Hello everyone! Welcome to the March 2019 issue of ECLIPSE Magazine. Overall, I’ve been in a far better head space than I have been in a long time. Even remembering where I was last year, it makes me so incredibly hopeful for the future. Of course, a large part has to do with my girl. She is always so supportive of everything and anything I do. My life is infinitely better because she is in it. Beyond that, these past few months I have created some new friendships that truly have enriched my life. I am grateful for them, as well. Now, this cover story, we feature Modulus with Chucky and Starr Hollak on the cover. Every cover is special to me, and it honestly is an honor and privilege to be entrusted to tell their stories. That is the point of ECLIPSE Magazine to shine the light and tell the stories of the best parts of our grid. This cover though showcases my one and only sponsor. I am truly in awe of the work they do, and the way they support each other and those around them is absolutely refreshing. We also showcase Music Speaks Management. Since I came on the main grid, I have been a huge fan of live music, and they represent some of the best singers on Second Life. We have a total of 10 features this month, and I truly hope you enjoy reading about them. There is one more thing. My third cover story I featured Skippy Beresford. The one thing that has stuck with me throughout all these issues is when he said “Be kind.” In a world where you can be absolutely anything you want to be, be kind… even in circumstances that might typically bring a different response. Happiness eludes many people. Some are plagued by illnesses such as depression that rob them of happiness, but more often people are unhappy because they have not learned what Lucy van Pelt knew decades ago, “Happiness is a warm puppy.” Of course, that truth is metaphorical, not literal. Lucy is telling us that doing what we love (cuddling a puppy) with those we love (puppies) is all we need for happiness. Chucky Hollak, creator and owner of Modulus, is a happy man. Modulus is a successful Second Life® store that sells mostly next-generation alpha hair with a collection of original backdrops in addition. Even that seemingly odd combination is a byproduct of the pursuit of happiness. While he enjoys making hair, he sometimes wants a respite. As he explained, “Making hair after hair can get really repetitive, and I make quite a large volume of hairs. I average about six to eight per month. So every now and again I like to make other things. Which gives me the chance

to learn new techniques. I also create outside of SL for my own portfolio or some freelance work.” With Modulus, Chucky is doing what he loves and his blogger manager is his first and Second Life partner Starr Sideways, so he is doing it with someone he loves. Modulus may not be a warm puppy but it works. Chucky joined Second Life in 2008 after seeing it on a TV show in the U.K. He was intrigued by how the people interviewed described its freedom of expression creatively and socially. It was unlike anything he had seen before. Like many people, he spent his early days in freebie clothing. He went to clubs and made a few friends, some of whom are still friends today. “I often think the best times of SL are when you’re a legit new noob and everything’s new. I think it was a lot easier to be a noob back then too. Cause SL was a different ‘game’ then. It’s a lot different these days. It definitely looks a lot better these days that’s for sure.”

ECLIPSE Presents True Confessions My early favourite thing to do in SL, rightly or wrongly, was to be a bit of a griefer at live music venues. Yes, I know, I was that d*ck. I had a levitation HUD from Abranimations and it would just allow you to move ppl around if you clicked on them, nothing major, but it did amuse me and my best friend immensely to ‘levitate’ the singers around the stage mid performance. We’d also randomly tp into ppls houses from the map to say ‘hello’. My time as a griefer was pretty short lived though as I decided SL had a lot more to offer than purely messing around and being annoying to my fellow residents. SL had bigger plans for me. Chucky did not start out as a creator. In fact, he may be on of the first video bloggers. “In 2011 my friend and I started a video blog, which I believe was the first video blog in the game, we would wear the clothes then pick a random song like Meat Loaf or something and then dance to that and record it and credit everything.” They didn’t take themselves too seriously which may be why they picked up a good following. They had fun and then decided to try their hands at making their own content. He and his friend opened Fruk, a store with men’s skins, hairbases, and facial hair. When mesh came along they started making clothing. They were doing well, but Chucky wanted a break and left SL so Fruk was closed. Page 48 | ECLIPSE March 2019

