“If I speak of his joie de vivre, of his spontaneity, of his natural way of relating to the world, of his candor, I will have said everything and nothing. I will have spoken about the man rather than about his painting. But isn’t Gérard Economos painting personified as man? Or perhaps he’s man expressed through painting!”

Gérard Economos, Paris. 1971.
From the day Jean Cocteau showed me the first works of Gérard Economos, his art has not ceased to improve, develop and assert its identity. Today we have the opportunity to discover the hidden side of his talent, the one that best reflects his discipline and way of thinking. Gérard Economos’ painting made up of mystery, silence and boldness, enthralls us by offering a glimpse of perfection.

40_GÉRARD ECONOMOS
In 1978 he designed a series of 13 allegorical illustrations for Charles Jourdan’s perfume “L’insolent.” The 1986 and 1987 seasons of the Lyon Opera were advertised using posters designed by my father. In 1990 he illustrated the poster for the music festival “Les moments musicaux de L’Hermitage” in the coastal town of La Baule, in the west of France. Among the artistic interventions he participated in was one commissioned by Henri de Lynclays, one of his closest friends and owner of the Boursault car dealership in Paris. It involved designing the interior and exterior colors of a Range Rover vehicle which appeared at the Paris Motor Show, where its blue tones and denim seats made it a smashing success. It is fair to say that my father was a pioneer in the field of artistic interventions, as evidenced by the Renault 5 Mirage he painted in 1983, which helped to make the car’s launch in Mexico City more spectacular. He also contributed a piece which flew on board one of Air France’s 747 airliners for many years and over countless thousands of kilometers. In 2014 my father fell seriously ill. Shortly after receiving the enormous distinction of being asked by his home country to choose one of his own paintings to appear on a French postage stamp, he was diagnosed with kidney failure and hospitalized in Paris for several weeks. In His Own Voice
TOLENTINO: ¿Usted es arquitecto de formación?
Question (Q): Are you an architect by training?
G.E: Sí, efectivamente, soy arquitecto y pintor.
Gérard Economos (G.E.): Yes, I am both an architect and a painter.
Q: It seems that you started with figurativism, designing posters for Air France. What made you decide to break away from figurative art?
G.E.: It wasn’t really a break, more like an evolution. Although my painting is considered to be abstract, it is not completely so. Some figurative elements are still there, and my work has classical foundations. Those who take the opposite approach are not artists, because you can’t get anywhere without having had teachers. That’s what I think of painting in a nutshell. Everything we see today in Europe, those installations. What’s that about? Philosophy? Art is about working on pieces, or in other words about being a worker.
Q: When you started collaborating with Air France, as a young man in your 30s, Mathieu was already there. G.E.: Very good question. Yes, he was there. I followed him. In 1969, when I first arrived at the company, I was told, “Here is an illustrious colleague of yours.” They let me go to New York, then to Montreal. That’s how I got started. But Mathieu was already there: my thinking teacher, my painting teacher.
Q: As an architect, were you ever tempted by geometric or line-based painting?
G.E.: No, not in the least. And I’ll tell you why. There was a great painter, Vasarely, who used that kind of language. I wouldn’t have followed in his footsteps.
Q: Lyrical expressionism had always interested you.
G.E.: Absolutely, lyrical abstraction. But it wasn’t easy for me to learn it. First of all, I’ve been very scholarly, very classical. Before later doing somewhat crazier things, I started with very classical foundations. This helped me learn. Proportions, the golden ratio. That’s so important, as pretentious as it may sound. My architecture studies, which went on for several years, taught me that nothing happens by chance, that everything is a logical sequence of reflections. As Voltaire said, before I die I have to learn to die. I still have a lot to learn, but it’s like that with all painters. Even the old-timers.
TOLENTINO: Algo se aprende todos los días.
Q: You learn something every day.
G.E.: That’s especially true with painters. Look at Mathieu, at Zao-Wou-Ki. It shows in their pieces. Nothing is created by chance.

