve aussi des Mbororos. Issus de la même socioculture, l’on peut comprendre pourquoi le taux de déperdition scolaire annuel chez les élèves réfugiés et nomades est très élevé. Il faut pourtant atteindre les objectifs du millénaire en matière d’éducation. Et au Cameroun, l’éducation pour tous en 2035 est l’une des priorités du document stratégique pour la croissance et l’emploi (DSCE). Ainsi, depuis 2005, La Refugees Education Sponsorship Programm Enhancing Communities Together (RESPECT) antenne du CAMEROON apporte son soutien multiforme aux élèves et enfants réfugiés. Les objectifs de cette organisation consistent à réduire le retard scolaire accusé par les élèves refugiés, à tisser des liens d’amitié entre refugiés et les autres, à sensibiliser et à mener le plaidoyer tout en aidant et en appuyant directement ces élèves. L’enfant refugié ou nomade a besoin d’une mise à niveau afin que son intégration dans le système scolaire s’effectue normalement. Pour ce faire, RESPECT a mis sur pied le projet ANICUR (Accompagnement et Nivellement du Cursus Scolaire des Réfugiés). Il va s’agir de créer un cadre d’accueil et d’identification des lacunes des élèves refugiés du cycle primaire, d’orienter et offrir des cours de remise à niveau aux élèves du primaire arrivés au Cameroun selon les niveaux, et enfin placer et/ou réinsérer ces élèves dans le système scolaire officiel du Cameroun. Au sein de l’organisation et même chez des bénéficiaires de Mandjou à l’Est Cameroun, on espère toujours le soutien des âmes de bonne volonté. RESPECT a « l’espoir de trouver parmi vous des appuis pour pouvoir travailler à la réduction du taux de déperdition scolaire dans cette couche de la population». They pour salt and palm oil on the ground at specific spots from the moment they enter the site. Then, they move downstream and get inside the waters in order to offer their sacrifices. The rituals, which are unique, allow the Bamileke people to connect with ancestors, ask for purification and seek their protection and intercession. A man who appeared to be a site keeper, escorted us upstream where several men and women were candidly having “ritual baths”. These baths are supposed to free the individuals from any spiritual impurities or bad luck. The man explained that at this

The Contest that brings fun to Limbe No more excuse for not taking that vacation and drive to Limbe. With its pristine chocolate colored beaches, fresh fishes, numerous attractions such the botanic garden, the wildlife reserve, the mount Cameroon volcano aches, and ruins of the ancient slave port among others, Limbe has always been a prime vacation spot for those looking either for the perfect gateway or just a fun filled vacation spot. But many have been concern with the lack of other entertainment activities. Seme Beach Hotel’s management has, however stepped up their game by transforming their modest facilities into more than just a hotel on a beach. With an assortment of activities that are organized year long, Seme Beach Hotel has positioned itself as the place to be when you want to spend a weekend full of fun in Cameroon. One of those events is the beach party that the hotel has gotten its guests used to. It is during one of these parties that the hotel’s Director (Mr. Yann Anoko) and a couple of his collaborators thought of little gimmick that would spice things up a little bit. They thought that they could organize a contest among the female guests attending the beach party, and crown the one with the best combination of look, intelligence, attitude and demeanor as “Miss Beach”. Five years and five editions later, the competition is on the verge on becoming a national event. The 5th edition of the Miss Beach Competition took the organizers to more than 6 cities nationwide in order to select the 20 contestants that finally made it to Limbe for the finals (on May 12, 2013). The event that drew a large crowd of people from every walk of life consisted of performances of not only the contestants but confirmed headlined by the program’s official face, Queen Eteme, a nationally acclaimed Bikutsi artist amongs other. At the end of the day, a new miss was crowned, and her responsibilities include promoting Cameroon tourism by bringing to spotlight the most exciting tourist attractions that Cameroon has to offer. Next year’s contest is already shaping up to be even bigger and more entertainment. You should already make plans to be among the crowd that will witness to rise of a new Miss Beach!

Quand de belles sirènes rendent les plages irrésistibles
Plus d’excuses pour tous ceux qui en ont toujours trouvé pour ne pas aller à la plage ! Avec une charmante reine, ou plutôt, une sirène des plages comme vous en lisez souvent dans les contes de fées, il n’y a plus de raisons de ne pas y aller. Elle vous-y attend, votre sirène. La reine des plages qui vient d’être intronisée à la faveur du concours « Miss Beach » qui s’est déroulé tout récemment à Limbe est toute souriante. Avec ses plages immaculées couleur chocolat, ses poissons fraîchement pêchés et grillés à la braise, de nombreuses attractions touristiques telles que le jardin botanique, la réserve de la faune et de la flore, les laves volcaniques du Mont Cameroun, et les ruines de l’ancien port esclavagiste de Bimbia (porte du non-retour) entre autres, Limbe a toujours été un lieu de vacance privilégié par ceux qui cherchent soit le CTM

dépaysement idéal, ou tout simplement un lieu de vacances fun. L’absence de divertissements autres que ceux cité plus ont souvent été cité comme prétexte par certains pour ne pas y aller. La direction de l‘Hôtel Seme Beach a répondu à cela en transformant leurs modestes installations pour en faire plus qu’un simple hôtel sur une plage. Avec un ensemble d’activités qui y sont organisées le long de l’année, Seme Beach Hôtel se positionne donc comme l’endroit idéal pour ceux qui veulent passer un week-end fun sur la plage au Cameroun. La Beach Party, l’un des événements qui y sont régulièrement organisés, a donné naissance au concours «Miss Beach». C’est lors d’une de ces fêtes que le directeur de l’Hôtel (M. Yann Anoko) et certains de ses collaborateurs ont eu l’idée de choisir parmi les participantes, la fille qui se distinguerait par son

•• caractère, son intelligence, son comportement en plus de son look. A l’issue d’un petit concours, Ils récompenseraient la gagnante en lui décernant la couronne de «Miss Beach». Cinq ans et cinq éditions plus tard, la compétition est devenue un événement d’envergure nationale.
L’événement était grandiose. De gauche à droite et de haut en bas: Les trois lauréates , La nouvelle Miss Beach sur la plage, Queen Eteme en compagnie de la Miss sortante s’apprêtant à remettre les trophées; Les candidates au marché des objets d’art, les candidates dans leurs différentes tenues, la visites des sites touristiques et la caravane dans les rues de Limbé.
La 5ème édition du concours Miss Beach aurait emmené les organisateurs dans plus de 6 villes du pays afin de sélectionner les 20 candidats qui ont finalement rejoint Limbe pour la finale (le 12 mai 2013). Pendant deux jours, les belles sirènes ont envahi Limbé, rendant du même coup les plages irrésistibles. L’événement a attiré une grande foule composée d’hommes et de femmes venant de tous horizons. Des performances non seulement des concurrentes, mais aussi de la marraine de la compétition (Queen Eteme) en tête d’affiche, et de l’une des anciennes gagnantes (devenue artiste) ont régalé les invités pendant les deux jours des festivités. Au final, une nouvelle Miss a été couronné. Ses responsabilités sont entre autres la promotion du tourisme Camerounais. L’événement de l’année prochaine est déjà en cours de préparation et s’annonce déjà grandiose. Planifiez dès aujourd’hui pour ne pas rater le couronnement de Miss Beach 2014!

