On your journey down the trail, you will want to make a stop at the restored and redesigned Rock Island Swing Bridge Pier.

The historical double-decker bridge was taken over by the City of Inver Grove Heights and was restored to a 670’ pier using some pieces of the original bridge. Take a break, have a snack and take in the beautiful view from this unique and great City amenity.

The 27-hole Kaposia Park Disc Golf Course now features attractive professional signage at each hole’s tee-box, guiding players through the course and enhancing the disc golf playing experience. This popular disc golf course challenges thousands of players each year, both amateurs and disc golf elites.

Looking to hit the links in Inver Grove Heights? Check out Inver Wood Golf Course’s championship 18-hole, executive 9-hole course or driving range. Inver Wood’s 27 holes sit on 235 acres of rolling, wooded terrain. The championship 18-hole course has features that utilize the area’s natural topography, such as multi-level fairways, variously shaped U.S.G.A. greens and picturesque par three holes that challenge your golf game as well as your senses.

Too cold for outdoor fun? Veterans Memorial Community Center has you covered! Step inside to a zero-depth indoor water park, complete with 2-large waterslides, lily-pad walk and kiddie area. The center also includes lap and dive pools, whirlpool, fitness center, two ice arenas, gymnasium and meeting rooms. Try out the quality fitness classes offered including group cycle, zumba, yoga, pilates and many more. The center is a place for people of all ages to gather and get involved.

south st. paul The Wakota Civic Arena in South St. Paul hosts two ice rinks, the largest of which seats 1,200 people, and is now better than ever having recently gone through a 2.2 million dollar remodel and upgrade.

Central Square Community Center in South St. Paul serves as a Fitness Center and a community gathering place. The Community Center features a state-of-the-art fitness room, instructor-led fitness classes, a large indoor pool and gymnastics center. The Senior Center within the Central

South St. Paul offers Community Gardens for residents to rent each spring/summer. The Gardens are conveniently located near the City’s Compost Site adjacent to the DNR Boat Launch.

South St. Paul’s Mississippi River Regional Trail travels along the shoreline for 5.8 miles. This paved trail was built on top of the river levee, providing relatively flat terrain and excellent scenery and views of river activity and wildlife. Five trail access points, most with off-street parking, makes the trail accessible for all ages and abilities.

Kaposia Landing Off-Leash Dog Park, located off of Concord Street North and Bryant Avenue in South St. Paul, is a hot spot for local dog owners. This park offers owners an opportunity to purchase an annual permit and let their dogs run off-leash on 6.3 acres of open space.

– Progress Plus Economic Development Foundation It takes a team approach, combining a variety of viewpoints, an array of approaches and a spectrum of strengths, to keep cities thriving.

That’s where Progress Plus comes into play for Inver Grove Heights and South St. Paul. Whether marketing the area to a several-million-dollar industrial business or helping a startup gain a foothold along a retail thoroughfare, the organization is key to bringing commerce home.

Why is it so important to have this public-private partnership?

Because working together, the individual players have come up with a winning strategy.

The River Heights Chamber of Commerce is a tireless campaigner for business interests in the two cities, holding focus groups to identify challenges and brainstorm solutions, forging alliances with other groups and tapping the talents and resources of its members to improve the business community for everyone. Chamber chairman Kelton Glewwe explains that the Chamber unites member business’ voices on issues that affect them.

Whether it’s helping fill in retail areas or adding industries, the influx of investment, jobs, new consumers and new residents that economic development fosters benefits all aspects of life in the area.

But the Chamber can’t establish sound redevelopment on its own. Bringing member cities and the Chamber together, Progress Plus, a public private partnership with the cities and the business community, helps coordinate incoming projects and promotes the area for the broader interests of residents, businesses and local government. “Progress Plus gives more of a unified voice to communicating the benefits of the area,” says Bruce Bairaktaris, Chairman of Progress Plus and Owner of Quality Auto Care in South St. Paul.

Elected officials in Progress Plus’ member cities represent residents’ wishes in planning their communities, and have a huge impact on the types of development allowed by their decisions on land use. Local government affects development from the early locating and planning stages through building or renovating and for many years after a project is established, as infrastructure such as streets, utilities and surrounding development.

Who markets the region to businesses and helps advise developers? That’s another place the partnerships of Progress Plus come into play.

