The Sunrise tavern being proposed by global mining magnate Brian Flannery breaches a draft Byron Council policy opposing new pubs within one hundred metres of residential areas. Council’s policy is a response to growing resident concerns in Byron about the ‘escalating noise, violence, associated criminal activity and disturbance of community amenity associated with licensed premise activities’. The proposed pub is directly across the road from the Sunrise residential area, with many households within 100 metres. The site is a small pocket of the giant parcel of land Mr Flannery bought from Becton just over a year ago. Publicity material distributed to residents describes the plan for a new tavern/bistro as ‘similar’ to a proposal for the site previously approved by Council. However, what Council previously approved was a gallery-restaurant, without any licence attached, as opposed to a licensed tavern, drivethrough bottle shop and sports bar. Mayor Jan Barham says she is unable to express a view on the proposal until submissions close and Council
staff complete their report, though she told The Echo the previously approved plan was ‘very different’ from the current one. ‘When Becton put forward the idea of a restaurant-gallery it was about giving something back for the locals, to enhance the cultural nature of the area, rather than providing another drinking hole,’ she said. Asked whether the publicity material was misleading, the town planner working on the proposed tavern stood by the claim it was ‘similar’ to the previous restaurant idea, saying the buildings were identical. Steve Connelly also confirmed there were plans to add a TAB to the tavern, despite his development application stating there would be no gambling services. ‘This is a great opportunity to have a social hub in west Byron’, he told The Echo, where ‘punters clubs or fishing clubs’ could gather. The slick PR material for the ‘Sun Bistro’ is unsigned, but the hotel’s plans name Bayshore Property Holdings Pty Ltd, one of a cluster of companies ultimately owned by Peggy and Brian Flannery, whose estimated wealth is around $600 million. continued on page 2
Mallams closes, staff relocates to Woolies Hans Lovejoy
Mallams have closed their supermarket in Mullumbimby. The Burringbar Street store closed for the last time on Friday, along with the liquor store on Sunday. In a notice on the door, Mallams thanked residents for their patronage and said staff would be back again when Woolworths opens. Manager John Waterhouse told The Echo that all staff have been given jobs and are in training for the planned opening in May or June. The discount shop, owned by Mr Waterhouse, won’t close but will take over the former Mallams site in April. Woolworth’s Simon Berger echoed
Mr Waterhouse’s claim that Mallams staff were in training. ‘Staff who wanted to move to Woolies can do so. They are in training and been given induction to the company. ‘They are also working in our other stores in Byron, Ballina, Lismore and Tweed until the Mullumbimby store opens.’ Also this week the Brunswick Cellars in Brunswick Heads has been rebranded BWS. BWS (Beer Wine Spirits) is a Woolworths company, and was part of the acquistion of Mallams. Woolworths subsidiary companies now hold licences for liquor shops in both Brunswick Heads and Mullumbimby.