Yann Anoko a entrepris d'organiser annuellement un concours de beauté féminine pour dénicher la mascotte des plages. Le concept de Miss Beach entend promouvoir le tourisme tout en mettant en valeur la beauté de la femme africaine. Ce concours, qui fait courir beaucoup de monde et met en ébullition toute la ville de Limbe une fois l'an, a pour ambition de rendra votre séjour sur les côtes atlantiques du Cameroun encore plus agréable. CTM : Qui se cache derrière le visage angélique de Miss Beach? Valérie : Kesse Ayem Valérie Michelle est une jeune camerounaise originaire du sud-Cameroun (de la tribu Bulu) Je suis âgée de 19 printemps, étudiante en logistique et transport dans un institut supérieur de la place au Cameroun, troisième d’une famille de 4 enfants; Jeune fille dynamique, intelligente, joviale, sociale, pleine d’humilité, et surtout déterminée dans la vie. CTM : Cela a certainement nécessité une certaine dose de courage de ta part pour que tu te présentes à ce concours. Que représente la compétition Miss Beach pour toi ? Valérie : Oui… certainement il m’a fallu beaucoup de courage pour me représenter à cette compétition pour laquelle j’avais déjà eu à participer l’année dernière. Malheureusement, je n’avais pu arriver qu’au pied du podium, occupant la 4ème place. C’est la raison pour laquelle j’ai souhaité retenter l’expérience, puisque l’élection de miss Beach pour moi représente ce concours qui valorise la beauté de la jeune fille camerounaise et surtout estudiantine, promeut le tourisme camerounais dans un certain sens, mais célèbre aussi la nature à travers les personnes que nous sommes et l’environnement. CTM : Comment as-tu vécue la compétition, les différentes étapes… et l’annonce du résultat final ? Valérie : Déjà la préparation pour la compétition a été très longue et difficile, non seulement physiquement, mais aussi moralement. Il me fallait une condition physique impeccable, travailler ma culture générale, ma tenue et mon défilé. Coté élection, ma sélection lors des castings régionaux ne s’est pas faite aisément étant donné que j’étais la dernière des 5 filles sélectionnées pour la grande finale dans ma région. Pendant celle-ci, les 19 autres candidates et moi CTM

Miss Beach 2013, l ’a poth éose! nous sommes familiarisées de telle sorte que l’on aurait cru que nous étions en colonie de vacances, au vu de l’ambiance bonne enfant qui y régnait. Ensemble, on a eu à faire les différents ateliers (sport, caravane, défilés de mode, photo-shoots etc.). Le jour de la grande finale, c’est vrai, il y avait cette tension dans l’air, puisque c’est une compétition avant tout. Même si nous étions là pour nous amuser, chacune de nous souhaitait gagner. Alors, entre stress et anxiété, je ne savais plus où donner la tête. Mais, dès que le concours a débuté, je me suis sentie plus dégagée. Et à l’annonce du résultat, j’étais prise de panique jusqu’à ce que l’on prononce mon nom. Et là, j’ai fondu en larme (bien sure de joie). CTM : ET les autres participantes… tes concurrentes pour cette édition… Valérie : Toutes les candidates étaient belles, chacune avec ses atouts et son charme. Mais, hélas… il fallait une gagnante et c’est moi qu’on a choisi. CTM : La plage (beach), cela représente quoi pour toi ? Valérie : Alors, la plage et l’eau pour moi, elles CTM

représentent la pureté, la vie, l’espoir au loin, un espace de convivialité (plage), d’amour et l’une des meilleures choses que DIEU ait eu à créer après l’Homme. CTM : Le Cameroun est certainement un très beau pays mal connu à l’étranger, quel rôle Miss Beach compte-t-elle jouer pour la promotion du tourisme Camerounais? Valérie : Alors en tant qu’ambassadrice, je vais promouvoir le tourisme camerounais aussi bien sur le plan national qu’international, car le Cameroun est une Afrique en miniature à elle toute seule. Il regorge une multitude de richesses que j’ai hâte à faire découvrir et à en parler. Je sensibiliserai également la population pour une meilleure conservation de ces sites touristiques car il en va de la survie du tourisme camerounais. CTM : Quels sont tes destinations touristiques Camerounaises préférées ? Quelles destinations conseillerais-tu aux touristes et voyageurs qui arrivent au Cameroun ?
Valérie : Bien sûr l’hôtel Seme Beach, sa magnifique plage et piscine naturelle, le zoo et le jardin botanique de Limbe, les chutes de la lobé à Kribi, le sublime parc de Waza au nord, les hauts plateaux de l’ouest et leurs chefferies traditionnels, les plaines du sud, la forêt de l’Est-Cameroun et sa population indigène. En ce qui concerne les destinations touristiques, je conseillerai sans doute celles que j’ai eues à énumérer plus haut, en commençant par l’hôtel Seme Beach de limbe bien évidement. CTM : Maintenant, parlons gastronomie : quels sont tes plats (Camerounais) préférés. Si tu devais recevoir des visiteurs illustres (comme nous… rire), que nous proposerais-tu comme menu qui nous ferait revenir plusieurs fois après pour te rendre visite (miam, miam…) ? Valérie : Pour les mets, je les recevrai avec du bon Ndolè au poisson fumé et crevettes, accompagnée du plantain mur et des miondos. Mais également du Touba (plantain pillé) avec du nfianhondo (sauce d’arachide grillé) à la viande de brousse. CTM : Peut-on lire dans le future de Miss Beach? Peux–tu partager tes rêves avec nous ? Valérie : Pour mon futur, je compte déjà poursuivre mes études. J’aspire ouvrir ma propre société de transit, mais aussi qui sait… par la grâce de DIEU ravir la couronne de miss Cameroun un jour. CTM : Un dernier mot pour les lecteurs de CTM ? Valérie : Déjà continuer à rester fidèle à CTM, croire en soi, être persévérant dans tout ce qu’on fait car un jour on obtiendra ce dont on désire par la grâce de DIEU.