Q: When you got your start in the 1960s, painting was immersed in the effervescence of the informal, and in gestural expression. Do you consider yourself to have been part of those trends?
Más bien he evolucionado.
G.E.: Absolutely. I wanted to be a painter. When I went with my mother to see Clouzot’s film Le Mystère Picasso (The Mystery of Picasso), I thought it was exceptional. I had already developed an attraction to gestural expression. Then there was my experience with Yves Klein. He was very young. And then there were Poliakoff, Zao-Wou-Ki, Soulages, Mathieu. Imagine that! Because of my age, I was attracted to this movement, and I think that continuity in a painter’s work is necessary. Now at the age of 70, I think I have been on a 50-year quest for something, which is not to say that I’ve found anything!
Q: But you keep searching, and you’re highly experimental.
G.E.: The day I run out of ideas is the day I stop painting.
Q: When did you start doing what could be called translating music into painting?
G.E.: In 1978, while in a big Parisian gallery, I’d grown tired of life’s mundanities and wanted to work with music too. Then I knocked on the door of Iannis Xenakis, who was Greek, being myself of Greek origin. I told him how I wanted to exhibit art with music. He accepted the idea, and it was he who coined the term “music to see with.” He most certainly uttered the sentence, “I hear the music of Gérard Economos’ paintings.” That’s how I launched the concept. It was extremely difficult at first. I kept doing exhibitions and book illustrations. It’s only been about 15 years since the concept really came to light, and after considerable effort.
Q: Your painting is one of gestures.
G.E: Sí, una pintura gestual.
G.E.: Yes, gestural painting.
Q: But not gestural in the purest sense, as in the case of Pollock, for example.
G.E.: Pollock is my teacher. I adore him, he’s sublime. If I had the means, I’d buy a Pollock canvas. For me, he was the guy who actually got what was in his brain onto the canvas. And if all of us are linked to someone, I’m linked to Pollock. He was in sync with what the ancient Greeks were able to do with the Parthenon. He was all about lines and colors.
Q: But didn’t Pollock have a negative view of life, a kind of despair?
G.E.: Art in general is a cry of despair. There’s nothing comical about it.
GÉRARD ECONOMOS_65
In His Own Voice
Q: Could one call your painting a form of crying out?
G.E.: Yes, yes. There’s nothing laughable about art. It’s exhibitionism. In other words, when you’re as fortunate as I am, you get to paint what’s inside and it becomes exteriorized. My wife will tell you that I’m not a very happy guy, that the only time I’m OK is when I paint. That’s why I’ve got so much admiration for Pollock. And he ended up committing suicide. There are such things as desperate gestures. Poetry’s also a desperate gesture. Or you copy things in order to please. As Jean Cocteau said, the public prefer the devil they know.
Q: This is particularly true in music, more than in visual forms of expression.
G.E.: Exactly, exactly. When it comes to anguish and creation, one always wonders what’s going to happen. You’ve got to find something different to hang onto.
Q: Do you forget about the audience when you paint?
G.E: Absolutamente.
G.E.: Absolutely, absolutely. I’m hardly aware of their presence. You get to that state after five or six minutes. When you come in and realize that a lot of people are there in front of you, it’s hard to undress yourself. Then you get going, happily. But, if you think people are laughing, that this little man is going to hit his head and fall into the paint pails, then it’s over. You stop painting. Not me. I put everything out of mind. Marcel Marceau told me that when you act, you must think about just one person (I think about a woman, not a man). You speak to that person. I imagine a competition, a fight, a conversation, and I voice it out loud!
Q: But can’t you start a conversation with the canvas?
G.E.: The canvas is ultimately a disc onto which one records. It’s an intermediary, a pretext.
Q: When I saw you, your hand gestures seemed to have a choreographic quality to them, like they were part of the performance.
G.E: Completamente.
G.E.: Completely. But I get reproached for that. My son pointed it out to me, and now I reproach myself for it. You do too much, because you want to take things a step further. And of course you shouldn’t make yourself look foolish. Learning self-control is so hard! Standing in front of a canvas 10 meters long and 2 meters high is nothing like working on one in a studio whose area is one square meter. The gestures are very different. The paint is flung about. You’re not making 50 cm brushstrokes, but rather gestures which might cover a couple of meters.

TOLENTINO: Hay caligrafía en su pintura.
Q: There’s a calligraphy in your painting.
G.E.: Yes, it’s calligraphy. I wouldn’t want to ignore the great Chinese masters of calligraphy. All abstract painters are in reality poor copies of Chinese calligraphers. You can take them one by one. There is obviously no need to mention Zao-Wou-Ki. His work is something approaching calligraphy, because Chinese culture is not something one can possess. You know, in music, there is a very beautiful gesture, which is the key of sol (Gérard lets out a kind of whistle), ssssssssssssss. And that was understood by Georges Mathieu, a magnificent painter whose talent has been somewhat overlooked. An exceptional individual who had André Malraux as a supporter and godfather. But as politicians’ artistic preferences changed, things got distorted. I don’t know whether a politics of art even exists today, but that’s another matter!
The conversation continued. We talked about Gérard Economos’ obligatory dealings with musical conductors, a kind of marriage or perhaps communion. In the absence of the latter, he did not paint! Painters must be knowledgeable of the musical performance, how each musical note and nuance will be played from beginning to end, and respond with simultaneous gestures. There is a sensorial exchange, a synesthesia involving the way the orchestra is conducted and the way the music is transferred to the painting. At this precise moment, someone came to get Gérard Economos and his wife Catherine for yet another important engagement, where he would undoubtedly tell his illustrious interlocutors, with extreme wisdom and affability, all about the wonderful adventure that is visible music.