Chucky returned a few years later in 2014 after the mesh revolution. “I didn’t know what to do with myself tbh, mesh was EVVVVEEERYWHHHERE by that time and SL was looking rad.” He knew he wanted a piece of the action and decided to focus on hair. “I could never find exactly what I wanted, so I decide I’d teach myself to make hair and after a few months of learning how, I opened Modulus”

That could have been the end of the story, but in 2015 Starr was home with the flu and a case of nostalgia. “I logged on and found out that my friend Chucky, from 2009, was still around. else, she makes my monthly schedules, so I know what the hell I’m doing from one day to the next, she handles all the blog admin, she also does all my marketing on social media and she does my ad layouts. She’s also a very good graphic designer so she also makes me custom fonts and logos. She’s an integral part of both my SL and RL. She helps me in so many ways. She’s also an excellent cook! Seriously though, she’s an incredible wife and business partner.” Managing bloggers is something like herding cats but Starr values Modulus’ bloggers highly, perhaps because blogging is not something she does. “I could never be a blogger. I stay in the same outfit for weeks at a time just cos I cannot be bothered with all the HUD action and alpha layer hiding/revealing, feet angle to shoe angle stuff. It took me two weeks to put the outfits for this magazine shoot together- I’m not even joking.” In fact, she likes to run around in a bikini all summer so she
doesn’t even need shoes. Like many stores, they use the Blogotex system to help manage their team. They have just finished a semi-annual recruitment drive. “We just recruited a bunch of new talent so I’m really excited to see what they’ve got! We’ve also decided to rotate the team out every 6 months. This will just help keep the team fresh and allow bloggers new to the game, a chance to blog too. You have to start somewhere right? Sometimes all you need is just one break.” Chucky has definite ideas of the kind of store he wants Modulus to be and they are laid bare in the store’s name. “I wanted the store to be flexible and creatively free so I wanted a name that reflected that. The name Modulus comes from a combination of the Latin word ‘Modus’ which basically means constant and Modular, so those two words kinda made a cool combo of ‘modulus’ in my head.” ECLIPSE March 2019 | Page 51

Modulus differs from most hair stores in catering to men though women who like short hair often patronize men’s stores where the styles are bolder, fresher, and more exciting. Chucky certainly does not mind, “The bulk of my customers are male avs, but I dig seeing girl avs rocking the hairs too! People’s creativity here never ceases to inspire and impress me, SL is a very special place.” His store is known for releasing next-gen hair with alpha mesh. Chucky explains the concept as “a more sophisticated version of mesh hair that yields more realistic results than older traditional meshed hair.” Alpha hair is common in most video games. It took him awhile to figure out how to get alpha hair to work in SL, but after he did, Modulus blossomed as a business. He also benefited from inclusion in some good events, including TMD, that introduced him to the avid shoppers. “This store’s a real labour of love, it’s my pride and joy and I’ve poured my heart and soul into it. I’m very proud of it and what I’ve taught myself and achieved. My only aim as a content creator has always just been for people to really enjoy the items I sell and for me to be the best at what I do. I’ve tried to keep Modulus as a store that everyone can come and get something they like. I don’t ever want to pigeonhole myself or make anyone feel like they don’t belong shopping there. Everyone’s welcome. I like my SL to be a positive space, and I want my customers to feel that vibe too.”

Chucky has a very healthy attitude regarding his work and Second Life. He has a rigid workflow and keeps to strict deadlines. To help him do that, Starr maintains his work calendar so he is aware of all his obligations. He gives himself one or two days to model the hair in Maya™ and texture the hairs, script, and load the HUDS, and make the vendor advertising. Second Life is his full-time work and he treats it like a real job with a real schedule. “I always aim to work smarter, not harder. I also never work evenings or weekends. Those are my times to recharge and do RL stuff.” A frequent complaint from men in SL is that there are few items for them at events. They can go to an event and out of a hundred stores, find four offering men’s hair or clothing. Event planners and designers say that men simply don’t shop enough to support those who cater to men. Chucky does not subscribe to the idea that men are not interested in shopping and fashion. “I can’t speak for other designers on the topic of whether men shop or not. But in my experience, they do shop a lot.. I sell thousands of hairs a week. Male avs do shop in SL. If they like the product, they’ll buy it. I would maybe suggest people revise the products they sell to men, instead of saying men don’t shop. Because it’s simply not true.”

