Since the nationwide lockdown, I have been talking about the necessity of implementing certain changes to keep our businesses afloat. In a few of my previous letters to you, I also talked about the need to change our business tactics in order to get over the dull period caused by the pandemic. During our conversation with Zaix Machinery Co Ltd, we found that they had done exactly the same – changed their tactics according to the situation at hand. Even though they are chiefly exporters, the company management decided to divert their attention to their domestic customers' needs when they saw their foreign sales dwindling due to COVID-19. And the CEO of the company said that they had reaped the fruits of such a decision. The talk we had with him is our cover story for the month.

What are the challenges that you have had to face since the pandemic? How were you carrying out operations during the lockdown in China?

We have had to face some very big challenges since the pandemic broke out. First of all, our operations were hampered by the lockdown in our country. We could not open our factories for several weeks. But I think that is a problem which almost all manufacturers have had to face, and not just in China but all over the world. It was absolutely verboten to come out into the streets even. And the authorities were monitoring the situation very well here. If they had not, I am sure, a lot more lives would have been lost to the pathogen.

Actually, people were themselves scared of the fact that a deadly virus, which had the potential to destroy lives, was amongst them. The fear of contagion made our workers quite nervous when they first came to work after the lockdown. We also found that the hiatus had made them a trifle slow at their job. They were showing signs of - I wouldn’t say lethargy, but, yes, there was some energy missing. It was as if their fears had not altogether allayed.

Furthermore, vessel shipping charges have increased a lot since COVID-19 - around 5 times in comparison to pre-COVID times. Now, we are exporters. Our primary business is done by exporting huge quantities of our products to overseas markets

Most of the company’s customers are located in the Middle East and Southeast Asia; India is a very important market for them

like the Middle East. So, when the charges were hiked, we were at our wit’s end. And importers would generally avoid buying from overseas if the prices go up due to high shipping costs. Of course, we suffered on this count. So, we changed our business tactics. It was decided that we would focus more on our domestic business than our foreign business. It worked. We managed to make up for the deficit in foreign business by giving more attention to the spare parts needs of our domestic customers.

What has been the impact of COVID-19 on your manufacturing and sales?

During the early months of the pandemic, when lockdown was announced in China, most of our foreign clients’ countries were also under lockdown.

Our foreign sales were lukewarm for quite some time even after operations at our factories resumed. There was not much demand from overseas. However, we

didn’t stop manufacturing. Our production levels were back to pre-COVID normal in a few weeks. Our warehouses were well stocked with undercarriage parts. And we realized, as I said, that it was very, very important for us to focus on our domestic business. Therefore, we diversified our products as well in order to meet the diverse demands at home.

Any special measures that you have taken (apart from the usual mandate of sanitizers and masks) to prevent contagion in your offices, factories, and warehouses?

We take each worker’s temperature every single day.

And all workers go through a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT, a type of viral diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2) every week. Moreover, we have ensured that all our workers are fully vaccinated.

So, the chances of contagion are minimal.

ECM Any particular product(s) that you are focusing on at present? Which part of the world do you mainly supply your products to?

Prior to COVID, we manufactured and sold all kinds of undercarriage parts. But at present, we are mainly focusing on producing 1-6 tons mini excavator undercarriages parts. And the demand for such mini excavator parts is increasing with the introduction of several kinds of these machines by leading equipment manufacturers like JCB and Bobcat. Our chief clients are located in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Any new product (apart from undercarriage parts) that you are planning to specialize in?

this self-imposed tag. After some considerable brainstorming, we decided that we would slightly divert our attention to other parts that are in high demand, both at home and abroad.

I believe this was something that the pandemic has taught us. We are manufacturing bucket pins and bushing in bulk, selling them to our domestic customers as well as foreign customers and all our clients are very happy with our products. They have given us positive feedback. We have already introduced our bucket pins and bushings in India and they are selling like hot cakes. That’s quality product and quality service combined together, and we are reaping the fruits of our hard work.

How important is India to your business?

Yes. Although since the inception of our company we have considered ourselves to be specialists in India has always played a very important role in our undercarriage parts, we are now looking to change business. We are very fortunate that the tensions

What are your predictions about the global construction industry in general and the equipment spares market in particular? Do you think it will grow in the coming 2 or 3 years?

WHAT’S NEW?

PM to inaugurate Purvanchal Expressway on 16 November 2021 Will flag off many development projects, including a tap water scheme in Jhansi

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 341 km long Purvanchal Expressway, between Lucknow and Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh on 16 November 2021.

