A Message from Board Chairperson, C. Lynn Gates, J.D. Welcome back!! We have missed you!! Tonight is a celebration of service for others. I am proud to have my “little” brother, General Robert Brooks Brown, with us to share his unique perspective on selfless service. It has been an honor and privilege to serve with the Angels’ Place Board of Directors. We keep the health and safety of our residents at the center of everything we do. We have made progress on each of our five key strategic initiatives (Sustainability, Growth, Leadership Development, Succession Planning and Staffing) with an emphasis on Staffing. Our initiatives and our mission of “Care for Life” hinge on our ability to attract and retain exceptional staff and caregivers. We have launched several plans to address our staffing challenge and it is clear that it will be more expensive to run Angels’ Place in the future. As significant as the challenges are, the fortitude and dedication of our Angels’ Place community has never been more apparent. To ALL of you who have selflessly served Angels’ Place, I want to personally thank you. You are all truly gifts from God that I applaud each day. Angels’ Place Staff and Caregivers: Your dedication during our staffing shortage has been an inspiration to all of us. You have worked tirelessly to keep our residents safe. You are extraordinary. Thank you for your selfless service. Without you, none of our good intentions or the vision of Angels’ Place become a reality. Board of Directors: Thank you for your service and dedication. Your energy, wisdom and diverse talents ensure that the mission, and future, of Angels’ Place remains vibrant. Our Founders: Five ladies wanted to solve a problem and help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Thank you Rosemary Kelly, Annemarie Lopez, Margaret Maxwell, Loretta Nagle Ryan and Peggy Prentice for showing us that selfless service can make a difference. Angels’ Place Donors and Volunteers: None of this happens without you!!! Thank you for your service! Thank you for staying with us. We know that you have many requests for your donations and time. We take your trust in us seriously. Our Annual Audit identified that 86% of your contributions go directly to the care of our residents. We commit to provide a Christian, loving, and respectful home environment to our residents for life! Your generosity makes this happen. THANK YOU! For me, Angels’ Place is an example of the selfless service of many and a real example of Christ’s work in today’s world. Our residents, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, are special people. We are blessed to have them in our lives. Thank you for your continued support of Angels’ Place! God Bless Angels’ Place!!! Sincerely, C. Lynn Gates

Celebrating 29 Years

A Message from the Executive Director Dear Friends of Angels’ Place, This year we celebrate 29 years of service and we could not be more grateful for the opportunity to provide Christ-centered homes and hope to our friends and families with intellectual and developmental disabilities. To be a part of their lives and to strive to help each person be all that they can be is a tremendous honor and more so, a privilege we do not take lightly. In 1992 when our founders, Annemarie, Rosemary, Margaret, Peggy and Loretta shared a vision and put their hearts, souls and their address books together to create a place … a place called Angels’ Place, the great endeavor was begun. A journey from which hundreds if not thousands of lives have been touched in meaningful ways big and small. Whether we have come to this community as a person in need of service, or a volunteer, or a staff person, or a supporter; we have all experienced the emotional and spirit filled impact of being moved by the unconditional love and transformational goodness of the individuals served by Angels’ Place. During this pandemic, none have been more resilient and understanding of the difficult circumstances we have found ourselves in than those individuals Angels’ Place serves, and their families. Their courage and understanding has been an inspiration and has served to fuel our commitment and perseverance as a workforce to be all that we can be to keep them safe, healthy and happy. Today, we are thankful to report that in spite of the challenges, close calls and work yet to be done, we are doing well and our faith as a community in God’s mercy remains strong. Our residents could not attend the 29th annual dinner so the not so famous but tremendously proud Angels’ Place Choir videotaped a presentation singing the song “Angels Among Us.” Purposely chosen, the words to the chorus are: I believe there are angels among us Sent down to us from somewhere up above They come to you and me in our darkest hours To show us how to live, to teach us how to give To guide us with the light of love There are indeed angels among us. And thank YOU for being an angel within our community. Angels’ Place would not exist without your prayers and support. Your kindness fills our community with hope and permits us to believe that like Noah, the dove will bring us the branch from the olive tree and the rainbow will shine forth from the storm. Brighter days are ahead and together as a community, Angels’ Place will continue to grow and thrive; providing care for life to those precious lives we serve today and will serve tomorrow. In sincere appreciation,