Women, though, may be pleased to learn that he plans to add some women’s hair in the future. He also plans to do more mainstore releases. “I’ve been very lucky and I’m pretty stoked with how things are going creatively for me, and I’m always so happy to see other residents enjoying my hairs. My customers are key to everything and they’re awesome.” On a personal level, Chucky tries to focus on being goodnatured. He likes to be around positive people and keep on a even keel. With the store, he does not have as much time for socializing in SL. After ten years of SLife, he has experienced enough drama to know how to avoid it. “Modulus doesn’t leave me much time for SL socialising tbh. But I do have a core group of good people in my SLife. Some I’ve known for years, others more recently. I’m allergic to drama llamas and SL narcissists and ‘social climbers’. I’ve been in SL for over 10 years, I’ve been around the block several times. I’ve seen it all tbh. So I keep my circle small, I keep myself busy and happy. That’s good enough for me.” Busy and happy, there’s that warm puppy!

Starr is just the right kind of positive person. She describes herself as approachable, funloving and non-judgmental. “If you have a beautiful soul- we will be friends. I’m also a straight shooter if a friend needs a reality check. In saying that though, I’m also their biggest cheerleader.” She loves to laugh and loves cats, cooking, and baking. She loves the beach and would 24/7/365 the beach if she could. Chucky is on the same wavelength. “My fav RL pastime is going to the beach. Starr and I go to the beach most days in the summer, and we are fortunate to live by the ocean so we are real water babies.” He also loves gaming (CSGO, APex, GTA V), reading (Oscar Wilde, George R.R. Martin, David Gemmell, Bret Easton Ellis and David Baldacci) and horror and science fiction movies. As to Starr, “I love weird/twisted documentaries and gory, fucked up movies. Chucky is the same on all points except he’s the one who eats all my cooking and baking. Good team. My RL family means the world to me, and the friends I keep are of the best quality. Quality over quantity for sure. I’m really blessed with the life I have.”

Her real life job allows her to work on social and environmental issues to create social change in the world. She is passionate about advancing social and environmental justice and would like to bring more of that into SL through her photos. She also loves the SL community of Facebook though she noted that more and more people are socializing on Facebook rather than in-world. Both Chucky and Starr’s lives have been dramatically changed by Second Life. For one it brought them together. Their antipodean romance would have never happened without Second Life bringing them together from opposite sides of the world. For Chucky, pursuing that romance led to moving more than 11,000 miles to be with a woman who was next to him everyday in his virtual life. They have also both learned new skills in Maya and PhotoShop that changed their career path. Chucky began working full-time in SL while Starr enrolled in graphic design and moved into creative advertising and has become an art director in the advertising/behavior change industry. Second Life has been good to Starr, in her opinion. “It’s taught me a lot about myself. Things that I don’t think the real world would’ve taught me. Character building 100000%. I’ve been put in various situations in the past which I was forced to learn from, or gain strength from. I really don’t think I’d be the person I am today if it weren’t for those experiences.” Chucky also appreciates what SL has done for him. “SL is far more than just a game. It’s the same as RL in the sense that, you get back what you give. If you run around SL being entitled and obnoxious, you’ll get nothing out of it. But if you apply yourself, or just be a decent nice person, you can get so much from SL. It’s an incredibly unique space and I consider myself very lucky to call it home.” Chucky wanted to be sure that everyone knows how much he appreciates his customers, saying he wants to give a “final massive thank you to everyone who has ever visited Modulus and supported it by making a purchase. You da real MVPs.” As you can see, they are doing what they love with the ones they love and have found happiness through doing and being, not through possessing or owning. Aristotle said happiness is an activity, not a state. In the modern era, Thoreau compared happiness to a butterfly that flies away when you chase it, but when you are doing something else, “it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.” In other words, “happiness is a warm puppy.” Visit Modulus in-world and on Marketplace. The group member we feature this month is the talented Hara. She shares, “I started blogging in SL on February 2016 and I haven’t stopped ever since. I love doing it because it keeps me being inspired and it helps me a lot with my depression, and using it as my creative outlet, a way to express myself. It’s also a way to meet new people and make friends and share experiences with them.”