Visible Music

One facet of my father’s work which attracted the gaze of many people in the art world was his creation of largeformat paintings to the accompaniment of music being played live before large audiences. The presence and energy of live audiences contributed to these unique moments when works of art were brought to life on canvas, with the spectators’ eyes and ears simultaneously trained on both the painter and the musicians. He painted some 20 pieces in several countries using this method. His “visible music,” as he liked to call it, was performed with international orchestras such as the Montreal Symphony, the Orchestre Lamoureux in Paris, the Lisbon Philharmonic Orchestra, the Shanghai Orchestra and the Beijing Opera Chorus. Héctor Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Dvorak’s The Creation of the World are among the musical pieces to which he painted. He also worked with jazz, mariachi and Cuban son ensembles. In 1979, the presentation of Laserísimo was the reason for a trip to what would become his adopted country. This audiovisual performance was organized in Mexico City by Phillips, Jean Patou and AICM (Mexico City International Airport) to welcome the landing of Air France’s supersonic Concorde in Mexico. In 1980, he gave a live performance in Karachi together with the Pakistani painter Ismail Gulgee during an event organized by Air France. The year of my birth, 1984, coincided with his memorable participation as an artist at the Formula 1 Detroit Grand Prix, an important milestone in his career given the worldwide status of this race. Accompanied by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra playing Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, he created a painting on the stage of the historic Teatro Degollado.

The following year, 2007, saw him paint a large-format mural at an exceptional event at the chapel of the summer palace of the Kings of Bavaria which featured chamber music. In 2008 he gave his first performance in Korea, at the Seoul Art Center, at an event supported by the French group LVMH and the Korean group Bluebell. Attending the performance were Jean Cyril Spinetta (Air France), Bernard Arnault (LVMH), Daniel Mayran (Bluebell) and 4,000 guests. The 5th International Mariachi and Charrería Festival in Guadalajara in 2008 was inaugurated with a performance by my father to the accompaniment of mariachi music. The event, held in Plaza de la Liberación right across from the famous Teatro Degollado, was attended by 30,000 spectators. In 2009 he returned to Seoul for a performance commemorating the 4th anniversary of the South Korea Cultural Foundation. The performance, sponsored by Bluebell, featured the Korean jazz quintet Prelude. A few months later he performed at the Théâtre Sylvia Montfort in Paris, having been invited by the Chinese Embassy in France to commemorate the 4th Festival of Traditional Chinese Opera. This event was covered by China Central Television (CCTV).
Starting in 2010, with VeriSilicon’s CEO Wayne Dai as patron, my father and I started traveling around Asia on the occasion of his presentations in Shanghai. One of them was at the World Green Energy Forum, held at the Peninsula Shanghai Hotel and sponsored jointly by VeriSilicon and a local association of UC Berkeley graduates. In 2011, he gave one of his most prestigious performances at the Official Residence of Heads of State in Beijing. The painting was sold at auction for approximately one million dollars, which was donated to the international health care organization Project Hope. Also held was an exhibition at which pieces were sold to benefit charities and where Gérard was the only foreign artist present. That same year he held more performances: In Madrid, he took part in an exclusive event for Air France’s La Première customers in the residence of French Ambassador Bruno Delaye; in Lima, to accompaniment of Jean Pierre Magnet’s Serenata of the Andes group, he headlined Air France’s commemoration of the relaunch of its Paris-Lima flights. Back again in Mexico, he gave a performance for Alamys, the Latin American Association of Metros and Subways, at Hospicio Cabañas, a Guadalajara building declared as a World Heritage-Artistic Legacy site.

In 2012 he was invited to give a live performance at the Annual Meeting of Industrialists held at Hospicio Cabañas. The city of Friedrichshafen, Germany welcomed him shortly thereafter on the occasion of the presentation of the EADS-Airbus Innovation and Creativity Awards at the Dornier Aviation Museum. In 2013 he traveled to Chengdu to inaugurate the new VeriSilicon offices at a private event. That year he also appeared at the Shanghai Concert Hall, where he gave an artistic performance before an audience of 2,500 to the accompaniment of music by the young and extraordinary Chinese pianist Siheng Song. In 2014, he performed at Shanghai Culture Square to commemorate 50 years of France-China friendship. This performance, where he was accompanied once again by Siheng Song, produced his largest painting. Measuring twelve meters in length, it was created in the presence of his friend Alain Pompidou – a leading figure in French scientific, political and
cultural circles and the son of former French president Georges Pompidou – and his wife Claude. (The Georges Pompidou National Centre for Art and Culture was named in his honor.) Also in attendance were highly prominent figures in the field of 20th century contemporary art collection and sponsorship. In 2014 he visited Puerto Vallarta and Cancun for celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the Mexican beach resort company Vidanta. In spite of being hospitalized due to illness, in 2015 he delivered his pre-scheduled performance to present the Airbus electric airplane prototype. The plane presented on that occasion with such pageantry is now on display as a piece of art at the Dornier Museum in Germany. From then on he only said yes to performances in Mexico, one of which was for Gracias a la vida, a charity event held in 2016 to support kidney transplants and organized by the non-profit organization Un riñón, una vida, A.C.

“In the celestial emptiness, Economos moves with the serene balance of an adventurer exploring pictorial space. He creates beauty and with it life, extracting brightness in the process. He depicts the hope behind the jade green and sketches the dawn colored in blue nighttime-like skies. And he does it all this with the strange talent of a dream wizard.”
Roger-Gérard Schwartzenberg.