South St. Paul Mayor Beth Baumann says she thinks of Progress Plus as “the smoothers” in helping new or expanding businesses know how to approach the city. “Progress Plus helps make sure they have a full plan on what they want to do, makes sure they can secure financing and helps them anticipate what the city planner will ask as well as the vision the city council has for the area,” Baumann says. With Progress Plus’

assistance, a business can have all its “ducks in a row” before taking a proposal to City Hall.

Link explains. “It’s a cost-effective way to provide economic development services.”

The benefit of having an organization that is partly an outreach of the city but not City Hall itself, Baumann says, is that business owners often feel more comfortable approaching other businesspeople for guidance and advice “That’s the strength of Progress Plus -- it’s not just the partnership of the cities and the Chamber, it goes beyond that. It’s really a partnership of all the businesses that have been successful in our city.”

Whether Progress Plus President Jennifer Gale is meeting with city staff and officials to discuss improved transportation plans and funding, or matching property owners with commercial brokers, the organization fills a key role in the process.

Another service offered by Progress Plus is to offer new, expanding or relocating businesses a focused, individual analysis of marketplace potential, labor availability, local and state incentives, possible partnerships and help with the development process -- at no cost to the incoming business.

Progress Plus partners with The South St. Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority, South St. Paul Future, Inc. and Open to Business to help new or expanding businesses secure low-interest loans. It’s a program Glewwe knows well, as the Foundation helped him to move Roadware, Inc., which formulates industrial concrete repair products, out of a garage and into an industrial-office condo space at Bridgepoint.

“They’ve been a great partner. As a private foundation, they have the flexibility you wouldn’t find in government, and their perspective is ‘business first. ‘ They know the area, they know who to talk to and they can help turn potential into success. “

In Inver Grove Heights, Economic Development Director Tom Link coordinates the development process when a business decides to locate or expand in the city. As his role is mainly to coordinate projects’ adherence to municipal zoning, state and local codes and often neighboring residential input, Progress Plus’ freedom to court businesses and market the city is vital to attracting those projects in the first place.

Link’s and other city development and city planners’ roles are to review proposals, evaluate them in light of a city’s plan for that area, and prepare the documentation needed to present the plans to the city. They can show developers options as far as sites and recommend available financing, but Progress Plus is responsible for the crucial step of getting investors in the door and smoothing their path as they move forward.

life after retirement: easy living active programs & a healthy lifestyle Today’s boomers are retiring in record numbers and many are challenging a number of popular stereotypes about retirement and aging.

For instance, according to the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics, the percentage of active seniors has continuously increased since 1998, and many are seeing the benefits of their activity. A recent report published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that adults who lead an active lifestyle live up to 5.5 years longer than those who don’t.

The desire to be more active as they age is also driving many changes in what boomers demand from retirement communities and the menu of amenities that those communities offer.

If you are an individual with an active life style, our region is for you. The South Metro area offers wonderful golf courses, museums, theatres and community centers with plenty of recreational activities to keep your calendar booked throughout the year.

In 1988, the CDA and Dakota County embarked on a 10 year plan to locally finance and construct affordable housing for seniors. In 1996, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners approved a second 10-year plan and in 2007 approved a third phase to construct an additional 10 buildings by 2016. Today, the CDA is constructing its 24th senior housing development

and the Senior Housing Program houses over 1,300 households.

There are also many great organizations that offer volunteer opportunities for individuals 55 and older, whether you’re with a business group, civic organization or as an individual.

This River Heights area was built by many generations of families that still call Inver Grove Heights and South St. Paul ‘home.’ A lot of families remain in the area because it has a small-town feel and a great sense of pride, which is pretty unusual being so close to a major metropolitan area. You can feel the small town atmosphere throughout all ages of life.

grades 11-12. South St. Paul’s IB program encourages students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals, and engaged community members.

With the District’s IB Diploma Program and a partnership with Inver Hills Community College, South St. Paul students can now earn an associate in arts degree without ever stepping foot onto a college campus or paying for a college class. An agreement between Inver Hills and South St. Paul Public Schools allows students pursuing the District’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Program to earn credits at both institutions simultaneously.

For South St. Paul students, this means they have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, an IB Diploma, and an Associate in Arts degree by the end of their senior year in high school. In the spring of 2015, US News & World Report ranked South St. Paul High School as the #2 best high school in the state of Minnesota.

Simley High School also offers 19 Advanced Placement courses and administered 669 AP exams in 2015. In addition, students can take college courses at Inver Hills Community College through concurrent enrollment earning 4 credits for each course. This fall the Simley EMR/EMT course will be worth a total of 12 credits through Pine Technical College.