What is your ideal of perfect happiness? My perfect happiness is being content with life, and being surrounded with your family, and all your loved ones, loving yourself freely without worrying about what everyone thinks of you. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Prolly, LOL/LMAO at end of almost every sentence to indicate I’m talking lightly. Cause sometimes I feel like if a person talks to me without those, they’d come of as serious for me. So, I’d think the same if it were me. What do you consider your greatest achievement? In SL, finding great friends who I always love hanging out with. My blogging and how I’m constantly learning and growing as a photographer in able to express myself, and having the best brands & events that I can represent. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? A potato probably because I’m basically one living potato. But in all seriousness, a plant that would grow to be the tallest tree to look over the world. How would you like to die? When the world is ending, in the arms of someone I love. (cheesy!) Everyone who enjoys Second Life has their reasons for logging in every day. For some, it’s the ability to explore beautiful lands. Others are drawn to Second Life’s abundant consumer market and enjoy perusing the various shopping events, collecting rare gacha items, or simply dressing their avatar up. Others are here simply because at the root of it all, Second Life allows its residents to customize their experiences--meaning we can literally be whomever (or whatever) we want. Many residents relish this freedom in the form of roleplay. For those of you who have never roleplayed before, it’s exactly what it sounds like. You dress up, and you pretend to be someone else. Some of the most popular roleplay sims in Second Life right now allow residents to immerse themselves in the worlds of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and even John Norman’s Gorean universe. Roleplay aficionados enjoying Second Life have likely explored at least one of these fantastic lands since joining the grid. Howard’s popular Conan series.This sim and the wonderful people at its helm go above and beyond to present a deeply intricate world with something for just about everyone who wants to get in on the action.

URUK has an intricate set of rules and a well-constructed social structure. The sim boasts a currency system in line with its economy, a combat system, and a set of laws and religion aligned with Howard’s Conan universe. While the sim will not be allowing residents to play as canon characters (characters featured in the stories-such as the series namesake, Conan), the sophisticated set-up allows players to immerse themselves in a low-fantasy environment and build their own stories from the ground up. Low-fantasy worlds are fairly similar to the real world. Magical events may impinge on the world, but it is not a world where magic is the rule. The URUK sim even uses Second Life’s Experience system to make your roleplay all the more enjoyable. Interested players who don’t have a lot of knowledge about the Conan universe may compare the setting to John Norman’s Gor—but the creators of the URUK sim and no doubt Mr. Howard himself would disagree with that assessment. While the Conan universe does allow for the play of slaves, the circumstances for these characters align with more of a Roman definition than the harsh conditions often described in Norman’s CounterEarth novels. The website compares URUK more to the popular series Spartacus, which may give you a better idea of how to align the two concepts, if you happen to be unfamiliar with them.

Music is comprised of twelve notes set between an octave and repeated according to Sam Elliott’s character from A Star is Born (2018). When music is paired with the evocative lyrics; overwhelming emotions can wash over someone affecting their mood for better or worst. When someone is grief stricken, music has the uncanny ability to express those emotions and thus, comfort their grief. “When Words Fails…Music Speaks,” is a lovely sentiment. It’s the motto of Music Speaks Management, a live music management company with artists of all genres. Music Speaks Management was founded by Troy Nelson, Elsbeth Squishy Pruitt, and Kaitlyn Pruitt-Yardley. Remarkably, these three have a common connection beyond Second Life™. Elsbeth, Kaitlyn and Troy’s wife have been diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, or DiD.