The PM would also lay the foundation of the Noida International Airport, Noida Film City, and the 594 km long Ganga Expressway between Meerut and

Prayagraj. PM wll also inaugurate Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, fertiliser factory and AIIMS in Gorakhpur.

Constructed at an estimate cost of Rs 42,000 crore, the Purvanchal Expressway is touted as a catalyst to boost development in socio-economically impoverished east Uttar Pradesh. The foundation stone of Purvanchal Expressway was laid by the PM in Azamgarh in July 2018.

PM will flag off many development projects, including a tap water scheme in Jhansi. Moreover, the foundation stone of investment projects will be laid in the Jhansi node under the Defence Corridor.

The PM will participate in the bhoomipujan ceremony of the factory being set up by Bharat Dynamics there.

He is also expected to dedicate the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor in Varanasi. The project, started in March 2019, is proposed to be developed at a cost of around Rs 400 crore.

Oil PSUs to set up 22,000 EV charging stations in the next 3-5 years BPCL said it will set up 7,000 stations over the next five years

I

ndian Oil Corporation (IOC) and two other public sector oil firms will install 22,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations over the next 3-5 years to support the nation’s target to reduce its carbon intensity and reach net zero emissions by 2070.

IOC, the country’s largest state-controlled refiner by capacity, will set up EV charging facilities at 10,000 fuel outlets over the next three years, Chairman Shrikant Madhav Vaidya said.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) said it will set up 7,000 stations over the next five years while Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) has plans for 5,000 stations.

At the 2021 Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined a net-zero emissions target by 2070 for India. Also, India is targeting to increase its low-carbon power capacity to 500 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 and meet 50 per cent of its total energy requirements by 2030. It is looking to reduce the carbon intensity of its economy by 45 per cent, cut projected carbon emissions by 1 billion tonne by 2030 and achieve a net-zero target by 2070.

over the same period, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries’ mobility joint venture with BP also launched its first mobility retail outlet in Maharashtra last month, which will offer EV charging and battery swapping. It also finalised an agreement with all-electric ride-hailing service BluSmart to set up EV charging infrastructure in India.

In a statement, BPCL said building a robust electric vehicle charging infrastructure will provide the

While IOC sees fossil fuels like petrol and diesel continuing to play a dominant role in meeting India’s energy needs in the next couple of decades, the company is setting up the infrastructure to give confidence to automobile manufacturers for enhancement of EV production and to customers for an uninterrupted drive, Vaidya said.

IOC plans to set up 50 KW EV charging stations at every 25-km and 100 KW heavy-duty

chargers at every 100-km to weave a network that will provide customers easy access for charging their electric vehicles, he said adding the charging stations would be set up at existing and new petrol pumps across the country.

Another 1000 EV charging stations will be set up by BPCL within the next one year & 7000 overall. It has already set up 52 stations. HPCL which has already installed 382 EV stations so far will set up 1000 stations in the next one year & 5000 overall.

A new Rule 227A has been included in the general financial rule (GFR) to give effect to this

o address liquidity issues facing the construction sector, the government has framed rules that will allow for the release of 75% of the amount to contractors against a bank guarantee in cases where a department has challenged an arbitral award.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had in November 2019 permitted government departments to pay contractors 75% amount awarded to a contractor by dispute settling arbitration panel. This was to be done in cases where the arbitration award has been challenged. ‘’In cases where the ministry/department has challenged an arbitral award and, as a result, the amount of the arbitral award has not been paid, 75% of the arbitral award (which may include interest up to date of the award) shall be paid by the ministry/ department to the contractor/ concessionaire against

a bank guarantee,’’ the Department of Expenditure said in an order dated October 29.

A new Rule 227A has been included in the general financial rule (GFR) to give effect to this. The bank guarantee ‘’shall only be for the said 75% of the arbitral award and not for the interest which may become payable to the ministry/department should the subsequent court order require a refund of the said amount,’’ the order said.

The payment, it said, shall be made into a designated escrow account with the stipulation that the proceeds will be used first for payment of lenders’ dues. Thereafter, it can be used for the completion of the project and then for the completion of other projects of the same ministry/ department as mutually agreed/ decided. ‘’Any balance remaining in the escrow

ECM account subsequent to the settlement of lenders’ dues and the completion of projects of the ministry/ department may be allowed to be used by the contractor/ concessionaire with the prior approval of the lead banker and the ministry/ department,’’ it said.