Nous avons tous nos artistes préférés, nos stars dont les titres phares, nous fredonnons à longueur de journée. Pour beaucoup de ces morceaux, nous apprenons à les aimer en écoutant la radio, en regardant la télé, ou en fréquentant les boites de nuits. Dans ces derniers lieux, tout comme dans nos fêtes de famille ou entre amis, une personne, souvent oubliée, est responsable de notre plaisir au même titre que la bière ou le couvert au cas
échéant. Cette personne, c’est bien le Disc-Jockey (DJ). Au Cameroun, Le DJ le plus en vue, le plus décoré et le plus créatif c’est bien sûr Pat Cool, le dépositaire de l’ambiance musicale à la Sanza Night-Club de Yaoundé. CTM est allé à la découverte de Pat Cool, le Lion Indomptable des platines. Night Scenes CTM : Qui est DJ Pat Cool? DJ Pat Cool : Pat Cool c’est quelqu’un de très simple, sans complexe qui reste à l’écoute de tout le monde, du plus petit au plus grand. Je crois qu’il est important d’écouter les gens. Pat Cool est un homme qui vit sa vie dans la simplicité et le respect. CTM : Quand as-tu eu ton premier contact avec la musique ? Et avant cela, Quel était le profil de Pat Cool avant son premier contact avec la musique ? La musique pour moi est une passion. Je porte une casquette artistique aujourd’hui parce que j’ai longtemps roulé ma bosse. J’écoute tout genre de musiques. C’est important parce que pour réussir dans la vie, Il faut beaucoup écouter. Le métier de DJ m’est venu tout naturellement. J’ai toujours voulu faire de la musique d’une manière ou d’une autre. Cela m’a fait interrompre l’école avant que je n’ai à me présenter au BEPC. A l’époque (années 2000) j’étais déjà amoureux de la musique et j’enviais les DJs quand j’étais plus jeune. Je les accompagnais faire le show, je les aidais à transporter les baffles. Quand il m’arrivait de participer, je rêvais toujours d’être parmi les meilleurs, même si je ne l’étais pas encore. Je sentais la musique couler dans mes veines. J’ai vite compris que pour être parmi les meilleurs

dans ce monde-là, il me fallait beaucoup bosser, et faire des sacrifices. Le premier sacrifice que j’ai fait était celui d’abandonner l’école. C’était difficile, parce que ma famille n’arrivait pas à comprendre mes choix. CTM : Un mot sur ta carrière. Comme est ce qu’elle a évoluée ? Quel était ton premier appareil de mixage en tant que DJ ? DJ Pat Cool : Des lecteurs cassettes. Ce n’était pas des appareils pros. A l’époque, tout était mécanique, analogique. On utilisait des cassettes de bandes magnétiques avec deux ou plusieurs lecteurs pour faire le travail. On pausait une chanson afin de lui coller une autre tout en respectant le beat, le timing. Là, il fallait avoir une oreille musicale. Aujourd’hui, c’est beaucoup plus facile. CTM : Dans l’opinion publique, un DJ c’est une personne extravagante, à la limite pittoresque. Mais nous avons là en face de nous un homme très réservé. Comment vis-tu cette vie en tant que DJ, non seulement dans les arènes, lieux de tes prestations, mais aussi en dehors? Déjà, le DJ c’est quelqu’un qui mérite plus de respect que l’on ne lui en donne au Cameroun. En ce qui concerne l’extravagance, cela ne fait pas parti de mon caractère. Il est vrai que le DJ

est une star, un artiste. Il reste tout de même un homme normal comme tous les autres. Je ne crois pas que c’est en étant extravagant que je serais plus performant. Je dirais tout simplement que le DJ est un homme comme tous les autres. CTM : Comment as-tu pu te construire cette réputation ? L’histoire que je retiens aujourd’hui c’est celui du premier prix que j’ai eu en 2004. Quand j’ai été élu meilleur DJ lors des RTS Awards, les gens ont commencé à véritablement découvrir ce garçon que l’on appelle DJ Pat Cool. Ensuite, J’ai été consacré meilleur DJ lors d’une compétition organisée par Michael Power de Guinness Cameroon en 2005. C’est depuis cette période-là que je suis devenu celui que l’on appelle aujourd’hui 7 fois champion au Cameroun. CTM : Comment es-tu partir du pur mixage à la création musicale ? C’est un client qui m’inspire à faire ce bond. Je m’amusais à prendre des beats que j’associais a certaines chansons connues, parce que je m’étais fixé l’objectif d’un jour sortir un album de remixes. J’avais donc associé un bit local à la chanson « Un Estate Italiana », la chanson officielle de la Coupe du Monde 90, ou les Lions
Night Scenes Actuellement au Cameroun, le Bikutsi fait fureur. On peut dire sans se tromper que le Bikutsi a pris le pouvoir au Cameroun (rire…). C’est bien de savoir que l’on peut avoir un rythme qui est au-dessus de tous les autres. Donc, le Bikutsi c’est l’actu au Cameroun. CTM : Vous avez frappé un grand coup en faisant venir le trio Noah à la Sanza… Peux-tu nous raconter cette expérience ? C’était une expérience vraiment grandiose. Il fallait être là pour le vivre au réel. La dynastie Noah était là. Par l’entremise du Président (Tchop-Tchop), nous avons eu le mot que Joakim venait en vacances au pays et voulait s’amuser avec son père, son grand-père et sa sœur. Nous avons voulu faire quelque chose de (Indomptables) avaient fait une belle prestation. CTM : Qu’est-ce que cela a finalement donné ? Je me suis enfermé chez mois pendant plusieurs jours à travailler sur ce morceau. Et quand il est revenu une semaine après, j’ai refusé de le lui donner. Il est reparti, très remonté contre moi, mais comme j’avais cet objectif de sortir un album de remixes, je me suis mis à peaufiner ce projet et à y ajouter d’autres titres. Après un moment, je suis allé voir Joly Priso, le grand arrangeur Camerounais, à qui j’ai présenté le projet. Au bout de cinq ans de dure labeur, le produit final l’album « Fuzion » est sorti en 2010. CTM : Quels sont les artistes qui t’inspirent en termes de créativité au Cameroun, en Afrique et dans le monde ? Richard Bona, Ben Decca, Dina Bell, Sam Mbende, Ekambi Brillant tout ceux de l’ancienne génération. Charlotte Dipanda, Kareyce Fotso, Ce sont là les véritables artistes musiciens. Des artistes dont j’ai toujours envie d’écouter les œuvres, et qui m’inspirent. Au niveau de l’Afrique, Koffi Olomidé, Meiwey. Au niveau monde et surtout des Etats-Unis, ils sont nombreux. Mais pour moi, c’est le Mboa, le pays d’abord. C’est pour cela que mon album se focalise beaucoup plus sur les morceaux du pays. CTM : Et dans le monde des DJs, quels sont tes modèles ? Qui t’inspire le plus en termes de mixage et de création ? Aujourd’hui je ne dirais pas que je suis le meilleur sur la place, parce que pour être meilleur il faut avoir battu le meilleur, sauf que je ne sais pas qui il est. Mais le DeeJaying au Cameroun connait beaucoup de problèmes. Depuis que je suis dans ce milieu, et j’ai eu à
voir des DJs travailler, la créativité n’y est pas. Je n’en connais que deux de créatif à Douala. Ils s’appellent DeeJay Boos-K et DJ Valère. A Yaoundé, ce n’est pas du tout cela. Moi aussi je sais apprécier, surtout quand quelqu’un prend un slow et le met dans un beat dansant. DeeJay Boos-K et DJ Valère sont de ceux qui peuvent créer, et j’apprécie. CTM : Quels beats cartonnent le plus dans les boites du Cameroun à l’heure actuelle ?