Through the course of this interview, it dawned on me that Kaitlyn was missing from the conversation. It wasn’t until I asked that I came to find out that Kaitlyn is one of several alters. An alter is another personality that shares the physical body with the host. For about 11 years, Elsbeth and Kaitlyn, along with the whole system of personalities shared one avatar amongst them all. They hid their predicament because it would be difficult to share that kind of thing with almost anyone. That is, until Troy came into their lives and gave them the courage to “come out of the DiD closet.” Through their shared history of DiD, all three were able to create an ever stronger bond with their pathways now intertwined forever. However, this never may have come to pass if not for their love of live music in Second Life. Both Elsbeth and Troy met while working at Whispering Sands Live WSL) an SL live music promotion company owned by Jordan Jarman. During their tenure at WSL, they managed the live singers and did what they could to make their performances go as smoothly as possible. Both Elsbeth and Kaitlyn were considered “Ninja Snappers,” a clever title that basically meant they shot live during the artists’ sets to get promotional photos. ECLIPSE March 2019 | Page 123
The three of them spent around three years working with WSL until last November. Due to real life constraints, WSL was no longer viable. With the demise of WSL, Troy, Elsbeth and Kaitlyn had choices to make. Troy already was getting requests from some of the singers to manage them after WSL closed its doors. Frantic and unsure what to do, both Kaitlyn and Elsbeth gleefully offered their help to create a new home for the talent.

When the dust cleared, around ten of the artists from WSL transitioned over to their new management company. But something was missing. They needed a name for their fledgling company. Troy actually came up with a perfect name inspired by the ability of music to move us. When we are happy, we turn to music. And when we’re sad, we also turn to music.

For the latter months of 2018, these three were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. But it all paid off. The artists felt at peace with the knowledge they will do their best to help them out. They have an already impressive track record with over three hundred shows under their belt since November 2018. MSM is able to book private show and events and still volunteer with a lot of charity events as well. Most recently they worked with the Feed A Smile event in Second Life. They blocked off seven hours of just MSM singers. MSM has also supported other charities like One Billion Rising back in February too.

On the occasion of its second anniversary, the Itakos Project opens its doors to three intriguing artists: Akim Alonzo, Indigo Claire, and Megan Prumier. The Itakos Project is an art gallery owned and curated by one of the three, Akim Alonzo himself. He works with the images captured on his virtual journeys, transmitting a message, a meaning, which is visible to the observer. Page 136 | ECLIPSE March 2019

Akim’s images can be visited by climbing the stairs in front of the entrance to the Itakos Gallery and accessing the Orange Pavilion. The first image in front of you is “The Matrix: Dancing till the End of the World”, one of Alonzo’s favorite works. When you visit the floor that houses his images, it is easy to realize that he finds his inspiration in the different locations of Second Life® and that the shots taken during his travels become a means of communication, a way to share with the public a feeling, an impression or even simply, an emotion. Another of Alonzo’s works that I particularly appreciated is “The Matrix: Spare Parts with a Brush” which, like the

one mentioned above, recalls “Matrix”, that is the holographic grid of fiction mentioned in the film by Andy and Larry Wachowski (now Lana and Lilly, after their transition). All of Alonzo’s exhibition on the first floor is entitled “The Matrix” and is inspired by this theme. The images proposed are characterized by the presence of a web plot that highlights the idea of the Matrix. As I anticipated, Akim’s images are evocative: in each of them, there seems to be a “fleeting element” for the same artist who, on different occasions, is part of the scene. The dark tones and dark colors suggest a chase towards an idea, a longed-for perspective.

