Dealing with grubs I wish to bring to the attention of the public that there is lawn grub in many lawns across the Shire. What is happening is that people go to the store, and buy a product that says with big letters on the label: ‘lawn grub killer’. DANGER: this is extremely toxic for you, your family, and the environment. In particular magpies, butcherbirds, pee-wees and other grub-eating bird species. In Belongil alone over the last week we found over
40 dead magpies, 24 dead butcherbirds, and three dead pee wees. Heartbreaking! Marsupials like echidnas and bandicoots are also dying in big numbers; personally we found seven. Anywhere lawn-grub killer is used near waterways, many fish die. PLEASE spread the word, there are safe non-toxic alternatives available in most hardware stores and landscaping stores near you. They can kill lawn grub without killing hundreds of
other animals. Let’s not forget the safety of your family. Juud Addison Byron Bay
A changing climate Recently I have been listening to TED talks about climate change, how threatening it is to us all, and how we don’t talk about it very much at all, though we should. Our lives are threatened and we are silent. I agree it can be hard to use it as a conversation starter,

but it is a conversation that matters to us all and we must talk about it or our weird politicians will fob us off with statements such as ‘Australia is fulfilling its obligations’, when we should be doing everything possible to lower emissions (goodbye, coal?) You, The Echo, are the conversational hub of the area, so why not dedicate a page [p3?] each week to climate change. New ideas, new science, what our various pollies are doing or not, what illegal land clearing is happening, how the drought is going. Give us a focus and then, maybe, we will all feel a bit more empowered to act as if our lives depended on it, which they do. Andrew Hall Ocean Shores
The essential Centre I was dismayed to hear in town recently that the Mullumbimby and District Neighbourhood Centre had to let go of long-term administrative staff and reduce the hours of another welfare coordinator owing to a lack of funding. Thankfully I have read (Echonetdaily 6/02/2019) that â–ś Continued on next page