It went on to stating that any retention money and other amounts withheld may also be released against a bank guarantee. The CCEA had decided that government entities will take the decision to initiate proceedings for setting aside of the arbitral award, and any appeal thereto, with the opinion of the Attorney General for India, the Solicitor General for India or the Additional Solicitor-General for India.

Challenge of the award, in most cases, defers the payment of the arbitral award pending the decision in challenge/ appeal, which process then takes years to attain finality. This is seen to cause severe liquidity constraints in the construction sector as the large sums of money raised by contractors/ concessionaires for the execution of projects get blocked — stressing their balance sheets.

The foregoing then causes a ripple effect throughout the financial ecosystem, directly impacting the repayment of debt to lenders, leading to increasing non-performing assets (NPAs) in their balance sheets.

To address the issue, the CCEA had, pursuant to a proposal put forward by the NITI Aayog, approved various short-term and long-term measures including for government entities to pay 75 per cent of the award against a bank guarantee.

Bobcat introduces iPhone control Bobcat compact loaders can now be remote controlled by iPhone or iPad – and an Android version should be available shortly.

B

obcat’s new MaxControl remote control system can be used on any Bobcat loader with selectable joystick controls (SJC) dating as far back as 2004.

MaxControl is a new hardware kit, combined with an iOS application, with touch controls that are designed for smartphones, so that remote control using the system is as intuitive as using a phone app.

The system allows one operator to do two jobs at once, using remote control to operate a second machine from the cab of the first – for example, an operator can sit in an excavator and use a loader remotely for back-filling.

The MaxControl system uses a wi-fi signal to communicate with the operator’s iOS device and operates in a range of up to 100 metres. In remote areas with poor connectivity, the system keeps the operator logged on for 12 hours of operation. Other features include: machine diagnostics and error codes peer-to-peer sharing – multiple end-users can be given access to the machine, enabling a quick change of operators if required track hours of operation retrofittable to all SJC loaders from J to R-Series machines.

“The jobsite of the future is a more connected place and gamification will play a vital role. Changing demographics and consumer preferences are pushing our industry into categories that have been unheard of or have been poorly addressed in the machinery sector,” said Vijayshekhar Nerva, head of innovation and acceleration for Doosan Bobcat EMEA. “At the same time, the need to address environmental impact, safety and elimination of downtime has become paramount.”

He added: “Bobcat has much wider plans for the MaxControl system. We are looking to make MaxControl a simple modular solution, with one hardware box for the groundwork, laying the foundation for other features. Remote operation is the first feature and we are looking into adding more in the future such as object avoidance and semiautonomy.”

One of the first customers to try the system was Eduard Heredia, a manager with Spanish building contractor Obras y Construcciones Corbera. He said: “In just a few hours I had mastered the operation of the loader through my own iPhone – I would definitely highlight the safety aspects. The MaxControl system

Railway plant supplier Total Rail Solutions has installed defibrillators in a selection of its road rail vehicle (RRV) fleet and welfare units.

T

otal Rail Solutions (TRS) decided to install defibrillators because, particularly working on the rail network, operatives are often working some distance from site access points. Should they fall ill with a heart condition that requires resuscitation, the chance of survival is greatly increased if a defibrillator can be quickly mobilised and used.

Total Rail Solutions chief executive Paul Bateman said: “This is an important issue for our people and the people working on the rail and infrastructure projects we work on. My father suffered a heart attack, thankfully a passing off-duty paramedic administered a defibrillator and saved his life. So I truly understand why this is the right thing to do for the business, our people and their families.”

In addition to the 10 new units now put into

the TRS fleet, the company has previously installed defibrillators at its various plant yards.

Heart disease accounts for 25% of all deaths in the UK, a person dies of heart disease every three minutes. Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease and is the most common cause of heart attack, it was the single biggest killer of both men and women worldwide in 2019.

Around 1.4 million people are alive today in the UK having survived a heart attack. The number of defibrillators across the country has grown steadily, with the total number now more than 10,000. If a defibrillator is administered within the first three to five minutes of an arrest, the likelihood of survival is as high as 74%.

Panel calls for action on embodied carbon An industry panel meeting at COP26 has called for action from governments and business to address embodied emissions in building construction.

R

epresentatives of Stora Enso, Google, Lendlease, WEB Limited Group, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Green Building Council gathered to discuss: How can construction contribute to solving the climate crisis?

Agreed upon during the event were calls on government and industry to reduce the sector’s environmental impact, including: for national and sub-national governments around the world to adopt a life-cycle approach to the reduction of emissions from buildings, and ensure that embodied emissions get addressed from the early stages of planning and building design; and for businesses in the building sector to commit to radical collaboration across the value chain in order to develop, promote and adopt sustainable building practices that achieve the reduction of embodied carbon in buildings at scale and without delay.

