Young talent wins out Earth’n’Sea raises $3,000 for Street Cruise program Victoria Cosford
Earth’n’Sea in its smart new Byron Bay premises hosted a highly entertaining evening recently, raising in the process around $3,000 for the Byron Youth Service Street Cruise program. Sandi Ghandi as MC kept spirits high as did the free-flowing pizzas, salads and beverages. Local suppliers donated much of the food and drink, staff volunteered their time,
and over 110 locals turned out to support the event. Even the brand new dishwasher breaking down halfway through the evening could not spoil the fun; 15-year old Juel MinterNaughton calmly took matters into his own hands and proceeded to wash everything nobly by hand. His efforts were not unrewarded – later on he went on to win a handsome voucher to St Elmo’s. Local DJs ensured most people ended up dancing well into the night.

Council’s tourism plan back on exhibition Byron Shire Council’s Draft Tourism Management Plan (TMP) is back on public exhibition until July 27. According to community economic development officer Jos Mitchell, the plan has gone back out on exhibition due to the recently resolved changes adopted by Council in April. ‘Submissions from the last public exhibition were considered and Council resolved to make changes which are included in the current document,’ Ms Mitchell said. ‘The need for a TMP and an accompanying Action Plan was identified as part of Coun-
cil’s commitment to ensure the sustainable development, management and marketing of tourism for Byron Shire over the next ten years.’ In 2007 Council engaged The Australian Regional Tourism Research Centre to research and facilitate the project. The plan will be on exhibition for 60 days and submissions must be received in writing by 4pm on Monday July 27. A copy of the Draft TMP can be downloaded from Council’s website at www.byron.nsw.gov. au/public-exhibition or can be seen at Council’s Mullumbimby offices.

The District Court in Lismore has sentenced former Olympic kayaker and local resident Nathan Baggaley, 32, to at least five years for dealing ecstasy. Baggaley won two silver medals at the Athens Olympics in 2004. Baggaley was sentenced to a maximum of nine years in jail with a non-parole period of five years after pleading guilty in February to manufacturing ecstasy and supplying more
than 1,500 tablets. His brother Dru Baggaley, 27, was sentenced to a maximum of 12 years’ jail for pleading guilty to the manufacture and supply of a large quantity of ecstasy. Dru Baggaley will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of eight years. The brothers were arrested on the NSW north coast in November 2007 in a joint operation between Queensland and NSW police.
Newrybar fireworks The biggest event on the Newrybar calendar would have to be the annual Newrybar School Fireworks. Held at the public school on Saturday June 13 from 4 pm onwards, this fund-raiser is more than just a big bonfire – there are rides and races, prizes and facepaintings, music and a fair, not to mention the stalls serving up
a fantastic array of great food. Hearty home-made curries, kebabs, cakes and an espresso coffee cart ensure there will be something for everybody. With the bonfire keeping souls warm and spirits high, this is a perfect occasion for family entertainment on a winter’s evening, with all proceeds going toward the public school.
Cop charged with assault A police officer has been charged with assaulting police after an incident in Byron Bay on Thursday morning. According to a police report, officers were dealing with an intoxicated person on Jonson Street when it is alleged two men began hindering the officers. One of the males was an off duty 38-year-old attached to a Local Area Command within the Southern Region. It is alleged the off duty senior constable grabbed one of the officers and as a result was pushed away. The off duty officer then allegedly punched the policeman,
from the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command, on the jaw. As a result the off duty officer was later served a Field Court Attendance Notice for the offence of ‘assault police in the execution of duty’. He is expected to appear at Byron Bay Local Court on Friday June 19. In other crime news, Melbourne Storm players Cooper Cronk and Brett Finch have each been fined $5,000 by their club for being caught urinating in a public place in Byron Bay. The incident was brought to the attention of the club by the players themselves, after they were cautioned by police.