To the right of the entrance to the Gallery, the Black Pavilion houses the works of Indigo Claire. The exhibition is called “Glances and Nuances,” a title that is very suitable for the images that the artist proposes. Looking at Claire’s pictures, one immediately notices her remarkable technical ability in manipulating images. They have as their main subject the woman, captured in different moments and details. The artist loves to play with images, inventing interesting superimpositions and style games. The colors are soft, but they define the contours of the shapes and pictures superimposed, giving them a halo of charm and surreality. ersephone Kore [leriadraven resident] has been around SL for over seven years. She has taken up a love of photography and decorating. She loves to help people in SL and looks forward to making new friends and new photos!
Love gives me hope in the world and in the future. Sometimes, love isn’t what we expect it to be. It isn’t gentle hugs and warmth. Sometimes love is tough, it challenges us, breaks us down, and then pulls us back from the ashes. The whole time it does though, it’s showing us that we can still have hope. Love is hope. If we give up on love, then we give up on hope. What’s the one thing we all want in life? To be accepted and loved. We reach out for it, wanting that connection and hoping it’s there. If we can’t have it, if we become so lonely that we give up, then the world starts to fall apart. We isolate ourselves, our dreams die, we stop creating, we stop imagining, and we stop caring. elly Clarrington is a ten-year resident in world, She started out working in various clubs until she shifted direction and became a blogger. Her blog is called Fever Pitch. She is an avid shopper, searching out the best of both fashion and home & garden items. She met my husband in 2009 and they’ve been married in RL since 2012. Without SL, she would not have met him nor all her amazing friends and family throughout the world. Right now, she’s doing what she loves... shopping and photographing. It’s a shopaholic’s dream. In SL world, what gives me hope is the compassion of the majority who are in world. For a while, it was a little hairy and scary because it seemed to be that everyone was for themselves. Somewhere along the lines, there was a change where attitudes changed towards one another. Over the past couple of years, the SL world has changed for the better and I hope that it continues to grow that way. In RL, the hearts and minds of the young is what leads me to believe there is incredible hope for the future. While there is so much hate and discontent in the world currently, the young people of the world have come together to prove that not everyone believes in a world of hate. I think we have a lot to learn from the younger generations (and if I’m honest, that would include my generation as well) and we have still have a lot to prove as well, but we are well on our way to greatness! itty O’toole writes one of the longest running blogs dedicated to Second Life, Kittywitchin.com, and has been interviewed by Jenni Murray of Radio 4’s ‘Womans Hour’ about her experiences in the virtual world. She enjoys virtual fashion and interior decorating, and lives at The Grove with her cats and partner, Jez Watanabe. I think that despite beliefs to the contrary, mankind is inherently good. Perhaps I’m being optimistic in that belief, but we’ve got through thousands of years to this point in history, so we must be doing something right! A simplistic take, so let me elaborate: I think events in recent years, and the emergence of social media as a platform for discussion and debate, has led people to believe that we live in ‘interesting times’, as the old Chinese curse suggests. By that I mean that we seemingly live in a society that thrives on negativity and I think there’s a real tendency to believe everything that’s written or broadcast in the news media, without using critical thinking to evaluate the messages that are being shared. It is far too convenient these days for people to take things on face value, which leads to confusion, bigotry and xenophobia. Yet I firmly believe that there are enough people out there to challenge these messages and that we’ll ultimately see common sense prevail again. The number of people in the world who are disillusioned with the status quo and seeking to change it through peaceful protest and education is growing. People are more socially conscious and environmentally aware, and this is a positive thing. That positivity will spread and blossom and ultimately lead to a better world for all. We need to nurture this by laying supportive foundations and establishing networks where people can come together to act. It could take many years for the results to become apparent, but we should never feel that our contributions to change, no matter how small, won’t help to facilitate the actions that a civilised society needs to make to move forward in the 21st century and beyond. For me, it is the little things that speak volumes. The kindness and the gentleness we share with one another every single day. It is the moment when a stranger smiles at you as you walk by on the street, the friend who offers help and you know they expect nothing in return, the person you notice treating a pet or an animal with the greatest love and tenderness. When you notice these things, it is a reminder that people are capable of great caring and love. Just as importantly, it is when these feelings and actions of compassion well up inside of each one of me. Surely, I cannot be the only one in the world. Many people want to be kind and be treated with kindness. This gives me hope. There are big things too: all the great organizations spreading the message about being better to our planet and each other, bringing to light wrongs that need to be righted, acknowledging and spreading the word of how our time on this Earth can be lived better. These are all reminders that people care and their care is expressed either individually or in collaboration with others who share the same vision for a better world. The compassion that I have seen in the past six months gives me hope for the future. I’m currently in treatment for Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, a form of breast cancer. Throughout my diagnosis and treatment I have had people from my past, as well as people whom I have never met in person (my SL friends), reach out to me, send me cards, check in on me and offer to visit so they could help me. It’s something I never expected. Sometimes we get so caught up in the negativity that is so prevalent in our everyday existence in the U.S. these days, that we forget that there are SO many people filled with love and compassion that really make a difference in other’s lives. Those people give me hope for the future, personally and generally.