Nous avons donc organisé cela, et ils se sont bien amusés, il a fait son show à la cabine, sur la piste etc. C’était de la folie totale, il y avait du grand monde, au point ou la circulation dans la boite était impossible. CTM : Et si nous revenions à la musique. Quels tubes classiques considères-tu comme infaillibles, c’est-à-dire des tubes

Night Scenes qui cartonnes toujours malgré leur âge ? Ce sont les mêmes artistes que j’ai cité plus haut. Ben Decca, Dina Bell, Bébé Manga, Tom Yoms, Charlotte Bango, Eboa Lotin etc. Que de belles mélodies ! L’album que j’ai fait a juste puisé dans ces mélodies, et j’y ai même mis un sampling d’Eboa Lotin avec sa voix originale. Ce sont des mélodies inoubliables, et qui ne meurent pas. CTM : Tes relations avec les artistes. Comment sont-elles ? J’ai de très bonnes relations avec les artistes. Si on en vient à respecter les DJs aujourd’hui au Cameroun c’est un peu grâce à moi. J’essaie de faire ressortir la dimension cachée des musiques du pays. Je crois que les artistes apprécient. Quand ils sortent leurs albums, Je suis l’un de ceux qu’ils contactent en premier pour requérir leur avis. Ils sont contents de ce que je fais avec leurs morceaux. Je suis devenu une sorte de plaque tournante de la scène musicale et je suis en contact avec la grande majorité d’entre eux.

CTM : Il paraît que tu as album en ton nom... Oui. C’est l’album Fuzion que j’ai évoqué plus haut. CTM : Pourquoi Fuzion ? Parce que l’album est une fusion de toutes les inspirations que je suis allé chercher très loin dans les musiques existante. J’ai pris des slows que j’ai mis dans une autre cadence, et ils sont devenus des musiques dansantes. CTM : Cela doit être une première pour un DJ Camerounais… Exacte. Avant cela, il y a des remixes, mais pas d’album fait par un simple DJ Camerounais. Ce qui fait sa particularité, c’est le type de musiques, de rythmes choisis pour les remixages. J’ai pris des slows et des musiques d’écoute que j’ai transposé dans une autre cadence pour en faire des musiques dansantes. Cela ne s’était pas fait avant. Avant, il y a eu des slows remixé en slow et des Makossas remixés en Makossa. On se souvient bien des testaments du Makossa, La bible du Makossa, et bien d’autres… Je reçois constamment des félicitations aussi bien des Camerounais du terroir que de ceux de la diaspora pour cet album. CTM : As-tu un autre album en projet ? Oui, bien sûr. Le prochain album est en préparation, et est presque prêt, et Je vais l’appeler Fusion 2. CTM : Si tu devais classer les boites de nuit de Yaoundé et du Cameroun en général, quel serait ton top 5 ? La sanza en premier. Pas parce que j’y suis employé. Le design est Italien et c’est seule boite au Cameroun qui aie un vrai mix de régie lumière et régie son. La régie lumière de la sanza est impressionnante. Il faut y être pour apprécier. Je dirais que la sanza est au top au Cameroun, et parmi les cinq premières en Afrique. Pour le reste je mettrais le Safari en deuxième position, le Djeuga (Olympique) en troisième, le Katios en quatrième, le ViP Room en cinquième position. CTM : Revenons à ton enfance. Oû est né Pat Cool ? Pat Cool est né à Yaoundé. Je suis né au quartier

Mokolo-Madagascar, quartier de gangsters. CTM : Je suppose que Pat Cool n’est pas ton nom véritable. D’où tu viens le nom Pat Cool ? Mon nom de naissance c’est Ambana Armand Lucien. Mon petit nom d’enfance c’est Paty. A l’époque, j’ai travaillé dans une discothèque (Maison de disques) à la Monté Anne Rouge (Yaoundé), ou il y avait 3 personnes répondant au nom de « Pat ». Il y en avait un qui était court, et qui se faisait donc appeler « Pat Short », l’autre était connu comme Patrice tout simplement. Pour me distinguer des autres Il a fallu que je mette un petit truc à côté de mon

nom. Pat Cool est venu d’un ami et voisin du quartier Emana (Yaoundé). Il m’appelait tout le temps Pat Cool au quartier. Il est donc venu une fois à mon boulot à la Monté Anne Rouge, et m’a appelé Pat Cool. Cela m’a permis d’avoir ce petit truc qui me distinguait des autres, et c’est comme cela que le nom est resté collé à ma personne. Ce n’est donc pas venu de moi. CTM : Comment s’est passé ton enfance dans ce quartier? J’ai beaucoup souffert dans mon enfance. Je suis né dans un quartier de gangsters. Je voulais à l’époque faire quelque chose de positif de ma vie. Je me suis alors dit que même s’il
fallait que je me donne corps et âme pour réaliser ce rêve, j’allais le faire. Cela n’a pas été facile. Je ne suis pas devenu gangster et c’est déjà cela de positif. J’ai fait l’école primaire à Sacré-Cœur de Mokolo, et le secondaire au Collège Mongo Béti. C’est à ce niveau que mon contrat avec l’école s’est interrompu. J’ai dit à mes parents que je ne continuerais plus avec l’école. CTM : Et que pensent tes parents aujourd’hui de ce que tu es devenu ? La seule chose que je déplore aujourd’hui, c’est le décès de ma maman. Elle est partie en 2009, à un moment où je commence à réaliser mes objectifs. J’aurais voulue qu’elle soit là pour véritablement savourer mon succès et témoigner de mon progrès. C’est vrai qu’elle était déjà là en 2004 et 2005, mais entre 2009 et 2010, il y a eu beaucoup de progrès, beaucoup de succès, et j’aurais souhaité qu’elle fut la pour le vivre avec moi. Surtout en 2009, pendant que l’on me présente ce prix, elle est couchée à la maison dans un cercueil. C’était vraiment douloureux, et c’est le seul mauvais souvenir que j’ai en ce moment. S’agissant du reste de ma famille, je n’en reçois que des félicitations. Mes parents n’avaient jamais pensé que j’arriverais à ce niveau. Non seulement que je deviendrais un DJ respecté, mais que je me retrouverais avec cette double casquette de DJ et d’artiste en même temps. CTM : Quels sont tes ambitions, tes rêves pour l’avenir ? Pour l’album en préparation, j’ai décidé de le réaliser en Europe, parce que je voudrais mettre la barre encore plus haute. L’avenir pour moi c’est de devenir un très grand arrangeur. Je ne voudrais pas demeurer un simple DJ. Je voudrais devenir un DJ évènementiel, celui là qui crée des évènements qui s’organisent avec beaucoup de sérieux. Je travaille avec tout mon staff pour qu’après l’album qui est en préparation, je devienne plutôt Ce type de DJ là, un créateur, et un homme des concepts. Nous travaillons aussi sur la création d’un label la création d’une chaine TV pour la promotion exclusive de la culture locale. et facebook.com/RMX-association). CTM : C’est le maillot D’Achille (Emana) que tu as là… Oui... Il faut se rendre à l’évidence que le DJ côtoie tout le monde. Des cadres de l’administration publique aux sportifs passant par les magistrats et les membres du corps des armées. Je suis aussi l’ami des footballeurs. Que ce soit Achille (Emana), Nicolas Nkoulou, Carlos Kameni, Alexandre Song… bref, tous les membres de l’équipe nationale. Il se trouve qu’ils m’envoient souvent leurs nouveaux maillots pour les nouvelles saisons (comme Nicolas N’koulou et Achille viennent de le faire) pour que je les porte. C’est aussi une fierté de savoir qu’ils apprécient ce que je fais, que je leur donne du plaisir, et je crois que c’est leur manière à eux de le démontrer. CTM : On pourrait donc en déduire que tu es le lion indomptable des… Voilà, comme vous le dites, peut-être le lion indomptable des platines… CTM : Un dernier mot pour les lecteurs de CTM ? Back to the Roots
How they traced their roots back to Cameroon, Africa in miniature More and more of them are taking the leap of faith. For years, they have asked themselves the same question. Where do I really come from? They all knew they came from somewhere, just like many other Americans, who commonly identify with their foreign cultural heritage, unless they are Native Americans. The U.S. is known as the land of immigrants, which is why we often hear of Italian-Americans, Irish-Americans, French-Americans, Chinese-Americans etc. For a long time, African-Americans have only been able to identify with Africa, a vague name, land of mythical kingdoms, exotics names, Safaris and mostly the pyramids and Nelson Mandela’s South Africa. Yet, nobody took that leap of faith to push further. We all long to the day when Africa will be one country. As of now, Africa is not a country. It is a continent, and the second largest in the world for that matter, only second to Asia. Africa has 54 countries, with the second largest population in the world, only second to Asia, again! With so many countries, come many cultures, subcultures and traditions, and of course international boundaries. This is why many African-Americans are no longer satisfied to simply know that they are from Africa. They would like to know where exactly in Africa their ancestors came from.