“A striking 10% of global carbon emissions are said to come from materials and construction processes, often referred to as embodied emissions,” said Stora Enso Wood Products executive vice president Lars Völkel. “Most of these embodied emissions are released before the building is used. Our industry has an inescapable duty to do better for the planet, for all of us, and we call upon the world’s governments to support us in doing so with regulations and building standards fit for the modern world.”

He added: “As an industry we have lowcarbon and circular solutions that contribute to netzero buildings, cities and states today. Solutions that contribute to solving the climate crisis, rather than intensifying it. We are at a tipping point in history, and the decisions we make now will impact human lives and the environment for decades to come.”

The event was hosted by Stora Enso, a provider of mass timber systems based on crosslaminated timber (CLT) and laminated veneer lumber (LVL). The panel included: Cristina Gamboa, CEO, World Green Building Council; Elizabeth Chege, CEO WEB Limited Group and chair of African Regional Network Roland Hunziker, director sustainable cities and built environment at WBCSD; Joe Van Belleghem, senior director real estate, Google; Neil Martin, CEO, Lendlease Europe; Lars Voelkel, CEO, Stora Enso Wood Products.

£730m highways contract up for grabs East Sussex County Council is looking for a company to look after its highways for a maximum term of nearly 14 years.

E

ast Sussex in England has called for expressions of interest in is highways infrastructure services contract, starting in 2023 and running for an initial term of six years 11 months with an option to extend for an additional seven years.

Contract value is put at £730m.

East Sussex highways are currently looked after by a joint venture of contractor Costain and consulting engineer Jacobs, which was awarded a £300m seven-year contract in 2016 (when the design

partners was CH2M Hill, prior to its acquisition by Jacobs).

The contract covers all highway maintenance (including winter maintenance), highway improvements (including capital schemes) and professional services (including design).

The county council is planning on inviting three (or possibly four) organisations to tender for the contract.

Deadline for initial submissions is 13th December 2021. Invitations to tender are expected to go out in mid-January 2022.

Construction employers are being urged to get involved in a review of short duration training standards for plant operators

T

he review is being carried out by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), which wants to make it easier for employers to get grants for plant training simplifying without reducing standards of training and testing.

According to the latest Construction Skills Network (CSN) there are more than 42,000 plant operators in the UK. CSN’s forecasts for 2021-25 reckon that another 850 plant operators a year need to be recruited and trained to keep pace with demand.

Ireland's growth in new orders continues There has been a further sharp rise in construction activity in Ireland as the growth in new orders continues.

T

he Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) ticked up to 56.9 in October from 56.3 in September. Index readings above 50 signal an increase in activity on the previous month and readings below 50 signal a decrease.

The latest figure signalled a marked increase in construction activity, with the rate of expansion accelerating slightly. Activity has now risen in each of the past six months. According to respondents, growth reflected an improving picture for new orders, some of which continued to be linked to the release of pentup demand following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Simon Barry, chief economist Republic of Ireland at Ulster Bank, said: “Irish construction firms continued to experience strong growth in activity in October according to the latest results of the Ulster Bank Construction PMI. Having eased over the summer months following the post-lockdown snap back in activity in Q2, the headline PMI rose slightly last month, signalling a modest re-acceleration in the pace of overall construction activity growth at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Commercial activity was particularly strong in October as the pace of growth picked up markedly, while residential activity registered solid expansion last month, albeit at a reduced pace relative to September.

“Strong demand for construction services was also evident in further sizeable gains in both new orders and employment, with new business and staffing levels both recording a seventh consecutive month of expansion. But the October results highlight that supply-chain disruptions remain a highly problematic

headwind for Irish construction firms. Respondents cited Brexit, Covid-disruption and shortages of delivery drivers and materials as factors which contributed to a record lengthening of delivery times and record growth in input costs. Nonetheless, despite such headwinds, firms remain confident about the 12month ahead outlook. Sentiment ticked up from September and was again above long-run average levels, reflecting expectations that the ongoing release of pent-up demand will continue to support activity growth in the coming year.”

The expansion in overall activity was led by a sharp and accelerated rise in work on commercial projects. Meanwhile, the rate of growth in housing activity continued to soften from May's record.

Although civil engineering activity fell, the reduction was only slight.

The improvements in customer demand fed through to a rise in new orders during October. New business has now increased in each of the past seven months, and the latest expansion remained sharp despite easing from that seen in September to the softest since April.