Inver Grove Heights Middle School serves students in grades 6-8 and Simley High School is for grades 9-12. The U.S. Department of Education awarded Atheneum the title of Blue Ribbon in 2011. In 2014, the Washington Post ranked Simley High School among America’s best schools in the nation. Simley has received national recognition for eight straight years.

In addition, last fall the new Inver Grove Heights Early Learning Center was added next to Hilltop Elementary School, Simley Stadium was upgraded with a new track and artificial turf to accommodate the students and IGH community. The Early Learning Center is used for Early Childhood (ECFE), Early Childhood Screening, IGH Community Preschool, and house office space for Spartan Kids’ Care and Birth to Three Services. The stadium provides an updated track and a field designed for football, soccer, lacrosse for school and community use.

Our Associate in Applied Science degree is made to order if you wish to launch your career as soon as possible. You can earn an A.A.S. at Inver Hills in an IT or business program, gaining the competence you need to quickly excel in these high-demand fields.

Designed for transfer, our Associate in Fine Arts, or A.F.A., degree allows you to establish yourself in one of three fundamental artistic pursuits: Art, Music and Theatre. Our Art department provides instruction in six important focus areas, including ceramics, photography and painting. Both the Music and Theatre departments deliver opportunities to participate in live performances, the former in ensembles, the latter in college-production plays.

Our 90-acre campus features nine modern buildings set amid beautiful gardens surrounded by wooded hills and wetlands.

The buildings are situated around a central mall in a universitystyle setting. Inver Hills is located in Inver Grove Heights less than 10 miles from St. Paul just off U.S. Route 52.

Our students come from Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

We also have international students from a dozen or more countries. Most of our students reside within 20 miles of the campus, particularly in Dakota and Washington counties as well as St. Paul. About half our course offerings meet during evenings, late afternoons and weekends so that working adults can attend. Typically, well over 50 percent of our students hold jobs and learn part-time.

safe community living To the average citizen the initial scene at a fire might seem disorderly and chaotic. Multiple tasks are performed simultaneously in an effort to rapidly knock down a fire and perform life-saving rescue activities as necessary. The synthetic materials used in the furnishing of buildings today burn faster and hotter than the materials used just 20-30 years ago. These more intense fires give the occupants almost no time to escape their burning house and it creates a more dangerous environment for the firefighters as the fire quickly compromises the stability of the modern houses. Another significant hazard of the modern-day fires are all of the toxic gases created when the synthetic materials burn. Along with carbon monoxide, these fires create types of cyanide and other highly toxic and carcinogenic byproducts.

As neighboring communities, the Inver Grove Heights Fire Department and the South Metro Fire Department have developed partnerships on many levels to enhance our working relationship and the ability to safely execute the tasks necessary on a fire scene. The two departments periodically conduct joint trainings to enhance efficiency and cohesiveness on the fire scene. The fire chiefs meet monthly to discuss collaboration efforts. Current discussions include the possibility of a joint Citizens Fire Academy, joint equipment purchases, and grant opportunities that would benefit both departments.

South Metro and Inver Grove fire departments collaborate when responding to calls as well. When a large structure fire occurred in the past, the individual fire department would wait until they arrived on scene and then determine if they needed additional help. If needed, they would then call for “mutual aid�, meaning assistance from neighboring fire departments. Today when a structure fire occurs, the computer aided dispatch (CAD) system automatically requests the neighboring community for help at the same time the

initial fire department is being dispatched. This model puts more firefighters and equipment on the scene much quicker, improving the safety for the residents and the firefighters.

Valerie Erickson has a love for landscapes and nature. Her career as a photographer began with an entry in a photo contest for a nature center, which she won. Her passion for photography evolved over time from a hobby into a profession. One of the reasons her clients value her work is that she has a good eye and compelling vision for how things could look. Valerie has owned and operated her photography business, Valerie Erickson Photography, for five years. She has been taking photos for awards ceremonies, special events, and multiple publications for the River Heights Chamber of Commerce for four years. She has also been a member of the Chamber for nine years. She enjoys getting together with fellow Chamber members at the many events they host each year, especially the Business Card Exchanges. The inspiration she gets from taking photos of landscapes and nature are what make her photographs so beautiful.

In addition to photography, Valerie’s other company, Ultimate Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning, has won several awards from the local Chamber of Commerce and they have been recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