Up to now, people have heard of celebrities that had traced their roots back to Africa, and many of them all the way to Cameroon. In our first issue, we reported on those celebrities that had traced their roots back to Cameroon. People such as Condoleeza Rice, Quincy Jones, Oprah Winfrey, Blair Underwood, Chris Rock, Spike Lee, to name a few, are known to have traced their roots back to Cameroon. In our last issue, we published an article from Prince William D. Holland, who shared his story with CTM readers, a story that prompted others to do the same. Many more African-Americans are researching and resorting to DNA testing in order to have a clue about their cultural heritage. In the following pages, enjoy the stories of few more that retraced their roots to Cameroon, the Lions’ den.

•• “It was like waking up on another planet and not knowing where you were or how you were going to get home and then finally you see a light, a spiritual light whose rays awaken you to a new world of mental spiritual enlightenment. African Ancestry was my catalyst for that light” Since I was about 18, I have always had a spiritual connection to African and African American history that I couldn’t put my finger on. I had been reading about African History by both African and White Historians for years and have realized that all that was taught to me was wrong. I was starting to empty my mind of all the negative images that were shown and said about people
After reading about the Tikar people, I decided to change my facebook page from being from Little Rock, Arkansas to being from Bamenda, Cameroon. I picked Bamenda because it was close (on a map) to the Northwest Region where the Tikar people were said to had migrated to. Then something else happened. After being connected with other Heritage traced descendants from Cameroon, I was invited to participate in a “Name Changing” ceremony on the 22nd of September 2012. The date is important because this is the day I was born and reborn. My information was submitted to the North West King’s (Fon’s) Council (here in the U.S). They send it back to Cameroon for the High Priests to consult with the ancestors about. Then the names are given. One must be present at the ceremony which contains blessing rituals, libation and crossing of the Atlantic back into the arms of the motherland. It’s a free ceremony itself and was formal and very well done. I had a great time and met many wonderful people. My NEW name is Meyaka meaning “Thank You” Meyaka was given to me from the TIKAR/NSONGWA Tribe of Cameroon. By the way, I later found out that the city of Bamenda consists of seven tribes, one of which is NSONGWA!
It felt as if a veil had been lifted or a page had turned in my life. It was unbelievable. who look like me. I would watch the African Channel and see a different Africa than what was generally displayed on television or read about in the newspaper. Longing to return to Africa mentally and spiritually, I decided I was going to pick an African country to visit and adopt for myself. So I browsed the different African countries highlighted by the African Channel and chose Cameroon. I mean as soon as I saw it, it felt like this was the place I needed to be. And after seeing African Ancestry on television helping people of African descent discover their ancestral roots I decided to trace my lineage. When the results arrived, I sat down and slowly opened the envelope that read “you share African lineage with the Tikar people of Cameroon”, well, it didn’t hit me until about 14 minutes later while driving down the street, it felt as if a veil had been lifted or a page had turned in my life. It was unbelievable. The fact that it was Cameroon, the place I had picked to adopt was startling.

Yvette “Mimshe” Toko My “hidden” heritage
Let me start by saying that my reconnection back to Cameroon came as a surprise. I have been connected to Africa since childhood after viewing the movie Roots by Alex Haley. It had been my mission to return to “Negroland” as I called it based on the fact that black people were called Negros at that time. I am an American by nationality, but have always known and self-identify with my heritage and feel most comfortable being acknowledged as an African descendant or African-American.
In 2006 I did a DNA test that would yield results of African ancestry. This was a wonderful confirmation of what I had always known in my soul, but to have it there on paper and in scientific terms, was indeed a prayer answered. The

Most of the places were significant areas for my husband and I because our union symbolizes a positive reconnection of the past from atrocities committed during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Our marriage is a symbol of love, hope, unity, possibilities, and a bright future. The places we visited were also significant, because I got to meet my in-laws and visit kingdoms which I only read about in books and were stories a few months prior. Now they had become real. But one place that is very special is Foumban. My ancestry revealed lineage from the Bamoun. I felt a connection immediately with the women while there, and found myself staring at one woman who was walking down the street. I wanted to run to her and call her sister because she looked very much like the people here in the U.S. I was really at peace in the villages and small towns. Yaounde and Douala were bustling with activity but I preferred the more tranquil vibe of the village.

When I return, I will be using the time to spend having an extended honeymoon with my husband, spend time with my in-laws, and visit the English speaking towns of Cameroon.
DNA test, showed three countries in West Africa which made me happy, but not completely satisfied. There was still an inner yearning. As time went on, in 2011, there was another test available for free, so of course I jumped at the opportunity. Well this test placed my ancestry among those that I previously mentioned but ALSO to Cameroon and Nigeria. I was ecstatic! By this time I had become part of several facebook heritage groups all focused on common heritage. The groups were started by a woman who also happens to have Bamileke and Bamoun ancestry. The groups are managed under her directorship, and several co-admins, which I happen to be one of them. I was even given the name “Mimshe” from the NW Fons council here in the states during athe 2012 Panafest naming ceremony. Mimshe means “patience”. This turned out to be the perfect name for my journey, because it took patience and steadfastness to arrive at the desired place I was seeking. One day I got a message from a gentleman just making a friendly greeting. That man is now my husband. His name is Constantin Toko. He is a gift that I treasure every day. I come from the second oldest group of people on the planet
For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to know who my ancestors were. When I was a little girl my grand-mother told me that we were Indians (Natives of North America), I asked her what kind of Indians? She said, “I don’t know, just Indians.” I cried when I saw the cowboys kill the Indians, in cowboys and Indians movies. I asked her, “Mother, why can’t we win one, just one time?” (I was probably around five or six).