essa Casti [JesNic Resident] joined Second Life in 2014. While initially, she may have felt a bit like a fish out of water; she quickly became absorbed in having fun with fashion and interior design. In more recent days, Jessa has had the opportunity to work with some of Second Life’s most talented bloggers and creators. Currently, you will find her decorating, getting a little creative in a blog post with her sister, or working to support the Elm and Moss&Mink home & garden brands. Humans are what give me the most hope for the world and our future. Which, to be honest sounds a little cliché – even to me. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always hold a kind opinion of our species as a collective. I think to an extent we all let life’s needling affect our moods and perspective, rendering us so acutely attuned to the negative that we forget there are inspiring humans all around us. I actually think that’s what I love most about SL, that it has given me the opportunity to meet some seriously beautiful souls from all over the world. I find this happening more and more over the years, where I meet people and immediately after the encounters, I feel that hope strengthen. That maybe after everything, humans as a collective will manage to be alright. I would love to see a world where we move from a fear-based society that emphasizes and ostracizes differences, to a more heart-centered way of living where loving unconditionally (and understanding what that means) is simply commonplace. In the end, I think the human ability to evolve emotionally and transcend ourselves (despite current social climates) shows a strength of spirit and expansion that can’t help but feed the fires of hope in my occasionally gloomy heart. A
resident of Second Life for 13 years now, Tiffany has witnessed quite a bit on the grid. While her early years consisted primarily of shopping, dancing and socializing, Tiffany has taken a much more active role in the SL community over the past three years. Her love of music lead her to become a hostess for many of the talented DJ’s and live performers from 2016-18. In 2018, Tiffany decided to explore her creative side to begin showcasing many of the amazing creations in world through her blog, Blended Beauty. Along with showcasing the work of so many SL residents, Tiffany also uses her blog to help raise awareness for the LGBTIQ community. In my life, I have witnessed so many horrific acts, both through the world news and also up close and personal. All of us remember events like September 11th, the London bombings and other tragedies. As an EMS provider, I witnessed depravity at its worst. These acts, both large and small, could lead many to believe the world is falling about, especially if you believe what the media reports and what our politicians tell us. Despite this, I have also seen people at their best. I have seen people fight to save someone they have never met. For all of the horrors that have come as a result of global terrorism, countries have united to say they will not back down to bullies and thugs. People are fighting, more and more, for the rights and respect they and every citizen deserve. One fact I thought about with this question was events now compared to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s. In the 1960’s, large scale protests were constantly occurring to earn the basic rights to vote, marry who they love, use the same facilities as others and other basic rights denied to a group of people. While yes, we are still fighting some of those battles to ensure everyone is granted the same basic rights, I also feel like we are seeing a rise in events which look to marginalize people and deny them their basic rights. Look at the protests in Charlottesville, Va a few years ago. Look at groups such as the Westboro Baptist Church. When those who would oppress others are protesting against the changes in society, wouldn’t you take that as a sign the world is improving? Check out her Flickr and Blog.

This may be a cliché—but many clichés are based in truth. My son and young people give me hope for the future and the world. In my job as a librarian and in many parts of my life as a mother and a community member I meet so many amazing young people who are passionate and caring and intelligent. They believe in the possibility of change, and are willing to work towards it in positive and collaborative ways. I think we have seen a lot of divisive politics in the last few years and actions that make us think that the world is pretty bleak sometimes, but the young people I meet are still full of hope and enthusiasm for life and this world. What we teach our children is key. If they learn to love, to respect themselves and others, to enjoy and appreciate what they have, to love nature and the planet, to be generous, to be kind and caring, they have learned the key things to make them hopeful and grow into wonderful human beings. Tokyo Street This is undoubtedly already a new favorite of mine. Tokyo Street’s landmark will drop you in a subway. The area has plenty of awesome photo potential all on its own.
