Liberation Larder has been growing fruit, vegetables and herbs at The Farm on Ewingsdale Road since October 2016 to help provide the produce they need to supply the 500plus meals they provide for people in need in our community every week. They are currently looking for some extra hands who would like to get involved volunteering to help grow more food for their kitchen. ‘The Farm has generously made a plot of very productive land available to Liberation Larder,’ said organiser Helen Hamilton.

‘Our crew started modestly with three rows each 57 metres in length. Johno the farm manager gradually increased the plot and now it is nineteen rows. Our crew harvest 20–40 kilos each week from this land.’ The Larder grow a range of seasonal vegetables, fruits and herbs to use in making their meals, growing everything from corn and eggplant to Asian and salad greens, turmeric and watermelon. ‘The land is donated by The Farm,’ continued Helen. ‘However it doesn’t end there.

They also provide water, equipment and expertise at no cost to Liberation Larder. Everyone involved with The Farm has assisted the Larder Crew in some way. Examples include the manager Johno ploughing the field, seeding carrots and harvesting sweet potato at various times. ‘The commercial growers have all helped with advice, sharing resources and donating excess produce. The kitchen has bought produce from the plot. The florists have given loads of cardboard for mulching and the Bread Social have DGYHUWLVHPHQW

They come equipped with solid shoes, large sun hats, water and sunscreen. However, hours are flexible and people work the time that suits them.’ If you would like to come and get your hands dirty, help make food for the most in need and take home a bit of the fresh produce you’ve helped grow then call Helen on 0439 206 109.

Unique Estates was born from a single sale in the Byron Bay hinterland and grew into a prestige property agency with offices across Australia and Asia. But the empire crumbled into the sea last week when it was announced that the company had gone into liquidation. Employees at the company’s Byron Bay office were among those who received an email from founder Nicolette Winjgaarden informing them that ‘bank accounts are frozen and there are no funds’. ‘It is with great sadness that I inform you that Unique Estates is going into liquidation today and you are to stop work straight away,’ Ms Winjgaarden said in the email, which was published on the property news website Property Observer. ‘Wages cannot be paid tomorrow.’ ‘I am so very sorry it has come to this. Please know I did everything I could to prevent it.’ Unique Estates’ website was shut down within hours of the announcement to staff, and its seven offices across Australia and in Hong Kong quickly emptied. Ms Winjgaarden did not return The Echo’s calls and the liquidator, McGrath Nicol, has instructed staff not to talk about the company’s collapse. However, The Echo understands staff are shocked and upset by the announcement, which few saw coming. Property Observer reported that Unique Estates also represented continued on page 4