When the teenage years came around, I heard James Brown sing, “Say it loud, I’m Black and I’m proud.” I read about slavery and knew that we were their descendants. Well, this revelation was not accepted by my grand-mother, “we are not Africans”, she insisted, “we are Indians”. I looked in the mirror and the mirror told me that “Africa” was in me! I wore Afros in the 60’s–70’s and any “African” clothing or accessories that I could find. I saw the movie “Roots” by Alex Haley and I looked in the mirror and knew that I was a West African, no matter what anyone said. No one in my family had any stories on Africa to share. They had been so conditioned by 246 years of being enslaved. My grand-mother’s name was Cora, which is an “African retention”. A Kora/Cora is a West African Instrument. She never knew that fact. I married a man from Issele-Uku, Nigeria. He is Igbo. After we had three sons together, our sons and I traveled to Nigeria with him. When I got off the plane, I felt something inside me say, “We made it!” (I wanted to kiss the ground, once I got off the plane). I, for once, did not feel like a “minority, 12 %”, like I did back home in the U.S.A. I blended in with the general population. When I was in the village, everyone thought that I was my husband’s sister. “She looks like your sister”, they said. Dominic was so upset that he told them: “I don’t care what she looks like, she is not my sister, she is my wife!” I knew then truly what a “Soul Sister” was all about! Everybody told me, “Welcome home.”

I have met Tikar people in Galveston, where I live. I was able to get a photo with them. We do look like “cousins”. We have similar type of head shapes, foreheads, high cheekbones etc. I want to spend a lot of my time back “home” in Cameroon, when I retire in five years. I would love to work with NGOs to help in the maternal/baby health care area, health and hygiene and orphanages.
I would like any Diasporan Brothers and Sisters to know that I now feel “complete”, ever since I discovered my heritage. Years later, I heard about DNA testing. I wrote to African Ancestry in 2004 and paid for my first DNA test. I found out that I was an L2 and came from the second oldest people on the planet. I found out my Maternal Genetic Ancestry was shared with the Tikar people in Cameroon. I have not been to Cameroon yet but I plan to go there within the next two years. I plan to start saving next year specifically for this trip, my grand-daughter, Asiya will come with me (she has asked me to go—several times). I have traveled to Nigeria and Ghana because I had in-laws in Nigeria and I heard that Ghana was easy to visit as a tourist volunteer. I loved the visits so much that I long to go back for more. I feel loved and a part of the “people. I have contacts in Cameroon that are Tikar because I am a member of two groups on Facebook (Tikar Forever and the Tikar, Bamoun & Bamileke of Cameroon). I am certain that we will have a wonderful

Reverbnation.com profile: Daddy Sun from the B.A.M Greetings to all my fellow Cameroonian’s in the Motherland, and the descendants of Cameroonians spread throughout the Diaspora, from your long lost brother Nanya Saa Mir Areef, hoping that this reaches you all in good health, and good spirits! I, first and foremost want to thank CTM for allowing me to submit this article and share my experiences with DNA testing, genealogical research and a little about myself and what has lead me to this point. I was born and raised among a people who have been socio-politically disenfranchised in the “New World” for over 4 centuries, and wondering how it all happened. As a youth, I often heard that African people never contributed anything to civilization; then later reading books written by Ivan Van Sertima, J.A. Rogers, and W.E.B. Dubois, challenged those falsities and that in turn made me want to find out where my essence really lay. I always admired the civilization of ancient Egypt, but I knew that was ancient history. My African ancestors came to the New World no more than 500 years ago. So that was one of the main reasons I decided to get genetic testing—to see where I fit into the scheme of things, so to speak.
People of African descent in America have a real fascination with the ancient empires of Africa... Many of the kingdoms we often read and fantasize about, some of our ancestors were actually from.
I initially tried doing genealogical research in the mid 1990’s, before the Human Genome Project was developed. At the time, I was trying to uncover my maternal great grand father’s ancestry, rumored to be Native American. After I moved to their “hometown” in South Carolina, it became apparent to me that he probably did. But since he was so dark (with obvious African traits), I wanted to confirm it, especially because it was my suspicion that he never really established any ties with his father, nor any of his father’s relatives (since his father died before he was born, according to census records). This experience has made me appreciate the fact that tracing one’s genealogy is particularly difficult for “African Americans” because of our experience with slavery in this land. As far as the DNA testing process goes, it is the easiest part of the whole process. All it takes is the swabbing of one’s cheek with a Q-tip to extract your DNA
from the cells, or some spittle into a tube, which is enough to find your roots. It is just that simple. No pain and a fortune to gain!
There are three different companies I tested with, which are: 23andme.com, Family Tree Dna, and African Ancestry. So far I have learned that I have African, East Asian/Native American, and western European ancestry. Besides, there are other interesting things I’ve learned about my ancestry. This includes my maternal haplogroup information, which links me to an ancient relative (great grand mother) who originated 45,000 years ago in Central Africa or Sudan. I also found out that I share maternal ancestry with the Tikar people of Cameroon via African Ancestry, which is more recent. I have not yet traveled to Cameroon, but I definitely plan to in the future; God willing. Actually I have had my results for less than two months (the interview was conducted in May 2013). African Ancestry made their determinations on April 1st, 2013, so I got the results a couple of days after that. A few others have tested with African Ancestry and found their ancestries in Cameroon, and made the pilgrimage so

Back to the Roots
I’ve been learning a little about the cultures of the country by watching the videos they made via Youtube while they were there. I have also been doing my own independent research. I’m also planning on attending one of the naming ceremonies in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the African Culture and Religious Organization (ACRO) which assist people like me with the reconnection process. Having a name from one’s own ethnic group is very important to me and others here. I encourage people, mainly the youth here in the U.S. to go and find their roots. I think this type of information is crucial, and should be introduced in gang prevention programs, and other programs aimed at trying to prevent our youth from getting in to criminal activity. I say this because our people here are, in a sense, still segregated from broader society and really need to belong to something for the most part. I also believe that if we knew this type of information, we could tap into our inner- selves, and change our whole situation for the better.

Barack Obama I want to also say that people of African descent in America have a real fascination with the ancient empires of Africa, although those are days that are now gone. I think this is mainly because many of the kingdoms we often read and fantasize about, some of our ancestors were actually from. It wasn’t really that long ago, so there is still a strong attraction and connection to Africa, although many of us still don’t know our roots. I would also like to mention that what the Sultans, particularly Ibrahim Mbombo Njoya of Foumban have done to reinvigorate the “Shumom” script and language with the Bamum Scripts and Archives Project is really important, and I think that other countries within the continent of Africa should be doing the same, if they are not doing so already. We must preserve our customs and traditions, but at the same time make room for modernization. I don’t think modernization should mean losing one’s culture. One thing our ancestors did here in the “New world” was to adapt under the most terrible conditions, and at the same time, managed to hold on to the little that they managed to keep from our culture. This can be seen clearly in the Caribbean, and states such as South Carolina (Gullah culture), and Louisiana. Lastly, knowing this type of information is good for self esteem, particularly when for generations your ancestors (or just African people in general) were taught that Africa was primitive and never contributed anything of significance to civilization. But now due to genetic technology, when they say things like that, I can rebut that with a question, and ask,“well have you ever heard about a King or Fon from a kingdom called Bamun in Cameroon named Ibrahim Njoya?”
Hard to believe, but according to Times magazine, one of President Barack Obama ancestors from the maternal side may have come from Cameroon as a slave. Even though his name came from his Kenyan father, Obama is actually a more common last name in Cameroon than it is in Kenya.