Cheryl Loveday Executive Director Angels’ Place 2

RESIDENT

JOY

Fruit of the Holy Spirit

In some ways, this second year of the COVID-19 pandemic felt crueler than the first. Because individuals with developmental disabilities are often predisposed to respiratory issues, we had to stay hyper-vigilant. And just when the growth in new cases seemed to decline, they spiked back up. When we thought we might be able to loosen some of our pandemicdriven disciplines, we were forced to draw back in. The uncertainty and change was especially taxing. Any yet, amongst a dark backdrop, we see rays of sunshine – joy.

8

AngelsPlace.com

Christians believe that joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), distinguished by the fact that it does not depend on circumstance. It comes from within, ignited and encouraged by God. Its presence is determined by the state of our souls, not the state of our days.

The Joy of Miracle League

You may be familiar with the famous poem “Casey at the Bat.” In 1888, Ernest Thayer wrote this dramatic narrative about a fictional baseball game. The poem speaks to the joy of the game and the hope that exists until the final out is made. In a surprising twist, that poem concludes with “there is no joy in Mudville – mighty Casey has struck out.” This summer, Angels’ Place residents returned to the ballgames of Miracle League. Like in the poem, it was a joy for the men and women to Celebrating 29 Years

play the game they love with the people they love. Unlike Casey, however, none of the participants in these games are physically mighty. And also, unlike Casey, when Robert came to the plate with the bases loaded, he did not strike out. In fact, he hit the ball farther than he ever had. A home run. Southfield was alight with joy.

The Joy of New Caregivers

It seems like everywhere you look today, you see help wanted signs. Angels’ Place has been dealing with the same reality. To remain competitive, the Angels’ Place board approved significant increases in wages

and benefits, but the need for staff continues. And while this economy-wide employee shortage is a challenge, we are blessed with: • Long-time caregivers like Dessie – who literally moved into the Holy Family Home to care for Lennie while he successfully fought multiple myeloma • New-to-the-team caregivers like Latriece – who ran to serve at a Covid-positive home before the ink was completely dry on her employment application • Executives like Cheryl and Shannon – who continue to work caregiver shifts in homes to fulfill the need 9

• Joon – a student from the University of Notre Dame who served this summer as part of Notre Dame’s Service Learning Program • Megan and seven other nursing students – who worked and learned while on a Madonna University clinical rotation at Angels’ Place • Kellie and the other oblates – volunteers who have offered themselves in the service of God by serving our residents When an Angels’ Place Home experienced an outbreak, it was heartbreaking to experience their sickness, isolation, and fear. It was also inspiring to be with the people who stepped up to fill in for their sick teammates and care for the residents. Our caregivers wear t-shirts with the line “Earning My Wings.” Against the force of fierce headwinds – they did earn their wings. They brought calm; they shared joy.

The Joy of New Residents

Recently, Sr. JoAnn Ciampa notified a group of families that their loved one has been chosen by our admissions committee to be a new resident at Angels’ Place. Sr. JoAnn said: “There is no bigger joy than when I tell them – many just cry. It is the hardest when I have to tell others that they have to wait.” The admission process is quite long – and the committee can see the stress in the families’ faces. But everyone has to be sure that the home composition will be a good fit before a commitment is made. In many cases, our new residents have been together many times in different settings before they are ready to move in together. 10

“We could never replace the love of their families,” Cheryl Loveday said, “but we can create a new, happy, comfortable, and safe environment for them.” Ignited and encouraged by God – families received the answer to their prayers.