The prospects for future activity growth also remained bright, according to respondents, with sentiment regarding the 12-month outlook ticking higher and posting above the series average. Some firms predicted the further release of pent-up demand over the coming year.

In response to rising activity requirements, constructors expanded both their staffing levels and input buying at marked rates. The rate of job creation quickened slightly, with some firms reportedly taking

ECM on new apprentices. Although the rate of increase in purchasing activity eased to a six-month low, it remained strong in the context of historical data.

Where companies did try to expand purchasing activity, however, they were faced with severe disruption to supply chains. Suppliers' delivery times lengthened to the greatest extent since the survey began in June 2000, with companies linking delays to

Brexit, disruption caused by the pandemic, global material shortages and a lack of drivers.

Input price inflation also hit a fresh record in October as the aforementioned supply issues fed through to higher costs. Some 78% of respondents indicated that their input prices had increased over the month.

McVey targets England and Wales P McVey Building Systems, a manufacturer of modular and temporary buildings in North Ireland, is already planning further expansion after digesting an acquisition

P

McVey Building Systems, based in Magherafelt, acquired Toomebridge-based Donnelly Cabins in April 2021 and has now completed the integration of the two companies.

The takeover has increased McVey’s fleet of rental buildings to more than 500, with newly acquired buildings on hire with customers including CDE Global and Farrans. It has also increased production capacity with the addition of Donnelly's factory.

Already this year the company has achieved its target turnover before the final quarter and now has its eyes set on further expansion, targeting the England and Wales markets in 2022.

After a number of successful tenders within the last 12 months, P McVey Building Systems has completed a 400 sqm extension to the emergency department at Altnagelvin Hospital, a 330 sqm modular building for classrooms at Bailieborough Community School and an accommodation block for 200 people at the Belfast Transport Hub. Approaching $1B in annual revenue, esports market looks to level up construction Despite catering to a largely virtual audience, the demand for brick-and-mortar esports venues will only grow in the next few years, according to a new report from real estate service firm JLL. Esports, or competitive video gaming, has often been written off across multiple industries, JLL noted, but the large audience and revenue are undeniable.

Increasingly, fans of the various video gaming leagues look at the competition the same way sports fans have favorite teams and they want a place to cheer them on in person.

A desire for a physical audience, a growing need for headquarters and league rule changes requiring that teams play in home cities will likely contribute to more esports focused venues built out in the near future.

2020 was not the best year for esports revenue, as it declined for the first time since data became available a decade ago, JLL reported. The dip was likely temporary, as 2021 is on pace for a record year with total industry revenue over $1 billion for the first time.

The largest driver of revenue for esports is corporate sponsorships — also a large contributor for professional sports leagues. Sponsors — which in the past have included Mountain Dew, Red Bull and video game companies themselves — support teams and venues and host events and competitions. Though ticket and merchandise sales decreased 37% from 2019 to 2020, the return of in-person events could contribute to growth in 2021 and beyond, the report notes. For instance, Full Sail University has hosted events in its midsize converted venue dubbed The Fortress.

New contractors selected to finish, operate Maryland Purple Line project Managers of Maryland’s Purple Line announced Friday that they’ve picked Maryland Transit Solutions (MTS), composed of Dragados USA and OHL USA, to finish and operate the longdelayed light rail system in the Washington, D.C., suburbs.

The chosen design-build contractors are U.S. branches of major Spanish construction firms. They beat out a Tutor-Perini and Lunda joint venture, according to a press release shared with Construction Dive, while a third shortlisted team, Halmar International, opted not to submit a proposal.

Construction is expected to resume next spring on the 16.2-mile, 21-station Purple Line, which will eventually connect Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland and link to Metro, MARC and Amtrak rail lines.

The Purple Line has been under construction since 2017 and was first slated to start carrying passengers by March 2022. The previous contractor — a joint venture composed of Fluor, Lane Construction and Traylor Bros. — quit last year following disputes with the state over who should pay for the nearly $800 million in cost overruns. Maryland eventually agreed to pay a $250 million settlement.

Purple Line Transit Partners (PLTP), which is managing the project under a public-private agreement with state transportation authorities, launched the search for a replacement in January.

International Airport Automated People Mover and three Canadian light rail projects, while OHL has more than a century of infrastructure experience. Their proposal offered the best value, according to the release.

