Byron Bay Surf fest: foaming at the mouth Expect a mouth-watering lineup of food and drink choices at this year’s Byron Bay Surf Festival. The five-day event (February 20–24) will see tasty opportunities served up by Byron’s best vendors, producers, brewers, roasters, fermenters, and growers. Friday 22 February bring the family, the picnic rug and cushions for Go Pro’s Sunset Cinema and Twilight Surf Art Markets at Dening Park. Leave the picnic basket at home; from authentic pizza, cold pressed juice to aromatic samosas, BBSF has you covered with food and drink vendors to tantalise your every taste. Peruse the markets before kicking back with nutritious delights for a special welcome to country, Roxy’s Byron premiere of Lisa Andersen’s film Trouble and live tunes. For the non-surfers, start early the next morning Saturday 23 February with yoga (8am), a coffee and Farmer Jo’s Muesli by the foreshore at the Surf Art Markets (9am–5pm). An annual favourite, the markets showcase top shapers, artists, designers, creatives, not-for-profit organisations, food, and drink. There’ll also be workshops, live tunes, and not-to-be-missed enviro panels. Stay nourished throughout the day by enjoying a cool creation from The Bucha of Byron, a locally sourced dish from the Three Blue Ducks food stall or a scrumptious treat from the 30 other food and drink vendors who will be attending. The flavour doesn’t stop there. Byron’s local brewer Stone & Wood will be serving their satiating and delicious cold brews at events throughout the festival. Enjoy a Pacific Ale or Green

Coast Lager and live tunes at The Beach Hotel, who will be hosting epic bands, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. Prepare your tastebuds for the most delicious Byron Bay Surf Festival yet. Vegan cafe What do you think of the new vegan Rainbow Kitchen? Nina (customer): ‘I think it has a very relaxed vibe, it’s all colourful and I like it. The mural is majestic and beautiful, it’s calming and relaxing to look at.’

It’s been busy, it’s been fun and transformative as we’ve all been growing together to make the kitchen work and send out beautiful food. I’ve been diving deeply into something I love and watching how everybody works together. ‘It took a bit longer to open than we thought, by a couple of months, but I’m glad that happened as it gave us longer to work on our menu, and menu testing, finding more local suppliers and getting the team cohesive.’ While many cafes in the area seem to stock the same pastries as everywhere else, The Rainbow Kitchen has its own vegan baker. ‘We’re very lucky to have Izzy, who has shifted here with her family and bakes all our pastries… she starts at 3am,’ says Angel.

‘We’ve been getting really positive feedback. A lot of people come in and can’t believe that they can have a vegan croissant, or scrambled ‘eggs’ made from plant-based ingredients. They are loving the vegan burgers and also enjoying the flavours of raw pad Thai for example.’ Q Rainbow Kitchen. 62 Stuart St, Mullumbimby.