The Joy of New Program

For nearly thirty years, we have been the answer to the question: “what happens to my daughter (or son) when I’m gone?.” And for nearly one hundred residents, we have made a pledge to provide care for life. But unfortunately, we cannot be the

answer for all who come to us. We have over three hundred individuals on our waiting list. We have a vision for a new, parallel model – a new outreach program. Through the generosity of a $100,000 grant from the A.A. Van Elslander Foundation, Angels’ Place will soon begin to pilot this new initiative. Angels’ Place will work with families and their loved one to: • Define their own roadmaps toward future housing and service needs • Build their own relationships with experts AngelsPlace.com

• Establish their own connections with other families for housemates and peer support • Create their own financial and guardian safety net Diane Wells, executive director of the A.A. Van Elslander Foundation commented: “Angels’ Place has an important place in the hearts of the Van Elslander family. We are proud that two Angels’ Place homes bear our founders’ names. We are now excited to help launch this new outreach program. The organization has unique experience and expertise to help our community in this bigger way.” We are grateful for ongoing generosity of the Van Elslander Foundation and we are blessed that Cheryl Loveday will lead this initiative.

The Joy of Generosity

Like the roar of a downpour on a tin roof, the potential of financial challenge came with the need to cancel events like the annual bridge and gin rummy events. Not dependent on circumstance – people gave anyway. Even when they chose not to attend some events, they still bought tickets and sponsorships. When our expenses increased and other revenues were at risk, individuals and foundations committed to help. Multiple legacy gifts, matching and challenge gifts, gifts from long-time donors and others from people we have not yet met came in. The storm is not yet over. But, your generosity brightens the days of our residents. And as such, you emanate joy. You are a blessed fruit of the Holy Spirit. Thank you.

ames was a resident of the Maxwell Home and loved his housemates that became his brothers and support when his own brother passed away. James loved bowling, traveling, music, dancing and attending Notre Dame football games. He will always be remembered for his loving, caring and easy going personality.

n 1991, Rosemary (Rizzo) Kelly and four other women had a dream of providing homes and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Together, they founded Angels’ Place. Mrs. Kelly died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on March 7, 2021 after her courageous battle against melanoma cancer. Rosemary loved being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She delighted in caring for her family, never letting a day go by without showing how much she loved them. In particular, Rosemary’s care for her son John’s special needs, for 58 years, was unmeasurable. This devotion was the driving force behind the creation of Rose Hill Center, a treatment and rehabilitation center for the seriously mentally ill in Holly, Michigan. In addition to helping found Angels’ Place, Mrs. Kelly and her husband Dan co-founded Rose Hill Center in 1989. She committed the rest of her life to caring and advocating for Rose Hill’s residents and graduates, which now number almost 2,000. Through her selfless, nurturing and generous nature, Rosemary made the world a better place, and inspired others to do the same. During a quiet moment with her daughter, Rosemary said, “Remember me as always loving you.” Now in the Lord’s loving embrace, Rosemary left behind a legacy of love that will keep her alive in all our hearts forever.

Joe is dearly missed by his housemates at the MAVE Home. He will be forever in our hearts.

ary Beatty began her career as a caregiver with Angels’ Place on January 8, 2016 and was a steadfast pillar of support to the men and team at our Mahon home during her career with Angels’ Place. Mary has been described as a “quiet lion” meaning she liked to stay in the background but was a fierce advocate for the men at Mahon. A veteran of the United States Army, Mary served in Operation Desert Storm. Born on December 11, 1961, Mary went home to the Lord on May 30, 2021 at the too early age of 59 years.

DONORS Angels’ Place was created by five moms who wanted to make a difference. That spirit continues through nearly 2,500 donors contributing over $2 million annually; volunteers dedicate over 14,000 hours annually.

Caregivers are critical in our service to residents. They address physical needs and provide emotional comfort and stability. Caregiver retention is an industrywide challenge and a strategic priority for our organization.