“We’re very excited to bring on MTS so the Purple Line can begin serving the people of Maryland as soon as possible,” said Jane Garvey, chair of the PLTP Board of Directors, in the release. “In their proposal, discussions and oral presentation, MTS showed they possess all the right qualities — thorough knowledge of the project, across-theboard expertise and a demonstrated spirit of partnership — to get the job done efficiently and with excellence.”

Next steps in the process include finalizing contracts a s PLTP works to secure financing. The new plan, with updated project costs and timeline for opening, will go before the Maryland Board of Public Works (BPW) for approval in February 2022. With a green light from BPW, full-scale construction can resume.

The state has taken over day-to-day operations of the project and kept some work moving forward in the interim.

“I’m excited to partner with Maryland Transit Solutions to move full speed ahead with construction and delivery of this regionally important project,” said MDOT Secretary Greg Slater in the release. “I want to thank everyone for their continued patience as we work hard to get the Purple Line back on track.

Ditch the Shovels with the Mud Dog 700 Vacuum Excavator

F

or contractors who want to prevent underground utility strikes but don’t need big equipment, Super Products is rolling out its new Mud Dog 700 vacuum excavator.

The company equipped the Mud Dog 700 for working in tight, small spaces without sacrificing payload, with its 7cubic-yard debris body and a 600gallon water tank.

It’s also much safer and faster than using shovels, the company says.

The vacuum excavator can dump at up to a 50-degree angle and into a 48inch container. It has a low overhead height and center of gravity. The dump body also has an electric vibrator to shake material out of the bed and an auto-deploying tailgate.

The boom can extend to 18 feet and rotates 270 degrees. At 8 inches in diameter, it is mounted to the rear of the truck. It can tilt 10 degrees.

The Mud Dog 700 comes standard as a

hydro excavator but can be equipped with an air excavation package. It can be operated by wireless or wired remote control.

The water system pumps up to 11 gallons per minute at 3,000 psi. The vacuum system produces 3,100 cubic feet per minute of suction. A 3,700 cfm vacuum pump is an available option.

Other options includ e a scale system, grounding system , a debris body level sensor, a toolbox and safety cameras that give a 360-degree view around the truck. A variet y of truck chassis configurations are available in either manual or automatic transmission. The Mud Dog 700 displayed at the Utility Expo in September was mounted to a Peterbilt tandem-axle truck.

A 4,000 BTU water heater is also available with heated lines for working in freezing temperatures.

ou can’t get to work with your compact track loader until you effectively haul it to the jobsite. Here are some tips for correct trailering.

Weight Matters: If you haven’t already chosen a trailer, the operating weight of the loader should be your first consideration. Also, make sure your tow vehicle is rated for pulling weights equal to or exceeding the trailer’s rating.

Keep in mind that the trailer’s rating often includes the trailer weight, so you may have to deduct the

weight of the trailer itself to get the actual load capacity. Finally, choose a trailer type. Gooseneck trailers offer high capacities, but flat decks may accommodate more vehicles.

Loading & Unloading: Park on a level surface and lock the parking brake. Slowly maneuver off or onto the trailer, being alert to the point when the loader rocks onto and off the trailer ramps. If available, a spotter can help guide you to make the process easier.

ECM Got Attachments? You should typically place the machine with the center of gravity slightly ahead of the axles. Evenly balance the attachments on either side to distribute the weight.

Before Hitting the Road: Tape or plug the loader’s exhaust outlet if it’s facing the tow vehicle to prevent damage to the exhaust or turbocharger. Stop and check chains and tie devices occasionally to make sure nothing has moved during hauling.

Ease-of-Use Features: Some loaders

have design features to make your job easier. For example, some equipment features built-in tiedowns on the outside of the machine. Some other loaders have tie-downs under the loader, which are useless unless the bucket is detached.

Hauling can be even easier with some of today’s smallest sit-in compact track loaders, which are light enough to be loaded on a trailer and pulled by a ½-ton pickup. Use these tips for effective hauling so you can focus on the job at hand.

providing 101 horsepower and 9,680 pounds of breakout force. The engine meets Tier 4 Final emissions requirements through a selective catalytic reduction system that injects urea into exhaust gas to reduce nitrous-oxide from emissions and eliminates the need for a diesel particulate filter.

Hitachi says the engine also features a quick power switch that increases engine output when required or when driving uphill.

Bucket capacity on the ZW100-6 is 1.4 cubic yards, and the machine has a maximum hinge pin height of 11 feet 6 inches.