désormais l’actualité avec des expéditions de nombreux caméricains (américains aux origines camerounaises, cf 1er numéro CTM) qui ont décidé de faire le chemin de retour à leurs racines, et ont pour l’occasion visité les sites pittoresques et mémorables qui rappellent l’histoire de la traite négrière. Pour beaucoup qui se reconnaîtront ou qui reviendront bientôt, le Cameroun est en somme une véritable terre d’accueil, ou si on veut la terre promise du continent africain. Au-delà de son potentiel matériel, ce pays est stable politiquement et son environnement des affaires s’est consolidé depuis l’atteinte de point d’achèvement de l’initiative Pays Pauvre Très Endetté (PPTE) en mai 2006. C’est donc un cadre propice au développement des affaires et à l’investissement direct. Aujourd’hui, le DSCE (document de stratégie pour la croissance et l’emploi) fait du tourisme un des pilier du développement à l’horizon 2035. Le tourisme est donc une priorité avec un accent qui est mis sur les produits phares dans chacune des dix (10) régions, la construction et l’aménagement des sites touristiques, et l’augmentation de la capacité d’accueil des touristes. Autrement dit, avec la mise en place des offices de tourisme, toutes les mesures qui précèdent seront opérationnelles en temps très opportun. C’est donc un nouvel éventail de produits touristiques aguichants qui attend les prochaines vagues de touristes ayant pour destination le Cameroun. La nouveauté est que le tourisme va désormais se faire partout, jusque dans le Cameroun profond et à petits prix, avec une préférence pour toutes formes de tourisme Cameroon Traveler Magazine • August 2013

Voyages qui intègre confort du touriste, qualité du service/produit et préservation de l’équilibre environnemental dans la durée. Et c’est d’ailleurs l’une des raisons pour lesquelles, de plus en plus, certaines initiatives privées locales s’inscrivent dans le registre de la promotion du tourisme durable au Cameroun. Pour un tourisme durable au Cameroun ? Le réseau d’affaires GO AFRICA Business, qu’accompagnent déjà les pouvoirs publics et des institutions internationales compétentes, a entamé depuis novembre 2011, une série d’événements, au Cameroun et en Allemagne, qui vise le retour à une économie camerounaise plus compétitive à travers le développement des filières de croissance dont fait partie le tourisme. Après la foire africaine de Hambourg du 25 au 25 mai 2012 en Allemagne, l’une des manifestations majeures de cette initiative au Cameroun a été la tenue, les 15, 16 et 17 mars 2013 à Kribi, du Salon International du Tourisme « Vert » baptisé Afrika‐Messe‐Kribi dont le thème général des travaux était : « Défis et Enjeux de l’industrie Verte dans les Pays du Sud, le cas du Cameroun ». Il s’agissait à partir de cette rencontre, de lancer un pont entre le développement industriel, l’amélioration de l’activité touristique et l’épanouissement à travers l’intégration des populations locales riveraines. Ainsi, le challenge a été: ■■ la réunion des acteurs de la filière tourisme au Cameroun autour des thématiques pertinentes qui traitent de la problématique du tourisme durable dans les pays du Sud ; ■■ l’interpellation de administrations impliquées dans la gestion touristique afin qu’elles prennent conscience de l’enjeu du développement du tourisme durable ; ■■ de montrer à la communauté internationale que plus que jamais, le Cameroun entend mettre sur pied, des mécanismes de sécurité des biens et des personnes, pour que s’épanouisse le tourisme ; ■■ l’interpellation des populations sur l’intérêt de la pratique du tourisme durable dans un environnement aussi complexe et vulnérable que la côte ; ■■ la création d’un cadre d’incitation en vue de l’implication des populations locales CTM

dans la promotion de nouvelles formes de tourisme, la vente et la commercialisation de produits aguichants. Plusieurs limites relevées à l’issue de cet événement pilote nous ont permis de mieux penser la prochaine édition qui se tient du 14 au 16 mars 2014, toujours dans la ville de Kribi, sous le thème : tourisme durable et réduction de la pauvreté. Soulignons que cette édition pilote a surtout permis de présenter autrement la destination Cameroun, d’introduire le concept de tourisme durable, et de montrer l’intérêt de toutes les parties directement ou indirectement concernées, à se mettre ensemble pour provoquer, de l’intérieur, un développement qui s’appuie sur l’exercice de la plus belle aventure humaine : découvrir l’Autre et l’Ailleurs, célébrer la Différence et le métissage, partager les expériences, échanger juste pour le plaisir.

•• Les voyageurs ont pendant longtemps décrié les conditions plus ou moins misérables qu’ils subissent dans les aéroports du Cameroun. S’il est vrai que l’aéroport international de Nsimalen (NSI) est dans un état acceptable, les autres ne l’ont toujours pas été. Si on prenait l’exemple de l’aéroport international de Douala (DLA), la chaleur, dans le hall de départ, le chaos dans la salle des bagages, les longs couloirs (Jetés A et B) vers les salles d’embarquement non équipés de tapis roulant, rendent le séjour des voyageurs difficile. Les duty-free shops qui y sont installés ne sauraient être comparées même aux boutiques les moins huppées du centre commercial de ville. Ces derniers jours, les fréquents voyageurs qui passent par l’aéroport international de Douala ont dû remarquer quelques légères améliorations sur le plan des infrastructures. Les salles d’enregistrement et d’embarquement ont été réfectionnées et le traitement des bagages s’est amélioré. D’autres réfections moins visibles au voyageur y ont également été réalisées. Dans le même ordre, l’aéroport international de Garoua a fait l’objet de travaux de rénovation, tandis que celui de Maroua-Salack est en cours de transformation pour devenir un aéroport international, avec Turkish Airline se positionnant pour en être le premier opérateur international. Lorsque l’on se rappellait que l’aéroport de Bamenda avait été rénové à l’occasion du cinquantenaire de l’indépendance du Cameroun, et que celui de Ngaoundéré connaît en ce moment des travaux de mise à niveau, l’onserait tenté de croire que le gouvernement s’est finalement résolu à mettre à la disposition des voyageurs camerounais et des compagnies aériennes un ensemble d’infrastructures adéquates qui rendront les voyages plus agréables. Avec quatre aéroports internationaux dans un futur très proche et quatre autres régionaux, les compagnies désireuses d’établir des vols domestiques ne devraient pas souffrir de problèmes infrastructurels. Ceci, à priori, est de bonne augure pour le tourisme camerounais. Malheureusement, ces vols domestiques sont presque inexistants à l’heure actuelle, ce qui rend la liaison entre le sud et le nord du pays difficile. Cameroon Traveler Magazine • August 2013

