Their opponents, Margaret Enright and Janine

Howell, started the game well and led for the first half of the game. But Sam and Barbara dug deep and played some great shots to race ahead and ultimately win the game with a comfortable margin.

Crystal Cylinders Lennox Head’s Juniper Harper has won the 2019 Billabong Parko’s Grom Stomp in the 12 and under girls division held on the Sunshine Coast. Ann Street reef, Currimundi was the location of choice for the day which held bumpy 0.6-0.9 metre waves. Harper impressed the judges with her strong backhand surfing and was undefeated in the competition.

More success Ocea Curtis, also from Lennox Head, travelled all the way to South Australia to compete and achieved a fourth place in the girls 12 and under division at the Ripcurl Grom Search competition, held at the famous

Chinaman’s surf break on the Yorke Peninsula.

Pros Byron Bay’s Soli Bailey, and Lennox Head’s Stuart Kennedy have both been knocked out of competition in their first-round heats at the Hawaiian Pro. Both heats where held in bumpy conditions at Haleiwa on the North Shore and both didn’t get any of the better waves in their respective heats. Byron Bay’s Owen Wright is not competing in the Triple Crown events as he’s concentrating on Pipeline to consolidate his current number seven ranking while Matt Wilkinson didn’t get a start in these events as his ranking of 106th was too low to make the cutoff.

Photo Kylie Robertson The Byron Bay Beez basketballers were beaten by the Lismore Storm 87–78 in an exciting and entertaining Sunshine Conference grandfinal two weeks ago at the Cavanbah Centre. The Storm won the tip off and got away to an early lead to finish the first quarter up by five points. The second quarter saw the Beez put pressure on the Storm as they hit the lead for the first time in the game, but the Storm found an

extra spark and came back to hang on to their five point lead at half-time. The Storm came out strong after half-time and shot their way to victory and won the game by nine points, 87–78. Beez players Riley Gollan and Michael Rossignola were chosen in the Allstars Five team. The Beez were up against Lismore Storm in the grandfinal for the second year running.

The Lennox Head first XI completed an outright win over Murwillumbah in the Far North Coast two-day LJ Hooker league, which included some notable individual performances with bat and ball. These included B Boyle’s maiden first-grade century as well as a 10-wicket haul for Lennox Head’s most-capped first-grader T Fisher. In the first innings he came away with 7/18 off and backed it in the second innings with 3/26. Playing at Megan Crescent ground in Lennox Head, Murwillumbah won the toss and elected to bat before being dismissed for 43 in 16 overs. Lennox bowler C Maladay supported Fisher, taking 3/15 of seven overs. Lennox declared at 7/228 on the back of Moyle’s tonne and a 50 n.o. to J Blackler. A Peenz was the best of the Murwillumbah bowlers with the figures of 2/35 from three overs.

Teenage defender Alby Kay (white) scored his first goal of the season last week against Ballina. Photo supplied Christian Layland Byron Bay FC have kept their undefeated start to the Summer Youth League season with a 4-1 win over Ballina. A brace from 16-year-old Zahi Addis and strikes from Tai Rai Naughton and Alby Kay saw off the challenge from a resurgent Ballina. Fresh off a win, the Ballina Seahorses were confident going into the match against a very young Byron Bay side who were missing some regulars. The Rams scored the opener early in the match when Naughton spied the Ballina keeper off his line and hit a first time finish from outside the box to take the lead. With the positive start, the Rams maintained dominance, and soon had a second when Addis also struck from outside the box. The goals didn’t stop there for the home team as centre back, Kay, got his first goal of the season. Receiving the ball, the young defender drove into midfield, played a

pass around a defender and finished with a good strike from wide. Addis scored his second for the match – and sixth for the season – just before half-time when he beat two players on the wing before cutting-in and converting from a narrow angle. A 4–0 half-time deficit was reflective of the game and while Ballina did come back in the second half – including a goal from a set piece – it was Byron who remained dominant: hitting the post and forcing multiple saves. The victory means the Rams are two points behind South Lismore at the top of the table, with only three matches to go. Byron take on Richmond Rovers this Friday at Neilson Park. Kick-off is 8pm. Meanwhile, the Wildcats dropped a 2–0 lead to draw 2–2 against Goonellabah in the women’s SYL. The result leaves Byron six points behind the competition leaders with three games to play. They take on Lismore Thistles this Friday at John Ryan Oval. Kick-off is 6:30pm.