A hydrostatic transmission control system makes the machine easier to maneuver. Operators can choose between two work modes based on the task and terrain. The oscillating rear axle provides more stability and traction than loaders with a fixed axle, the company

ECM says. When working in wet or slippery conditions, torque proportioning differentials help avoid tire slippage, preventing wear and fuel waste. The ridecontrol feature minimizes machine pitching for a smoother ride and to reduce bucket material spillage.

Compared to previous models, the ZW100-6 uses 6% less fuel during V-shape loading and 19% less fuel during traveling operations. Fuel waste is further reduced through the standard auto idle shutdown.

The ZW100-6 offers a clear view of the job site with 360-degree visibility from the cab. The repositioned muffler and air intake improves visibility out the back window. The curved engine hood further enhances visibility and safety.

Improved insulation in the cab reduces noise levels, making for a quieter work environment.

An easy-to-open wide engine cover allows for easy access for ground-level maintenance. The engine air filter has been relocated to the rear of the engine compartment. The reinforced front frame features heavy-duty axles, designed in-house for increased durability. An optional belly guard can be added to protect the powertrain and driveshaft.

The ZW100-6 is also equipped with Hitachi’s Global e-Service for 24/7 remote monitoring of machine performance. The company’s ConSite program sends automated monthly service reports on daily working hours and fuel consumption data; statistics on the operating mode ratio, plus a comparison for fuel consumption/efficiency, and emissions. After adding the new ZW100-6, the Hitachi ZW-6 wheel loader lineup now includes 15 models.

Cat Next Gen Medium Wheel Loaders Pack a Technology Punch

C

aterpillar has updated its 8- to 10-ton wheel loader line with a slew of standard technology features aimed at reducing maintenance costs, increasing operator productivity and improving fuel efficiency. Models joining the Next Generation lineup include the 966, 966 XE, 972 and 972XE. “Every industry is seeing a shortage of labor.

Anything that we can do to make these machines easier to operate, bring novice operators in, train them up and make them productive as soon as possible is where we’re focused on helping the industry,” says Bryan Cherry, Caterpillar global product marketing consultant.

The new machines ditch the lettered nomenclature and replace the M-series loaders unveiled in 2013 and upgraded in 2016.

All four models are powered by a Cat C9.3 B engine. The 966 and 972 models use smart technology to move more tons of material per hour, increasing productivity by up to 10 percent.

The 966 XE and 972 XE models use a continuously variable transmission (CVT), resulting in 35 percent better fuel efficiency than the standard transmission M-series. Prolonged service intervals plus efficiencies gained through the CVT powertrain result in even lower maintenance costs of up to 25 percent, further reducing operating costs.

Technology boosts efficiency, productivity No more worrying about under- or overloading trucks leaving the yard. All four models feature standard Cat Payload with Assist. Operators can load to target the first time every time.

“The highest instantaneous fuel burn of a loader cycle is during the dig, not while traveling around,” says Scott Schmidtgall, Caterpillar product application specialist.

Auto Set Tires reduce tire slip and wear by promoting proper loading techniques. “As you go into the pile, it provides lift command to set those front tires to make sure you have traction and that you’re not slipping, making for more efficient operation,” says Cherry.

Pair Auto Set Tires with the new Cat Autodig and the job becomes almost effortless. Autodig will automate the entire dig cycle from entering the pile all the way up through where you want to dump into the truck or whatever height you want to stop at. It’s a feature that benefits novice and experienced operators alike.

“You can put your senior operator in that cab and go through and record in Autodig. Then, put your new person in and he or she can see exactly what that 20-year veteran just did and how they got their bucket full,” says Cherry. “Or if you’re an expert operator and you go get that full bucket in the morning – and don’t want to have to do those controls – you can

just replay that dig all day long.”

Optional Cat technologies help to further increase productivity and operation profitability of the updated series. Tip Off Assist helps operators hit the right tonnage every time. “Push a button and hit dump and that machine is going to tip the material off for you,” says Cherry. “It’s going to tip until it hits 10 tons. It’s going to rack back telling you that it’s done, and now you’ve accurately hit that last pass. It takes all the guesswork, all the anticipation and all the mental awareness from the operator out of the equation.”

Built with safety in mind The most important thing on the jobsite is keeping people safe, and the Next Gen wheel loaders come with several new and enhanced features to increase visibility and awareness.

A high-definition rearview camera comes standard, or contractors can upgrade to the multiview vision system for a 360-degree view around the machine.

ompleting its family of Next Generation compact hydraulic excavators, Caterpillar unveiled the reengineered 304 and 305 CR. Cat says both machines deliver up to a 20 percent increase in performance with up to 10 percent lower owning and operating costs compared with previous models.