ravelers have long decried the more or less miserable conditions they undergo at airports in Cameroon. While Nsimalen International Airport (NSI) is in acceptable state, others have not been up to the users standards of acceptability. As an example, at the Douala International Airport (DLA), the heat in the departure hall, the chaos in the baggage claim area, long corridors leading to the rooms (Terminals A & B) not equipped with treadmill, make the stay of travelers less than enjoyable. The available dutyfree are less attractive than the boutiques of the city’s commercial center. There is some signs of hope in the air, however. In recent days, frequent travelers who pass through the Douala International Airport have noticed slight improvements in infrastructure. The check-in area and boarding rooms were just remodeled and luggage handling has improved. There is less chaos the departure terminal entrance. Other repairs less visible to travelers have also been carried out. Similarly, the Garoua International Airport has
been renovated. So is the Maroua-Salack airport, which is in the process of being transformed into an international airport with Turkish Airline set to become the first international operator to use the facility. When we recall that the Bamenda airport was renovated for the 50 anniversary of the independence celebrations and Ngaoundéré has just undergone upgrade work, we can say that the government has finally decided to make a set of adequate infrastructure available to passengers and airlines, which will make travel experience for Cameroonians enjoyable in the future. With four international airports set to be available in the very near future and four other airports in the regions, companies wishing to provide domestic flights should not suffer from lack of infrastructure. This, in principle, bodes well for the Cameroon’s tourism. Unfortunately, these domestic flights are almost non-existent at the moment, which makes the connection between the south and north of the country difficult.
Passport Renewal
How to do it when you live abroad or many Cameroonians living abroad, passport renewal can turn from a simple hassle to a nightmare. Many do not know where to begin with the renewal process for this vital document. Some even forget that the document should be valid for at least 6 months at all time, while they are abroad. Living abroad with an expired passport is also an infraction of the home country’s laws. There have been stories of individuals getting in trouble because of this. If your passport is expiring within 6 months, you should begin the process of having it replaced now. But where should you begin? Here is what you need to do: ■■ Go to the Cameroonian embassy closest to your place of residence and pick the passport renewal application. You can also download the application forms from the embassy’s website whenever possible. ■■ Fill out the forms. ■■ Bring the application forms along with supporting documents to the embassy and four (4) 5x5 CTM

passport size photos (on a white background). The list of required documents is available at the embassy or on their website. ■■ Bring along the application fees (including document copies legalization fees). The fee schedule is usually available on the embassy’s website. ■■ The consular officer will fill out the passport fabrication order (a card stock form) at the embassy at take your finger prints (on their special finger print cards). ■■ Pay the fees and get a receipt. ■■ Wait 3-4 months, and an e-mail will be sent to you, when your new passport is available. The e-mail will instruct you on how to collect your new passport. CTM arm yourself with a lot of patience and be courteous to the consular officer that will be helping you. You will be glad you did.

Waza is the most famous park in Cameroon and one of the most spectacular in Frenchspeaking Africa. Located in the Far North Region, 120km from Maroua, it is a heaven for the big cats and other animal species as well as for many varieties of birds. This park is an absolute “must” to discover.

The Bénoué National Park A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that contains a large number of hippos, Lord Derby Eland (antelopes), hyenas, panthers, etc. Situated in the Center of the North Region, 170km from Garoua, it is the favorite place for the largest antelopes such as the Lord Derby Eland.
The Mozoko Gokoro National Park This park contains a wealth of plant and animal species. It is situated in the Mayo Tsanaga Division, in the Far North Region.
The Campo-Ma’an National Park Located in the south of the country, this national park boasts a rich variety of animal species, being inhabited by elephants and chimpanzees which take advantage of the luxuriant forest. Apart from +National Parks, Cameroon offers many reserves devoted to flora and fauna. Pangar-Djerem, Dja, Kribi, Mbi Crater, Douala, Edéa, Kalfou, Lac Ossa, Santchou, Bafia Mount Cameroon… just to name a few.

Korup is said to have survived the ice age and is now a true ecological treasure. Consisting of mostly undisturbed primary forest. Korup is the most accessible rainforest national park in Cameroon with basic lodging infrastructure and a large network of trails open to visitors. The park is a popular bird watching destination and famous for primate viewing.
The Lobéké National Park A forest and animal reserve, as well as being a gorilla sanctuary, in the south-east of the country.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a sanctuary for gorillas and chimpanzees and various other animal and plant species may be observed here.

POPULATION Le Cameroun compte 240 ethnies, réparties en trois grands groupes (Bantous, Semi-Bantous, Soudanais) et correspond à 240 langues nationales. Les ethnies les plus représentatives sont : Bantous : Béti, Bassa, Bakundu, Maka, Douala, Pygmées … Semi-Bantous : Bamiléké, Gbaya, Bamoun, Tikar,… Soufdanais : Foulbé, Mafa, Toupouri, Arabes-Choas, Moundang, Massa, Mousgoum,… LANGUES Le français et l’anglais sont les langues officielles, elles sont parlées respectivement par 70 % et 30 % de la population. Visa Application A tourist visa is required to enter Cameroon. It is issued by its diplomatic or consular representation abroad. It is valid for 30 days non-renewable, with multiple entries and exits. It is possible to obtain a visa if you live in a country where Cameroon has no diplomatic representation and for chartered flights. The following documents are required: • A valid passport; • A round trip flight ticket; • An International Certificate of Vaccination (against yellow fever); • Two passport size photographs taken from the front with a with background; • A certificate of accommodation or hotel booking; • An application form for a visa to be collected at the consulate or obtained through postal services to be filled in and signed. Customs Clearance and Airport Stamp Customs As far as tourists are concerned, no taxes are required on the importation of the following objects: jewelry of less than 500 grams, personal clothes, cats and dogs which have passed through the health service, handsets, two photo cameras with ten rolls of films per camera, a small size video camera with ten rolls, a small size TV and radio set, a small size video recorder, a pair of binoculars, camping facilities sports equipment, toiletries, push chairs, three liters of wine, one liter of spirit, 500 grams of tobacco or 400 cigarettes or 125 cigars. Concerning arms and ammunition for game hunting, an importation license is required. For the exportation of animal products, obtain an authorization from the administration in charge of the environment. For the exportation of handicrafts derived from other sources (wood, iron etc.), refer to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mines and Handicraft. Airport Stamps The airport stamps on leaving Cameroon are CFAF 10,000 that is €US$ 20 for international flights, CFAF 500 that is US $ 1.00 for internal flights. Snapshots Photographs can be taken throughout the territory except for the presidential palaces, aerodromes, military zones and installations, defense and security staff and things that can ruin the reputation and the image of the country. To take pictures for commercial purposes and during official ceremonies, it is advisable to obtain a special pass from the Ministry of Communication. Taking photographs in national parks is allowed upon payment of a fix rate per camera. It is recommended to seek peoples consent when it comes to reproducing their images or taking their snapshots. Electric voltage Cameroon is electrified at 220 volts and its electrical sockets are of European standards. However, it is advised to buy a rechargeable lamp to use in case of power outage. They are widely available locally. Dressing Bring along linen or cotton clothes, sunglasses, a hat, woolen clothes for the evening and a raincoat if possible.

The MANKON FESTIVAL The Mankon Fon Palace has amassed fame through the hosting of grandiose cultural events as well as a fascinating traditional performances and festivals like the famous Abeug-afo now transformed to the all embracing biennial Mankon Grand Cultural Festival (MBOUMALA).
