Backlash plants a seed for the March 23 state election with the following quote: ‘We need to stop looking to politicians to make our world better. Politicians don’t make the world a better place. Everything that’s ever made the world a better place has come from inventors, engineers, scientists, teachers, artists, builders, philosophers, healers and people who choose love over hate’ – Don Freeman ■ ■ ■ ■

Community consultation builds trust with government institutions. It’s that simple. Should residents get a say on where a large transport hub is plonked in Byron? The page one story is a reminder that bureaucrats truly run the joint, and politicians are mostly ineffectual. ■ ■ ■ ■

The NSW Greens have called for an end to roadside drug testing until ‘an evidencebased roadside drug testing program is introduced that actually tests for impairment, rather than simply presence of drugs’. Good luck doing that if the Nationals are returned to power on March 23 – they apply the zero-tolerance, drug war police state policy, which has worked, um, oh so well so far. Unsurprising recent data from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research suggests that police are disproportionately targeting the northern rivers. ■ ■ ■ ■