“The technology we’ve put in these machines gives us a base for growing and expanding the offering even further,” says Greg Worley, Cat product expert. “We don’t end here. We’ll continue to grow and develop these machines with some of those technologies you see in the larger Caterpillar world.”

Cat now offers 17 compact excavator models ranging from the 1.5- to 10-ton size class. Common features and a consistent control layout across the range make training and operation easier, the manufacturer says.

Before we dig into the differences, let’s take a look at some of the commonalities between the two machines.

Performance Enhancements Both new machines can travel faster, lift more and multifunction better compared to E2 series. This is due to a new engine and hydraulic system improvements.

Meeting Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emissions standards, the Cat C1.7 Turbo engine delivers more power than the previous C2.4 engine. Fuel usage is reduced through standard auto-idle, auto-engine shutdown and efficient load-sensing hydraulics with a variable displacement pump.

High main-relief pressures, paired with flow rates, generate the hydraulic capacity for high digging and lifting forces and more efficient use of a range of attachments. Complete with quickdisconnect lines, the standard auxiliary system provides the choice of one-way, twoway or continuous flow.

Inside the Cab If the cab looks familiar, that’s because it is the same one on other Next Gen models.

“Inside the cab, seat forward – the monitors, the console, the controls, the pattern changer – everything is common through the range of our machines from the 1.5- to the 10-ton,” says Worley. “Operators aren’t readily available like they used to be. Commonality is great as you’re moving from one machine to another.”

The sealed and pressurized cab enclosure is available with heating and/or air conditioning. A canopy option is available in some regions.

The Next Generation LCD monitor features a large display. An advanced option offers an intuitive touchscreen and camera monitoring.

As with other Next Gen models, the 304 and 305 CR feature cruise control and stick steer to help reduce operator fatigue, increase productivity and move around the jobsite more easily. With the push of a button, operators can activate stick steer and switch from conventional lever/foot-pedal steering controls to joystick operation.

ECM compact excavators with the addition of stick steer, Worley says. “You can put the blade in your right hand and use it just like a small dozer or track-type tractor. People can now do better grading and finishing with this angle blade.” The angle blade moves 45 degrees left or right of center.

Service and Maintenance The 304 and 305 CR offer up to 10 percent lower total cost of ownership versus previous models because of lower maintenance and repair costs. These cost savings are achieved through: Extended service intervals Parts commonality across models Flat, easy-to-fix panels Ground-level service access Cost-effective maintenance parts While cab units feature an upward exhaust, major design changes were made to reroute the exhaust on the canopy units. This change was made as more information has become available on Tier 4 Final engines. “On the canopy machines, we bring the exhaust back through the counterweight,” Worley says. “If you’re in landscaping and working around the machine you don’t want that sound and exhaust near the operator, so we’ve taken it down away from them.”

304 now reduced radius – not compact radius Don’t compare the new 304 to the E2 series, Cat says; it’s a completely redesigned model. Cat moved away from the compactradius design to increase stability and balance on the 4-ton machine.

The tracks return to 67 inches wide, 10 inches slimmer than the 304 E2, a size that easily fits in tight spaces and on trailers. Track options include a rubber belt or steel track.

trenching, as well as the ability to carry heavy loads without tipping forward. “It makes it a better machine by making it a reduced radius,” says Worley. “Without changing any hydraulics, your backfill is greatly improved.”

With no extra counterweight, the 304 has a 14-inch overhang. With the optional 496-pound counterweight, the overhang is 18 inches.

The machine maintains 40 mm pins, so operators can use the same attachments and couplers as previous models.

305 CR “a true 5-ton machine” An upgrade to the 305 E2, the 305 CR delivers nearly 9 percent more power with 11,061 pounds of bucket breakout force, 6,362 pounds of standard stick digging force and 5,665 pounds of long stick digging force.

It also offers 5.6 inches deeper dig depths than the 305 E2, giving it more application flexibility.

The 305 CR offers 78-inch tracks for added stability and comes in three options: a rubber belt, steel track or steel track with rubber pads. “The steel track with rubber pads gives you the best of both worlds,” says Worley. “You can jump the curbs and have the strength and durability of a steel track. It also adds a lot of low-down weight to this machine, so you don’t actually need the extra counterweight with this type of configuration because you’ve got some naturally built-in weight.”

So, when should the extra counterweight option be used? Consider adding it if you’re using a heavy attachment configuration, like a tiltrotate system. The TRS6 is compatible with the 305 CR. The machine maintains 45 mm pins for compatibility with previous attachments.
